YEARBOOK 2022/2023
WELCOME TO THE 2022-2023 YEARBOOK FOR THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ABU DHABI
What an incredible and inspirational year it has been at The British International School Abu Dhabi! As we reflect upon the past year, we are filled with immense pride and joy for the world-class learning experiences we have been able to offer our students. Our mission to nurture empathetic, resilient, and talented individuals has started to come to life, shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.
As you turn the pages of this yearbook, you will witness not only the celebration of learning but also the vibrant tapestry of fantastic activities that our students have embraced throughout the year. From our Happiness Day – One People One Planet event hosted by our Year 12 Student Activists Team to the exhilaration of having the BSME (British Schools in the Middle East) back and emerging triumphant in the BSME U19 games, our students have shown extraordinary determination and passion in every endeavour. Furthermore, the recent inauguration of our new auditorium and Creative Arts Centre with the spectacular performance of Bugsy Malone, the musical, was a testament to the boundless creativity and talent within our student community. The applause and admiration that filled the auditorium echoed the spirit of accomplishment that resonates
throughout our school. We are certain it will open a world of creativity and artistic expression for our students in the future.
At The British International School Abu Dhabi, we firmly believe in the power of community. This yearbook is a testament to the deep friendships forged among our students, the unwavering support provided by our dedicated staff, and the collaborative efforts of our exceptional parents. Together, we have built a nurturing and inclusive environment where every individual can thrive.
As you flip through these pages, we hope you feel a surge of joy, laughter, emotion, and energy. May the smiles that illuminate your faces inspire us once again as we embark on yet another year brimming with learning and new opportunities. Let this yearbook serve as a reminder of the remarkable journey we have shared and a testament to the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
Thank you for being a part of our incredible community. Here’s to a bright future filled with growth, discovery, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence.

YEAR 2D
MRS. HETHERINGTON
What a fantastic year for 2D!
In the first term, we kickstarted the year as superheroes! The children enjoyed dressing up as superheroes and took part in some fun superhero activities. In English, we read the book Traction Man and the children wrote their own exciting Traction Man adventure. In science, we learnt all about what humans need to survive and tested materials so we could make a waterproof cape for Superman. We also learned about everyday superheroes such as doctors, nurses, police officers, cleaners and fire fighters.
In term 2, we went on a ‘school safari’ and visited the Emirates Park Zoo to learn more about wild animals. In class, we developed our ICT skills to research and then wrote an animal fact file. After, 2D read the story The Greedy Zebra and then wrote their own version of this tale. To end this topic, we invited our families into school for a spectacular animal themed showcase!
Finally, we met George and his ghastly Grandma when reading ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. We then helped George by making our own potion for Grandma and an “English toolkit’ potion to help write a fantastic character description.
Throughout the year, the class have proved themselves to be hardworking, kind, courageous and excellent at working together. They have shown great enthusiasm and perseverance with their learning and have all made great progress.
Well done 2D on such an amazing year!

MRS. POPE YEAR
As we have reached the end of this school year, Let’s take a moment to reflect and cheer.
Maths was a challenge we all faced, But with perseverance, we absolutely aced, We learned that numbers can tell us so much, And that math can be a language we can all touch.
Science investigations were fun and new, We learned to ask questions and to pursue, The answers that lay hidden in plain sight, And discovered the magic of scientific insight.
Our play ‘The One and Only Ivan’ was a hit, We acted, sang, and danced with such grit, We learned that art can tell stories so bold, And bring emotions to life, like never before told.
Sustainability was a theme we explored, We learned to conserve and to be mindful and more,
We discovered that every action we take, Can impact the world, and the choices we make. Minecraft education was truly great, Where we had the opportunity to learn and innovate,
In Minecraft we built and explored, With lessons hidden in each score.
National day, Happiness Hay, Kindness Day, Were all days we celebrated in our own way, We learned that every day is a chance to give, And that love and kindness are what make life truly live.
So let’s take all these lessons, and carry them forth,
As we embark on new journeys, south, east, west, and north,
Let’s be kind, curious, and always willing to learn, And let our passion and spirit, forever yearn.
Mrs. Pope & Ms. Romily.

