Bringing Theatre to the People

Q

uarter Century Theatre (QCT) is a fledging new contemporary theatre company in Collingwood spearheaded by Owner and Artistic Director, Rochelle Reynolds. “QCT is committed to bringing bold exciting new theatre to this area all locally produced and the most exciting about it, it's all site specifics. As it stands only one of our productions will actually be taking place in a theatre every other one of our productions will be in various outdoor and indoor location around Collingwood and surrounding areas,” said Rochelle. “The reason we are doing that is a way of trying to bring people to the theatre and bring the theatre to the people.” Rochelle was born in Collingwood and raised inToronto where she attended the Upper Canada Repertory Company, studying both classical and contemporary text while gaining a firm foundation in voice and movement techniques. She had the pleasure of studying at various locations from Newfoundland to England while devoting her life to learning and creating meaningful theatre where these experiences have shaped her work. Over the years, Rochelle received many accolades such as the 2012 CBC Prize in Theatre for Excellence in Academics and Performance; 2012 Imperial Tobacco Canada Fine Arts Scholarship; 2013 Award for Academic Excellence in Theatre from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Along with running QCT, Rochelle is a Drama and Playwriting Instructor at the Spaulding School of Arts.

Included in her team are supportive partners Graham Ashton and Khaleel Gandhi combining over twenty-five years of artistic and business experience between them. Graham, a professional golf teacher by trade, brings his strong accounting background and highly skilled designer. Khaleel, an avid youth filmmaker and theatre geek, graduated with honours from CCI in 2016 and is heading to Post Secondary studies at McMaster University next year. He is involved in many organizations and currently the Executive Director of the Spaulding School of Production under the Spaulding School of Arts. The main objective of QCT is to create some theatre and live performance art in the area that appeals to the young age demographic between 17 and 30 years old. “Give people things that are produced by people of my age for people of my age group,” said Rochelle. “I have identified within Collingwood and areas there are some fantastic theatre along with great companies however it is tailored for different age demographics.” What I am really aiming for this first season is trying to show people the kind of theatre that I love the most by doing the work that inspires me. I think that will ensure the best success for the company. I think that will show people what's on the line for me and what I really care about and what I am committed to bring to everyone. I think it's really important to show the people of Collingwood and local areas there are other play writes other than Shakespeare and Norm Foster that are just as fantastic and accomplished.” or more information visit qctheatre.ca.

TIPPING POINT Changing Wasaga Beach Lives

GARY CERANTOLA gary@beachBOOSTER.com

A New Breed of Hospitality and Accomodations Services in Wasaga Beach Let me introduce you to a new business team that has embraced our community and see opportunity in Wasaga Beach with fresh new eyes. Meet Robin Kirstein, Organic Farmer Extraordinaire, Jeff Ross, Woodman/Bushcraft Master and Lethrell Douglas, Clever Custom Chef/Organic Specialist. They are part of a new organization called Wishing Well that has come to Wasaga Beach. “Wishing Well” experienced their first serious season of operation this year at their newly acquired 12 cottage property on 22nd street in Wasaga Beach. They have already achieved their toughest goals so far. They now have claim to be fully open and functioning as a resort facility. “Wishing Well” aims to provide a more intimate level of service. They plan to partner with the community to help highlight all Wasaga's attractions, features and resources. They believe in the recreational diversity of our community and aim to provide the best local information to rebuild our Beach Brand and beyond. Their goal for Wishing Well, is to be “the place to stay” while visiting all that our great community can offer.

I love a brisk Wasaga Beach breeze...

...especially when the leaves blow into the neighbour’s yard! Page 6 beach BOOSTER

