It is the largest diamond to have been discovered in over a century. Formed deep within the earth billions of years ago The Lesedi La Rona Diamond was discovered in Botswana by the Lucara Diamond Corporation in November 2015. Unearthed just 200 meters down within the Karowe open-pit mine, a mine purchased just five yearsago from DeBeers and known for producing some very large, exceptionally high-quality diamonds, and over 400,000 carats of gem-quality diamonds annually. The Lesedi La Rona Diamond is the third largest diamond ever to be found weighing 1109 carats, only the Black Sergio and Cullian are larger and to the naked eye this huge chunk of rock appears to resemble that of a tennis ball. The name Lesedi La Rona, meaning ‘Our Light’ in the Tswana language spoken in Botswana, was picked from among thousands of entries submitted by Botswana citizens in a contest. Touted as “the find of a lifetime”, this uncut diamond which has the potential to yield a 400-carat flawless diamond one of the largest top-quality diamonds ever because of its grade D diamond rating meaning it has the be brightest, clearest and most brilliant clarity any diamond can have was placed for public auction at Sotheby’s London in June with an estimated price tag of $70m. Sadly the whopping rough diamond didn’t come close to the undisclosed reserve price and was withdrawn from auction when bids stalled at $61 million. Some believe the decision to auction the uncut stone at a public auction a break from tradition is the reason why the stone failed to sell. Diamond sales are usually very secretive with diamonds only offered to an elite group of dealers who assess the diamonds potential and evaluate how many individual diamonds can be cut from it before it is sold on, others though believe the public auction an open-forum for buyers put bidders off after all would you want to be the lapidary to cut this stone? CEO William Lamb of Lucara Diamond Corporation said, “We chose the auction route because we wanted to have access to as many ultra-high net worth individuals as possible, those people who had bought very expensive items in the past to see if diamonds would be purchased as a collectible the same as high-value art is” In recent years there has been an avalanche of record-breaking selling prices being achieved for rough diamonds. Only in May this year an 813 carat diamond unearthed from the same mine as the Lesedi La Rona diamond called “The Constellation” was sold for $63.1 million to Dubai based firm Nemisis International setting a new record for the highest price ever achieved for a rough diamond. Here we take a look at the eight most expensive diamonds sold at auction around the world

The Cullinan diamond is now mounted on the head with sticks Cross, and is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3,106,75 carat with 621.35g. Polishing stones from the largest gems named Cullinan I or Star Africa First, and at 530.2 carats (106.0g).The price of this diamond is about $400 million.
The hope diamond is a large, 45. 52 carat with 9. 10 grams, the location is in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC-blue Hope Diamond to the naked eye because the number of traces of boron in the crystal structure, but exhibits a red phosphor under ultraviolet light.
Discovered in 1988 in South Africa’s Premier Mine this 599 - carat uncut diamond took De Beers three years to cut before it was presented to the public in 1991 as a heart-shaped stone weighing 273. 85 carat (54. 77g). The Centenary Diamond is the third largest diamond produced in the Premier Mine.

Described as one of the ‘rarest diamonds in the World’ the Oppenheimer Blue is the largest Fancy Vivid Blue diamond ever sold at auction. This rare rectangular-cut stone, which weighs 14.62 carats, previously belonged to Sir Philip Oppenheimer, who hails from the opulent De Beers family and sold within 25 minutes – a record time for any jewel sold at auction. Blue diamonds of this type are extremely rare and are formed when boron becomes trapped within the lump of compressed carbon.
Discovered in the De Beers South African Cullinan mine in 2014, this 12.03 carat cushion-shaped flawless blue diamond was originally named the ‘Blue Moon’ diamond. Described as “internally flawless” by the Gemological Institute of America, it took New York jeweller Cora International six months to painstakingly cut and polish the raw stone. Sold at Sotheby’s, Geneva on it was purchased by Hong Kong tycoon Joseph Lau, who went on to rename it “The Blue Moon of Josephine” in honour of his seven-year old daughter.
This 24.78-carat, emerald-cut diamond was owned by Harry Winston, beautifully mounted on a platinum ring this Fancy Intense Pink stone was sold at auction in 2010 and purchased by Laurence Graff the legendary diamond collector known as the “King of Bling. Upon purchasing it Graff unveiled major plans to make this already beautiful ring even more beautiful. After weeks of meticulous work and repolishing, the Graff Pink Diamond was unveiled, slightly reduced in carat size to 23.88 carat the stone was upgraded as an Internally Flawless Vivid Pink Diamond and is now classed as priceless

THE PRINCIE DIAMOND - $39.3MILLION
In April 2013, when Christie’s New York City sold this rare pink diamond to an anonymous buyer, its lofty price made it the second-most expensive jewel ever sold at auction. Discovered some 300 years ago in India’s Golconda mines, the 34.65-carat stone once belonged to an Indian prince in Hyderabad. It was named “Princie” centuries later, after a young European guest at a Van Cleef & Arpels party in Paris in 1960.

Thought to be the largest fancy-vivid orange diamond ever to exist, ‘The Orange’ as it is known is an extremely rare 14.82-carat pear-shaped stone which sold at auction Christies Geneva in 2013 to an unnamed bidder. Pure orange diamonds, also known as “fire diamonds,” are exceptionally rare in nature to put this into perspective ‘The Orange’ is more than double the weight of any Fancy Vivid Orange diamond that has come to auction in modern times. The previous orange diamond record holder, “The Pumpkin Diamond,” a 5.54-carat modified cushion-cut gem sold for $1.3 million in 1997. 17

HOW DID THE BUSINESS START? KM: As sisters, we are very close and had each gone through the experience of leaving the loving family home and our country, to set up lives overseas. One day, we were both in NYC, having lunch in a roof-top restaurant and were full of ideas. We started talking about home and we soon identified we both wanted to create something that would speak highly of Colombia. We kept talking and came up with the idea of leather accessories. From there the seed was sown.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS? KM: We are an emerging brand within the luxury goods industry, but more than anything, we are a family business, we want to deliver our customer the best personal experience. THE SCENT OF A WOMAN To the perfume lover, vintage perfumes are a dangerous addiction that, once you have tried and smelt you will never want to return to the mass produced perfumes of today. Why I hear you ask, well it’s simply really they really don’t make ‘em like they used too! many of the ingredients common in vintage perfumes are no longer in use due to reduced availability, ecological or health concerns, costs, changing tastes, or a combination of the above. So if you like what you smell in vintage perfumery the real oakmoss in chypres, the natural ambergris and civet, unctuous musks, a high percentage of floral notes then it may be difficult to accept what is being manufactured today. For the purposes of clarity: “Vintage” is a relative term. It may refer to very old perfumes which have been out of production for years, or older formulations of classics that are still in production (nearly always in modified form), or even relatively recent perfumes discontinued in haste. Here we take a look at some vintage perfumes still available today.

CHANEL Nº5 The legendary Chanel No 5 was the first perfume launched by Parisian couturier Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. Chanel N°5 is a symbol of good taste and is currently one of the best selling perfumes in the world. Coco Chanel asked the perfume designer Ernest Beaux to create a perfume ‘ which smells like a woman’. Chanel N°5 is a very complex fragrance which does not allow any of the fragrant components to be isolated out of the composition, what was exactly a request of the great Chanel – the perfume should not smell like a rose, or a lily of the valley, but as a composition. The perfume became famous thanks to many celebrities who wore it, among which Marilyn Monroe. Chanel N°5 is often connected to her name because during an interview in 1954 she said that in bed she wore only ‘some drops of Chanel N°5’. That statement became a superb advertising slogan and a reason for millions of women around the world to choose this perfume. The current Chanel N°5 face is Nicole Kidman. Ernest Beaux created two series of perfume samples numbered 1-5 and 20-24 and asked Coco Chanel to choose one of them. Madame Chanel chose the sample no. 5 and thus the perfume got its name. Superstitious, Chanel presented her new perfume on the fifth day of the fifth month of 1921. The top notes are composed of aldehydes, bergamot, lemon, neroli and ylang-ylang, the heart of jasmine, rose, lily of the valley and iris, while the base is created of vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla, amber and patchouli. The first Chanel N°5 was captured in a simple rectangular bottle with the top which resembled Place Vendome in Paris. The first bottle was designed by Chanel herself and represents her classical principle – the less is more.

JOY BY JEAN PATOU JOY by Jean Patou was created as ‘the world’s most expensive perfume’ during the time of The Great Depression in 1929. JOY is created with a unique concentration of rare flowers with 10600 flowers of jasmine and 336 roses used within each bottle. During it’s most successful period JOY garnished enormous success and became the second best selling perfume of all times (the first best-selling is the legendary Chanel N°5). Intense and luscious with alluring floral composition, JOY was created by Henri Alméras, who made its top notes irresistibly delightful. The composition starts with fragrant jilt tuberose, luscious rose, ylang-ylang blossom, aldehydes, sweet and mouthwatering pear, and green notes. The heart beats passionately in pure and sweetly fresh jasmine notes, seductive and balmy spicy and darkened iris root. The base whiffs with sensual musk, warm and milky-powdery sandalwood, with mild musky civet tones. The bottle, of simple and straight lines with a golden thread around its neck, was designed by the architect Louis Süe in 30ml, 50ml and 100ml sizes for Eau de Parfume and 30ml and 50ml sizes for Eau de Toilette. Regardless of its simplicity, the bottle leaves an impression of luxury and hints that its content is one of the best perfumes of the world.

L’HEURE BLEUE L’Heure Bleue or ‘the bluish hour’ was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1912. The fragrance is velvety soft and romantic, it is a fragrance of bluish dusk and anticipation of night, before the first stars appear in the sky. The top notes open with spicy-sweet aniseed and fresh bergamot that gently lead to the heart of rose, carnation, tuberose, violet, and neroli. The soft and powdery floral notes are resting on a base of vanilla, Tonka bean, iris and benzoin. The perfume is mysterious, elegant, and timeless. The bottle is shaped like the one of Mitsouko and the stopper is shaped like a hollow heart that alludes to romantic pre-war years.
BAL A VERSAILLES Bal a Versailles by Jean Desprez is a Oriental fragrance for women. Bal a Versailles was launched in 1962. The nose behind this fragrance is Jean Desprez. Top notes are rosemary, orange blossom, mandarin orange, cassia, jasmine, rose, neroli, bergamot, bulgarian rose and lemon; middle notes are sandalwood, patchouli, lilac, orris root, vetiver, ylang-ylang, lily-of-the-valley and leather; base notes are tolu balsam, amber, musk, benzoin, civet, vanilla, cedar and resins. Emeraude by Coty was launched in 1921 by Francois Coty. The perfume offers an oriental smell with top notes of orange, bergamot and lemon; middle notes of jasmine, ylang-ylang, rose and Brazilian rosewood & base notes of amber, sandalwood, patchouli, opoponax, benzoin and vanilla. ARPEGE Arpege by Lanvin This famous perfume was made by Andre Fraysse for Lavine home in 1927. The name was chosen by the daughter of the perfumer and since she had been involved in music she chose name “Arpege�, the musical term arpeggio. In 1993, the perfume was successfully reconstructed. The Top notes are: bergamot, aldehide, peach, orange bloom, honeysuckle, orris. In the heart there are: rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, coriander, sensitive plant, tuberose, violet, and geranium. The base consists of: sandal, vetiver, patchoulis, vanilla and musk. The bottle is lovely, the beautiful figures on the black misted background represent mother and daughter (the wife and daughter of the perfumer), who are getting ready for the ball. In October 2009 the house of Lanvin created Arpege 120, utilizing the popular fragrance created back in 1927 and reformed in 1993.
SHALIMAR Shalimar was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, as a tribute to the legendary love story between Emperor SHAHJAHAN and his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who sadly died during the birth of their 14th child at the age of 39. Her death devastated Shah Jahan and he built the Taj Mahal and Garden of Shalimar in memory of his wife and their undying love. Shalimar is one of the best selling perfumes ever and its magic is undeniable. The perfume is composed of citrus notes; lemon and bergamot, jasmine, may rose, opoponax, Tonka bean, vanilla, iris, Peru balsam and gray amber. Coolness of the citrus notes leads to floral heart ending with a warm and luxurious trail. In 1985, it was repackaged and presented encased in a Lucite box to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its original launch, to date the composition of the perfume remains the same as when it was launched in 1925. 51

