Dear McNamara Team & Family, What a year we had at Bishop McNamara! On Friday, May 27th we returned as a family to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to graduate the Class of 2022. It was a whirlwind of activity during those final weeks, and on graduation day, but there was also an immense amount to celebrate, some of which you will see in the pages of this Messenger. Successes from our Class of 2022 included over $22 million in merit-based scholarships and financial aid. Our newest alumni will be going to Harvard University, Brown University, Morehouse College, Berklee College of Music, MIT, the University of Maryland, and so many more. This class also completed over 18,000 hours of Christian service, and we are immensely proud. The success of this year is a direct testament to the strength, dedication, and love of our faculty and staff, for whom I remain grateful. Our school is strong, and moving forward with our world-class learning experience rooted in our Holy Cross tradition. I am confident that each and every student who comes through our doors will leave as an empowered leader, ready to change the world. Tremendous progress has been made on our new La Reine Science & Innovation Center, and we are very close to finalizing construction! Each time I go in, I see new facets coming together, from window and floor installations, to seeing the framework of how each room will teach, innovate, and transform the student experience, as well as serve Prince George’s County. Additionally, it gives us further opportunity to honor La Reine High School, and all of the incredible women who have graduated and benefited from that experience. As we continue ahead, I ask for your support as a champion of McNamara, whether that is attending the Grand Opening later this school year, donating to our Annual Fund, or whatever means the most to you within the McNamara experience.

In a blink, we as a community and family reached the end of the 2021-2022 school year. The year had its ups and downs as we continued to work through the COVID-19 pandemic, but our school and its students, families, faculty, and staff persevered and showed the determination and hope that are always at the heart of the Bishop McNamara experience. I want to personally commend and thank our faculty and staff for all of their work during this past school year, and as we prepare for 2022-2023. Each time I visit campus, I see the ongoing progress of our new La Reine Science & Innovation Center. What started as a blank slate is now a beautiful, near-finished building, ready to welcome new opportunities. This 20,000 square foot space will serve countless Mustangs and members of the Prince George’s County community with cutting-edge technology and high-quality curriculum, and it has been a long time in the making. Soon enough, it will be time to open the doors and celebrate. I am calling on all members of the La Reine High School and Bishop McNamara alumni community to come back and visit. We will be holding our Grand Opening Celebration in the coming months, and our hope and goal is to connect with you. Please consider coming to see our newest addition, and the future of Bishop McNamara, and encourage your classmates, family, and friends to join. We want to see you and hear your updates, your successes, and your hopes for the school that we all treasure. On January 20th, we had the honor of inducting 52 outstanding students into the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States. Selection is based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. This year we inducted 49 members from the class of 2023 and 19 new members from the class of 2022 to add to the 58 members from the class of 2022 who were inducted last school year. n

The Bishop McNamara Fine Arts Program was thrilled to welcome the following artists as part of our FADE Colloqium series: In January, FADE Colloquium invited guest speaker, Jaylyn Faith Malonte Neal ‘11. Jaylyn is an actor, dancer, and influencer, and has several acting credits including Los Angeles Kidnapping (2017), Double Cross (2020), A Rich Christmas (2021) and TMI Hollywood (2012). In March, FADE Colloquium featured Disney dancer JaLeesa Short. JaLeesa most recently became a Guest Experience Manager at Hollywood Studios where she manages performers from the Entertainment Base. JaLeesa is honored to represent the cast members of the Walt Disney World Resort during “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” and carry on the legacy and heritage of the Walt Disney Company. Also in March, FADE Colloquium featured Cheryl Foster. She is a multimedia, visual artist whose large-scale public art can be seen in exterior and interior environments across the country. Her materials range from sparkling, stained glass to soft oil paintings and the subject matter always involves everyday people doing everyday things.

