GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK

Sustainability has been a growing key word over the past few years and now affluent customers are putting their weight or should we say wallets behind the movement ensuring fashion designers and brands take stock

12 LUXURY LIVING

When you think of a green consumers you automatically think of Birkenstocks wearing hippies, but today’s fashion conscience millennial are any-

thing but, toady’s green consumers are more likely to be an affluent professionals dressed in an eco-friendly and animal-free power suit. Leading the way is environmental activist Stella McCartney.

Synonymous with eco fashion, Stella is a vocal vegetarian and animal rights activist like her parents (Sir Paul, and her late mother Linda, the photographer/musician/entrepreneur), and as a designer bucks the trend resolving never to use leather, fur or feathers in her creations and her sixteen-year

eco-friendly ethos has definitely paid off with many of today’s eco-friendly

celebrities backing her brand – She famously designed Meghan Markle’s reception dress.

Her rise to the top of the fashion industry has been swift she succeeded

Karl Lagerfeld as the creative director of Chloe just two years after graduat-

ing from Central Saint Martins at the age of 25. After four years where she

reportedly quadrupled sales, she left to launch her eponymous label in 2001 and did something what no fashion designer thought possible – she refused

to work with any kind of animal-derived skin and fur, and proved that when fashion is eco, it’s even more desirable.

She has introduced several innovative textiles and business initiatives over

the years to boost sustainability, and found sustainable or vegan alternatives

for materials like silk, cashmere, nylon and metals, and is helping to develop even better ones for her brand and the industry. Her Falabella bag is a great

example of this and has become an iconic and quintessential accessory. The

newest member of the family – the Falabella Box – is made from vegetarian leather and recycled plastic bottles becoming one of the brands best sellers.

At her recent AW19 fashion show, McCartney used the opportunity to

launch her #thereshegrows campaign, to ask people to sponsor a tree to save the Leuser Ecosystem, an ancient Sumatran forest. In her new collection, she included sustainable viscose from a certified forest, and had sourced organic

cotton and eco-canvas for her vintage-style dresses and boiler suits. Last year she opened the doors of her new ultra-sustainable, ultra-innovative store in Mayfair, where even the mannequins are made from a bioplastic material

composed of 72% sugarcane, which enables a significant reduction of CO2 emissions.

Recently she announced a collaboration, with Pop-Superstar Taylor Swift

inspired by her new album, Lover. The collection will be available for a limited time and will incorporate the colours, tones, and even lyrics from Swift’s

latest album, drawing inspiration from “vintage graffiti, band T-shirts, and

nostalgic memorabilia.” It will include tie-dyed tees, sweatshirts, airbrushed jackets, totes, and a reusable water bottle. Jerseys in the collection are made from sustainable organic cotton. A handbag in the line is made with Eco Alter-Nappa leather and a bomber jacket is made from sustainable viscose.

She has also released her latest collection with sports brand Adidas pushing the boundaries in women’s sportswear with the Fall/Winter 2019 collection. The versatile collection incorporates cutting-edge fabrics that help

reduce impact on the planet, without compromising on performance. The

materials are 70 percent recycled, and 50 percent of that is in the footwear alone. McCartney introduced a new, 4-D printed shoe that looked sleek and upscale which produces almost zero waste but introducing new technology

and creating recycled or sustainable fabrics is nothing new for McCartney, of course. She’s been working toward these impressive percentages since she first linked up with Adidas, in 2008, and even earlier with her own ready-towear collection.

David Beckham’s Fashion Label Unveils New

‘Peaky Blinders’

Capsule Collection London clothing brand Kent & Curwen coowned by David Beckham has revealed a new Peaky Blinders inspired capsule collection

18 LUXURY LIVING

Unveiled at London Fashion Week, the capsule collection labelled ‘The Garrison Tailors’ is a nod to the infamous Shelby family boozer from the hit show Peaky Blinders and includes staple looks from the 1920s-era show, including grandad shirts, waist coasts, wool overcoats and of course, the flat cap.

19

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Designed as part of the Autumn/Winter 2019 collection the whole collection remains true to its heritage with looks inspired by the 1920s a nod to its founders Eric Kent and Dorothy Curwen who stared the brand in 1926 but with an updated twist. “A rare image of Kent & Curwen’s founder, Eric Kent with his brother, soon after the end of WW1, became my creative starting point for next winter’s collection” say Daniel Kearns, Kent & Curwen creative director. “The grainy photograph shows a proud military man in uniform returning to 1920’s London, intent on establishing his club wear and uniform business in tie stripes, blazers and knitwear. Impeccably dressed at all times, be it at the racetrack, on the cricket pitch or lunching at his London club, Eric’s charisma would quickly propel him into high society, counting the Duke of Kent, Duke of Windsor, Errol Flynn and PG Woodhouse amongst his social circle. And then it struck me, would Eric have mixed in social circle as diverse as the likes of Tommy and Arthur Shelby, who would have been comrades from the war, as well as his high society friend? And if so, how would they have influenced Eric, both sartorially and culturally, where those returning from war found themselves in a new world where anything was possible. If Eric and his wife Dorothy were setting about creating this brand today, what would they be wearing, what would they be into and who would they be socialising with?”

20 LUXURY LIVING

The Autumn Winter 2019 collection was constructed with this thought in mind, creating a relaxed, modern wardrobe with a blend of sartorial and sportswear pieces, worn with a new attitude. Playing with the idea of formal British dress codes; uniforms and military references are reworked as sportswear and daywear. Reimagined college stripes and cricket whites are presented as eveningwear. Cropped jockey silks and jacket reference the Duke of Windsor coupled with tweed and plaid worn for a day at the races. On sweatshirts, t-shirts and rugbys, the classic rose is re-worked in dark tones, on army camouflage and handmade in bullion metalwork, referencing the sartorial and military themes of the season. In addition to Kent & Curwen’s AW19 season is its collaboration with British visual artist, David Shrigley. This six piece capsule collection consisting of classic sweatshirts, T-shirts and accessories – all feature David Shrigley’s illustrations and artwork inspired by Kent and Curwen’s take on reimagined British classics and its rose patch signature design.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE OF

PARIS Luxury jewellers Boucheron takes inspiration from the French capital for its new high-end jewellery collection ‘Paris Vu Du 26’

Frédéric Boucheron was the first among the great contemporary jewellers to open a shop in Place Vendôme, Paris back in 1983, and following an extensive 18months restoration project the historic Boucheron building pays tribute to the visionary spirit of its founder. From the windows of number 26 Place Vendôme you can view the Eiffel Tower and the stunning city below so it is little wonder that the artisans at Boucheron used this stunning backdrop to create an exclusive collection dedicated to the longstanding relationship between the brand and Paris. The new collection which translates to Paris seen from 26V in French comprises of 53 necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings all of which take inspiration from the silhouettes of Paris’s famous buildings. The creations have been divided into three chapters: ‘Paris’, ‘Place Vendôme’ and ‘26V’.

PLACE VENdômE Taking inspiration of the view from the windows of Maison Boucheron was the inspiration behind this pieces created in this collection. The Pavés De Crystal necklace, for example, mimics the light reflected off cobblestones after rain, and is highlighted by a 2.68ct F IF pear diamond that can be detached and made into a statement ring. The Duo Taille Émaraude, on the other hand serves as a tribute to the emerald-cut, to the Maison Boucheron logo, but also - and especially - to the shape of Place Vendôme, these double signature rings sport a 31.03 carats and a 32.50 carats yellow beryls, which are worn horizontally across two fingers.

3 26 V The heart and soul of the brand, the 26V series evolves around the very first Boucheron stone the maison has ever created. This precious rock is a combination of onyx, rock crystal and white agate, and creates an illusion of depth that evokes a staircase leading to the heart of the necklace. Like most of the jewellery in the collection, this piece is transformable: you can wear the necklace with only the tassels by detaching the stone, or only the stone by detaching the tassel. The collection also pays homage to Wladimir the cat who once lived in the Boucheron mansion and, in 1981, even appeared in the Maison’s ad campaign. This cute cat will always be with you as a cocktail ring studded with either colourless or black diamonds.

gentlemen — with the launch of its new collection exclusively dedicated to today’s modern man for those with a penchant for well-made, high-end accessories and luxury items.

In the past Tiffany has sold money clips, cuff links, rings and other traditional jewellery for men but now it’s seeking to put a more modern spin on what it offers men creating a collection that

embodies the spirit of the modern man: bold and confident, casual yet refined, a style arbiter with a discerning eye for quality.

The new men’s collection encompasses two ranges and includes nearly 100 designs ranging in price

from about $200 to $15,000 for jewellery and up to $75,000 and beyond for men’s home furnishings and accessories like cocktail shakers, ice tongs and beer mugs.

30 LUXURY LIVING

The Tiffany 1837 Makers pays homage to Tiffany & Co’s iconic hallmarks and ongoing tradition of crafting sports trophies. The collection is defined by concave and convex forms as well as motif inspired by hardware (think chains and dog tags). Also in this collection is a made-to-order trophy ring which is set to be a bold statement piece. The Diamond Point features a graphic motif that feature prominently on Tiffany & Co’s glassware and sunglasses. The texture, die struck and hand-polished, is now translated over to pendants and sterling silver cuffs. One of the most impressive items in Tiffany Men’s is the one-of-a-kind, handcrafted solid sterling silver and 18k yellow gold vermeil chess set—price available upon request. The range of designs in Tiffany Men’s represents a new chapter for the design house, signalling the brand’s expansion in the men’s luxury space. Inspired by the design ingenuity that has defined Tiffany & Co. for over 180 years, the new collections for men embody the hand of the artisan and the spirit of innovation. Informed by a sense of laidback luxury, Tiffany Men’s was created with the discerning taste and confident style that define the modern Tiffany man.

u Global sales show that more men are also buying for themselves these days: Sales of men’s luxury jewellery jumped nearly 22% between 2013 and 2018 hitting $5.8 billion last year, and the firm projects sales to increase from $5.8B to about $6.6B by 2023. Reed Krakoff, the company’s chief artistic director, who developed the collection, said that the men’s business hasn’t been a big focus at Tiffany in the past, but there’s a big opportunity given that half of the company’s global customers are men. The vast majority of them buy women’s jewellery. #TIFFANYMENS

THE HAMILTON VENTURA

THE OFFICIAL TIMEPIECE OF THE GALAXY

The iconic Hamilton Ventura watch has had roles on the big screen since the 1950’s some big, Elvis Presley wore the Ventura in 1961 in the musical comedy Blue Hawaii and some small yet for the last two decades most fans will recall that the Ventura has been the watch of choice for the Men in Black alongside the standard ray-bans’ neuralyzer and black suits.

34 LUXURY LIVING

Its pioneering shield shaped celebration of Mid-Century Modern design is perfectly suited for the intergalactic law enforcement. For one thing, its combination of polished steel case and black leather strap complements the MIB’s monochrome colour scheme and for another, its unique triangular case and starburst dial is as much a product of the space age as the fictional earth-protecting agency itself and it is because of this daring, pioneering and unconventional design that the Ventura has been the sci-fi watch of choice also appearing in several other sci-fi films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Independence and Interstellar.

35

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Originally launches in 1957 the Ventura was the brainchild of designer Richard Arbib and made watchmaking history as the world’s first electrical, battery powered watch. The Second World War was over and the world was looking to the future to the skies and space. Initially offered in only 14K yellow gold with either a black or a silver dial, Hamilton charged US$200, for this model, and an additional US$100, if you wanted six diamonds as hour markers. Later on, Hamilton also introduced a 14K white gold version. In 1963 Hamilton stopped production of Ventura, whilst its design had captured the mood and aesthetic of the period the electric movement had become obsolete, but thanks to its cult fan base in 1988 the Ventura was re-launched with a more modern updated quartz movement. Today this handsome timepiece which features in Agent M in the new Men in Black: International, is characterized by an open silver dial, nickelled hour and minute hands with Super-Luminova, red seconds’ hand, sapphire crystal, and a textured brown calf leather strap with a folding clasp. On the inside, the watch boasts an H-10 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve, as well as water resistance of up to 50 meters.

When a customer walks into a jewellery store, weddings or

special occasions are usually at the forefront of our minds. Rarely does that customer think of where the jewellery

comes from, let alone its social and environmental costs. The tragedy of “blood diamonds” – illegally traded diamonds

used to fund conflicts in Africa – has managed to permeate consumer consciousness and generate change, yet most consumers have little idea of where their gold jewellery comes from or how it’s produced.

For the uninitiated amongst us the extraction of gold is an

extremely harmful process to people and the environment. Twenty million people worldwide work in the artisanal min-

ing industry and one hundred million are indirectly involved in the supply chain. 90% of the work is manual and often

undertaken without technical aids. Gold miners are exposed

to toxic chemicals such as mercury, which are commonly used in the extraction process. Not only does this harm the

amount in circulation, in fact more than enough to sustain steer away from utilizing this already sourced gold but by recycling gold the impact on the environment would dramatically reduce. Of course hundreds of people within these

mining communities rely heavily on sourcing gold for their livelihoods regardless of there working conditions so closing all the mines would of course have an adverse effect so

Louis Vuitton products have become staple in every fashionista’s wardrobe.

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

Designer, entrepreneur Louis Vuitton was born on August 4, 1821, in Anchay, a small hamlet in eastern France’s mountainous, Jura region. Son of a farmer and milliner, Louis knew from a young age that he wanted more from life then just to struggle to makes end meet. Sadly Louis, mother passed away when he was only 10 years old, and his father remarried, legend has it Louis, new stepmother was as severe and wicked as any stepmother depicted by Disney and as a stubborn and headstrong child, antagonized by his stepmother and bored by the provincial life in Anchay, Louis resolved to run away for the bustling bright lights of the capital to Paris. At the age of 13, Louis left home alone and on foot, headed off on his 292 mile trek to Paris. He traveled for more than two years, taking odd jobs to feed himself along the way and staying wherever he could find shelter. He arrived in Paris in 1837, after just celebrating his 16th birthday. At this time Paris was engulfed in an industrial revolution that had produced a litany of contradictions: aweinspiring grandeur and abject poverty, rapid growth and devastating epidemics. The teenage Louis was overwhelmed yet inspired and soon gained employment as an apprentice in the workshop of a successful box-maker and packer named Monsieur Marechal. In 19th-century Europe, box-making and packing was a highly respectable craft, and after several years of training Louis had gained a reputation amongst the Paris more fashionable as one of the city’s premier practitioners.

