PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME BIS ABU DHABI TIMES

As Term 2 of the 2024-2025 academic year comes to a close, I’m excited to reflect on the highlights of this rewarding term at BIS Abu Dhabi. Our students have embraced new opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, building on the foundation laid in Term 1.
This term, we introduced two new sections in our magazine: Teaching & Learning and Student Wellbeing. These additions provide insight into how we continue to enhance our educational approach and support the holistic development of every student.
Throughout the term, our Primary students enjoyed a variety of immersive experiences. Nursery students explored the animal kingdom through Animal Dress-Up Day and the Petting Zoo, while all EYFS students celebrated creativity with Creative Day. Year 1’s Planet Earth Hook Day and Year 6’s Titanic Day provided hands-on learning experiences in environmental science and history. In Secondary, Year 8 students participated in a Design & Technology bridge testing challenge, while Year 12 students explored the cultural tradition of El Roscón de Reyes. These activities not only enhanced academic skills but also encouraged critical thinking and creativity.
This term featured a variety of service-related activities, aligning with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed’s vision and the Year of Community. Year 5 students planted Al Ghaf trees, promoting environmental sustainability and teamwork. Ramadan Assemblies and the 30-Day Service Challenge encouraged reflection on compassion and generosity,
while the Ydoom al Kheir Campaign collected food donations for the Red Crescent, reinforcing the value of giving back. Students from our Rock and Pop CCA organised Bandzania rock concerts, raising funds for our Tanzania initiative. These experiences reflect our commitment to developing well-rounded, empathetic individuals.
Term 2 was packed with exciting events. Primary BISAD Values and Attitude to Learning winners enjoyed a Breakfast with the Principal. Transition events, including the Year 6 Assembly and Year 11 Taster Sessions, guided students through key milestones. Enriching field trips ranged from the first Umrah trip for Year 8 and 9 to an IGCSE PE Rock Climbing trip for Year 10, along with Biology, Geography, and German Culture trips. The BSME competitions, along with our Duathlon and Sports Week, were sporting highlights, showcasing our students’ teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship.
Our community spirit has been strong this term. Events such as the Welcome Back BBQ, Healthy Eating Workshop, Chinese New Year celebration, and heartwarming Community Iftar have brought families and staff together, fostering unity and collaboration.
Term 2 has been filled with growth, achievement, and community spirit. I am proud of all we’ve accomplished and look forward to another successful term ahead. Wishing you all a restful spring break and a fulfilling Term 3!

Well-being Initiatives for Students
At BIS Abu Dhabi, our well-being initiatives cater to each age group:
• Early Years - We use the book The Colour Monster to help young learners identify and express their emotions, facilitating meaningful conversations about feelings.
• Years 1 and 2 - Worry Monsters encourage open communication.
• Year 3 - Students have access to Worry Boxes, where they can share concerns confidentially.
• Years 4 to 13 - Students benefit from the YouHQ platform, which provides digital support and resources. YouHQ also alerts key staff to carry out well-being check-ins, ensuring timely support for students. Currently, over 98% of our students engage with YouHQ across the school, highlighting the success of this initiative in promoting student well-being.
• Secondary students also have the option to self-refer and seek support through bisadiamnotok@bisad.ae, ensuring that they always have a safe space to share their concerns.
Continuous Improvement and Recognition
While these well-being initiatives play a key role in supporting students, our commitment to safeguarding also involves continuous improvement and external recognition.
BIS Abu Dhabi is committed to continuously improving its safeguarding culture. Through CPOMS, a system to track student behavior and concerns, staff can track students' needs in realtime, enabling quick responses and a proactive approach to safeguarding and well-being.
The recent Nord Anglia safeguarding review praised the school for its strong student-staff relationships, culture of incident reporting, and effective collaboration with external agencies. The PSME curriculum was also recognised for covering important topics like digital literacy, university preparation, healthy eating, mindfulness, and friendship development.

Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome Barry from Beat the Bully in Term 3. He will conduct digital literacy workshops for Years 8 and 9, reinforcing responsible online behaviour.

Partnering with Parents for a Safer Future
At BIS Abu Dhabi, safeguarding is a collective responsibility. While we have strong structures in place within the school, working in partnership with our parents and the wider community is essential in creating a truly safe and supportive environment. By fostering open communication between school and home, we ensure that every child feels valued, heard, and supported. Together, we can build a culture where students feel happy, safe, and empowered to speak up whenever they need help.
Year 1 Planet Earth Hook Day
At the start of Term 2, Year 1 classrooms transformed into a different part of the world, offering exciting activities and opportunities for our students to learn, including Asia, Antarctica, South America, North America, Europe & Africa!
Our Hook Day was an incredible launch to our topic Planet Earth, and the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They went on a fantastic journey around the world for the rest of the term, exploring and learning along the way.