When Creativity Meets Innovation They are currently working on modernizing their property to make it comfortable, inviting and showcase ready. But here’s the innovative part of their value proposition. They hope to be a community leader in the emerging fields of environmental stewardship, general well-being, and community activities not directly related to municipal infrastructure. They will attract a whole new demographic through hosting seminars in a nature related environment. They will offer catering to groups and seminars to suit any taste. But they are not just stopping there. One of their key goals is to interact with the community, not just tourists. This means, they hope to host community Farmer's Markets and Rummage Sales, as well as promote day use of available tours and planning resources. “Wishing Well” wants the community to embrace them as a hub of well being and related community information. Their 22nd Street property has a welcoming design and can host a great variety of events nearly all year long. Did I say “ALL YEAR LONG”? “Wishing Well” wants to be a central location and aspires to also host group seminars and retreats given Wasaga Beach and area has so much available for the healthy minded individual or family. They recognize the abundance of activities that our visitors can take advantage of such as; River float fishing, canoe and kayak tours; Water activities like swimming, boarding, diving and wind sports; Winter activities including cross country ski trail access and tours. So, here’s an offer to the Wasaga community from this enthusiastic, innovative business team. They have an empty 36 inch sign out front of their 22nd Street 12 Cabin property. It’s a contest and anyone can enter. In the process, here’s an opportunity where you can personally welcome them into our great community. They would like any of our beach Booster readers to submit a design for a “Wishing Well” logo for their sign. The chosen final entry(s) will be rewarded with credit on the art and a complimentary BBQ afternoon at their property where the winner(s) will enjoy honorary food, pop and bonfires. Just email them at ext4168287000@gmail.com. All entries will receive confirmation of receipt by return email. Yes, folks, we are at a Tipping Point in terms of recognizing that Wasaga Beach is the jewel in the South Georgian Bay crown and there are opportunities abound. We just need to think “Creative Economy” and welcome this new breed of entrepreneurs such as “Wishing Well” to share our vision of Wasaga Beach as “the place” to live, learn, work and play. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work, learn and play. Gary is a YB12 Coach and Business Advisor for Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, and lives, learns, works and plays in Wasaga Beach.

These Aren’t My Boots! There is the local story about the teacher at Worsley School who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his boots. He asked for help, and she could see why. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet." She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet. He then announced, "These aren't my boots." She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?" Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, "They're my brother's boots. My mom made me wear 'em." Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry, but she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, "Now, where are your mittens?" He said, "I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots."

Wasaga Beach’s Historic Main Street - 1942

With Remembrance Day approaching, I was please to find some old photos my Dad had organized years ago. The photos are from a visit to WASAGA BEACH on Dominion Day (July 1st) 1942. I'm thinking this was JUST before my Dad went overseas as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW II, as he was 18 years old in these photos. My Dad (H. Grant Bickerstaff) is shown with some buddies and his trusty 1929 Model "A" Ford Roadster that I had heard many stories about. Wasaga Beach's Historic Main Street is shown 74 years ago! Joe Bickerstaff

Another photo(1943) shows my Uncle, Cecil J. Grant in Flight Training (with a Harvard aircraft) at the historic Edenvale Aerodrome, located close to Wasaga Beach.

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions by Jessica Brown Question: I have a very simple question. In your opinion, what’s the one BEST diet? Answer: That’s an interesting question and one that’s harder to answer than you might realize. Put it this way—I think the optimal “diet” is one that accomplishes these three goals: 1. It gets you to your desired weight, assuming you have one; 2. It promotes health and helps to stave off chronic disease; and 3. It is sustainable for the long-term. So if you want me to be specific, the optimal diet would provide plenty of water, 35-40 grams of fiber per day, and include ample amounts of whole grains, proteins, and poly- and monounsaturated fats. It would also include 810 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, a couple servings of fresh fish each week and only a few servings of dairy. Added sugars, sodium, and saturated and trans fats would all be limited, though it’s important that the diet is realistic and doable, so treats are certainly wouldn’t be outlawed. I know you’re looking for one diet to follow, but in all my years working in health and wellness, just about every diet is missing something, or places too much emphasis on this and not enough on that—you get the idea. Your best bet would be to track your food for just a few weeks, and gradually try to incorporate some of the recommendations above. I also recommend reading “The Way to Eat: A Six-Step Path to Lifelong Weight Control” by Dr. David Katz. Question: When I’m motivated, my workouts and diet are rock solid. But that’s my problem—motivation. Any tips to help me stay on track with my goals? Answer: Absolutely! Even those of us in the health and wellness field struggle with motivation from time to time.

We are certainly not immune. That said, there are several things you can do to keep yourself motivated. First of all, set small goals. It’s important to know the big picture, but the journey to get there can be daunting, so break it up into smaller, more achievable chunks. Scheduling your activities helps a lot as well. If you treat exercise like an important meeting or like brushing your teeth, it’s more likely to become a habit. Partnering up is also an excellent idea. It would be difficult to find a better motivator than a friend of family member keeping you accountable to your workouts, your diet, and your newfound lifestyle. And frankly, sometimes you probably need a kick in the youknow-what. Last, but not least, pay for it! This may sound a bit odd, but if you have some skin in the game, the game dramatically changes. Buy a gym membership, join an online health website, purchase a credible book, or throw down some cash for a heart rate monitor. Making an investment in your health will pay dividends in the long run.