48 LUXURY LIVING

In 1851 when Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte staged a, coups d’état which lead to his assumption to the Emperor of the French proved very profitable for young Louis as Napoleon III’s wife, the Empress of France, Eugenie de Montijo, a Spanish countess hired Louis as her personal box-maker and packer and charged him with looking after her beautiful clothes and garments which provided Louis with a gateway to mix with the elite and royalty. Shortly after the young Louis met and married a 17-yearold beauty named Clemence-Emilie Parriaux and a few months after his marriage, he left Monsieur Marechal’s shop and opened his own box-making and packing workshop in Paris. The sign outside the shop read: “Securely packs the most fragile objects. Specializing in packing fashions.” Four years after opening his own shop, Louis had designed and produced an entirely new trunk. Instead of leather, it was made of a grey canvas that was lighter, more durable, and more impervious to water and odours. More importantly, unlike previous trunks, which were dome-shaped, Louis’s trunks were rectangular making them stackable and far more convenient for shipping via the railroad and steamship. Louis’s trunk revolutionised luggage and were documented as “the birth of modern luggage”.

The trunks proved an immediate commercial success, with advances in transportation and the expansion of travel this placed an increasing demand for Louis’s trunks and in 1859, to fulfil the requests placed for his luggage, he expanded into a larger workshop in Asnieres, a village outside Paris, however, due to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent siege of Paris business was suspended. When the siege finally ended on January 1871, Louis returned to Asnieres to find the village in ruins, his staff dispersed, his equipment stolen, and his shop destroyed. Showing the same stubborn, can-do spirit he displayed all those years ago walking almost 300 miles alone at the age of 13, Louis immediately devoted himself to the restoration of his business and within months he had built a new shop at a new address, 1 Rue Scribe. This new shop was centred in the heart of New Paris, and was home to the prestigious Jockey Club and had a decidedly more aristocratic feel than Louis’s previous location in Asnieres so a new focus on luxury was adapted. The following year, Louis introduced a new trunk design featuring beige canvas and red stripes, this simple, yet luxurious, new design appealed to Paris’s new elite and marked the beginning of the Louis Vuitton label’s modern incarnation as a luxury brand. Soon thereafter, due to the continuing imitation of his look, in 1888, Louis created the Damier Canvas pattern, which bore a logo that reads “marque L. Vuitton déposée”, which translates into “L. Vuitton registered trademark”

For 20 years, Louis’s Vuitton continued to operate out of 1 Rue Scribe, innovating high-quality, luxury luggage, until he died on February 27, 1892, at the age of 70, but the Louis Vuitton line did not die with its eponymous founder. Under the direction of his son Georges Vuitton, the company began a campaign to build the company into a worldwide corporation, exhibiting the company’s products around the world launching the signature Monogram Canvas under a worldwide patent. Its graphic symbols, including quatrefoils and flowers (as well as the LV monogram), were based on the trend of using Japanese and Oriental designs of the late Victorian era. Under the guise of George Vuitton the Louis Vuitton Company introduced the Steamer Bag, a smaller piece of luggage designed to be kept inside Vuitton luggage trunks, the Keepall Bag, the Noé Bag made for champagne vintners to transport bottles and the Speedy Bag. In 1936 Georges Vuitton died, and his son, GastonLouis Vuitton, assumed control of the company and in 1966, the Papillon was launched (a cylindrical bag that is still popular today). In 1987 Louis Vuitton merged with Moët Hennessy a company formed in 1987 after the merger of prestigious cognac makers Hennessy and champagne producers Moët & Chandon and became LVMH Moët Hennessy, better known as LVMH. Over the coming years Louis Vuitton has introduced, the Tambour watch collection, the new Monogram Multicolore canvas range of handbags and accessories, the Speedy watch collection & the Damier Graphite canvas and has inaugurated stores in New York City, São Paulo, Mexico City, Cancun and Johannesburg, Shanghai, Champs-Élysées store in Paris and in 2010, Louis Vuitton opened what it described as their most luxurious store in London. With stores in every continent it is little wonder that Louis Vuitton is regarded as the most prestigious brand globally and is loved and adorned by stars and A-list celebrities alike who, even today with our fast paced methods of travel mirror that of the Paris elite of 1854 will not be seen dead travelling without there LV luggage

A Christie’s Expert on the Value of

LOUIS VUITTON LUGGAGE In 1858 Louis Vuitton designed a flat-topped trunk that could be stacked - a radical innovation as trunks previously featured curved lids. Today, the brand boasts one of the world’s most exceptional collections of antique trunks, many of which are displayed in its stores around the world.

A rare aluminum Explorer trunk by Louis Vuitton, dating from 1892, realized £162,500 ($203,125), from an estimate of £50,000-£100,000 ($62,800-$125,600), in London on December 12 2018. The market for rare and unusual Louis Vuitton trunks achieved a peak last year when Christie’s set a world record for a trunk at auction with the sale of the aluminium Explorer trunk. The Explorer trunks were produced in zinc, copper, and brass throughout the 1890s, but aluminium models were by far the most luxurious. Aluminium is today relatively inexpensive due to its abundance, but affordable mass production methods were not developed until the 1920s. When this trunk was made, aluminium was considered a very precious metal in France. Napoleon III had a tableware service made from the metal, and for a period aluminium was even worth more than gold. Louis Vuitton’s early adoption of new materials and technologies helped assert his dominance in the travel trunk market. Vuitton was a genius inventor, filing patents for special hinges and clasps, and exhibiting his radical innovations at world fairs. 52 LUXURY LIVING

A Monogram Canvas Desk Trunk by Louis Vuitton from the 1920s, offered in the Handbags & Accessories sale, London, June 11, 2019

Season after season the market for rare travel trunks from the historic house increases. This season on June 11 2019 Christie’s offered 10 rare examples, including a Monogram Canvas Desk Trunk. When closed, the secrets are hidden within, but on opening this special piece, the trunk is transformed into a functional piece of furniture. Our advice to collectors is to utilize these historical artefacts as design items. A shirt trunk makes for an interesting table and a wardrobe steamer makes a centrepiece. The strength of the Louis Vuitton brand lies in its ability to constantly reinvent classic models and look to its archive for inspiration. Some models have been produced for over 100 years, while new styles incorporate traditional models and motifs to show the evolution of the brand. As technology and social media have amplified Vuitton’s reach, the lines between art, fashion, and street culture have become blurred. The trunkmaker for European aristocracy now collaborates with the hip skateboard brand Supreme, a mainstay of New York City streetwear and one of the most coveted brands in the world.

The latest Supreme X Louis Vuitton trunk is the perfect blend of New York’s street style and French savoir faire. The first partnership between Louis Vuitton and Supreme was launched in 2017 in selected pop-up shops-with the ensuing popularity resulting in stocks running out faster than anticipated. The collaboration continues to be of great interest at auction with a limited edition red and white Monogram Malle Courrier 90 Trunk with Silver Hardware by Supreme with Louis Vuitton selling for HK$1,375,000 ($175,935) in May 2019. JAEGER-LECOULTRE PRESENTS THE DAZZLING

DAZZLING RENDEZ-VOUS MOON TIMEPIECE FULLY LOADED WITH OVER 108 DIAMONDS Jaeger-Le Coultre’s continues to extend its Rendez-Vous collection with a gem setting showpiece

Throughout history, watchmakers have explored astronomical phenomena, harnessing their technical skills to express the movements of the moon and stars in mechanical form. Indeed, the origins of time measurement itself lie in mankind’s ability to understand the rhythm of the cosmos. For Jaeger-LeCoultre, the moon and stars have a special resonance, due to the exceptional clarity of the night sky above its home in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux, and this year its watchmakers and artistic craftsmen return to the celestial theme. To coincide with the 76th Venice International Film Festival – La Biennale di Venezia, La Grande Maison presents a dazzling new interpretation of that most beloved of astronomical complications, the moon phase.

55

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

DAZZLING RENDEZ-VOUS MOON The moon: Luna. Symbol of romance and femininity. The source of nature’s ebb and flow, the cycle of the seasons, and inspiration for artists and poets. The closest heavenly body to Earth, yet still so enigmatic. Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon pays tribute to feminine strength and beauty, presenting La Grande Maison’s emblematic moon phase function in a magnificent new setting. Echoing the serene beauty of the night sky, the icy sparkle of diamonds is warmed by pink gold and complemented by glowing white mother of pearl. This new, fully gem-set interpretation of Dazzling Rendez-Vous follows the launch of Dazzling RendezVous Night & Day (in white gold or pink gold) and Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon (in white gold) at SIHH in January this year, followed by the rubyset Dazzling Rendez-Vous Red, on the occasion of Shanghai International Film Festival in June.

u The Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon bezel comprises 108 diamonds, forming two concentric rings around the watch case. There’s an airy quality to these glittering circles, thanks to the claw (or ‘griffes’) setting of the outer ring of 36 stones. A classical jewellery technique – indeed, it was employed by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s craftsmen for Model 101, the celebrated High Jewellery design of the 1920s – it requires great precision. Designed to maximise the presence of each stone, the setting allows light to pass through the diamonds from every angle, while minimising the visible metal. In Dazzling Rendez-Vous the fine gold claws hold the diamonds high, giving an impression that they’re almost floating around the watch case, rather than anchored to it. To complete the case, diamonds are also set into the lugs and the winding crown. The sumptuous, fully-set bracelet is a masterpiece of the jewellery crafts: Jaeger-LeCoultre’s gem-setters have bezel-set 310 diamonds (22.27 carats), linking them seamlessly together to form a river of diamonds that wraps around the wrist as softly as a ribbon.

56 LUXURY LIVING

The moonlight-white mother-of-pearl dial abounds with subtle details: on an outer ring, mirror-polished golden spheres mark the hours; on the main hours ring, each of the applied pink gold numerals is set on a separate mother-of-pearl ‘tile’, all anchored by an inner circle of 47 diamonds. It is a perfect setting for a romantic and lovely moon phase display. Visible through an opening at 6 o’clock, the new design features a shiny mother-of-pearl moon floating against a starry aventurine night sky, and playing hide-and-seek behind a cloud of carved mother-of-pearl as it cycles through its different phases over the course of a month. Uniting La Grande Maison’s artistic skills with its renowned technical acumen, the Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon is powered by the Calibre 925/A1 – a self-winding mechanical movement developed and produced in-house and providing a power reserve of 38 hours. The transparent sapphire case-back reveals some fine decoration and finishing in the classical style: blued screws, circular graining, Côtes de Genève and the pink gold signature winding rotor with Côtes de Genève decoration. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Dazzling Rendez-Vous Moon is a fitting tribute to the beauty of the night sky. Price start from €230,000 57

PANAMA

A twin-centre trip combining the architectural wonders and rich heritage of Panama City: an engaging, cosmopolitan metropolis rich with old-world charm, where skyscrapers and a buzzing nightlife scene rub shoulders with Colonial-era landmarks and charming cobbled streets Paired with unique expedition to a true ocean wilderness on Panama’s Pacific Coast: Islas Secas – relaunching December 2019 – for a thrilling marine adventure that is also pioneering the country’s sustainability efforts.

70 LUXURY LIVING

Panama is perhaps one of the most interesting, yet undiscovered Central American

travel destinations, with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. Its strategic location on the bridge that connects Central and South America

makes it one of the most important shipping routes in the world – until now, highly regarded predominantly by business travellers.

This is set to change. A place of growing global intrigue quickly rising on holiday-

makers’ travel wish lists, sitting at the crossroads of two oceans and two continents, Panama is a narrow country packed with culture, tropical beaches, history, wildlife, and wild exploration for travellers seeking an adventurous holiday. With the Panama

Canal historically hailed as one of the most famous feats of human engineering, and the lesser-trodden wild Pacific Coast awaiting exploration, Panama offers a

captivating combination of rich colonial history, architecture and a thriving food scene, with breathtakingly beautiful rugged seascapes unlocking access to an

entire archipelago of volcanic islands. Here are two of the country’s most exciting destinations to showcase the best of the ‘land’ and ‘sea’

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

BY SEA THE GULF OF CHIRIQUÍ Offering endless marine adventure opportunities, an untouched, wild island landscape, ancient archaeology discoveries and access to Pacific surf breaks that rival Costa Rica – Staying at: Islas Secas

A few hours west of the city, the Gulf of Chiriquí lies along Panama’s

Pacific coast, extending from the Costa Rican border to the west to the Azuero Peninsula on the east. The region is home to one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific, one of the region’s richest mangrove forests and incredibly bio-diverse ecosystems. It has

beautiful beaches and two vast, protected marine parks. In nearby waters, Islas Secas – which will relaunch as a full-service resort in December 2019 – unlocks access to an archipelago of 14 volcanic

islands. With exceptional marine wildlife, thousands of species of

wild fauna and flora and a little-touched, wonderfully rugged setting, this is one of Central America’s best kept secrets, far less explored than its Caribbean cousin.

