Stephanie Gets Buzzed for Breast Cancer

Stephanie Howard Thompson was surrounded by many friends when she had her hair cut off in aid of Breast Cancer on Tuesday. Wasaga Barber Shop Barbers Frank, Sam and Michelle set it all up but many had their hand in giving Stephanie the snip. Stephanie, who is a member of the Wasaga Beach Lions Club and works at Castle Building Centre was inspired by Cancer survivor and friend Sharon Lewis. Through donations and pledges Stephanie’s Project has raised over $3000. Steph not only cut off her hair today to raise money for Cancer Research, she also donated her locks to the Cancer Society to make wigs. Way to go Steph, we are proud of you! Point of View In my opinion, the construction at Playland Parking Lot was inappropriate from the start. As a local business person suggested to me.... "you can put lipstick on a pig.... but that parking lot is still a pig".

NOW, we are told the concrete waves were not done satisfactorily, so they are being replaced by the contractor... "at no additional cost to the municipality".

How were the non-local contractors chosen and what qualifications did they have to perform the work?

Was the decision based on price only?

Where there any references given from other municipalities where they had worked?

Firstly... not only the does the $800,000.00 plus price tag of "phase one" seem huge... but the fact that the work started the week FOLLOWING our historically important Victoria Day Weekend... the TRUE start of the Summer Tourist Season to most of our local businesses. (Town documents refer to July 1st being the start of the Summer Tourist Season... but I disagree) In addition to the price tag, there was a huge "cost" to our tourism business as we showed a very negative representation of a welcoming beach town when our summer visitors arrived at our Main Beach area to find a construction site extending from the Main Street Bridge to 3rd Street. At many times during construction, the entrance to Spruce Street to access Beach Drive appeared to be CLOSED to traffic as visitors drove through the untimely mess. All of this during late May and the entire month of June... as the sun shined on the World's Longest Freshwater Beach.

Cedar plank salmon with Grainy Mustard Salmon is a great fish for the grill as it is easy to prepare, full of flavor and widely available.

Most of the fresh Atlantic salmon we see in the stores these days is farmed, and though it does have twice the calories and fat of wild salmon, the consistent colour and mild flavour make it an attractive choice for most cooks.

When purchasing fresh fish look for a vibrant metalic shine, as the colour tends to fade as the fish gets older. Press the meat with your finger.

If the meat is fresh, the indent of your fingerprint will disappear. Just as important is the smell.

Fresh Salmon has a very clean ocean smell, not fishy. The aroma of very fresh salmon reminds me of watermelons. If your salmon has its head attached check to make sure the eyes are bulging, clear and not cloudy or sunken.

Once you have purchased your fish it’s time to grill it. I like cooking fish on cedar planks. You can pick up the cedar planks at almost any food store where fish is sold. Soak the planks for about 2 hours in salted water. For more flavour you can add cider vinegar or citrus juice to the water.

No additional cost to the municipality?

Although it appears the town has stated "the tourism season has ended"... we again are showing another unwelcoming mess as visitors drive across our Main Street Bridge.

We had many visitors this past weekend, hundreds participating in the Triathlon, under sunny skies. The construction site is an eyesore!

I like to think our Fall and Winter tourism season is just beginning!

In my opinion, there is a cost to having this construction repeated.

Remove the skin from the salmon and any bones.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers to get the stubborn ones.

Rinse the salmon under cold running water and pat dry with a paper towel.

Season with salt and pepper and lay the salmon on the soaked plank, skin side down.

Spread the mustard over the salmon and sprinkle with the brown sugar.

Set the plank on a medium hot grill, covered, for about 20 to 25 minutes or until cooked medium to well. Check on the fish regularly to make sure the fire is not too hot and keep a water bottle next to the grill in the event the plank begins to burn.

BBQ Banana Smores Ingredients: 1 Banana, unpeeled Mini Marshmallows Chocolate Chips Peel one side of the banana and cut a wedge in the fruit. Pour a few mini marshmallows and chocolate chips in the wedge. Replace the peel and wrap the banana in aluminum foil. Place the banana on the barbecue grill for about 5 minutes.

Unwrap and enjoy or kick it up a notch and serve over vanilla ice cream with a bit of rum.

