I’m sure you saw the cover of this month’s Connection and asked yourself, “What is that?” Although it may not be the most obvious to come to mind, the short answer is that graphic has been developed to help illustrate the five foundations of the Chamber EDC. The long answer is a bit more complicated, but here’s some additional context.

In 2019, the Chamber EDC was born from the merger between the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce and the Bismarck-Mandan Development Association (BMDA). While many of you have had a front row seat to the evolution of our organization over the past four years, you may not have had a chance to bear witness to the strategic plan that has guided this success. Shortly after the merger, we developed a strategic plan to guide a cohesive vision as one entity leading our community’s economic development and policy development activities. It was done in the hopes that it would lead to even greater success than before… and it did!

We’ve seen our organization grow on the heels of two consecutive record-setting years. Our events are growing to the point that not only are we selling them out, but we’re having to move them to larger venues. Additionally, we’ve adopted new approaches to our business advocacy and economic development efforts that have led to continued growth for not only the Chamber EDC, but Bismarck-Mandan as a whole.

However,

there’s always room to grow in bigger and better ways.

Last year, with support from staff, our Board of Directors, and Executive Committee, we went to work developing our 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan. What resulted is a roadmap that represents the next evolution of the Chamber EDC that not only leads in economic development and policy development, but also provides an expanded role in supporting our members’ network development, professional development, and leadership development. More so, this plan and the accompanying five foundations are the answer to the question of why a business joins the Chamber EDC.

In this issue of the Connection, you’ll have the chance to read more about the process that led us to not only this Strategic Plan, but also laid the groundwork for our economic development strategic efforts—which you can also read about in this issue. I do hope you’ll take the time to learn more about both initiatives because they’re incredibly important the Chamber EDC and Bismarck-Mandan’s future.

Strategic planning isn’t always easy, but it’s always worthwhile. I’m incredibly excited for what’s to come and remain grateful for your continued support of this organization.

CHAMBER EDC DEVELOPS NEW STRATEGIC PLAN

Previously two distinct groups with different missions, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce and the Bismarck-Mandan Development Association (BMDA) merged in 2019 to create the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC.

“In those first few years after the merger, it made sense for us to focus on two things; business advocacy and economic development. Now that we’re entering the fifth year of the Chamber EDC, it’s time for us to expand our mission,” Chamber EDC President & CEO Brian Ritter says.

In order to develop this new strategic plan, the organization laid out a year-long process that began in early 2022 with a review of the organization’s previous strategic plan to determine what goals had been addressed previously or completed. Once that was complete, the Chamber EDC conducted its annual membership survey to determine the issues most important to them.

“The days of businesses joining an organization just because it was the right thing to do or it was an expectation, those days are gone,” said Ritter.

“If we’re going to remain relevant to our members, we have to change with them.”

Following the membership survey, Chamber EDC Staff went about developing a first draft of the new strategic plan and vetting that draft with Chamber EDC leaders. Finally, once suggested changes and revisions had been incorporated, the new Chamber EDC 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan was formally adopted by the organization’s Board of Directors.

“The most important thing to note is that as we approached the development of this newest strategic plan was to make sure that it represented the next evolution of the Chamber EDC” Ritter says.

An accompanying story in this month’s Connection will focus on one part of the Chamber EDC’s mission; economic development. However, economic development is only one of the five ‘foundations’ of the 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan along with: professional development, leadership development, network development and policy development.

NETWORK DEVELOPMENT

The Chamber EDC already has a robust lineup of events and opportunities for members to meet one another and grow their professional networks. Events like Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan, State of the Cities, the Outdoor Golf Scramble and Sporting Clay Shootout all were either sold out or set attendance records in 2022.

However, to keep events like those and others growing, the organization is looking to increase the level of sponsor involvement at existing events, but also add new types of networking events such as a ‘family-friendly’ activity to accommodate changing schedules and family dynamics. In addition, earlier this year Chamber EDC staff conducted the first of what could be a series of networking events targeting women business leaders in Bismarck-Mandan called Empowering Women in Business.

The Chamber EDC has long facilitated the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan Program and Student Leadership Network, while also supporting the Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network. However, leadership opportunities for business leaders go beyond the boardroom. Those opportunities extend to both elected and volunteer service in an effort to ensure that business leaders are helping keep Bismarck-Mandan a growing, thriving communities.

