Associate Principals Welcome
ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME BIS ABU DHABI TIMES
I am delighted to present the Term 1 edition of the BIS Abu Times for the 2023-24 academic year, reflecting on the multitude of events that have taken place at The British International School Abu Dhabi during our first term. Our year began with a warm “back to school” welcome during parent coffee mornings at the start of the term. These gatherings provided a fantastic opportunity for parents to connect with each other and key staff members, fostering a sense of community within each year group. We were honoured to welcome Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi back to UAE soil, and it was heartwarming to see 11 of our students greeting him in traditional Emirati attire. This historic moment filled our community with pride and inspiration. In October, we proudly hosted our 2nd annual Young Leaders Conference, welcoming 187 students from Year 7 to Year 13. The conference focused on nurturing leadership skills, instilling qualities such as teamwork and empathy essential for meaningful relationships. The palpable growth in confidence observed throughout the day was truly inspiring. A standout event was the ‘Eco-Enterprise’ charity event organised by our Year 13 IB Business students. This student-led initiative, held in October, showcased our commitment to global sustainability goals, raising over 20,000AED for Red Crescent. The success underscored the strength of unity within our school community and reflected our dedication to creating a positive impact. In November, we welcomed Dr. Leslie Williams, Senior Programme Lead for Social Impact and Giving at Nord Anglia, to our school. Her impactful workshop on positive language and responsibility resonated with Year 12 students, reinforcing our commitment to social responsibility. November also saw the launch of Year 4s COP28 Sustainability Conference, inspired by COP28 in
2
Dubai. The students, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi University, delved into sustainability challenges, showcasing their research through an engaging art project. Inviting parents to witness their efforts emphasised the importance of sustainability education. Celebrating UAE Flag Day, our school gathered under the flag to reflect on our values; Kindness, Respect and Honesty. The ceremony, including the raising of the flag by Emirati students, underscored our commitment to fostering a sense of unity and pride. World Children’s Day and House Day prompted students to actively engage in discussions about Sustainable Development Goal 10, encouraging our school community to contribute to a better world for children globally. The Under 19 BSME Games in Kuwait showcased the athletic prowess of our students, with the boys securing gold in football and the girls earning bronze in netball. The Dubai 7’s tournament in November was a testament to the potential of our rugby team, winning the plate final with an impressive 40-7 victory. This accomplishment marks the beginning of an exciting journey for the Nord Anglia Education Rugby programme. Culminating the term, our National Day celebration was a spectacular event, bringing families and staff together for a day filled with activities and traditional Arabic performances. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the staff, students and parents involved in organising this unforgettable day. As we approach the winter break, I wish everyone a peaceful and relaxing holiday. Looking forward to welcoming everyone back for an exciting Term 2. Alan Cocker Associate Principal

UK Study Options Talk
This term, we were delighted to welcome back Kate Raison, the Director of UK Study Options, to talk to parents about University Fees in the UK. Determining whether students are eligible for home fees rather than international fees at UK universities is highly complex and an issue which affects many of the expat families within our community. Kate explained some of the factors that determine the fee structure and gave some general advice with respect to building up a portfolio of evidence to argue the case for ‘home status’. Ultimately though, every case is different. Kate’s company helps families navigate the system and make sense of the requirements with a view to save them money in the long term.
IDP University Expo
In September, the Falcon Academy Sports Hall became a venue for our largest ever University Fair with over 80 stands. Students and parents from Years 11 – 13 had the opportunity to speak to representatives from universities in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland and Australia. Students left clutching brochures and with a better understanding of application processes, entry requirements, scholarship opportunities and what life beyond BIS Abu Dhabi may look like.

Year 4 Spelling Bee On Monday, 9th October, the school came alive with excitement for Year 4s very first Spelling Bee, a captivating event hosted by the dynamic Mr. East. Seven eager participants from each class stepped onto the stage. The competition was divided into two riveting rounds. First, the Dictionary Use challenge had participants flipping through dictionaries, showcasing their vocabulary as they located words. The room was abuzz with the rapid flip of pages and the thrill of discovery. Next came the Spelling Words round, where participants, still basking in the excitement, displayed their mastery of the English language, tackling words both familiar and complex with unwavering focus. The event was such a hit, it’s now set to return every Half Term. The applause and cheers echoed through the hall as all participants received well-deserved recognition for their dedication and passion for words. In a dazzling finale, Fathi emerged as the ultimate champion, securing the first-place trophy and the prestigious title of Spelling Bee Champion. The audience erupted in applause, thoroughly impressed by Fathi’s remarkable spelling talent. As the school eagerly anticipates the next Spelling Bee, we congratulate all participants and reserve a special salute for Fathi’s outstanding achievement.
Year 3 Archeologists
FS2 Phonics Workshop Equipped with spades and curiosity, Year 3 have been unearthing pieces of history this term. Our young explorers haven’t just been excavating artifacts; they’ve also become skilled at asking questions.
6
They’ve realised that posing the right questions is just as crucial as finding answers. Each artifact they uncovered sparked a dozen more questions, and that’s the essence of learning. This practical Science lesson has not only ignited their passion for Science and History, but also revealed how archaeologists uncover the past. They learned to handle delicate finds, document their discoveries, and appreciate the power of curiosity.

