A Thank You Message from Mayor-Elect Brian Smith Hello friends and fellow citizens of Wasaga Beach.

I cannot begin to tell you how humbled and honoured I am to be your new mayor elect. It is with great determination and excitement that I look forward to December 2nd, and getting to work with our new council to make Wasaga Beach an even better place to live, work, and play for all our residents, both full time and part time.

This election was not about any of the candidates; it was and is about our community.

We all owe Cal and David a great debt of gratitude for the many years they have served our community, and I have absolutely no doubt they did what they believed was best for the good people of Wasaga Beach. So I say sincerely, thank you to Cal, David and all past members of council.

I believe the people of Wasaga Beach have said loud and clear they want change, and I am confident that your new council will bring just that. I look forward to working with each and every member of council over the next four years to bring affordable, realistic and sustainable change to our great town.

It is clear to me that you expect your new council to carry out what we have said we will do in our platforms, and you have my word that I fully plan on doing just that.

As I have said before, Rome was not built in a day, if it was, I promise to hire their contractor. We as a council cannot do this alone; we need your help and your support to accomplish the challenges ahead. We all need to pull together as a community to improve the town I believe we all love.

Over the last few days I have received thousands of e-mail, phone, text messages and Facebook messages of good wishes and congratulations. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent me a message. I am truly humbled and thankful.

December 2nd, 2014 is the beginning of a new era for OUR town, I look forward working at the pleasure of the citizens of Wasaga Beach. You have my word, I will give 100% at all times as your mayor.

Rissotto is one of my favorite comfort foods and the Arborio rice that is used to make it is the key to its texture and flavour. Arborio rice is a variety of short-grained rice used primarily in the classical preparation of risotto. Because it undergoes less milling than ordinary longgrained rice, it retains more of its natural starch content. Cooking releases this starch, giving risotto its c r e a m y c o n s i s t e n c y. A pound of arborio rice can absorb up to 6 cups of liquid without becoming mushy.

Broccoli Rissotto 2 tbsp chopped broccoli 2 tbsp onion 2 tbsp finely diced carrots 2 tbsp oil ( canola or olive oil) 1 tsp garlic 1 cup Arborio rice 3-4 cups chicken stock 1/4 cup 35% cream 1/4 cup parmesan cheese Method Sautee the onion carrots and garlic in the oil.

Add the rice and continue cooking for another minute or two making sure that the rice does not brown. Slowly add the stock, about 1/2 cup at a time. Continue to add more stock a little at a time until the rice has absorbed most of the moisture in the pan. Add the broccoli about 7 or 8 minutes in and continue adding the stock until the rice is tender. Total cooking time is about 15 minutes. When the rice is cooked finish the dish stirring in the parmesan cheese and the heavy cream. You may have to adjust the seasoning with a little salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

This makes about 4 main course servings.

You Entered Your Short?

Share the vision of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival with “Bringing the World to Wasaga Beach through a shared passion for film and the power of storytelling”. Deadline to submit your film or video is November 28th, 2014. This is a great opportunity to tell your story to the World.

One again this year, eleven categories of films and videos will be featured at the forthcoming 4th annual film festival culminating on January 24th, 2015 at the RecPlex. They are: International: Action, Drama, Comedy, Sports Cam, Smart Phone, Music Video, Animation (2.5 10 minutes); National: Action, Drama, Comedy, Sports Cam, Smart Phone, Music Video, Animation (2.5 – 10 minutes) and Documentary (2.5 – 30 minutes); Southern Georgian Bay (SGB): Action, Drama, Comedy, Sports Cam, Smart Phone, Music Video, Animation, Youth Film & Video (2.5 – 10 minutes) Video Advertisement (30 seconds to 1 minute) and Documentary (2.5 – 30 minutes).

New to this year's category is the Youth Film & Video open to ages 10 to 17 years old and Animation.

According to Gary Cerantola, Chair of the WBSFF, the young filmmakers bring much excitement to the film festival and this was witnessed last year when 10-yearold, Devin Gillman won the SGB Action Platinum Award sponsored by TD Waterhouse for “Wasaga Beach Zombie Mash”.

There is no entry registration fee. The film festival is doing this deliberately to eliminate any barriers and allow the greatest number possible to showcase talent in our area, nationally and internationally.

Last year the film festival tripled their submissions with 9 international and 25 national. Cerantola would like to see that number double at the 4th Annual Film Festival.

“Given the social media buzz internationally, nationally and regionally, we expect to break new ground in terms of category response and record submission numbers for our fourth season. Our film festival is gaining recognition year over year”. WBSFF is on the list of film festivals across Canada and is building a lot of awareness. “I predict as it starts catching on we will get the overflow from TIFF. TIFF has a short film component and we are looking at inviting those short film producers to our film festival this year,” said Cerantola.

Their goal is to expand the film festival to a 7 to 10 day period on the shoulder season to really help businesses and create a little piece for the economy as well as fun for our residents and visitors.

“Consider us in incubation period right now where we are still trying to gain awareness, build in terms of quality, content and capabilities, once that starts taking care of itself we will have regular group of followers with interest across the country and internationally for that matter as we start to get known in the world and truly realizing our Bringing the World Wasaga Beach Vision,” said Cerantola.

