THE UNCONVENTIAL

COUTURIER Like no other figure in fashion, Jean Paul Gaultier has disrupted the rarefied world of couture with his transgressive vision of beauty

Dubbed the L’Enfant Terrible of fashion Gaultier has captivated the fashion world throughout his career, shocking and garnering praise in equal parts for his iconoclastic haute couture collections. Earlier this month Jean Paul Gaultier announced to the world that his recent spring 2020 couture show would be his swansong that, after 50years he would be hanging up his scissors and taking a step back. Since then the world of fashion has been aghast at losing it’s fashion rebel with social media flooded with reminiscences of Gaultier’s career from admirers and collaborators. The flamboyant creator Jean-Paul Gaultier who trained under Pierre Cardin founded his eponymous fashion label in 1982 though he has also served as the creative director at French luxury house Hermès from 2003 to 2010 and most recently with contemporary clothing brand Supreme has long been known for pushing the boundaries in fashion and blurring the lines between men’s and women’s clothing. His irreverent style and provocative reputation brought him both fame and contempt from other fashion designers

13

14 LUXURY LIVING

Born in the Paris suburb of Arcueil, Gaultier was deeply attached to his city, which provided inspiration to his many collections. Neighbourhoods such as Pigalle and Saint-Germain, monuments like the Eiffel Tower and the Moulin Rouge, and the most emblematic Parisians, from ToulouseLautrec to Juliette Greco, fuelled his imagination. The punk and Ska scene of London also provided an immense source of inspiration taping into his rebellious nature resulting in many tongue-incheek fashion ranges such as his 2018 cigarette range and who could forget the conic bra he designed for Madonna or the braless bra! Throughout his career Gaultier has dressed stars dressed stars from Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett to Madonna and Lady Gaga and Rihanna to models and IT girls such as American models Gigi and Bella Hadid and the Kardashian’s. Whilst Gaultier was indeed a rebel his work has been characterized by a stylistic consistency: jacket and pants constitute the basic link between male and female wardrobes. The masculinity of doublebreasted jackets, fitted coats, leather jackets, overalls, trench coats, smocks, and down jacket are juxtaposed by his love of corsets, stockings, garters and of course he Benton stripped tee’s.

15

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

In 2018, Gaultier brought his flamboyant nature to the stage with his own hit cabaret show based loosely on his life story, called Fashion Freak Show, which opened at the Folie Bergère in Paris. Part revue, part catwalk show the acclaimed show takes an extravagant, yet tender, look at the designer’s flamboyant, sometimes scandalous, often fabulous life and achievements. Jean-Paul Gaultier’s strong personality and his multifaceted universe have for decades influenced the worlds of both fashion and street clothes. He has enabled people to think about the place of clothing in contemporary society. Breaking the last taboos of the late twentieth century, his designs have exalted the theme of androgyny, brought men and women closer, moved to put an end to the prejudice against age, given sublime expression to the encounter between worlds and cultures, and associated memory with the strictly contemporary he was is a couturier with supreme talent and a subversive sensibility.

16 LUXURY LIVING

Inspired by punks, burlesque, screen goddesses, genderbenders, fetishists and subcultures of every stripe, Gaultier’s collections shocked couture audiences, yet the impeccable craftsmanship of his clothes commanded admiration and respect

THE FUTURE OF FASHION IS

NEUTRAL

Over the last few years a growing number of changes in how we perceive ourselves have taken place, the most radical being gender with the lines between boys and girls blurred as more and more people identify themselves as fluid or gender neutral and what happens in society fashion follows American Actor, Billy Porter wears Christian Siriano Tuxedo Gown at the 91st Academy Awards

Thom Browne’s Golf Collection 2019

With more than one in 10 millennials identify as transgender or gender non-conforming the concepts of masculinity and femininity no longer defines the clothing people wear. Both men and women

are choosing to define themselves on their own terms rather than how people think they should be perceived. For years women have been able to wear men’s styles in public from blazers to jackets to tuxedo’s and suits with some styles often referred to as androgynous, but for men to wear women’s fashion in public well that is a different matter altogether think back to David Beckham wearing a

sarong during the 1998 French World Cup and how he was ridiculed by the press yet today stars like

Kanye West, Jared Leto, Pharrel Williams and Harry Styles happily wear women’s styles and no one bat’s an eyelid. So what does this mean for the fashion community?

Of course genderless fashion has been on the runway for decades thanks to a few renegades, think Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and Dame Vivienne Westwood who, for years have for been blending men and females styles together but for other brands the race to catch up has begun and if we look at the catwalks of the last few year we can see more and more brands following suit

with W.Anderson, Balenciaga, Tom Ford Burberry, Tommy Hilfiger all showcasing co-ed collections, Nike’s gender-neutral activewear collection, Dior Men’s transparent shirts, and Thom Browne’s Instagrams of men in heels and skirts.

28 LUXURY LIVING

For a fashion designer adopting a gender neutral style can be highly cost efficient, why bother to design and create two separate collections for males and females when one will do but is this just a style phase or is gender neutral fashion here to stay? In a word yes, 38% of Gen Z-ers strongly believe that gender no longer defines a person as much as it used to, and 27 percent of millennials felt the same way and of these two generations they account for $143 billion in spending over the next four years

So who should we be looking out for in 2020? MCM German brand MCM is further pushing its transformation into a full fashion brand with underwear and loungewear. According to the company, it’s MCM’s entry into the first ethical and ecological collection. Comprising 13 underwear and additional genderneutral lounge- and sleepwear, the collection features Demeter-certified biodynamic Egyptian Ginza cotton boxers, briefs, cropped tops and leggings in black and white with branded waistbands, and cognac-colored silk pajamas and robes with the classic visetos. LOEWE Once a traditional brand, Loewe under the direction of J.W Andersen has gone and gotten a lot more contemporary offering a genderless look for its new spring / summer 2020 collection. Both the women’s and men’s collections are indistinguishable with shared design details such as skirts, dresses, suits, and ruffles. Even the brand’s accessories are blurred, with just the sizes of the bags as the major difference. ONE DNA After a successful crowdfunding campaign with Kickstarter, New York-based designer Travis Weaver launched One DNA. The collection offers a simple proposition with sophisticated deftness: Basic clothing designed without the limitations of gender, size, or race in mind. Weaver doesn’t see the collection as erasing gender, but rather ignores the dividing line between women’s and men’s clothing. With non-binary standards, the label’s collections offers a range of wardrobe staples such as oversized woven tees, cropped hoodies, and freeform tunic shapes constructed using soft cotton and cotton blends. Gender-neutral in both silhouette and fabrication, One DNA’s design makes everyone feel included. 29

WILDE VERTIGGA Specialising in sharp asymmetrical cuts and bold colours, Wilde Vertigga is a brand for the wild at heart. Their range online suits the needs of smart-clothes lovers, with structured coats and shirts, and those who prefer casualwear, with cropped trousers and t-shirts. GUCCI Gucci has always questioned tradition, and even more so today under Alessandro Michele’s vision. For his debut collection, Michele introduced pussy bow blouses, sheer tops, and lace on men that were strikingly similar to his women’s collection. Today, Gucci has put genderforward celebrities such as Jared Leto and Harry Styles at the forefront of the movement. LOUIS VUITTON Another traditional, heritage brand, Louis Vuitton’s step into the unconventional is one that’s surprised many. Nicolas Ghesquiere, the creative director for womenswear, is pushing boundaries by dressing women in the structured and bold while menswear creative director Virgil Abloh continues to push the boundaries within his mélange of the street and sophisticated style categories. His futuristic gender-neutral Paris Fashion show featured space and science fiction themes, implying that in the future, gender fluidity would be the new norm. The models wearing sharp suits were actually girls giving the impression that they want to look like tough men.

RUTH TOMLINSON LAUNCHES A

UNIQUE COLLECTION WITH GEMFIELDS

CELEBRATING THE PURPOSEFUL IMPERFECTIONS WITHIN Renowned for celebrating unconventional beauty and spotlighting the individuality of each handselected gem, British jewellery designer Ruth Tomlinson is known for her raw, handwrought aesthetic affinity to gemstones Drawn to the Earth’s most unique and natural treasures, Hatton Garden based designer Ruth Tomlinson is renowned for celebrating unconventional beauty and spotlighting the individuality of each hand-selected gem. Compelled to explore this narrative further, Tomlinson has partnered with Gemfields, the world’s leading supplier of coloured gemstones, to create a truly unique collection. Launched in November the limited-edition collection, entitled JARDIN, features exquisite Gemfields’ emeralds, which Tomlinson selected for their otherworldly inclusions. Occurring naturally within the mineral composition of the gem, this “garden of inclusions” makes each one entirely unique. Inspired to create a collection that would tell the story within the gemstones – a message mirrored in Gemfields’ “A Story In Every Gemstone”, and in their recent VOID exhibition – Tomlinson set about sourcing complementary gems. These include exquisite “salt and pepper” diamonds, which add a celestial-like depth and mystique to the aesthetic of the designs, and angular antique baguette cuts, which pay homage to the strata and formations of rock in the Earth’s crust, in which these beautiful green gemstones are discovered. From the bench of her Hatton Garden atelier, Tomlinson has transformed the treasures into a series of three one-of-a-kind pieces: a statement drop earring, cocktail ring and matching pendant necklace, each featuring Gemfields’ Zambian emeralds exclusively. Choosing to mix both 14K yellow and 18K white gold in her signature unpolished finish, she masterfully marries antiquity with modernity, along with references to the material’s natural history, adding her signature granulation to finish.

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

We spoke to Ruth Tomlinson about the collection What do you love most about emeralds?

JARDIN Collection - Pricing

Emeralds are typically known for their vivid tones, but the beauty for me is actually in the paler or included varieties, which are much less celebrated, but in my opinion, even more striking. I’m always fascinated by the heritage of gemstones. I find that the older or rarer they are, the more I’m drawn to them. The inclusions make each gem completely unique, created at a moment in time, in a particular place, never to be repeated – truly magical.

Why are responsibly sourced gemstones important to you? In every facet of the brand, we’re attempting to be as responsible as we can be, using recycled gold, sourcing antique diamonds and gemstones, rather than new ones, and championing the repurposing of old jewellery into new, which we do a lot through personal commissions. Our gemstone-sourcing plays a huge part in all of this: the provenance of a gemstone is something we demand to know, as do our clients. Gemfields are renowned for their transparency, which makes working with them such a pleasure. It’s essential that we share these values with every partner we work with.