Year 12 German Middle East Side Gallery On Wednedsay, 11th October, our Year 12 IB German students opened their classroom doors to find a completely different set up – The Middle East Side Gallery. They were able to walk around an interactive museum, take notes of and learn about major artworks from the Berlin Wall and even got a chance to create their own ‘Graffiti Tag’. Following German Unity Day on Tuesday, 3rd October, it was important for the students to understand about the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. The Berlin Wall acted a physical division between two worlds for many years and with its physical and ideological deconstruction, we promote the idea of joining together to create healthier communities for the future.
Secondary Rich Tasks Maths Secondary students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have been investigating some fascinating ideas in maths this term, including opportunities to discover patterns and real world applications of their maths. Students were encouraged to use technology to speed up their calculations. Year 9 especially learned how to use sophisticated Microsoft Excel functions to create detailed and rich spreadsheets, to inform their financial mathematics!

Year 4 Sustainability and Innovation This Term, Year 4 have been studying innovation in their Social Studies lessons. Our overarching theme for Term 1 has been Sustainability, so we issued an optional homework task that merges the two ideas. Students were asked to research someone or something from the UAE that has been designed or campaigned for sustainable change. We were very impressed with the research and work produced by our students. Each student was able to explain who or what they investigated and the positive impact they had on the UAE. Every student who completed a piece of work was given 20 Squirrel Points. One outstanding piece was selected from each class and those students presented their work to Mr. Cocker and Mr. Harper. We are dedicated to celebrating those who go above and beyond in their learning and we are very proud of our Year 4 students.

Dr. Leslie Williams visits BIS Abu Dhabi In November, we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Leslie Williams, the Senior Programme Lead for Social Impact and Giving at Nord Anglia, and the EDIB Global Equality Chairperson. Dr. Williams played a crucial role during her visit, engaging with both our students and staff in various impactful ways. One of the highlights of Dr. Williams’ visit was a workshop for our Year 12 students titled ‘It’s not a joke!’. During this session, students had the opportunity to learn about being illuminators and the importance of the language they use. The workshop aimed to instil a sense of responsibility and awareness, encouraging our students to be positive influences in their community. Across the school, students participated in many different discussions; from our BISAD Diploma to ideas about World Children’s Day to the local community garden. Students were able to gather insightful information on how to bid for a Social Impact Grant to enhance both the local and wider community. These discussions reflect our commitment to fostering a sense of social responsibility and encouraging our students to actively contribute to making a positive impact. As part of her visit, she worked with a group of students and staff to be involved with professional learning sessions for staff. The sessions will focus on Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. Our students are taking leadership roles in driving positive change within our school community and will be leading Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for staff. Dr. Leslie Williams shared her thoughts on her experience at BIS Abu Dhabi: “I want to thank The British International School Abu Dhabi for the warm welcome I received from the students, teachers, staff, and administration. From the meetings I had with a variety of student groups, I learned how they are using their voices to create change so that everyone feels a sense of belonging, developing SDG projects that will bring the community together, and also students offering training on how to use the BISAD Diploma to bring out their full potential.
12
It is evident that there are current and future leaders all around the school, who are supported by faculty and staff working tirelessly to make sure the students’ voices are used in meaningful ways. These educators are empowering the students to be changemakers, and ensuring that they are developing the necessary skills to reach success, and learn more about themselves in the process. I will be excited to learn more about the efforts of these student groups as they take on the challenges that matter most to them and that will have a large impact on the school. BIS Abu Dhabi has so much to be proud of and a so much to look forward to!” We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Leslie Williams for her inspiring visit. We are proud of the enthusiasm and commitment shown by our students and look forward to seeing the positive impact of their initiatives in continuing to create an environment that values diversity, inclusion and social responsibility.

