Dear Bishop McNamara Families and Friends, While walking down the hall a few weeks ago, I paused a moment to listen in on a conversation between a teacher and one of our ninth grade students. As all of us occasionally do, the student had a bad day and the teacher noticed that the young man was not his typical self. When the teacher inquired as to what was going on, the student shared that he was discouraged that he hadn’t performed better on a writing assignment in her class. What took place next is a typical occurrence at Bishop McNamara High School. Not only did the teacher offer encouragement and make suggestions on how to improve, but I heard the teacher share with the student great life-long advice on how to deal with setbacks. She pointed to having an “attitude of gratitude” as her secret to remaining optimistic and overcoming discouragement. She advised the young man to make a list of those things that he was grateful for, and assured him that before long his attitude would turn positive again, and he would be able to handle the challenges ahead. It is with that same spirit of gratitude that the 2013-2014 Annual Report comes to you today. As I reflect on this past school year my heart is full with the stories of triumph of students who overcame the challenges of life to go on to fulfill their greatest dreams; with admiration for teachers who are passionate about forming young people to have the competence and the courage to make a difference in the world; respect for parents who sacrifice so much to provide a high quality Catholic education for their child; and gratitude for each of you who believe in the mission of Bishop McNamara High School and the students we serve by devoting your time, sharing your talents, and investing financially in this noble cause. Whether you made a financial contribution, provided tutoring for a student, volunteered at an activity, attended a game, play, event, or spoke to a group of students, I hope you know that you have made a difference! When Jeff Kinney ‘89, international bestselling author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and movie series, spoke to our student body this past September, he encouraged our students to value their time at Bishop McNamara. “It’s a privilege to go here, which I realized much more after I graduated,” he said. “The teachers here had such an impact on my life.” I am sure that message is one that resonates with each of you, which is probably why you choose each year to remain connected and support Bishop McNamara. We want you to know that you, too, are having an impact on the lives of our students in your own unique way and for that we are grateful. It is with an attitude of gratitude that, on behalf of our faculty, staff, students, and parents, I send heartfelt thanks to you and your family. Thank you for believing in us! Dear Bishop McNamara Families and Friends, My name is Chris DeCesaris ‘91 and I have the honor of serving as Chair of the Bishop McNamara High School Board of Directors. I serve on the Board alongside a talented and giving group of individuals consisting of Mr. Paul Agustin ‘99, Mr. Daniel Curtin, Ms. Rosie Allen-Herring, Ms. Nicki Burns Athey LR ‘92, Mrs. Anne Gillis, Dr. Marilyn Goldsmith, Mr. Paul Jackson II ‘94, Mr. David Kacar, Fr. Kevin Kennedy, Mrs. Kathy Newman, Mr. James O’Brien ‘88, Mr. Garry Perkins ‘75, Bro. Michael Smith, CSC, and Mr. Ernest (“Marty”) Spain ‘95. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank each of them for donating their time, talents, and treasures to the worthy cause of this school. When I’m on campus for Board meetings, I sometimes take an indirect route to my ultimate destination so I can experience and fully appreciate the magnitude of how much has changed since my days here, along with those things that are exactly as I remember them. I always begin my walk in the main concourse. The floors still shine like they did in 1991 and the students still congregate throughout. I’m always surprised by the presence of female students! I was part of one of the last classes of Bishop McNamara before it merged with La Reine High School so seeing a functioning, coeducational school is a wonderful, albeit different, sight to see. I walk over to see what’s going on in the fine arts wing of the building. During my time at the school, this area served as the residence for the Holy Cross Brothers. It now serves as home to our student musicians, dancers, painters, and sculptors. I head back across the concourse and upstairs to peak into the math and science classrooms and computer labs. While most of the teachers have changed, the same lessons that shaped my future still echo in the hallways. From there, it’s back down the stairs to take one more pass through the festively decorated senior hallway. I see one of my old (or should I say “former”) teachers, Mr. Goyette, teaching students not just to write, but also to write creatively, analytically, and critically. I head past the library, remodeled since my days, and the counseling center, formerly a study hall and then a wrestling room, which helps so many students reach their fullest potential. If time permits, I take the short walk across the parking lot and into the Fine Arts and Athletic Center building. If memory serves me correctly, the land on which this building sits was most used as a practice field for the freshmen football team. While I’m not likely to ever end up in the Mustang Hall of Fame, I can certainly appreciate it for its value of honoring my former classmates. After taking my stroll down memory lane it’s time to get down to business. As I take my seat at the table to begin the Board meeting, my mind is at ease and I feel a great sense of pride - “Mustang Pride” at that. My walk will be a constant reminder of the incredible transformation the school has gone through over the years, which will inform and guide every comment and decision I make this evening. I give to Bishop McNamara because I want to do my part to help ensure the school has the resources it needs to provide students with the same - or better - experiences than I had as a student. I’m confident the school will put my contributions to good use in developing our future leaders. I don’t even have to ask where my money goes – I wander the campus and see it for myself. 2013-2014 Bishop McNamara High School received Middle States reaccreditation in February 2014 with the Middle States Association of Colleges and High Schools. Accreditation is an external, objective validation of school quality and student achievement that fosters continuous school improvement. The school chose a rigorous protocol, Excellence by Design (ExBD) as a self-study and accreditation protocol that used strategic planning as a vehicle for establishing objectives for growth and improvement. The United States Air Force Band visited Mr. Conto’s class to teach, perform for, and play with the Bishop McNamara students. The visit was part of a program to encourage students to seek professional careers in music. Bishop McNamara educators Michael Pozniak, Nicole Dado, and Victor Shin were awarded fellowships for travel, cultural experiences, and educational studies around the globe over the summer. The three’s travels included but were not limited to various parts of Asia and Europe.

