We are experiencing a complex, global challenge. Only our choices can make the difference, turning a crisis into a tremendous opportunity. In a sea of uncertainties, the only certainty is that organic marks the right course: that towards ecological transition. Vetrina Bio Bank offers insights, motivation and inspiration through the “Navigating complexity” megatrend, in the words of the influential French sociologist and philosopher Edgar Morin. Through the 20 Bio Bank Trends, the new economies advocated by Morin are outlined: the green, health, public good and solidarity economies. As well as through the showcase of more than 130 products, including foodstuffs and cosmetics, which largely reflect the trends of the year. Last but not least, entire worlds are opened up through the stars of the 6 Bio Bank Stories, which include pioneers who started from nothing, generational transitions, links with the land, innovation and the supply chain, in its various forms.

The megatrend: Navigating complexity

«In this global world we are faced with the challenge of global thinking, which is the challenge of complex thinking. We are living through the beginning of a beginning. What must develop is a green economy, a health economy, a public good economy, a solidarity economy, a new education». This is how Edgar Morin, French sociologist and philosopher, describes our time and the challenge of complexity, which must be understood and tackled by learning to navigate a myriad of uncertainties. The only certainty is that organic has been doing its part for decades by setting the right course: that towards ecological transition.

The Bio Bank Trends of 2022 reflect the green economy with a preference for products that reduce our ecological footprint: vegetarian and vegan foods, new plant-based meat and cheese substitutes, local, regional or Italian foods, solid cosmetics and powder detergents. Yet there is also a focus on waste and orientating our purchases towards products

with sustainable packaging, without too much packaging and without plastic. The health economy encapsulates products that support the immune system, such as fermented foods or foods rich in vitamins, minerals or a particular nutrient, superfoods, products free from certain ingredients and those with a few, simple ingredients. In cosmetics, pure, multivitamin and dermoprotective active ingredients are favoured.

In the public good economy, on the other hand, we find the protection of biodiversity, the rediscovery of ancient varieties and the improvement of soil fertility through organic and biodynamic farming.

Lastly, within the solidarity economy we have fair trade products, products free from the gangmaster system or bribes, social agriculture and the prison economy. These are the four faces of the new economy, which can also be found in organic products, including food and cosmetics, with their ability to bring together multiple qualities.

Across the board trends

#Veg vegan & vegetarian

Those choosing vegetarian or vegan products do so for ethical, environmental and health reasons. The 2022 Eurispes Report found that 5.4% of Italians identify as vegetarian and 1.3% as vegan, making up a total of 6.7%. But plantbased consumption is also on the rise among the rest of the population, seeking to reduce animal products, with an increasing focus on plant-based food and cosmetic choices. Not a fleeting trend, then, but a growing and transversal one.

#Local producers & regions

Local products represent an increasingly strategic choice in a climate dominated by scarcity of raw materials and spiralling prices. And organic has become a model for food self-sufficiency. At the heart of this lies the short supply chain, local areas promoting territorial and regional produce, and product chains involving small producers working together. Both in food and cosmetics. And, naturally, the rise of organic made-in-Italy continues, and is a driving force on foreign markets.

Across the board trends

#GreenPackaging plastic-free, recyclable

As we emerge from the disposable era, one thing remains certain: on a planet with limited resources, the best waste is no waste. It is time for a circular economy. Maximum attention therefore to the packaging, guided by the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. According to the Nomisma Packaging Observatory, 28% of Italians shop based on recyclability (62%), sustainable materials (59%), and the absence of excess packaging (46%) and plastic (41%) in packaging.

#AntiWaste zero rubbish

With the return to social life and eating out, Italians are wasting more food. According to the 2022 Waste Watcher Report, we throw away 595 grams of food per head per week (+15% compared to 2021). But – in part as a result of the economic crisis – the issue continues to receive a lot of attention, driving the supply of imperfect but perfectly good vegetables, single-portion packs to avoid leftovers, and smaller cosmetics packs that can be used before the expiry date.

#Fermented live, active

Fermentation continues to play a key role, to nourish body and skin. Fermented foods aid digestion, promote gut health, strengthen the immune system and boost the metabolism. Cosmetics featuring fermented fruit, plants and herbs have a symbiotic relationship with the skin, moisturising and protecting it, strengthening its metabolism and improving its texture. Prebiotics and probiotics are also growing in popularity, both in food and cosmetics.

