I am delighted to be able to welcome all students, coaches, parents and supporters to the 2023 Under 11 BSME Games here at the British International School Abu Dhabi.

BSME is a wonderful organisation which helps bring students and schools together to benefit all involved. Their ongoing efforts provide students with opportunities which they would not otherwise have and which single schools could not provide. Our sincere thanks to them for everything they do for schools in this region.

This week sees 360 competitors from 10 schools come together for 3 days of activities. Every one of the students will have trained hard and will be aiming to do their very best (and perhaps beat their very best) in the competitions to come. We wish them all success in this. Not everyone will win, but if we give our best, both as an individual or as a teammate, we know we could not have done any more.

Please also take the opportunities presented this week to also extend the hand of friendship to all. Sport is the focus that brings us all together, but let us also enjoy the company and camaraderie this brings. Let us depart at the end of the week with all of us having done our bit to make these Games as good as they can possibly be for everyone else too.

The British International School Abu Dhabi is very proud to host this year’s Games as Sport is an integral part of our school. Welcome all athletes, coaches and families to BIS Abu Dhabi. As a school community, we are very proud to be hosting The BSME games and are looking forward to celebrating your success over the three days of events.

At BIS Abu Dhabi we are very fortunate to have outstanding facilities that can accommodate the whole of the games on one site. Being able to hear and see goals being scored, personal best’s being achieved, and baskets being dunked in from around different parts of the school site will create a superb atmosphere.

During the three days of competition, athletes will face a variety of different challenges. Some will be physical, some will be psychological, some challenges will be larger than others, some will be individual, and some will challenge the whole squad. All will require resilience, determination and support from friends to overcome. This is what the BSME games offers; the opportunity to challenge and test yourself against others and against yourself, whilst having a good time doing it.

As a school community we will support and assist you in any way we can to make sure your BSME games experience is one you will remember for a long time.

Players’ Code of Behaviour

• Be a good sport and play for enjoyment.

• Strive for personal excellence.

• Work hard for your team as well as yourself.

• Treat all teammates and opponents as you enjoy being treated yourself.

• Control your behaviour on and off the field.

Parents’ Code of Behaviour

• Encourage participation by your children.

• Provide a model of good sportsmanship for your child to copy.

• Be courteous in your communication with players, teachers, game officials and sport administrators.

• Encourage honest effort, skilled performance and team loyalty.

• Make any new parents feel welcome on all occasions.

• Do not interfere with the conduct of any events.

Spectators’ Code of Behaviour

• Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour.

• Remember children play for enjoyment. Don’t let your behaviour detract from their enjoyment.

• Let game officials conduct events without interference.

• Support skilled performances and team play with generous applause.

• Demonstrate respect for opposing players and their supporters.

Team Members’ Code of Behaviour

• Compete by the competition conditions and rules.

• Never argue with the Judge’s, Referee or Umpire’s decision.

• Control your temper - no criticism by word or gesture.

• Work equally hard for yourself and your team.

• Going to bed at a reasonable hour will assist your own and your team’s performance.

• Be a good sport. Encourage and support your own team members.

• Co-operate with your coach and teammates. Show respect for your opponents and their skills.

• Be friendly to all participants.

Team Officials’/Teachers’/Coaches’ Code of Behaviour

• Ensure that your behaviour at all times does not bring the name of “School Sport” into disrepute.

• Avoid over playing the talented players. All players need and deserve appropriate time.

• Develop team respect for the opponents as well as for the officials and opposing coaches.

• Compliment participants on their efforts.

• Condemn unsporting behaviour.

• Ensure that your behaviour is consistent with the principles of good sporting behaviour.

• Refrain from criticism of or reaction to the umpire’s/referee’s judgement and decision.

• Maintain a standard of dress appropriate to the presentation of the team.

• Refrain from overzealous coaching from the side line.

Sanctions

• The Games Coordinator will speak to the staff member who is in charge of the school.

• The Games Coordinator will then issue an official warning and record notes surrounding the incident. (The notes will be passed onto the BSME Event Coordinator after the event who will send a follow up email the Principal of the school copying in the Head of PE).