With an aura of luxury, glamour and mystic these multiplexes which once were fishing ports have evolved into some the world’s most fashionable destinations where the world most beautiful arrive on their floating palaces. The most expensive superyacht marinas in the world are located in the Mediterranean with the three most expensive and exclusive berthing all being located in Italy and not Monaco as one would imagine. Marina Grande, the gateway to the island of Capri is the world’s most expensive nestled among striking cliffs and colourful, quaint buildings the marina continually tops the Wealth Bulletin annual survey with pricing for renting a berth starting at €2,900 per night. Puerto Cervo in Sardinia and Marinia de Portofino on the Amalfi Coast completes the trio.

Outside of Italy, Spain’s legendary playground for the rich and famous frequented by Saudi Royalty is Puerto Banus Marina, on the Costa del Sol. Here berthing can cost anything up-to €2,400 per day. Founded in the 1970’s by Jose Banus this marina has played host to Hollywood icons and is a celebrity haven with Hollywood greats such as Audrey Hepburn Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner and Cary Grant, to modern day superstars such as Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria all holidaying within its shores. Fifth place is Ibiza’s Magna Marina on the hedonistic Balearic islands where prices in the peak season can reach up to €2,300 per day followed closely by France’s most famous Port de Saint –Tropez. The jewel of the French Riviera, this port like Puerto Banus in Spain has a celebrity heritage and has become an iconic destination for celebrities, models and millionaires since the 1950’s so it is surprising that its daily berth rate for a superyacht is only €1,650 per day. Port Hercules in Monaco host to the annual Monaco Yacht Show is probably one of the most famous marinas in the world so to be listed in seventh position is quite remarkable. Known for its combinations of wealth (being located in a tax haven may have something to do with this!), the marina exudes extravagance and glamour with berthing costs for a 55-metre superyacht costing just €1,200 per day. Outside of Europe the Miami Beach Marina on the Biscayne Bay in Florida is one of the largest marinas listed on the Wealth Bulletin’s list, with spaces for up to 400 yachts and 45 super-yachts. Miami Beach Marina is known among the super-yacht fraternity for its excellent has facilities, offering everything from an Olympic-sized swimming pool to 24-hour concierge services. Prices for a daily mooring her are surprisingly low in comparison to Europe with daily rates of just €883.00 In ninth position is the Port of Gustavia, in St Barths, with an extremely low daily rate of €500.00 this marina is considered to be one of the most exclusive marinas in the world primarily because it almost impossible to book during the peak seasons due to the small number of berthing places. Unlike its European marinas this marina is particularly busy during the winter months and especially Christmas and New Year’s.

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC 26th November 2016 - 6th January 2017 Christmas markets (Vanocni trh) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic. And the Prague Christmas markets are most impressive, lighting up the city and bringing locals and tourists together to share in the spirit, in a true ‘winter wonderland’ setting. The two best Vanocni trh are situated on the slopes of Wenceslas Square and in the Old Town Square. The markets consist of brightly decorated wooden huts selling traditional handcrafted products such as intricate glassware and jewellery, embroidered lace, wooden toys, metal-ware, ceramic plates and mugs, scented candles, beautifully dressed puppets and dolls, Christmas tree ornaments, and hats, gloves and scarves. This picture perfect festive scene is complete with brightly decorated a wooden hut surrounding a giant glittering Christmas tree which is shipped in from the Krkonose Mountains in the North of the Czech Republic. It is erected at the Old Town Square and draped in a blaze of lights. The tree is switched on every night around 5pm. Set against Prague’s dark gothic skyline this is truly a spectacular sight. Finally the Prague Christmas markets wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local gourmet cuisine delights with offerings of honeyed gingerbread, vánocvka (a braided pastry with raisins), and vosí hnízda (biscuits laiden with nuts and rum).
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN 19th November – 23rd December 2016 Christmas Markets or Advent markets in Sweden are extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and highlight many Swedish Christmas traditions, for example the consumption of glögg which is a hot spicy wine. Warm yourself with a glass of spicy mulled wine (glögg) and browse over the most gorgeous handicrafts and Christmas decorations. You can sample typical Swedish Christmas delicacies at the markets too so look out for smoked sausage, reindeer meat and traditional Swedish Christmas sweets. The Liseburg Christmas Market which takes place in Gothenburg is reputed to be the largest in Sweden with over 60 stalls and an open air ice rink nearby. Outdoor stalls sell Swedish Christmas sweets, smoked sausages, reindeer meat, glögg and a wide range of Swedish handicrafts and other gifts. At least four Xmas Markets take place within the city area of Stockholm, namely Skansen on the park island of Djurgården, which has the world’s oldest open-air museum where the Christmas market date back to 1903, Gamla Stan, commonly known as The Old Town just south of the Royal Palace, is, the oldest of the Swedish capital’s four festive markets. Cobblestone streets, chiming church bells and a wonderful aroma of roasted chestnuts will make you feel like you’ve walked on the set of A Christmas Carol.

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 19th November – 31st December 2016 There are a number of charming Christmas markets to enjoy in Denmark, but if you’re looking for the most famous of them all – offering a real Danish flavour head to Copenhagen and the Christmas Market of Tivoli Gardens. Copenhagen is a Christmas city, not just because Greenland is the home of the ‘Julemand’ (Santa) but because this holiday is the most eagerly anticipated by all Danes who have passed down its simple pleasures and traditions from generation to generation. Each year the Tivoli Gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland thanks to more than 500,000 fairy lights. Although the Tivoli Christmas Market has only been running only since 1994, it attracts more than a million visitors, an astonishing figure given that Denmark has a population of 5.5 million. Stroll around the 60 colourfully painted stalls offering porcelain and wooden dolls while sipping on a warming glögg, (Danish mulled wine) which is laden with liquor, raisins and spices, followed by a hot apple dumpling to ward off the cold chills. Warm yourself with a cup of mulled wine (gløgg) and take your time picking out that perfect Danish design gift or decoration to take home. The Russian theme, introduced last season, is still going strong this year, although Nordic touches have returned by popular demand. While the replica of St. Basil’s Cathedral remains, then, a traditional Father Christmas is back, residing in a nineteenth-century pantomime theatre, while stall decoration takes its lead from Danish and Scandinavian customs. The gardens also offer an ice rink, rollercoaster and theme park rides for those up for more than just a leisurely amble round the handicraft stalls. Based in the centre of the capital it attracts up to a million visitors, so expect crowds.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA 17th November - 26th December 2016 The Christmas Market season starts as the Advent season descends upon Vienna. During Advent Vienna is a city of nostalgia and romance, concerts and nativity displays and traditional Christmas markets with over 25 markets ranging from the large to the small. Steeped in history is Vienna’s Christkindlmarkt one of the most renowned Christmas markets in Europe dating back over seven hundred years. Follow Viennese customs and wrap up in your finest faux-fur, sip on glühwein, purchase the deliciously scented natural beeswax candles or try the crescentshaped Christmas biscuits (vanillekipferl) while soaking in the city’s magical market atmosphere. Other classics include the Christmas market in front of City Hall, the traditional Viennese Christmas market on Freyung, and the markets at Spittelberg. BRUSSELS, BELGIUM 25th November 2016 - 1st January 2017 Magical Christmases have a dazzling, sparkly meaning for those in Brussels because the Christmas Markets at the Grand Place and Place St. Catherine’s area are filled to the brim with activities for children and adults. Temporary shopping chalets and even brassieres go up at the end of November and last for the entire month of December through to New Years. Activities include a skating rink, a Big Wheel (Ferris wheel), round-about and ice dinosaur monster. All have entrance fees, but it is an exciting time for a city during the coldest months of the year. Brass bands, free performances and ice sculptures are also on display as part of the cultural programme. One of the highlights for Christmas shoppers are the 240 wooden Christmas chalets opened during this time. They line the streets of Bourse, Marché aux Poissons and Place St. Catherines. These stalls look like gingerbread houses, twinkling with fairy lights and covered with ‘snow-top’ roofs. In a city famous for its cuisine, what better place to indulge your sweet tooth than in Brussels. The Christmas market acts more as a gastronomic affair, offering plump French olives, sumptuous Belgian chocolates, waffles, steaming plates of moules-frites and snails, and seasonal croustillons (sugared doughnuts). 67
STRASBOURG, FRANCE 25th November – 31st December 2016 With over 300 market chalets, Strasbourg attracts over 1.6 million visitors during the Christmas season. There is an impressive Christmas tree on Place Kléber and a skating rink on Place du Château. Founded in 1570, Strasbourg Christmas market is without a doubt the most famous of all.Young and old stroll from chalet to chalet, enjoying the spice bread, bretzels, confectionery, pastries and mulled wine on offer. Louis Vuitton products have become staple in every fashionista’s wardrobe and this season the brand introduces a new range of rolling trunks ‘The Horizon Collection’ created by Marc Nelson designed for today’s modern traveller, it is a modernised version of the French brands classic truck only lightweight and on wheels! Within this issue of Luxury Living Magazine we take a step back in time and trace the origins of Louis Vuitton and its iconic luggage.

Designer, entrepreneur Louis Vuitton was born on August 4, 1821, in Anchay, a small hamlet in eastern France’s mountainous, Jura region. Son of a farmer and milliner, Louis knew from a young age that he wanted more from life then just to struggle to makes end meet. Sadly Louis, mother passed away when he was only 10 years old, and his father remarried, legend has it Louis, new stepmother was as severe and wicked as any stepmother depicted by Disney and as a stubborn and headstrong child, antagonized by his stepmother and bored by the provincial life in Anchay, Louis resolved to run away for the bustling bright lights of the capital to Paris. At the age of 13, Louis left home alone and on foot, headed off on his 292 mile trek to Paris. He traveled for more than two years, taking odd jobs to feed himself along the way and staying wherever he could find shelter. He arrived in Paris in 1837, after just celebrating his 16th birthday. At this time Paris was engulfed in an industrial revolution that had produced a litany of contradictions: aweinspiring grandeur and abject poverty, rapid growth and devastating epidemics. The teenage Louis was overwhelmed yet inspired and soon gained employment as an apprentice in the workshop of a successful box-maker and packer named Monsieur Marechal. In 19th-century Europe, box-making and packing was a highly respectable craft, and after several years of training Louis had gained a reputation amongst the Paris more fashionable as one of the city’s premier practitioners.

