ANNUAL REPORT
26 THE MUSTANG MESSENGER

President’s Letter Dr. John Bardhardt President/CEO Dear Bishop McNamara High School Family & Friends, We have had a terrific start to our 2020/2021 school year and it is due entirely to the tireless pursuit of academic and spiritual excellence by our faculty, students, and supportive community. In a year thus far defined by crisis, our Mustangs have stepped up with their ability to innovate in the margins and redefine what it means to be a servant leader. At the time of this letter, our students remain learning in a virtual setting with the majority of our faculty and administrators also working remotely. The ability of our Bishop McNamara family to serve each of our student’s unique needs has never been more apparent. The theme of this season’s Mustang Messenger is to consider the greatness of our mission. There is no place where this consideration is greater than right here on campus. This fall our administrators quickly realized a full enrollment and committed significant time and resources to reorient our virtual learning model to support every student. Additionally, our parents, alumni, and local businesses and foundations stepped up to support families hit hard economically by COVID by raising over $170,000 since the inception of our Bishop McNamara Family Support Fund. This dual effort - re-envisioning our virtual learning model and mobilizing our community to support students’ families hit hard by the pandemic, is yet another proof point that our service to families is the mission we seek to fulfill both in the classroom and in our giving. We are also actively planning for the future. There is no greater time than now, in the middle of a global health pandemic, to invest our creative energy into reimagining our approach to science and technology instruction. The La Reine Science & Innovation Center remains our catalyst for cultivating the future health and science leaders of tomorrow, solving future health emergencies like the one we are in now. While our new building is exciting in its own right, we are also rebuilding our curriculum and programming to ensure our students are well informed on career pathways before leaving our school. I recently announced the support of the Alice B. & James A. Clark Foundation and their $1,000,000 investment in our vision for a greater tomorrow. It is investments like these that remind me of the power of community. I am fully convinced that there has never been a better time to be a Bishop McNamara Mustang and it is this forward posture as a school that will ensure we continue serving God’s mission for many generations to come. Your receipt of this season’s Mustang Messenger demonstrates your history of giving or support of our program. Thank you. Our needs remain great but never in excess of our capacity to support. As you are able, please continue to provide for the long-term viability of our school, our students, and our mission. In the concluding words of Blessed Basile Moreau, “This is what you can and should do for your students if you really are zealous for their salvation. Hurry then; take up this work of resurrection, never forgetting that the special end of your institute is, before all, to sanctify youth…” Please, do not be a stranger! The next time you are near campus, stop by and see what we are up to or drop me an email to say hello.

Chairman's Letter Robert N. Summers ’86 Chair, BMHS Board of Directors
Greetings to All Members of the Bishop McNamara Family, Who could have imagined that just under a year ago our lives would forever be changed and that COVID-19 would impact our daily activities? This being our new normal, I pray that you and your families are doing well and continue to adjust as the world navigates this global pandemic. As the 2020-21 school year is underway, Bishop McNamara High School continues to monitor federal, state and county guidelines to ensure that we are proceeding appropriately to account for the wellbeing of our faculty, staff, students, and their families. I am sure every member of our Bishop McNamara family looks forward to the day when we can return to campus. However, I am also confident that we all want to do so when we feel secure this can be done in a safe and sensible fashion. In the meantime, Bishop McNamara’s goal is to provide students with a high quality education that is our habit and commitment. To that point, Bishop McNamara was an early adapter and national leader in the transition to virtual learning. Beginning in the latter months of the 2019-2020 school year, staff and faculty members undertook extraordinary efforts to ensure that all students were afforded the necessary tools to work remotely. These efforts have carried over to the current academic year as the school welcomed its new President/CEO Dr. John Barnhardt. The Board of Directors has been pleased with the direction of the school under the leadership of Dr. Barnhardt. He has transitioned seamlessly into this role and has a great team to support him and his vision for the school. Part of that vision is the continuation of the legacy of Bishop McNamara and LaReine High Schools with the future LaReine Science & Innovation Center. Once constructed, the center will afford our students with classes and programs that will challenge, shape, and prepare tomorrow’s innovators. Dr. Barnhardt and his team are committed to seeing that this next generation facility offers all the necessary programs that will become a first of its kind within Prince George’s and neighboring counties. The Board of Directors looks forward to what is in store for Bishop McNamara’s future. We know COVID-19 continues to be a challenge, however, Bishop McNamara is successfully addressing these challenges. The school remains committed to being a leader and model for secondary schools within and outside of our region. With the eyes of faith, we consider the greatness of our mission, and we look forward with zeal to advancing our vision to form empowered leaders, inspired by the Gospel, who transform the world. We anticipate the day we can all safely convene and truly embody the spirit that characterizes our community as together, we are one #BMHSFamily. I hope to see you soon!
Respectfully,
Robert N. Summers ’86