Rubiks Cube Tournament The tournament not only provided a platform for students to showcase their Rubik’s Cube solving skills, but also fostered team spirit and healthy competition. The participants’ determination and enthusiasm was contagious, inspiring others to join in the fun and challenge themselves to learn this mind-boggling puzzle. Towards the end of November, BIS Abu Dhabi held an exciting Rubik’s Cube Tournament, drawing in the talents of 13 students who showcased their impressive problem-solving skills and dexterity. The event was triggered by a Year 6 student’s impressive Rubik’s Cube solve during Term 3s BISADs Got Talent, which ignited a spark of curiosity and determination among the school community.
As the Rubik’s Cube craze continues to sweep through BIS Abu Dhabi, we plan to host another tournament soon, to track the progress of its budding cube solvers. This initiative aims to not only encourage problem-solving skills and dexterity, but also cultivates a supportive community where students can share their passion and inspire each another.
Inspired by this display, our Secondary Librarian took up the challenge of learning to solve the Rubik’s Cube, setting an inspiring example for others. This newfound enthusiasm spread quickly, and soon a group of students eagerly embarked on their Rubik’s Cube solving journey. The participants of the tournament demonstrated remarkable progress, with 10 out of the 13 achieving solve times in under a minute. This was a testament to their dedication and perseverance. The remaining three participants, who started their Rubik’s Cube journey just this September, also showcased impressive skills, achieving solve times in under one minute and thirty seconds.

Year 10 to 13 Spanish Trip to Cuenca From 17th to 25th September, students from Year 10 to 13 set off on an unforgettable Spanish Trip to Cuenca! Mykalia, from 11C, has shared with us an exciting overview of their trip, highlighting all the incredible experiences they had. “The most memorable week of my life was the thrilling trip I took to Spain. Spain is such a beautiful country, every corner held the promise of an unforgettable experience. When my friends and I arrived in Cuenca, I was completely mesmerised by the beauty of the streets. Our teachers provided us with a schedule explaining what we would be doing each day, for the entire week. We were paired up to live with a Spanish family, who were polite and welcoming when we arrived. Every morning at around half past nine, we would either walk or be driven to a language school where the teacher would explain what we would be doing that day.
Every day, we took part in a range of entertaining activities, such as exploring the city, speaking with the locals in a market (also known as “mercadillo”), and visiting an abstract art museum. The canoeing and cooking workshop were my personal favorites. Canoeing along the tranquil waters of the river was a soothing and relaxing experience. I wish I could relive that exact moment again. Additionally, in the cooking workshop, we were given the opportunity to learn the recipe of “tortilla de patata”, which is a traditional dish that tasted absolutely delicious! This trip was an opportunity to not only learn Spanish, but also learn about the Spanish culture and the way they live.” Mykalia, 11C.
Every day after lunch, we would return home to eat with our families and then enjoy the rest of our free time before returning to the language school. This is the time where some of the locals would have their “siesta” (nap) or just resting at home, which usually lasts for about 3 hours.

London Trip From 11th to the 13th of October, Secondary students jetted off to the UK Capital, London. This trip allowed our students to immerse themselves in the rich history, culture, and iconic landmarks of one of the world’s most captivating cities. Day 1: Our adventure began with an evening departure from Abu Dhabi, and we touched down at London Gatwick Airport early the next morning. After settling into our accommodations and enjoying a hearty breakfast, we embarked on a day filled with exploration. Our itinerary included visits to some of London’s most renowned landmarks, including the majestic Big Ben, the historic Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, the tranquil Hyde Park, and the picturesque St. James’ Park. The students were genuinely awed by the grandeur of these famous locations, with one child summarizing the sentiment by saying, “It’s like everything you see in the movies!” In the evening, we gathered for a delightful group dinner before heading to the Adelphi Theatre in London’s vibrant West End. There, we were treated to a remarkable performance of ‘Back to the Future,’ which provided a perfect ending to our busy yet exhilarating first day. Day 2: Our second day began with a visit to the Tower of London. The tower’s fascinating history, which includes its roles as a royal palace, a prison, and a treasury, left an indelible impression on our students. This visit also laid the groundwork for our exploration of London’s dark and enigmatic past as we embarked on the ‘Spooky London Bridge Experience.’ This immersive tour took us on a journey through the tower’s history, recounting its chilling tales over the centuries. Following this, we indulged in a relaxed lunch by the picturesque River Thames. In the evening, we delved deeper into London’s historical tapestry with a guided historical walking tour. Our students were exposed to intriguing stories and little-known facts about the city’s rich past, offering a unique and educational perspective. Day 3: Our final day in London was a blend of leisure and exploration. We explored London’s famous shopping districts, including the vibrant Covent Garden, the stylish Carnaby Street, and the bustling Oxford Street. The students took the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of London’s retail hubs, browsing through the various shops and enjoying the diverse offerings. We also explored some of London’s iconic public spaces, including the bustling Trafalgar Square, the entertainment hub of Leicester Square, and the dazzling lights of Piccadilly Circus. The day ended with a memorable dinner, and we retired early in preparation for our early morning flight back home. Our students’ conduct throughout the trip was commendable, showcasing maturity beyond their years and representing our school with grace and enthusiasm. This excursion provided them with a valuable cultural experience, widening their horizons and deepening their understanding of the world beyond their everyday lives. Our journey to London was a comprehensive exploration of history, culture, and enjoyable experiences. We’re thrilled to continue providing such enriching educational experiences in the future, inspiring our students to be lifelong learners and global citizens.