I have learned a hard lesson over the Wasaga Beach Municipal Election Campaign. People judge other people by their actions and judge themselves by their own intentions.

This has brought new meaning to my following of Stephen Covey. In his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Covey talks about congruence. My definition of congruence has to do with being identical in form, in agreement or in harmony with your personal values in your approach to problems and people.

I believe what matters in the end is what we do and not what we intend or think. Having said that, it is important for people to understand why you made that decision in order to want to align with that decision or not.

There is truth in the adage "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." It says, basically, you can have the loftiest of motivations or intentions, but all will be for naught if your behaviour or in particular your actions do not support the intent. You need to walk the talk.

Approx. Pop. 20,000. In District Municipality of Muskoka, on the Muskoka River between Vernon and Fairy Lakes, ust SE of the intersection of Hwys. 11 & 60, 35 km North of Bracebridge. The first documented “visitor” to the area was William Cann, who came to hunt, and the first settler was James F Haines, who built a home at the east end of Hunter’s Bay. The township was surveyed in 1869, and in the same year an army officer, Captain George Hunt, settled at what was then know as Fairy Lake Junction. Hunt was a teetotaler, who divided his land and sold lots with a “no drinking” clause written into the deeds. It is said this is why Huntsville grew on the west side of the Muskoka River where there are difficult hills, rather than on Hunt’s flat lots on the east side. George Hunt was the first postmaster and named the place after himself when the post office opened in 1870. In 1894 fire destroyed the business district and many homes. Huntsville Pioneer Village, a museum and tourist attraction, first opened in 1961. It’s now called Muskoka Pioneer Village and has 14 historic buildings on a 33acre site. In 1873 a Wesleyan Methodist congregation built a square-timbered church about 6 km. south of Huntsville on Madill Church Road. The church, named after John Madill who donated the land, is one of the area’s many tourist attractions.

So the lesson I learned is that I must clearly understand what I stand for and be passionate about adding to this world and act in line with these beliefs on a daily basis. The other thing I learned is that you have to demonstrate to the people you want support from that you did your homework and provided the benefit to cost reasons why you are pursuing that direction. If we are all to subscribe to a shared vision, we need to know what’s in it for everyone and why we need to work towards that vision.

She was the first freestyle skier to win a gold medal in slopestyle at the inaugural event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Howell has also won a bronze medal in women's slopestyle at the Winter X Games XVII in Aspen, Colorado, behind Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen and Kaya Turski.

November 14 is World Diabetes Day, but that is a Friday and our Wasaga Beach Lions Club is busy that evening with their money raising Bingo, so the plan is to hold our Strides Walk on Thursday, November 13th for Lion Members and their families along with their friends.

The walk will begin at 4:30 p.m. from Boston Pizza at Stonebridge Town Centre going north across the Blue Bridge to view Nancy Island then to the Main Beach then back to the finish line at Boston Pizza. Total Distance covered will be 3 km. We expect over one hundred to participate. Proceeds will go to Camp Huronda, a camp for diabetic children operated by The Canadian Diabetes Association

Wasaga Beach Lions Club Vision Screening at St.Noel School Wasaga Beach Lions Club conduct a vision screening at all elementary schools in Wasaga Beach. Vision screening is done to separate those children with and without possible vision problems. Vision screening results may indicate a potential need for further assessment. The Club partners with eye care professionals to carry out joint screening events. A vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor.

by Jessica Brown Question: I lift 5 days per week consistently, but my strength gains have flat-lined. How do I continue to get stronger? I don’t think I can lift any more than I am right now. Help!

Answer: I don’t really have much information to go on here, but let’s see if I can provide some insight. First of all, there’s the distinct possibility that you’re working out too much. Maybe your volume (the combination of sets and reps) is too high—a common problem for those looking to gain strength as quickly as possible. And how long has it been since you’ve taken some time off to allow your body to fully recuperate from the stress of exercise? Some much-needed rest may do the trick, and amazingly, people often come back even stronger. I also wonder if you’re changing up your workouts enough. Many people get into the habit of using machines or free weights, but then never gravitate toward other forms of exercise. Cables, tubing, bands, kettlebells, medicine balls, and even bodyweight exercises can all increase strength, so you should try to vary up your routine regularly. Lastly, you have to remember that strength doesn’t just increase exponentially on a continual basis. There is a threshold that you’ll reach at some point, and you could be there already. If you feel like you need help with your current program, talk to a certified personal trainer.

Question: The fitness magazines always seem to focus on recovering nutritionally after a workout. This makes sense, so what should I be taking-in to optimally recover?

Answer: You’re right—there is a big focus on recovery these days, and for good reason. If you think about it logically, the preparation for your next workout begins right after you finishup your current workout. Within 45 minutes of finishing a session, your cells are primed for nutrients, so replenishing fluids, carbohydrate, and protein (specifically amino acids) is ideal. The water will obviously help you to rehydrate, the carbohydrate will replenish your glycogen (or stored sugar), and the protein will reduce muscle breakdown and start the

We were encouraged with meeting so many who enjoyed our inaugural event last January and all are excited about our bigger and better event this winter! Although there was no official representation from The Town of Wasaga Beach or The Chamber of Commerce, we and our friends from Wasaga RIVERDOCKS Hotel Suites promoted great winter activities in Wasaga Beach and urged all at the show to visit our community!