MUSTANG MOMENTS
On Friday, August 21, 2020, affectionately called Freshman Friday, more than 20 Bishop McNamara faculty and staff members - led by President/CEO Dr. John Barnhardt and Principal Dian Carter - ventured out to deliver Mustang Spirit Gear to members of the Class of 2024. A few days before the deliveries, each student and their family was asked to share where they would be “quarantined” that Friday. Freshman and their families were asked to be “camera ready” and were given a window of time when their special delivery would arrive. All social distancing rules applied and none of the school’s staff went into freshman homes. They traveled all around the Metropolitan Washington region. When students and their families ventured out to greet them, gleeful joy was the typical response. Welcome to your #BMHSFamily Class of 2024! n

During the month of October, Bishop McNamara High School honored Respect Life Month as a Catholic school and supported National Bullying Prevention Month. Respect Life Month in the Catholic Church reminds the faithful and all people of good will to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During this month, the Catholic Church asks all people to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life as we are one human family. National Bullying Prevention Month encourages schools, communities, and organizations to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying and put an end to hatred and racism by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of all forms of bullying on all children of all ages. Both of these month long awareness campaigns were discussed and reflected upon during Mustang Mix, which is held virtually every Maroon day by faculty and staff moderators placed into groups of approximately twenty students from each grade level. n On Thursday, October 8, the Fine Arts Department virtually hosted as part of its 2020-2021 Guest Artists Series Karla Garcia. Originally from Oxon Hill, Maryland, Karla made her Broadway debut at age twenty in Hot Feet, a dance musical directed by Maurice Hines. Karla went on to perform in the national tours of Wicked and Addams Family followed by other Broadway performances such as West Side Story, Gigi, and Hamilton: An American Musical. Karla made history as the first Filipina cast member in Broadway’s Hamilton. n
August through November, Bishop McNamara High School operated in Stage 0 - fully virtual. For more on this story, please read the feature article titled Bishop McNamara High School: Remaining Committed to Excellence in a Virtual World. n On September 28, President/CEO Dr. John Barnhardt announced that Bishop McNamara High School received a major investment in The Faith. aC Interview with New President/CEO Around Campus
Dr. John Barnhardt
With the official transition of school leadership to new President/CEO Dr. John Barnhardt in June, 2020, he has undertaken this important leadership role during one of the most unique moments in Bishop McNamara’s history due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The editorial staff of the Mustang Messenger wanted to learn more about Dr. Barnhardt’s transition into his new role as President/CEO and he was kind enough to share his thoughts about it and the challenges of operating a school in the midst of a global pandemic.
What have been the most impactful moments since your tenure began as President/CEO of Bishop McNamara High School? Two moments stand out in my first few months at Bishop McNamara. First, I visited Mrs. Diehlmann’s virtual class in the first few weeks of learning. It was here that I first saw students fully embracing the virtual world and a world-class educator who had adapted her entire approach to instruction. It was also here that I first felt a strong sense of belonging in the virtual world! This visit gave me tremendous confidence and gratitude to belong to a community that was selflessly dedicated to supporting one another. The second moment came during a zoning and planning call with Prince George’s County officials. On this call, I was advocating for building permits for our La Reine Science & Innovation Center. Our advocacy was successful and permitting has moved forward, but the highlight was hearing every official’s sentiments about why this project is important to Prince George’s County. Every member of the planning board had a memory and important investment in our school. It is moments like this and connections like these that make our work gratifying!
At a time of many unique challenges regarding the operation of a school in the midst of a pandemic, what challenge has the school community met that reveals the fulfilment of our mission to educate hearts and minds in a dynamic, inclusive Catholic school community rooted in the Holy Cross tradition? One of the greatest challenges in this pandemic is the establishment and strengthening of our community, virtually. An investment in Bishop McNamara is significant. Especially for our new parents, I am in awe and full of gratitude for the trust and confidence that our new families have given our school community. Moreover, many of our important “community-building” events like Back to School Night and most recently our Open House event, have been delivered entirely virtually. Despite the challenge of building a community without being in person, our family is thriving. Parents, students, and employees are finding ways to continue building relationships and this alone is an inspiration.

I am most thankful for the overwhelming support that every member of our community has afforded me.

