Dr. Mardi Charlton and Mary Sararas of Beach Chiropractic and Wellness Centre took part in Rotary’s Polar Bear Plunge during Snowman Mania Weekend. Between them they raised $547. 60% was split between the 'Y' Strong KIds Campaign and the Canadian Cancer Society, and 40% went to Wasaga Beach Rotary Club. Well done.

WHY NEWFIES CAN'T BE PARAMEDICS Jim and Bud are out in the woods hunting when suddenly Bud grabs his chest and falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing; his eyes are rolled back in his head. Jim whips out his cell phone and calls 911. He gasps to the operator, "Lard t'undering Jaysus!! I tink Bud is dead!! What should I do?" The operator, in a calm soothing voice says, "Just take it easy and follow my instructions. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence...........And then a gun shot is heard. Jim comes back on the line, "Okay, now what?"
I know that anti-bullying day has come and gone but my story is still resting on my heart. I was a victim for too many years. 11 years it took someone to believe my story that the same punk kid was a jerk to me all the time. We went to the same elementary school, lived on the same road and went to the same high school together. We road the same bus together from Kindergarten thru High School. I can't even remember how many times I ratted him out to the principal. Time and time again nothing was done about it. He picked on me, teased me, made fun of my size, said rude comments about my family. I was a good kid. I followed the rules, I was shy and was an average student. I wasn't a confident kid and a late bloomer to boot. I had no idea how to stand up for myself and those times I timidly tried, things got worse. Principal got tired of my complaints. I got tired of coming home after school crying and worried about the next day and what would happen. Grade 11 rolled around and the punk was still a major thorn in my life no matter how much I ignored/avoided him. One afternoon on the bus ride home a rotten sandwich landed on me. I was livid. My memory is vague as to how things transpired but finally someone listened to me. The punk was kicked off the bus for 3 days. My bus driver (at the time) in high school favoured this kid so she stopped liking me after that. It wasn't fair BUT he finally stopped. 11 freaking years it took for someone to hear my story and how much this punk needed to be told to stop. I don't know what happened after he got kicked off the bus. Him and others finally left me alone entirely, I was finally allowed to enjoy taking the bus to school and not being full of anxiety knowing the moment would come that some nasty thing was said to me. I haven't seen this punk since my last year of high school. I don't ever want to see him. How he treated me will always stick with me BUT it doesn't control me. Point of View How Organized Are You ....More Than a 4 Year Old?
Do you think that you are Organized? I would say that most of us can rate ourselves with a percentage such as...I'm 80% organized or would say, "I'm organized at work but not at home". We all think of ourselves as being organized to a certain degree. How Organized Are You? Being organized isn't rocket science. It comes naturally to so many and for others...it is a struggle. The one thing that I think is important to remember is that there is no real right or wrong way to "be organized". Your style of organizing should resonate with your personality. A system that is too complicated is a system that won't work. This is where, I believe, people can get stuck and develop the impression that being organized is overwhelming. Maybe it is that your system to organize is overly complicated for you to be able to keep it organized. Keep systems simple and easy to use. How Organized is a 4 Year old? On Tuesday mornings, we leave the house no later than 6:30 a.m. I have a standing 7:00 a.m. meeting and my husband always leaves for his commute by 6:30 a.m. too. This means that our 4 year old is up too. This morning at 6:15 our lights flickered several times before our power went out completely. After an initial panic of "momma, it's dark", our little girl says..."momma, I know where my flashlight is! I'll go get it!". Even though the house was pitch black, she walked into her bedroom and knew exactly which bin to open and remove her new headband flashlight which daddy had just bought her the week before. She put the flashlight on her head and turned it on, then went to her dresser (where she keeps her "regular" flashlight) and used that flashlight to walk right over to our big family flashlight. Within just 2 minutes...before I even had the chance to light a candle, everyone had a flashlight! (I got the Princess flashlight). My husband got the big flashlight and we all finished getting ready and made it out the door right on time! I guess that I am influencing her more than I realized! How Organized are You? If this were to happen to you tomorrow how would you react? Would you know where your flashlight is so that you could continue on with your morning routine? Or, do you think that you would panic, stress out and allow the overwhelming feeling to ruin your day? The choice is really yours. Being organized doesn't take a lot of time and effort...what it does require, however, is consistency in what you do and how you do it. Make a "Be Organized" List Get organized this week. Make a list of just two things that cause you stress and anxiety. Then, put some thought into just a few little things that you can do to start organizing this part of your life.