Garden Club CCA
This term, Year 4 students have been enjoying Garden Club, which is run as a CCA on Wednesdays from 3-4pm. Four Year 13 students are conducting this CCA as part of their IB Diploma CAS Projects, under the supervision of Secondary Teacher, Mrs. Cannon. Students have been tidying, planting, painting and generally enjoying the garden each week, and it is hoped that this will become a muchcherished part of the BIS Abu Dhabi school community. Students have learnt about germination and the importance of nurturing seedlings and, this week, they have been investigating options for composting. The students are working to establish a school composting system that will feed our garden for years to come. Currently, they are growing cucumbers, aubergine, chili, mint, tomatoes and various flowers. There is also a garden of drought resistant plants such as aloe vera and cactus.
Year 6 Trip to EXPO City This engaging and enjoyable learning experience will undoubtedly support them in their upcoming learning and the TED Talks they will be writing and performing on climate change.
On Wednesday, 1st November, Year 6 were lucky enough to visit EXPO City, Dubai, in preparation for the COP28 summit being held there in December. Art & Photography Trip to Apple NAE-UNICEF Summit 2023 In July this year, 2 of our students attended the Nord Anglia Summit in New York. Rafaa in Year 12 and Arya in Year 13. Rafaa and Arya were involved in many activities throughout the week, and had an opportunity to meet ambassadors and other students from around the world. Arya has reflected on her experiences and shared them with us here. Arya and Rafaa are now working closely with Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Brazier to look at ways to continue to raise the profile of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at BIS Abu Dhabi, as well as promote Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities. “On the first day of the Summit (13/07/2023), I had the opportunity to have workshops at the UNICEF Headquarters. This was under the guidance of The UNICEF HQ Youth Advocacy Team. The objective of this session was to provide an opportunity for NAE students to learn about Youth Engagement and Advocacy. The first workshop was titled the One Minute Challenge, allowing me to engage in the critical process of how the UNICEF house functions: with the Voice of the Youth. The SDG given to me and my team was SDG Number 10: Reduced Inequalities. The challenge was to pitch an idea that could be implemented on a school level in under a minute using the format of We will... and Because… The second workshop of the day was with Generation Global, under the guidance of Lisa Petro, Education and Quality Lead. Through interactive exercises and group discussions, I understood the vital role of dialogue in brainstorming solutions to more prominent and personal problems. Moreover, it helped recognise
inclusion’s critical role in problem-solving. The halfway mark workshop was with Kinvara Peterson, the Director of the Worlds largest lesson (WLL). It allowed the students to recognise the interconnectivity between all the SDGs and how they all portray a crucial aspect of humanity and its betterment. Moreover, this contributed to the main event and purpose of the trip, the SDG Conference. Leading up to the SDG Conference (15/07/2023), I learnt about the Social Impact Grants by Nord Anglia, had a UNICEF Career fair with leaders of the different SDGs at UNICEF, and was assigned to a group of students who would present with me on a randomly assigned SDG. These workshops and working hours occurred at NAISNY (the Nord Anglia school in New York). The SDG given to me was SDG Number 2, Zero Hunger, because this SDG is extensive and seemingly difficult to achieve from a school level. The solution I pitched was titled the Food for All Programme. The panel consisted of Andrew Fitzmaurice (CEO), Kinvara Peterson, (UNICEF Advocacy lead), and Dr. Elise Scoff (Nord Anglia Chief Education Officer). At the end of the Summit, I received a Learner Ambition Award for being ´Curious´, acknowledging my reflective nature regarding the SDGs. I was one of five students awarded from among 125 students. Moreover, I was appreciated for contributing to the Generation Global workshop leading to a personal meeting with Lisa Ptero regarding my initiatives with the Inclusivity Club at BIS Abu Dhabi.” Arya, Year 13