National Honors Society Induction
Catholic Schools Week. Bishop McNamara celebrated Catholic Schools Week from January 30, 2022 - February 5, 2022. This year we celebrated our community's faith, excellence, and service with a series of events honoring our students, parents, staff, President, and our Board of Directors. Without our amazing community, we wouldn’t be McNamara! n

On Thursday, February 24th we celebrated Black History Month by livestreaming our annual assembly. This year’s showcase featured dance, African drums, spoken word, short acts, and powerful history lessons. We were thrilled to learn that other schools in the area tuned in to watch the assembly and celebrate with us!
Accepted Students Day. On February 26th, we welcomed and celebrated our Class of 2026 Mustangs during our Accepted Students Day. Future Mustangs and their families enjoyed a program with welcome remarks from Mrs. Carter and Dr. Barnhardt, student speakers, musical and dance performances, as well as group tours around campus. n
Liturgical Celebrations. Throughout the year, we continued to come together as a community for Mass, honoring important milestones on both the liturgical and school calendars.
Honors Awards Ceremonies. In May, we held Honors Awards Ceremonies for the classes of 2023, 2024, and 2025. Each ceremony featured Dean’s List, Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude presentations, as well as outstanding achievement awards and St. Andre Awards for each class. During the Honors Awards Ceremonies, 18 students received merit-based scholarships generously made possible by members of the Bishop McNamara community. n

In the fall of 2021, Bishop McNamara launched our new NASA Connectors program to connect our BMHS students with NASA researchers. A diverse group of students expressed interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects: Caitlyn Barber '23, Andre Watson '22, Justin Malloy '22, Andy Mina '22, Camryn Bennett '22, Amora Altmon '23, and Bianca Francia '23 Each student was selected to participate in our shadowing mentorship program, which focuses on establishing a professional connection between the underrepresented high school student and the NASA researcher. Dr. Danna Qasim, a postdoctoral researcher in the Astrochemistry Laboratory at NASA GSFC, and her former mentor Dr. Stefanie Milam, Research Ast, Solar Systems Analysis, co-founded this program, which was modeled after Dr. Milam and Dr. Qasim's unique story. The two were paired in a mentorship program when Dr. Qasim was a high school student, and Dr. Milam was a graduate student scientific researcher. After establishing a professional connection in the program, both scientists remained in contact for over a decade, with Dr. Milam acting as a resource for Dr. Qasim's career endeavors. Today, Dr. Qasim is a postdoctoral researcher in the Astrochemistry Laboratory at NASA GSFC and attributes her dream career path due to her continued contact with Dr. Milam.
“I'm so passionate about this program because, during my journey, I felt alone as there weren't other people of color. I wanted to help fix that for future generations. I realized that there are always obstacles so there has to be someone from the group ahead willing to reach back and pull them forward.”

Bishop McNamara hopes to assist this gap by creating a bridge between our Mustangs and the STEM career fields through this NASA Mentorship program. And this year, our Mustangs greatly enjoyed the opportunities through NASA Connectors.

“I'm the daughter of two immigrants - my mom is from Korea, and my father is from Palestine,“ Dr. Qasim explained. “I had never had that uplifting teacher story. I had a language-related learning disorder, and was different from my peers. My school was predominantly white, and my parents were immigrants, so things were really hard for me. When I met Stephanie in high school, things began to change for me. Her mentorship helped me achieve my goals.”
Amora Altmon ’23 aspires to be a doctor and joined the mentorship program for guidance on achieving her career goal. Amora shares: “I signed up for the NASA program to gain new insight into different STEM professions. I have also gained support, advice, and help from my mentor. I have now applied for NASA internships, and will take up a research project during the summer. I had the opportunity to visit my mentor, Dr. Melissa Trainer, Deputy Principal Investigator at NASA. While there, I was introduced to a model of a mass spectrometer, which measures molecules according to mass, that was going through testing. I also shadowed Dr. Danna Qasim who is a postdoctoral researcher in the Cosmic Ice Laboratory and Dr. Kendra Farnsworth who was conducting research on the prebiotic chemistry in Titan's impact craters.”