#InPlaceOf plant-based substitutes

Plant-based meat, milk, and cheese substitutes are no longer the exclusive domain of vegetarians and vegans, but rather enjoyed by all. As confirmed by a recent study by Bva-Doxa, consumers prefer them not only for their nutritional value, flavour and consistency similar to the original, but also for their very small environmental footprint. An innovation led and driven by the organic companies that succeed in inventing entirely new foods, going beyond the barrier of imitation.

#AncientVarieties a common good

Food trends trends

Ancient, local, and forgotten varieties are a true common good. They are more rustic and resistant, are better adapted to our local area, and represent a source of biodiversity, a trove of tastes and traditions, and a wealth of nutritional properties. Hence their rediscovery and promotion: from vegetables like Jerusalem artichoke, purple carrots and yellow "datterini" tomatoes, to fruit like quince, jujube and carob, and grains like spelt, Khorasan, Cappelli and Timilìa.

#Biodiversity nature's capital

Biodiversity – in terms of genetics, species and ecosystems – is key to variety of life on earth in its various forms, and is part of nature's capital, together with air, water and soil. Biodiversity loss means food and energy insecurity, more natural disasters and a decrease in social health. Each of us protects biodiversity when we choose a plant-based diet, local and seasonal products, and foods that re-embrace and promote ancient varieties and autochthonous species.

#Biodynamic beyond organic

Despite attacks aimed at discrediting biodynamic, like those initially levelled at organic, these products are in ever greater demand in Italy and abroad. Now that many conventional companies have branched out into organic, numerous organic operators are shifting to biodynamic as a mark of higher quality. The Associazione per l’Agricoltura Biodinamica estimates 4,500 biodynamic operators in Italy. But only 550 companies have achieved the Demeter certification.

#Ethical fair & just

Consumers are increasingly focused on the social responsibility of companies, on values, and on the entire history of the products. Environmental protection is no longer enough. Respect for people is also required, represented by social and economic justice. This means fair earnings and dignified work, adherence to fair trade principles, inclusion through social farming, standing up against the mafia and opportunities for redemption through prison work programmes.

#FreeFrom gluten, lactose, sugar

The list of "free from" foods remains long, a reflection of both necessity – in response to allergies, food intolerances, and specific medical conditions – and dietary and lifestyle choices. And so labels and packaging highlight what is missing. According to Osservatorio Immagino 2022-1, the most common products for intolerances are those free from gluten, then lactose, milk, yeast, and egg. "Free from" products include those without palm oil, sugars, and salt.

#Richin protein & fibre

Among foods naturally rich in a particular nutrient, or fortified, those most in demand include (in order of importance) wholemeal foods and those rich in fibre, protein, vitamins, calcium, probiotics, Omega 3, iodine, magnesium, potassium and zinc, as identified by Osservatorio Immagino 2022. In particular, sources of prized plant-based protein include algae, fruit, vegetables, seeds, grains, and pulses, with new varieties constantly arriving on the market.

#Superfood fruit, seeds, spices...

Superfoods continue to feature in a huge number of recipes: yoghurt with exotic fruits, specialities with nuts such as almonds and cashews, pasta and ovenbaked products with linseed and hemp, drinks featuring cereals like oats and quinoa, energy bars featuring berries such as cranberries and goji berries, spices like turmeric and ginger everywhere. Then the amazing seaweeds, microalgae and the highly versatile Jerusalem artichoke. Superfoods also abound in cosmetics.

#ImmuneDefence vitamins and minerals

The impact of the pandemic and longterm effects of Covid have seen attention shift like never before to the crucial role played by the immune system, and the relationship between the effectiveness of its response to external attacks and the health of the gut microbiota. This has led to increasingly health-conscious shopping baskets, with a demand for foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, that stimulate, strengthen, and build immune defences.

A decisive turn away from ultra-processed foods, the enemies of cardiovascular health, among other things. Now, consumers are embracing foods with fewer, simple, recognisable ingredients, processed using natural and innovative techniques, which respect the many nutritional properties of organic ingredients. Increasingly conscious consumers are seeking "clean" recipes, "gentle" processes and transparent information.