Emerald & Diamond Sweeping Asymmetric Cluster Ring £9,200

How did this collection come about? I’ve always found beauty and romance in the story of gemstones and the inner world within them. When I heard about the Gemfields VOID exhibition with Dan Tobin Smith earlier this year, which used video and sound to magnify the tiny microcosms within gemstones, I was hooked. I reached out to Gemfields to discuss how I could design a collection which would celebrate the perfectly imperfect inclusions within their gemstones. Emeralds spoke to me more than rubies; that was just instinctive, and when I stumbled across the emerald with subtle peppered inclusions, I knew I’d found something special to work with. My jewels always take form at the bench: for me, there’s huge pleasure and value in letting the idea flow from there, in letting the gemstone guide the way. With this collection, the emeralds had to take centre stage. I worked hard to ensure the settings allowed plenty of light to reflect the incredible inclusions within. More unusually for us, I decided to use a mix of yellow and white gold to add contrast to the deep green, and then a flourish of diamonds to finish. The dazzling and unique trio, the collaborative collection truly exemplifies both Tomlinson’s and Gemfields’ passion for the individuality and beauty found. The collection is available exclusively on www.ruthtomlinson.com 36 LUXURY LIVING

JAMES BOND SUNGLASSES Ahead of this year’s hotly anticipated film, luxury sunglass designers Barton Perreira unveil a three series capsule collection

41

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

James Bond is the quintessential stylish gentleman and ahead of the release of 25th instalment of the James Bond franchise, No Time To Die, high end eyewear

company Barton Perreira recently announced a global licensing agreement with EON Productions as the eyewear partner featured in the film.

Consisting of three distinguishable styles the Barton Perreira x007 Collection will comprise of; Joe - a polished black classic rectangular style frame with mineral glass lenses, Norton -a polished tortoise round P3 frame with a keyhole bridge) and Courtier – a sleek titanium and matte finish acetate aviator.

42 LUXURY LIVING

When thinking about how to dress James Bond in this latest film, I knew that everything about his look had to be instantly iconic and definitive. We chose pieces that are going to withstand the test of time as a classic, while also very much being steps ahead of the current moment. Each piece needed to be what I like to call the ‘answer,’” said Suttirat Anne Larlarb, costume designer of No Time To Die. “When Barton Perreira sunglasses were suggested, they immediately ticked all the boxes of what a number of our Bond looks required – and across a variety of settings and circumstances in the story, they were indeed the answer.” The Joe and Norton frames will come with a certificate of authenticity card as well as custom branded 007 sunglass case, cleaning cloth and sleek, black carrying case. The Courtier will come with the custom branded 007 sunglass case and cloth. Frames will range from $440 - $625.

u “James Bond embodies many things Barton Perreira represents – style, innovation, design and affinity for high quality, luxury items – and we’re proud to see him in our frames,” said Patty Perreira, co-founder and designer of Barton Perreira. The frames will be available for purchase on BartonPerreira.com, 007store.com and in all Barton Perreira stores and authorized retailers.

HUBLOT STRIKES GOLD WITH THE CLASSIC FUSION GOLD CRYSTAL WATCH Hublot proudly presents the Classic Fusion Gold Crystal. A watch whose dial boasts the rarest form of gold on Earth: gold crystal Gold has always intrigued mankind. To understand this love of the yellow metal, you need to dig deep, deep in the history of time and our planet. One of the rarest metals in the world, its beauty has been admired by cultures that span the entirety of documented human history. In fact, all the gold you see today is truly stardust, the result of a cosmic collision of black holes or neutron stars that smashed into each other. Most of the gold found in the crust and mantle of the Earth are microscopic dust particles embedded in rock; far less is actually in nuggets found in bedrock or mines. But of all the variations of gold that one sees in the natural world, the rarest is crystalline gold. The new Hublot Classic Fusion Gold Crystal watch pays homage to these rarefied pieces of gold. Unique, delicate and flamboyant, the dial of the Classic Fusion Gold Crystal is decorated with gold crystal made from flakes of gold. Like a precious work of art, which needs to be framed, the dial is fitted into a black ceramic case of a Classic Fusion Gold Crystal watch, available in 38 mm or 45 mm diameters. It houses the HUB1112 calibre, a mechanical movement with automatic winding and a 42-hour power reserve. A black alligator strap stitched onto rubber allows you to wear this rare object on your wrist. Priced at €20,800 / £ 17’400 every one of these limited edition watches is unique so no two watches will be the same.

Luxury Travel Trends

for 2020

Influences outside of the travel industry will this year play a huge factor in travel trends for the year ahead, 2019 bore witness to Brexit, climate change activism, and natural catastrophes around the world from flooding in Venice to volcanic eruptions in New Zealand. So what if any will these factors play in the luxury travel industry?

Here we take a look at what to expect in 2020

66 LUXURY LIVING

ECO This has been on the agenda for several years now but each and every year the momentum grows bigger with consumers looking to reduce their carbon footprint on today’s society with Swedish teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg creating a whole new concept of flygskam, which means flight shaming. So rather than taking a plane to the most talked-about destination on the planet, trendy travellers are now looking at destinations which are accessible via trains, road or water.

67

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

SPACE Richard Branson, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezo are all putting their money into developing space travel and following years of development, Virgin Galactic has announced that this year they will take members of the public on a 90-minute sub-orbital journey into space. A stunning ‘Gateway to Space’ Spaceport departure lounge has been built in New Mexico where the first commercial space flights will take place. But this is just the beginning Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin space company recently launched its 12th crewless test of its New Shepard rocket, pushing its first flights with passengers to 2020.

68 LUXURY LIVING

VEGANISM Along with climate change Veganism is one of the fastest-growing social movements, and as such many travel providers are scrambling to catch up so they can cater to their needs providing vegan friendly accommodation offering 100% animal-free products and experiences. In the UK Saorsa 1875 became the UK’s first vegan hotel, with 11 rooms at its Perthshire location. No wool, silk or feather duvets appear in the rooms and the restaurant is purely plant-based. Look out for vegan-only retreats and cooking escapes becoming the new norm.

PET With more than half (55%) of global pet owners saying that their pet is as important to them as their children, it’s no surprise that 2020 looks set to herald a new era in pet-centric vacations. We’ll see travellers putting the needs of their beloved pets well before their own when it comes to selecting where to go, where to stay and what to do. 42% of global pet owners agree that in the coming year they would choose holiday destinations based on whether they can take their pets and 49% would be willing to pay more to stay at an accommodation that’s pet-friendly. Reflecting this trend, the number of pet-friendly properties continues to rise on Booking.com while savvy to this appetite, accommodations around the world will continue to look for innovative ways to up the ante when it comes to pet-tailored offerings and amenities, such as complementary dog day beds, pet spas, dedicated room service menus and even specially designed pet restaurants. Animals on vacation can definitely expect a five-star experience.

70 LUXURY LIVING

SECOND CITY TRAVELLER According to Booking.com travellers will adopt second-city travel, meaning the exploration of lesser known destinations in a bid to reduce over-tourism and protect the environment. Expect to see companies respond to this demand by introducing functions that make it easier for travellers to identify second-city/neighborhood destinations through understanding traveller’s trip preferences and matching these with alternative or lesser known destinations in their chosen country or region. Likewise increasing collaboration across the travel eco-system will see more awareness campaigns and infrastructure improvement drives to entice visitors to take the road less travelled.

DNA HERITAGE Fuelled by the recent rise in genealogical curiosity and affordable at-home DNA testing —ancestry trips, genealogy tours will be a growing trend this year as travellers explore their DNA roots. Another growing trend related to the heritage of individuals is Pilgrams’ following in the footsteps of religious figures. Pilgrimage and faith-based travel isn’t a new trend, but in 2020 it is expected to become a more prominent niche in the travel industry with people coming from all over the world to complete famous pilgrimages such as the Camino de Santiago in Spain, providing a unique opportunity for tour operators.

OCEAN LINER OF THE SKY

Flight shaming has become a huge movement in the battle against climate change but one Swedish Company has taken inspiration from our past to offer a sustainable once in a lifetime expedition to the North Pole by reintroducing the airship. 84 LUXURY LIVING

It was back in May 1926 that the first airship visited the North Pole on board was the famed Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and Italian engineer Umberto Nobile following a successful expedition the pair fell out and Umberto Nobile embarked

upon an ill-fated solo journey which resulted in his airship crashing several members died and Nobile had to wait six weeks before he was rescued. During this time

Amundsen had taken part in an international search but sadly he was never seen again and that was the last time an airship flew over the North Pole until now!

pool and is the social hub of the hotel, offering a laid-back atmosphere during

the day with chilled summer music, delicious small plates and light lunches. By night, it transforms into a sophisticated eatery, serving simple, elegant dishes showcasing the local produce alongside innovative cocktails keeping

FindingLove AT ATTHE THECLICK CLICK OF OFAABUTTON BUTTON If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to find love then like so many others you may have thought about joining an on-line dating site Today approximately 39% of couples find love online but it wasn’t always that way. Until several years ago, online or internet dating was often considered taboo when mentioned in social circles, people frowned upon the dating practice of meeting people from the internet, and thought it was only for freaks or those with major social issues. But, as times have changed, technology and society have both advanced to a new stage in the dating game. These days online dating is now considered the norm and people who once considered it only for weirdo’s are booting up their PC’s, creating online dating profiles and contacting other members looking for love. Statistics show that between the months of December - February online dating sites are at their busiest with a 25 to 30 percent increase in new member’s registrations alone with the 7th January statistically the optimum day for those looking to find love. But surely finding love online can’t be that easy! No it’s not, like everything in life there are Pro’s and Con’s so here we take a look

117

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Pros IT CONVIENENT Balancing work, school and a social life is hard enough, and throwing dating into the mix is such a juggling act. Then there’s all those dry periods where there just doesn’t seem to be anyone physically around you who seems like dating material. Online dating is kind of like online shopping: it’s faster, efficient, you can browse whenever you want and all the candidates are in one place – So no more bar and club hopping! NO MORE BARS One of the best advantages to online dating is in the way that potential daters meet each other. You no longer have to worry about looking out of place sitting in a bar all alone unless you really want to. By using online dating services and perusing profiles, you can read about a person, see them in photos and videos, hear their voices and make a judgement based on all of that information. Having this knowledge is far superior to meeting someone in a bar or any other random location for that matter because you know from the start what you’re getting into. THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER It’s just so much easier and safer to cling to your social circles sometimes, because they get you, but, online, you come across people from different parts of the city and from social demographics that you wouldn’t normally even talk to. By using dating services online expands your horizons. NO MORE FIRST DATES BLUES With the Internet and all of the information it can provide, those so called “first date jitters” will be a thing of the past. OK, you still may be nervous, but after getting to know a person online or talking to them on the phone, or via Facebook eliminates that dreaded feeling of anxiety. YOU’RE (MOSTLY) SURE THE OTHER PERSON IS SINGLE It’s just the most frustrating thing ever, you’ve meet someone you really like you’ve spent forever thinking of great things to talk about, you’ve put great effort into your appearance only to find out they’ve actually in a relationship and just like to flirt as “friends!”. Online dating saves you from feeling a fool. OK it’s not a failsafe option but someone would have to be pretty devious to create a profile whilst still in a relationship.