Bishop McNamara teacher Adam Greer and his wife, Abbie, welcomed a new baby boy to their family. William André Greer was born healthy and is doing well. Abbie is the Principal at St. Matthias the Apostle. Bishop McNamara teacher Justin McClain ‘00 and his wife, Bernadette, welcomed Mary Christine McClain on Sunday, June 30, 2013. Big brother, John-Paul McClain, was thrilled with his new sister. Alfred Bannister ‘14 set the Maryland State record for High School wrestling wins with 272 total wins. Alfred is the winningest wrestler in Bishop McNamara High School history, eclipsing his older brother, Andrew Bannister ‘09. Alfred committed to the University of Maryland, where he currently wrestles. After many months of preparation and anticipation, Laura Irwin ‘15 and Carlos Souffrain ‘17 traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC). The leadership conference sought to help identify

Cedric Young ‘15 became the first Student Intern in the history of Bishop McNamara High School! Cedric, a talented graphic designer, began working for Director of Communications Robert Feasley and created multiple pieces of work for the Mustang Messenger and Annual Report publications.

Mr. Geoffrey Molchan along with Señora Georgina GomezBozzo, Mr. Reginald Brady, Mrs. Mindi Imes de Duclos ‘96 and 20 students from BMHS ventured to Italy over the 2014 Easter Break. The trip was to not only expose students to foreign cultures and history, but to hopefully inspire them to spend time abroad during their latter high school years, as well as into their college years for further study and future travel. Bishop McNamara High School was invited to participate in The National Society of Arts and Letters Excellence in the Arts program. The fine arts faculty agreed upon the following student awards: Award for Excellence: Z’Ane Davis-Smith ‘15, Certificate of Merit recipients: Ceandria Mars ‘15, Kevin Glotfelty ‘15, and Rochell Ann Yacat ‘15. The Bishop McNamara Baseball team, aided by DeMatha Stags mistakes and an inside-the-park homerun, caught a wave of momentum and scored 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to upset the Stags. “After 27 years of coaching,” Bishop McNamara Coach Larry Prange said, “you don’t see that one every day.” Five Bishop McNamara Seniors were each given $1,500 scholarships through their participation with the ACE Mentoring Club. Congratulations to John-Elias Baldwin ‘14, Anthony Diehlmann ‘14, Gabrielle Enguillado ‘14, Si Eun Jung ‘14, and Alexander Scott ‘14. Damian Prince ‘14 was selected to the Under Armour AllAmerica Bowl Game to compete with his fellow athletes. Damian was one of 90 athletes nationally selected for the event. The offensive tackle committed to the University of Maryland in a nationally broadcast episode of ESPN. Justice Stanton ‘14, Ashleigh Williams ‘14, and Erin Musselman ‘14 were selected as Maryland Capitol Pages in the Maryland Capitol page Program. By selecting three students from Bishop McNamara, the School sent more students to the program than any other school in the state. The women’s Varsity Track and Field team finished in second place at their WCAC Track and Field