Entertainment in The Beach!

New Chapter For Wasaga’s Rebecca Stephens Rebecca Stephens recently celebrated her 18th birthday and will be releasing a new album on October 1st titled “The Fight” recorded in New York City with producer, Tyler Guida. “Tyler is a great person very talented always has insightful ideas to make the tracks different that's what I like about him. I've enjoyed doing this new record with him because as we got to know each other, he understands where I'm headed as a person and musically he can get a good grasp of how to capture that in the songs,” said Rebecca.

Tyler produced her last album “There is a Light”. The title track garnered a Southern Georgian Bay Music Video Platinum Award sponsored by RBC Royal Bank produced by Mary Ann Watts at our Third Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival.

From a very young age Rebecca has been perfecting her craft with a beautiful blend of her love for country music and soulful lyrics. Her music has been compared to Country Music stars such as Taylor Swift and Shania Twain. She has a unique spin on country comparable to The Civil Wars and The Lumineers, while breaking her away from the pack as a standout artist to look out for.

This album promises to be fun and edgy. Rebecca experimented with different sounds along with working with people of distinctive musical backgrounds. The title of her EP “The Fight” Rebecca said, “It represents fighting for your dreams, your goal having that vision – there's always obstacles when you're trying to get that goal.” This album will include six songs. Rebecca likes writing songs and by far this has been her favourite experience. “I'm working with an artist development team and I'm learning so much.”

Rebecca teamed up with IdreAM, Creative Group, which is a cloud entertainment enterprise. They are an ever-growing cadre of entertainment and multimedia professionals banding together to provide development and support to the many independent artists trying to share their vision to the world. On August 31st, a new music video from her first single “Ol Small Town” was released. This video is very different from what she's done in the past. At the time of the interview, she couldn't reveal too much about the video shoot.

“Basically we just wanted to have fun, we wanted to be carefree”, said Rebecca. “Ol Small Town” reflects escaping reality and having the best time ever. Rebecca has been dreaming of being an artist and singing has always been her passion. She's very proud of this project and enjoys working with a team while watching her craft flourish. “The challenge of going for something different and not being afraid to really express every facet of who I am,” said Rebecca. This album is a new chapter for Rebecca based on her life experiences over the last couple of years and how comfortable she is with herself while expressing her personality traits.

Having talked to a lot of Beachers over the last few months, there appears to be a lot of talk about what Wasaga Beach needs and many opinions have been expressed about why we need to do a whole lot of things to maintain our vitality as a going concern community.

This leads me to believe that it is high time for an annual Wasaga Beach Citizens Satisfaction Survey and get the information right from the source. Many towns and cities conduct these surveys on an annual basis and publish the results for all to see. This research is one of the ways local politicians and administrations can gather data for key decisions, shape policy and improve on the way things are done efficiently and effectively for a town or city.

Citizen Satisfaction Surveys are an important voice for citizens. Every year Beachers would have the opportunity to provide input on The Town’s performance, their satisfaction with civic services and overall quality of life.

The results of these surveys could be shared with Town departments allowing The Town to improve its business and services with Wasaga Beach citizens’ participation and involvement. It could also be used for performance measures in the town’s business and operating plans. We can ask the better questions, get the better answers and improve on how to get better town results.

An annual Citizens Satisfaction Survey could also open the door to setting benchmarks for the levels of services we receive from the town and could ultimately cultivate a service culture mentality for the town and subsequently all local businesses as well. Imagine being recognized as a town for the highest levels of service where ever you go while living, working and playing in the community that also has the world’s longest fresh water beach. This is doable Beachers.

Change your thinking, change our town to be the best it can be!

Approx. Pop. 140,000. City in Simcoe County at the head of Kempenfelt Bay off Lake Simcoe and Highways 11, 26, 27, 90, 93, and 400, 78 km North of Toronto. The first building was Hudson’s Bay Company storehouse in 1812 and the first dwelling was a log house built in 1815 for Sir George Head, who had come to supervise a proposed naval establishment at Penetanguishene, 49 km northwest of Severn Sound off Georgian Bay. The settlement was first called Nine Mile Portage. The portage was cleared during the War of 1812 as a supply route to military establishments at Penetanguishene. It ran from the site of present-day Barrie at the headwaters of Kempenfelt Bay to Willow Creek.