There are four individually-designed Casita sites, sleeping up to just 18 guests on one of the islands. Islas Secas is also powered by

and in harmony with its surrounding environment: 100% of energy is solar-generated; 100% of food waste is recycled; 100% of waste

water is re-used for irrigation; and 75% of the archipelago has been

left untouched. The experiences offered are wide and varied, with everything from world-class fishing to diving, snorkelling, seasonal whale watching, naturalist tours, private beach picnics, wake and paddle boarding and sea bobbing. The 20 miles between Islas Secas

and the coast of mainland Panama allow endless scope to roam

fish-storied waters, creating a ‘marine playground’ for its guests. The

sea life that calls these temperate waters home includes parrotfish, angelfish, blue tang and eagle rays; humpback whales, hammerhead sharks and dolphins; and even the critically endangered Green Olive

Ridley and Loggerhead sea turtles. For travellers with more of a thirst for adventure, it is also a year-round surfers’ mecca with an fantastic

combination of beach breaks, reef breaks and point breaks. Visitors

can ride waves on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on the same day thanks to Panama’s narrow geography. Thirty minutes by boat

from Islas Secas transports guests to Isla Silva de Afuera, where it is said the surf is better than in Costa Rica, and Islas Montuosa lies a little over an hour away with consistent deep-water waves reaching up to 25 feet on big swells.

BY LAND PANAMA CITY A union of history and modernity, where skyscrapers, casinos and nightclubs mingle with colonial buildings in the Casco Viejo and the rainforest

of the Natural Metropolitan Park – Staying at: American Trade Hotel

The most cosmopolitan capital in Central America, Panama City is both a buzzing metropolis and

the gateway to further-flung tropical escapes. The optimally located American Trade Hotel provides the ideal base to explore the city, combining old

world elegance with contemporary, local design. It is positioned in the very desirable Casco Viejo

neighbourhood – a UNESCO World Heritage site

– offering the best sightseeing, dining and nightlife.

The property occupies a beautifully restored building standing at the ecological and cultural crossroads of

the Americas, deeply connected to both the historic

Old Quarter and the blossoming new Panama City. With colourful colonial mansions, art galleries and a prospering culinary scene, Casco Viejo is one of the few areas where it is possible to just wander

the narrow cobblestone streets and stumble across a number of interesting sites – the Metropolitan

Cathedral, scenic churches, plazas and some of the most significant Spanish architectural landmarks

of Panama. There is also the Interoceanic Canal Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of

the construction of the Panama Canal. A collection

of objects and materials reveal the technology and operation of this engineering marvel that is

acclaimed as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’. Another must-visit is Chef Mario Castrellon’s Maito restaurant – a pioneer of a ‘new wave’ of

Panamanian cuisine with a modern vision – where Afro-Antillean, Creole and Asian influences create a unique dining experience that perfectly captures Panama’s multicultural gastronomic identity.

78 LUXURY LIVING

Pushing the boundaries of cruise ship design, Kelly Hoppen MBE and visionary architect Tom Wright have mastered the fresh, exciting, current and comfortable essence that defines Celebrity’s modern luxury style. American interior designer Nate Berkus, served as Celebrity Edge’s design ambassador and voice to help deliver the messaging on the design excellence of the ship. Kelly Hoppen’s design philosophy and neutral palette seen throughout the ship is layered with small punchy accents of bright colours which blends perfectly with the ships moving deck or “magic carpet” the world’s first cantilevered deck that can move up and down the ship’s exterior which stands out because of its striking orange visage. As one would expect Hoppen’s beautifully designed suites have a timeless and classic feel and exude a modern elegance and harmonious feel. Two Iconic Suites situated above the ship’s bridge which span over 2,600 sq. ft. boast two-bedrooms, two-bathrooms and mind-blowing views thanks to panoramic windows that envelop their dining room, living room and bedrooms. The 700 sq. ft. veranda offers a 270-degree view of the ocean. Another new Suite Class comprises of six split-level Edge Villas, which offer stunning views from two stories of windows, private plunge pools and direct walk-out access to The Retreat Sundeck. All suites and double occupancy Edge Staterooms are fitted with plush king-sized cashmere mattresses – an industry first. The Duplex, otherwise known as the Edge Villa, possesses a unique design feel and boasts double height and an outdoor plunge pool. The beauty of it is in its glass box which offers full views of the ocean, whilst feeling like you could be in your own apartment. The Duplex could transfer you to London, Miami, Hong Kong and so many other key cities - yet it is a view that is incomparable. It is the Edge of EDGE. The Penthouse’s carefree and relaxed interiors will remind you of Santorini, Greece. The beautiful crisp blues and sculptural lighting, specifically created for the ship, compliment the stunning pieces of art and accessories that have been handpicked and selected for the space. An extraordinary trunk, for example, which was found on Kelly’s travels, brings a personal touch to the penthouse. Abundant textures are layered to create an ultra-luxurious feel and an extraordinary bathroom suite will allow you to truly relax. Within the communal areas the pods of the Luminae Restaurant create a city feel and the organic blossom lights that unfold above the tables open up the space. There is nothing but light in the space, reflecting all of the different finishes beautifully including the marble inlays at the entrance. Bespoke curated art works which have been hand selected for the restaurant and wood panelling gives it warmth. 80 LUXURY LIVING

The Suite Sundeck is a place that you can sit and eat late into the night. Unlike so many sundecks that close in the early hours, the atmospheric music of the Suite Sundeck lets you enjoy the undisturbed views of the night ocean. The world is truly at your feet here, with beautifully designed furniture and interior design that rounds off the experience. Celebrity Edge offers incredible facilities including an exceptional Spa that showcases organic marble wood that will automatically makes you feel relaxed and serene. “The concept of designing individual rooms on the sea was irresistible,” said Hoppen. “We were inspired by the notion that it is possible to sail away from the demands of modern living, and retreat to a breath-taking space with an endlessly changing view. It was exciting to explore the precise balance between the excitement of travel and the comfort of a luxurious personal space.” Recently named the best new cruise ship of 2018, Celebrity Edge is one of the most exciting, innovative and transformational ships of this generation 81

In our busy, hectic world, who doesn’t yearn to escape from the pressures of life, of meeting expectations, of just not having enough time to do the things that really matter? Who doesn’t sometimes dream of escaping the stresses of the everyday world for a remote tropical

island where it seems time finally stands still? The Nau-

tilus, a privately-owned island in the Maldives, answers those questions.

Opened earlier this year in January, The Nautilus is a celebration of the individual spirit, a vision of a Mal-

divian entrepreneur it is inspired by the enduring form of the nautilus shell. Originally a deserted island – too

small at 250m diameter for inhabitation – the tiny island is home to one of the world’s most luxurious re-

sorts. Surrounded by serene and sparkling seas, this

Maldivian luxury hotel is a natural haven of wellness, each of the 26 houses and residences are unique and

sophisticated in design. Curved lines and spiralled ele-

ments echo throughout, while hand-picked decor creates a calm and laid-back atmosphere. Each residences also comes complete with its own private pool.

But how is this island different? In keeping with its new

bohemian style, The Nautilus doesn’t judge, doesn’t impose and doesn’t inhibit its guests. Restaurants have a

flexible approach to opening hours and food. Menus are

considered only a starting point for discussions about what the guest would like to eat and the chef can cook favourite recipes or create specialities as desired. Guests can enjoy gourmet treats from the poolside deli all day

long without charge, and each guest’s house is stocked with complimentary teas, coffee, water and a selection

of soft drinks. Breakfast is whenever the guest feels like eating and doesn’t have to be in the restaurant. Blissful spa treatments can take place without appointment.

Pleasingly for a leading luxury resort, there are no dress

codes and going barefoot is encouraged – even in the restaurants. Dine at the signature fine dining spot, Zaytoun, for Mediterranean and Arabic cuisine; try smoked specialties at globally inspired grill, Ocaso; tuck into

casual gourmet bites at laid-back beach house, Thyme; and pair cocktails with tapas at the poolside bar, Naiboli. Breakfast can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere; canapes are served by the pool all day; and you can see the sun go down each day with a cocktail.

With its privileged position in the Unesco Biosphere Reserve, Baa Atoll, the island is

a gateway to a kaleidoscope of marine life, too, with diving trips to mesmerizing coral

reefs and cruises on the custom-built yacht where guests are taken to swim with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay and explore the atoll’s remote sandbanks, most of all, the island

can conjure up tailored activities that are meaningful to each guest, leaving them feeling as though they’ve had more than just a beach holiday. The Nautilus will craft excursions

and adventures, taking guests where they want to be when they want to be there, from midnight swims in glowing phosphorescent waters alongside a marine biologist, to ex-

ploring deserted islands on its custom-built yacht or floating in a ‘star filled’ pool under the milky way while the House Captain whisks up another perfect cocktail.

Back on the island, guests can unwind at the resort’s spa taking part in daily yoga, meditation and fitness classes. The Nautilus sets guests on their own path to wellness, draw-

ing on ancient wisdoms and modern innovations for a transformative journey in its four

treatment rooms in the heart of the island. The spa specialises in the bespoke, designing wellness programmes and daily rituals that refresh and relax, pamper and protect.

On the quiet, unrushed shores of The Nautilus, is a place where - on its island at least time becomes an irrelevance.

COOKSON ADVENTURES PROVES LUXURY TRAVEL EXPERIENCES

Luxury travel specialist Cookson Adventures contributes to pioneering research into rare species of killer whale as part of its Antarctic Peninsula Adventure 106 LUXURY LIVING

108 LUXURY LIVING

A team of scientists’ ground-breaking research into a new type of killer whale has been made possible by Cookson Adventures. The luxury travel company coordinated for their guest to solely fund this project as part of their adventure to the Antarctic Peninsula. Aboard the research vessel, the guest was able to spend time with the orca researchers and view firsthand the rare footage of the type D orcas. After a week lying at anchor off the coast of southern Chile, the team of scientists finally took advantage of a break in stormy weather to embark on this historic research cruise. Led by whale scientist Dr. Robert Pitman, a group of killer whale experts has set sail from Ushuaia, Argentina, to collect evidence of a new species of killer whale living in the Southern Ocean. This journey of discovery has been brought to life via an anonymous donor through Cookson Adventures, a luxury experiential travel company. The project has been almost 15 years in the making, with Dr. Pitman vying to gather specific data since 2005, when he was shown photos of ‘strange-looking’ killer whales at a workshop in Seattle, Washington. The whales, which had a more rounded head, a longer, pointier dorsal fin, and a tiny white eye patch that was much smaller than that of ‘regular’ killer whales, had been sighted as far back as 1955, when a group of similar whales was stranded on the coast of Paraparaumu, New Zealand.

109

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

In 2010, after years of research and data collection – and six further sightings of the whales – Dr. Pitman and colleagues published a paper in the scientific journal Polar Biology describing this new type of killer whale. Since then, a dedicated effort to distinguish the Type D has been impossible due to lack of funding and the difficulty of navigating the Southern Ocean, where some of the world’s most tempestuous seas can be found in the notoriously-named latitudes of the ‘Roaring 40s’ and the ‘Furious 50s’. But support from an anonymous donor through Cookson Adventures has finally launched the project, in collaboration with the Centro de Conservación Cetacea, Chile. Thanks to this generous donation from the Cookson Adventures client, the team has chartered the dedicated research vessel, Australis, and set sail. It has now collected skin samples (tiny, pencil erasersized bits of skin harmlessly taken with a crossbow dart), the study of which will confirm the whales’ genetic distinction from other species. Tagging of individual whales will also provide the team with data on movement patterns and diving capabilities. Unravelling the secrets of Type D killer whales, one of the least known large animals left on the planet, now moves from the blustery Southern Ocean to the lab. Dr. Robert Pitman said, “These samples hold the key to determining whether Type D represents a distinct species of killer whale.” Henry Cookson, who founded Cookson Adventures following a 2007 expedition to Antarctica added, “Given a life-long passion for the Antarctic Continent, wildlife and conservation, we are proud to be in a position to assist with getting this long-awaited project off the ground. Our guests at Cookson Adventures are passionate about conservation and often eager to meaningfully contribution to the preservation of the places they are privileged to visit. It is at the core of the Cookson Adventures ethos to support worthwhile causes the world over, and this is an incredible opportunity to be part of truly pioneering research.” Cookson Adventures has put conservation at the heart of its experiences for many years and been the catalyst for its clientele, some of the world’s most influential and successful people, donating millions of pounds to worthwhile causes over the years. From crucial work carried out in the Galápagos Islands, rehoming 250 juvenile tortoises in locations they have been absent from for over 200 years, to funding rhino rehabilitation in one of Kenya’s most important conservancies, its clients engage in philanthropic activities across the globe.

110 LUXURY LIVING

The scientific party of this latest conservation effort is comprised of a team of world-leading experts in a range of disciplines, including whale acoustics, bioecology, marine research, tagging and surveying. It is led by Dr Robert Pitman (USA), a marine ecologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), whose expertise spans 40 years, working in each of the world’s oceans. Supporting him is Lisa Ballance (USA), Director of the NOAA Marine Mammal and Turtle Research Division with a special interest in species diversity patterns, John Totterdell (Australia), a killer whale researcher and the Founder of the Western Australia Cetacean Research Centre, Jared Towers (Canada), who manages the Killer Whale population monitoring programmes for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), and bioacoustician Bec Wellard (Australia), who has recently completed a PhD in killer whales at Curtin University, Western Australia. Mariano Sironi, from Argentina, completes the team as the local collaborator and an expert in right whales. LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Regarded as one of the preeminent rock musicians of our time, Lenny Kravitz transcends genre, style, race and class. Never one to be pigeon holed into one simply genre he has spent much of his career proving he can play any instrument or musical style, his music fuses elements of rock, blues, soul, R&B, funk, jazz, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, pop, folk, and ballads and has in the past been touted as either not “black enough” or “white enough” it is this nonconformity that has resulted in his services being demanded from the likes of Madonna to Jay-Z. Kravitz’s grew up surrounded by music, the only child of actress Roxie Roker, and NBC producer father Sy who was also a jazz promoter who circulated with many jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Short, Miles Davis, Ellington even played “Happy Birthday” for him one year when he was about 5. A huge fan of the Jackson 5 it was not until Kravitz moved to Los Angeles with his mother aged 11 that he discover the whole rock’ n’ roll Dogtown skateboarding scene listening to Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen and of course Hendrix. Dreaming of becoming a session musician Kravitz who could already play the drum, piano, guitar and bass was often discarded by record labels because his music was neither commercially “black enough” or “white enough” so Kravitz recorded an album under his own steam.