Bishop McNamara students were able to experience the merging of cultures when 30 Spanish students spent almost two weeks with host families. The students, accompanied by three teachers, traveled from Pamplona, Spain — home of the world famous San Fermin, or Running of the Bulls. The Award Winning Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab proudly presented the 10th Anniversary of the Night of Jazz. The Men’s Varsity Basketball team upset St. John’s College High School in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) quarterfinals to reach the WCAC semifinals despite being the lowest seed in the tournament. Brandon Coleman ‘10 and Jerome Couplin III ‘09 signed as Undrafted Free Agents for the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions in the National Football League Tom Gleason ‘85, Director of Undergraduate Physics at the University of Maryland College Park, visited the Bishop McNamara campus to present to the physics classes. Bishop McNamara High School was voted the best Private School by the Prince George’s County Gazette. Bishop McNamara also won Best Teacher of the Year, with Darrell Holloman ‘00 taking the honors. Jr. Scientists in the Sea at Bishop McNamara is a new club that has caused quite the excitement. The club moderators are Open Water Scuba Instructors and Emergency First Responder Instructors with the UAS, Jay V. Haigler ‘78 and Vanessa Haigler LR ‘77. Faculty moderator and teacher, Mr. Jason Clark, completed his open water scuba certification training. A Memorial Garden was opened and dedicated on April 29, 2014 to the memory of Terrell Edelen ‘14 who passed away in 2013. The garden was built to honor the memory of Terrell and give the community the opportunity to likewise honor deceased loved ones.

Scholarships Byrne and Osborne Family Scholarship The Byrne and Osborne Family Scholarship was established to honor the lives and memory of John and Doris Byrne and James and Lucille Osborne by their 15 children in thanksgiving for the faith and education their parents provided them. Provided annually to a student who maintains a minimum 2.6 GPA or higher, is in need of financial assistance and is in good academic and disciplinary standing. KEO Memorial Scholarship The Kevin E. O’Neil (KEO) Scholarship will be awarded annually to a male student at Bishop McNamara in memory of Kevin O’Neil through a scholarship established by his family and Passports to College, Inc. The honoree will be named annually at the Mother/Son Brunch. Johnson Memorial Scholarship The Johnson Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the hard work, dedication, and lives of a family committed to the legacy and importance of Catholic education. It is guaranteed for four years provided the recipient maintain a 3.2 grade point average or above and remain in good standing with the school. Carol Welteroth Marvin Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is endowed by the Marvin family and is presented annually to an 8th grade student who has been accepted into Bishop McNamara High School, and who has by their personal witness, academic integrity and faith in action enriched their church, school and community. Connie Oliver Scholarship Mr. Ira Oliver endows this scholarship in memory of his wife, Connie. This scholarship is presented annually to a Bishop McNamara High School football player who has exhibited excellence in the classroom and on the field of competition. Erin Ashley Mercer Scholarship This scholarship is endowed by the Mercer Foundation in honor and memory of their daughter Erin Mercer and is awarded annually to a Bishop McNamara High School student who demonstrates the qualities of faith, scholarship, leadership and service. Eugenia “Toni” Millner Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is endowed by the family and friends