Roy Dutt, Significant Member of Our Community Dead at 73

Roy Dutt died peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the General & Marine Hospital, Collingwood following a brief yet valiant fight against cancer, in his 73rd year. Roy of Wasaga Beach, beloved husband of Ruth (nee Hamilton) for over 48 years. Loving father of Robert and his wife Tahlia. Cherished grandfather of Calvin. Dear cousin of Jack (Carol) Terrell, Ruth (Gord Rae), Leslie Terrell and David Terrell. Roy will also be missed by his sister-in-law Madeleine Greer, niece Katherine Greer-Hulme (Bradley) and nephew Wayne (Lois) Greer and their families. Roy was a long time employee of Eaton’s. He believed in contributing to his community as a member of the Bramalea and the Wasaga Beach Lions Clubs, the Wasaga Garden Club and was a significant contributor to Community in Blooms. He will be missed by his family, friends, fellow Lions and his community. A Celebration of Roy’s life will be held at the Wasaga Beach Lions Den, 1724 Mosley Street, Wasaga Beach (at the Rec Plex) in the spring. Thin Ice This winter season so far has brought us bone chilling minus 20 with who knows what wind chill factor one day and the next plus 5 and sunshine with more ups and downs to come. So it is important to remember that like the summer months our marine environment must be respected and can turn deadly in a moment of carelessness. Tragedy struck this weekend with 4 snowmobiles making a wrong turn and going into open water on Muskoka River. 3 of the 4 snowmobile operators made it to land, tragically the 4th, a male not from the area did not. The Town of Wasaga Beach is blessed with numerous natural marvels two are internationally known; the Nottawasaga Bay – longest fresh water beach in the world and the Nottawasaga River – HMS Nancy and the war of 1812. Although beautiful and a draw for both tourists and residences alike these bodies of water and other smaller in nature can become dangerous. Due to the uncertainty of ice thinness, its composition, the current below it and a multitude of other factors, ice can never be considered as being 100 % safe. The following are some tips from the Life Saving Society of Canada; · Check the Weather: ice conditions and thicknesses change with it. · Always check the ice conditions: before you consider venturing out on the ice check its condition and thinness (they are not the same) with knowledgeable individuals, such as ice hut operators, resort operators and or snowmobile clubs. · Avoid using motor vehicles on the ice: don't assume if you walked on it you can drive on it. · Know where you are going: never take unfamiliar trails that could put you on unknown ice. · Never travel on ice at night: doing so reduces that chance of you being seen and or located if you break through the ice. · Never go on the ice alone: your buddy may not break through the ice and could help you out or get assistance to get you out. · Let someone know your route and destination: as with going on any trip it is an important safety tool to let someone know your route and destination so if you become overdue or do not arrive, emergency personal will know where to start looking for you. · Wear a thermal protection buoyant suit: this will increase your chances of survival if you do break through the ice. · Carry ice picks, an ice staff and a rope: these tools can save your life if you break through the ice. · Children should never play on or near any ice. Once again at no time should ice be considered as 100 % safe. Any information in regards to safe thicknesses are generally for new clear hard ice, which is very hard to judge as; how ice is formed and its thickness changes from location to location on any body of water at any given time. Snowman Mania 2013 celebrates Family Day Weekend Snowman Mania 2013 kept the family busy on Family Day Weekend February 15 to 18, 2013 with plenty of activities. I attended the opening ceremony on Friday, February 15 and collected interviews for Beach Corner from Holly Haire-Ellis, Special Event Coordinator, Mark Bannerman, President of the WB Chamber of Commerce, Denise Potter, VicePresident of the WB Chamber of Commerce, Tanya Snell, Coordinator for the Opening Ceremony, Ehab Masad, owner of Harvey's, Dr. Dina Ghobrial, Cathy Holland-Hendry from Cathy's Flowers, Joanne Blouin from Rogers TV and Presenter at our recent WBSFF and Mrs. Barber, Teacher at Worsley Elementary Public School. It was a chilly night but everyone came out and didn't let old man winter interrupt their fun with the snow maze. This large snow maze took three days to build from February 12th to February 14th. Tanya Snell who organized the Kick-Off –Community Block Party was a recent guest on Beach Corner. According to Tanya, 300 volunteers came out to help build the maze at the Canadian Tire parking lot with the help of Youth volunteering through leadership students helping with set up. Tanya showcased her “What's Up Hut” for the first time in public that night. Tanya explains: “It's a work in progress for over a year and hope to be a great local resource for resident and tourist to be able to find businesses and events and all the wonderful things Wasaga Beach has to offer.” The ice carving competition was the focal point of the evening. Two ice sculptors were busy on a stage with their blades and had 20-minutes to create an unbelievable work of art. The winner went to a Snowman figurine ice carving created by Danielle how appropriate for the event. It was displayed the next day at the Chili Cook-off. I met up with Joanne Blouin from Rogers TV who was shooting a promo video and conducting some interviews for the town of Wasaga Beach with her husband, Curtis Dafoe. We were entertained by a magician/illusionist, a flame juggler, a human piñata and some of our local businesses were on site such as Boston Pizza, YMCA, Youth Centre, face painting and the evening culminated with a beautiful display of fireworks. The next day, I went to the Chili CookOff located at the RecPlex, great attendance. The spicy aroma filled the cold air. For a small fee your taste buds got to judge the best chili. There was a jail set up and spoke to Jail House Joe who was under house arrest with the OPP Community Policing as he got caught trying to sabotage the chili but would be set free if all their chili sold out. Everyone had their favorites but in the end, the winner went to TD Canada Trust, Mark Bannerman, runner up was 97.7 The Beach and 95.1 The Peak and in third place Wasaga Beach Fire Department. Once again, BeachBooster was a proud sponsor of Snowman Mania and look forward to next year! Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Member of Promote Wasaga.