His début album Let Love Rule in 1989, a combination of rock and funk with a 1960s vibe received mixed reviews some critics felt Kravitz was a gifted new artist, others felt he was overpowered by his musical influences and whilst the album gained moderate success in the United States it became an instant hit in Europe. He followed this up producing the song “Justify My Love” for Madonna, an album for Vanessa Paradis, and his own smash hits with ‘It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over’ and ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’. More success followed in 2008 with ‘It Is Time for a Love Revolution’ and in 2015 he appeared alongside Katy Perry at the Super Bowl halftime.

116 LUXURY LIVING

Looking to other arts Kravitz has also appeared in big screen movie “The Hunger Games’ and ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, but it is his love behind the camera that has also captured the imagination. Reflecting on his childhood where his father who working for NBC covered the Vietnam War he was presented with a Leica camera as a gift, Kravitz quickly discovered his love for photography and later, as a star, he became friends with photographers such as Mark Seliger and Jean-Baptiste Mondino. “I would go into their darkroom or studio and watch them work. I thought it was magical.” His hobby soon turned into something more professional and in true Kravitz style he one day turned the tables and pulled out his camera on the red carpet of those aiming cameras at him - his photos were really well received resulting in the release of a book and an exhibition called Flash. A collaboration with Leica , the camera titled the “Correspondent” was made to look as if it had been used for 20 years, complete with traces of wear and tear was designed in memory of Kravitz’s father. Last year Kravitz was appointed the first ever Global Creative Director for Dom Perignon releasing a set of black-and-white photographs of a star packed intimate dinner party hosted at Kravitz’s home in Los Angeles which he also incidentally designed. The photos were taken using his Leica Monochrom camera of course and feature his daughter Zoë Kravitz, designer Alexander Wang, actors Harvey Keitel and Susan Sarandon, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, soccer legend Hidetoshi Nakata, and model Abbey Lee Kershaw. The photos titled “Assemblage” featured in an advertising campaign spanning three continent. Kravitz has also designed as part of his Kravitz Design Inc. design company (did we fail to mention this!) a limited edition homeware capsule collection of a limited edition bottle for the brand featuring a hammered gold on the label, a box for the magnum version that becomes a candelabrum, and an extraordinary table à champagne that pulls apart to reveal illuminated bottles of Dom Pérignon, glasses, coasters and an ice bucket at the centre. So what next for Kravitz? Well looking through his CV it seems striking that for a man who looks like he has stepped off of the cover of a magazine has never ventured into fashion. Only time will tell one things for sure what ever Kravitz does next it will indeed be unique

HAS THE WORD LUXURY BECOME

UNDESIRABLE?

120 LUXURY LIVING

It is no coincidence that one of the favoured gathering spots of France’s yellow jackets, “gilets jaunes” protesters is the Champs-Élysées - after all, it’s where the icons of globalised luxury are on display, and with them, the everwidening gap between the haves and have-nots in our society Today, luxury is both a market and a major social phenomenon. As such, the players within it need to be aware that the meaning of the word luxury has escaped their grasp and as such has taken on a negative social connotation, raising questions over its very use. A survey of the websites of major brands and groups indicates that many no longer use the term luxury, preferring instead to highlight its fundamentals. For the major players in a sector to ensure its long-term viability, they need to ensure its social acceptability. Yet at this moment, powerful movements, campaigns and signals are emerging all over the world that highlights social and economic inequality. While luxury brands and goods are not the cause, they are the visible manifestation of a gap.

u In China itself, set to become the leading luxury market, President Xi Jinping placed high-end brands and their customers under observation two years ago. His stated concern was preserving social harmony, which is an important concept in Chinese culture. In general, the emerging worldwide demand for more sustainable development is not limited just too environmental aspects but encompasses this necessary social harmony that luxury goods can upset. In this context, not only does the word luxury no longer serve commercial interests because of the lack of differentiation between brands, but also the concepts signified by this word are becoming less socially acceptable. Might the only way to continue creating luxury goods and experiences be to no longer call them by that name?

121

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

LUXURY FRAGMENTATION While luxury is experiencing worldwide success, it is also facing an existential crisis: the term luxury is now compromised by the large number of brands and companies around the world who want to

position themselves in customers’ minds under its umbrella, without really being it. In other words, the term has become clichéd and the concept diluted by brands that are merely expensive, without

offering true quality or unique savoir-faire. To differentiate themselves and capture the fleeting spirit of the times, these brands have fragmented the concept of luxury, resulting in the fanciful terms such as “accessible” luxury, “modern” luxury, “jet set” luxury and “casual” luxury.

Ironically, the success of luxury has drawn in its wake all kinds of players who are bewitched by the sector’s growth and margins, but with no intention of meeting its prerequisites. It is also true that the high EBITDA multiples (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) used to determine the financial valuation of brands in the luxury sector are an additional incentive to them.

Even worse, the concepts that are signified when referenced by the word luxury are no longer the stuff of dreams. In this age of social media and selfies, it is not surprising to observe that the visible or even flashy face of luxury has been privileged by customers with limited interest in the brands’ original values and high quality than they are in the social status projected by conspicuous consumption.

But they should not be criticised for this. Such customers are young, ambitious and keen to take their

place at the global banquet table, and also ensure the growth and profitability of the luxury sector. Thanks to their purchasing power and desire to gain respectability and status, these newcomers have produced and will ensure the steady growth of the sector and its brands.

Corruption has also dented the image of luxury through association with the suspicious enrichment

of customers who are proud of their success and make money from their power. That is why in China

the term that has been used up to now to denote luxury, she shi, is being dropped by the brands and their customers themselves, in favour of a return to the meaning of exceptional goods.

122 LUXURY LIVING

BACK TO THE ESSENTIALS It is no surprise that, in this context, the real luxury players are distancing themselves from the term, which has taken on meanings that are far from its essential values. The dilemma is to stand out in a

sector that is constantly attracting new competitors that dilute the concept as they enter the market. The solution is to re-establish and update the essential signifiers and differentiators of luxury: masterly expertise and a rich heritage, firmly rooting in modernity.

But it is not because the term luxury is no longer acceptable that flaunting one’s social difference has

become totally passé. Luxury is a dual source of value: for oneself and for those around us. Therein lies the dilemma: luxury continues to act as a mood enhancer in today’s society, and its shameless flaunting is well and truly present. At the same time, snobbery must become more subtle. manship of one of rock’s most flamboyant and accomplished acts. A rhapsody of jewels

and precious metals pays loving tribute to the band and the album that propelled them to global stardom. High-fidelity recreations of iconic regalia fuse together in a piece brimming with royal pomp and rock excess.

band’s exuberance and the cover art of its first platinum-selling album shine through in every detail of an object of ultimate craft.

Popular acclaim for Queen is at its highest level in decades. Freddie Mercury’s personality, story and star power resonate strongly in the current cultural climate.

Fashioned to resemble Britain’s royal coat of arms, Queen’s iconic crest logo was designed by art-school graduate Freddie Mercury before his band had even released its

first album. Beneath the wings of a phoenix, the figures of two lions, a crab and two fairies represent the bandmembers’ zodiac signs arranged around a royal crown encircled by the letter Q. Lost wax casting recreates the cover art of Queen’s breakthrough album in painstaking detail in an objet d’art fit for rock royalty.

One of the most elaborate pieces of music memorabilia ever created bears all the hallmarks of rock royalty. God save the Queen! Prices start from €4,150.00

134 LUXURY LIVING

Frieze, the biggest contemporary art fair in the world returns to London yet again this October with a programme which seeks to ‘embody the exceptional international spirit of London’. 135

Frieze is like no other art event in the world. It’s a place to see and be seen at with scholars, connoisseurs, dealers and big-time collectors intermingling with A-list actors, models and It girls.

This year’s edition of Frieze London is its most international to date, with more than 160 galleries

from 36 countries -up from last year’s 30 - which given the current climate and “Brexit” looming is rather remarkable. Among them there has been an upturn in the number of participating galleries from; South-East Asia and Latin America.

This year Frieze welcomes a new themed section entitled Woven, which will focus on contemporary textile practices that incorporate traditional craft techniques. Cosmin Costinas, writer, critic and Executive Director/Curator of Para Site (Hong Kong) curates this show featuring solo presentations by eight international artists.

Frieze Sculptures opened for its third year in Regents Park back in July showcasing 23 international artists. Female artists feature heavily in this free installation, including the Pakistani-born Huma

Bhabha, whose work, according to Clare Lilley, the director of programme at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, hand-picked each artist for Frieze Sculpture “takes human actions to the very edge of plausibility and acceptability”; and the Scottish-born Turner Prize nominee Lucy Skaer, whose three

limestone blocks are a more conceptual reference to the traditional practice of lithographic stone printing, inciting viewers to consider how objects have changed their meaning by being seen in different contexts.

Elsewhere, the Japanese-born Leiko Ikemura’s hybrid rabbit-woman sculpture responds to the

Fukushima nuclear disaster – and the ensuing impact on animal- and human-birth defects – and

Emin’s When I Sleep is a harrowing self-portrait in response to the grief of losing loved ones, while Joanna Rajkowska’s supersized blackbird egg The Hatchling allows visitors to listen to the sound of chicks breaking out from their shells; their heartbeats give a visceral, interactive nature to the work.

Across the park, Frieze Masters will feature more than 130 historical galleries, bringing together six millennia of art history, from exquisite antiquities, to Old Master paintings and luminaries of the 20th century, creating an exceptional environment to discover and acquire.

New expertise in 20th-century and Asian art is brought to the fair with the addition of Laura Hoptman (The Drawing Center, New York) and Amin Jaffer as curatorial advisors.

TAKE A WALK AMONG THE STARS MONTBLANC ISSUES AN INVITATION TO RECONNECT WITH OUR PLANET

In today’s fast-moving world, it is often easy to forget how precious and magnificent our

planet truly is. The space travellers who have walked among the stars describe the immense emotion of seeing the Earth floating in the vast expanse of space. In a campaign for

the launch of the newly designed StarWalker writing instrument, Montblanc partners with Chinese-American astronaut Leroy Chiao and Korean illustrator Jaehoon Choi to capture the moment of awe when a space traveller gazes back at earth from space and experiences that unexpected longing for home.

The former astronaut and space station commander is one of a handful of individuals to have

experienced the wonder of space and witnessed the fragility of Earth, having spent 229 days in space over the course of four missions. Leroy Chiao has used Montblanc writing instruments since his student days, and was gifted a personalized one by his wife on the occasion

of his 4th mission. In a series of animated stories illustrated using a StarWalker pen, he

shares his impressions of looking back to earth and its mesmerizing blue Aura from the stars. “While orbiting the earth, you realize the majesty of our Blue Planet…home,” he explains. “The earth is alive … I deeply understand this looking down on our colourful planet.”

144 LUXURY LIVING

The new StarWalker collection expresses the wonder of being part of one of humankind’s most mysterious and powerful adventures: space exploration. The black precious resin of the writing instrument

recalls the dark vast expanse of space, while the translucent dome beneath the emblem evokes the earth rising above the lunar horizon as seen from the moon, a reminder to appreciate our Planet. The polished

platinum-coated cap and barrel represents the astronaut. The angled clip cover and dome resembles

the shape of a space rocket, while the cap screw mechanism on the forepart and cone is similar to an astronaut securing their helmet to a space suit before setting off into space.

The StarWalker line-up includes a Precious Resin edition in all black with contrasting metal fittings, a

Doué edition with a black resin barrel paired with a metal cap or forepart, and a sleek full Metal edi-

tion. Each edition is available as a Fountain Pen, Ballpoint and Fineliner Pen. A matching notebook and pen pouch feature a view of the Earth from space. The earth is printed on a shiny metallic leather

that shimmers through the image creating a three-dimensional effect as if seeing the sparkling cosmos. Telling the awe-inspiring story of space exploration, the StarWalker collection inspires us to reconnect with our planet. A reminder of its brilliance and preciousness. Prics start from:

THE WORLD’S FIRST

LUGGAGE FOR SPACE TRAVEL

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing Horizon Studios have unveiled the first zero gravity space travel luggage ..

No longer confined to the pages of science fiction, space tourism is an emerging industry that has already taken its first customers into orbit. As we prepare for commercial flights to the

moon and beyond, we must also prepare the luggage to get us there: Horizn ONE is a design study by Berlin-based company Horizn Studios and Alyssa Carson, the world’s youngest astronaut, to address the needs of the next generation of travel – to space.

As one would expect Horizn One is designed for zero gravity and therefore comes with a flex-

ible ultralight carbon fiber shell reinforced with graphene to add strength and flexibility. An inbuilt smart screen in the suitcase has been designed to allow users to connect with their friends

and family , while a biometric security function lets the user unlock the case with fingerprint recognition there is also a weird sounding ‘bacteriostatic technology’ which promises to keep clothes fresh. It also boasts an electromagnetic base that would allow it to attach to the floors or walls of the spacecraft to make storage and access more straightforward in zero gravity.

Described as “luggage for generation space”, Horizn ONE will be the most advanced suitcase in the universe, currently it is still in the concept phase but the company is hoping to launch its first space range by 2030. Pre-order price tag of £40,000.

TAKE PART IN THE WORLD’S MOST

EXPENSIVE & EXCLUSIVE WHISKY TASTING SESSION

An exclusive tasting seminar of the world famous Ichiro’s Malt Card Series Card collection from the Hanyu distillery in Japan will be held this November in Sweden 151

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

The exclusive tasting seminar event will take place on 1-3 November

at Upper House hotel in Gothenburg, Sweden. It will cover the complete “full deck” series of unopened Ichiro’s Malt Card collection from the Hanyu distillery in Japan. The event is hosted by Swedish

whisky enthusiast Pye Palm, and the tasting will be led by Japanese whisky expert, Stefan Van Eycken.

The entire card series is rare, and the last time a complete collection of the Ichiro’s Malt Card Series came onto the market it was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $455,000 in September 2017.