Year 11 Taster Sessions
Our Year 11 students took part in a Senior School Taster Afternoon, designed to help them explore the exciting pathways available in the Senior School at BIS Abu Dhabi. From trying out new subjects to engaging in thought-provoking discussions, the event provided a valuable insight into the options ahead. The most popular session of the day was Theory of Knowledge, where Mr. Latif challenged students with fascinating questions that sparked deep reflection and debate. Students found the afternoon both informative and inspiring, with many commenting on how it helped shape their decisions for the next stage of their journey at BIS Abu Dhabi.

Year 8 Bridge Testing
This term, Year 8 students completed an exciting unit on forces, stresses, and their impact on structures. To apply their learning, students designed and built their own bridges in groups, testing their strength under increasing loads. One bridge held a remarkable 53kg before breakinga record that will be hard to beat! The challenge not only reinforced key concepts in Design & Technology, but also allowed students to showcase their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Year 12 celebrate the Tradition of el Roscón de Reyes
Our Year 12 Spanish students had the chance to immerse themselves in some cherished Spanish Christmas traditions during their lessons. Among the highlights was a new addition this year: el Roscón de Reyes, a traditional Spanish pastry enjoyed on 6th January to mark the arrival of the Three Kings. This sweet, ring-shaped cake is often filled with cream or custard and hides a small figurine and a bean. The lucky person who finds the figurine is crowned royalty for the day, while the one who finds the bean buys the next Roscón!
Our class Roscón crowned Abigail as Queen of the Day. This hands-on cultural experience allowed students to deepen their understanding of Spanish traditions while savouring a delicious treat. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo 2025!

Year 8 Literature Diorama
This term, some of our Year 8 classes showcased their diorama projects. This was a creative project intended to foster students’ understanding and exploration of key themes, characters and settings inspired by one of the texts taught in their last English topic: ‘Women in Literature’. The dioramas were created with sustainable materials, repurposing existing goods and plastics. Students presented their creations and engaged in thought-provoking discussions about the creative process. It was a delight to see such wonderful, varied and innovative designs come to life!

IGCSE & BTEC Level 2 Options Evening

On 15th January, we hosted our IGCSE and BTEC Level 2 Options Evening for current and prospective Year 9 students and their parents. This event marked the beginning of an important process where students explore and decide on their future educational and career pathways.
The evening began with a presentation by Mrs. McGlue, Mr. Stanier, and Mrs. Shkurka, outlining the students' four-year journey through IGCSE, BTEC, and IB Diploma Programmes. The presentation covered key details about the IGCSE curriculum, including compulsory and optional subjects, the support available for students and families, and the timeline for the options process.
After the presentation, families visited our interactive subject stations upstairs. They had the opportunity to review current student work, explore subject syllabi, and engage with teachers and current students to learn more about course content and potential career pathways.

It was a wonderful chance to celebrate their achievements and inspire others to continue striving for excellence!

Year 6 Titanic Day
Year 6 stepped back in time and experienced the grandeur, excitement, and drama of the RMS Titanic on our unforgettable Titanic Day! First-class passengers indulged in a delightful afternoon tea, savouring exquisite treats fit for the elite of 1912. Second-class passengers enjoyed a thrilling games experience, trying their hand at classic pastimes once played aboard the Titanic. Third-class passengers took part in a lively dance masterclass, learning the traditional jigs and reels that once filled the lower decks with joy and energy. Finally, all passengers came together for an immersive theatre experience, reliving the fateful moment when the Titanic struck the iceberg - bringing history to life in a truly unforgettable way!

Year 6 Transition Assembly
This term, our Year 6 students attended a special assembly delivered by Mrs. McGlue and Mrs. Watson, focused on preparing them for the upcoming move from Primary to Secondary School. The assembly acknowledged the natural feelings of nervousness that can come with change and reassured students that it is absolutely fine not to have all the answers straight away. Mistakes are an important part of learning. During the assembly, Mrs. McGlue and Mrs. Watson set Year 6 a fun challenge: they had to find a way to get a balloon from one end of the line to the other, without using their hands. It took a few attempts, but through teamwork and perseverance, they succeeded, showing that with persistance it is possible to overcome challenges.

