We were delighted to welcome so many parents to our first Phonics Workshops of the year for FS2, Year 1 and Year 2.
FS2 parents enjoyed meeting Fred the Frog and diving into oral blending, followed by interactive phonics activities with their children in the classroom.
Year 1 parents were introduced to the Read Write Inc. (RWI) scheme, sharing how their children will learn to read and write with us at BIS Abu Dhabi.
Year 2 parents participated in a Phonics & Reading Workshop, where they explored key phonics elements, practised speed sounds, and discovered new ways to support their children’s reading journey at home.
We hope these sessions were helpful and gave a clearer understanding of how phonics works. We look forward to welcoming you back later on in the year.
Our Year 5 writing workshop was a resounding success! Parents gained valuable insights into how we develop writing skills, including strategies to improve vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall fluency. They had the chance to explore both creative and structured writing tasks designed to build student confidence and ability.

The final Parent Coffee Morning of the year, featured a workshop by behavioural specialists from Aspris Wellbeing Centre. Through the workshop, parents were supported to reflect on ways to manage stress and improve communication patterns within the family. There was a specific focus on attachment/parenting styles, one’s own childhood, understanding family relationships and how to foster healthy interactions. The session provoked some very insightful discussions which created a space for reflection and parental growth. A huge thank you to everyone who participated – together, we’re creating stronger, healthier family dynamics!
Our Parent Community Group hosted a delightful macramé workshop for parents, combining creativity and community bonding. From crafting descriptive writing to solving addition and subtraction problems, exploring reading comprehension, and demonstrating their knowledge of skeleton types, our students did a remarkable job showcasing their skills. Parents also joined their children in reflecting on their Year 3 journey so far, creating special moments of connection and pride. The event was a resounding success, with parents praising the creativity and enthusiasm of their children. Thank you to everyone who came along!
Secondary's first ‘The Big Issue’ guest speaker event took place on Monday, 25th November. The most requested topic by our parent community was ‘Anxiety and Stress Management’ and we were delighted to welcome Dr. Asha Dullabh, a Senior Clinical Psychiatrist at Global Care Hospital to deliver a presentation on this ‘Big Issue.’ The session was very well attended, and parents actively participated, posing thoughtprovoking questions and sharing their perspectives, creating a vibrant atmosphere of mutual learning and dialogue. The positive feedback highlighted the importance of addressing these topics in a proactive and collaborative manner. As a result, plans are already underway to organise follow-up workshops and foster ongoing conversations, ensuring continued support for our school community's well-being.
On Wednesday, 4th December, our school community came together to celebrate the festive season at The British International School Abu Dhabi’s first-ever Winter Concert. The auditorium buzzed with excitement and festive cheer as students lit up the stage with their energy and artistry. Guests also enjoyed delicious treats from the Community Group Snack Shop, adding a cosy touch to the festivities.

At the end of Term 1, our FS2 children took to the stage to perform their adorable production of The Colour Monster! Through songs, dances, and confident speeches, they shared the importance of understanding and expressing emotions. In November, our Secondary Music students hosted their first Open Mic evening of the year! The Open Mic programme, held every Wednesday lunchtime, provides students with a platform to showcase their talents, performing live music for friends and classmates, and adding a vibrant musical touch to BIS Abu Dhabi each week.
The Open Mic evening was a fantastic celebration of their hard work and passion for music, shared with friends, teachers, and family. The event featured a diverse lineup of performances from the Rock and Pop CCA, the Secondary Choir CCA, and soloists from the Orchestra. The repertoire included an impressive range of styles and instruments, featuring music by Queen, Hans Zimmer, Shostakovich, and Metallica. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and our students should be incredibly proud of their performances!
Our BSME U19 squad competed in the BSME Games at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi this term, joining 14 teams from across the Middle East. The weekend kicked off with Boys' Football and Girls' Netball. The Boys' Football team narrowly lost in a penalty shootout, finishing as runners-up, while the Girls' Netball team placed 7th. Special mention to Leandro (Year 13), who was named MVP of the Boys' Football competition.
Saturday saw the Girls' Football team finishing 7th and the Boys' Volleyball team securing 3rd place. BIS Abu Dhabi finished 3rd overall, an outstanding achievement! We are incredibly proud of our students' accomplishments, resilience, and sportsmanship, with positive feedback highlighting their respect and character throughout the event. Well done to all!
On 14th November, we proudly hosted our annual BIS Abu Dhabi Triathlon in collaboration with Gulf Multi Sport!
An incredible 200 athletes from Year 3 to Year 13 participated, showcasing remarkable determination and resilience throughout the event. Our amazing CAS volunteers supported the transition zones, providing guidance on the course, while staff volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly as marshals. A special thank you to our Community Group for running the snack shop and sponsoring ice pops, keeping everyone energised.
The triathlon included swimming, cycling, and running, with course distances tailored to each year group. Every athlete crossed the finish line and received a well-deserved participation medal. The final run, often the toughest part, was met with unwavering effort and determination, cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of parents and supporters.
Congratulations to all athletes and volunteers for making this event such a success!