152 LUXURY LIVING

“The estimated value of the full deck series today would be around $775,000. I could sell it, of course, but I think sharing the experience with other whisky enthusiasts is much more fun,” says Palm, who has

collected his series during several trips to Japan over the last 30 years. Just like a full deck of playing cards, the collection features 52 single cask editions that each represent a card in a poker deck, plus two additional jokers.

The bottles are signed by Ichiro Akuto, the distillery founder’s grandson, who saved 400 casks when the distillery shut down in 2000 and started the bottling of his playing card collection.

“The Ichiro’s Malt Card Series is one of the most iconic series in the world of whisky. This is only the second time a complete tasting of the series will

be held, and the first time ever that all the bottles are opened specifically for one event,” says Belgian author and Japanese whisky expert Stefan Van Eycken, who is leading the tasting seminar in November.

153

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

The event will be held at the five-star Upper House hotel. It includes a dinner at the Michelin awarded Upper House Dining, a rooftop restaurant on the 25th floor overlooking the city of Gothenburg.

The whisky seminar will be divided into four tastings, so called flights. Each will include 13 to 14 bottles with a 1 cl tasting of each. Each bottle has its own original card label and its own unique flavour.

“Hanyu has a very particular character. Referring to Ichiro himself, it’s unlike any other whisky you’ve tasted before.

Prepare some shiny, fresh and ripe fruits, colourful root vegetables, both brown and white sugar, and some exotic spices. Then mix all this with sweet and sour fruit juice in a glass. That’s the best way I can describe it,” says Van Eycken.

As an additional treat, a limited edition special malt will be released to commemorate the occasion. All guests

participating in the tasting seminar in Gothenburg will become honorable members of the Monochrome Joker Club. The club is founded by Pye Palm as an extension of the whisky tasting seminar, and is exclusive to the select few worldwide who have tasted all 54 casks of Ichiro’s Malt Card Series.

“I thought it would be fun to create a space for like-minded, passionate enthusiasts with a true dedication for the flavours of whisky. The idea is to invite members to a number of worldwide tastings of different Hanyu whiskies,” says Palm.

AbOUT THE IcHIRO MALT cARD cOLLEcTION Ichiro’s Malt Card Series originates from the Hanyu Distillery, is one of the smallest and most renowned distilleries in Japan, which ended their production in 2000. The founder’s grandson, Ichiro

Akuto saved 400 casks when the distillery shut down and the best ones, between 1985 to 2000 were used for the bottling of his playing-card collection.

Considered as the Oscars of the culinary world and like the Oscars this awards ceremony has faced some fierce criticism over the years for glorifying expensive, European-leaning tasting menu restaurants run by white men but all that has changed with this year’s event taking place in Singapore 158 LUXURY LIVING

To promote diversity among the restaurants a set of new rules were introduced this year the most controversial change being that previous winners of the top award could not participate, so the one guarantee was that there would be a new star at the top of the list, but is this really fair? Surely winning this title should be because of ability not exclusion of the previous winner that would be akin to withdrawing Usain Bolt from the 100m final at the Olympics so the others had a fair shot at winning! Obviously these top restaurants still need to recognised so restaurants such as El Celler de Can Roca and the now-defunct elBulli in Spain; The French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park in the United States; The Fat Duck in England; and the current No. 1 Osteria Francescana in Italy will enter the Best of the Best programme - a hall of fame recognising their achievements. Another change implemented this year was that the academy would ensure an equal split of male / females on the voting panel with over 1000 voters responsible for the results. Each person is selected for their understanding of the international dining scene and typically includes chefs, restaurateurs, journalists and gourmands. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna has been ranking the top restaurants in fine dining around the globe for over 17years and now in our more inclusive and diverse world the awards whilst facing controversy is having to adapt with the times, winning this coveted number one position will ensure that your restaurant for a short period becomes the most indemand restaurant in the world pushing up bookings and reviews.

Winner: Mirazur MENTON, FRANCE

With unrivalled views of the French Riviera, three

levels of cascading vegetable gardens churning out the sweetest produce and a team of outrageously

talented cooks and front-of-house staff combine to

make Mirazur the ultimate restaurant experience. Argentina-born chef Mauro Colagreco’s unique

cuisine is inspired by the sea, the mountains and the restaurant’s own gardens, including Menton’s em-

blematic citrus fruits. Colagreco moved to France in his 20s, working with celebrated chef Bernard

Loiseau until his death in 2003. He later worked in Paris with Alain Passard at Arpège and Alain Ducasse at Hotel Plaza Athénée before settling in Men-

ton, on the Italian-French border, where he opened Mirazur in 2006.

It’s fair to say that 2019 is Mauro Colagreco’s year. Steadily ascending The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list since its debut at No.35 in 2009, Mirazur cel-

ebrates 10 years in the ranking by rising to No.1. The accolade coincides with the restaurant finally achieving the coveted three Michelin stars, as well

as the beginning of a three-year renovation project

involving a new dining room, extensions to the vegetable gardens and a more immersive dining experience.

Highlights from Mirazur’s tasting menu include salt-crusted beetroot from the garden with caviar

cream, eggs from the chicken coop (when touring the gardens, keep an eye out for prize hen, Tina Turner) with smoked eel and hazelnuts and a bri-

oche of potatoes with melting egg and white truffle. The restaurant’s perfect-for-sharing bread is infused with ginger and served with a Pablo Neruda poem.

FEMALES TAKING CHARGE

The World’s Best Female Chef 2019 Daniela Soto-Innes When Cosme first entered The World’s 50 Best Restaurants

list in 2017, Daniela Soto-Innes was best known as a protégée of Enrique Olvera, the chef with whom she opened the modern

Mexican restaurant in New York in 2014. In 2016, at age 25, she had won a Rising Star Award from the prestigious James

Beard Foundation. Three years on, she has been shortlisted in the same foundation’s Best Chef category alongside the likes

of Alex Stupak, who she says “opened the door for this type of Mexican food in New York”. At just 28, she is the youngest

winner of The World’s Best Female Chef Award, and it is fair to say her star has risen.

But Soto-Innes is not overly motivated by awards. The 28-yearold, who grew up in Houston, Texas, says Cosme is more of

a “cultural institution” than a restaurant, and keeping a happy team of staff from all corners of the world is central to deliver-

ing her consistently world-beating Mexican-influenced cuisine. Rather than following a set idea of what fine dining should

be or how a kitchen should work, Soto-Innes follows her own rules. In her kitchen, staff don’t necessarily have formal training, but they learn all the skills they need under her careful tui-

tion. There’s no rule of silence – hers is a vibrant kitchen where music plays and staff warm up with exercises pre service. And the menu itself is fuss-free à la carte, with sharing plates that put an emphasis on flavour.

162 LUXURY LIVING

The fun-loving chef

ripping up the rulebook and transforming Mexican cuisine

After four years at Cosme, Soto-Innes is now paring

back her dishes, evolving her cooking with simpler con-

cepts and cleaner flavours. It was always the opposite of

Tex Mex, but her cuisine is not simply modern Mexican

in the US - it is something unique or, in her own words, “another state of Mexico”. On the plate, this translates to crab infladitas - a “beautiful mistake” that happens when a tortilla inflates when frying - and light, fresh

dishes like razor clam or fluke tostadas. Then there are

classics that have been on the menu since the begin-

ning, like Soto-Innes’s showstopping duck carnitas and her signature corn husk meringue dessert.

163

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

While Soto-Innes still runs the kitchen at Cosme, in 2017 she and Olvera opened Atla, an all-day casual eatery serving elegant Mexican classics like ranchero eggs and quesadillas in New York’s NoHo district. Later this year, the duo will make

their first foray onto the West Coast, opening adjoined restaurants Damian (serving Japanese-influenced Mexican) and Ditroit (a taquería) in Los Angeles. Like

Cosme and Atla, both new restaurants are likely to carry the minimalist, Alonso de Garay-designed decors and clean flavours that are typical of the Soto-Innes-Olvera partnership, but each with its own LA identity.

Soto-Innes is known for her fun-loving demeanour, but behind the party-girl exte-

rior is a serious, straight-talking chef with business acumen and bundles of talent. It is perhaps the mix of the two that has allowed her to change the game in her

restaurants, giving opportunities to mostly immigrant cooks ranging in age from 20

to 65, who she says would otherwise likely be driving taxis and working in laundro-

mats. She thrives on empowering her staff and treating every personality differently, and says her relative youth is something to embrace rather than feel ashamed of. In

an industry dominated by men, she also runs a kitchen that is two-thirds made up by women.

By winning The World’s Best Female Chef Award, Soto-Innes says she hopes to use

the platform to help inspire and support people of all ages, races and nationalities

in becoming cooks. With her fresh, inclusive approach and her seemingly effortless success, she is sure to inspire many.

Limited to just 550 bottles, 310 bottles are to be cellared for the future, each bottle will retail at a staggering $34,000 a bottle (€30,000/£26,200) meaning a case will cost as much as a Lamborghini! Liber Pater’s 2015 vintage is made entirely from ungrafted vines and comprises a mixture of rare grape varieties once commonly grown in Bordeaux including; Petite Vidure, Tarnay, Castets and St-Macaire, alongside the better known Petit Verdot and Malbec. The cuvée is vinified in grey, clay amphorae of 250 and 400 litres, with a twomonth maceration period followed by three years ageing. Pasquet says the 2015 has sensations ‘rarely found in wines from Bordeaux due to the change in the taste post-phylloxera’ To secure an exclusive bottle of the 2015 vintage contact Liber Pater info@liber-pater.com

A glass of wine is one of life’s simplest pleasures, perfect after a long stressful day to ease away the tension or shared with friends and family. But creating that perfect bottle of wine is no easy feat given the limited ingredients and growing conditions for grapes thus wine is one of the toughest draughts to make well, meaning good bottles and vintages can sell for huge sums of money. Because of this collectors and wine drinkers alike covet particularly good years and over the years we have seen prices for wines reached record breaking figures.

Here we take a look at the 5 most expensive bottles‌ 171

William Sokolin

Wine Seller Who Broke Famed Bottle

CHATEAU MARGAUX 1787 | $225,000 Having the initials of none other than Thomas Jefferson, this ancient wine had a very sad end actu-

ally. Jefferson was a famous oenophile, and when he was serving as an ambassador to France, he often

bought bottles from Bordeaux and Burgundy. This particular bottle was owned by William Solokin who priced it at $225,000, and took it to a Four Season Hotel for a dinner to celebrate it sadly a waiter

dropped it and the bottle shattered into bits. While the insurance company paid out, Solokin will

probably never be able to get over the loss of a wine like that which he was unable to taste even a bit. 172 LUXURY LIVING

CHATEAU LAFITE’S 1869 | $230,000 Though estimated to sell for up to $60K each, the Chateau Lafite’s 1869 bidding war for the rare vintage resulted in a $230,000 for a standard sized bottle available at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong in 2010. Though ancient, the wine was known to the collector who acquired all three of the

three available 1869 bottles for a total of $690,000. This is the most anyone has been willing to pay for a standard sized bottle of vino, and the owner can slowly relish drinking the first two bottles while keeping the third to the envy of all.

SHIPWRECKED 1907 HEIDSIECK $275,000 Salvaged from a Swedish Freighter off the

coast of Finland in 1998, the 1907 Heidsieck, sold for $275,000 US). Surprising consider-

ing there are 2,000 bottles of this wine but what makes this vintage cost so much is the

history behind the bottles – the ship had been torpedoed by a German submarine during the

First World War. For 80 years, this wine had

been at freezing temperatures, left undisturbed

and away from any source of light. Chris Hoel, who tasted this wine, reported gunflint, black

rifle powder and something salty on the nose, and graham cracker, flamed oranges and burnt lemon oil among others on the palate.

2

1947 CHEVAL-BLANC | $304,375 The 1947 French Cheval-Blanc is widely considered by many to be the best Bordeaux ever made. In 2010, the 67-year-old bottle was sold to a private collector at a Christies auction in Geneva, according

to the Classification of Saint-Emilion wine, the Cheval Blanc has a class A status of all the merlot wines, there are only two which were granted with this classification. The grapes were said to be leg-

endary between April and October of 1947, and the survivor bottle that outlived many a person is the only known bottle in the Imperial format from this particular Saint-Emilion vintage.

ORNELLAIA 2016 VENDEMMIA D’ARTISTA

CREATIVE TENSION

Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista celebrates the unique character of each new vintage of Ornellaia. Every year since the release of Ornellaia 2006 in May 2009, a contemporary artist creates a work of art and a series of limited edition labels drawing inspiration from the single word chosen by the Winemaker to describe the character of the new vintage.

For the eleventh edition of the project Vendemmia d’Artista, the artist Shirin Neshat has been chosen to interpret the character “La Tensione” (Tension) of the Ornellaia 2016 vintage creating a work of art for the estate, customized a limited series of bottles in large format, and designed a label that, expressing the vintage character, will be inserted in each Ornellaia case containing 6 bottles of 750ml. The labels represent details of women’s faces, hands and bodies, and are entirely covered in Farsi. The contrasts between the softness of skin and the graphic nature of the text seduce the eye and set the imagination running. The Vendemmia d’Artista project includes a label created by the Artist for one bottle in each wooden case of Ornellaia (containing 6 x 750ml bottles) and a limited edition of 111 large size bottles (100 double magnums (3L), 10 Imperials (6L) and 1 Salmanazar (9L) each individually numbered and personally signed by the artist. Collectors around the world covet these bottles and the auction of some of them during an annual charity event raises money in support of the Arts. The collection was recently auctions by Sotheby’s on the 13 Sep 2019 fetching £176,720 with proceeds from this online benefit auction of rare Ornellaia bottles will go to support the Mind’s Eye Program at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

IS THIS THE FUTURE OF FOOD?