To address that need, the 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan calls for the establishment of a new online resource for business people consider such service. This new website, to be launched in early 2023, will include: available opportunities for volunteer or elected service, a ‘checklist for running’ and local business people who have been elected to office willing to serve as information resources. The Chamber EDC is also once again planning to host a candidate training session in partnership with the Bismarck-Mandan Board of Realtors in late 2023 or early 2024.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In 2022, the Chamber EDC developed multiple professional development ‘tracks’ found on their website at www.bismarckmandan.com and populated by content generated by the organization’s Business Development Series or strategic partners. The 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan aims to grow those offerings by expanding their original content and partnering with others to create new content.

One example of this new approach already being implemented successfully is a partnership with John Maxwell Leadership Training to offer a professional development series entitled “Developing the Leader Withing You 2.0” which has already sold out and had interest beyond the program’s capacity. Consequently, plans are underway for another course offering with John Maxwell Leadership Training later in 2023.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

Policy development was the primary role of the BismarckMandan Chamber of Commerce prior to the merger that created the Chamber EDC. Since the merger, the Chamber EDC has taken steps to improve its advocacy efforts at all three level of government; local, state and federal. Those efforts have already proven effective, but the new strategic plan outlines specific strategies to take the organization even further.

The most time-sensitive of those efforts is a recently launched process by which Chamber EDC Leaders and Government Affairs Committee members meet quarterly with the Bismarck-Mandan Legislative Delegation to develop the community’s next Legislative Agenda. Chamber EDC Staff is currently busy advocating that Legislative Agenda at the State Capitol with focuses on infrastructure development, workforce development, healthcare, education and economic development.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The last of the five ‘foundations’ outlined in the Chamber EDC’s 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan is economic development. These are the efforts the organization undertakes to keep Bismarck-Mandan, and the surrounding area, growing. In the past, those efforts were centered around activities in entrepreneurial development, business retention & expansion and new business attraction.

However, as the community has changed, so too have its needs in this area. Consequently, the Chamber EDC has also developed a new plan designed specifically to guide the organization’s economic efforts. The details of this plan are laid out in the accompanying story of this month’s Connection.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: EIGHT WAYS TO ASSIST A THRIVING MARKET

While it is only part of the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC’s 2023 – 2025 Strategic Plan, economic development is a big part. A really big part. That’s the reason behind engaging consultants from the Next Move Group to develop a plan specifically to guide the Chamber EDC’s economic development efforts.

As the Chamber EDC has found out over the last three years, the way that the organization does business can change dramatically in a very short time. Fortunately, what the Chamber EDC learned from Next Move Group was that Bismarck-Mandan is well positioned for economic development.

“(Next Move Group) typically works with groups in economically depressed states,” Chamber EDC Board Chair Wendy Van Duyne says. “The fact they were working in Bismarck-Mandan where we have so many strong economic development factors was really exciting. Our communities have been very fortunate to have a thriving economy. Building on that so we can continue that success for years to come was the primary takeaway for having the strategic plan.”

Development of the economic development plan started in early 2022 after the Chamber EDC engaged Next Move Group to look for ways in which the organization could improve in a region with an already strong economy. After months of interviews, the consultant returned with recommendations that the Chamber EDC is now implementing.

“It’s really proactive for a city to take a look at itself and say, ‘There’s a lot of positives going on but we’re always looking to make ourselves better,’’’ Next Move Group CEO Chuck Sexton says. “There’s a lot of communities that won’t put together a strategy until they are behind the eight ball. It was refreshing to work with Bismarck-Mandan and their leadership and be proactive.”

While some of the feedback received from local leaders supported continuing those economic development efforts that have led to BismarckMandan’s economic success, it was also noted that new approaches are needed in order for Bismarck-Mandan to continue to grow. "There are definitely some things suggested in the plan that were happening or were already in the works,” says Chamber EDC Vice President Nathan Schneider. “However, we can’t become complacent and the strategies developed by the Next Move Group will ensure that we never do.”

More specifically, the eight strategies included in the Chamber EDC’s new economic development strategic plan are:

1. Focus and develop marketing strategies for land and resources to attract new businesses.

2. Develop new industrial land. “Right now, our struggle is we don’t have available property for a large-scale project,” Schneider said.

3. Augment the existing business retention and expansion program by adding a survey component.

4. Developing more middle-income and multi-family housing options for those just starting careers.

5. Develop tribal partnerships.

6. Develop ways to grow talent (workforce) attraction efforts.

7. Develop a small-business growth program and define the Chamber EDC’s role in that.

8. Partner economic development efforts and government affairs efforts more closely. Conduct like-community visits to learn of economic development efforts in cities like Billings, Mont.; Sioux Falls, and Rapid City, S.D.; and Cheyenne, Wyo.