119

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Cons COST While there are some websites that are completely free, most come with some sort of sign-up fee. Otherwise, the no-fee introductory period might be very short, and the “review your matches for free” teaser usually doesn’t come with a free option for contacting those matches. Think carefully about the expense before you dive in. Generally, the overall experience and quality of the site will be better with paid sites. Moreover, the amount of money you can save by not having to go on endless dates will easily outweigh the money you spend on a dating website. DON’T BE NAIVE Online dating is not fool proof, people can put whatever they want on their profile (including photos), so until you meet someone in person, you never really know who you’re about to meet. You have to keep your guard up and make people earn your trust. Don’t be naive or assume that all profiles have credible information. People lie and tweak their information and more often than not use out of date photos or filtered images that show them in their best light – So be prepared to be disappointed sometimes. IT’S NOT THE SAFEST Your dating mate may be pretty hot but you don’t know this person at all and how do you know what their telling you is the truth anyway. OK so it’s the same in real life too, but in the virtual world you’re way less likely to have mutual connections. NO SURPRISES On the downside of online dating, you can lose the element of surprise by making use of all of these dating tools. It may seem like something is missing when you find that you already know someone before even meeting in person. If every date is planned and scanned, where is the random surprise aspect that brings strangers together? There’s something to be said about a chance meeting that could turn into a relationship. OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT SEE You’re putting yourself out there for the whole world to potentially see. For those who love privacy, this is a tough hurdle to overcome. Yet, if you try and put up a less than honest picture or bio, you will get less than effective responses from the online community. That said, you might look so hot that you will be inundated with every horny guy or girl on the planet, which is kind of what you want since then you can choose the best. 120 LUXURY LIVING

THE SPLENDOUR OF THE

Mughals & Maharajas Montblanc push the artistic boundaries with the new Montblanc High Artistry, A Celebration of the Taj Mahal Editions which celebrates the rich artistic traditions of the Mughal dynasty in India and the influence of one of its most enlightened rulers, Shah Jahan

Limited Edition 1 Black Myth

The striking black and white design scheme of this edition is inspired by the legend that Shah Jahan planned

to build himself a mirror image of the Taj Mahal, only in black. It was supposedly intended to stand on the opposite side of the Yamuna River from his wife’s resting place.

Decorated in black and white, it is made from white gold and encrusted with black sapphires and brilliant-

cut diamonds. The crown cap gets one 6.24-karat brilliant-cut diamond. The peacock feather is set with individual diamonds totaling about 13.68 carats, and its center is adorned with a round opal cabochon that

may be detached to reveal a lotus flower in the mother-of-pearl marquetry beneath. The 18-karat yellow gold pen nib is engraved with two lovebirds and is set with a brilliant-cut diamond.

Limited Edition 1 Tears of the Moon

At the Mughal court and throughout the empire, emeralds had a special name and meaning. Called “Tears of the Moon” because of their mysterious green fire ranging from lunar opacity to clear transparency, emeralds were often inscribed with sacred text. These dynastic heirlooms passed from father to son, were worn as personal talismans.

Made of 18-karat yellow gold and adorned with rubies, emeralds and diamonds that are set in a style remi-

niscent of traditional Kundan stone setting. At its centre is a 10 karat step-cut emerald with the peacock

feather set with square and individual-cut diamonds; approx. 14.79 ct.; centre adorned with an individual rose cut diamond, detachable to reveal a miniature enamel painting of a bird beneath. Like the other two versions the nib is again made of 18-karat gold adorned with two love birds and set with a tsavorite.

art and architecture reached its zenith with the construction of the Taj Mahal of Agra. The

of Indian culture. The latest High Artistry edition evokes the opulence of Mughal orna-

The Montblanc High Artistry, A Celebration

of the Taj Mahal collection is made up of three different precious writing instruments, each limited to just one piece worldwide, making it one-of-a-kind.

The name of this edition draws inspiration

from the symbolism of the dagger in the

Mughal tradition as an insignia of power. Shah Jahan received a personal dagger from his own father at the time of his crowning to confirm his powerful status.

LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION... ON the surface, a city such as Cannes perhaps might not strike you as the place to host the world’s most famous film festival. It’s not a capital city, or even near one. Yes, cinema was invented in France - but that was in Paris, not Cannes. And sure, the weather in Cannes may be nice, but that certainly isn’t a unique selling point. So just how did a reasonably small resort town end up hosting the most prestigious film festival there is?

130 LUXURY LIVING

131

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Like much of the world as we know it today, the Cannes Film Festival exists as an indirect result of the rise of the fascist regimes in Europe during the 1930s. Its roots date back to 1932 when the first competitive international film festival was held in Venice. In those days, the Mostra di Venezia - and chiefly its awards - was as much about the national prestige of the participating countries as it was about the films. As the decade marched on, both the official selection and the prizewinners began to noticeably favour the countries of the fascist alliance, particularly Germany and Italy. Matters came to a head though in 1938 when Jean Renoir’s “La Grande Illusion” was overlooked for the festival’s top prize - known back then as the Coppa Mussolini (“Mussolini Cup”) - despite being the clear favourite amongst both festivalgoers and jury members. Instead, the Coppa was jointly-awarded to a two-part German film called “Olympia”, commissioned by Joseph Goebbels to document Nazi successes at the 1938 Berlin Olympics; and “Luciano Serra, Pilota”, made under the supervision of Il Duce’s own son. When the results were announced, the French were of course outranged and withdrew from the festival. Both the British and American jury members also resigned in protest at the idea that politics and ideology were able to stamp all over artistic appreciation. “La Grande Illusion” - a largely anti-war film - was subsequently banned in Germany and Italy; Goebbels himself labelling it ‘Cinematographic Enemy No.1’. But Venice’s folly turned out to be Cannes’ triumph. Later that same year, a group of critics and filmmakers got together to petition the French Government to underwrite the cost of running an alternative international film festival in France - one where films could be shown and compete without bias or political censorship. Afraid of upsetting Mussolini, the French government was initially lukewarm to the idea, but the powerful lobby group wasn’t going to be easily dissuaded. Headed by Philippe Erlanger (head of Action Artistique Française), Robert Favre Le Bret (who would become the festival’s longest serving president), and Louis Lumière (the co-inventor of cinema), the group put intense pressure on the government, which eventually caved in and gave the event the green light. The Festival International du Film was scheduled to kick-off on 1st September 1939, but the festival only managed its opening night before being closed down following the outbreak of World War II the following day. During the war the festival remained in hiatus, re-emerging for a second re-opening on 20th September 1946 – And thus The Cannes Film Festival was born Today, Cannes is the most famous of all film festivals and one of the largest media events on the planet. The festival has an annual budget of around €20m, half of which comes from the French Ministry of Culture and Communications (through the Centre National du Cinéma), with the rest from the City of Cannes, various regional authorities, and a large group of corporate sponsors. Each year more than 1,500 films from over 100 countries are submitted to be considered for a very limited number of berths in the official selection this attracts stars and starlets, famous directors, cinematographers, writers and of course the legions of fans. Careers are made and broken during the Cannes Festival, winning a prize means certain success, and directors who fail to make the grade, or producers who fail to get the funding, may disappear without trace.

The annual Awards given out include the following: Palme d’Or - Golden Palm Grand Prix du Festival International du Film - Grand Prize of the Festival (1946-1954) Prix de la mise en scene - Best Director Prix du Jury - Jury Prize La Camera d’Or - Best first film Prix du meilleur scenario - Best Screenplay Prix d’interpretation feminine du Festival de Cannes - Best Actress Prix d’interpretation masculine du Festival de Cannes - Best Actor Prix un certain regard - Un Certain Regard Award Prix de la FIPRESCI - International Federation of Film Critics Prize The most prestigious award given out at Cannes is the Palme d’Or (“Golden Palm”) for best film. The Palme D’Or is the logo of the Festival committee. The Internationally selected jury of movie professionals, grants many awards, including the Grand Prix (“Grand Prize”), the second most prestigious award. Each year a new poster is delivered, a new image created and a new message displayed. The posters for the Cannes Film Festival have become something of a comment on the events journey since it began. Since then the event has changed and grown in significance to become one of the film world’s most prestigious events with more than 30,000 industry attendees in situ on the French Riviera during festival week. This year’s 73rd edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be held between the 12th May – 23rd May with American director, producer and scriptwriter and filmmaker Spike Lee making history as the first person of black heritage to preside over the jury. Collect is the only gallery-presented art fair dedicated to modern craft and design, celebrating over 400 artists represented by galleries from across the globe, this year the Crafts Council has announced Collect will return for its 16th edition, presented for the first time at Somerset House in London. In

The Crafts Council founded Collect in 2004 with the aim to build the profile and sales for collect-

able craft and to promote the very best galleries and artists in the field. It continues to be the only gallery-presented art fair dedicated to modern craft and design.

This year, Collect is moving to a striking new home at Somerset House and is excited to be taking over a large number of beautiful rooms, presenting a new environment for Collect exhibitors to con-

textualise and curate modern craft. Collect will occupy the large gallery wings at Somerset House, overlooking the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court.

