Known for her roles in The Hunger Games and Winter’s Bone, Jennifer Lawrence is heralded as one of the most promising young actresses working today.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Jennifer Lawrence was the younger of two brothers Ben and Blaine, her parents Gary owned a concrete construction firm her mother Karen runs a children’s camp.

J

ennifer, known to her friends and family as “Jen”, knew she wanted to be an actress from an early age and at the age of 14 she persuaded her parents to take her to New York City to find an agent, she had dabbled in modelling so in the spring of 2004, she travelled to New York City to attend a few auditions with talent and modelling agencies.

Jennifer has never taken any drama classes or lessons for acting and after a nervous first cold read, the agents told her mother that “it was the best cold read by a 14- year-old they had ever heard”, and tried to convince her mother that she needed to spend the summer in Manhattan. After leaving the agency, Jen was spotted by an agent in the midst of shooting an H&M ad who asked to take her picture. The next day, that agent followed up with an invite to the studio for a cold read audition. Again, the agents were highly impressed and strongly urged her mother to allow her to spend the summer in New York.

As fate would have it, she did spend that summer in New York City and appeared in commercials such as MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” and played a role in the movie, Devil You Know with Lena Olin. Soon after, she and her family moved to Los Angeles, where she had small roles on the series Medium, Monk and Cold Case, before landing a part on the TBS series The Bill Engvall Show. While working on the series, she also appeared in feature films like The Poker House and The Burning Plain alongside Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger.

After starring in two hard-hitting indie dramas, Lawrence auditions for the lead in Winter’s Bone. Wary of her good looks, producers initially reject her for the gritty role of Ree Dolly, a poor-as-dirt teen who hunts down her meth-dealing dad, Jennifer eventually got the part but in an interview with People magazine she recalls “The

next day I turned up at the casting again, I was a bit like a psychopath but thankfully not brushing my hair or washing my face did the trick.”

With the release of Winter’s Bone, the virtual unknown received rapturous reviews. Winter’s Bone may have been a small film, but Lawrence’s performance was world class. Lawrence received critically acclaimed earning herself nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Opportunities continued to pour in, and in 2011 Lawrence appeared in The Beaver alongside Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and Anton Yelchin, she followed this up with box-office appeal starring in the blockbuster comic-book franchise X-Men: First Class appearing as scantily clad, shapeshifting mutant Mystique.

Now a growing star Lawrence embarks on her first major studio lead role in the film adaptation of a novel

by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games. Heralded as the new Harry Potter-meets-Twilight, the project raises Lawrence to leading lady status.

The Hunger Games rakes in more than $25 million during its first 10 days at the box office, and Lawrence is asked to reprise her role for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in 2013.

2013, has got off to a good start for this young and talented lady, returning to her indie roots Lawrence kicks the new year off with Silver Linings Playbook, costarring Bradley Cooper. The film garnered several award nominations; including a Golden Globe nomination (best actress in a comedy or musical) which she won. She also received a SAG Award, as well as an Oscar.

Upcoming proJects: Lawrence apparently doesn’t let the grass grown under her feet. In November of this year Lawrence will again light up our screens with her reprisal of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games with the second adaptation of the novel from The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, scheduled to be released with the third and final Hunger Games book; The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 set to be released in November, 2014 with Part 2 set to be released the following year in November 2015.

This will be followed in December with the drama film American Hustle, based on the FBI Abscam Operation. The film will see Lawrence star alongside stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper & Amy Adams.

Then after two years Lawrence will also be reprising her role as Mystique in X-Men: Days of Future Past with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in the spring of 2014.

hile following the line of its forbearer, obviously the Concept 90 has been sexed and sleeked up.

The bodywork is of handworked aluminium, the giant halogen lamp of the 1975 model (which is when Daytona Orange was introduced) has gone LED, and the front engine cover, valve covers, exhaust and wheels have been made with a contrast-cut milling process.

BMW Concept Ninety There is hardly another motorcycle manufacturer that can boast such a longstanding and successful heritage as BMW. The BMW R90S likewise has cause to celebrate because the BMW Motorrad design icon turns 40 this year. As a tribute to both these anniversaries, the BMW Group is presenting a very special model at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013: the BMW Concept Ninety.

40 years of the BMW R90S Back in 1973, BMW unveiled its flagship model in the “Stroke Six” range to the global public. Boasting a top speed of just over 200 km/h (124 mph), it was one of the fastest production bikes of its day and went on to claim numerous prizes in a variety of race series. Even when parked it radiated a powerful appeal: for the first time in the development process of a motorcycle, a designer had forged a successful alliance of form and function while creating the first motorcycle ever to feature a front fairing as standard.

Together with its sporty tail end and striking Daytona Orange paintwork, it endowed the BMW R90S with an unmistakable identity. The design of this bike pointed the way forward, and it wasn’t long before other manufacturers were gracing their motorcycles with aerodynamically honed front and rear fairings.

Today the erstwhile trendsetter is one of BMW’s design icons. “The BMW R90S hails from an era in which bikers were regarded as outlaws”, comments Edgar Heinrich, Head of BMW Motorrad Design.

“There was something rebellious about it – it was fast, loud and wild. Pure emotion. And it has retained its fascination to this day”.

Today BMW motorcycles stand for perfection and function. The BMW Concept Ninety takes to the stage as a sporty boxer with a battery of sophisticated details. Its basic proportions clearly take their cue from the forebear that inspired this concept: the fairing, tank, seat and tail instantly signal its family bond with the BMW R90S. The BMW Concept Ninety also picks up on the demarcation of the bike’s 62

proportions that was a hallmark of the time. The upper ergonomic and aerodynamic bodywork is visually separated from the black engine and chassis. The bodywork is hand crafted from aluminium. Its brushed areas can be seen in the tinted areas of the front fairing and tank, as well as at the tail. The rich orange shade of the BMW Concept Ninety is also a nod to the legendary Daytona Orange paintwork of the BMW R90S. The BMW Concept Ninety delivers a very sporty interpretation of the front fairing. But whereas halogen was technically cutting-edge in the BMW R90S era, contemporary LED elements light up the face of the BMW Concept Ninety, honouring its ancestor with a round headlamp design.

Seamlessly mounted behind it, the dynamically shaped tank ensures an optimal connection between rider and machine. Further along, the tank and seat melt harmoniously into each other.

A steadily ascending line from the handlebars to the tail creates a slight wedge shape, lending the BMW Concept Ninety an almost ready to attack stance when viewed from the side.

Below the bodywork sits the air-cooled flat-twin boxer engine, this section of the bike symbolises concerted power, precision and performance.

The mechanics and technology as a whole are purposely rendered visible and reflect a keen attention to detail.

Custom parts made by Roland Sands As the observer’s gaze gradually penetrates this motorcycle, more and more details are revealed.

Many of the high-quality parts of the BMW Concept Ninety hail from custom bike specialists Roland Sands Design in California. In close collaboration with BMW Motorrad Design, the Roland Sands Design team designed and manufactured these parts specifically for the BMW Concept Ninety.

The mechanical parts and engine area, above all, bear the Roland Sands imprint. Key highlights include the front cover of the engine and the valve covers, that got painstakingly milled, as well as the exhaust system.

The parts were milled using a contrast cut process, which strikes an alluring contrast to the black mechanical components. This technology was also applied to the rims, whose classic design recalls the racing triumphs of the BMW R90S in the 1970’s.