Arabic Poetry Competition BIS Abu Dhabi and our Arabic department take great pride in acknowledging the achievements of students Noora Y11, Fatema Y10, Haya Y5, and Mohamed Y7, who admirably represented the school at the Arabic Poetry Competition on Tuesday, 21st November. Demonstrating confidence and compassion, they presented a poem to esteemed Emirates figures in the Arabic literary sphere. Our students successfully qualified for the semi-finals of the Emirates NBD ‘Poetry for All’ competition in Abu Dhabi. Their accomplishment is a testament to their resilience and readiness to embrace challenges. We wish them all the best in qualifying for the finals.
Eco Enterprise Coming together as a community for a cause larger than ourselves is an important aspect of our school’s values: Kindness, Respect, and Honesty. This inspired Rena, Yumna, and the rest of our Year 13 IB Business students to plan and host the largest student-led charity event in BIS Abu Dhabi’s history, ‘Eco-Enterprise’, as part of their CAS project. Rena and Yumna, Year 13 IB Business students, have shared their experience of their event. “Our Eco-Enterprise event that took place on Thursday, 12th October, included a day full of demonstration of leadership skills from students of all ages, who ran stalls and activities. From photo booths and jewelry making stalls to obstacle courses and “Sponge the Teacher”, the day was filled with excitement and unity as students partook in the vast range of creative activities available. The field and cage of the school displayed an array of colorful bunting and banners, as well as many student-constructed stalls, which required weeks of hands-on construction and teamwork. The fulfillment of educating children in a fun manner was rewarding as smiles were seen throughout the entirety of the event.’
We incorporated a ticketing system, that allowed the circulation of multiple-coloured tickets to prevent the wastage of paper, keeping the event in line with the Global Sustainability Goals. The concept of recycling was promoted throughout the event, as props for stalls such as old cans and scrap paper were used, to draw attention to Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which BIS Abu Dhabi has been actively working to achieve. Months of preparation, which at times was stressful and difficult to navigate, paid off as we together as the BIS Abu Dhabi community raised over a whopping 20,000AED. This value showcases the strength in unity and reflects the students’ desire to contribute to bettering the world around us, allowing the less fortunate to receive the same opportunities that we have the privilege of experiencing. We hope this inspired students to initiate such events in the near future, keeping the spirit of collaboration, selflessness and leadership alive!” By Rena & Yumna

Beyond the Classroom
From Internship to Impact: A Year 11 Student’s GIS Adventure in Conservation Meet Diana Vasile, a dynamic Year 11 student whose educational journey transcends the conventional boundaries of textbooks and classrooms. Introduced to the captivating world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) during a week of work experience in Year 10, Diana’s exploration was ignited by the guidance of Ms. Juett and the encouragement of Dr. Haïfa Ben-Romdhane, a Professor in Environmental Engineering and Geomatics at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. This encounter blossomed into a further remarkable four-month project, culminating in the creation of a compelling StoryMap that intricately weaves together environmental narratives using GIS technology. Inspired by her initial success with “The Amazon Rainforest - SDGs in Action,” Diana’s journey took an unexpected turn when Dr. Haïfa Ben-Romdhane proposed her to join the collaboration with the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR). Little did she know, this collaboration not only became a testament to her dedication and proficiency, but also an entry into the prestigious 2023 ArcGIS* StoryMaps Competition. Join us as we delve into Diana’s transformative experiences, where passion, technology, and environmental advocacy converge in a narrative that goes beyond the ordinary. * What is ArcGIS? ArcGIS is a geospatial software for viewing, editing, managing and analysing geographic data. The software suite allows you to create maps, perform spatial analysis and manage data. The focus for ArcGIS is on location intelligence and analytics.
My Adventure in GIS I’m Diana, a Year 11 student, and I want to express my gratitude to Ms. Juett for connecting me with Dr. Haïfa Ben-Romdhane, a Professor in Environmental Engineering and Geomatics at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. Dr. Ben-Romdhane offered me the chance to do my week of work experience on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), last June 2023. As a student of Geography and Computer Science, this was a fantastic opportunity. Dr. Haïfa Ben-Romdhane facilitated my entire internship, from settling in, to the daily activities utilising GIS.