THE CYBERTRUCK INSPIRED

IPHONE

Since Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck late last year we have had numerous interpretations of the “cyber” effect with the cybergarage, cyberhouse and now the cyber phone…

Russian luxury tech company Caviar have recently an-

nounced the Cyberphone, an iPhone 11 Pro that’s been modified to look like Tesla’s electric truck. The company

says the phone’s aesthetic was inspired by the geometry of Tesla’s angular Cybertruck, which the company announced in November.

The rather chic phone comes with a titanium body and borrows design cues from the Cybertruck for the phone’s “geometry of lines, simplicity of forms, and versatility of materials. It’s essentially an iPhone 11 Pro inside a titanium case that protects it from all sides. On the front, there’s a

titanium screen protector that folds into a holder that props up the phone vertically when placed on a flat surface.

The super-luxe phone is limited to only 99 units and can be purchased at the Caviar website with process starting from $5,256

“The pen is mightier than the sword” is a familiar refrain. But how to make a pen mightier than any that has gone before it?

Luxury Italian pen manufacturer Montegrappa has found an answer. All things Norse have been making a comeback in recent years. From Rick Riordan’s Magnus Chase to Michael Hirst’s television saga and Marvel’s

breakout Thor franchise, there’s no doubt that Vikings have tightened their

grip on the popular imagination. Never mind that aficionados of the genre happily mix mythology and historical record: the fact is that Viking values have been enjoying a renaissance.

Montegrappa’s newest creation Viking is a design which reaches deep into

the realm of fantasy in both form and function. As well as possessing a body made entirely from precious metals, Viking’s articulated components and

special accessories make it a member of an exclusive new genre of luxury action figures. Like so many of the company’s ultra-exclusive designs, Viking challenges the limits of what a pen can be.

For Montegrappa, Viking is the sequel to 2018’s Samurai – a €10,000-plus

creation that sent ripples throughout the luxury world. With its ultra-limited Warriors series, the Italian atelier is channelling high craftsmanship into a new realm of high-end working miniatures.

The mechanical marvels of Viking aren’t just confined to its playful exterior. Inside, a patented pump-action system known as Power-Push provides state-

of-the-art ink filling. The fountain pen world’s equivalent of the tourbillon is making only its third appearance in a Montegrappa production model.

Available in burnished Sterling Silver with 18K Gold accents, 121 pieces have

been produced in reference to the 121-foot (37m) length of the Roskilde

6 – an 11th century Viking longship discovered in 1997. The same vessel is

the inspiration for the limited edition’s elaborate wooden presentation case. Only six examples have been made in 18K Yellow Gold – a pen that weighs a formidable 525g (18.5 oz.).

SAMSUNG UNVEILS STUNNING

8K BEZEL FREE TV Samsung have unveiled its next-generation QLED 8K TV with zero-bezel the flagship model for the year

160 LUXURY LIVING

The Samsung Q950TS 8K TV has a stunning, super-thin form factor with 8K resolution and surround sound audio.

It combines cutting-edge innovations that make the viewing experience more immersive with connected features that make consumer lifestyles more integrated to deliver the ultimate home entertainment experience.

The Q950 practically eliminates the bezel around the display to create a screento-body ratio of nearly 99 percent, the largest in the market.

When watching from about ten or fifteen feet away, consumers experience a stunning Infinity Screen effect where the bezels seem to disappear. The result is

an even more immersive viewing experience that eliminates the boundaries be-

tween the TV and its surroundings. In addition, the Q950 is only 15 millimeters

thin across the entire display. In combination with a completely flat black panel, the Q950 can lay flush against the wall or create a striking silhouette when placed on a media stand.

Based on powerful Samsung semiconductor technology, the Q950’s next-genera-

tion Quantum Processor 8K features improved AI upscaling capabilities that use

machine learning to analyze and identify the characteristics of individual pixels. It then restores different elements of the image to create a pristine 8K picture, regardless of the content source.

The Q950 also leverages the power of AI to ensure that nothing distracts viewers

from their content. While traditional TV sensors can only adjust screen bright-

ness based on the ambient light within the room, Adaptive Picture accounts for the distribution of light within the particular scene, ensuring that the TV can maintain a clear picture in bright rooms while still maintaining contrast.

Another common issue for consumers streaming content is the speed of their internet connection. AI ScaleNet ensures a smooth streaming connection by optimizing the available network bandwidth. It compresses content as it leaves the

content provider and then restores it after it reaches the TV to effectively cut in half the bandwidth needed for consumers to stream content. Samsung Electron-

ics is continuing to work with Amazon on this feature, utilizing AI ScaleNet from standard definition to 4K in Prime Video.

No price has been announced for any of the 65, 75 and 85-inch models in the in the Q950TS.

Rappers Delight We all knew the hip-hop lifestyle is all about the bling. It’s all about fast cars, the best jewellery, stunning girls and of course champagne. From Notorious B.I.G too Nas, hip hop artists have loved to brag about their affiliation with champagne brands but it seems talking about the bubbles isn’t enough for some … Here we take a look at three of the top hip hop artist who have released their own signature champagnes.

164 LUXURY LIVING

JAY Z Top of the list would have to be Armand de Brignac colloquially known as the “Ace of Spades”, owned by mogul and hip-hop artist Shawn Carter, a.k.a. Jay-Z. One of hip-hop’s favourite brands, legend has it that in was created following a comment from Frederic Rouzaud, the manager Cristal champagne who in an interview in 2006 threw shade on the hip hop community when asked about his thoughts on the popularity of Cristal among rappers at that time. “What can we do?” Rouzaud replied. “We can’t forbid people from buying it.” Hip hop artists called for a boycott of the brand led by Jay Z and low and behold later that year a striking new gold bottle of champagne appeared in Jay Z’s Show Me What You Got video and rest they say is history Most recently the brand has released its rarest and most expensive cuvee to date the “Blanc de Noirs Assemblage Three” which costs $1,000 per bottle. 165

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

DRAKE New to the arena is Canadian rapper Drake who recently launched his Mod Sélection, Champagne brand after teaming up with California drinks entrepreneur Brent Hocking.

Most recently the brand unveiled two new varietals billed as “exquisite masterpieces from a lauded harvest year comprise of Mod Sélection Réserve and Mod Sélection Rosé.

Mod Sélection Réserve Vintage 2008 exudes a noticeable elegance and finesse in the bead. Aromas of rich, ripe fruit open beautifully in the glass. On the palate, orange peel, dried apricot and pineapple leave place for brioche, nutmeg and clove. Full bodied without heaviness, this is a vintage that proves the reward that comes from waiting.

166 LUXURY LIVING

Mod Sélection Rosé Vintage 2008 boasts a remarkable deep-salmon hue, emblematic of the rare Saignée method. On the palate, an immediate focus of concentrated and complex fresh red fruit – strawberry, blood orange and plum. Then, honey, ginger and sweet spice, true of such a vintage. Perfectly balanced acidity results in a finish both graceful and opulent.

The combination of strict selection processes at harvest, the most delicate extraction of first press “coeur de cuvee,” rigorous control of fermentation’s, and use of the rare Rosé de Saignée production method have come together to create the purest expression of balance and terroir found in Champagne today.

In keeping with the brand’s inaugural releases, the 2008 vintage varietals are packaged in rich brown metallic bottles,

with avant-garde décor and adornment process. Delicate symbolized patterns and embellishments are handcrafted and applied by the finest artisans in Champagne, ensuring no two bottles are ever alike.

This announcement marks the third and fourth exclusive releases from the house of Mod Sélection, all of which have received 98 points by renowned wine critic, Anthony Dias Blue. Upcoming variants include NV Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, Vintage 2008 Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, NV Blanc de Noirs, and a uniquely styled single vineyard estate grown Tête de Cuvée.

FIFTY CENTS Following in Jay Z’s footsteps serial investor 50 Cents launched his Le Chemin du Roi, Champagne meaning ‘the king’s path’.

Created by Champagne Castelnau a cooperative of growers

across 900 hectares in Reims, France, each bottle features a 14 karat gold-plated emblem resembling the king chess piece with the range comprising of a brut, rosé and blanc de blancs, retail-

ing for $199, $325 and $999 respectively, although only the pink Champagne has been released so far.

168 LUXURY LIVING

50 Cents claims the champagne is “for winners only

This is not the first time this cooperative has produced a pricy fizz for a celebrity, having been the supplier of the sparkling wine for Angel – the Champagne brand from American singer Mariah Carey.

Launched in 2010, it was priced at $1,000 for a brut NV, making it the most expensive example of its type in the history of Champagne. However, it has since been withdrawn from the market. Made with hand harvested grapes from some of the top vineyards

throughout the Champagne Region of France, the Red Fruits and crisp acidity have been carefully balanced to create a soft and smooth wine.

THE BENEFITS OF INVESTING IN

LESSERKNOWN FINE WINES

Now is the time to start your collection of previously overlooked grape varieties that offer superb value, great taste, and exceptional aging potential

171

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay may

dominate wine collections and menus worldwide, but the world of wine is far greater than those three powerhouse grape varieties can make it seem. In fact, close to 1,400 types of vitis

vinifera—the species of grape responsible for fine wine—grow around the world, and the resulting bottles are nothing short

of astounding when it comes to flavour and value, even if they are notoriously difficult to pronounce. Conveniently, these

wines are becoming more widely available than ever before, giving collectors and casual connoisseurs more opportunities to discover a new favourite.

Regions like Greece, Austria, Eastern Europe, and even pockets of the United States, Italy, and France offer a wealth of indigenous grape varieties that showcase the diversity of the

flavour spectrum of wine. In fact, even established wineries including Bordeaux First Growth icon Château Lafite Rothschild and drinks powerhouse Moët Hennessy have invested heavily in lesser-known wine-producing locales, even planting vineyards in China.

With the fall of the Soviet Union and increased globalization, wines that were once exclusively local table wines are now

available around the world, providing drinkers with a myriad of options, which Chris Munro, Head of Wine for Christie’s in the Americas, thinks all wine enthusiasts should seek out.