A ninth issue, supported by the Chamber EDC, would address quality of life aspects and include support of riverfront development and downtown redevelopment opportunities that other community groups already lead. For the continued success of the Bismarck-Mandan region, it’s important for the organization to support these efforts and the work that is currently underway.

Regarding the process of developing the plan, “This is trying to figure out what we don’t know, what we should know and how we go forward in innovative ways,” Chamber EDC executive board member Kevin Strege says. “Our consultants gave us options but only those people who live and work and care can decide which should be a priority. The next step is to go back to the key stakeholders and determine which comes first and which may be valid in a broad sense but aren’t right for our community here and now.”

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

A: I manage public affairs for BNSF Railway and in that role I serve as the main point of contact for the public and local and state officials.

Briefly tell us the history behind BNSF Railway and how you got started.

BNSF RAILWAY

MEMBER SINCE 2001

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted BNSF Railway?

A: North Dakota is particularly reliant on freight rail transportation given its location. I was aware of that before working at BNSF, but didn’t fully appreciate how reliant the nation’s economy also is on freight rail. Railroads touch every aspect of our daily living – BNSF moves the products and materials that feed, clothe, and supply and power our lives. Our company has been around in various forms for 170 years, but it’s as relevant today and will be in the future. That interests me and helps make each day at work different.

A: Looking back, it was the presence of the railroad that spurred growth of Bismarck and Mandan originally. Today, the railroad continues its strong presence here and that supports the operations and growth of other industries that rely on freight rail. Beyond service to our customers, we have more than 200 employees working in the region, with Mandan hosting one of our largest rail yards in the state. We’re a strong supporter of the Bismarck-Mandan communities because as they grow and prosper, our customers benefit and so do our employees and their families.

BNSF Railway has been a Chamber EDC member since 2001.

What trends are taking place in your industry?

A: Railroads move goods more safely and efficiently, on significantly less fuel with fewer emissions, than moving goods by the highway alone. Trains are three to four times more fuel efficient than their highway counterparts and lower greenhouse gas emissions by more than 75%. Our customers are able to reduce their environmental impact by shipping with BNSF. We’re exploring new ways to further reduce emissions and use more sustainable technology. BNSF is, for example, exploring battery electric and hydrogen locomotives, the use of renewable fuels, and idle control technology.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

A: Like with much of our daily lives, technology has changed railroading. Railroads invest heavily in technology to improve safety and service. Technology used across the rail network includes sensors along the track to monitor health of rail equipment and lasers and cameras to inspect the track. Additionally, positive train control in place on major routes can stop a train if it is speeding or entering the wrong track. We will continue leveraging technology in all aspects of our operations for safety and efficiency.

What does the future BNSF Railway look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?

A: We continue to help identify opportunities for growth in the Bismarck-Mandan area. BNSF has been bringing people and goods here for the last 150 years and see the future equally strong.

BNSF Railway became a member in 2001, why do you continue to renew?

A: We support organizations that are connected to the community and committed to keeping a vibrant and healthy economy.

What should other Chamber EDC members know about BNSF Railway that may assist them?

A: Freight railroads are a safe, cost-effective and sustainable way to move goods. BNSF’s presence in the community has a multiplier effect on all the other businesses who can operate and expand because they have access to a major railroad that connects them with the rest of the country and world.

HOLIDAY TALENT ATTRACTION RECAP

The Chamber EDC’s holiday talent attraction campaign has become an annual tradition.

The 2022-2023 holiday season was no different. This holiday season’s campaign, much like previous campaigns, focused on social media and online platforms. This year for the first time the campaign included ads on Snapchat.

This year also included a push to ex-patriots of Bismarck Mandan to return home. The campaign received over 725,000 impressions on all platforms over the nearly 7-week campaign which generated over 17,000 website visits. The campaign targeted states like Colorado, Minnesota, Washington, and Wisconsin among others.

BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH

The North Dakota Department of Commerce recently announced that an approximate total of $13.6 million of equity and venture funds will soon be available to early-stage North Dakota businesses through the recently launched Angel Match Program (AMP), a direct investment program administered by the North Dakota Development Fund (NDDF).

Applications for the AMP began Dec. 9.

Through the direct investment program, private investor investments in eligible business can be matched up to a maximum $250,000 per business. Businesses may only apply for funds if the total financing round is $2 million or less.