The second, closely behind moving to a virtual world, is to finish planning for the La Reine Science & Innovation Center. This work is on going and I couldn’t be more excited for what is to come for our students.
“

••
Our main priorities are to understand and meet the needs of our community. This is no small undertaking. School visioning and day to day operations as we’ve known them for the last 200 years of schools operating in this country, are different. As a result, I’ve directed our team to review policies, practices, and beliefs about every aspect of our program. This year, we’ve reviewed and redesigned our enrollment process, our counseling support, our athletics and fine arts programming, our daily operations, our virtual classroom model, and every one of our community events and celebrations.
••
•• ••
What thing, event, or person are you most grateful for since joining the Bishop McNamara family? I am most thankful for the overwhelming support that every member of our community has afforded me. Whether it is our administrative team in their grace and patience with me learning new systems, our parent community in actively welcoming me and my entire family into their own, or even our students who have actively sought out partnership, I could not be more appreciative for the virtual welcomeparty that I’ve had these past few months.
Is there an administrator, faculty member, or staff person at BMHS you would like to thank? Why? I am most thankful for our teachers. Teaching is an art and our teachers are masters in the art. That said, in March of 2020, the artform changed with no heads up or the ability to plan. Our teachers are working harder than they ever have before and they are Bishop McNamara’s most valuable resource. There is no amount of time off, coffee cards, or recognition that could even come close to fully realizing the important role they play in our successful virtual school model. To our teachers, thank you. Every day you make our vision a reality and there are 850 students and 135 employees who are thankful for your expertise and ability to adapt in a moment’s notice.
What advice would you like to offer Bishop McNamara students who are struggling in the midst of this pandemic? Call a friend! Whether it is your best friend, a counselor,
a favorite teacher, or me, remember that you are not alone and we are stronger together. Research has shown that processing trauma or stress as a community is more effective and healthy than processing alone. You are not alone, you have me and your entire McNamara family, please call on us!
What more have you learned about yourself since you became President/CEO of Bishop McNamara High School? I’ve learned how much I rely on personal relationships in my professional career. I am an extrovert by nature - I get my energy from the community. Moving into Bishop McNamara and supporting strategic initiatives and making important decisions without an existing relationship or a chance to stop in visit with students, families, and faculty, has been hard! n

With the eyes of faith, consider the greatness of your mission. Blessed Basile Moreau
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Faith. Mission. These two words always resonate very strongly at Bishop McNamara High School, but particularly this school year. As the school has actively monitored the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic since its first reported case in the United States in January, 2020 and throughout the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year till now, its ongoing impact has inaugurated a time that is unlike any other in the school’s five decade history. With the transition of school leadership from President/CEO Dr. Marco J. Clark ’85 to President/CEO Dr. John Barnhardt, he, along with the Board of Directors, Principal Dian Carter, and in coordination with the administration, faculty, and staff, have offered a virtual education that is rooted in the school’s Catholic and Holy Cross faith and identity while advancing its mission to educate hearts and minds. More than 180 years ago the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross Blessed Basile Moreau said in Christian Education, “How we educate the mind will change with the times; how we cultivate the heart is and will remain timeless.” Never has this statement been more true at Bishop McNamara High School than in 2020. The school remains committed to excellence in a virtual world. During the summer months that marked the transition from one school year to the next, the entire Bishop McNamara community administration, faculty, staff, parents, and students - discerned and absorbed all that they had learned about what it means to teach and learn virtually during the latter months of the prior school year. The incorporation of this information served as a basis to plan for a successful 2020-2021 school year. Always placing the safety and well-being of the school community at the forefront of decision making in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this time served to prepare the community for a variety of contingencies. This included how teaching and learning could be conducted virtually for an extended period of time during the forthcoming school year. Over the summer, President Barnhardt and Principal Carter formed several “Contingency Planning Teams” among different stakeholder groups within the Bishop McNamara family. The goal was to solicit their input about how to reopen the physical campus at various levels. With the help of these teams, the school developed various “stage models” to govern the operation of Bishop McNamara High School during the 2020-2021 school year. After gathering a lot of valuable input from these stakeholder groups, four stages of operation were developed. Stage 0 represents full virtual learning, Stage 1 represents virtual and classroom learning, Stage 2 represents modified classroom learning where
restrictions remain in place for large gatherings, while Stage 3 represents full classroom learning where local officials have dismissed all school related restrictions. Drawing on the guidelines and safety protocols established by local, state, and federal public health officials and agencies, along with surveying all stakeholder groups within the Bishop McNamara family, the decision was made to operate in Stage 0 at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. Bishop McNamara High School has operated in this stage since.
Remaining Committed to Excellence Virtually Remaining committed to excellence virtually required the reimagining of the concept of school for all members of the Bishop McNamara family. Although the school was well positioned to meet this challenge because it has engaged in various forms of remote instruction since the 2006-2007 school year, and then operated in this way successfully during the latter part of the 2019-2020 school year, starting the new semester virtually, and then maintaining this posture for the foreseeable future, presented a number of challenging questions. “How does the school virtually orient the Class of 2024? How do teachers and students meet their new classes virtually? What is an optimal virtual schedule for instructors and students? How does the school meet the social, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of its students virtually? How do extracurricular clubs, fine arts groups, and athletic teams meet and move forward virtually?” These questions, and more, drove discussions during the summer months. Paramount to the school’s decision making was to ensure that Bishop McNamara remained committed to maintaining excellence in a virtual environment. Today, it is clear from a variety of indicators, that Bishop McNamara High School has not only met this challenge, but the school stands as a national leader in virtual education. The school’s frameworks and policies in this area guide and inform many Catholic and independent schools throughout the region and beyond. The school is proud to claim that our Mustangs have kept learning, growing, and achieving virtually. They remain resilient, eager, and engaged learners. They are a source of inspiration today and moving into the future. Our employees remain committed to their shared vocation as Holy Cross educators. They continue to explore and shape ideas and offer personal and differentiated instruction with zeal and care offered now on the most uptodate virtual continued on next page