On December 2, 1851, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte staged a, coups d’etat which lead to his assumption to the Emperor of the French under the regal name Napoleon III. The re-establishment of the French Empire under Napoleon III proved incredibly fortunate for the young Louis as Napoleon III’s wife, the Empress of France, Eugenie de Montijo, a Spanish countess hired Louis as her personal box-maker and packer and charged him with looking after her beautiful clothes and garments which provided Louis with a gateway to mix with the elite and royalty. Shortly after the young Louis met and married a 17-year-old beauty named Clemence-Emilie Parriaux and a few months after his marriage, he left Monsieur Marechal’s shop and opened his own box-making and packing workshop in Paris. The sign outside the shop read: “Securely packs the most fragile objects. Specializing in packing fashions.” Four years after opening his own shop, Louis had designed and produced an entirely new trunk. Instead of leather, it was made of a gray canvas that was lighter, more durable, and more impervious to water and odors. More importantly, unlike previous trunks, which were dome-shaped, Louis’s trunks were rectangular making them stackable and far more convenient for shipping via the railroad and steamship. Louis’s trunk revolutionised luggage and were documented as “the birth of modern luggage”.
The trunks proved an immediate commercial success, with advances in transportation and the expansion of travel this placed an increasing demand for Louis’s trunks and in 1859, to fulfill the requests placed for his luggage, he expanded into a larger workshop in Asnieres, a village outside Paris, however, due to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War and the subsequent siege of Paris business was suspended. When the siege finally ended on January 1871, Louis returned to Asnieres to find the village in ruins, his staff dispersed, his equipment stolen, and his shop destroyed. Showing the same stubborn, can-do spirit he displayed all those years ago walking almost 300 miles alone at the age of 13, Louis immediately devoted himself to the restoration of his business and within months he had built a new shop at a new address, 1 Rue Scribe. This new shop was centered in the heart of New Paris, and was home to the prestigious Jockey Club and had a decidedly more aristocratic feel than Louis’s previous location in Asnieres so a new focus on luxury was adapted. The following year, Louis introduced a new trunk design featuring beige canvas and red stripes, this simple, yet luxurious, new design appealed to Paris’s new elite and marked the beginning of the Louis Vuitton label’s modern incarnation as a luxury brand. Soon thereafter, due to the continuing imitation of his look, in 1888, Louis created the Damier Canvas pattern, which bore a logo that reads “marque L. Vuitton déposée”, which translates into “L. Vuitton registered trademark” 89

For 20 years, Louis’s Vuitton continued to operate out of 1 Rue Scribe, innovating high-quality, luxury luggage, until he died on February 27, 1892, at the age of 70, but the Louis Vuitton line did not die with its eponymous founder. Under the direction of his son Georges Vuitton, the company began a campaign to build the company into a worldwide corporation, exhibiting the company’s products around the world launching the signature Monogram Canvas under a worldwide patent. Its graphic symbols, including quatrefoils and flowers (as well as the LV monogram), were based on the trend of using Japanese and Oriental designs of the late Victorian era. Under the guise of George Vuitton the Louis Vuitton Company introduced the Steamer Bag, a smaller piece of luggage designed to be kept inside Vuitton luggage trunks, the Keepall Bag, the Noé Bag made for champagne vintners to transport bottles and the Speedy Bag. In 1936 Georges Vuitton died, and his son, Gaston-Louis Vuitton, assumed control of the company and in 1966, the Papillon was launched (a cylindrical bag that is still popular today). In 1987 Louis Vuitton merged with Moët Hennessy a company formed in 1987 after the merger of prestigious cognac makers Hennessy and champagne producers Moët & Chandon and became LVMH Moët Hennessy, better known as LVMH. The label also opened its first stores in Japan: in Tokyo and Osaka and later expanded its presence in Asia with the opening of a store in Taipei, Taiwan in 1983 and Seoul, South Korea in 1984. By 1989, Louis Vuitton had come to operate 130 stores worldwide. Entering into a new decade of the 1990s and having operated for over 136 years the brand continued its expansion and opened its first Chinese location at the Palace Hotel in Beijing. Further products were introduced such as the Taiga leather line in 1993, and the literature collection of Voyager Avec... in 1994. Under the guidance of Marc Jacobs its Artistic Director in 1997, Louis Vuitton released the company’s first “prêt-à-porter” line of clothing for men and women, and in 2001, Stephen Sprouse, in collaboration with Marc Jacobs, designed a limited-edition line of Vuitton bags that featured graffiti written over the monogram pattern. This design was to become Louis Vuitton’s most successful collection, Jacobs also created the charm bracelet, the first ever piece of jewellery from Louis Vuitton. Over the coming years Louis Vuitton has introduced, the Tambour watch collection, the new Monogram Multicolore canvas range of handbags and accessories, the Speedy watch collection & the Damier Graphite canvas and has inaugurated stores in New York City, São Paulo, Mexico City, Cancun and Johannesburg, Shanghai, Champs-Élysées store in Paris and in 2010, Louis Vuitton opened what it described as their most luxurious store in London. With stores in every continent it is little wonder that Louis Vuitton is regarded as the most prestigious brand globally and is loved and adorned by stars and A-list celebrities alike who, even today with our fast paced methods of travel mirror that of the Paris elite of 1854 will not be seen dead travelling without there LV luggage. 90 LUXURY LIVING

Over the last few years Art Basel has slowly transformed Miami Beach from a hip and happening vacation spot into an art-world mecca. Each year art connoisseurs, gallery owners and members of the international art world head south from Switzerland in what can only be deemed as the art worlds own version of spring break.

This year Art Basel Miami Beach a spinoff of the premier international art show which began over 40 years ago, in 1970, in Basel, Switzerland will mark its 15th anniversary and from November 28th to December 4th, 2016 it will again play host to the international art world. Since its inception in 2002 Art Basel Miami Beach has evolved transforming the reputation of Miami which was perhaps better known for miles and miles of sandy beaches, classic Art Deco architecture and its wild and crazy nightlife. During the month of December Miami Beach is now recognised as an important art show with ground-breaking and visionary programs offering a series of special exhibitions at museums and galleries across its city. This year more than 269 galleries are set to participate, although thousands of galleries from across the world apply in Basel’s five categories - Nova, Edition, Survey, Positions and Galleries only several hundred are accepted to exhibit at the fair. This year’s list of accepted spaces includes galleries from 29 countries, including The Box and Various Small Fires from Los Angeles, Clearing and JTT from New York, House of Gaga from Mexico City, Galerie Greta Meert from Brussels, High Art from Paris, Nanzuka from Tokyo and two Miami-based exhibitors: Fredric Snitzer Gallery and David Castillo Gallery. The fair held at the Miami Conference Centre which offers 500,000 feet of exhibit space, a brand new 60,000 square foot ballroom, and 81 meeting rooms is divided into varied themed-sectors, the largest, the “Galleries” section, will feature 193 exhibitors. “Survey,” now in its third year, will present 14 curated presentations of work from before 2000. “Nova,” on the other hand, will focus on newer galleries and up-and-coming artists, with 35 exhibitors. “Edition” will bring together 11 galleries who focus on print-based work and finally, the “Positions” sector, with 16 solo booths, will provide a platform for individual artists to showcase a major project. Part of the “Art Basel Experience” is the series of official and unofficial events taking place at the same time which make up the “Miami Art Week.” Hotel lobbies along the Art Deco District transform into mini-galleries, and beyond the beach, a lot of the action will be at Miami’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods: the Miami Design District, Midtown and the Wynwood Arts District where large tents, temporary warehouses, make-shift galleries and stores pop up. The atmosphere here is quite different from the main venue, especially at Wynwood, reflecting on the very unique and spirited edginess of the alternative exhibitors. Art Basel Miami is something one has to witness to truly get a grasp for how magnificent it is. There is no shortage of things to do and see – including the eclectic and avant-garde fashions worn by the attendees and participants as they walk through the galleries and surrounding area unwittingly creating a show within the show. The annual event is something everyone who has an affinity for art, culture, design and creativity in general should experience first-hand at least once in their lifetime.

The story begins with Castro Fidel the Cuban leader, who driving in a car with his bodyguard asks his bodyguard what he is smoking, the bodyguard replies a fuma, a hand-made cigar made by a friend who worked at the nearby cigar factory, Castro tasted the cigar and enjoyed it so much that he ordered the cigars be made exclusively for him and his government officials including Ernesto “Che” Guevara at a top secret location the El Laguito Factory, a huge white mansion set beside a small lake in Havana. Secrecy was paramount to Castro as he feared the CIA was plotting to assassinate him via a poisoned or exploding cigar. It was here at the El Laguito factory that the Cohiba brand was devised. Tobacco leaves were sourced from plantations far and wide to try and recapture the original fuma taste with the final blend said to use leaves from ten of the finest plantations within the San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo growing area it was also during this development stage that an additional fermentation process was added to aid maturation. The Cohiba brand was formally launched in 1968 and soon became the official diplomatic gift sent to other cigar-smoking world leaders packaged in a wooden box with a distinctive black and yellow band Cohiba cigars were fast becoming the brand-name of Cuba. Still unavailable for commercial sale thanks in part to the US 1962 US embargo act. Having acquired a reputation amongst aficionado as one of the best cigars in the world the Cohiba was finally released commercially in 1982, in conjunction with the World Cup in Spain. At the time of its launch the brand had only three sizes the Classic line: Lancero, a size known in factories as Laguito No. 1; Corona Especial, or Laguito No. 2, and Panetela, or Laguito No. 3. In 1989, three further sizes were added: a Robusto, also named Robusto in factory jargon, an Exquisito, or Seoane, and an Esplendido, known as Julieta No. 2.

In 1992 the Línea 1492 was launched to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in Cuba with Siglo I, II, II, III, IV, V each represents the five centuries since Columbus first discovered tobacco in the New World. The Maduro 5, the Cuban maduro (dark wrapper) cigar line was added in 2007. The Maduro 5 is heir to the best tradition of Cuban dark wrapper cigars (capa madura), which uses the upper leaves of the plant and obtains its characteristic range of dark colours and texture through a long, complex process of fully natural fermentation. This wrapper, enhanced by 5 years of aging, is used in Cohiba’s Maduro 5 line. Today Cohiba is the flagshop of the Cuban Cigar manufacturers Habanos S.A, however like any other sought-after-luxury good product; it has become the subject of brand piracy, counterfeiting and more seriously disputes over trademark registration yet none of this has managed to slow down the brand’s appeal across the world. Cohiba continues to occupy its place in the global cigar market as one of the leading brands, as one of the most expensive cigars on retail shelves and as one of the most sought-after smokes for anyone who loves cigars.