And exploring can be easy, since many unknown grape varieties share DNA and thus flavour and aromatic similarities to more

popular, international varieties. For Pinot Noir enthusiasts, Eric

Danch of Danch & Granger, a United States-based importer that specializes in Eastern European wines recommends reds

made from the Saint Laurent grape in Austria, which are similarly light in body and offer bright, berry and cherry fruit

flavours. Lovers of Sauvignon Blanc, or crisp whites can look

to Northern Italian whites such as Verdicchio and Vermentino; Hungarian whites like Furmint or

Hárslevelű; or Greek bottlings like Assyrtiko. In regions like China, wine estate Ao Yun is experimenting with both classic

varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and indigenous grapes, offering drinkers both tradition and adventure on the palate.

172 LUXURY LIVING

173

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

The reason many of these grapes are experiencing a renaissance is, in some estimations, the result of failed experiments with internationally popular varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot which— contrary to the example set by Super Tuscan powerhouses—aren’t a cash crop in every ecosystem.

“ People have gone back to indigenous varieties that they knew did well historically, and that’s a good thing, compared with planting more popular varieties,” says Munro. “ You can really get an exceptional bottle for $20 or $30 if you look to these underappreciated regions.”

As classic fine wines like Grand Cru Burgundy, classed-growth Bordeaux, and Barolo become increasingly rare and expensive, sommeliers and collectors are embracing wines on the fringe, which are increas-

ingly becoming more available. For instance, legendary Copenhagen restaurant Noma has embraced many Serbian wines, and San Francisco’s two-Michelin-starred Californios has included Hungarian wines on its pairing menu.

Winemaker Jason Holman, who’s based in America’s ground zero for traditional grapes, Napa Valley, points out that across California, consumers are eager for values that combine pedigree with a favorable price, making bottlings like Napa Valley Albariño, Tempranillo, and obscure blends a profitable (and

delicious) option. “Our tasting room in Napa is packed with people who are tired of the same $200 Cabernets and Chardonnays, and they are thrilled to taste a new wine. It doesn’t hurt that these grapes thrive here, and offer a price point that is virtually unheard of for more classic wines in our region.”

From top restaurants to tasting rooms and wine bars, it’s abundantly clear there’s room for more diversity in wine, a fact perhaps no one points out as well as Munro: “Super Tuscans are things that appeared from

nowhere. It was a $20 wine in a wine store that today is worth thousands. There’s scope for another wine like that. And why not?”

FAMED COGNAC HOUSE REMY MARTIN LAUNCHES ITS NEWEST COGNAC

AN INSPIRATION FROM THREE ARTISANS

176 LUXURY LIVING

Since 1724, the House of RÊmy Martin has produced premium spirits that consistently appeal to the world’s most discerning connoisseurs. A profound love of the land, a continuity of family ownership and a passionate commitment to excellence has sustained RÊmy Martin for nearly three centuries

177

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

Recently Rémy Martin have unveiled Tercet an inspiration from 3 artisans: Rémy Martin’s Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau, Wine Master Francis Nadeau, and Master Distiller JeanMarie Bernard. The complimentary trio worked together distilling, blending, and forming a bond of companionship whilst this new cognac took shape. They combined their expertise to reveal the best of the Cognac terroir and the essence of grapes from Petite and Grande Champagne. The result is a blend from a selection of fresh and fruit-forward of eaux-de-vie (distillates) with a singular taste profile that breaks the conventions of cognac. A blend that is the epitome of the Rémy Martin ethos, one of collaboration for excellence. Baptiste Loiseau joined the House of Rémy Martin in 2007, first training under the former Master Pierrette Trichet. Agronomist and Oenologist, Cognac-born Loiseau is passionate about wine and

cognac. His advanced discernment of taste and aromas, and his holistic knowledge of the process of making exceptional cognac, position him as the leading edge of innovation in Cognac.

While still in training with Trichet, Loiseau identified a singular kind of eaux-de-vie as part of his

research. These eaux-de-vie, which originated from the vineyards of Francis Nadeau – a loyal partner

of Remy Martin’s for generations – varied in taste from those traditionally used by Rémy Martin: it was more fruit-forward, more “raw”, and closer to the essence of the grapes. Baptiste became convinced that these eaux-de-vie had the potential for an exceptional, new defining blend and began to set them aside every year for future use.

178 LUXURY LIVING

After becoming Cellar Master in 2014, he decided to further explore how these eaux-de-vie could reveal a new signature style for the house. To test this intuition, Loiseau sought the expertise of Nadeau and Bernard. Together, they explored the aromatic profile, finding a new angle on Cognac, that allows the flavor of grapes to be fully appreciated. When tasting Tercet, one immediately discovers a new facet of cognac that is both discerning and delicious. On the nose there is an explosion of fresh notes of fruits, reminiscent of the grapes of Petite and Grande Champagne. Extremely round, it coats the palate, punctuated with notes of exotic fruits, and spices. The finale, with a touch of toasted almond, is extremely long and complex. Rémy Martin Tercet is 84 proof (42% alc. vol.), the highest of all existing Rémy Martin blends. This higher alcohol content drives the flavor and maintains the essence of the grape through the tasting experience. Tercet is best served in a white Burgundy wine glass. White Burgundy is traditionally aged on the lees, the same way Remy Martin distills its spirits on the lees, a defining and distinct feature of the House. The high stemmed glass with a narrow top enhances the purity and freshness of the blend. Recommended to be enjoyed on ice, the essence of the fruit is revealed. Tercet is a tribute to the origins of Rémy Martin as the only major Cognac house founded by a winemaker in 1724. Now, ready to be released first in the United States – in limited amounts – Tercet celebrates an alchemy that embodies perfection. 179

Situated in the lesser known but still picturesque Austrian town of Sรถlden the four day Wein am Berg festival has long been a highlight for gourmets, foodies and oenophile where top-class winemakers and the culinary elite come together in what can only be described as beautiful surroundings 3,000 m above sea level in front of the unique glacier backdrop.

183

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

Dating back to 1999 the festival began when Anton Kollwentz, the former president of Austria’s Burgenland vineyards, paid a visit to Das Central, Sölden’s first five-star hotel. During his stay he soon discovered that the hotel’s former manager, Gottlieb Waschl, had a passion for wine and the two oenophiles set about on a mission to bring their homeland’s two most precious commodities together: wine and winter sports!. On the final day the festival culminates in the Big Bottle Party hosted on the Giggijoch mountain restaurant, which sits 2,000m above sea level. Here the corks of magnums, jeroboams and methuselahs are popped with guest chefs from both host nations taking charge of the kitchen. This this is one party not to be missed.

DALMORE CELEBRATES 180TH ANNIVERSARY WITH AN EXCLUSIVE 60-YEAR-OLD RELEASE To celebrate the distillery’s 180th anniversary, Dalmore have launched a highly exclusive Dalmore 60 Year-Old, with only 3 bottles produced In an ode to its illustrious history, The Dalmore 60-Year-

Old has been created from two twin casks – the last of the era overseen by the founding Mackenzie family – which have been lying in repose side by side in the Scottish Highlands. Exceptionally rare, this extraordinary single malt whisky is limited to just three decanters.

Master distiller Richard Paterson, the genius behind a

number of exceptional whiskies over the years, created The Dalmore 60-Year-Old by reuniting two extremely rare ex-sherry casks from six decades ago. The spirit was

first distilled on June 7, 1951, and each whisky has been slowly evolving in its own unique way ever since.

Only three high end decanters of this whisky go on sale, though no price point for this 41.7% ABV Scotch has been mentioned as of yet.

CELEBRATING A BYGONE ERA WITH

The Golden Age of Travel Series

Fine single malt whisky distillery Macallan working in collaboration with master French crystal maker, Lalique, finally completes its collection commemorating a time of glamour, style and grace in the world of travel with the release of The Airship

196 LUXURY LIVING

Drawing on the nostalgia and prestige of the golden age of travel in the 1930s, the story told through each release in this series celebrates

the first era of international travel by road, rail, sea and air. A period of luxury and elegance, this was a time when RenĂŠ Lalique arguably created some of his most iconic work.

Launched in 2015, The Golden Age of Travel showcases five exquisite Lalique crystal decanters inspired by an iconic mode of transport, con-

taining historic Macallan whiskies. Each decanter is contained within a premium leather presentation box created by leather masters PiĂąavall

in Ubrique, Spain that each evoke the recognisable design elements of classic 1930s travel trunks and luggage.

The Ocean Liner RICH AND REFINED

The exceptionally rare Macallan whisky in this first decanter was distilled in 1937, first bottled in 1971 at 34 years old, and rebottled in

2015. Like the era it celebrates, it is a rich and warm single malt with a refined sense of style. Notes of sultanas, cocoa and mature wood reflect the rich elegance of the dark oak panels and mahogany staircases of the

great ocean liners of the 1930s. With a freshness that belies its vintage, it is balanced and smooth with notes of light spice.

This individual Macallan is history in a glass that also speaks of a by-

gone time at the distillery. Distilled two years before the outbreak of

the Second World War, the whisky reveals clues about the distillation and maturation of The Macallan at this time; when a steam railway ran

past the foot of the hill below the estate, bringing in raw materials and taking away deliveries of finished casks.

The Motor Car

A LUXURIOUS EXPERIENCE During the 1930s the automobile business flourished and made strides that would set the tone of the industry for dec-

ades to come. Automobiles became a form of art, a way for owners to value elegance and innovation. Distilled in 1937 the whisky relives an age of bold steps and innovation, and creates its own art through complex and invigorating notes of polished antique wood on the nose, similar to the finishes of a luxurious 1930s motor car.

Each limited edition decanter in the series is encased within a beautiful premium leather presentation box created by

leather masters Piñavall in Ubrique, Spain. Piñavallis are renowned for their work with some of the world’s leading fashion brands. In keeping with the Golden Age of Travel idea, the box consciously evokes design elements of classic

1930s travel trunks and luggage and for the motor car edition is racing green in colour, to reflect the automobile theme.

Amber sunset in colour, with a velvet sweetness and delights of sweet oak vanilla pods, this exquisite whisky is balanced with a distinct, yet supremely delicate peat smoke. The unexpected, but welcome peat element retreats to reveal a linger-

ing smoothness on the palate. Flavours of peach, dried apricots and orange with hints of dark chocolate come to life in a gentle build, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

The finish is intricate, yet incredibly smooth with a long, velvet-like combination of the sweet scents of peach and zesty

berries, with a subtle edge of peat. This whisky highlights the commitment to selecting the finest quality spirit from our

stills – the finest cut that helps create the signature viscous mouth-feel and fruity flavour synonymous with The Macallan. 198 LUXURY LIVING

The Airship

THE CULMINATION OF A STUNNING SERIES Calling back to an elegant period in time where the world opened up to new adventures, this fifth and final release from the exquisite Golden Age of Travel series brings our exploration of this fascinating period of history to a close.