Year 4 News Reporters

Year 4 had the exciting opportunity to work with Kathy Urban, a real-life Children's Author and Journalist, who taught them valuable writing skills. As a former successful journalist, Kathy shared her expertise in journalistic writing, which perfectly complemented our students' current learning on newspaper reports based on the characters from The Firework Maker’s Daughter. Our Year 4s were eager to share their reports with a real journalist, making the experience even more meaningful! Kathy then guided them in transforming their newspaper reports into live video news reports, helping them develop both their oracy and writing skills - all while deepening their understanding of a book they love. Thank you so much for your time, Kathy!

Arabic Parent Information Sessions
Our Arabic and Islamic department had the pleasure of meeting with parents this term to share key updates on teaching and learning in Arabic, Islamic, and Social Studies!

This meaningful gesture celebrates the friendships, support, and shared experiences that have defined their journey. As they prepare to take their next steps, these messages of appreciation serve as a lasting reminder of the strong bonds within our school community. A small act of kindness, with a big impact, ensuring that every student leaves with not just memories, but also words of encouragement to carry forward.

Nursery Animal Dress Up Day!
Our Nursery students had an incredible animal adventure recently. Our little explorers showcased their brilliant costumes in a hallway parade for the older years. We saw a showcase of different animals, from cute bears to pretty peacocks! Then they moved outside for more animal fun, dancing to catchy animal songs. They hopped, slithered, and even fluttered their way through every rhythm. It was a day filled with laughter and learning!

Year 6 Leadership Conference

Our Year 6 students had a fantastic time at the Leadership Conference earlier in the term, where they eagerly took part in engaging workshops designed to develop their leadership skills. They were inspired by a range of keynote speakers, including Mr. Dibdin, Head of Primary, and our Assistant Heads of Primary, Mrs. Burt & Mrs. Threlfall, who shared their experiences and insights on effective leadership. The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn from these role models and left feeling motivated and empowered to take on leadership roles within their school community.

Year 5 Plant Al Ghaf Trees
During their Social Studies lesson, Year 5 students had the opportunity to plant Al Ghaf trees, a symbol of resilience and sustainability, in line with the UAE's Vision 2031. The Al Ghaf tree, a native plant of the UAE, plays a vital role in conserving the environment and maintaining biodiversity. By planting these trees, students not only learned about the significance of the Al Ghaf in the UAE’s rich cultural heritage but also actively participated in the country's vision to promote green growth and environmental stewardship. This hands-on activity embodies the UAE's commitment to a sustainable future, where the younger generation plays a key role in protecting and nurturing the environment for years to come.

Using fragmented perspectives and layered compositions, they’ve reimagined these artworks, creating dynamic, multi-viewpoint interpretations that capture the essence of the city's artistic landscape. This project has challenged students to think beyond a single frame, exploring how photography can reshape our perception of space and form.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we collected more donations than ever, reflecting the spirit of the Year of Community and UAE’s vision of unity and social responsibility. A portion of these donations was distributed to our hardworking ancillary staff, recognising their dedication to our school, and the remaining contributions were handed over to Red Crescent, ensuring they reach families in need this Ramadan.

Community Parent Healthy Eating Workshop
We were delighted to welcome Dr. Samar Issa, Health and Nutrition expert from ADNH, our catering provider, this term. She delivered an informative and enjoyable workshop to parents, designed to answer their questions and promote ideas to support healthy and nutritious meals for their children. This is part of our long-term work to make sure that healthy eating and lifestyle choices are fully part of our school culture. We all know that healthy bodies lead to healthy minds and students who can achieve their potential. It was a pleasure to host this event, and we are thrilled by the positive feedback from parents.

Chinese New Year
On Tuesday, 4th February, our parent community was invited to a very special Chinese New Year celebration, immersing themselves in a vibrant celebration of Chinese culture. Our Year 4 students also took part in the celebrations, as part of their classwork on 'Innovators'. Their day started with a PE class outside, where they learnt a Chinese children's game. In the Main Hall, our Chinese community set up a variety of engaging activities, including a traditional tea ceremony, calligraphy art, and posing in the photobooth in beautiful cultural attire, which both parents and students got to enjoy. The students were then treated to a wonderful experience of making their own dumplings, deepening their appreciation for this rich heritage. A huge thank you to all the incredible parents and Chinese community who helped organise this event, and made it so special.