After creating my own StoryMap on the Amazon Rainforest (an open project which I had decided I would link to the Climate lessons in the iGCSE curriculum), Dr. Ben-Romdhane suggested collaborating with the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) to showcase their conservation efforts through ArcGIS, utilising geographical data to effectively convey their endeavours in sustainable conservation practices. This coincided with the ArcGIS 2023 StoryMap Competition, so the team and I decided to submit it under the “A story about an Indigenous or locally led project” track.
Beyond the Classroom Collaborations Collaborating with DDCR and Sorbonne University, I worked on the project for a period of four months (June- October), gaining hands-on experience with GIS and learning from experts in the field. The experience taught me teamwork, meeting deadlines, handling spatial data, and creating an engaging StoryMap structure. Despite challenges in map creation, the team’s support led to a successful project. Personal Growth While I have encountered specific processes in class (e.g. teamwork, infographic designing, text editing), the internship provided realworld insights into wildlife distribution patterns and sustainable management intricacies. The constant refining and updating of the StoryMap, based on client feedback, showcased the challenges and growth in a professional setting. I believe the main challenge and hence aspect that brought forth most growth and development has been to create and fine-tune the maps embedded on the website. To view her map, visit: https://shorturl.at/nvJN0
What message would you like to share with your fellow students and readers? Apart from now forming one of my highlights of Year 10, work experience has given me an opportunity to explore possible career options and comprehend the application of schooltaught skills and subjects to the real world. I believe it is an incredible opportunity all students should grasp! Theory can only take you so far. Work experience is essential!
In partnership with the DDCR Basil Roy, Conservation Officer at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) expresses his appreciation on Diana’s work: ‘I am thoroughly impressed with Diana’s outstanding project for the 2023 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition. Diana created a captivating DDCR GIS StoryMap, incorporating satellite imagery, audio-visual content, and field data to showcase the reserve’s conservation initiatives and biodiversity. Her contribution greatly enhances public awareness, and we are now featuring Diana’s StoryMap at the DDCR Visitor Center and on our website. We look forward to visiting BIS Abu Dhabi in the new year to engage with your students, showcase, and discuss this inspiring project, fostering a spirit of positive change for the future.’
Next steps at BIS Abu Dhabi Victoria Juett, Assistant Head Teacher, remarks: ‘Diana’s impact extends beyond personal success; she is making a tangible difference to the UAE’s country and culture. We proudly celebrate her successes as a beacon of inspiration for future students. Furthermore, as a direct result of Diana’s internship and in alignment with the school’s ambition to embed sustainable education, plans are underway to incorporate the teaching of technical skills using ArcGIS into the KS3 curriculum. Diana will play a pivotal role in supporting this initiative, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. Join us in recognising Diana’s remarkable journey and the positive impact she continues to make on both the educational landscape and the environment of the UAE.’

UAE Flag Day
On Friday, 3rd November, BIS Abu Dhabi celebrated Flag Day with a whole-school gathering under the flag. Alan Cocker, Associate Principal, spoke to our students about the symbolic importance of flags in bringing people together. Values such as courage, hope, and honesty are represented in the colours of the Emirati flag and are values which he suggested we should aim for in our daily lives. Following Mr. Cocker’s address, the flag was raised by four Emirati students - Saif Al S., Mohamed Al A., Mohamed Al S. and Hamdan Al H. – and the whole school community sang the National Anthem together.