platforms. Bishop McNamara continues to prepare students, as Fr. Moreau had hoped, “for better times than these.” If present today, the school hopes that Fr. Moreau would think that Bishop McNamara High School has met and exceeded his call.
Educating Hearts & Minds Virtually: Remaining Rooted in a Student-Centered Approach Bishop McNamara High School employs a student centered approach regarding its virtual learning and does so across every academic discipline including Science, Math, English, Social Studies, Information Technology and Engineering, Theology, Modern & Classical Languages, Fine Arts, and Health and Physical Education. Led by Assistant Principal for Academics Charles Shryock and the school’s dedicated academic team, Bishop McNamara instructors, students, and families have access to the school’s Virtual Learning Guide. This guide provides information about Maccess, which serves as the school’s “home base” for posting all lessons, assignments, and more. Students, families, administrators, counselors, and student support teams use this one location to check for assignments, course syllabi, instructional videos, enrichment activities, and collaborative documents across all classes, to ensure students are making progress. The Virtual Learning Guide goes well beyond providing important information and direction regarding these essential administrative functions and tasks. contact by the school’s administration and staff as administrators such as Reginald Brady, Laura Keller, and Herman Gloster ’96 continuously outreach to Bishop McNamara families to learn about how each student and their family are responding and dealing with this unique and challenging historical moment. Bishop McNamara’s counselors that include Alicia Oglesby, Shamelle Yemofio, Herman Frazier, Michael Jones, and Tia Bell meet virtually with their students according to grade level to discuss their academic performance, but also speak with them about how they are emotionally dealing and coping with the pandemic and other important topics. In addition, students and families access and share learning plans and strategies with the school’s student support instructors and program specialists Abigail Greer, Tierra Jolly ’00, Dee Butler LR ’80, Kevin Clark ’09, Anthony Sosnoskie and Alicia Brown to meet curricular goals. Also, students engage in an array of spiritual resources and meditation activities offered by the school’s Campus Ministry Team Amanda Saunders, Sam Hardwick, and Sandy Herndon. virtual practices, rehearsals, and discussion forums to enable these formative activities to advance while in Stage 0. For clubs and activities, Brian Brower, Director of Student Activities and Student Council and Mock Trial Moderator, has enabled club moderators, including himself, and students to meet virtually while in Stage 0. Whether it is groups that he leads such as the Student Council or Mock Trial Team, or other groups and their moderators, such as Abigail Greer’s Women’s Empowerment Club, Jan Steeger’s Science & Explorers Club, or outside groups such as Booz Allen Hamilton’s High School Speaker Series, these clubs continue to work virtually. The virtual workspace has not stopped these important clubs and organizations from meeting and discussing topics important to Bishop McNamara students. Regarding instruction in the fine arts, teachers have not only held classes virtually, but they have given one on one individual virtual instruction to students regarding their form of art. As Director of Fine Arts and Bands Mr. Anthony Conto notes, “Our students in the fine arts continue to receive instruction at the highest levels virtually. The ability to hold one on one tutorials with students is beneficial to them and their development as artists. Although we miss coming together in groups to rehearse to do live performances, I’m confident that the instruction that they’ve received in Stage 0 has advanced their skills as vocalists, instrumentalists, dancers, visual artists, and performers.” The Bishop McNamara Athletics Department has worked diligently to enable coaches to hold socially distanced workouts and practices throughout the fall in preparation for their upcoming seasons, which have been rescheduled to begin in January, 2021. Members of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) agreed to postpone athletic contests and games until January. The first WCAC season to be held this school year will be winter sports such as girls and boys basketball and wrestling. Winter sports teams will compete for two months only among other WCAC schools. Teams that typically compete in the fall are scheduled to have practices and games during the months of March and April. Then, in May and June, teams that typically compete in the spring season such as baseball and softball will hold these competitions during this time. Director of Athletics Marty Keithline and his staff, including Assistant Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Keita Malloy ’89, Assistant Athletic Director Dr. Jessica Nash and Athletic Trainer Stephanie Tong have worked with the Administrative Team, coaches, parents, and student-athletes to insure that during the school’s operation in Stage 0 that individual and team workouts have remained socially