Caitlyn’s mother, Mrs. Leslie DeFour-Barber, added, “This program has given my daughter a greater vision of what she can do with her STEM career. She loves building robots, and has competed in the Metro Warriors STEM Organization in the past. Thanks to Dr. Chou and the BMHS NASA Mentorship Program, I'm grateful that BMHS showed my daughter that she, too, can get paid for doing what she loves one day.”
“I saw different machines that break down meteors, Martian rocks, and minerals in ice from space. There was a chamber that mimics the atmosphere of Mars, and another chamber that was full of radiation and working equipment from the 1970’s. It was exciting to know that I could one day have a career where I get to explore and experiment all day.”
Caitlyn Barber ‘23 had the honor of spending the day at NASA with her mentor, Dr. Louth Chou, Astrobiologist and Organic Geochemist, NPP. Caitlyn shared, “My goal is to study Mechanical Engineering or Architecture in college. I applied for the mentorship program to build a relationship with someone who has the same mindset as me. I know I enjoy learning about science, doing experiments, and being a hands-on learner, but I wasn't sure how that translates into a career path I'll want. I'm grateful for my mentor, Dr. Chou! I talk to her often, sharing so many common interests. She's shown me that I have many STEM-related career options no matter what area of STEM I decide to study in college.”
We are thrilled that the student feedback has been so positive, and we are excited about expanding the program during the 2022-2023 school year to provide more opportunities. Because the shadowing experience is such an impactful part of the experience, we expect to have more mentors next year, so that more students can visit the campus of NASA Goddard and other local planetary science laboratories.

Easter/ Spring break. 14 soccer players and 16 adults including their coach, Dave Mongey, and several BMHS soccer parents flew to Italy over Easter Break to visit the sites, play soccer with some of the local girls’ teams, and enjoy all that Italy has to offer. The nine-day trip was organized by a youth travel company with stops in Milan, Florence, and Rome, including a visit to the Vatican where they received a Papal Blessing.Duringthe trip, the Lady Mustangs played a game against a local girls soccer team in each of the three cities they visited. The girls came away with two wins and one loss, and a great experience all around! TO

'22 was a Pigskin Club Award Recipient at this year’s Pigskin Club of Washington, Inc. All Sports Awards Ceremony. The Mustangs will compete at the Adidas Outdoor Track and Field Nationals 2022, where the Mustangs have qualified 15 athletes, including five relays. Our team was elated to kick off the month by sharing Mental Health Moments during the morning announcements. We strive to continue to improve the mental health of the McNamara school community. As an extension of our office, Mrs. Cherese Carter, 9th Grade Counselor, led a weekly stress management group and Mrs. Shamelle Yemofio, Director of Counseling, led a grief counseling group.The counseling team also coordinated with 11th grade student and 2022-2023 Executive President Nyla Davis ‘23 to provide mental health awareness swag to students who completed a wellness survey.

On May 10, 2022, we hosted our annual College Signing Day event to highlight the achievements of our senior class. This was the first year since 2019 where we were able to meet in the main gym to celebrate our seniors. The senior class did a tremendous job through the college application process. We are ecstatic to share that they completed over 1,500 applications to more than 330 colleges across 44 states and two countries. In addition, they have earned over $22 million dollars in scholarships and grants. We are looking forward to the class of 2023 meeting and exceeding those statistics!