Sushi Singularity will create 3D printed food based upon your biometric data

The sushi craze has grown rapidly over the past few years primarily because of its many health benefits but Japanese conceptual design studio Open Meals has decided to take this further with the creation of Sushi Singularity a restaurant concept that will use a customer’s saliva, faeces and urine to create 3D-printed sushi tailored to their nutritional needs. The restaurant will feature robotic arms that aid and assist the itamae creating raw fish dishes through a 3D printing process based on food on the finding from each diner’s health ID. To avoid any awkward toilet trips upon arrival to the restaurant, upon booking a reservation the restaurant will send guests a health-test kit. Once sent back to the sushi restaurant, the customer’s genome and nutritional status is analysed and made into a “Health ID.” Using that information, Sushi Singularity builds personalized sushi recipes, optimizing ingredients with the nutrients the diner needs most. Tasty examples of the Sushi dishes currently being advertised include cell-cultured tuna, honeycomb octopus, steamed shrimp and even a squid castle! Open Meals claims Sushi Singularity is “beyond the future of sushi.” Because it can print sushi and share sushi plans worldwide, the project is part of not just one but two revolutions, the website states: “Sushi will connect people around the world, and will be produced, edited, and shared online in the form of ‘new sushi.’ Sushi combined with biometrics will enable hyper-personalization based on biometric and genomic data.” The restaurant is due to open in Tokyo in 2020

Gourmet News

ADD A TOUCH OF ROYALTY TO YOUR WHISKY COLLECTION Crown Royal have released their second addition to the Crown Royal Extra Rare Whisky Series, the “Crown Royal XR,” a limited-edition whisky crafted from one of the final batches of whiskies produced at founder Samuel Bronfman’s original LaSalle Distillery.

Steeped in history the distillery was the first distillery opened by the Bronfman family who created the

original Crown Royal in 1939 to commemorate king George VI and Queen Elizabeth visit to Canada. LaSalle sadly ceased production in 1996, but is still used today as a warehouse for Crown whiskies.

The Crown Royal Extra Rare Canadian Whisky is another creation by Crown Royal’s Master Blender Andrew McKay. And though it is indeed the most expensive one in the Crown Royal product line, everyone who gets

a taste of this high-end Canadian whiskey will surely say that it’s well worth every penny. The aroma is heavy

on the spice, both from the whisky and the barrel along with sweet notes of vanilla and candied apple caramel coating. The mid-palate is a bit aggressive and raw and is mixed with a young corn profile and dried fruit resulting in the signature rich, smooth, award-winning flavour of Crown Royal.

For connoisseur’s pair with a Cuban Partagás Corona Senior, a cigar that comes off very fresh, becomes more

savoury and leathery with the whisky. The XR’s spicy qualities of spice are downplayed by the partnership, while its fruits become more prominent.

TREKKIES CAN NOW INDULgE IN A REAL gLASS OF

PICARD WINE

Star Trek: The Next Generation fans and anyone who has seen the trailers for the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series will know

that Jean-Luc Picard (who is portrayed by British actor Patrick Stewart) hails from a family of winemakers in France’s La Barre region called Chateau Picard, but what many will not know is

that Chateau Picard is actually real and the name of an award-

winning, multi-generational vineyard located St-Estèphe, France. Collaborating with the Star Trek production team, the ‘real’ Château Picard, owned by Château Palmer’s co-owners, Bordeaux négociant house Mähler-Besse, have crafted two limited edition releases: a 2016 Chateau Picard Cru Bourgeois from Bordeaux, France, and a Special Reserve United Federation of Planets old vine zinfandel.

The 2016 Chateau Picard Bordeaux is described as Bordeaux blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that is subtly smoky and spicy with a bright, fresh, clean-tasting style.

The United Federation of Planets wine is a 2017 old vine zinfandel from Sonoma County, California. It’s a blend of 87% zinfandel, 12% petite sirah and 1% Syrah and described as having “aromatics of concentrated

strawberry, blackberry and plum preserves with a chewy-layered mid-palate filled with hints of white peppercorn, sweet red and black fruit”

Bottles can be purchased directly from StarTrek Wines with a bottle of Chateau Picard Bordeaux retails for a robust $60 and a bottle of United Federation of Planets retails for $50. Sadly for international Trekkies these bottles are only available in the US.

192 LUXURY LIVING

We all love to travel and if you’re a lover of fine wine then trailing around France’s numerous vineyards or saltering through the Napa Valley in California would seem like the perfect holiday choice but what about donning a wetsuit and diving under the ocean to visit a winery? Sounds bizarre, well that’s exactly what one would have to do if they wanted to visit the Edivo winery, the first underwater winery situated in Croatia.

193

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

Owned by brothers Ivo and Anto Šegović and Edi Bajurin, Navis Mysterium

or ‘Sea Mystery’ wine isn’t just a nostalgic fly-by-night enterprise it’s actually very practical.

Obviously the wine making process begins above ground in a small village

between Ston and Orebić, in the middle of the Pelješac peninsula, here the regional grape variety is Plavac Mali and once grown, harvested and pressed the wine is bottled and stored on land for three months before the bizarre underwater process begins.

The wine is transferred into specially made glass bottles that are then placed inside a clay amphorae jug which have narrow necks and two handles like the ones used in ancient Greece. Insides these jugs they are coated with a thin

layer of resin whilst on the outside they are protected by cork and two layers of rubber. The wine is then left to rest for 700 days placed inside special

cages which are locked to protect from curious divers and treasure hunters. Nowhere it seems is safe!

Ageing wines under water doesn’t initially sound like a natural process but at

20 meters below the surface the sea temperature is stable and there is minimal light and silence which means it is the perfect environment for ageing

wine, plus the wine takes on a distinct pinewood aroma which otherwise could not be achieved above ground.

As you can imagine after sitting in the ocean for 2 years the bottles once

brought to the surface look like pieces of sunken treasure covered in corals, seashells and algae and in fact look like pieces of art and no two are the same.

194 LUXURY LIVING

Priced from €77.00 for a bottle of Navis Mysterium to €336.00 for a Navis Mysterium Amphora

these bottles would make for an enchanting gift and for the more adventurous as previously mentioned you can don a wetsuit and visit the “underwater cellars” - including bottles stored in a sunken ship at the bottom of the Mali Ston Bay.

Named by CNN Traveller as one of the most unusual wineries in the world, this is one wine tour for those who fancy something a little different. www.edivovina.hr

THE TESLA OF AVIATION Shaking up the aviation industry

The ICON A5 is certainly a game changer in recreational sports flying industry, this compact, sexy amphibious lights sports aircraft (LSA), has been created for those who have always dreamed of flying but don’t want the expense or hassle of having to undertake endless flying lessons with the typical training process practically half the time and price of what is required for a standard pilot’s license. 198 LUXURY LIVING

199

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Created by former fighter pilot Kirk Hawkins and Steen Strand, the ICON A5 is marketed predominantly as a “lifestyle product” and not a private plane and we can see why, the single-engine prop plane has wings you can sunbathe on and a diving platform for swimming after the plane arrives at its beach destination, useful, post-landing recreational amenities are not something one usually finds on private airplanes! Both simple and complex in its design, the wings can be folded quickly and easily – without tools – allowing sport pilots to store their aircraft in a garage, or to use a simple trailer in order to tow the ICON A5 to the nearest airport or lake for that matter and the simple flying controls are comparable to that found in a sports car. Safety has been paramount to the creation of the ICON A5 and its sublimely-fine-tuned aerodynamics was designed to prevent the pilot from losing control in the event of engine power loss (stall). ICON’s goal was to make a plane that would not spin during a stall, and the A5’s spin-resistant airframe is the result of careful engineering and testing by aviation veterans. The ICON A5 has been designed so that it will not descend quickly during a power loss, allowing the pilot the time and space for recovery. The ICON A5 also comes with an airplane parachute system for emergencies, and an easy-to-understand, single gauge angle of attack (AOA) system. Most recently the ICON A5 was named the 2018 Light Sport Aircraft of the Year by air.one, a leading online aircraft sales platform. This recognition was based on the A5’s innovative safety features, leading-edge design characteristics, and enjoyable in-flight experience. Praising the ICON A5 for its commitment to safety and design, specifically noting the A5’s Angle of Attack (AoA) indicator, ICON Parachute System (IPS), and Spin-Resistant Airframe (SRA). They also lauded the plane’s versatility with its amphibious capabilities, foldable wings, and ability to be easily loaded onto a trailer and transported off airport. Of course there are obviously limitations to what you can do with the ICON A5 - It hasn’t been designed to go far its range is just 491 miles and it isn’t built for speed (109mph is as racy as it gets) and it can only carry one other passenger but what it lacks in distance and speed, it more than makes up for in innovation.

200 LUXURY LIVING

A fully loaded ICON A5 costs from $389,000 which is still extremely cheap compared to that of a private jet, however ICON have recently introduced fractional ownership schemes with half ownership, priced at $225,000 plus a management fee of $1,500 per month which will give the owner 150 days use a year of the ICON A5 and for a cheaper option still, there is the quarter-ownership scheme priced at $125,000 with a $900 monthly management fee and this will permit the owner 75 days use of the ICON per annum. BUGATTI CENTODIECI A 21st-century upgrade, the Centodieci meaning 110 in Italian is a modern interpretation paying tribute to the first BUGATTI hypercar of the 1990s, the legendary EB110. Aerodynamic changes include a sizable rear wing instead of the graphic two-dimensional rear of the EB110 with its two pill-shaped tail lights, the Centodieci relies on a wide air outlet opening for more efficient engine thermals, bringing to life the flying tail light elements in graphic kinship with the EB110. It took several months to develop solutions to ensure a balanced temperature. As in the EB110, the engine is seen behind a transparent glass surface. The rear is formed into a single ventilation hole, characterised by the eight rear light elements, 2+2 exhaust tailpipes positioned on top of each other in a black matt anodised finish and a performance diffuser to improve downforce. The overhanging rear wing is permanently attached in the style of the original EB110 SS.

FLYING CARS FOR THE MASSES

When you think of flying cars or VTOL’s you automatically presume that they’ll be expensive, hard to operate and well futuristic, but the Blackfly is different, it promises to deliver the futures’ must have flying car at a reasonable price without the need for a pilot’s license!

216 LUXURY LIVING

Designed and built by Canadian company OPENER, the BlackFly is a fixed-wing, all-electric, vertical

take-off and landing (eVTOL) personal ultralight aircraft who claims to bring pie-in-the-sky dreams of

the flying car to every household at in at a price comparable to that of a well-equipped, family-sized SUV. The specifications for the BlackFly are also pretty impressive - a single-seat, personal aerial electric vehi-

cle composed of epoxy-impregnated carbon fibre. The BlackFly measures 13 ft. 7 in. wide, and 13 ft. 5 in. long. There is a pair of cantilever tandem wings on the front and rear of the aircraft, with each outfitted

with four tractor configuration contra-rotating propellers that are powered by eight electric motors. Able to land on asphalt, snow, ice, and grass OPENER claims the BlackFly will be energy efficient and more efficient than that of an electric car using less watt-hours per mile of travel – so far so good!

Flying the Blackfly seems to be relatively easy too, controlled by a joystick (think games console controls)

it manages the control pitch, roll, and yaw with a thumb button to control altitude. The entire system is a triple-redundant fly-by-wire platform with flight stability being software controlled, and features modes for cruise-control, auto-land, Geo-fencing, and even an option to “return home.”

But before you dash out to purchase this UFO looking flying machine there are some limitations. Firstly

its range is limited to just 25 miles at a cruising speed to 62 mph and of course it can only carry one person so you’ll need to be reduce your circle of friends if you purchase one of these. One the plus side though is operators do not need a pilot’s license, but they will need to pass the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Private Pilot written examination, as well as finish the vehicle familiarization and operator training that’s required by OPENER.

OPENER claim that the BlackFly will go into production this year with a rough selling price of $200,000

LOTUS EVIJA The world’s first fully electric British hypercar has been revealed... With unparalleled performance and a target power output of 2,000 PS, it sets new standards in terms of advanced EV engineering. Quite simply, the Lotus Evija is the most powerful series production road car ever built. Like all Lotus cars throughout the brand’s storied 71-year history, the Evija has been precision-engineered to deliver an outstanding driving experience both on the road and track. It is the most dynamically accomplished model ever built by the company, setting new standards for Lotus driving performance. Above all else, it is ‘For The Drivers’. As a name, Evija (pronounced ‘E-vi-ya’) means ‘the first in existence’ or ‘the living one’. The Evija marks the start of an exciting new chapter in the history of an iconic and much-loved British sports car brand. It is the first hypercar from Lotus, and the company’s first model with an electrified powertrain.

Exclusivity and desirability go hand in hand in the world of hypercars, and the Evija is blessed with an abundance of both. Production is limited to not more than 130 examples, making it among the most exclusive cars ever launched. It’s a figure set in tribute to the car’s project code, Type 130. Lotus road and race cars throughout the brand’s seven decades of success have been assigned a Type number, and the Evija is no exception.

PURITALIA BERLINETTA THE ITALIAN SUPERHYBRID Italian sports car specialist Puritalia who back in 2012 brought us the Puritalia 427 has revealed a new super-hybrid Puritalia Berlinetta grand tourer with stunning good looks.. This two-door supercharged monster features cues from the Ferrari 250 GTO and the Shelby Cobra and delivers 965-hp (720-kW), 1,248-Nm (920-lb-ft) able to hit a top speed of 208-mph (335-km/h). The battery capacity is quite small, two packs totaling 5.2 kWh, but they’re enough to give you 12.4 miles (20 km) of electric range. The powertrain consists of a 5.0-liter V-8 mated to an electric motor, with both units sending drive to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automated manual transmission with paddle shifters. In hybrid model, an onboard computer determines the mix of internal-combustion and electric power for optimal efficiency, taking into effect driving style as well as real-time road and weather conditions. Inside a large colorful digital dash and generous 10-inch touchscreen take center stage with an and where most supercars tend to have superracy, low-slung seats you need to shoehorn yourself into, the Berlinetta offers as much leg room as a typical sedan, with comfy, sportish Sabelt seats and plenty of headroom for tall drivers. Only 150 will be built. Each hand built in Italy and customizable to each customer so no two cars will be the same. Prices start from ₏465,000 (US$515,000)

THE $2 MILLION HYPERCAR THAT’S ALREADY SOLD OUT! Back in March last year at the annual Geneva Motorshow Croatian supercar maker Rimac Automobili presented its latest upgrade to the Rimac C- One previously launched in 2012 with a mean looking machine the Rimac C-Two.. This stunning car claims to have a 1,914-horsepower engine that enables a 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 1.85 seconds making it one of the quickest cars in existence.