A collaboration with French crystal makers Lalique, contained within this exquisite vessel is The Macallan 1940 (35

Years Old) that distils the essence of bygone eras, a time of great change and the seemingly endless opportunities through international travel. The 1930s was a time of luxury and elegance, and during this period casks were carefully laid down at The Macallan Distillery to rest in warehouses, embarking on their own extraordinary voyage.

The liquid is beautifully showcased in a handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter, and features an illustration of one of the most innovative developments of the era in the first civil air transportation machine. This era allowed the discovery of new and exotic places made possible through luxury travel.

This is the final release in this remarkable limited edition series with just 48 units made. Prices range for each series from â‚Ź50,000

The Aeroplane

AN UPLIFTING ADVENTURE With the introduction of the first commercial airlines, adventure awaited those ‘jet set’ few who boarded the almost

magical, great silver flying machines - in anticipation of international destinations they had only ever dreamed of. An

exotic experience heady with glamour, style and romance. While the lucky few took to the skies, high above the River

Spey, the Macallan distillery in the 1930s still employed three horses for ‘general duties’. The early years of the decade were tough for all distillers, largely due to the Great Depression and Prohibition in the US. But whilst output was

modest, the noted quality of The Macallan was maintained.

This second release in The Macallan Golden Age of Travel series conveys the decadence of air travel during the era and

hints at heady exotic destinations yet to be explored. Dis-

tilled in 1937, first bottled in 1972, and rebottled in 2016, this 35 years old Macallan is kind and uplifting, just like the famed air stewards of the time.

The Steam Train

LUXURY TRAVEL BY STEAM Featuring an exceptionally rare Macallan, distilled in 1937, this scarce single malt vintage was first bottled in 1973, and rebottled in 2017. Deep russet red in colour, it is a rare and special Macallan that

explodes with flavours of spice, toasted oak, Seville oranges and rose oil. The sensuous natural colour suggests a higher proportion of second fill Spanish sherry-seasoned oak casks were used, supported by American oak - a result of the shortage of casks during the years of the Spanish Civil War. Over

the years this whisky has developed a unique character, defined by a vibrancy of flavours on the palate and a long smooth finish.

The inspiration for the handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter design comes from Lalique’s founder, Rene Lalique, who designed and made the ornate glass panels in the ‘wagon présidentiel’ on the infamous Orient Express.

AQUA REVOLUTIONIZING THE WORLD OF YACHT DESIGN

216 LUXURY LIVING

Dutch company Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design have unveiled a first-of-its kind groundbreaking concept, liquid hydrogen powered superyacht aptly titled Aqua

217

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Hydrogen, which has been labelled as the fuel of the future for the last decades has finally found its way to the world of Superyachts. The de-

signers at Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design created in collaboration with Lateral Naval Architects, the design for the first 112m LOA su-

peryacht based on liquid hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Now a fully operational 112m concept Superyacht with a speed of 17 knots and a range of 3750 nautical miles is realized, placing AQUA solidly among Superyacht peers in terms of size, performance and usability. Simultaneously meeting and exceeding current superyacht standards, AQUA

optimizes hull, energy and space efficiency while providing a maximal

superyacht experience at the highest comfort level for discerning owners. AQUA is fueled by hydrogen, a unique concept which represents a sig-

nificant progression towards achieving a new balance between nature

and technology. The system is based on the use of liquified hydrogen, stored at -253°C in two 28-ton vacuum isolated tanks. The liquified hy-

drogen is converted into electrical energy by proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, with water being the only by-product. The generated

electrical energy is transmitted to AQUA’s switchboards, where it is dis-

tributed to provide power for propulsion, auxiliary systems and hotel services. Large batteries buffer the generated electricity to ensure power

demands are always met. And thanks to the electric propulsion AQUA is a very quiet superyacht, with very little noise or vibrations.

218 LUXURY LIVING

Designer Sander Sinot explains how he and his team managed to integrate the hydrogen-electric system capable of catering for all onboard

energy needs without having to compromise on aesthetics, comfort or

usability: “With every project, I challenge my team and myself to surpass ourselves. For development of AQUA we took inspiration from the lifestyle of a discerning, forward-looking owner, the fluid versatility of water

and cutting-edge technology to combine this in a 112m superyacht with truly innovative features.” Sinot soon realized they had set themselves an extraordinary goal, so started working on an extraordinary design: “Our challenge was to implement fully operational liquid hydrogen and fuel cells

in a true superyacht that is not only groundbreaking in technology, but also in design and aesthetics.”

219

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

The flowing exterior lines of AQUA are inspired by ocean swells – the surge of energy induced by winds and currents, boosted by the gravitational forces that control the ocean’s tides and configured with a five-deck set up, utilizing forward interior space through the high sheer line which subtly descends from bow to aft. The yacht has been designed to provide those on board with the closest possible proximity to the water.

Entering AQUA is like entering a world of privacy and space. The spectacular, extremely spacious and beam-wide owner’s pavilion, occupying the front half of the upper deck, offers an abundance of privacy. The pavilion is arranged in a vast open-plan area of interlinked spaces, divided by finely crafted wooden screens providing intimacy and subdued lighting. Both at the starboard and port sides, floor-to-ceiling band windows supply an amazing impression of openness and freedom. The ceiling, at a height that varies from an ample 280cm to an impressive 380cm at the large central skylight, is supported by an intricately crafted wooden structure. The bedroom section is located at the yacht’s axis and offers an endless sightline all the way up to the AQUA room at the bow. The owner’s pavilion is completed with a large bathroom, dressing room and an intimate private spa section. The AQUA room, located at the bow, at the far end of the owner’s pavilion, offers a top-of-the-world feeling and endless views from the best position on board. Located on AQUA’s beach deck, close to the waterline, the expansive and naturally outfitted VIP state rooms stand out by virtue of their spacious design and highly elaborate furniture. The VIP cabin and other state rooms are focused on openness, luxury and comfort, providing a maximum sense of freedom in a highly detailed minimalist Japanese beach-style setting. The indoor health & wellness center is a water-world of serenity, where the reflecting waves of the water feature complement the onboard environment with their soft, vibrating motion. With an exclusive hydro massage room, a yoga space and workout floor and a massive, gym-wide hatch which opens to reveal the ocean’s surface at water level, creating the perception of exercising and relaxing on an island in the sea.

Movie fans have been waiting an age for the next instalment in the Avatar franchise and now we know why. Director James Cameroon has been helping Mercedes Benz with the design of their latest concept vehicle the Vision AVTR

229

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Inspired by the box office movie AVATAR: The name of this ground-breaking concept vehicle stands not only for the close collaboration in developing the concept car but also for ADVANCED VEHICLE TRANSFORMATION showcasing just like the film a completely new interaction between humans, machines and nature. The holistic concept of the VISION AVTR has distinctive inside-out design structure inspired by several creatures from the movie AVATAR. With its stretched “One Bow design and organic design language, the VISION AVTR offers a visionary outlook on the design of the future. Just like the movie biometrics play a huge part in the functionality of this vehicle. Instead of a conventional steering wheel, the multi-functional control element in the centre console allows human and machine to merge. By placing the hand on the control unit, the interior comes to life and the vehicle recognizes the driver by his or her heartbeat and breathing. By simply lifting the hand, a menu selection is projected onto the palm of the hand, through which the passenger can intuitively choose between different functionalities. For example, real-time 3D graphics can be used to explore the fictional world of Pandora from different perspectives. The curved display module creates the visual connection between passengers and the outside world.

230 LUXURY LIVING

Passengers can also benefit from this interaction by using various functions intuitively through projections in the palm of their hands. The occupants also perceive their surroundings in a totally new way through screens. The change in perspective is unique: for example, a bird’s eye view of its surroundings is possible and the world is noticeable from a great height. In addition, each passenger is connected to the other occupants. The car measures the vital signs of the occupants, adjusts the mood of the lighting and, if the children are excited in the rear seats, can direct the children’s pulse towards the seats as a sign of the parents’ mood and inform them.

231

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Sadly this is just a concept vehicle, for the moment anyway but who knows what the future will bring!

232 LUXURY LIVING

For the first time, the VISION AVTR concept vehicle is using a revolutionary battery technology based on graphene-based organic cell chemistry that is completely clean of rare earths and metals. The materials of the battery are compostable and therefore completely recyclable. In this way, electric mobility becomes independent of fossil resources. As a result, Mercedes-Benz underlines the high relevance of a future circular economy in the raw materials sector.

BELL UNVEILS ALL NEW UPDATED

ELECTRIC AIR TAXI

The year is 2050 and nearly 70 percent of the population will be living in urban areas, cities will have outgrown their current transportations systems and the need for urban mobility solutions has never been greater 234 LUXURY LIVING

Fortunately, the transportation industry has reached an inflection point, and many of the world’s top minds are working toward solutions for the optimal smart city design. American company Bell Textron remains at the forefront of

this pursuit with a clear mission of finding solutions of finding solutions to the infrastructure challenges of tomorrow’s transportation networks recently unveiling their updated design for its Nexus air taxi, with a new “4EX” version.

Using fewer ducted fans and a longer wing than its predecessor, the“4” represents the number of ducted fans, the “E” for

electric, and “X” for experimental. The original Nexus design, now referred to by Bell as the “6HX,” utilized six ducted fans and was envisioned as a hybrid-powered aircraft.

With demand growing for inner-city aerial transit, Bell is pivoting toward that mission with the Nexus 4EX. Capable

of flying four to five passengers plus a pilot the Nexus 4EX will be able to travel for distances of around 100 km (62 mi) at a time at a cruise speed of 241 km/h (150 mph). For longer flights, Bell is also working on a hybrid-electric variant of the 4EX, which will use a turbo-generator to charge batteries.

Bell is also looking to build an eVTOL offering fully autonomous flight controls and because eVTOL aircraft are so novel Bell is taking the liberty to rethink many aspects of the aircraft’s flight controls, including removing the helicopter’s traditional collective, cyclic and foot pedals.