Visual Arts Trip to Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2023 We are excited to share the experiences of our Year 10 Visual Arts students who recently embarked on an inspiring journey to the 2023 Abu Dhabi Art Fair at the prestigious Manarat Al Saadiyat Art Gallery. The trip was a fascinating exploration of creativity and expression, offering our Fine Art and Photography students an important and informative opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of contemporary art. At the heart of the visit were stands exhibiting a diverse array of artwork from exceptional artists from around the world. Our students had the privilege of a guided private tour where the concepts and intentions of several artists were explored in more depth, enabling students to witness firsthand the motivations and craftsmanship of these creators, and to gain more insight into the varied and thoughtprovoking perspectives that the Visual Arts can offer. Whilst touring the exhibition, students got to see the work of Qader Al Rais, one of the most celebrated and world-renowned Emirati artists and even got to meet and have their photograph taken with his son, Musab Alrais, who was also exhibiting his exceptional work at the Fair. One of the highlights of the trip was a practical art workshop inspired by the innovative work of Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim. His captivating ‘Elevation’ installation at the Art Fair and its focus on ‘playfulness, contemplation, and renewed connections to the world around us’, was used as a starting point. During the workshop, students experimented with colour, patterns, and shapes inspired by Ibrahim’s masterpieces. The result? Each student crafted their very own take-away Tote Bag, a tangible expression of their creative journey and a meaningful memento from this enriching experience.
The Year 10 Visual Arts Trip to the Abu Dhabi Art Fair at Manarat Al Saadiyat was undeniably a culturally enriching experience. Our students returned with not only newfound practical skills (and a personalised Tote Bag!), but also a broader perspective on the power of art to inspire, connect, and transform lives. We are immensely proud of their enthusiasm, creativity, and the positive energy they brought back to our school community as a result of our cultural visit and look forward to seeing how what they have seen inspires their future art making practice. “It was great, honestly, I was very inspired. To be seeing such original artworks made me want to create my own pieces. I found the art very beautiful and meaningful and to be experiencing this with fellow art students and doing the workshop was a great opportunity.” -Türkan (Y10)
“The trip was great! There was a variety of different artworks from artists around the world and it was really inspiring. I will definitely use what I saw to help me develop ideas for my future artworks. Overall, the trip was really enjoyable and fun.” -Stefaan (Y10)
In addition to the visual delights at Manarat Al Saadiyat, our students also had the privilege of attending the Berklee Abu Dhabi. Here, they were treated to an extraordinary installation by the world-renowned choreographer William Forsythe. The installation, a mesmerising blend of movement and artistry called ‘Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time’, captivated our students’ senses when they actively engaged in an interactive and immersive movement-based activity, adding a dynamic and participatory dimension to their artistic exploration.