The world has become a safer place with the world’s first high-security traveling case from the Döttling safe manufactory in Maichingen: the Döttling Guardian. It offers unique protection for up to six wristwatches, jewelry, cash, or important documents – any place and at any time.
MULTIPLE COMPONENTS FOR SINGULAR SECURITY A double-walled high-security tube – an in-house development by Döttling made of multiple components – is built into the leather. The hard metal component is almost as hard as a diamond and destroys tools such as drills and saws attempting to breach the Guardian. The tube’s polycarbonate content – a material also used for police shields – additionally makes the Guardian extremely impact-resistant. The material cannot be destroyed even with the biggest sledgehammers. At one end of the high-security tube there is a safe door that can only be opened with a three-digit code. If it is entered correctly the locking mechanism, consisting of four polished high-carbon steel locking bolts, opens. In brief, when locked, opening the Guardian requires incredible force and a good deal of time – time that’s short because the Guardian is also equipped with a GPS transmitter so it can be precisely located.
INDIVIDUAL TO THE EXTREME As for the exterior of the Guardian, the same applies here as to all Döttling products: there are hardly any limits to its individuality. For instance, the grip mounts made of polished stainless steel can be engraved. All imaginable variations of fabric or leather are also possible for the cover. All of this ensures that the Guardian is not recognizable as a “travel safe” – yet another plus for your safety.
GOES ANYWHERE WITH EASE The Döttling Guardian can be carried with either a hand grip or a shoulder strap, or, thanks to its compact construction with a length of only 14.5 inches and a diameter of 5.3 inches, can even be put in a suitcase. Each of the 110 pieces are totally unique as no individual hand-painted map can ever be exactly the same as another. The lower section of the dial has been decorated with the Côtes de Genève motif to highlight the ExoTourbillon construction at 6 o’clock, and a single rhodium-plated XII and rhodium-plated skeletonized hands maximize the view of the map. A discreet minute track has been added to the exterior of the dial with a red “60” at 12 o’clock for ease of reading. ORBIS TERRARUM POCKET WATCH 110 YEARS EDITION This is the first time Montblanc has created a pocket watch, and what better occasion than the Maison’s 110th anniversary to introduce such a new timekeeper. The Montblanc 4810 Orbis Terrarum Pocket Watch 110 years Edition not only harks back to the beginning of the 20th century when pocket watches were the timekeepers of choice, but also features the highly appreciated world timer function - the perfect complication for the modern traveler. Powered by the Calibre MB 29.20, the world timer complication has been developed and assembled entirely in-house by the Maison’s watchmakers. The dial is highly legible thanks to the 53 mm “Lépine” style steel case and a pure design, which leaves plenty of room for the 24 city names. The multi-layer dial is crafted out of layers of sapphire crystal showing the continents as viewed from the North Pole. Around the map are the names of the 24 cities representing the different time zones, while under the map a disk indicates the passage of day and night, as well as the 24 time zones.

INTERBRAND RELEASES 2016 BEST GLOBAL BRANDS REPORT Leading brand consultancy, Interbrand have named Apple, Google and Coca-Cola the three most valuable brands in its 2016 Best Global Brands report, with automotive and technology brands dominating the ranking with Tesla and Dior entering the Top 100 brands. Now in its 17th year, the report reveals the Anatomy of Growth, and features an insider’s view of how great brands grow great businesses. “It’s clear the best global brands are not just weathering change, but driving it,” says Jez Frampton, Interbrand’s Global Chief Executive Officer. “They understand their Anatomy of Growth is complex, unique and personal; they look inward and outward, expand into new markets, and create better experiences to grow their brands and businesses.”
‘MOVERS AND SHAKERS’ • The largest growth was achieved by Facebook (48 percent growth), Amazon (33 percent), LEGO (25 percent), Nissan (22 percent) and Adobe (21 percent). • For the fourth year in a row, Apple and Google claimed the top positions. Apple’s brand value grew by 5 percent to USD $178,119m, while Google’s brand value rose 11 percent to USD $133,252m. Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Toyota, IBM, Samsung, Amazon, Mercedes-Benz and GE round out the Top 10. • Hermes continues to grow improving this year by 17%, this is the highest increase within the retail sector and expands upon its 22% increase from last year • Retail is the Top Growing Sector, increasing 19 percent, followed by the sporting and luxury sectors—each experiencing a 10 percent increase. • Prada dropped dramatically in the rankings with-12% compared to last year • Hugo Boss suffered one of its worst years dropping out of this year’s top 100 122 LUXURY LIVING

Frieze the iconic London art magazine, conceived back in 1991 by Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover, celebrates its 25th birthday this year. Since its launch it has gone on to establish global recognition within the contemporary art world publishing three further magazines; Frieze d/e, Frieze Masters Magazine and Frieze Week and hosts three international art fairs; Frieze New York, Frieze Masters and Frieze London which is classed as one of the world’s most influential contemporary art fairs in the world. To mark its 25th anniversary Frieze London showcased a special retrospective ‘The Nineties’ at its annual fair held during the month of October. Selected by Geneva-based curator Nicolas Trembley, 14 galleries were invited to revisit seminal exhibitions from the 1990s, “The Nineties signified such a radical shift in time from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the AIDS crisis and the creation of the internet” Trembley said, “and galleries became key leaders rather than institutions.” Each gallery was tasked with highlighting key collaborations between dealers and artists that had a lasting impact on contemporary art and shaped what it is today.

The iconic photographs ‘Ray’s a Laugh’, which were published in 1996 were some of the most defining images of contemporary art during the 1990’s. Taken with a cheap throw away camera the photographs portrayed the poverty and deprivation in which Richard Billingham grew up and embodied everything the 1990’s stood for ; unconventional, troubled and Britpop! The images were deeply shocking, not so much for their content but for how they showcased with such honesty the slobbish and grotesque family lifestyle most would keep hidden behind closed doors. More than 30 pieces were later included in the ‘Sensation’ exhibition of 1997 at the Royal Academy of Art. 126 LUXURY LIVING
WOLFGANG TILLMANS AT GALERIE BUCHHOLZ
Galerie Buchholz presented a 1:1 reconstruction of the original exhibition space of Wolfgang Tillmans’ first gallery exhibition, which took place at Buchholz & Buchholz in Cologne in January 1993. The original installation consisted of more than 60 unframed c-prints, photocopies and magazine pages. What made this installation so important was “the radical thinking” behind it. No one at that time would have thought to hang magazine pages alongside original photographs and then leave the photographs unframed. The use of different materials and means of reproduction within one exhibition was, as Tillmans said: “To show the equivalents between a hand-printed fine photographic print that I made with my own hands, and a magazine page that has been printed for 30,000 copies, but that had been laid out and designed by me.” The 1993 exhibition established Tillmans’ within the fine-art world, elevating him from magazine to gallery photographer yet this transition was predominantly in part to the recession and the changing in spending habits.

French artist Pierre Joseph was one of the most significant artists of the 90’s who enacted little narrative scenarios with living people. His works appear as living sculptures moving or standing but not talking, and are inspired by fairy tales, role plays, advertising or contemporary life. Air de Paris presented works from the series ‘Characters to Be Reactivated.’ (1991-95), with a performance in which different characters, from policemen to sex workers, took over the gallery Pierre’s work helped to the art world to define the meaning of ‘relational aesthetics’ 127

DANIEL PFLUMM AT GALERIE NEU
Pflumm was a central figure in the cultural scene of 1990s Berlin. Pflumm founded the legendary Elektro club on Berlin’s Mauerstraße which featured DJs such as Jeff Mills and DJ Hell from 1992 until its closure in 1994. It was here at Elektro, one would find TV monitors playing videos made by Pflumm: short segments from recorded news, TV commercials, and brand logos looped. His work blurred the boundaries between art, electronic music and nightlife.

Steven Parrino appeared on the scene at the end of the 1980s with his unmistakable monochrome canvases which, following the painting process, were dismounted from their frame and subsequently re-stretched into scrunched, three-dimensional forms. The paintings jut, relief-like, from the wall, suggesting, in the words of Robert Nickas, “the crumpled body of a car after an accident… a clear sign of violence being served cold”. Alongside this, the artist used aluminium honeycomb panels from aircraft manufacture and canted them in such a way that they protruded into space as three-dimensional objects mimicking a gesture of destruction. “When I started making paintings, the word on painting was PAINTING IS DEAD. Over the last few years, flying with the major airlines has become a less than comfortable experience as airlines compete to squash as many passengers on-board their commercial flights, flying it seem has now become a “flying cans of sardines” experience. Of course there is the first-class alternative but for the wealthy amongst us is the hassle of the airport lounge and inevitable check in delays really worth the hassle – No and that is why the growth in the private jet industry has boomed.
u Flying by private plane is the ultimate upgrade: it’s a hassle free experience there’s no crowded cabins, never-ending check-in, and interminable delays in the departure lounge, instead after a simply phone call to reserve the plane, within a few hours it’s ready to fly you to whatever destination you require. It’s a frequent flier’s dream and surprising not as expensive as one would think, thanks in part to fractional ownership. Borne in the early 1980’s the notion of fractional ownership was dreamed up by Richard Santulli. Richard had bought a company called Executive Jet and noticed that many wholly owned private jets were underused, after analysing 20 years’ worth of records, Santulli deduced that it was possible to divide ownership of the fleet among many clients and still offer everyone guaranteed availability with as little as four hours’ notice. With the financial backing of Warren Buffet he launched the first (and largest) fractional ownership company: NetJets. Today fractional ownership or “jet sharing” is often likened to a timeshare, you buy a fractional share of a plane, from one-sixteenth up to a half and in return for the initial purchase price, plus a monthly management fee and a charge for every hour flown you’re guaranteed that the type of plane you’ve bought into will be available at short notice. The bigger your fraction, the more hours you can fly. Own a sixteenth and you’re entitled to 50 hours of flying time per year; a 50 percent stake will grant you 400 hours. Alternatively for those who only need limited access a private plane membership can be offered which for one upfront payment provides specified flying hours, with no capital cost and no commitment. Although fractional ownership makes private jets more affordable, it’s still not something everyone could afford so it’s worth shopping around for example, 50 hours of flying time in NetJets’ entrylevel craft, the Cessna Citation V Ultra costs approx. $500,000 ownership plus a monthly management fee of approx $9,500, and $1,950 per hourly rate this means your first years expenditure will cost in excess of $700,000. Compare this to Take Flight Aviation who operate in the UK and offer an entry level craft Piper Malibu Matrix for a capital outlay of £80,000 plus a monthly management fee of approx £1,120.00 for 50 hours of flying time and £121.00 fuel costs per hours you can see the costs vary dramatically. However, it’s worth noting when comparing ownership programs to check fleet sizes, and range Netjets has one of the largest fractional ownership fleets around the world with bases in the US and subsidiaries in Europe and China so for worldwide travellers this is indeed something to look out for whereby if you only need to shoot across the UK then Take Flight Aviation would indeed be your ideal solutions. When considering venturing into the private plane ownership I suppose you have to ask yourself one simple question: Compared to flying commercially, of course a private plane will always be more expensive, but “What is your time worth?”