#Basic simple, essential

Cosmetics & Co trends

#PureActives targeted, high-performing

High-performing and effective, pure actives have become key players in the facial skincare routine: hyaluronic acid, plant-based collagen, phytoretinol, vitamin C, co-enzyme Q10 and others. They are popular for their super-fine texture and targeted action: anti-wrinkle, antioxidant, lifting effect, firming, and pigment control. But above all for their versatility of use: pure, combined with each other or mixed into serums and face creams, to meet the needs of the skin.

#Dermoprotectives hydrate, nourish

For the face, lips, hands and body, and for the sensitive skin of mothers and children, dermoprotective cosmetics are nothing short of food for the skin. They serve to hydrate, nourish, soften, soothe, protect, and prevent changes caused by the external environment. Products for daily use abound, with a wide range of creams on the market, as well as gels, balms, oils and butters. Dermoprotective cleansing products are also available.

#Multivitamins caring for skin

Multi-vitamin creams and serums, in which vitamin C plays a key role, offer a true skin care solution, with a range of beneficial effects: helping to maintain skin tone and elasticity, preserve the lipid barrier, protect against damage caused by exposure to the sun and prevent premature ageing, as well as performing moisturising, antioxidant and seboregulating action. Vitamins give skin a rested appearance and have a clarifying and illuminating effect.

#Solids sustainable to the core

No plastic on the outside, no water on the inside, easier to preserve, longer life, more concentrated, anti-waste thanks to better quantity dosing, and handy not only at home, but also on the go. Introducing the new solid cosmetics, good for the skin and the environment, with natural and organic ingredients and a specific pH for each part of the body. Not standard soaps, but compact products for the face, body and hair, in recyclable packaging, such as cardboard and aluminium.

Organic and biodegradable powder detergents, for laundry, dishes and more, are true friends of the environment, our skin and our pockets. Formulated using ingredients of plant-based and mineral origin, they are more concentrated and effective, without optical brighteners. They do not contain water, eliminating the need for preservatives. They are easy to dose, preventing waste. Finally, they are lighter and take up less space, thus reducing transport and pollution.

Entire worlds are opened up, with pioneers who started from nothing, generational transitions, links with the land, innovation and the supply chain, in its various forms. Caroline Egger takes the reins from her father Karl, a pioneer of organic who founded La Selva in 1980. He travelled from Munich to Maremma to pursue the dream of good food in a fertile land; she trained at the business headquarters in Munich, but could not wait to return to Maremma, the production centre for the company's organic preserves, inspired by Tuscan tradition. Annarita Massarotto and her brother Marco, meanwhile, run Nature Med, founded in Calabria by their father Antonio, who led the impressive revival of the declining liquorice-growing business. Through technological innovation and commercial development, organic Calabrian Liquorice Pdo can be found all over the world. Flavio Sacco transformed a passion

for food fermentation into an innovative start-up, founded with two partners near Bologna to produce fermented vegetables that feed the gut microbiota, vital for the immune system. Maria Luisa Terrenzio of the Prima Bio cooperative, founded by her father in Puglia, has developed the closed supply chain for organic preserves with the ethical supply chain against illegal exploitation of workers and has embraced innovation with the first field-grown nickelfree crops. Shanti Bösh – who turns 30 this year like Remedia, the company founded in 1992 by parents Lucilla and Hubert in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines to grow and process officinal plants for organic remedies and cosmetics – shares a story of generational transition and challenge. For Luigi Panaroni, who founded La Saponaria in Pesaro with Lucia, the original idea behind the project of life and work remains its guiding force: to formulate and produce artisanal, organic and ethical cosmetics.

Pioneers in organic preserved produce from Munich to Maremma

To rediscover the flavour of the food and the fertility of the soil: this is what motivated my father Karl to leave Munich for Tuscany and purchase the first 7 hectares to grow and process organic fruit and vegetables. The business, which has grown year by year since 1980 thanks in part to the decision to focus on the German market, occupies now over 600 hectares, including the company laboratory, the Castagneto Carducci plant, and the cellar in Magliano in Toscana. The business hub is in Munich, where I worked for three years until 2017. But the production centre is in Maremma, where I was born and raised, and which is home to the organic specialities inspired by Tuscan tradition: sauces, pestos, preserves in oil, and wines.