Sport Each year is a different story, with new players arriving and old players leaving. The squad this year was made up of students from Year 11 to Year 13, with new combinations and new positions in some sports due to injuries before and during the tournament. The event is both mentally and physically demanding, with wake up calls at 5.00am for breakfast at 5.45am, followed by a bus ride to the venue and an arduous set of games within the pool stages, followed by the play-off games. By the end of the day, athletes find themselves fatigued, emotionally drained, and exhausted, knowing that the entire process must be repeated for the second day. The BIS Abu Dhabi squad were a tower of strength for each other during the course of the two-day tournament. Every student made a commitment to dig deep, play fairly and represent the whole BIS Abu Dhabi community to the very best of their ability. The boys secured the Gold medal in the football competition, while the girls earned the Bronze. Additionally, the boys claimed the 6th position in volleyball, and the girls achieved the 7th spot in netball. Overall BIS Abu Dhabi were joint 2nd on points but with medal placings came 3rd overall. It was a joyous occasion and a sweet victory. Special congratulations to Leandro for being awarded the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in football across 14 schools for the second year in a row.
Dubai 7s On the weekend of 1st December, our joint BIS Abu Dhabi and NAS Dubai Nord Anglia Education Rugby Team participated in Dubai 7s. This is the first time two Nord Anglia Education schools have come together to form a ‘representative’ team and we are incredibly proud of all the boys who were selected to represent the school and the Nord Anglia Education group on the pitch. Day one: The boys started off Friday with their pool games against BSAK, JESS and Dubai Hurricanes. They had a nervous start against BSAK with it being their first proper game together and lost 14-7 to BSAK. They then started with a more gutsy performance against JESS, but ran out of steam at the end losing 21-5. In our final pool game against Dubai Hurricanes, they started to attack with more venom and show what they can actually do, but didn’t stick to the systems and therefore left a lot of tries out there. They only ran out winners 5-0.
37
Sport Day two (knockout rugby): They started the morning on pitch 2 against Kings School Al Barsha, where they were ruthless in attack and defence. They played together as a team and supported each other well, running out winners in a 33-7 point game. On to the semi finals they played against Repton Dubai. They were going to have to dig deep for this one and work hard as a team. Their defence was resolute and was able to put pressure on the Repton team to make mistakes and capitalise on them to score 3 tries. Final score 17-5 to NAE. Plate final: On pitch 2, where the day started, is where the day would finish for the boys against the WSO Falcons. It took a few minutes to get into the game, but after 2 tries were scored by NAE, the tries just kept coming. Excellent work rate and support as a squad helped them win the plate final with an impressive 40-7 win. This is a huge statement for the future showing that we are a team that should be competing for the cup.
Where are they Now?
The most important thing is the boys had a great weekend and showcased themselves, their schools, and their families in the best way possible. They are a credit to their respective schools and it is the start of something exciting for the Nord Anglia Education Rugby programme. What made BIS Abu Dhabi special for you?
BIS Abu Dhabi Graduate Class of 2021
Ali Qureshi
Dubai 7s
BIS Abu Dhabi is a school that is dear to me. As my first and only school in Abu Dhabi, my entire Primary and Secondary education took place in this school. I am one of the few ‘BISAD babies’ - who joined at its opening in 2009 – to graduate here. Along the way, I had the opportunity to acquaint with many friends and teachers. Nevertheless, the memories created remain whenever I visit in my holidays. Which school club, activity, trip or project inspired you the most? I think the most unique project I completed in BIS Abu Dhabi was the TEDxYouth event in March 2019. This was a memorable evening, involving brilliant student speakers and profound speeches. I learnt many lessons from this event, including my own potential in public speaking, as as well as the importance of preparation before any endeavour. Because of this, I have the confidence to speak publicly in university, whether in group presentations, or introducing speakers and making announcements during societal events. What is the most important lesson you learned at BIS Abu Dhabi?
38
One of the qualities of BIS Abu Dhabi is that it offers the IB diploma for higher secondary education. This is a vigorous two-year course involving six subjects, each with their own coursework projects, and other side projects including research and extra-curricular activities. Thus, all aspects of a student’s development are targeted; the result is a rounded student ready to tackle the multi-faceted challenges of university.
Where are they Now? Hence, the IB diploma taught me the lesson of balance in one’s life. This encompasses balancing academic, physical, social, and servicing others. This has manifested in my university life by focusing not just on academic study, but also physical wellbeing through sports, social interactions, and providing service to others through involving myself in medical revision societies. What ambitions did BIS Abu Dhabi inspire in you? The current position I hold is a result of the invaluable contributions from many individuals throughout my academic journey. Among these groups, I wish to express profound gratitude to my teachers. They were pivotal in pushing me to excel in all my subjects. With their ongoing dedication, I achieved grades that surpassed my initial expectations. Which university and degree did you choose, and why? I am incredibly grateful to have been accepted into Medicine at Cardiff University. My decision to study Medicine can be attributed to multiple factors. It was a combination of personal passion of the subject and observing inspiring doctors during work experience, in treating my family, and in bearing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having studied medicine now for almost three years, I can confidently express my satisfaction with my choice. Medicine is a profession that marries the crucial elements of patient care, encompassing the understanding of medical issues through knowledge of the human body, as well as the equally important human aspect through empathy and interpersonal skills. How did the IB help your experience at university? One of the lessons that I learned from the IB Diploma was independence. For example, each subject in IB has a coursework element in addition to the extended essay research project. This required dedicating numerous hours of self-study in parallel with revising for written exams. University has many similar elements to IB which require skills such as independence, good time management, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. For example, a university student has to juggle attending lectures with self-study, preparing and buying food, laundering clothes, keeping fit, and spending time with friends. Firstyear students frequently fall short in at least one of these aspects due to the leap between school and university. In my case, IB softened the blow and made the transition to university easier.
Where are they Now? Furthermore, the IB has a large focus on essay writing and research projects. This was particularly helpful for my degree as I had already learnt all the basics of writing research when it came to completing similar projects in university. This also aligned with my aspirations to conduct research during my medical career. What has been your proudest moment since graduating? One of my proudest moments in university occurred this year when I started my hospital placement. To give some context, the first two years of my course involves learning the fundamental science behind medicine with little patient contact, then the remaining three years will primarily comprise of clinical placements in hospital and GP. This moment occurred during one of my initial weeks in placement when I was asked by a consultant to independently see a patient and report back to them. It was at this moment that I realised that I was doing the job of a doctor. I recalled all the effort from myself and those around me for the past few years. This included studying for IB to meet the grade requirements, writing the personal statement, preparing for admissions tests, and interview preparation. Then, upon entering university, my time was spent in patient communications skills sessions and the numerous lectures to study from. All my past efforts culminated to allow this particular moment to happen. What are you doing now? I am currently in my third year of Medicine at Cardiff University in the UK – a Russel Group university. My learning has now shifted from the traditional lectures to learning from hospital placements via observing and participating in clinical procedures. In this environment, you learn on your feet rather than from reading in a classroom. I am thus looking forward to the years to come.