vw distanced and that all safety protocols put in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 have been maintained. As Mr. Keithline says, “The entire Athletics Department has done an excellent job to meet this moment. This includes my assistants, coaches, administrators, parents, and student-athletes. Their cooperation and commitment to keeping the community safe has been incredible and I’m so proud of Bishop McNamara Athletics.”
What Does a Virtual School Day Look Like at BMHS? winner Lou Holder and his team of students do the “Friday Flow” edition of the morning announcements. This group of Mustangs do a pre-recorded edition of the morning announcements that relays newsworthy events and interesting topics relevant to the Bishop McNamara community. It’s a great way to start the day! Teachers begin live instruction starting at 8:15am. A student has four virtual classes each day that meet for forty-five minutes per class on the familiar Maroon and Gold rotating schedule. A school day in Stage 0 ends at noon and is followed on Maroon days with a twenty minute event called Mustang Mix, which provides students with another support group of approximately twenty students gathered by faculty and staff moderators to discuss social emotional challenges or simply to be with each other virtually to reduce the feeling of isolation caused by the pandemic.
opportunities for students to get together virtually, such as class movie nights and Mustang Mix, there is no doubt that, as Joseph Dorsey ’23 says following his earlier comments, “The greatest challenge is not being around other people.” This sentiment was echoed by many other Bishop McNamara students as well as the entire community. There is nothing like being personally together with your Bishop McNamara family. Indeed, this is particularly true for Bishop McNamara’s newest family member - President/CEO Dr. John Barnhardt. With his official appointment as the school’s fourth President/CEO in June, he has led and guided the Bishop McNamara community through this difficult time with patience, transparency and a welcoming spirit. Since June, he has been meeting various audiences virtually, including students and parents, and limited audiences personally such as faculty, staff, and advocates of the school’s Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign as the school continues to move forward with plans to build the La Reine Science & Innovation Center. Dr. Barnhardt has still yet to lead an in person all school assembly or visit in person an engaging classroom full of bright and
Instruction in Stage 0 takes place synchronously to attain optimal learning outcomes. Synchronous instruction allows for an instructor to meet with students in real time so that they can give lectures, show and demonstrate skills, and field live questions. The platform that the school currently employs to do live instruction is Google Meets. Assignments are due, at the earliest, by 11:59 pm of the next school day. Bishop McNamara instructors are advised to make direct instruction short and rich to ensure participation and completion. This class schedule includes a robust extracurricular program that starts at 12:45pm and lasts until 1:30pm. Students have the freedom to study and connect with teachers, while faculty continue to support at-home responsibilities through virtual work, between 12:30-3:30pm. When asked about what has worked well regarding virtual teaching and learning in Stage 0, Joseph Dorsey ’23 said, “The time for classes and the breaks we get in between classes has worked well so far regarding virtual learning and teaching.” Another sophomore student Alexandra Monell ’23 noted, “The amount of time that classes are has worked much better this year compared to last year.” This was a familiar refrain among other students and a wise prudential judgment by the school. Stage 0’s independent schedule recognizes that learning and teaching in a virtual environment are very different than in person learning and teaching. Although the school has worked hard to create