To my 4E class, it’s time to say goodbye, But before we go, let’s take a moment to try, To recall all the things we’ve done this year, And celebrate our achievements with a big cheer! Next up was Hydroponics, a new frontier, We built our own systems and watched plants appear, We visited a farm to see it all in action, Learning about sustainability, an important attraction. We won Star Line-Up, so many times this year, We worked so hard, and it paid off, we cheered! Triathlons were another challenge, that we bravely faced,
Showing our strength and determination with grace. Minecraft was our world, where we let our imaginations run, Creating characters and stories, that were second to none,

4F, our time together has flown, A year of growth and learning, but now we must go.
From National Day celebrations to science experiments that wowed, We’ve explored so much together and made ourselves proud.

Learned about circuits and electricity and let our curiosity show.
Acting in ‘The One and Only Ivan’, we memorised every line, With stories of magic and adventure, we began to shine.
In Minecraft, we built our own fantasy land, Where our creativity knew no bounds, and we let our imaginations expand.
But what stands out most, is how much you’ve grown,

So, here’s to Year 4, and all that you’ve done, A year of growth, of learning, of having lots of fun, Keep that spirit alive 4F, and don’t forget to smile.

As the school year draws to a close, I’m reflecting on how much you’ve grown and how far you’ve come,
From learning about space and the stars above, To designing hoverboards that could soar like doves.
We ventured out to the waterways and went kayaking,
And explored the beauty of nature in all its making,
On Japanese Culture Day, we celebrated and learned,
And found joy in the art of sushi-making and origami, unconcerned.
We sat by the campfire, shared stories, and built tents,
And discovered the power of teamwork and making amends,
We solved mysteries and puzzles with great zeal, And learned to collaborate and understand how others feel.
As we say goodbye, my dear students in 5C, I want you to know how proud I am of you and how much you mean to me, Keep chasing your dreams, believing in yourselves, and learning new things, And always remember that you have the power to achieve anything.

As I reflect on the events of this year, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude and admiration for the pupils in 5G. Their thirst for knowledge and their willingness to explore the unknown has led to many memorable moments throughout the year: From designing Mars Rovers as you explored the depths of our Solar System to working together in a team as you built your own working hoverboards in Term 1.
From starting fires and paddling kayaks as you survived in the wild to making sushi and crafting origami as you immersed yourselves in Japanese culture in Term 2.
From searching for clues as you analysed famous mysteries of the past to dissecting flowers as you studied our natural world in Term 3. Each exciting activity pushed them beyond their limits and revealed their potential. I’m proud to have worked with such an amazing group of children and to have been a part of their journey towards growth and development. 6D! What an amazing year it has been – the time has just gone too quickly! In all my years as a teacher, I have never met such a well-rounded group of children. You are funny and witty with each other and the adults in our class; making me smile and laugh on a daily basis. You are hard-working and hungry for knowledge –certainly the most competitive class I have ever been involved in (I love competitiveness). That need to learn more has meant that you have all made such great progress from the beginning of the year; never wasting a moment or an opportunity to gain new knowledge; constantly challenging each other. Most of all, you have been kind and supporting of one another. I said to you on day one of this year, ‘you are a team, I expect you to support each other and share your knowledge,’ that is exactly what you have done – never a classmate left behind. For all of this, I am extremely grateful and thankful for the year we have spent together, and I am so proud of everything you have achieved! I cannot wait to hear all about the next steps in your educational journeys, whether it be here at BIS Abu Dhabi or elsewhere. Thank you for an incredible year and making me love coming to work every day!