THIS GORGEOUS FLYING CAR CONCEPT IS

INSPIRED BY VINTAGE F1 FERRARI’S

238 LUXURY LIVING

Italian firm Lazzarini Design Studio has been inspired by the 1950’s Ferrari to create this stunning new Flying car concept called FD-One

Lazzarini Design Studio has a reputation for making the impossible – possible, com-

ing up with conceptual ideas for cars, yachts and aircraft that stand out for their looks as well as being able to blend vintage elements within futuristic architectures.

More recently, Lazzarini unveiled FD-One, which stands for Formula Drone One. A two-seat passenger flying vehicle that prom-

ises to deliver both on performance and aesthetics with a retro-futuristic look.

Taking inspiration from the 1950’s Ferraridesigned Formula 1 race cars this flying ma-

chine pays homage to the 70-year-old racers but with an updated twist with the wheels

replaced with propellers. In fact the FD-One is actually a tri-copter powered by a hybrid

system that combines both electric motors with a V12 gasoline engine. In fact the FD-

One is powered by 6 electric motors: 4 in the front and 2 in the back, situated near the

propellers and with an all-carbon fibre body

weighing just 1,984 pounds the FD Once can soar through the skies at speeds of up to

310 mph, according to the designers for up to 3hours.

At present the FD-One is just a concept, but it’s a concept that Lazzarini believes can be

made into a reality with the design studio

looking for investors to help fund the building of a prototype.

With a large yacht comes lots of staff, so each of the 311 crew required to operate such a vast vessel will have their own private cabin, which equates to a staffing ratio of 1:2 per guest ensuring that guests have first-class service throughout every journey. Ocean Residences have described superyacht NJORD as

‘the next generation of private superyacht’ which ‘will be the home to an exclusive community of like-minded individuals who relish travel and sharing extraordinary experiences’

Other equipment will collect data on the coastal and marine environment as she travels around the world to some of the remotest destinations. Underwater drones and submersibles will map out the ocean floor using multi-beam echo sounders that will identify the contours of the sea floor and any shipwrecks resting there. To travel to and from M/Y NJORD there will be two Airbus ACH 160 helicopters available, both fitted with eight seats and capable of 400 nautical miles. At present there is currently only a single residence ship in service, The World, as other projects floated over the years have failed to launch. The superyacht is targeted at 2024 delivery. No shipyard has been involved in the project so far however, negotiations are understood to be underway. While cruising, NJORD will be equipped to carry out scientific and oceanographic research, with a gyroscopic telescope and drones monitoring the atmosphere.

YACHTING NEWS UNLEASH THE DRAGON

Mega yacht Dragon is the new flagship of Columbus Yachts, a Palumbo Superyachts brand. Built in just 27 months, it represents an Italian excellence of timeless elegance and constructive craftsmanship Dragon is the newest superyacht to be unveiled by Columbus Yachts labelled as a contemporary classic by her Italian yard, combining contemporary elements with classic proportions creating an elegant design that never goes out of style.

Her luxurious and yet sober interior created by Francesco Guida are warm, sophisticated and at the same time modern. The essences of the wall light wood and

TURQUOISE YACHTS UNVEILS PROJECT NAUTILUS CONCEPT

Turkish based Turquoise Yachts has partnered with DeBasto Design to unveil Nautilus, a 62- meter (203-foot) explorer yacht Unveiled at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Project Nautilus is described as a new and a different kind of explorer yacht— well adapted to its intended life as a go-anywhere

vessel, she offers the best interior accommodations, an extremely functional layout and all the

facilities and amenities that one can expect only on much larger yachts. DeBasto Design is responsible for both exterior styling and interior design.

“Naturally, we had to make accommodations for some professional grade cranes, says Luiz

DeBasto, founder of DeBasto Design. “To avoid a cargo ship industrial look, which would be inevitable using regular off-the-shelf cranes, I have ensured that the cranes are part of the

superstructure, integrated into the overall design, a unique and revolutionary solution. If you look at the profile, you will be hard pressed to spot the cranes.”

DeBasto adds, “Although almost invisible at first sight, there’s no compromise in the capacity of these two cranes, each one is capable of lifting 10,000 kgs (22,000 lbsmaste). These cranes

are engineered to provide safe launch and recovery of boats or submarines, or sailing vessels, or cars, or…whatever is within the 10,000 kg weight parameters.”

250 LUXURY LIVING

Another unique solution for an Owner’s stateroom, is the absolutely spectacular 270 -degree views of the horizon, even from the bed… in total privacy.

Additionally, there are five guest staterooms, a full-size movie theatre (that can optionally

be converted to a 7th guest cabin), a swimming pool on the aft main deck and a full Beach Club on the Lower Deck aft, with safe access from the interior of the boat. Two-fold- down

balconies enlarge the Beach Club area to provide close access to the water. To complete the wellness area, there is a Gym and a Sauna.

The top deck is another entertainment area that has a hot tub, surrounded by sunbathing

cushions, two conversation areas and a full- size bar. Forward, the Pilot House with radio room and captain’s cabin has full visibility as well as access to the wing stations.

The crew area was designed to offer an efficient service traffic pattern which is completely separated in all decks, starting from the Tank Deck level to the Top Deck for a professional and discreet service, including the access to the lower deck guest’s cabin directly from the

crew area. Besides the Captain Cabin on the Bridge Deck, there are 6 double ensuite crew

cabins on the Lower Deck, plus two lounges: the general Crew Mess and Galley is on the Lower Deck and there is also a small lounge for the deck crew in the forecastle, all connected

below deck. Ahead of the tender deck there is also a dedicated workshop space for tender maintenance and the mooring area is at the fore bow.

254 LUXURY LIVING

As with most memorable concepts, the first thing you’ll notice about Centauro is its daring design and

A SUPERYACHT FOR ALL SEASONS

London based studio, Bannenberg & Rowell Design, have unveiled their latest superyacht design the Project Telex, a 65-metre concept which with its layered deck progression resembles that of a military ship

Designed with four objectives in mind: adventure, active lifestyle, power and proportion pinned together by the “fundamental notion of freedom,” Telex is indeed a superyacht for those looking for adventure.

Measuring 65 meters there is space for up to 28 persons with seven staterooms that can accommodate 14 guests which comprise four lower deck double cabins and a master suite on the main deck with two additional family or guest bedrooms plus accommodation for up to 14 crew.

Communal areas promote a “modern open plan furnishing style” which is centred around a fireplace which creates

a cosy and comfortable atmosphere on-board. Large windows wrap around the yacht providing an abundance of natural light linking the indoor areas to outside spaces. A vast pool area is located on the main deck aft which is suitable for fun on a sunny day or relaxing watching the sunset. From here a staircase leads to the upper deck where there is a bar and sunpads.

The lower deck stern area includes a gym, dive shop, wellness area and optional submarine storage and “club room”.

Lamborghini become the first automaker to incorporate full in-car control by Amazon Alexa

258 LUXURY LIVING

At the beginning of the year Amazon announced that its popular voice assistant will be added to a handful of new vehicles with top marquee Lamborghini announcing that its Huracรกn EVO range will become the first supercars to incorporate the cloud-based voice service.

259

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Drivers will be able to use Alexa’s voice commands to do the usual list of tasks like make calls and connect to smart home devices. But what makes this specific use of Alexa so interesting is the ability to use the tech to control many of the car’s features, without ever having to take your hands off the wheel, such as adjusting climate, interior lighting and seat heating with a simple voice command. Alexa will even be integrated into the LDVI dynamic set-up (Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata) on the fourwheel drive EVO, taking the Huracán EVO to a new level of voice-activation capabilities: place calls, get directions, play music and audiobooks, check news and weather, and more – all you have to do is ask!

260 LUXURY LIVING

The Alexa integration also connects Lamborghini owners to the growing number of connected devices that work with Alexa. With a simple voice interaction, drivers in the Huracán EVO can control everything from entry gates to thermostats and lights, directly from the vehicle. The first step in a strategic collaboration with Amazon, the specially enhanced Human Machine Interface (HMI) system will allow continuous updating of Alexa’s functionality within Lamborghini models, and paves the way for future cooperation between the two companies: both companies are working to develop further connectivity innovations and integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The V10 Huracán EVO Coupé and Spyder which launched in 2019, is Lamborghini’s latest generation of the four-wheel drive super sports car model. With a new design for improved aerodynamics it is the first Lamborghini with predictive logic on vehicle dynamics control and features a fully-integrated Lamborghini Vehicle Dynamics Control System combined with all-wheel drive, and all-wheel steering, for redefined parameters of responsiveness, agility and easiness to drive. The 5.2 liter V10 naturally aspirated engine from the Huracán EVO delivers 640 hp (470 kW) at 8,000 rpm with 600 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. With a dry weight of 1,422 kg the Huracán EVO reaches a weight-to-power ratio of 2.22 kg/hp, accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and from 0-200 km/h in 9.0 seconds. Braking from 100 km/h to 0 is achieved in just 31.9 m, with a top speed of more than 325 km/h. A rear-wheel drive (RWD) Huracán EVO Coupé was announced in January 2020, offering a highly emotive, purist, funto-drive experience. First deliveries of the Huracán EVO RWD will commence in spring 2020. The Alexa option will be available during the course of 2020 on the whole Huracán EVO family, including RWD.

The south of France is synonymous for luxury and wealth, a European focal point for the world’s superrich, where over the centuries industrialists, aristocracy, bankers and royalty have all built palaces along it’s stunning stretch of the Mediterranean which today’s millionaires are now snapping up.

One such property is Villa Les Cèdres, located on the prestigious coast of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Villa Les Cèdres comes with pedigree no less , built in 1830 it was once the property to the Belgian king Leopold II, who after his exploitation of the Congo Free State (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), became the wealthiest man alive.

The Palladian palace comes complete with 14 bedrooms, a ballroom, a library, botanical gardens, an

Olympic-sized swimming pool and stables encompassed by 35 acres of stunning garden home to a whopping 25 greenhouses and more than 1,500 plants. Inside the atmosphere is decadent and slightly

worn, in keeping with the farm’s Belle Epoque heyday: large rooms, lamps, French doors, and floor-

to-ceiling portraits from the 19th century in ornate frames frame the walls. The wooden panelled library houses 3,000 books on flora and naturalism, including a 1640 edition of a botanical codex worth several hundred thousand euros.