• The Games Coordinator will ask the individual to leave the ground.

• The BSME Event Coordinator will keep a record of all sanctions.

Scoring System

Football, Netball and Basketball

Each team will play teams in their pool. The teams will be seeded and entered into the playoff phase. The play off phase will determine the overall ranking. Teams who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd will receive a trophy and medals at the end of each day. There will be one team in each competition that will be awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy. There will be one vote per school which will be taken during the tournament. The most talented player from each competition will receive the Player of the Tournament, which will be voted by the officials.

Athletics and Swimming

Athletes/Swimmers will receive points for each event. Teams will be ranked on the total number of points gained. Medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be given for individual events as well as trophies for overall positions.

Fair Play Award

There will be one team overall voted for the Fair Play Award for the BSME U11 Games. Votes will be collected on the final day and the award will be presented during the Gala Dinner.

Final Games Positioning

These points will accumulate over the three days of competition to complete the overall standings for each team.

Al Yasmina Academy is delighted to be participating in the U11 BSME Games again this year. This is the pinnacle of our sporting calendar and we are excited to see if we can continue our development from previous years. The opportunity to participate in these games and compete against some of the best schools and most talented students in the Middle East is a fantastic opportunity.

Amity International School, Abu Dhabi | UAE

Amity International School Abu Dhabi is part of the Amity Education Group, a not-for-profit Education Foundation with campuses across the world.

Our school was founded in September 2015 as a small primary school providing the National Curriculum of England and Wales for boys and girls. British International School Riyadh (BISR) is an international co-educational school located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The British School of Kuwait

The British School of Kuwait (BSK) traces its origins to 1978 when Mme Vera and Mr. Sadiq Al-Mutawa established a small kindergarten that became known as The Sunshine School. Currently, there are over 3200 students from Reception to Year 13 at BSK. They come from more than 70 countries and follow the National Curriculum of England through to GCSE, IGCSE, AS, and A Level qualifications. BSK is a founding member of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME), a founding member of the Council of International Schools (CIS), a founding member of the Association of British Schools Overseas (AoBSO), and a member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).

Physical Education and Sport play an integral role in developing the school’s vision of providing a world-class British education. Continued hard work and dedication to practice has brought about success in the previous BSME competitions, achieving medals in basketball, football netball, and individual athletics events.

These are the first BSME games for the majority of our students, they are all very excited and thrilled to be a part of the BSME sporting family. The enthusiasm of the BSK students will echo through the arena, and we are excited to be here in Abu Dhabi for this prestige event.

Dubai British school Jumeirah Park are super excited to be participating in the U11 BSME games after a few years away. Our dedicated squad have been working hard since the start of the academic year and their passion and commitment has been evident in every schedule training session. It has been a pleasure to watch them persist towards individual goals while develop a team collective, and they have filled our school with pride and spirit. Regardless of the outcome, we know that the BSME will create friendships and lifelong memories for many of our students and we can’t wait to see them perform. We are with you, we are one!

El Alsson School, Cairo | Egypt

This is the first overseas sports’ trip that El Alsson has taken since before the Covid epidemic; we know this because the last Under 11 large games were cancelled, I think, the night before our students were due to fly; our squad were distraught. The present squad are looking forward to this trip just as much as the previous bunch. Their aim is to play sport and compete fiercely and fairly; a good deal of preparation has gone into honing basketball, football, netball and swimming skills, and their athletic prowess. Hopefully, they can bring their best form and performances to the games and do this in a determined and sportsperson like way. Meeting new people and friends is also a very important part of our trip. They are also keen to immerse and experience the Abu Dhabi culture and to have Abu Dhabi experience a bit of theirs. We are grateful to the BSME and the British International School Abu Dhabi for hosting and inviting us to these games.

Horizon English School is excited to be involved in the U11 BSME Games, stepping up to the large school games having undergone recent expansion. We are hoping to take our excellent history of success, sportsmanship and determination into the Games in Abu Dhabi. Sunmarke School, Dubai | UAE

Sunmarke School is an accredited by British Schools in the Middle East, which opened in 2016 and has achieved an excellent British School Overseas status.