What an exciting year it has been! I am so proud of 9D and their achievements. It was year of growth, experiences, learning from mistakes and thinking and planning for their future. We are lucky to have such a diverse group of pupils with different backgrounds and interests, and so lovely to see how they all come together to support and encourage each other. I am excited to see what next year brings and hope that we have more opportunities to grow, take risks and try new things. Whether it is presenting in front of the class, participating in a debate, or volunteering to lead a group project, I know you will be up for the challenge of stepping outside your comfort zone! Mrs. Saadawi.

MRS. PUCHALSKI
This year has been extremely rewarding year for 9F, we have had more fun, laughter and learning through collaboration, curiosity and sheer determination to do well in all aspects of our daily lives. We started the year with a bang ensuring we took part in House Day which was great fun. Many of our students were great ambassadors for the school as they embarked on leadership opportunities such as Sports Leaders for the BSME games. It was so great to see 9F become involved in CCA’s, representing the school sports teams and visual arts competitions and sharing their talent by being part of the school production Bugsy either as performers, musicians or creating and building the set.
As always, we have opened our arms to new students who have joined our form throughout the year and showed kindness and really made their transition into a new school smoother knowing they have friends and buddies to turn to in any situation. Year 9F I am so proud of the young, conscientious. kind individuals you are and every day you shine and make BIS Abu Dhabi a happier place!
Mrs. Puchalski.

YEAR 10B
MS. FUNNELL
Chess has been quite a popular theme this year for some of 10B and we have even hosted one of the BIS Abu Dhabi Champion Team Chess Players in our form class! This quote has perhaps a broader message and metaphor more significant for all of you. No matter how you feel, it’s important to never underestimate your potential and the impact that your words, choices and actions can have on making a positive difference to others. This year, I have watched you begin to mature into young adults, not only preparing to take on the prospect and responsibility of gaining official qualifications, I’ve seen you grow in awareness of all the ways you learn, develop and become balanced, kind and thoughtful individuals. I have been super impressed with how you have embraced new challenges, whether it be learning a new skill, performing on stage, or embarking on one of the Year 10 DofE or Tanzania Service Trips this year, and how you have then reflected on how these experiences have developed you in your BISAD Diplomas. Together we will take on the coming year, one square at a time 10B, as there is magic ahead waiting for all of you...
Ms. Funnell.
And even if you were a pawn - maybe we all are - then you should remember that a pawn is the most magical piece of all. It might look small and ordinary but it isn’t. because a pawn is never just a pawn. A pawn is a queen-in-waiting. All you need to do is find a way to keep moving forward. One square after another. And you can get to the other side and unlock all kinds of power. - Matt Haig

MS. BURROWS YEAR 11A
Dear 11A,
As this academic year draws to a close and you become one step closer to the next part of your journey, I would like to echo what I have written in many of your reports, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been your form tutor and to get to know you over the last 3 years. We are a form made up of 15 nationalities and at least 12 different languages with many of you speaking multiple languages and of course 19 very different personalities! A true international form class. A lot has happened in 3 years. It has been fantastic to see you all develop into the young adults you are now, looking out for each other, taking risks, trying new things, being curious, caring, forging friendships, being involved in House Days, the BISAD Diploma, overseas trips, sports, BSME, chess, Duke of Edinburgh to name a few. You all seem to have coped admirably with the pandemic and all the many challenges it posed for us all (even though I nagged you regularly to upload your PCR results!) showing huge resilience and strength.
Some of you are staying here at BIS Abu Dhabi, some moving to schools in the UAE and some of you returning to your home countries, I wish you all well wherever your journey takes you and will be following your progress, knowing you all have an exciting future ahead of you.
Thank you 11A.
Ms. Burrows.

I have had the absolute fortune of being welcomed into 11B Form this year. You have all demonstrated how collaboration and kindness work together, and I felt part of a true ‘family’ in our time together each morning. I have a lot of respect for the way that you listened to guidance and advice, and you sought clarity and questioned to understand when you needed to. Keep standing up for each other and being the awesome role models to the younger students in our community that you are consistently demonstrating you can be. I wish you all the best for your move into your final years of education and look forward to working with many of you next year. Thank you for an amazing year!