of the much beloved distinguished faculty member Mrs. Toni Millner and is offered annually to a young man and woman who demonstrate those qualities. Herndon Family Art Scholarship The Herndon Family Art Scholarship shall be presented annually to a rising senior at Bishop McNamara High School at the discretion of the Art Instructor. The young woman or man who receives this $500 scholarship must exhibit a love for and commitment to the visual arts and remain in good academic standing. Michael J. Mammano Memorial Scholarship The Michael J. Mammano Memorial Scholarship shall be presented annually to a rising senior at Bishop McNamara High School who is a member of the school’s varsity football team. Roscoe C. Perkins, Jr. Aeronautical Scholarship The Roscoe C. Perkins, Jr. Aeronautical Scholarship Award will be presented annually to a young man or woman who has exhibited academic excellence in the field of science, mathematics, or engineering. Sister Sharon Kozuch Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was founded in honor of Sister Sharon Kozuch and is offered to an 11th grade woman who exemplifies the qualities of faith, enthusiasm for learning, co-curricular participation, and demonstrates financial need. Stewartship Legacy Scholarship The scholarship, endowed by the Stewart family, is awarded annually to a young woman or man at Bishop McNamara High School who daily lives out the ideals of faith, leadership and service. Unforgettable Spirit Randell Duncan Memorial Scholarship The BMHS Class of 2000 in memory of their classmate, Randell Duncan, endows this scholarship. The scholarship is presented to a sophomore or junior student who develops a solution for youth and/or young adult violence so that we can all make the necessary steps towards peace. BMHS Fine Arts Fund The Fine Arts Programs are African Dance and Music, Band and Orchestra, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts.

Without your support, they could not exist. The Bridge of Hope Fund President/CEO Marco J. Clark ‘85 created the Bridge of Hope Fund in 2010. This fund is an emergency source of financial aid for seniors whose families have experienced an economic crisis or financial hardship during their child’s senior year. Saint Andre Bessette Tuition Assistance Fund The Saint Andre Bessette Tuition Assistance Fund is utilized to assist our freshman, sophomore, and junior families who encounter unexpected financial hardship.

Lamberth/Muldrow Scholarship This scholarship is presented in honor of Mrs. Ressie K. Lamberth and Mrs. Mary B. Muldrow to a freshman student. Scholar-Athlete Scholarship The scholarship for scholar-athlete is presented to a student who has demonstrated the discipline and focus to pursue both high school athletics and excellence in the classroom. Leona Beatrice McClain Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who aims to serve others in his/her community, embraces a life of faith and has a drive to further himself/herself through educational achievement.

Project PRIDE Scholarships The Project PRIDE Program was established as an admissions inclusion program to assist our most profoundly at risk students. The purpose of the program is to begin work with 9th grade students. See further description on website. Heather Gossart Project PRIDE Scholarship This scholarship is offered to one or more 9th grade students who have been accepted into the Project PRIDE academic inclusion program and demonstrates verifiable financial need. Scholarship is renewable annually and progressively reassessed. See further description of the scholarship on website. General Steve Stevens’ Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is endowed in memory of Bishop McNamara friend and patron General Steve Stevens and is offered to one of more students who exemplify qualities of scholarship, leadership, and community involvement. The Frederick and Matilde Durling Memorial Scholarship This scholarship shall be presented annually to two (2) students at Bishop McNamara High School who are enrolled in the St. Joseph Program. See further description of the scholarship on website. “Focus” Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a freshman student who has demonstrated and sustained positive motivation toward learning throughout their first academic year of high school. Reginald J. Brady Scholarship Presented in honor of Mr. Reginald J. Brady, this scholarship is for those whose dedication and commitment to excellence in working with Bishop McNamara is evident in our school community. Harmon Alumni Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student entering his senior year that demonstrates a love of school, and has served and represented the school with character, honor and zeal. Domenick and Jacquelin Ruggiero Service Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates an exemplary effort to serve the BMHS community and larger local community as a student volunteer. Holy Cross Brothers Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore who through personal example of conduct, self-discipline, and service demonstrates those ideals of what a Holy Cross School seeks to be. Integritas Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a junior who shows themself to be an example of integrity, character, and strives towards completeness.

OUR MISSION Bishop McNamara High School, a college preparatory school in the Holy Cross tradition, exists to educate and form young men and women in and through the Catholic faith.
