Jan Hamerton Memorial Ride for a Cure Raising Money for Cancer Society After a very long and drawn out winter I think we can all agree that we are looking forward to the turn of this season. As June is quickly approaching, the members of Central Ontario ATV Club like to think back and reflect on the life of Jan Hamerton, an active member of COATV, the OFATV, and lover of the outdoors, by conducting a memorial ATV ride to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society on her behalf. Last year the Jan Hamerton Memorial Ride for a Cure drew 14 participants on a warm and sunny day, raising $420.00 for the Canadian Cancer Society! Last summer COATV presented a cheque for $1000.00 to the local Canadian Cancer Society representative for the money raised from the 2012/2013 rides. Participants enjoyed a fantastic day of riding with some of our finest water holes yet! Again this year on June 8, 2014, Central Ontario ATV Club will be hosting the 4th Annual Jan Hamerton Memorial Ride for a Cure, starting at 9:30am at our Wildman Trail, cost for the ride is a donation to the Cancer Society, OFATV trail permit is required, event passes will be available on site for those who don't have an annual permit, more details available at http://www.coatv.ca/ and our facebook page.

Point of View 10 Ways to Reuse Coffee Grounds Turns out that used coffee grounds have a number of great uses (as well as a few that fall firmly into the ‘weird’ category). Reduce, reuse, restore, recycle!

It’s become the mantra of our times. As an ant deterrent – well that sounds like a great plan. It must be overpowering for the little critters and they seem pretty caffeinated already, so maybe it makes them crazy. I have to say though – as a facial scrub? I like coffee, but not that much…

Another of my favorites from the list would have to be the gardener’s special – making compost or mulch. Coffee grounds are rich in minerals – including phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and copper. Worms love them – and they are reported especially good for blueberry plants. Although some coffee companies are involved in recycling programs for their used coffee grounds, I imagine that a number of coffee shops still just dump their used grounds, so if you are really a serious gardener, you could probably find a coffee house that would let you have them for free.

Two on the original list (wood stain and “hide furniture scratches”) seemed almost like the same tip! So, not wanting to under-deliver, we dug around and came up with another unusual use – as a pin cushion filling! Simply put the (dried!) grounds in a small cloth, tie off with an elastic band and place in a small container. Now, why bother using coffee for this? Apparently the grounds will keep the pins rust-free (can anyone verify this??)

1. Pest Repellant The strong aroma may be endearing to many of us, but is a natural repellant for many insects such as ants, snails and slugs. Having troubles with ants? Trace them to their point of entry and put out some coffee grounds to deter them from returning.

2. Homemade Wood Stain “Most store-bought wood stains contain harsh chemicals and produce terrible fumes, causing hazards for both the environment and the health of those using them. But coffee––while it does have some limitations in terms of coloration––is an incredibly effective, safe, organic, and ecologically responsible alternative.”

3. Naturally Deodorizing Flower Vase By simply taking a mason jar, some ground coffee [to look like soil] and fresh cut flowers from the garden, you can create a beautiful flower vase that not only looks great, but smells great too! The coffee grounds [whether dry or just brewed] will naturally deodorize the room in addition to the beautiful scent that will be given off by the flowers you have selected.

4. Fridge Deodorizer Place old grounds in a mason jar and stick it in your fridge. The coffee will naturally deodorize the space and replace the ever so popular baking soda from it’s duty.

5. DIY Exfoliating Scrub “Why should you exfoliate? It sloughs off the dead skin cells and unclogs your pores. All good things in my book. Not to mention with this scrub I have the added benefit of smelling like coffee afterwards.”

6. Natural Fertilizer Make a homemade garden fertilizer by making a coffee ground “tea”.

Simply add 2 cups of used grounds to a 5 gallon bucket of water and allow to steep overnight. This coffee “tea” can then be poured over garden and potted plants as a liquid fertilizer.

7. Keep Cats Away Spread used coffee grounds around the base of your garden to prevent cats from digging. This not only helps your garden but can help neighborhood cats as well since some plants are dangerous to kitties.

8. Add Shine to Hair “Coffee grounds can add shine to your hair and condition it naturally. Work the grounds into clean, wet hair and massage for a few minutes, then rinse.”

9. Coffee and Cocoa Face Mask The duo decreases puffiness in the face and the eye area while brightening skin. This easy DIY recipe utilizes old coffee grounds in addition to common kitchen items.

10. Hide Furniture Scratches Do you have some dark wood furniture with a small ding or scratch? Try dipping a cotton swab into steeped grounds and dabbing it onto the scratch. It should take the harshness away from the mark. I would encourage you to test this first on a small spot.

Method Debone the hen from the back removing the spine. Cut a small incision in the breast and remove all of the bones within the carcass. Cut off the wing bones and remove the thighbone.

Cut off the ends of the leg bone and slide the bone up for presentation purposes. Season the inside of the hen with the kosher salt and stuff with the rice and dried fruit blend. Reconstruct the hen by lifting the carcass up so the two legs are in the air and the neck skin comes up and around. Secure with the tinfoil strip. Bake at 350375 in a baking dish on top of the bones for about 30-40 minutes or until the hen is fully cooked.

Cornish Game Hens This week we are deboning a Cornish game hen and stuffing it with a wild rice and dried fruit mixture. This was always a favourite at the cooking classes we hosted at Goodies Cafe over the years. A little perplexing at first as it does require a bit of patience and care with the knife, After it is deboned the chicken will be without form so with the help of the stuffing and a thin tinfoil band we can reconstruct the bird to its original shape. When the hen has cooked the tinfoil can be removed and the hen will keep its shape.