Little Stars

In February, parents were treated to a wonderful musical extravaganza, showcasing the incredible talent of our Little Stars CCA performers from Years 2 and 3.
Over the past two terms, our Little Stars have been working on their singing and dance routines with the support of three Year 11 Drama students, presenting songs and dances from the musicals Wonka, Trolls, Encanto, and Hannah Montana. Their confidence and creativity shone through, making the show a huge success.
It was a joy to see their enthusiasm and development in this fantastic performance. Congratulations to our Little Stars!

Band-zania Concert
Students from our Rock and Pop CCA took to the stage, delivering an electrifying live rock concert at BIS Abu Dhabi! Performing a mix of classics from Queen, Pearl Jam, and Coldplay, they captivated audiences across three separate concerts for the Secondary School and parents. Beyond the music, the event had a meaningful purpose - raising funds for the Tanzania project. This initiative supports our Year 10 students as they embark on their March trip, where they will help build essential resources, collaborate with the local community, and support our friends in Tanzania. Amidst all the excitement, we proudly raised an astounding 12,600 AED - an incredible achievement that reflects the dedication, teamwork, and passion of our performers. The atmosphere was electric, filled with music, lights, dancing, and a vibrant energy that spread throughout the school!

Abu Dhabi Graduate Oliver Burns
What made BIS Abu Dhabi special for you?
BIS Abu Dhabi is special to me because of the meaningful relationships I built with both friends and teachers. From when I joined in 2016 to graduation, I was fortunate to meet so many people who I still stay in touch with today. We shared great times together, and supported one another through academic and personal challenges. I also developed strong connections with my teachers, who made learning such an enjoyable experience.
Which school activity inspired you the most?

Class of 2022
My service project during the IB CAS programme was the most inspiring experience for me. It focused on raising awareness about environmental sustainability and promoting plastic bottle recycling. It motivated me to dive deeper into research, learning how different countries are addressing sustainability while finding my own way to live a more ‘greener’ lifestyle. Now, I’m continuing this journey by making environmental sustainability the focus of my current university dissertation.
What is the most important lesson you learned at BIS Abu Dhabi?
Hard work pays off! I wasn’t always academically minded and at a point I found myself falling behind. I decided to make a change and started to work harder and take more pride in my work. After spending extra time to revise and understand topics, I began to see some improvements in my grades! It all paid off when I obtained the IB results I wanted and achieved a place in a prestigious university.
What ambitions did BIS Abu Dhabi inspire in you?
BIS Abu Dhabi sparked my interest in education. The teachers did more than just teach the curriculum, they also helped me become a better learner by taking the time to understand and address my weaknesses. They encouraged my growth and showed me I was capable of things I thought were out of reach. One teacher, in particular, had such a positive impact on me that it made me want to become a teacher myself. While I haven't pursued a career in education right away, it remains something I plan to explore in the future, with the hope of having the same positive impact on other students.
Which university & degree did you choose, and why?
I chose to study Geography at The University of Manchester because of its state-of-the-art facilities, interesting course content, and the variety of extracurricular activities that I am passionate about. I was excited about living in Manchester too. The city is incredible, the people are friendly and there's always something happening. I chose a degree in Geography, as I’ve always found it interesting and it felt like the natural path to take. My advice when choosing a course is to pick something you’ll enjoy, and don’t worry if it doesn’t work - you can always switch later. Also, consider the city your university is in, since you will be spending a lot of time there, and it's important to feel happy and comfortable.
How did the IB help your experience at university?
IB helped improve my essay-writing skills, which has been a huge advantage in my degree, given the heavy focus on essays and a final dissertation. Learning to write quickly and efficiently during IB also helped me with my university exams. Additionally, during IB, I learnt how to reference other works when writing an essay, which is an integral part of academic writing at university level. I’ve noticed that some of my peers have never done referencing before, so it’s clear that the IB Diploma gave me a head start.
What has been your proudest moment since graduating?
Apart from academics, my proudest moment has been completing my first half-marathon in October. I started training a year ago, initially running for fun, but now I’m more focused on improving my speed and distance. The experience was incredibly rewarding, and the support from my friends and family made me realise how significant the achievement was. I’m now training for my second half-marathon in May, and hope to raise lots of money for charity at the same time!
What are you doing now?
I’m currently in my final year of university, writing my dissertation on transport and environmental sustainability. Looking ahead, I’m preparing for a career in the Royal Navy, something I’ve aspired to since I was 17. I’m working on my fitness and preparing for the assessments to apply for the role of Royal Naval Officer. In the meantime, I stay active by playing field hockey with friends and continuing my half-marathon training.