In 1812 the town of Barrie was surveyed by Captain Oliver of the Royal Navy, who bought land and called the place Barry for Captain Robert Barry, commander of the 15th Regiment of York.

When the post office opened in 1832, it was named Barrie after (British) Commodore Robert Barrie, who commanded the warships at Kingston at that time. In 1831, nine black veterans of the War of 1812 accepted land grants along what is now Wilberforce Street, forming the only government-sponsored black settlement in Upper Canada. A community of about 100 settlers flourished briefly, but the poor soil and harsh climate discouraged them and the settlement was gradually abandoned.

Barrie has been home to many prominent people over the years. Hewitt Bernard (1825-1893) was a native of Jamaica who settled in Barrie in 1851 and opened a law practice. He accompanied John A. Macdonald to the Charlottetown conference in 1864 and served as secretary of the Quebec and London Conferences, which laid the groundwork for Confederation. Andrew Frederick Hunter (1863-1940) was an active member of the Canadian Institute and the history and archaeology of Huronia, and his published writings encouraged the study of local history throughout the province.

William Edward Gallie (1882-1959) William Edward Gallie was a distinguished surgeon and teacher. While practising at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto he devised revolutionary techniques in tissue transplant and bone repair that are now practised throughout the world. The City of Barrie is a thriving business centre and holds Canada’s largest flea market, and an annual winter carnival on the frozen waters of Kempenfelt Bay. Barrie’s oldest public building is an octagonal jail completed in 1842 and still in use.

A new location at the corner of Sunnidale and Mosley (across from Macs Milk), an expanding gift-product line and client list plus fine art gallery, has this entrepreneur multi-tasking.

Rotary Club to Unveil New Town Clock On Saturday, September 13th, at 1 p.m. the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach together with the Town will be unveiling a historical monument and focal point for the town of Wasaga Beach.

A vision inspired by a local resident and Rotarian Member past president Ehab Masad, presented a project to the Rotarian Members of having a Town Clock in Wasaga Beach. A committee was formed with other Rotarians, to head this project and include the local residents of Wasaga Beach.

Part of this project was to sell plaques to local residents, whether it is for in Loving Memory of a loved one, a Citizen, or a Business. Reception from the local residents and businesses was very welcoming, enthused with excitement about the creation of the New Town Clock to welcome visitors to Wasaga Beach.

This is a special ceremony, to celebrate a landmark which will last for years to come.

An extra 100-200 calories burned each day can go a long way to prevent weight gain and keep you staying slim, especially if it’s more than you’ve done before. Another benefit of this simple exercise is that it keeps your bones strong and dense as you age, helping to prevent osteoporosis. Although it has many physical benefits, walking can do wonders for mental health as well. Going for a walk can be very relaxing and can easily lighten your mood when you’re feeling stressed or anxious. Even better, walking has shown to improve mental clarity and cognition.

As you can see, adding a brisk, 30-minute walk to your daily routine can do wonders for your health in the long run. But, if you can’t find a stretch of 30 minutes, go smaller and move whenever you can. Stringing three 10-minute bouts together throughout the day can be equally impactful. You simply can’t go wrong with this easy, enjoyable exercise that you can do anywhere at anytime!

Question: While watching a variety of sporting events, I’ve noticed several athletes wearing coloured tape on their ankles, calves and sometimes their shoulders. What exactly is the purpose of wearing the coloured tape?

Answer: The brightly coloured stripes of Physio tape or Kinesio tape have been popping up everywhere from the most elite athletes to the average recreational exercisers.

Unlike other types of strapping tape, where the tape is wrapped tightly around an injured joint or muscle to provide rigid support, Physio tape and its unique elastic properties, is applied directly over and/or around an injured area to provide dynamic support. One benefit of the Physio tape is the increase of blood circulation to the injured area, which helps to circulate more nutrients and energy, allowing a person to sustain an activity longer with less pain and fatigue at the injured site. Physio tape can be worn for up to 5 days, therefore the therapeutic benefits are available to an injured site for 24 hours a day, which accelerates the healing process from an array of injuries and inflammatory conditions.

Question: I really enjoy walking, but does it provide any real health benefits?