It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter to you, as it means that our time together has come to an end. I have had the pleasure of being your form tutor for the past five years, and I cannot begin to express how much I have enjoyed it. I have watched you all grow and mature into wonderful individuals over the years. I am proud of the progress you have made in your studies, as well as the growth you have achieved in terms of character, empathy, and responsibility. It has been an honour to witness your intellectual curiosity and your passion for learning.

It’s been a really memorable year for our students in 12A. Overall, a very successful year, with lots to look forward to in Year 13. Mrs. Ezzat.

MR. MALONE YEAR 12E Hard
At last! Finally! Thank goodness! About time! It feels a bit weird!
All thoughts we had shortly after the start of the academic year when we discovered we no longer had to wear masks. It has been great to be able to have a form group at BIS Abu Dhabi whose faces I can actually see rather than being hidden away.
Whilst 12E has been a newly formed group, you all settled in together with ease and welcomed those new to Abu Dhabi and BIS Abu Dhabi as though they had been here for years. The way people volunteered to help with House Day, whether to organise the 12E activity or support departments was great to see and set a good tone for the rest of the year.
Participation and volunteering across many activities this year including cricket, rugby, National Day, student leadership and Happiness Day has seen you not only enrich your own experiences, but were also for the benefit of the wider BIS Abu Dhabi community.
Whilst it was for your achievements before you were in Year 12, to see so many of you be recognised for your outstanding achievements at iGCSE has been wonderful and shows you are well on the way to fulfilling your potential. This is something many of you should be very proud of.
I promise you this 12E, CAS is not my favourite word in the whole world, though I wouldn’t blame you for thinking it is! Keep up the great work that you are doing with this – I may not be around next year, but I’ll be in contact with Mrs. Lowe asking to hear of all you are doing, and expecting to hear you are all working hard to maximise your potential and many talents! Mr Malone.

YEAR 13A
MR. MITCHELL
As we look back on this past year, it’s clear that we’ve faced challenges and overcome obstacles that we never thought possible. From adapting to new learning environments to navigating a world in the midst of a global pandemic, we have shown resilience and strength in the face of adversity. But we’ve also had moments of joy and celebration, from Lit Fest to CAS projects that showcased our talents and passions. We’ve grown as individuals and as a community, learning from one another and building connections that will last a lifetime.
As we move forward, let’s carry with us the lessons we’ve learned and the memories we’ve made. Let’s continue to support each other and strive for excellence in all that we do. And let’s remember that, no matter where our paths may lead us, we will always be part of the Class of 2023. Congratulations on a successful year, and best wishes for the future.
Mr. Mitchell.

Over the past two years, you have impressed me with your commitment and your resilience. These qualities will serve you well in the next stage of your education and beyond.
As you head off in different directions, question the world that you find. If you never stop questioning, you will never stop learning. Also question the way things are, as you have the power to change it.

YEAR 13C
MRS. MACKINVEN
Well done 13C – you made it!
I have been very proud of each and every one of you, not just for your academic achievements but for all those incredible things you have been doing behind the scenes that complimented CAS. Your diverse range of talents and interests is highly commendable, and it has been an absolute joy to work with all of you as you tackled the university application experience. As much as it may not have seemed like it (with me obsessing over comma splices or other grammatical tweaks), I really enjoyed learning new things about you and I have no doubt that you will all go on to do well in your chosen fields.
As you move on to your next adventure in life, take comfort in the knowledge that your parents, friends, and teachers have equipped you with all that you need to embark on your new journey. Take a piece of BIS Abu Dhabi with you - not literally please. Over this year, you will have absorbed not just knowledge and skills, but also this school’s values, culture and diversity. Take that experience and use it wherever you go. I can only imagine the exciting paths some of you are about to take. Remember “the path of tomorrow doesn’t exist” yet but I’m sure you will have fun carving it!
Mrs. MacKinven.