engaging Mustangs. Even his Installation Mass with the recently named Cardinal elect Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory in October had to be held virtually. Yet, he has met this leadership moment to make the safety and well-being of the entire community paramount regarding his decisions about the school’s proper stage of operation. The Bishop McNamara community looks forward to the day when we can gather together as one family to thank him personally, along with the rest of the administration, faculty, and staff for their incredible work during this unprecedented time. Inspired by its vision to form empowered leaders, inspired by the Gospel, who transform the world, the physical closure of the school’s campus and operation in Stage 0 has not prevented Bishop McNamara from advancing its vision or fulfilling its mission. The Bishop McNamara community continues to make God known, loved, and served. The school remains for its students, families, employees, and alumni a community committed to excellence. The Bishop McNamara community continues to innovate, transform, and thrive, thus serving as a source of inspiration for those within our community and beyond. As the school community says each day, “We are Bishop McNamara. We are Holy Cross. We choose, through our words and actions, to build family, show respect, educate our minds and hearts, and bring hope. We choose to think with Christ.” n

HALL OF FAME virtual INDUCTION CEREMONY The 2020 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony welcomed
three new individual inductees and one championship team into the Bishop McNamara Hall of Fame, which honors the achievements of individuals and teams in athletics from La Reine and Bishop McNamara High Schools. The Induction Ceremony was held for the first time virtually on Thursday, November 5. The evening brought together alumni, current families, board members, administration, coaches, and employees to celebrate those who have excelled in athletics on and off the field. The induction class of 2020 included three individuals from Bishop McNamara - Keith Lytle ’75, Tiffany Evans ’93, and Stacey Oldenburg-Buckhaults ’00 and one team - the 2003 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team from Bishop McNamara High School. Keith Lytle ’75 was a member of the Varsity Football Team all four years of high school. He was a key member on the 1973 DC City Championship Team that went 11-0 that season. For his many accomplishments on the gridiron, Keith was named All-City by the Washington Post and Washington Star, All-State by the Baltimore Sun, and, of highest distinction, an All-American by the Sentinel News. In addition to playing football, Ketih played basketball and was a significant contributor on the Varsity Track & Field Team where he set a school record for shot put that lasted ten years until 1985. Upon graduation, Keith received scholarship offers to play football in college. He attended

Stacey Oldenburg-Buckhaults ’00 was a multi-sport athlete at Bishop McNamara competing as a swimmer, basketball player, and soccer player. However, it was on the soccer field where Stacey was a true standout as a member of the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team all four years of high school. Stacey played center midfielder, defender, and forward. During her senior season while serving as the team’s captain, Stacey was invited to play for the Olympic Development Team, which serves as the development squad for the United States Women’s National Team, which eventually won the gold medal. Stacey’s individual athletic accomplishments on the soccer field were many as she was named Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Second Team All Conference her freshman year in 1996 and then was named WCAC First Team All Conference in 1997, 1998, and 1999. She was named First Team All County in 1998 and 1999. In 1999, Stacey was a National Nominee for the Wendy’s High School Heisman and was selected that year as a First Team selection for the Maryland Independent Schools Soccer Tournament. Stacey was honored at graduation with the Frank Neitzey Award as the outstanding female student-athlete for the Class of 2000. Upon graduation, Stacey went on to have a distinguished collegiate career as a midfielder and forward at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She then played for a semi-pro
The 2003 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team, led by Head Coach Mike Bozeman ’84, remains one of Bishop McNamara High School’s most accomplished teams in its five decade history. Posting a 32-5 overall season record, the team was ranked in the top twenty of best high schools nationally by USA Today and they were ranked number one in the Washington Metropolitan area by the Washington Post at the season’s conclusion. They were Bishop Walsh Invitational Champions, WCAC Champions, and DC City Title Champions. The team achieved both collectively and individually, as numerous members of the 2003 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team received postseason accolades and awards. Upon graduation from Bishop McNamara, several team members went on to play basketball in college. The roster from this outstanding team included Kalika France ’03, Genet Moore ’03, Antelia Parrish ’04, Nikki Bozeman ’04, Chauntise Wright ’04, Iman McFarland ’05, Alexandra Roane ’05, Ashley Spriggs ’06, Paulisha Kellum ’06, Jori Nwachukwu ’06, Manager Morgan Mercer ’04, Assistant Coach Robert Surrat, and Head Coach Mike Bozeman ’84. Robert Summers ’86 served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Mr. Summers is Board Chairperson and a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee. Bishop McNamara High School Announces Major Investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation
On Monday, September 28, 2020, President/CEO Dr. John
Barnhardt announced that Bishop McNamara High School received a major investment in The Faith. Family. Future! Capital Campaign from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation – the family foundation of late construction pioneer Jim Clark. The investment of $1,000,000 from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation helps to establish the La Reine Science & Innovation Center, scheduled to open in 2021. With the vision to ‘Innovate. Transform. Thrive,’ The La Reine Science & Innovation Center will be a hub for technology, collaboration and discovery by offering new academic programs in science, technology, cybersecurity, engineering, entrepreneurship, and multimedia. By providing students with next generation, handson learning experiences, Bishop McNamara High School hopes to develop the innovators of tomorrow. Bishop McNamara High School thanks the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation for this transformative investment as it enables the school to continue to advance the building of the La Reine Science & Innovation Center. The A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation has generously supported Washington-area organizations, hospitals, schools, cultural institutions and veterans groups for over 30 years through the Clark Charitable Foundation. The team at the Clark Foundation is humbled and excited to help realize Mr. Clark’s philanthropic legacy in the next decade and beyond. This major investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation to help build the La Reine Science and Innovation Center furthers Mr. Clark’s outstanding philanthropic legacy as this Center will be a catalyst for positive change for generations of Bishop McNamara students and residents of Prince George’s County. As Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks says, “The La Reine Science & Innovation Center will be a game changer, not only for Bishop McNamara students, but for the Prince George’s County community as a whole. We know that STEM education is critical to ensuring our young people can compete professionally after high school.” Under the creative direction of Grimm + Parker, an architecture firm and leader in sustainable design in partnership with Scheibel Construction, an award-winning general contractor, the La Reine Science & Innovation Center will be a 20,000-square-foot building that will provide deep, hands-on learning experiences for the student community to explore, create, discover, collaborate and innovate.