This year we celebrate our third annual Blues Fest down at Stonebridge on September 13 – 15th. But did you know you can celebrate a Rhythm and Blues Fest at the 45th street Wasaga Beach Beacon Restaurant every Wednesday night? Barrie night clubs step aside because we have the Wayne Buttery and The Groove Project band, a group of local musicians from Penetanguishene, Midland to Orr Lake that have hosted a Wednesday night jam at the Beacon for the last four years. Not only are they a group of very accomplished musicians, they play a range of pop, rhythm and blues and blues numbers that just makes you want to jump up and move while they add in several original numbers putting together a show that will impress you. What’s notable about the band is their tight orchestrated style and signature harmony that makes every number they perform sound like their own offering their audience high entertainment value. If you check out Wayne Buttery’s website, these musicians are no push overs. Individually these artists have appeared or performed with a who’s who of soul, blues, R&B, and jazz including James Cotton, Wilson Pickett, Dutch Mason just to name a few. Is this another best kept secret at the Beach? I had no idea we had such a fun entertainment hideaway every Wednesday night right here in Wasaga Beach. Add a bit of local fun and it is not unusual to hear the band members introduce and sometimes roast a few of the regular patrons that make up a loyal following for the Wednesday night entertainers. It doesn’t just stop there; of the many music jammers that show up, don’t be surprised to be entertained by the noticeable level of talent and impressed by how well they play and sing. The band’s friendly and engaging style makes the audience feel special and every jam partner feel welcomed and appreciated. It’s just plain fun to be there and be entertained. I even had the opportunity to get up there one night and shake some of the rust off some of my beats and drum rolls. So drop by and say hello to Wayne Buttery lead guitar and vocals, Charlie Hinkel bass and vocals, Dennis King on drums and vocals and their visiting artists along with some of our talented Wasaga Beach musicians and singers that chose to get up and woo the audience with their talents and skills in an atmosphere of fun and entertainment. They call Lake Simoce the “Ice Fishing Capital of the World.” Every winter, beginning just about this time of year, a city that ranks in size only behind Barrie and Orillia in Simcoe County forms on the ice of the lake. Its population in good winters can grow up to 25,000 people. Of course, they are transient, usually spending only a few days a week in their second home – an ice hut. Now, ice huts are not the drab, cold boxes of yesteryear. Most have a comfortable chair or two, a radio, and even a rug on the floor and a television set. And that allimportant hole in the ice. Which is not at all what one would have seen if they had decided to go ice fishing in 1815. Except for the hole in the ice. Georgian Bay’s native people long ago knew of the bounty that could be harvested deep in the cold waters of Lake Simcoe every winter. An early settler’s diary described Ojibway ice fishing two hundred years ago. A native fisherman was on the ice. “He had so completely enveloped himself in a large animal skin that no part of his body, head, hands, or feet were to be discovered. He sat over a square hole cut in the ice, with a short spear ready to transfix any fish which might be attracted to his bait.” Simcoe County’s ice fishermen readily adopted the Native spear. For decades, hundreds of tons of fish were speared each year. It was not until 1940 that spear fishing through the ice was banned on Lake Simcoe. Today, Ice fishing is a multimillion-dollar business. And it can be a hazardous one in these days of global warming.