In 1924, 15 years after Leopoldo’s death, Villa Les Cèdres was acquired by the Marnier Lapostolle family, the Grand Marnier liquor producers who used the land of the house to grow the bitter oranges

that are used to flavour the famous citrus liqueur. Les Cèdres remained in the Marnier-Lapostolle family until 2016, when Campari acquired Société des Produits Marnier Lapostolle (SPML), Grand

Marnier’s parent company who in 2017 placed the property on the market for a staggering €350 million (£308 million).

The recent sale of Villa Les Cèdres has dropped significantly but then the Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov who purchased it for €200m can indeed afford it.

Mr Akhmetov’s who is ranked as the richest person in Ukraine, already possess an impressive property portfolio and has a habit of buying only the “the most expensive” properties having purchased a £137m flat in London’s One Hyde Park, one of the UK’s most expensive apartments in the world.

FORGET SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, IT’S SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST

INSIDE THE LUXURY DOOMSDAY BUNKER

272 LUXURY LIVING

In a world where the Doomsday Clock sits perilously clock to midnight signalling the likelihood of a manmade global catastrophe it’s no wonder that the worlds super-elite are looking at alternative real estate options that can provide protection against any scenario whilst still providing the same lavish luxuries that they have become accustom to in today’s world.

WELCOmE TO THE WORLd OF SURVIVAL bUnkERS 273

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

There have always been a few people living on the edge of society who have talked about the “the end

of days” those who stockpile endless tinned supplies in their basement and fortified their properties

but there is one such man who has gone a step further. Building on recent doomsday capitalists where disaster preparation has become a multi-million dollar business Larry Hall has created a luxury development in a former military nuclear missile silo situated 15 stories into the Earth’s crust.

Aptly titled “Survival Condos” the first complex which has been called an engineering marvel, resides

in what Larry says is one of the strongest manmade structures ever created; a nuclear hardened bunker with walls as thick as 9 and ½ feet made from epoxy hardened concrete that was built back in 1960 to house and protect the Atlas Nuclear Missiles.

The facility which is located at a secret location in Kansas near Concordia, Kansas contains 12 luxury condos all of which have already been sold and come in two sizes a full-floor unit which measures

1,820 square feet and cost $3 million while a half-floor unit of 900 square feet, cost just $1.5 million.

274 LUXURY LIVING

Built to withstand a nuclear blast, during the Cold War in

the 1960’s, the facility can hold up to 75 people for over a five year period. During this time, residents of the complex can enjoy luxury amenities such as going for a swim

in the indoor pool complete with a waterslide, enjoy a flick

at the movie theatre, read a book at the building’s library, or grab a drink at the communal bar. The sprawling facility also includes a classroom, a dog park, a rock climbing wall, a general store, and a medical first aid centre.

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Given that the facility was built to protect against an “end of days” scenario it comes loaded with se-

curity measures which include a volcanic ash scrubber, nuclear biological and chemical air filtration and five sources of power ranging from a wind turbine

to generators and underground tanks to store 75,000

gallons of water, but also a reverse osmosis water filtration system.

Inspired by the 9/11 attacks in America, Larry Hall initially planned to convert the former missile silos

into data centres but later, the idea to transform the site into a bunker for Hall and his family materialized and the development soon began to take shape.

Even though the facility is designed to withstand a nuclear blast, Larry states that the main concerns that

he and his clients share is actually the end result of

any one of many potential manmade or natural disasters that will result in the break-down of society

and total civil unrest. In the event of a major disaster,

economic collapse or whatever the future may hold, there is one common concern that Larry and his tenants share, and that is the ability to protect them-

selves and their families when the government is no longer able to do so.

Inside the condos look surprisingly normal, with fully fitted kitchens, hardwood floors, fireplaces and walk

in wardrobes and to provide the illusion or normal

above ground living fake windows live stream, highdefinition images from above ground, showing the wind blowing across the Kansas plains. In the event of all-out catastrophe video loops can be played.

Mr Hall is now building a second complex which

according to the website, is three times as large as

the first complex and will sell out “well before it is complete.”

CELEBRATE LIFE IN THE

REAL SOUTH OF FRANCE New resort and residences, LUX* La Baraquette, is redefining the branded residences space with its fresh, playful and uncomplicated take on luxury

284 LUXURY LIVING

Propriétés & Co, the developer behind the project, handselected contemporary hotelier LUX* as operator, and jointly set out to deliver a new breed of branded residence in the charming port town of Marseillan in southern France. With an unrivalled package of benefits including its own 11-acre vineyard and wine club, car-free living and striking interior design by man of the hour Lázaro Rosa Violan, residences at LUX* La Baraquette offer five-star living without the five-star price tag. Prices range from €300,000 for a one-bedroom Garden Suite up to €4 million for one of the four luxurious Waterfront Villas.

285

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

A branded residence development typically comprises a luxury hotel linked to a residential offering, in which homeowners benefit from the operator’s reputation, services, facilities and management. This association allows owners the privacy of a permanent home but with the convenience and quality assurance of a 5* hotel. According to a recent report], there are currently 435 branded residential projects worldwide and nearly 300 more in the pipeline for development; 85% of all branded residences are hotel-linked. Not surprisingly (since the world’s first branded residence, the Sherry-Netherland, opened in Manhattan almost a century ago), North America remains the largest and most developed market for hotel-linked residences. However, other regions are flourishing. MENA is the fastest growing with a pipeline of +148% new projects, followed by Europe with 80% additional projects planned. The sector as a whole is forecast to grow by a further 27% in the next 3 years. With the huge potential for growth of branded residences in Europe, LUX* is taking the opportunity to carve the way for a new class of branded residence on the continent.

286 LUXURY LIVING

With the increase in demand for branded residences comes a shift in buyer preferences and diversity

in offering. With LUX* La Baraquette, Propriétés & Co is predicting the uptake from younger,

more diverse purchasers to increase in the coming years, and with this, have designed an appealing,

forward-thinking concept which will appeal to this younger, well-travelled, and eco-conscious buyer, yet remain true to the authenticity of the local area.

Jean-Francois Garneau of Propriétés & Co, comments; “We felt the traditional branded residential

offering was a little on the conservative side, a little too neutral for us. We wanted to create a branded residential product that wasn’t “all beige”, that was more playful, colourful and relaxed and really cap-

tured the essence of a second home… a place that is different from our primary residence and gives

us the opportunity to actually “live” differently. Of course, with 300+ days of sunshine, “Art de Vivre” all around us, and a leading operator-partner such as LUX*, inspiration for La Baraquette came easily. And although we offer many of the usual benefits associated with a hospitality-led resort - peace

of mind, convenience, premium amenities, investment security and lifestyle facilities - we are proud

COLOURFUL HOME ON CHELSEA’S MOST

‘INSTAGRAMMABLE’ STREET

306 LUXURY LIVING

Situated directly off the King’s Road, is Bywater Street, a peaceful cul-de-sac characterised

by an eclectic row of colourful cottages, con-

sidered Chelsea’s most ‘Instagrammable’ street. For those not au fait with social influencer

hotspots, the street is also better known as the

home of fictional character George Smiley, of the John Le Carré spy novels (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley’s People).

307

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Providing a rare opportunity to own a home on the popular street - where a local community has built among a number of owners that have occupied their properties for decades - Chelsea stalwarts Russell Simpson are selling a three-bedroom cottage at number 24 for ÂŁ2.975 million.

Recognisable with its pale pink façade, number 24 occupies a prominent position towards the rear

corner of Bywater Street. Complete with railed steps, sash windows and bay window, the home is a traditional Chelsea cottage in the heart of the Royal Borough.

Upon entering the 1,604 sq. ft. property is a large reception room with double aspects onto the front

and back, with a guest WC to the rear. On the lower ground floor is a private study, as well as openplan kitchen/dining room, which opens onto a patio.

The upper floors provide the main sleeping quarters, with two well-sized bedrooms and bathroom on the first floor. The master bedroom suite occupies the second floor, with direct access onto a patio terrace overlooking Bywater Street.

u

308 LUXURY LIVING

Jake Russell, Director at Russell Simpson, commented: “Bywater Street is one of Chelsea’s true hidden

gems. The colourful homes and peaceful ambience created by the cul-de-sac make it an incredibly popular place for its residents, as well as those looking for a unique backdrop.”.

“One of the biggest selling points here is the fact that location-wise you are in the throng of the action, with

all of the boutique shops, restaurants and galleries of the King’s Road at the end of the street. However, there are not many areas in Chelsea that feel like a quaint village community than Bywater Street, it’s a real plus for those that want to live in a quiet enclave of one of the world’s busiest cities.”

309

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

310 LUXURY LIVING

Popular with tourists and social media influencers, Bywater Street provides the perfect location for those looking for a unique photo opportunity. Featuring in over 10,000 Instagram posts, the street is Chelsea’s most popular destination for tagged posts on the social platform, whilst the hashtag #BywaterStreet is another popular choice.

Not limited as a popular Instagrammer hotspot, Bywater Street is also famously recognised as the home of fictional John Le Carré spy character George Smiley, who occupies number 9. The character is held in high esteem in Eng-

land, where he has become a pop-culture icon on par with James Bond. First appearing in Le Carré’s 1961 novel Call for the Dead George Smiley has featured in a number of novels by the famous spy author, including one of his most recent books A Legacy of Spies (2017).

The street was also a filming location for the 2011 film adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, starring Gary Oldman as George Smiley. The picturesque road was also a regular feature in the 1979 BBC drama series Smiley’s People, with Alec Guinness playing the role of the eminent spy.

Addressing the reasons behind is choice of address for prominent character George Smiley, John Le Carré said: “I chose Bywater Street for Smiley because it’s a cul-de-sac, which is always a headache for watchers. I reckoned

Smiley would give himself that sort of advantage over life. The intimacy of the street made it doubly difficult for a surveillance team to escape notice.”

A small tight-knit community, the residents of Bywater Street hold an annual summer street party, with the road closed by the local authority for residents to enjoy each other’s company.

24 Bywater Street is on the market at £2,975,000 with viewings strictly by appointment only.