Designed by Rimac’s in-house team and made entirely from scratch with all-new, groundbreaking technologies - the C_Two features a full carbonfibre monocoque with bonded carbon roof, integrated battery pack and merged rear carbon subframe.

224 LUXURY LIVING

Rimac’s own suite of electronic control systems means that full torque-vectoring is available (and

necessary!) to harness 1,914 hp (1,408 kW) of power and 2,300 Nm of torque - two and a half times the torque output of a contemporary hypercar.

With a top speed of 258 mph (412 km/h), a zero to 60mph time of 1.85 seconds and a zero to 100 mph (161 km/h) time of 4.3*, the C_Two makes devastating use of the instant-torque available to

an electric vehicle and the traction made possible by the unique drivetrain and bespoke Pirelli tyres.

Yet the C_Two is a comfortable, bespoke GT car that has a 650 km range, can be charged to 80-per-

cent capacity in less than 30 minutes, and has been designed to be used hard, repeatedly and reliably. This is no fragile thoroughbred; new and innovative, liquid-cooled thermal management systems

mean that this is a car capable of two full laps of the infamous Nürburgring at full power - with a negligible drop in performance.

Limited to just 150 copies of the Concept Two and with a whopping price tag starting from $2 million and that’s without the extras!

Rimac have confirmed that all the cars have been sold with deliveries expected 2020.

2020 ASTON MARTIN RAPIDE E The first Aston Martin all-electric car is not just an electric car but an electric sports car with heritage…

The premium British automaker enters the electric race by adapting the oldest vehicle currently

available in their portfolio to new all-electric standards. The Aston Martin Rapide has been around since 2010 which, in ultra-luxury sedan years, borders on senior citizenship.

Powered by an 800V battery electrical architecture with 65kWh installed capacity using over 5600 lithium ion 18650 format cylindrical cells. These are mounted in a bespoke battery pack where the

original 6.0-litre V12, its gearbox and fuel tank were located. This battery system powers two rear mounted electric motors producing a combined target output of just over 610PS and a colossal 950Nm of torque.

Rapide E’s range target is over 200 miles under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Pro-

cedure (WLTP), while the model is capable of charging at a rate of 1851,2 miles of range per hour using a typical 400V 50kW charger. However, the car’s 800V high-voltage battery system enables

faster charging of 3101,2 miles of range per hour, using an 800V outlet delivering 100kW or higher. Being an Aston Martin, the Rapide E has been developed with a high-performance objective. Pro-

jected top speed for the Rapide E is 155mph, with a sub-4.0sec 0-60mph time and a 50-70mph time of just 1.5sec. It’s important to stress that these figures are not restricted to a narrow window only

when the batteries are fully-charged. Instead the target is for maximum performance on-demand throughout majority of the battery state of charge window, as would be expected from a conventional

internal combustion-engined car. This includes the ability to drive a full lap of the Nürburgring with absolutely no derating of the battery and the ability to cope with the daily demands of repeated hard acceleration and braking.

The car’s exterior and underbody has also been aerodynamically optimised and complemented with newly-designed aerodynamic wheels. Shod with Pirelli P-Zero low rolling-resistance tyres featuring

noise-cancelling foam, Rapide E aims to achieve higher levels of aerodynamic, frictional losses and cooling performance over the standard Rapide S.

The price hasn’t been disclosed, but considering all 155 units have already been spoken for, it hardly matters anyway. The Rapide E made its debut at the 2019 Shanghai auto show.

ELEXTRA Designed in Switzerland, engineered and built in Germany using a revolutionary, all-new electric drivetrain, ELEXTRA redefines the supercar. Looking like a cross between a Lamborghini Aventador and a sedan the four door Elextra claims to be the quickest accelerating electric car ever, capable of hitting 60mph from a standstill in just 2.3 seconds. Designed by start-up Classic Factory, the Elextra will introduce an all-new, “revolutionary” electric drivetrain, with technology that enables the car to keep the same power output while halving the size of the electric motors. This new technology also prevents overheating issues as it doesn’t need any additional cooling systems. Classic Factory is partnering with an unannounced company based near Munich in Germany to develop the new drivetrain, while the car’s chassis and body will be engineered in Stuttgart.

228 LUXURY LIVING

Power will be provided by two electric motors producing a combined output of 680 hp, enabling the Elextra to hit 0-62 mph in 2.3 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 155 mph while providing a range of up to 374 miles. The Elextra will be hand-built near Stuttgart with a limited production of just 100 units, prices are yet to be revealed.

A LEGENDARY BOAT

TRANSFORMED INTO A VESSEL OF THE FUTURE

232 LUXURY LIVING

More than a boat, Energy Observer is a model for energy networks of the future: digitized, decarbonized and decentralized.

233

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Energy Observer is a boat like no other, the first hydrogen powered vessel revolutionizing maritime adventure. Ensuring voyaging goes hand in hand with technology and ecology!

Aiming for energy autonomy with no greenhouse gas emissions or fine particles, this legendary former racing boat has been repackaged into an electrically powered ship of the future, powered by a mix of renewable energies and a low-carbon hydrogen production system using seawater.

Built in Canada in 1983 by the naval architect Nigel Irens, under the supervision of the navigator

Mike Birth, Energy Observer began life as a racing catamaran racing under the names of Formule TAG, Tag Heuer, Enza New Zealand, Royal & SunAlliance, Team Legato, or Daedalus. Today this

legendary boat has been repackaged into an electrically powered ship of the future with a new name Energy Observer which is paving a new way, the one of sailing autonomously powered by hydrogen.

u

Originally 24.38 meters long, it has been lengthened four times and today measures 30.5 meters long

by 12.80 meters wide. Developed in collaboration with engineers from the CEA-LITEN the boat

will test and prove the efficiency of a full production chain that relies on the coupling of different renewable energies. Following its launch in the spring of 2017 the boat has embarked upon a world tour lasting 6 years in order to optimize its technologies and promote sustainability.

234 LUXURY LIVING

Now equipped with revolutionary energy architecture, Energy Observer is the first vessel in the world, able to produce its hydrogen from seawater, thanks to renewable energies. Almost every horizontal

surface on the vessel is covered with solar panels (1,400 square feet of them in all), which curve gently to fit the aerodynamic contours. Some, on a suspended deck that extends to the sides of the vessel, are

bi-facial panels, generating power from direct sunlight as well as light reflected off the water below. The rear is flanked by two vertical, egg whisk-style wind turbines, which add to the power production. The vessel is also equipped with a kite sail that assists in navigation and also generates power. While

it is pulling the boat through the water, the ship’s propeller turns an electric motor to create electricity. Energy Observer has already completed more than 28,400 nautical miles since the commencement of

its oceanic voyage visiting over twenty four countries most recently completed a historic expedition, the longest since it left Saint-Malo in 2017, to become the first vessel around the world to visit the Arctic Circle.

NOT ALL YACHTS ARE BORN EQUAL! Italian boatyard Canados has launched the first in its 120 Caesar series where pleasure and practicality are seamlessly merged together. Not all yachts are born equal. Most are simply engineered to allow movement between marinas and for occasional enjoyment at sea. At Canados however, with over 70 years’ experience in manufacturing the finest custom yachts they have been driven to rethink this basic perception. The result? The new 120’ Caesar.

he Canados 120’ Caesar truly represents a new experience in yachting where every parameter of an owner’s expectations has been considered and addressed. The primary defining aspect of the 120’ Caesar is the constant interaction between the ocean and those onboard. To achieve this, no detail has been overlooked. The oversized bathing platform, under-sole storage for your personal watercraft, plus the 4.30m tender’s garage that transforms into a teak paneled beach club (complete with shower and day-head) all contribute to optimising on-water activities. Oversized saloon glass windows offer permanent visual contact with the sea. The 120’ has been created by a dedicated team of yacht builders in collaboration with a panel of yacht owners, each of whom fully understand what is required from a yacht of this size. Every single detail, piece of equipment and shape has been drawn to optimize form and functionality. From deck space, terraces and the carbon fiber hardtop opening system, to oversized portholes… you name it, it is included. The number of innovations created to enhance enjoyment are simply too many to list. It is an open secret within the yachting industry that Canados is one of the few builders to manufacture its own interiors. That our craftsmen are the best is not disputed either. Each Canados is bespoke, fashioned according to our client’s tastes. Working alongside our clients, or their designers, we realize their dream interior, crafting custom furniture or sourcing loose furniture from luxury brands. One thing is sure, whether your interior choice is classical or contemporary, during the day or night it will provide the perfect environment to appreciate the coastline slipping by the side picture windows. 246 LUXURY LIVING

While certainly a stunning yacht, the Canados 120’ is also a true ocean going vessel. Pleasure and practicality have been seamlessly merged to ensure your pleasure and safety is effortlessly achieved. Internationally renowned Boffi Kitchen manufactures the galleys to our own design, while companionways and passages all offer secure circulation around the yacht even when underway. For added aesthetic appeal and purity of the yacht’s profile, all life rafts are concealed in quick release storage lockers. The focus on interaction of guests with the ocean was not paid lip service by our inhouse engineers; they created jaw-dropping results through a series of unique technical innovations including floor to ceiling main deck side glass walls and optional terraces featuring pop-up security guardrails to optimize the views afforded by its hydraulic gull wing doors and wrap around windows. The raised pilothouse is equipped with the latest state-of-theart navigation, communication and monitoring systems, allowing the crew total control over the entire yacht from a single position. Distinctly athletic in her design and aesthetic appeal, the 120’ Caesar is an elegant and efficient performer. Her twin MTU 16V 2000 M94L engines developing 2,600hp, allow her to cruise effortlessly at 24-knots and achieve a top speed of 27-knots. Faster yachts may exist, but surely not with such a power to performance ratio. No other yacht that size possesses the 120’ Caesar’s level of comfort and level of performance for commensurate power. Thanks to a carefully studied noise management plan, silent cruising reminds you your yacht proudly displays a Canados badge. At 22-knots the engines are inaudible on the flybridge, and all over the main deck. While cruising, one can comfortably enjoy lunch in the dining room or watch a movie in the main saloon. The first 120’Caesar to be created a fully-custom 37 metre yacht, will now begin sea trials ahead of her delivery in a few weeks’ time spending the summer season cruising the waters of Southern Italy before debuting at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. THE NEW BUBEN & ZORWEG GRAND CONNOISSEUR XL BAR

THE NEAREST THING TO A PERFECT WORLD! In a perfect world, one should be able to savour the finest things in life directly at their original locations

256 LUXURY LIVING

Bars, the drinks they serve and the flavourful cigars you can smoke there, should be no exception. Following the example of the world-class writer and “puros” lover, Ernest Hemingway, the best Dai-

quiris have to be flavoured at the Floridita, in the heart of the Cuban capital of La Havana, and the

best Mojitos, just a few blocks away, at the La Bodeguita del Medio. Both these drinks demand to be

accompanied by an exquisite Arturo Fuente, Montecristo or Cohiba cigar. A few thousand miles away, in charming Paris, the same Hemingway would have certainly recommended the fabulous martini served at the bar of the Ritz Hotel in Paris. The same drink, so the legend goes, he helped popularise in the States after the war.

At Harry´s, in Piazza San Marco, the best choice could only fall on the remarkable Bellini cocktail, named in honour of the work of Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini. Not far from the famous canal city, Ferrara is home to the Al Brindisi Bar that traces its history back as far as 1100 AD. Titian and Cellini drank here in the 15th century, and Copernicus lived above the bar while studying at Ferrara University in the early 1500s.

However, that would be in a perfect world. In a near perfect world, the new GRAND CONNOISSEUR XL BAR is the right alternative. Handcrafted in Germany with precious high-gloss Macassar inlays, the opening of its doors reveals beautifully presented holders for wine, spirits and glasses. A central drawer acts as a functional humidor for approximately 60 cigars, and below, a climatic wine storage cabinet keeps your best vintages at the correct temperature.

So, once home from a day full of meetings, the owner of a BUBEN&ZORWEG GRAND CON-

NOISSEUR XL BAR can open its doors, pour a drink and light up that special “puro”, while enjoying the best quality sound coming from the inbuilt HiFi system. You only have to lean back, close your

eyes and listen to the suavest Buena Vista Social Club tune you ever heard, and reflect that in a near perfect World, this bar is the closest to perfection!

THE WORLD’S MOST

LUXURIOUS BED Luxury bed creators Savoir introduce THE THREE SIXTY billed as the world’s most luxurious bed and with a price tag of over a quarter of a million pounds

259

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

The new THREE SIXTY, bed is the epitome of contemporary luxury and bespoke British craftsmanship. Combining aesthetics, technology and ultra-luxury, the bed “that has everything” took the skilful

artisans at Savoir over 300 hours to create, showcasing Savoir’s pursuit of the extraordinary, pushing the boundaries in form, movement and craft. The development of such a bed with the dedicated handcraft, level of thoughtful integrated technology and design aesthetic is rare.