THE OLDEST WINE HOUSE IN CHAMPAGNE
Established since 1584, by Pierre Gosset, Gosset is the oldest known wine house in Champagne founded in the Aÿ region. Previously a family ran business the first historical mention of the Gosset family is of Jean Gosset, Seigneur d’Aÿ, in 153. Gosset initially produced still red wines as sparkling wine didn’t make an appearance in the Champagne region until the 17th century. It was at the start of the 18th century and in the cellar of King Frederick of France, a connoisseur of Pierre Gosset’s wines, that the great history of Gosset as a Champagne producer began, a housethat remained family-run for 14 generations, until it was sold to the Cointreau family, owners of the Cognac house Pierre Frapin in 1994. Whilst the champagnes that it produces have never been plentiful in quantity, they have distinguished themselves with the consistently superb quality throughout the entire range of champagnes produced. Today under its new ownership, Gosset boasts production to one million bottles a year, maintaining its excellence thanks to its Chef du Cave JeanPierre Mareigner, the third generation of his family to serve the champagne house and who for the past 25 years has kept the secret of the wine’s elegance, freshness and balance. Gosset’s style has distinguished itself over the year’s thanks above all to its selection of grapes, which come from 120 hectares of vineyards that are 99% Grand Cru and sourced from the same 45 villages each year, with each village vinified and stored separately in the cellar to preserve its identity and character. A point of pride at Gosset is that they mature their wines for four years which is significantly longer than the 15 months that is legally required for non-vintage champagnes and after bottling, the champagne is then aged a further 6 months in their cool cellars before they permit this champagne to be sold. The champagne’s extraordinary expressiveness comes from the Pinot Noir grown within a 30km radius of Epernay. Its award winning winemaking process involves no malolactic fermentation which preserves the precious malolactic acid that gives the natural fruity and fresh aroma to the wine. Fermentation is done in steel vats and batonnage is a stylistic choice to avoid any sensation of oxidation, the coté reducteur of the yeast is maximized, while in the cuvée sans année some 30% is vins de reserve guarantee that flavour that has represented Gosset’s style over the centuries. 141

The Gosset Brut Excellence NV is a blend of 42% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir and 13% Pinot Meunier with a high proportion of reserve wines from previous vintages (almost 25%). It is the top cuvée, only produced in the best vintages. 2007 saw the relaunch of the Celebris range with the addition of two more champagnes and a change in style: Champagne Gosset Celebris Blanc des Blancs: Produced from 100% Chardonnay and with a dosage of 3.5g/l, this is a low dosage, extra brut champagne. A blend of four previous vintage wines this is a pure, rich and creamy champagne. Champagne Gosset Celebris Vintage Extra Brut has very low dosage. Celebris Rosé 2003: A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and up to 7% red wines from Ambonnay; it is the third ‘low dosage’ Champagne of Gosset.

This inconspicuous black bean has been credited with a rise in intellectualism and grandly influencing cultures around the world through the rise of coffee houses. It has also been accused of destroying indigenous cultures while becoming one of the most valuable commodities in the world.

Legend has it that coffee was discovered when a goat herder in Ethiopia noticed his animals were more rambunctious and frisky after eating the berries and leaves of a small shrub after testing it out for himself, the goat herder felt more energized and revitalised and thus the fascination with coffee began. Considered to be one of the most soothing types of beverage, its popularity has grown exponentially since its discovery a thousand years ago, mainly because it is a beverage that appeals to people of all ages, especially to those who require an energy boost. Coffee is also one of the most common produces of many different countries available in many different varieties, with variations in terms of quality, taste, flavour and of course price.
Given there are many different types of coffee brands and grades what sets these black beans apart? Well basically, it’s the difference between a pedigree and mongrel. Among the trade, coffee is divided into three categories: “high-grown mild” known commercially as Speciality “Brazilian” known as Premium and “Robusta” Regular. High-grown mild coffees demand the highest price and are those of superior quality. They grow at an altitude of over 2,000 feet and mostly between 4,000 and 6,000 feet. High-grown milds are picked by hand only when ripe and processed with care and attention to detail. “Brazilian,” as a trade term, refers to lower-grade coffees, and not necessarily to all coffees produced in Brazil. There are many wonderful quality coffees originating in Brazil, but as a trade term, “Brazilian,” represents lower quality coffees grown at lower altitudes on vast plantations and mass harvested. Speciality coffee is coffee grown under near-perfect conditions, processed very carefully and roasted in small batches to find the ideal flavour profile. There are 75 species of coffee although its two main types that are cultivated, Arabica and Robusta. The Arabica species alone has over 160 varieties, some of the most well-known are Typica, Bourbon, Acaia, Aatui, Caturra, Gesha. Blended or individual speciality coffee is meant to be savoured within a few weeks of roasting and is generally the most expensive coffee. Any dedicated specialty roaster will provide all the details of the farm, the bean varietal (or varietals if it’s a blend, as well as the percentages) and the cupping or tasting notes. To be considered Specialty Coffee, the green coffee beans that have been processed must have no more than five full defects in 300 grams of coffee. A defect is classified as; a broken, chipped, insect damaged or a water damaged bean. Premium Coffee, the next grade, is allowed no more than eight full defects in 300 grams will often be classed solely as Arabica beans. It is highly unlikely that the varietals will be known. Regular Coffee also known as Exchange is usually made out of the lower quality and cheaply available Robusta beans. Robusta beans have a quicker cycle of production and are thus available cheaper and more readily than Arabica. Exchange coffee will not be able to supply detailed tasting notes but rather will state a generic descriptor for the roast profile, e.g. espresso style roast, medium smooth mellow roast, and so on. 148 LUXURY LIVING

ARMAND DE BRIGNAC RELEASES A NEW LIMITED EDITION Armand de Brignac Blanc de Noirs Assemblage Two is a new limited edition of 2,333 bottles from the famed champagne brand purchased in 2014 by musician and entrepreneur Jay Z. The champagne is made from premier pinot noir grapes grown in Chigny-les-Roses, Rilly la Montagne, Verzy, and Verzenay. To create the cuvee, Armand de Brignac’s chef de cave Jean-Jacques Cattier and son Alexandre (10th and 11th generation champagne growers) relied solely on the first press of the pinot noir and combined 2008, 2009, and 2010 vintages. THE PERSONAL VISION The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, is but one example of a number of possible personal visions of a Rolls-Royce of the future. Indeed, in an evolution of the Rolls-Royce Bespoke experience of today, the customers’ taste will influence the exact design of his or her Rolls-Royce and how it will be configured. In the spirit of the great coachbuilt cars of the past, Rolls-Royce will create the chassis of the future, hand-built from the most advanced materials and powered by a zero emissions powertrain. Advanced manufacturing technologies will enable customers to involve themselves even more in the design of the shape, size and silhouette of their personal Rolls-Royce vision. The future customer will commission his or her own concept. Rolls Royce will design and manufacture this personal vision of each customer and make every Rolls-Royce a unique Bespoke masterpiece. THE EFFORTLESS JOURNEY For the 105 years since her creation in 1911, the Spirit of Ecstasy, modelled by sculptor and artist Charles Sykes, on Eleanor Thornton, has silently guided every Rolls-Royce and its owner through the momentous events of their lives. She has stood as an elegant presence at some of history’s most notable events. Today, the ‘Voice of Eleanor’ inhabits the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, delivering the dream of an effortless future to her owners. Digitally connected to every aspect of her owners’ lives and her surrounding environment, ‘Eleanor’ becomes their virtual assistant and chauffeur, freeing them of all effort and encumbrance. Imbued with her own artificial intelligence, she works intuitively to advise her owners on itineraries, schedules and options before they leave their residence, reminding about appointments and tasks and making suggestions to ease any anticipated impediments. She ‘brings’ the car around when her passengers are ready to travel and, whilst conveying her charges to their next destination, helpfully but discreetly makes suggestions and recommendations, briefing them ahead of their arrival so they are ready to ‘perform’. The 911 Carrera has been one of the world’s best-selling sports cars for decades and with its new offering the Porsche 911 Targa 4S offers enthusiasts a hint of nostalgia with a modern twist. The stylish yet effortlessly cool design plays homage to the Porsche of yesterday, based on the latest 911, known among Porsche-philes as the 991, the new Targa is a clear homage to the original design of 1965, with a brushed-aluminium roll bar and that distinctive, curved-glass rear window. The roof ’s operation, however, is thoroughly modern. With the push of a button, the rear glass lifts and glides backward along with what seems to be the entire rear end of the car. The trim at the top of the bar opens, the black-fabriccovered roof panel moves up and then back, nestling behind the rear seats, and the rear window whirs back into place. This automated metamorphosis takes 19 seconds. In the original Targa, this process required tools to release the top, getting out of the car, lifting the vinyl-covered top off the car, and then awkwardly folding the accordion-like roof to get it to fit in the front trunk.

u Power, performance, and personality have all been given a 21st century make-over in the 2017 Porsche 911 Targa 4S – with a new engine, revised chassis, and customizable driving modes, the already tantalizing Targa one of the marque’s most conspicuous convertibles just got better. Today’s Targa comes standard with four-wheel drive and can be had with either a 3.4-liter flat-six with 350 horsepower or the 4S’s 3.8-liter flat-six with 400 ponies. There’s no two-wheel-drive Targa, anymore. Its emissions have been reduced as well, due to a 12-percent increase in engine efficiency. Opened up the car catapults from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and tops out at 188mph. A boost given in part by the improved traction from the electro-hydraulically controlled all-wheel drive and 7-speed manual transmission as its standard translation of power

MAINTAINING A RETRO LOOK The outer profile comes unchanged from that of the previous model except for some mild tweaks here and there. At the front the Targa features smoother air intakes and slimmer 4-point daytime running lights. The vehicle also features redesigned headlights. On the sides, there are no recess covers on the door handle which has led to a cleaner look. At the back, the vehicle features a new decklid featuring vertical louvers as opposed to horizontal design on the outgoing model. The rear also features redesigned 4-point taillights linked by a single 3D light strip. The light strip illuminates the rear as well as accentuate the vehicles broader dimensions. To complete the unique Targa look is the signature open top soft roof which seems to wrap around the rear glass as well as feature the silver Targa-bar B-pillars. The roofline is more appealing than the topless Cabriolet. The roof panel is operated via the touch of a button and when opened, the roof is hidden behind the vehicle’s rear seats. Just like the exterior, the interior is a carryover of the outgoing model with minimal changes. The cabin features well-bolstered seats upholstered in premium leather, A 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, a centre console with numerous buttons, premium materials and a tachometer which is mounted at the centre of the gauge pod. Most updates are found on the Porsche Communication infotainment system which is offered as standard. It features a 7-inch multi-touch screen and a navigation system which allows hand-written inputs. The system is offered with a one year free subscription for Google Street View, internet radio, real-time traffic updates and remote data retrieval. The vehicle will also feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enables Smartphone integration. The new Porsche 911 Targa 4 borrows much from the 918 Spyder features and is scheduled to roll onto showroom floors by the beginning of April 2017, with a starting price of $122,600 / £102,072

With its sensual, emotional design (“hot”) and intelligent details (“cool”), the Vision MercedesMaybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles. The 2+2-seater pays homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés and consciously carries this tradition forward into the future. The coupé reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extreme way, following the Mercedes design philosophy of sensual purity. “Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool,” states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.” Reinterpretation of classic: Clearly defined contours and organically formed wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. Below this, the main body has a bulging, muscular look, extending across the entire flank. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille which was inspired by a pinstriped suit accentuates the front end. A further highlight is provided by the gullwing doors, a hallmark Mercedes design element which has been brought up to date. They underline the sporty character of the vehicle’s silhouette and feature innovatively designed aluminium trim.