Investors may be individuals, LLCs, businesses, trusts, or an investment fund. Investors must be in, and remain in, compliance with state and federal securities laws, and invest only in qualified businesses that are issuing securities in compliance with state and federal securities laws.

CHAMBER EDC SEEKS BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING SPECIALIST

The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is seeking a Business Development and Marketing Coordinator. As the Business Development and Marketing Coordinator, your role would be to focus on assisting businesses grow their presence in Bismarck-Mandan by assessing their needs and identifying resources and programs to help.

Other duties include:

CHAMBER EDC ASSISTS IN BUSINESS EXPANSION

Chamber EDC staff assisted with a product expansion of a New Salem business. 6-in-1 Meats is a federally inspected meat processing facility.

The facility was purchased back in 2020 by six livestock producers. The plant is now expanding its cooked product line including sausage and snack sticks for their customers.

The Chamber EDC staff assisted with a Morton County Development Fund grant of $25,000 that will help with equipment purchases. 6-in-1 Meats currently employs two full-time and three part-time and is projecting to hire four more employees.

JOB SERVICE TO HOST JOB FAIR

Employer registration is now open for the Multi-Industry Job Fair on March 14th from 3:30pm – 6:30pm at the Bismarck Event Center.

The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is partnering with Job Service of North Dakota to host a multi-industry job fair. In 2022, there were over 450 potential employees that came through the door and there were 66 employers ranging from construction to financial institutions.

In 2021’s post-event survey, 75% of the employers said that they made an offer to a person they met with at the job fair. KRAUS-ANDERSON BEGINS CONSTRUCTION ON NEW POLYTECHNIC EDUCATION CENTER AT BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE

Kraus-Anderson has begun construction on a new $35 million Polytechnic Education Center at Bismarck State College (BSC) located at 1601 Edwards Ave. in Bismarck. The building is the only polytechnic education facility in the region.

Designed by ICON Architectural Group, the 89,486-squarefoot, state-of-the-art polytechnic center will feature project-based learning and nontraditional, hands-on collaborative working environments. The building will include two flex labs where business and industry can partner on developing projects and ideas; and provide space for operating and expanding new academic programming and equipment as well as advancing applied research.

The three-story building, connected by a skywalk to the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence, will also house a live event venue, a digital hive and a security operations center (SOC) as well as other state-of-the-art learning environments.

“North Dakota has tremendous natural assets that support economic growth in our state,“ says BSC President Doug Jensen. “The decision to invest in our polytechnic mission aligns perfectly with the state’s economic growth projects.”

The Polytechnic Education Center is expected to be completed in winter of 2024.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY AWARDED $6-MILLION GRANT TO ADDRESS CRITICAL COUNSELING SHORTAGE IN NORTH DAKOTA K-12 SCHOOLS

The last North Dakota Legislature realized the need for counselors in its rural state by mandating that each public K-12 school have one per every 300 students. This past fall, Dr. Carmelita Lamb, associate dean of the Liffrig Family School of Education and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Mary, experienced the crisis firsthand. She emailed approximately 90 K-12 administrators across North Dakota to inquire about the current state of counselor vacancies. This workforce analysis yielded a startling 24 counseling vacancies in the rural state of North Dakota that has approximately 123,000 K-12 students in 179 school districts.

Help is now on the way. With that data and individual testimony, the University of Mary became the beneficiary of a $6-million Department of Education grant through its Mental Health Services Professionals (MHSP) Demonstration Program. Out of 185 applicants, only 67 grants were awarded, and University of Mary was one of the highest. Mary is awarded $1.2 million each year over the next five years to support their new Accelerated Counseling Education for Student Success (ACCESS) program that educates and trains graduate students who want to become mental health professionals as counselors in K-12 schools.

“We wrote the grant proposal to assist K-12 children with their mental health needs,” added Lamb. “We wanted to help school districts who have been unable to attract counselor applicants; they do not have the opportunity to recruit. So, we are asking these administrators in all districts to look within their faculty and ask ‘Who wants to step up and earn a master’s degree in just two years to be the counselor of our school? And if you wish to do this, here’s the program for you.’”

The University of Mary's graduate counseling program is 60 credits and enrolls new students annually. For this grant program, students will begin each fall for the next four years - allowing for four cohorts. On the fifth year, any of these master’s degree participants from the previous cohorts can choose to come back and earn a value-added credential in clinical mental health. Because the counseling program is online, it assures graduate students can stay home and take courses online without leaving their community. The degree also requires a one-week summer residency on University of Mary’s campus. And, the best part, thanks to scholarship money from this grant, it is 100% free for the students who are accepted into the counseling program.