THE THREE SIXTY takes the art of fine bed-making to undreamed of levels of comfort and luxury. A celebration of no holds barred luxury; the smoothly curved exterior, upholstered in a beautiful soft

leather contributes to the contemporary design. The flowing sphere of veneer with its gentle twist, encircles the Savoir N°1 creating a calming sense of symmetry. Savoir craftsmen used time honoured carpentry skills to ensure the veneer finish is to Savoir’s exacting standards. The carefully selected

leather and smoky flawless grain of the Bird’s-Eye Maple can be specified to an endless level of choice. 260 LUXURY LIVING

The arched interior of THE THREE SIXTY exudes the power of cocooning, with the carefully applied tactile velvet. The exquisite Italian Dedar 100% cotton velvet is super-soft and irresistible to touch. The versatile colourway lends itself beautifully to the voluptuous cushioning which greets the sleeper on the interior. Celebrating a seductive ambience, the precision lines created by the curved and voluptuous ribs, provide a comforting sense of privacy. The considered fabric and textures complement the unique curved shape. The smooth flawless veneer flows in to the buttery leather, with the soothing velvet marrying the two textures. Tones and textures seamlessly flow. THE THREE SIXTY discreetly features turntable technology to rotate 360 degrees, allowing the user to select their view from the comfort of the Savoir N°1 via an app. Perfectly poised reading lights, designed specifically for Savoir and THE THREE SIXTY, have been incorporated along with power and USB outlets. It is through the bespoke nature of a Savoir that allows such innovative concepts to be carefully and thoughtfully incorporated into a bed design, without interrupting the design aesthetic. The entire crafting process of THE THREE SIXTY takes over 300 hours, during which 120 hours are dedicated to completing the N°1 bed set and 180 to craft the supporting frames and headboard. In the construction of the N°1, Savoir’s master craftsmen execute every element seamlessly, from the eightway hand-cording of the springs within the round sprung base to the precision tufting and painstaking hand-slipping of the circular mattress. The minute detail and considered craft delivers the ultimate combination of balanced support and softness. THE THREE SIXTY features an exclusive HKy topper made with the rare natural fibres of an indigenous species of Yak from the Khangai region of Mongolia. Four kilograms of Tengri noble yak fibres, hand-combed from 40 yaks, fill the luxurious topper. With only 100 grams of fibre available from each yak per year, the HKy topper defines exclusive luxury. The fibre, which is as soft as cashmere, has incredible natural properties, it is warmer than merino wool and naturally resistant to odours and water. Savoir Managing Director, Alistair Hughes, commented, “THE THREE SIXTY takes the art of fine bed-making to undreamed-of levels of comfort and luxury. Formed around our N°1, the detail is pure perfection. Our craftsmen execute every element seamlessly, and every night you will feel the difference. We’ve worked with a selection of leading experts to ensure every element of THE THREE SIXTY is exquisite. From renowned leather artist Bill Amberg, to deliver the finest and straightest leather stitching, to the world’s leading creator of bespoke turntable technology to produce a movement that is exquisitely smooth and soundless.” Skilfully created in the Savoir London Bedworks, this one of a kind design celebrates the essence of bespoke craft. Each Savoir bed is made in the traditional way, handcrafted by an in-house team of artisans. Through using labour intensive, time-honoured techniques, Savoir is able to make the world’s most extraordinary beds. The Three Sixty will be available exclusively in Harrods from June. A full bedset, as pictured, starts from £250,000. 261

THE REGENERATION OF ONE OF LONDON’S MOST ICONIC BUILDING CONTINUES

BATTERSEA POWER STATION

264 LUXURY LIVING

Battersea Power Station with its iconic four chimney stacks has been a global icon since the day it was built. Situated on the banks of the River Thames in the Nine Elms district, Battersea Power station which once stood as London’s tallest building for 30 years still remains today as one of the largest brick buildings in the world and now following a £9billion regeneration has transformed into one of London’s most exciting and innovative neighbourhoods.

265

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s Battersea Power Station’s is no ordinary Power Station, entering through bronze doors sculpted with personifications of power and energy, ascending via elaborate wrought iron staircases and arriving at the celebrated art deco control room with walls lined with Italian marble, polished parquet flooring and intricate glazed ceilings, looking out across the heart of the Power Station, its turbine hall, its giant walls of polished terracotta, it’s no wonder it was christened the ‘Temple of Modern Power’.

266 LUXURY LIVING

Ever since it’s opening, the iconic backdrop of Battersea Power Station has formed a versatile cultural

canvas featuring on Pink Floyd’s 1977 album in Batman the Dark Knight and as countless fashion catwalks.

In 1983 the power station was decommissioned and sat empty but leap forward 30 years and the once derelict Power Station’s incredible rebirth has seen it transform into a vibrant mix of unique homes

designed by internationally renowned architects, shops, restaurants, offices, green space, and spaces for the arts.

London’s variety and the individual character of its many places – like its vibrant street style – are part

of its extraordinary attraction. This is, after all, the home of tailoring and all-things-bespoke in Savile Row, yet also to vibrant markets in Camden, Portobello and Spitalfields. Boasting a dazzling array

of hotels – from five-star grandeur in Knightsbridge to the latest hip hangouts in Soho – alongside a

stylish, ever-changing line-up of restaurants, bars and coffee shops throughout the city, London has earned its stripes as the world’s favourite visitor destination.

Situated just 15 minutes’ walk from Chelsea and Sloane Square, Battersea Power Station is one of the most significant real estate developments in the world. Its regeneration creates over 3 million sq ft of space for shops, restaurants, cafés and offices as well as approximately c.4360 new homes, across a 42-acre riverfront site.

The Nine Elms Development has been broken down into three phases: Its first phase - Circus West Village which become the fastest selling property development in the City was designed by Simpson

Haugh and Partners and dRMM. It snakes along the western edge of the Power Station offering 865

homes of one-two and three bedroom apartments, townhouses and penthouses. It also contains an exciting mix of restaurants and shops, which have set the tone for the entire development. The range of amenities and services make it a place where visitors come to dine in a riverside restaurant and where homeowners can easily buy the newspaper or a coffee.

u

267

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Sir Gilbert Scott’s design for Battersea Power Station elevated a functional

building into an Art Deco masterpiece. He went beyond what was expected,

to create a building that even 70 years later remains modern and compelling. That refusal to settle for the basic, to create something original, vibrant and enduring, now sets the vision for the redevelopment of this cherished build-

ing by Wilkinson Eyre Architects for phase two a home within the power station.

As innovative as the building itself, these flexible, beautiful spaces will be the ideal base from which to enjoy life at Battersea Power Station. The new 253

homes ranging from studios to penthouses within the Power Station will be

split between three neighbourhoods, all with access to stunning rooftop gar-

dens and interiors designed by Michaelis Boyd Associates – a practice famed for elegant, simple design.

The Power Station will also become home to a variety of International brands, Apple’s London headquarters will be based here.

A major part of the development is the new Power Station Park which will sit between the Power Station and the river. The 6-acre park will embody

the scheme’s commitment to community by delivering a new public park for

London. The space will incorporate traditional park features, informal play

areas and have capacity to host large festival-style events. Using elements of

industrial history and London street aesthetics in its design and materials, the park will play a vital role in the place making at Battersea Power Station and flank London’s prized asset, the River Thames.

The third and final phase: Electric Boulevard will be the crowning glory of the development

framed by world-class buildings by Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners, this will be a truly special place to make a home and an exhilarating new urban landmark. Battersea Roof Gardens, designed by Foster + Partners, on the west of the site will provide over 636 new homes, residents’ lounges, a

healthcare facility and hotel, as well as two storeys of terraced retail. Resi-

dents will be able to enjoy stunning roof top gardens designed by James Corner, who also designed The Highline, New York.

On the other side of Electric Boulevard is Prospect Place, the first permanent residential development in the UK to be designed by Gehry Partners which will contain a further 727 new homes.

268 LUXURY LIVING

Gehry Partners have designed two palettes

for the interiors at Prospect Place. There are

the ‘LA’ and the ‘London’ options. The ‘LA’ palette is all about adventure, excitement and breaking out of ordinary design concepts and includes features such as rough sawn wood fronted cabinets. The ‘London’ concept focuses on architecture and speaks of time, place and history.

The entire development is due for completion in 2025 for more information visit www.batterseapowerstation.co.uk

BEVERLY HILLS HILLTOP PLOT SOLD WITH A

99.99% MARK-DOWN!

276 LUXURY LIVING

They say that the luxury real estate market is experiencing a slow-down but if the recent sale of “The Mountain” is anything to go by it hasn’t just slowed down its completely collapsed!!

277

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Towering over the bustling city of Los Angeles “The Mountain” as it is affectionately called is a 157acre mountain plot seated on the highest peak in Beverley Hills so when it was listed for sale for a

price tag of $1billion although exorbitant no really batted an eyelid after all its zip code 90210 is home to some of the world’s most expensive real estate but earlier this month in a small auction room this same plot sold for just $100,000.

Located off Benedict Canyon, “The Mountain” has a somewhat chequered past. Big enough to fit the

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks into it the plot actually comprises of 17

individual parcels of land. For more than 40 years this plot of land has been linked to foreign royals, entertainment moguls, and billionaires and all have failed to break ground.

Formerly called “The Vineyard” it was once owned by an Iranian princess who had enlisted the architects of Lloyd Wright Foundation to build her own American palace but following Iran’s Islamic Revolution her plans were abandoned and she retreated to more humble premises.

TV producer and real estate developer Merv Griffin became the lands next owner his goal was simple he wanted to create a home larger than that of Aaron Spelling who at the time was creating his vast 56,000sq ft property, but with so many property projects on the go his enthusiasm soon began to wane

and quietly the land was placed back on the market and purchased by billionaire Herbalife founder Mark Hughes who had plans to build a 45,000sq ft Mediterranean Mansion and wildlife reserve but

his sudden death in 2000 meant the project never got off the ground. Leaving the property to his son aged 9, his sole beneficiary the land was placed into trust and it is at this time that the story gets a little murky.

Enter Charles “chips” Dickens, a Atlanta real estate investor who borrowed around $23.75 million from the Hughes estate to buy and develop the property. It was “chips” and his business partner Vic-

tor Noval who attached the eye watering $1billion price tag to the land while marketing the land to potential investors and whilst there was interest it is alleged that Tom Cruise and casino heir James

Packer were interested there were no buyers and records show that “chips” and co, soon defaulted on the loan and with interest it had increased to $200million.

Burdened by debt the pair tried to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy but this was overruled by the Hughes trust who instead forced a foreclosure auction meaning the Hughes trust could repurchase the land and try and recover its loses. So once again the land is back in the hands of the Hughes Trust and only time will tell how this saga will end

MF Massimiliano Fronti

Massimiliano Fronti is an award winning architect offering a full architectural service together with interior design, masterplanning, 3D Rendering, Architectural Design, Architectural Drawings, Building Design, Project Managment, Industrial Design, CAD, Graphics and 3D Modelling With over 18 years of experience, gained both nationally and internationally with offices in Spain, Italy, & Dubai, he has a broad working spectrum having worked on a wide range of projects; which include hotels, industrial buildings, offices, apartments and private houses, and mixed-use schemes. Massimiliano Fronti thinks deeply about the social value and significance of architecture through practice, and thus creates space with emotion and humanistic care.

Exploring material and construction method is also the core of the design practice. Fundamental to his process is the use of light as a building element, defining space and animating form. Every design he creates is bespoke - developed with efficiency, elegance and authenticity - and always articulated with close reference to the topography of a given site. Everything created by Massimiliano Fronti is the outcome of an intensive dialogue between his clients. Each detail is carefully considered. From concept design to completion encompassing working drawings, specifications, rigorous site supervision and cost control – his methodology is exacting, with a strong intention on merging architecture and art, whilst redefining how these two disciplines work in the age of digital technology and content.

ELEGANT TOWNHOUSE

ON THE BELGRAVIA STREET WHERE THE ROYALS SOUGHT SANCTURY DURING THE WAR

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Situated on the south side of a prestigious Belgravia street, lies a beautifully proportioned family

townhouse with a private walled garden overlooking St Peter’s Church. Located in the heart of the Belgravia Conservation Area, Wilton Street possesses a colourful history, with past residents including famous dignitaries, politicians and artists. It is also reportedly the place where the Royal Family

stayed after being evacuated from Buckingham Palace during World War II. This imposing five bedroom townhouse is on the market with leading independent agents Russell Simpson and Maskells for ÂŁ6,000,000.

Arranged over 3,632 sq.ft., this handsome Georgian property is entered on the ground floor through a bright and welcoming entrance hall. The ground floor comprises a formal dining room, eat-in kitch-

en, guest cloakroom and study, and the kitchen provides direct access onto a charming south-facing

garden. Most rare for Belgravia, the garden extends over 40ft and includes an elegant paved area for al fresco dining and a favourable aspect for brilliant evening sun.

The first floor houses a formal drawing room, with classic floor-to-ceiling windows and impressive ceiling heights of 3.2m, producing proportions of great volume. Flooded with natural light, this dedicated

space provides the perfect setting for entertaining, whilst a separate conservatory/reading room provides a calm space for reflection, with views of the appealing St Peter’s Church.

The upper section of the house is occupied by the

bedrooms, with the second and third floors reserved entirely for the master and guest suites. The fourth

floor also boasts two additional bedrooms and a family bathroom. Downstairs, the lower ground floor

comprises a utility room, a well-proportioned TV/ family room, which could be used as an additional bedroom, storage vaults and staff living quarters.

This exceptionally quiet property also features air

conditioning throughout and an integrated home control system.

Jake Russell, Director at Russell Simpson, commented: “This property boasts a highly sought-after south fac-

ing garden, something of a rarity in the area. Due to its

situation between Victoria and Hyde Park, it would suit someone working in the West End or Green Park that

wants to be able to walk to the office. This house also of-

fers very good value compared to an equivalent one in

Chelsea, so would also suit a family in need of more space, allowing them to get significantly more for their money”.

Jamie Hope, Managing Director at Maskells, adds; “Wilton Street is an address that offers an ease of access to Mayfair and St James that has proved to be most attractive over the years. With a superb first floor drawing room, the house allows for effortless entertaining and flexible family use. Very few houses of this size and nature

offer a garden this large in Belgravia meaning that the house reflects excellent value and that viewing is highly recommended.”

and close to Buckingham Palace Gardens and Green Park. Mayfair is within easy walking distance, as are the array

of amenities to be found in Belgravia, including Michelin starred restaurants, boutiques and art galleries.

The Wilton Street property is available through Russell Simpson and Maskells for ÂŁ6,000,000. Viewings are strictly by appointment only.