LUXURIOUS 360° LOUNGE FEATURING NEW MATERIALS: THE INTERIOR DESIGN The interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a synthesis of intelligence and emotion and combines traditional Mercedes-Benz values with a new high-tech experience. The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge. The new “inside out” spatial design adds a particular touch of finesse. The sitting surface forms a horizontal, which transitions into the vertical of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing.
PERFECTION BLENDS WITH EXCLUSIVITY: Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group is made up of status-oriented customers. The current vehicles include the Mercedes-Maybach S 500 and S 600 models, launched in February 2015, which blend the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. A special protection version, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard, is the world’s first passenger car to meet the highest ballistic protection level for civilian vehicles, VR10. The most recent model is the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman with face-to-face seating. Launched at the beginning of 2016, it adopted the mantle of absolute top-of-the-line model.
DIPPING INTO THE FUTURE: Ever since Mercedes-Benz invented the car 130 years ago, driving has been a source of enjoyment and delight. With the increase in digitisation comes a simultaneous need for sustainable analogue solutions, the design of which has been emphasised and in places exaggerated in the concept car. In the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 this can be seen above all in the “hyperanalogue” instruments with needles and circular, crystal-look displays. The classic circular instruments are combined with deep displays and act as a reference to the unique history of Mercedes-Benz. In contrast, other display elements are digitally integrated into a continuous glass trim part. Information about the seat, for example, can be shown on this digital strip. Map information is also shown in the front area of the strip. Menu content is extended along a digital line which extends to the sides as far as the occupants, who can set their own content ergonomically using touch control. The luxury padded leather upholstery is a particular highlight. Its traditional look is combined with future technology here - the buttons which would normally be trimmed in leather have been replaced in the upholstered surfaces by miniature “body sensor displays”. These scan the passengers and monitor, for example, their vital functions. As a result, comfort features such as seat climate or the massage function, for example, can be activated or the seat settings adjusted to the passenger. The sensors embedded in the upholstery also record the incidence of light, the colour of the occupant’s clothing and the ambient temperature. This information can be used to trigger new, emotional lighting effects in the interior. The concept car aims to embody the ultimate in luxury, and this is underlined by the fact that the driver can switch to digital/autonomous mode. Another highlight is offered by the floating, transparent centre tunnel, which visualises the drive system’s electrical energy flow for the occupants.

His latest concept is a 229-foot yacht dubbed The Black Swan for its rich black exterior and graceful aesthetic. This beautiful super yacht is an ostentatious and bold design sporting powerful lines and dare I say a sinister appeal. The hull has a distinctive arrow shaped point, and a helicopter landing pad is placed prominently on its top deck, with its blend of enforced steel and aluminium this yacht is perfectly suited as the getaway vehicle for any bond villain!

EVERYTHING FOR A REASON Designed for those who demand style and luxury this concept yacht boasts state-of-the-art technology and a whole host of luxe amenities including a hidden lift which provides access to the helicopter platform on the top deck and an extended beach club with a pool. In the development of this design, Timur Bozca felt it was important to make as many references to land-based architecture as possible. For this reason he incorporated a glass wall that sits at an angle and extends from the main deck to the upper deck towards the aft. This allows for great views out over the extended beach club area where the pool fades away towards the stern.
AN INCREDIBLE FINISH Inside one of the main captivating factors is the profile of the triangular shape of the windows amidships. These different sized triangles allow light to penetrate into the vessel while simultaneously creating a sense that the superstructure is about to leap off from the hull. Black Swan is a design that embraces black throughout the concept using textures and finishes to differentiate between rooms in the interior. The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests across a master suite and six guest suites. General areas benefit from white furniture while cabins feature earthy tones such as brown.
MATERIAL & ENGINE To enhance the travel experience of the passengers, the luxury yacht is equipped with four engines that can generate a total power of up to 23,172 Horsepower. While the cruising speed is around the 20 knots mark, the top speed is a maximum of 28 knots. To keep the enormous engines working, the fuel capacity is a staggering 183,000 litres. Since waters from the sea are unfit for human usage, there is a water tank on board of 38,600 litres capacity. Marking the end of the Mediterranean yachting season the Voiles de Saint-Tropez held during the last week of September is one of the world’s most eye-catching yachts events where during its week long nautical fashion parade some of the most extraordinary modern sailing boats gather alongside some of the most beautiful and historic yachts in the world. Managed by the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez the organisers along with its president, André Beaufils, work tirelessly to manage what so epitomizes the unique spirit of; The Les Voiles de St. Tropez is a living showcase for maritime history, where old and new take to the seas and do exactly what they were built for ‘to harness the power of the wind.’
A RACE WAS BORN It was back in 1981 when a couple of Americans with a racing Swan named Pride, were hanging around St. Tropez. After competing in a number of local regattas they got to know a few people in the area. One day the owner of the yacht was talking of his recent successes when a twelve metre Swan came into port named Ikra. Asked if he could beat her, he replied “sure, why not, if she accepts the challenge.” After accepting the challenge the two skippers decide sail around the buoy of Nioulargo and race to the Club 55, a restaurant in the bay of Saint Tropez, at the beach of Pampelonne. The following year the two boats met again along with other friends who tagged along to join in the fun and launch their own challenges - and so a race was born.
ON THE WATER: A GAME FOR ALL! Today the races are separated into several categories; the Traditional class (classic yachts), the Modern class, the Esprit de Tradition class (modern traditional), the Wally class, and the 12 Meter America’s Cup Yachts class. The yachts that participate in the Voiles St. Tropez Regatta are some of the most famous sailing yachts in the world piloted by world class captains. These yachts will include J-Class, Swans, Maxiyachts, and more. Yachting enthusiasts from across the globe consider the Voiles St. Tropez Regatta a “can’t miss” race. The most distinguished and most popular event in the Voiles de St Tropez is La Grande Classe Trophy. This is a race that is for invitees only. Classic yachts that have distinguished themselves in the racing world will be invited to join in this event. La Grande Classe Trophy began in 2004 and is designed in the spirit of the English Regattas of history and with the chance to win the coveted Rolex Trophy, some of the world’s most impressive racers and sailing enthusiasts travel from all corners of the globe for a chance to get their hands on this a prestigious sailing prize.

LUXURY LIVING SPORT u THIS YEAR’S WINNERS AND RACERS: ROLEX: MOONBEAM IV Mickael Créac’h, boat captain and skipper of Moonbeam IV, held their place at the top of the leader board over the first three races, but were still dreading this last day of racing, which was forecast to be rainy with little breeze. Fortunately, a light S’ly breeze enabled the Race Committee to launch a short, technical sprint at the given time bound for Les Issambres. With Moonbeam IV fully powered up out of the starting blocks, to windward of the massive schooner Elena of London, she rounded off her week in style, leaving the rest of the fleet in her wake to take victory in the 13-mile race. And so it is that the much coveted Rolex Trophy went to the big Moonbeam (Fife 1914). The eldest of the Moonbeams, the No.3, otherwise known as Moonbeam of Fife (1903), secured a splendid second place, alongside the large Bermudan cutter, Halloween (1926), she too a Fife. BMW TROPHY: OPEN SEASON Dominating play with two superb victories and one 2nd place during the windwardleewards, the crew on the Wally 107 Open Season were fearful of the coastal race line up for the final day. Indeed, in this the 6th race of the week for Luca Bassani’s designs, Magic Carpet Cubed was the race favourite after an impressively consistent performance round the cans and offshore. However, with the medium breeze off Pampelonne, Michael Atkinson was a surprise victor on Open Season. Magic Carpet Cubed and Sir Lindsay Owen Jones took second place, while Piers Richardson and J One scored a very fine 3rd place, just pipping Tango to the post. EDMOND DE ROTHSCHILD GROUP TROPHY: TP 52 TEAM VISION. A battle royal reigned in this category with just one point separating the Russians on the TP 52 Frescia Rossa led by Vadim Yakimenko and the French on Team Visionskippered by Jean Jacques Chaubard on the eve of the final day of racing. Both gave their absolute but ultimately the French crew just did enough to take home the Edmond de Rothschild Trophy. Arobas, the Botin design, earned a much deserved third place in an extremely tough line-up of 24 boats.

TROUBLE AMONG THE MODERN BIG BOYS. Though the hierarchy for this very elite group of large Modern yachts may have originally seemed like a foregone conclusion, throughout the competition it has been turned on its head thanks to the excellent performances posted by the challengers and the medium conditions, which have left no room for error. The 100-foot Farr design Leopard managed to live up to expectations despite a blip early on, but her companions on the podium are somewhat unexpected: Velsheda, the 1933 J Class got the better of the other giant in her category, Lionheart (Hoek 2010) and ended up just one point behind Leopard. Logically Rambler88 was a big contender for third place, but it’s Lionel Péan’s VOR 70 S that takes it after a great week despite her disastrous rating. A YACHT OF DISTINCTION: MIGNON Mignon was built in 1905 in Norway to race in the 7 M JI category, a class with few takers that quickly disappeared. She’s a 16m45 wooden sloop designed by August Plym. Originally gaff rigged, the boat was transformed into a 7/8 Marconi back in 1911. The first owner was an English captain and the boat was based in the Solent. After a string of different owners and ports of registry, she was restored in Italy and then, more recently, Marseille, and has just started racing in the Mediterranean. Her name harks back to an enigmatic Goethe character familiar to Ambroise Thomas and Richard Wagner operas. 187

This was also the year that saw Sotogrande host the penultimate event on the high profile GC32 Racing Tour - joining Lake Garda, Marseille and Copa del Rey MAPFRE in Palma de Mallorca which was attended by the King of Spain, His Majesty Felipe VI. These have helped build Sotogrande’s reputation as a leading international regatta destination. The location and facilities offered by the new Spanish regatta venue, along with the chance to race on the waters that straddle two continents – Europe and Africa – with the Rock of Gibraltar as a backdrop, have proved attractive with yacht owners and leading sailors from around the world. Getting the opportunity to host two sailing World Championships plus a stop on the GC32 Racing Tour are a huge bonus to

Sotogrande. The GC32 catamarans represent the state of the art in yachting, as they ‘foil’ - sailing mostly above the water rather than through it. They are also among the fastest sailing yachts afloat, with a top speed of almost 40 knots (75kph) and are a close relation of the AC50 catamarans used in sailing’s oldest and most high profile event, the America’s Cup (which was hosted in Valencia in 2007 and 2010). Among the names who took part in this year’s La Reserva de Sotogrande Cup were the Monaco royal Pierre Casiraghi, who came sixth as the skipper of Malizia – Yacht Club de Monaco but walked away with the owner-driver trophy. Swiss sailor Sebastian Schneiter, fresh from the Summer Olympics in Rio, celebrated his 21st birthday while helming Team Tilt for the first time. And New Zealand Olympian Sharon Ferris-Choat notched up another first for Sotogrande as the only female in the tour, as part of Flavio Marazzi’s ARMIN STROM sailing team. But it was NORAUTO, helmed by New Zealander Adam Minoprio, who would prove victorious in this year’s event.