Strict is Fair Victoria Long Weekend When the weather is sunny and warm or actually if we don't have cold and rain the Victoria Day Long Weekend can draw a large volume of people to the Town of Wasaga Beach and surrounding area.

The “Strict is Fair” policy of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police was created over a decade ago in the response to some individuals who came to visit the Town of Wasaga Beach who did not respect the community and vandalized it and created an unsafe environment for both the residents and visitors alike.

This policy has over the year's had a positive effect on community safety and has made those who would want to damage our Town think twice about doing it and has encouraged those who respect our town and want to enjoy what our community has to offer do so in safety.

Yes this policy does mean you will see an increase presence of Police Officers both in the Town of Wasaga Beach and area, but that is not a bad thing. Many a time I have heard “Where's the Police when you need them”, well this weekend hopefully not that far away.

As a resident of this Town, if an increase presence of Police Officers means it’s safe for me and my family to go for a walk or run on this weekend and I don't wake up one morning to somebody’s garbage on my front lawn then that's a good thing.

In addition it is hoped that this policy encourages the right people to come and visit our great Town and not those who would disrespect it and leave it after causing damage and possibly a violent crime.

Entertainment in The Beach!

Local Rising Star Hitting New Heights Wasaga Beach has an abundance of talented artists in our community and amongst them is our local rising star, Rebecca Stephens. She is a singer/songwriter and her music is often compared to Shania Twain and Taylor Swift with a spin of country music akin The Civil Wars and The Lumineers. In April, Rebecca released her new EP “There Is Light” produced by Tyler Guida from IdreAM Creative Group in her hometown of Wasaga Beach at Wild Wing where the inspiration to write this record took place.

IdreAM Creative Group is a cloud entertainment enterprise in New York City specializing in artist development and management. The company found one of Rebecca's songs on You Tube and c o n t a c t e d h e r. T h e i r i n t e r e s t i s t o h e l p develop/support her career and get her latest EP “There Is A Light” out there. Rebecca is excited and enjoys being surrounded by talented people.

Rebecca performed at the Third Annual Film Festival and left the audience breathless with her songs. That evening, her first video “There Is A Light” directed by MaryAnn Watts from Watts Photography won the WBSFF Southern Georgian Bay Music Video Platinum Award sponsored by RBC Royal Bank. Rebecca relished the moment of her first video. “It was a unique experience and so much fun getting the video together. I grew up in The Beach and going to The Beach added a sentimental value,” said Rebecca. Making the video in midNovember was a bit of a challenge as she was battling the cool weather on the beach but it didn't stop Rebecca as she kept her mind in a tropical island convincing herself it wasn't as cold, while blankets and hot drinks provided warmth in between shoots.

When asked about the inspiration for “There Is A Light” Rebecca said: “I was going through a difficult time in my life and my goal was not to write negative songs and I wanted a positive spin on each track.

Currently there's a contest running once a week with IdreAm Creative Group you just need to share her Facebook Page at rebeccastephensmusic and Like her post to receive a FREE download of her recent EP “There Is A Light”.

Rebecca grew up in a family where country music was played in the background although she describes her music as pop country. She has found the perfect balance of both. She started writing poetry at the tender age of 10. Rebecca loved the idea of writing and getting her thoughts on paper. “ I would match the poetry to the songs and develop from there,” she said. That's where she began to perfect her craft with her affection for country music and soulful lyrics.

We need to protect our natural assets The Nottawasaga River system is one of the largest producers of Rainbow Trout and Chinook salmon in the Georgian Bay/Lake Huron basin.

The river also supports critical spawning and nursery habitat for Lake Sturgeon which is a threatened species. The Minesing Wetlands located in the heart of the Nottawasaga River watershed supports a number of rare plant and wildlife species and protects Wasaga Beach from flooding. Rare forest communities are present within the watershed. A mosaic of rare pine-oak woodland and tall grass prairie is found in Wasaga Beach Provincial Park. The ultimate quality and health of the river affects fish and fauna and must be monitored to ensure we are managing our environment in a sustainable way.

The Ask Let’s be mindful of the rigour and discipline we need to place in environmental planning and regulations when it comes to land use planning input and administration. Take notice of development, interference with Wetlands and alterations to shorelines. Let’s support the means that facilitates wise development to conserve the environment and protect life and property from flooding and erosion hazards. Let’s understand the need for environmental monitoring and reporting and not regard it as measure for punitive purposes. Let’s regard flood forecasting and protection as a useful means to help protect life and property from natural hazards. And let’s embrace education, outreach and stewardship as an effective means to create awareness and engagement such that we all become involved in giving a little to maintaining our heritage and truly become good ancestors.

Sustainability is a profitable venture and is measured under a triple bottom line metric in terms of economic, social and environmental parameters. On May 8th, the Wasaga Beach Chamber hosted their 18th annual Awards. The Wasaga Beach Chamber President, Lion Susan Irvine, welcomed all who were in attendance. The Athena award is a prestigious honour that recognizes excellence and leadership ability and a positive impact on the community. This award was presented to Lion President Janice Campbell of Janice Campbell Financial Services.

The Community Involvement Award is presented to a local business that has made a noticeable contribution to the quality of life to residents of Wasaga Beach. This includes volunteer and financial support by the company which enrich the citizens of Wasaga Beach. This award was presented to Lion Sandy Smardenka, owner of Boston Pizza.

The Customer Service Excellence is presented in recognition of the local business, the members of the staff for demonstrating quality customer service. This award was presented to Lion Kathy Kapoor, owner of Cheers, Make Your Own Wine.