By Mr. Terry Burroughs, Assistant Director of Counseling DURING THE START OF THE SPRING SEMESTER, the counseling department was busy with finalizing college applications, facilitating Pets On Wheels for stress relief, coordinating five cohorts of SAT Prep sessions for the junior class, and hosting opportunities for our juniors to meet college representatives. Over ten schools visited the counseling department in the spring, including WinstonSalem State University, Fayetteville State University, Virginia State University, Rutgers University, United States Naval Academy, and InStevenson.March, the counseling team met with all 9th - 11thgrade classes to explain the course registration process for the upcoming school year. As an extension of the counseling center, the team met with each student individually to ensure they met graduation requirements. This also served as an opportunity to talk to the students about their future plans and interests. On April 26, 2022, the counseling department continued to help students develop the next step in the college attainment journey by hosting the annual Jesuit Excellence College Fair in the Fine Arts Gym. This enriching event was open to our sophomore and junior classes, and offered them the opportunity to learn about and interact with over 20 colleges and universities.
This summer Shamelle Yemofio, Director of Counseling, and I will host our annual multi-cohort college application workshop series. We will be holding three-day workshops to prepare the juniors for the college application process. G. Scott Drew, DO ‘79 was recently named as one of America’s best medical dermatologists by Newsweek. He was one of only 10 Ohio dermatologists on the list. Scott and a team of volunteers traveled to Freetown, Sierra Leone in May through a partnership with the national Ministry of Health and National Health Corps. Scott served on the dermatology team tending to adults and kids with dermatologic diseases, infections, and malignancies. The goal is to open a permanent dermatology service with in-country staff and an ongoing international partnership, to allow continuity of care for patients and a bilateral opportunity for teaching and learning. nJay Haigler ‘78 was featured in the March edition of National Geographic Magazine, titled “Into the Depths”. The issue featured Jay and his organization Diving With a Purpose. Diving with a Purpose (DWP) is a 501c3 organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of submerged heritage resources by providing education, training, certification and field experience to adults and youth in the fields of maritime archaeology and ocean conservation. Their special focus is the protection, documentation and interpretation of African slave trade shipwrecks and the maritime history and culture of African-Americans who formed a core of labor and expertise for America’s maritime enterprises. n

This year’s TEDxRushU theme was: “Minor Setback, Major Comeback”. Speakers taught guests about “how our obstacles inspire resilience to build a better tomorrow”. n Tiffany Norwood LR ‘85 was named Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year 2022! The Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year award is given annually by Entrepreneurship at Cornell to a Cornellian who exemplifies entrepreneurial achievement, impact on humanity, community inspiration and high ethical standards. Tiffany is the first African American woman to win this award. She was honored on Cornell University’s campus in April at the Entrepreneurship at Cornell Celebration event. Tiffany’s company, Tribetan, uses technology, music, video, and animations to teach entrepreneurship, innovation and practical creativity. She is also co-founder of SimWin Sports, the first-ever digital sports league platform, with tokens, online betting, and e-sports fantasy tournaments. SimWin launched at the 2022 Super Bowl. n

Members of the Class of 1974 came together to celebrate and honor Terry O’Connor ‘74, and fundraise for the new scholarship established at Bishop McNamara in his memory. Carl Desmarais ‘74 and Andrew Turner ‘74 had a wonderful time with their families. To date, the Terry O’Connor Memorial Endowed Scholarship has raised over $50,000. We continue to collect donations for this scholarship through the BMHS website. n
Jasmin Grimes ‘13, Assistant Athletic Trainer at Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium, was recently featured by the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS), speaking about an important moment in black history for her as part of the PFATS Black History Month celebration. n Shelby Lee ‘17 was recently published in the Howard University Undergraduate Research Journal, “Ukweli”. Her article, “Genetic Diversity in the Mottled Sculpin, Cottus Bairdii, A North American Freshwater Fish”, co-authored with her professor Stacy Farina, was included in the Fall/Winter 2021-2022 issue. n

Cydney Hurston Dupree ‘07, Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Yale University School of Management, was awarded the American Psychological Society’s Rising Star Award and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s SAGE Early Career Trajectory Award. n After 400 entries and 55,000 votes, Matt Nunez ‘12 was chosen as the winning design for the front of the Colorado drivers license. Matt’s photo is now featured on the front of the license. His winning photo features Mount Sneffels, located west of Ouray and north of Telluride, Colorado. The contest saw a total of 280 front-side submissions and 127 back-side designs from 119 artists. n Darrell Holloman II ‘00 recently joined the Bishop McNamara Advancement Team as our new Annual Fund and Online Giving Manager! Prior to this new role, Darrell served as a Social Studies teacher at McNamara for ten out of his 16 years of teaching. He is also Founder and CEO of The We Are All Educators Organization (The WAAE, Org), his own professional development and career mentorship nonprofit organization. n