Golf was part of the driving force for the destination’s ambitious journey when, in 1964, Robert Trent Jones designed the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande - long regarded as one of his masterpieces and now ranked Spain’s second best course - in what was, back then, a largely uninhabited, unknown area of coastline near Gibraltar.
Since then, four more world-class courses have been created to make up Sotogrande’s golf offering, including The Real Club Valderrama, famed as the ‘Augusta of Europe’, which hosted the Ryder Cup and returned to the spotlight in Spring 2016 to host the Spanish Open.

While Sotogrande was becoming known as a premier golfing destination, it also began to build its reputation as the epicentre of European polo. The sport was first played at Sotogrande’s Santa Maria Polo Club in 1965 and it forms a major part of Sotogrande’s vision for the future, in a resort that is becoming an oasis for equine sport. The polo club’s biggest event is the Gold Cup, the culmination of the International Polo Tournament in August. It is considered Spain’s elite sporting event and it draws some 90,000 spectators each summer, among them royals, celebrities and business leaders from around 50 different countries. Ringing endorsement came earlier this year when Gold Cup became part of the World Polo Tour. It means Sotogrande is just one of three venues outside of Argentina to host a Grand Slam polo competition and places the Gold Cup on a par with the US Open and British Open. This promotion to polo’s super-league will ensure the biggest names in the game continue to be drawn to Sotogrande, among them the world’s number one, Adolfo Cambiaso, who joined in the celebration of the Gold Cup’s 45th edition this year playing for Team Dubai, as well as many of the polo club’s founding members. The polo club hosts at least 25 tournaments a year, and it is the only polo club in the world to have the capacity to host 32 teams on its nine fields, four of them in the World Class category. Each year, some 220 teams, 800 players and 2,500 horses flock to the polo club, which is as much the hub of social life in Sotogrande as the scene of some highly charged battles on the field. This year, that included spirited competition between 350 polo-playing lawyers from all round the world participants in the annual Lawyers Tournament, which is held each year in one of the world’s most spectacular polo clubs – and in 2016, that venue was Sotogrande’s Santa Maria. As the event’s founder, lawyer Eduardo Bérèterbide, comments: “Santa Maria is one of the best polo clubs in the world and always attracts the best players in the world. Here we interviewed Christian Scherrer, Tour Director for GC32 Racing Tour
WHY IS SOTOGRANDE’S LOCATION SO GOOD FOR SAILORS? Sotogrande is a good location for yacht races as it is well situated in the south of Spain and convenient for airports. For sailors the race area comes with the picturesque backdrop of Gibraltar and there is the potential for good gradient wind from the Atlantic or a thermal breeze during the summer months. As a venue Sotogrande is used to hosting major sports events in golf and polo so adding grand prix yacht racing to its sports portfolio is a natural progression. DOES THIS KIND OF REGATTA BRING A LOT OF OUTSIDE INTEREST TO THE DESTINATIONS IN WHICH THEY TAKE PLACE? With any sports event, the venue plays a key role and can be integral to the event’s success. Yachting is like Formula 1 and golf, in having unique courses from venue to venue. As a result the venue and, in particular, its weather, always feature more prominently in the ‘story’ of a regatta, and thereby generating more interest. HOW LARGE IS THE FOLLOWING? The following of the GC32 Racing Tour is principally European but there is also considerable interest in it globally. This is partly due to the ‘names’ that compete on it, including many top individuals in sailing who have won Olympic medals and Round the World races. It is also because GC32s are foiling catamarans that sail ‘above’ the water, are among the fastest sailing yachts in the world and are related to the type of boats used to compete in yacht racing’s biggest and oldest event, the America’s Cup (hence why several America’s Cup teams have been unofficially using the circuit for training). It is also worth pointing out that the demographics for those following sailing - the high net worth individuals and the international spread - are very similar to golf and, in particular, polo and so are a particularly good fit for Sotogrande.

u At the height of his success as a professional golfer, Manuel Piñero won two World Cups, the 1985 Ryder Cup, nine European tour titles and five Spanish championships. He describes Seve Ballesteros – with whom he won the 1976 World Cup – as the player “who did more than anyone for European golf ”, but Piñero himself is an icon of the sport, in Spain and internationally. Now aged 64, Piñero must look back at his career with immense pride. He admits that golf has enabled him to live “an incredible life” of the sort he couldn’t possibly have imagined when he was growing up. “My education is from the ‘university of life’ and golf gave me that opportunity. I have met extraordinary people through golf – heads of state, prime ministers, Richard Nixon, the King of Spain and his grandfather, Bing Crosby… With my background, through golf, with the opportunities I have had, even today I can go almost anywhere in the world,” he says. But he says all this without a hint of conceit – something that surely comes from the lessons learnt during Piñero’s childhood in rural Extremadura, and from parents who never knew such luxury. “I never heard them complain about their life or their hardships or ever say a bad word. They never argued in front of us,” he says. “My mother, who is now 90, cannot read or write, but my parents were the best teachers of life. They were always looking forward and teaching us to be positive. Life will always give you a chance to look forward.” It is a spirit that must have driven his father to take 10-year-old Manuel, his two brothers and their mother away from their home near Badajoz to start a new life in Madrid. “From birth to six I grew up in the middle of a forest, in a wooden house with no electricity or water. Later we moved to the village and then to Madrid with the aim of having a better standard of living,” says Piñero. Except the family had nowhere to live in Madrid, so they stayed in an abandoned house with a well. The following year, his father bought a plot of land and built a house by hand, “stone by stone, with the help of cousins in the construction business. As luck would have it, this house is now in one of the wealthiest areas of Madrid,” Piñero says.

It may have been an inauspicious start to life in the Spanish capital, but it was one that was to introduce the youngster to the sport that would change his life. “My uncle was caddying at a country club nearby and he suggested I go and make money by helping out on the tennis courts. The tennis courts were a further 2km walk from the golf course, which was already a 3km walk from where we lived. On the way on the first day, my grandmother and I passed someone playing golf. He told us that, by chance, he needed a caddy, so I stopped to help him,” Piñero recounts. And so his golfing career began. He was also a talented footballer and nearly switched his allegiance to the game, “but my father encouraged me to carry on with golf and at 16 I turned pro. I won my first tournament at 21,” he says. Success followed as an international player, and Piñero has used the benefit of his experience of playing on the best courses around the world to design various golf courses of his own. “I always think about the people who are going to play – the amateurs as much as the professionals,” he says. “Often the best courses are those that were designed 70 to 100 years ago. New courses generally are too difficult for amateurs with too many large undulations. When designing a course, you need to think about the technique needed to play these holes and well as showing off the natural beauty of the terrain.” His innate understanding of people, as much as golf, has also seen Piñero become a much-loved ambassador for La Reserva de Sotogrande, where he works with international clubs, has developed the golf clinic and is available for one-to-one training. As Captain of the men’s team in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, he hosted famous names at La Reserva in April, including José María Olazabal and Sergio García, to celebrate the return of golf to the Games after 112 years.

“When I visited the course in Rio, I thought I was in Melbourne. The architect wanted to replicate the brilliant design of the Australian course, and it worked,” says Piñero. “I would say the players who did not come to Rio realised they had made a mistake. The Olympics help to promote the sport and the number of people growing golf has grown incredibly. When I began in 1963, there were only 2,000 players in Spain; now there are 350,000. It is the sport of the 21st century and fundamental for quality tourism in the future, enabling hotels to have a yearround appeal.” As he approaches retirement age, Piñero has no plans to stop. “I want to help young people. I love teaching people how to play, whatever their age and skill. My role at La Reserva is partly about creating new connections and affiliations, but I also want to work with people who are new to the sport or already familiar with it and to teach them the skills to manage any course.” To be one of life’s great teachers is clearly in the Piñero blood.

BORN IN A BLIZZARD It had snowed all night and you would never have guessed there was a polo field beneath all that snow says Reto Gaudenzi, reminiscing about that Saturday, 26 of January 1985. For two years, he had worked tirelessly to make the first polo tournament on snow happen. He had convinced innovators, won over sceptics and ignored notorious grousers and now, his baby was about to be buried under a pile of snow. The snow had fallen hard and there was far too much for it to be compressed the town’s large and heavy snow blowers would simply have cracked through the ice on the lake, but Reto Gaudenzi would not let himself become disheartened and after calling on his fellow townsfolk by seven o’clock, two dozen locals had arrived to help clear the field with their small private snow-blowers. After six hours of strenuous effort the volunteers had finally managed to clear a field measuring a respectable 40 by 80 meters— and the world premiere of snow polo could begin.
WHERE ELSE BUT IN ST. MORITZ? The idea of snow polo was born some two years previously. Hanspeter Danuser, St. Moritz’s legendary tourism director, had quizzed Reto Gaudenzi on whether it would in fact be possible to play polo on snow. At first glance, there appeared to be no reason why it could not be done. So, Danuser went ahead and announced that St. Moritz would be holding the world’s first snow polo tournament.

Given that horse races had been held on the frozen lake since the early 1900’s as well as show jumping nearby expertise was on hand on how to prepare these grounds for an equestrian event as well as on how to ride a horse on snow competitively. Still, the rehearsal one year ahead of the tournament turned into an adventure “We didn’t have any polo ponies for the test match” says Gaudenzi, grinning at the recollection “Our riding horses might have been accustomed to snow, but they were freaked out by the polo sticks and the ball.” The rehearsal turned into a snow rodeo rather than anything else, but the team’s unwavering optimism prevailed and the tournament date was set for January 1985, but there was still a long way to go. Bringing four teams and their horses to the Engadin Valley was no minor feat—neither from a logistical nor a financial perspective. Potential sponsors were reticent; no one was eager to bear the burden of a premiere but Hanspeter Danuser was not going to give up at the first hurdle and being resourceful managed to win over Cartier’s country manager Horst Edenhofer, who took to the idea convincing his managers in Paris. This ongoing partnership has stood the test of resulting in a lasting collaboration spanning some 32 years.
BUT THERE WERE UNCERTAIN TIMES TO COME Reto Gaudenzi and his team continued to manage and organise the St. Moritz tournament for a further 15 years establishing the tournament as a key sporting and social events within the polo community. In 1999 he took a step back handing over responsibility to his successors and looking forward to seeing his initiative flourish further. But after its 2014 edition, having lost both organisers and financial backers, the tournament faced an uncertain future. Reto Gaudenzi, who by now was organising polo tournaments around the world, immediately stepped into the breach “We were distressed by the uncertain future of this top event in St. Moritz’s social and sportive calendar”, said Gaudenzi. Together with other Swiss polo enthusiasts, he founded Evviva Polo St. Moritz Ltd and made his comeback as organiser of his tournament. Looking back Gaudenzi reflects; It would have been impossible to carry out this type of tournament for some 32 years without support from others; sponsors, benefactors, the city council, the tourism organisations and, not to forget the myriad of volunteers who have each contributed in their way towards making this event happen year on year. “Out of the blizzard into the world we managed to create the very first polo match played on snow. That cold Saturday morning in January 1985, with its heavy snowfall, making for minimal visibility and horses treading in deep snow, on a field five times smaller than today set the ground work for what we have today and event that has been adopted around the world.” The 33rd edition of the St. Moritz Tournament will be held from 27th to 29th January 2017.