The revival of organic Calabrian Liquorice Pdo

My father, Antonio, founded Nature Med in 1996, guided by three key ideas: to relaunch Calabrian liquorice, which had been in decline, taking over a historical plant; to rebuild the supply chain, focusing on producers and organic farming practices; and to promote it by achieving Pdo status. My brother Marco and I have been working with the company for the last ten years; he is in production, while I work in business and communications. Today, we deal with around twenty producers with about 400 hectares of land, used to grow certifiedorganic Calabrian Liquorice Pdo. We process approximately 5,000 quintals of root per year, producing liquorice with unique organoleptic properties. A true revival.

Fermented organic vegetables that feed the microbiota

My interest in the health benefits of live fermented foods began as a passion, involving research and dissemination of scientific data on my blog, before becoming a job of courses and consultancy work, and finally giving rise to an innovative start-up. I founded Life in 2018, with two partners. We produce unpasteurised, naturally fermented vegetables, using Italian and organic ingredients. A food rich in live cultures, biodiversity for the body. It all starts with the ecosystem of the soil, which provides the microbiota to the vegetables, which provide micro-organisms to the gut microbiota, vital to the immune system. Not a sophisticated elite or gourmet product, but an invaluable food for all: healthy and, above all, tasty.

The ethical and organic Apulian preserved produce supply chain

The farming cooperative founded by my father in 1998 has been organic ever since. Our made-in-Apulia supply chain is complete: from the nursery, to growing the vegetables on about 400 hectares, to the processing into passatas, sauces, and vegetables in oil at our plant. I joined the cooperative in 2017, after my degree in economics, and launched the project of preserved tomatoes free from illegal exploitation of workers, the first ethical supply chain of this kind. We then expanded the product range, launched new packaging, opened new business channels, and finally focused on research and innovation. The most recent innovation is our nickel-free preserved tomatoes, with all the flavour and quality of organic field-grown tomatoes.

Thirty years of organic cosmetics in harmony with nature

My parents, Lucilla and Hubert, founded Remedia in 1992, starting with nothing but a shared dream: to grow, harvest and process officinal plants for wellbeing, health and beauty. Today, we are 40, we grow 300 species of plants across 40 hectares, and produce 1,500 products. Like Remedia, I turn 30 this year. A special year that will see me take the reins of the company as regards general coordination, while my brother Shankara takes over the farming side and my uncle Salvatore handles the education side. A challenge between organisational evolution, streamlining the vast production process and researching innovative products, such as our new cosmetics line with the regenerative power of plant buds.

What is set out in the European regulations, which are constantly being updated to keep pace with the ongoing evolution of the sector? And how to recognise an organic product from the label.

From pioneers to law

The pioneers of organic farming in Europe, beginning in the early 1970s, were fuelled by a great ideological drive, but had no regulatory guarantees. Indeed, it would be another twenty years before the first European regulation on organic farming was introduced in 1991 with European Council Regulation 2092/91, later replaced in 2009 by Regulation 834/2007 and on 1 January 2022 by Regulation 848/2018, which provides for group certification for smallscale producers or new products such as salt. A regulatory framework that is constantly being updated, including the extensive national legislation. Most recently, decree no. 229771 of the Italian Ministry of Agricultural Policies –a law anticipated for over 15 years, passed on 20 May 2022 and that came into effect on 1 July – regulates and incentivises organic farming in Italy. And so 2022 is a key year, but the wait continues, for implementation of organic districts and introduction of the Italian organic mark for organic products made from Italian ingredients.

Control bodies and standards

There are 19 active control bodies in Italy, plus two solely dedicated to the Bolzano province. They are recognised by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, based on the criteria of independence, impartiality, effectiveness, competency

and reliability. Accreditation in accordance with the ISO 17065 technical standard, on the other hand, is entrusted to Accredia, who oversees their work, monitoring their performance over time. There are also a number of private specifications, overseen by national associations and issued to companies that satisfy more restrictive criteria than those provided for in the regulations.

These include Demeter, which identifies biodynamically grown products.

Euroleaf guarantee

Consumers can identify whether a food is organic by checking the label, i.e. the product's identity card. The first thing to check for on the label is the Euroleaf, the European organic mark. Mandatory since 1 July 2010, it consists of twelve white stars on a bright green background, with a comet in the centre. To use the Euroleaf, organic products must:

• contain at least 95% organic ingredients

• comply with the control and certification system rules

• specify whether or not the product was grown/reared within the Eu

• specify the code of the control body. Naturally, the specific information required for organic products is in addition to the mandatory information for all food products.