The La Reine Science & Innovation Center will offer seven classrooms, five of them as customary science labs, featuring two chemistry, two physics and a health science lab. The stateof-the-art innovation lab will be the centerpiece of the building, complete with industry leading hardware such as 3D printers, vinyl cutters, drill presses and computer components that can make a machine run and affect its performance. During the school day, Bishop McNamara High School will occupy the La Reine Science & Innovation Center for preparing students for success in higher education and the workforce of the future. After school hours, the Center will function as a hub for adult learners in Career Technology Education (CTE) earning certificate programs in cybersecurity, CCNA, and other certifications in various fields. As a proud partner with the citizens of Prince George’s County, the new Center will develop tomorrow’s innovators. As a school serving a majority African American student population, the La Reine Science & Innovation Center allows Bishop McNamara students, underserved in STEM related fields, to gain the skills and certifications necessary to advance toward higher education or job placement in these highly sought after professional and technical fields. Board Chair Robert Summers ’86 shared, “We are elated to receive such a generous gift from the Clark Foundation in support of the La Reine Science & Innovation Center. We believe this gift aligns with the Clark Foundation’s mission in supporting organizations that have a strong infrastructure and programmatic vision. Bishop McNamara envisions that the La Reine Science & Innovation Center will provide faculty, students, and the surrounding community a space where creativity and potential can thrive and inspire the development of our future leaders.” President Barnhardt had this to say about this considerable contribution from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation, “I am filled with gratitude today for this major investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation. Their investment in the La Reine Science & Innovation Center will change the lives of countless numbers of our students and neighbors in Prince George’s County. They now will have a next generation facility where they can go to acquire the skills and proficiencies necessary to compete for places in higher education or career advancement. This investment marks a significant move forward in our fundraising efforts for this facility and I could not be more grateful for this bountiful gift.” n

AN Interviews with BMHS Alumnae Devin Swiner ’12 and Meghan Wyvill ’12 Alumni NEWS
As Bishop McNamara High School prepares to build the La Reine Science & Innovation Center, the school remains committed to having this next generation facility serve as a catalyst for positive social change. The school seeks to give every student the resources for future success. Moreover, Bishop McNamara High School hopes this building project advances opportunities for African American and female students as both demographic groups remain underrepresented in fields and careers related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The opportunities that this new physical space will afford to them to become future health care professionals, engineers, scientists, mathematicians, entrepreneurs, and culture changing thought leaders will be numerous and transformational not only for Bishop McNamara High School, but for the neighboring Prince George’s County community and the surrounding Washington Metropolitan area. Bishop McNamara High School is well positioned to accomplish this goal as the school already draws on a history of success producing these kinds of students including recent alumnae Devin Swiner ’12, who this year won The Ohio State University’s Next Generation Innovator of the Year award and Meghan Wyvill ’12, who works as a nurse in The University of Maryland’s Medical Intensive Care Unit currently confronting the COVID-19 pandemic. The editorial staff of the Mustang Messenger recently caught up with Devin and Meghan. We asked them about their time at Bishop McNamara, the significance of their work, particularly as women and, in Devin’s case, as an African American woman, and how the La Reine Science & Innovation Center will impact the future of the school. Here are Ms Swiner’s and Ms. Wyvill’s responses to our questions.
Interview with Devin Swiner ’12 Describe your fondest memories of Bishop McNamara High School. One of the things that comes to mind when I think about my time at McNamara is the fact that I was able to be involved in activities that fit all of my interests. It was great being able to play sports, be on student council, be a Peer Minister, join honor societies, do service projects because they allowed me to grow not only as a student, but as a person. The people I met at Bishop McNamara are still people that I talk to today