During the National Weekend, over 60 students participated in the Dubai7 event in various capacities, showcasing the spirit and talent of BIS Abu Dhabi. Students played for the combined Nord Anglia Education Netball and Rugby teams, represented their own clubs, and volunteered to support the event. It was fantastic to see so many students and staff enjoying the atmosphere, proudly representing their teams, and cheering each other on from the sidelines.
The Rugby teams faced tough opposition, but having two teams in the competition this year, compared to one last year, was a significant achievement. Despite the challenges of bringing players together from our school and sister school NAS Dubai, they gave their best and embraced the experience of competing at the prestigious Dubai 7s. Plans are already underway to strengthen collaboration between Nord Anglia schools in the UAE to compete more effectively against top teams like DESC and DC in the future.
The Netball team delivered a strong performance, reaching the plate final and narrowly missing the win by just two points. After a slow start, they found their rhythm and played excellent netball. This remarkable effort was even more impressive given they had only two training sessions together and included players from three different Nord Anglia schools.
The student volunteers were outstanding throughout the weekend, starting early and finishing late, with some days extending until 10 pm. Their dedication and enthusiasm were evident, and they relished the opportunity to be part of such a high-profile event. A highlight for many was stepping onto the main pitch and meeting professional players. Event organisers were highly impressed with the volunteers working on Pitches 1 and 2, where professional matches took place, and shared glowing feedback about their contributions. A heartfelt thank you to all the students and staff who played, supported, or volunteered during the weekend. BIS Abu Dhabi truly shone on the big stage!
What made BIS Abu Dhabi special for you?
BIS Abu Dhabi has always felt like a second home for me because of the positive and friendly atmosphere. It is clear the staff care about supporting the students. I always felt comfortable speaking to teachers when I had concerns, and was also excited to share my successes with them. The school also encourages togetherness through its diversity of nationalities and opportunities to bring together students of different ages on House Days, National Day celebrations and even when older students help out with CCAs and sports teams for younger years. There is a clear community feeling.
Which school activity inspired you the most?
My favourite memory was participating in the 2023 U19 BSME Games, during my final year of school. It was an incredibly special experience not only because our school was the overall winner, but to be able to reflect on how far the team and I had come since my first BSME U11 Games (where we came last). We were given a parade through the school to celebrate our success and I was also honoured to give a short speech. It was a fitting end to my BSME journey.
What is the most important lesson you learned during your time at BIS Abu Dhabi?
I learnt that with hard work you can achieve anything you put your mind to, especially in relation to the IB programme. Some things will take a while, but if you break things up and reflect on the progress you have made along the way, it makes it less overwhelming. This was especially relevant during COVID lockdown, during my GCSEs, when things became really challenging. The teachers at BIS Abu Dhabi kept encouraging me to work hard, and through listening to their advice and putting in the effort, I was able to get the grades that I wanted. I continued that momentum through my IB years and now achieved my ultimate goal, to get accepted into my top University choice.
What ambitions did BIS Abu Dhabi inspire in you?
BIS Abu Dhabi inspired a love of learning in me, which is one of the reasons why I am currently studying Law. And when I start my career, I will still be learning because every case is so different, and the law is constantly evolving. BIS Abu Dhabi has also inspired me to always aim high, which is why I aimed for Oxford, why I will aim to attain a Training Scheme in a top Law Firm, and why I am aiming to be a Blues Runner in the Oxford University Cross Country Club.
Which university and degree did you choose, and why?
It was a tough choice between Engineering and Law, as both involve problem solving. I settled on Law because it was the option that would best keep my options open in the future. Travel and working with different people from all over the world is important to me, I think that is because I have grown up amongst so many people from different cultural backgrounds, and I understand that studying English Law will allow me to practice law in many different countries. Also, I thought that in the future, I could take my legal practice to work with engineering firms, meaning I could have a bit of everything. For my university choice, I think I had always aspired to go to the University of Oxford because of its reputation, and BIS Abu Dhabi has always encouraged its students to ‘Be Ambitious’. But, I also attended an Open Day in Oxford and from then on couldn’t see myself going anywhere else.
How did the IB help your experience at university?
Managing a heavy workload and tight deadlines during the IB Programme helped make a smooth transition from school to university. Due to the coursework that the IB requires you to complete, I have felt more confident when writing, researching and referencing for my university essays. Furthermore, the IB focuses on reflection and evaluation, which has encouraged me to not only engage with different perspectives that enhance my arguments, but also to self-reflect which has helped to improve my learning and writing.
What has been your proudest moment since graduating?
Since graduating, I was very proud to achieve a 2.1 in my end of Year 1 University Exams. I was also proud to have my first job, working as a waitress in a café over the summer, and to earn money for the first time (that didn’t come from a race). It was a fascinating experience, in which I learnt so many new skills and so much about working with different people and customers.
What are you doing now?
I am currently in my second year of studying law at the University of Oxford, learning and studying for my final exams which will take place in 2026. Those exams will allow me to move to the next step in my path towards becoming a solicitor. Aside from reading tort law and land law this term, I am part of the University’s cross country club and Oriel College’s rowing club to keep active and to maintain a good balance between work and social life.
At our school, we celebrate every child’s unique gifts and talents, by creating exceptional learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. We believe in preparing our students to not only achieve academically, but to also develop character, kindness, and confidence to make a positive difference in the world.