Aside from hunting and fishing products, water, certain additives, vitamins and mineral salts, all agriculture, livestock and acquaculture products (including those obtained through foraging) can be certified, if they comply with organic regulations. These are based on respect for the fertility of the soil, the plants, the animals and the ecosystem that they form together, without the use of GMOs, fertilisers, weed killers, pesticides and synthetic veterinary drugs.

How to read labels

In order to read labels properly, it is important to know the various categories of products provided for by the European regulation:

• unprocessed organic products

Euroleaf mandatory products consisting 100% of exclusively organic ingredients of agricultural origin (e.g. apples or pulses).

The term "organic" appears in the product sales description and list of ingredients, if provided.

• 95% organic products

Euroleaf mandatory organic ingredients make up at least 95% of the weight of the ingredients of agricultural origin (e.g. vegetable sauce). The term "organic" appears in the product sales description and list of ingredients. Any non-organic ingredients of agricultural origin must be among those listed in annex IX of Reg. EC 889/08.

• products with organic ingredients

Euroleaf not permitted containing one or more organic ingredients. The term "organic" only appears in the ingredients list, and the label specifies the total percentage of organic products in the overall ingredients of agricultural origin.

the main ingredient is a hunting or fishing product and as such it cannot be certified as organic. All other ingredients of farming origin must, however, be organic (e.g. tuna in extra virgin olive oil).

The term "organic" can appear in the sales description, but only with reference to the organic ingredients (such as the oil in the above example).

• in-conversion products

Euroleaf not permitted products made up of a single plant-based ingredient grown according to an organic method for at least twelve months.

The term "in conversion to organic farming" can appear in the product sales description.

When the European organic logo appears, the place of farming of agricultural raw materials also appears, formulated as follows:

• Eu Agriculture, where the agricultural raw material has been farmed in the European Union;

• Non-Eu Agriculture, where the agricultural raw material has been farmed outside the European Union;

• Eu/non-Eu Agriculture, where part of the agricultural raw material has been farmed in the Eu and part outside the Eu.

The Eu Agriculture or non-Eu Agriculture indication may be replaced or supplemented by indication of a country or a region in the case where all agricultural raw materials have been farmed in that country or in that region.

Finally, since 2009, use of the term "organic" in the agriculture and food industry - and its abbreviations, such as "eco" and "bio", in the Italian context - is exclusively restricted to organic products, putting a stop to organic cheats, who were using such terms incorrectly.

The growth of organic cosmetics

Long available in health food and herbal stores, and historically popular via e-commerce, natural and organic cosmetics are experiencing a significant growth. Sold through organic perfumeries, the numbers of which are growing year on year, they're also increasingly available in hypermarkets and supermarkets, discount stores, specialist beauty and personal care chains and in the perfumery section of pharmacies. In the absence of European regulations, it is very difficult for consumers to differentiate between pseudo-natural products, with small amounts of organic ingredients, and truly organic products. Herein lies the importance and role of voluntary certification, based on private or international standards, certified by accredited control bodies. While they may involve very different specifications, they represent the current benchmark.

Long live transparency!

According to the Bio Bank 2021 census, 550 companies have taken this challenging step towards transparency, obtaining certification for over 17,000 natural or organic cosmetics products and 900 eco-friendly cleaning products. There are eight Italian control bodies with their own cosmetics standards, who also perform certification in accordance with other private Italian or international standards, such as Cosmos and Natrue. Five of these also oversee

eco-friendly cleaning products. There are other cosmetics industry standards that are applied in other European countries, some of which are also internationally recognised. The only European certification system for eco-friendly cleaning products, meanwhile, is Ecolabel, which focuses on the environmental impact of products, as Nordic Swan, the official Scandinavian certification system.

Natural, organic and eco-friendly

The guidelines contained in the various specifications can be simplified to offer the following definitions:

• natural cosmetics contains ingredients of plant-based, animal and/or mineral origin, not harmful to health

• organic cosmetics contains a variable percentage (which can be specified on the label) of certified organic ingredients of plant-based and/or animal origin

• eco-friendly cleaning products contains ingredients of plant-based and/or mineral origin that are effective and safe for humans and the environment, and organic ingredients.

The very welcome result is that conventional producers have been encouraged to move towards formulas that are free from unpleasant ingredients. Labels are proudly declaring these missing ingredients, resulting in cosmetics that are not yet organic, but increasingly "green".