Describe your educational and career path since your graduation from Bishop McNamara High School. After I graduated from McNamara in 2012, I attended the University of Pittsburgh. I graduated in 2016 with my B.S. in Chemistry and minors in Sociology and Africana Studies. I currently attend The Ohio State University, pursuing my Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. I graduate in May, 2021.
Discuss how your education since graduation from Bishop McNamara High School helped you achieve personally and professionally. McNamara taught me to be myself, unapologetically. I was challenged academically and personally and the lessons I learned there are the ones that I keep with me to this day. It was the best foundation for me to reach my current goals. From learning that it was okay to have multiple interests at once to learning how to study and write, the education I received at McNamara has helped me tremendously throughout my journey.
Discuss how winning The Ohio State University’s Next Generation Innovator of the Year award can serve as a source of inspiration for future generations of Mustangs to pursue careers in STEM related fields.
interested in STEM and give them the tools to succeed in these fields. It’s important to show students in these populations that they are capable and can be the next generation of STEM superstars.
Discuss why you co-founded the #BlackinChem hashtag to draw attention to and increase support for women of color in STEM fields. #BlackinChem came out of the need to show the world that Black chemists exist and that we can contribute more to chemistry than just diversity and inclusion initiatives. We are scientists and a lot of times that gets put on the backburner. I wanted to create a platform that allowed Black chemists to talk science and also to meet one another. and the support I’ve gotten from my Mustang community has truly been unmatched. But if I have to pick just one memory, leading Kairos as a Peer Minister has to be it. Those weekends getting to know the juniors, faculty, and staff on a spiritual level are memories I hold dear to my heart. Being able to connect with other Peer Ministers for those weekends was special as well.
The La Reine Science & Innovation Center will enable Bishop McNamara High School to serve as an important resource and pipeline for underrepresented populations in STEM fields; including women, minorities and students at or below the poverty line through a new program of scholarship and financial aid support.

I’m a naturally curious and creative person and that’s what my research projects in graduate school reflect. I always want to help others so using my science to do that was a natural decision. Winning this award shows that no answer to a question is out of reach as long as you try. If you have an idea that you’re passionate about, no matter how “crazy” it may sound to others, pursue it. Be confident in yourself and your abilities and that will take you far in your career and your life.
Describe why the building of the La Reine Science & Innovation Center is important here at Bishop McNamara High School. The La Reine Science & Innovation Center will be able to give to underrepresented populations access to STEM in tangible ways, something that historically hasn’t happened. I love the fact that McNamara is using its resources to get students

inclusive and diverse spaces was an added bonus. I am just humbled at how quickly #BlackinChem gained traction and how global (from the UK to Africa to Australia) the movement has been.
Describe your plans for the future once you finish your doctorate. After I graduate, I want to continue to do science that helps people. I’m currently looking at jobs with pharmaceutical companies that do health-related research (medicine, vaccines, etc.). Short term, I definitely still want to be in the lab. Longer term, I want to continue my work with #MacScientist and #BlackinChem and work in science communication.
What advice would you give to our current students? To the current Mustangs, be proud of who you are and show off ! Self-advocacy is extremely important in the next phases of your life so start practicing that now. Also realize that no path is linear and that is completely okay! Learn to be okay with the occasional pivot but also enjoy the journey. n
Interview with Meghan Wyvill ’12 Describe your fondest memories of Bishop McNamara High School? I have such amazing memories from McNamara. Some of my best friends today are friends I made at school. I’m even friends with some of my teachers and coaches. So, I’d say my fondest memories were making amazing relationships with people I didn’t know who would be forever so important. That and Pi Day.
Describe your educational and career path since your graduation from Bishop McNamara High School. I went to Anne Arundel Community College after graduating from Bishop McNamara. I intended on being a math major to become a math teacher. I ended up changing my mind and switched to nursing. Then I transferred to the School of Nursing at The University of Maryland at Baltimore, where I graduated in 2017. I have been working as a nurse in the University of Maryland’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (M.I.C.U.) ever since.

Discuss how working as a nurse in the midst of a global pandemic has influenced your view of healthcare and its practice in the United States. I always thought the healthcare system needed reform. And working as a nurse with the patient population that I do presents a very vivid example of why universal access to quality healthcare is a must. But working through the pandemic has made it crystal clear that the system operates on reaction as opposed to prevention. So I’m hopeful that there will be teams and systems put into place to help prepare for the next pandemic so not as many lives are lost when something else inevitably happens.
Describe, in your own words, why the building of the La Reine Science & Innovation Center is important here at Bishop McNamara High School. Women, specifically women of color, are so vastly underrepresented in STEM fields, which can be such a deterrent if you don’t see someone who looks like you, doing what you want to do.