Beach BOOSTER supports fun and safe sledding
Hello Wasaga Beach trail riders As of this writing we are able to enjoy all the Wasaga Beach trail system set up for this season. Our club house has been busy and riders have expressed their gratitude to the volunteers and businesses that have provided a world class trail system of over 30,000 K available to riders 24/7 across the province. The provincial governing body of snowmobiling the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) helps us provide trails with over 300 grooming machines and infrastructure bring over 230 snowmobile clubs together. Wasaga Beach has always been at the forefront of organized snowmobiling as one of the oldest clubs in the province. Over the years we have had the privilege to be able to support many charitable organizations with snowmobilers opening their wallets and volunteering to share all the good that clubs can provide. This season as part of Snowman Mania, we had our first annual "Snow Run For Fun" in support of the fight against breast cancer. Sponsored by the Town of Wasaga Beach, J&R Cycle and the Wasaga Snowmobile Club we had a great trail ride, hot apple cider in the dunes provided by the local Scouts group and a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings provided by the ladies of the Club. Honourable Kellie Leitch M.P. was in attendance and enjoyed her full day of activities at Snowman Mania. A donation from this event will go to the Kelly Shrires Snowmobile breast cancer organization one of the largest in the province supporting local needs. Our snowmobile club wishes to thank all the people who do not ride but endure all the extra traffic and provide land use to enable us to make the winter snowmobile season possible in our region. Continuing to support a year round tourism industry allows Wasaga Beach to shine any month of the year. "As in life or snowmobiling, slow down and enjoy the ride”

Literacy -- the ability to read and write-- is the foundation for education and social development. Yet, hundreds of millions of adults lack minimum literacy skills and millions of school-aged children are not attending school to obtain them. The Reading Action Program is a call to action for every Lions club around the world to organize service projects and activities that underscore the importance of reading and address specific needs related to illiteracy within their own community. Lions Can Make a Difference The Wasaga Beach Lions Club has already taken great strides to bridge the gaps in literacy and education. The Way Wasaga Was Wasaga Beach Speedway - 1/4 Mile Paved Oval...by Joe Bickerstaff With the racing season underway after an exciting weekend of racing in Daytona Beach, let’s have a look back at our own local Stock Car track here in The Beach. Wasaga Beach Speedway always provided an exciting evening of entertainment with regular Stock Car racing and the metal bending fun of a Demolition Derby. If I remember correctly, through the summer months there would be racing both Wednesday and Saturday evenings at our very own Wasaga Beach Stock Car track. Wasaga Speedway was a popular stop on the Ontario racing circuit that included Pinecrest Speedway and the CNE Track in Toronto. Our local track opened in 1956 and closed about 1970. There was originally a half-mile horse track on the property. The paved track was built later, inside the old horse track. The remains of the paved stock car track is still there. It's not easy to notice from the ground, but is quite clear in this aerial photo. The Aerial view of the Wasaga Beach Speedway pits were outside of the track, off turn 3 & 4 and the drivers entered location today the track from turn 4. There were grandstands along the front straight but these are long gone. In the mid 1960's drivers like Norm Lelliott, Doug Warnes, Ab Leach, Al Middlebrook and Tommy Cuzzilla were regulars at the paved Wasaga Beach Speedway. Many of the Wasaga Beach regulars were also well known at Sutton (then called South Shore Speedway). The track started to die out in the late 1960's and at the end of the 1969 season it appeared that it would close. The Stapleton brothers (Harry and Jack) purchased the track and gave the speedway a reprieve for the 1970 season when they ran "B" Modifieds and 6 Cylinder Diamonds. It appears the track closed at the end of the 1970 season. The local connection with Wasaga Beach of today continues as Mary Ann Watts of Wild Wing Wasaga Beach is related to one of the biggest stars of Wasaga Speedway! Tommy Cuzzilla is Mary Ann’s uncle and it was Mary Ann’s father, Colin Cuzzilla who at the age of 18, urged Tommy, only 15 at the time, to race! Tommy went Award winning driver Tommy Cuzzilla receiving another on to become one of the top drivers around! Two trophies from our trophy at Wasaga Beach Speedway - mid 1960's own local race track are on display at Wild Wing. One of these is the Red Cap Cup, presented by Carling Brewery to Tommy Cuzzilla at Wasaga Speedway in 1966. The remains of Wasaga Beach Speedway are located in the Provincial Park and are accessible to anyone. Look for the orange gate on the left side of Oxbow Park Road. Park your car on the side of the road and walk down the sandy lane. The track is only about 100 metres or so down the path. Stock Car Racing was a great part of Wasaga Beach history and Beach BOOSTER recognizes the popularity of racing today! We are pleased to welcome Sam Chapman and NASCAR in Canada to Beach BOOSTER!