Who knows? The second project is a CD. The title, Sign, means for me the artistic symbol of Atrium Philosophy, and it will be available in January 2017 as a gift for our artists and visitors. ART CURATING Today, art takes center stage in luxury homes as never before. New urban developments are being planned with expansive wall space and art-friendly windows that invite city views while blocking out the UV rays that can compromise fine paintings. And that’s just part of the artful-property story. In a private home, entire wings may be devoted to an owner’s art collection, affording their valued acquisitions the dedicated space they deserve. Elaborate museumquality hanging systems with wires and pulleys assure that collections are optimized, re-grouped, and refreshed as new acquisitions enhance the overall motif (without those annoying nail holes). “Art is the new vernacular in luxury housing. Years ago, when people started remodeling for resale, everyone had a pool, so a tennis court became the new status. In doing so, they are serving a public good: opening their passion and vision to widespread appreciation and education while also maintaining greater control over the entirety of their collections. While international laws differ, donors can expect to receive tax relief if their private museum serves a clear educational purpose by making the works available for public viewing, research, or traveling exhibitions. By sharing rare and hidden treasures, the philanthropic payback is immeasurable. “Considering what a private passion book collecting is, libraries are in fact very revealing. There is a fascinating tension between the private nature of a closed book and the public face of titles on spines which reflect the collector’s very essence. BOOKS Those who believed that the decline of print would result in a move away from in-home libraries were a little extreme. While the long-term impact of e-books is still to be seen, in-home libraries are showing up in more and more luxury homes, a testament to the enduring value of words committed to the page and beautifully bound for the ages.
CARS To dismiss these showcases as a garage is like saying a Tesla is energy efficient. While true, the definitions veer wide of the mark, failing to fully capture the innovation, the luxury engineering, and the elegant presentation. Infused with inspiration and artistry, high-end car galleries pay homage to the automotive art form. Upscale garages may house a handful of vintage autos or up to as many as 60 cars. Some are functional (with lifts, bays, and a full workshop) or serve solely as a display venue. In most, however, the car collection doubles as an art installation. These ultimate garages include rotating turntables, state-of-the-art lighting to show off the exquisite chrome and paint jobs, not to mention a fully appointed décor. Common motifs are retro, with vintage gas pumps and diners, to the ultra-modern, rivaling any new-car showroom. Entertainment centers are increasingly de rigueur—with wet bars, screens, and other upscale appointments that allow owners and guests to enjoy an evening of camaraderie in the presence of four-wheeled masterpieces. “These gentlemen’s retreats can be quite elaborate. I have seen a poker room with the air pulled out and refreshed every 90 seconds. An office/theater with free seating and a desk facing the screen, pin lights in the ceiling subtly illuminating it. There was a 12-car underground garage with an elevator to take one car up onto the main level of the house for display on a large stage behind glass. As a car collector myself, I understand this. THE MASCULINE TOUCH Men are shaping the luxury home amenity landscape as never before: From intimate retreats for smoking cigars, playing poker, or enjoying a prized rifle collection to elaborate rooms with billiards as the centerpiece.
BILLIARDS A pool or billiards table can be a work of art. Little wonder, then, that they now command prime space in an estate’s main living areas.
CIGAR ROOMS The same cannot be said for other fraternal nooks, which are happily relegated to intimate spots on the estate property, rather than a main living area. Take the cigar room, for instance. One person’s “perfume” can wrinkle another family member’s nose. A cigar’s aroma is often an acquired taste. That’s why cigar rooms are intentionally located in an estate’s out-of-the-way corners and are equipped with elaborate filtering systems to scrub the smoke before extracting it outside. These smoking dens are designed with rich paneling, leather furnishings, wooden blinds, and stone fireplaces—stereotypically male materials that don’t absorb smoke in the same way cloth and upholstery does. In cigar rooms, upscale humidors, cutters, lighters, and ashtrays are, of course, de rigueur.
SPORTING DISPLAYS Likewise, masculine enclaves such as poker rooms (with sports memorabilia front and center) or rooms showcasing, say, a rifle or hunting collection, are frequently tucked away on the estate. The elegant designs of these retreats prevail, with comfort being the main design driver, and conversation pits to encourage taletelling and bonding among friends. “It is no longer about storage, but rather entertainment and enjoying your collection with like-minded friends. My client is passionate about his guns. You wind down a fantastic staircase with walls of stone to an area with the wine cellar, a wet bar, and the secure and paneled gun room with a seating area. WINE Gone are the days of descending into the wine cellar, eventually emerging with dusty prized vintages to share with guests in the main living areas. More recently, cellars have evolved into tasting rooms for small-scale gatherings. Today’s cellars, while still intimate venues, have been upgraded to host dinners, with the family’s wine collection on full display. LED lighting artfully shows off the bottles without the damaging heat. An indoor wall fountain or waterfall can provide needed humidity as well as serve as a statement piece. Dishwashers have been installed to clean stemware in situ, alongside heating ovens to keep each course of the meal warm. Some of the features of an outdoor kitchen, a trend of years past, are going underground. Alternatively, wine cellars aren’t necessarily even in the cellar anymore. Wines can now be displayed on the main floor behind glass wall, allowing a full appreciation of the scope of a collection—yet in a controlled environment—so that guests need not cope with the chilly temperatures that wines require. “Many of today’s wine collectors are not only looking to maximize storage of their wines, they are also seeking out tailored décor to display their collection artfully while complementing their home’s interior design. The Valencian practice of Fran Silvestre shares a delight in the abstract and architectonic possibilities of solids and voids. Silvestre’s white-walled architecture is never plain, but always spectacular - an abstract canvas for living. Jan Jensen, founding partner of the Oslo firm of Jensen & Skodvin, creates buildings with a strong connection to their environment, emphasising natural materials and traditional craft in a modern shell. Marcio Kogan, founder of Studio Mk27 in São Paolo, has a similarly close relationship with materials and place, while the Swedish architect Andreas MartinLöf creates houses that frame their spectacular surroundings. Sotogrande will provide the perfect canvas for these seven skilled practitioners. Each house will share a sense of grand scale and great occasion, translated through seven very different architectural approaches but all including spacious entertaining rooms and living areas, as well as facilities like pools, wine cellars, gyms and media rooms, staff accommodation, ample parking and studios or art rooms. THE HISTORY Woolmers Park Estate is one of Britain’s most prestigious and expensive country estate to be placed up for sale this year. A survivor of a group of country estates around Hertford, a small county town, developed as gentlemen’s seats in the 18th and 19th Centuries, Woolmers Park has managed to remain in splendid condition. Its name derives from the Woolmer family which is recorded in the area in the 13th Century. John Woolmer is mentioned in documents from 1285-1289 and Thomas Woolmer in 1358. In the Middle Ages the land was attached to the Hertingfordbury property of John of Gaunt – ‘Time honoured Lancaster’ – and descended with the Duchy of Lancaster to The Crown. The present house, which stands atop a gentle slope overlooking the River Lea, was built in the 1730s and by 1800 it had passed to Samuel Whitbread the Younger, of the brewing dynasty, who enlarged and consolidated it by exchange of land with a neighbour, Lord Cowper of Panshanger. According to the current sales particulars, the first nationally famous person to own Woolmers Park was the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, the so-called ‘Canal Duke’, who bought the estate in 1801 as a base from which to oversee a project designed to link the River Lea, a tributary of the Thames, with the River Ouse. He employed the county surveyor and architect James Lewis to rebuild the main house, which was further remodelled and extended by the Duke’s successor, Sir Gore Ouseley, an entrepreneur, scholar and protégé of Wellesley in India, British Ambassador to Persia and foreignpolicy adviser to the government of the day. He purchased the estate in 1821 and was deemed to be the most accomplished of all owners of Woolmers Park. While Sir Gore Ouseley resided at Woolmers Park, he entertained many prominent figures including the Duke of York and The Duke of Wellington who visited by carriage from London with the Prime Minister to discuss the Middle Eastern political situation with the ex-ambassador. Ouseley’s successor was William Herbert Wodehouse from Staffordshire, who bought Woolmers in 1842 and lived there for 60 years. He, too, was a scholar-squire, educated at Eton and Oxford. In 1927, when country estates all over England were being broken up and sold off, Woolmers was offered for sale in 50 lots, but the late Queen Mother’s parents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, stepped in and bought it as a whole. They spent the best part of the year there, right up to the outbreak of the Second World War, only going to Glamis Castle, the family seat in Scotland, between July and September, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret often visited and stayed with their grandparents at Woolmers Park. In 1949 the estate was acquired by a Chartered Surveyor and businessman, Lascelles Arthur whose passions in life were polo and hunting. Here ate Woolmers Park he founded the Hertfordshire Polo Club an established polo dynasty notably through his son, John, and daughter, Claire Tomlinson, who was the first woman to play English high-goal polo. The club drew the game’s elite, including The Prince of Wales, who played there during his time as a Cambridge undergraduate. Polo remained the focus of life at Woolmers Park until its sale in 1997, when the estate was put on the market by Lucas’s widow, Ethel. It was purchased by Mr Godbold, a successful entrepreneur who lived locally. Over the last 19 years, Mr Godbold and his family have embarked upon a major renovation project improving not only the estate and its Grade II*-listed mansion but also developing the Hertfordshire Polo club facilities which now include four fields, stick-and-ball grounds, all-weather arenas and five-star stabling. 260 LUXURY LIVING

LAWYERS TOURNAMENT 2016 Santa Maria Polo Club this year joined the podium this year in hosting the Lawyers Tournament. Polo players of the world’s legal fraternity came to Sotogrande to play against each other in six teams.

Today, the Lawyer’s Polo Association is composed of more than 350 lawyers, who share a passion for polo and horses. “Our objective is to generate a network of sports, and personal and professional relationships between lawyers through polo. We chose Santa Maria in Sotogrande because it is one of the best polo clubs i the world and always attracts the best players in the world, explains Eduardo Bérèterbide, founder of Lawyer’s Polo and lawyer at the firm Shearman & Sterling LLP, Paris.

Following a gala event at La Reserva de Sotogrande golf club, the competition continued on the fields of Los Pinos de Santa MarĂa Polo Club with St Mortiz Polo team winning the 2016 Lawyers Polo Cup.
Lawyers from from Argentina, Austria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Malaysia, Portugal, Slovakia, Singapore, Switzerland, Venezuela, United Kingdom and United States took part in this year’s Lawyers Polo tournament.