“Graduate students accepted into this program won’t have to pay one penny for their degree, it is all paid for — tuition, fees, books, licensure exams, internships, travel, one week residency — anything our participating graduate student needs during the two-year program, this grant scholarship covers it.”

Lamb adds, for generations, counselors always used to be about vocations, mainly helping answer the questions: What do you want to do for your career? Where do you want to go to college? And how do we help you get there?

“We’ve really seen a social shift in what counselors are being asked to support in K-12,” Lamb continued. “Right now, there is a tremendous amount of mental health disparity. For that, the University of Mary is deeply grateful and humbled by the tremendous show of confidence the Department of Education-Mental Health Service Professional (MHSP) Demonstration grant, has bestowed upon our master’s in K-12 counseling program. I have never been more certain of the critical need in our communities across North Dakota for this level of highly trained support for our children. Through ACCESS the most marginalized, rural populations of children as well as those living in urban environments will have a unique opportunity for mental health and vocational support as never before. North Dakota and the University of Mary are in a position to serve as a model for what can be accomplished for our children in a rural state when all partners come together for one unified cause—to build capacity in K-12 counseling for North Dakota.”

As of the 2020 census, the reported rate of poverty in North Dakota is 11%: counties with Native American populations report poverty rates as high as 28%. The school counseling profession helps students thrive academically, socially, emotionally in their lives and future careers. University of Mary’s graduate students study to prepare to meet the many needs of a diverse population in North Dakota, dealing with numerous challenges in their young lives.

BASIN ELECTRIC TO BUILD NEARLY 350 MILES OF HIGH-VOLTAGE TRANSMISSION LINE

To maintain reliable electricity and a stable transmission grid, Basin Electric is on track to energize nearly 350 miles of high-voltage transmission line in western North Dakota by the end of 2026.

The Neset-to-Northshore project, which includes a 230-kilovolt (kV) 27-mile-long transmission line and substation called Northshore between New Town and Tioga, will be energized in January 2023. Construction will be completed before the end of the year.

The project is one of five identified and approved by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) and summarized below. The Neset-to-Northshore project was identified through SPP’s Load Interconnection process and is needed to support load growth specific to the Parshall, North Dakota, area.

SPP identified three projects through its Integrated Transmission Planning (ITP) study. SPP’s ITP study is done annually, and assesses the five- and 10-year reliability, economic, and policy needs of the transmission system. When needs are identified, stakeholders such as Basin Electric submit projects that mitigate the needs in the system. SPP compiles a portfolio of projects that are approved by its board and then assigned to the stakeholders that submitted the projects.

The projects, approved by Basin Electric directors, include:

• Leland Olds Station-to-Tande 345-kV transmission project, which includes 175-miles of 345-kV transmission line and a new 345/115-kV substation. Pending easement acquisition and permitting, the project goal is to energize in 2025. The line will originate at the Leland Olds Station near Stanton, continue around the east end of Lake Sakakawea, and travel west to the Tande substation near Tioga.

• Roundup-to-Kummer Ridge 345-kV transmission line, a 35-mile line north of Killdeer is set to be energized in 2025. Final energization date will depend on easement acquisition and permitting.

• East Fork 345/115-kV substation near Wheelock, which will intersect an existing transmission line and add a new delivery point for Basin Electric Class C member Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative, is set to be energized in 2024.

The fifth project, identified by SPP’s Aggregate Transmission Service process, is required to provide additional transmission capability into Saskatchewan, Canada.

• Wheelock-to-Saskatchewan and Tande-to-Saskatchewan, 230-kV transmission lines, will connect to SaskPower transmission equipment at the Canadian border. The lines are approximately 50 and 60 miles in length, respectively. Basin Electric is the designated transmission owner for the upgrade in the United States, and SaskPower will complete the circuit within Canada. The project will provide export and import capabilities of up to 650 megawatts of electricity, strengthening the local and regional electric system.

The five projects represent an investment of nearly $725 million in high-voltage transmission infrastructure in western North Dakota.

For the Leland Olds Station-to-Tande and Roundup-to-Kummer Ridge transmission lines, Basin Electric’s right-of-way team is in contact with landowners to determine the preferred routes of the lines. The right-of-way team will begin contacting landowners regarding the Wheelock- and Tande-to-Saskatchewan lines in the coming weeks.

BSC AG PROGRAM RECEIVES GRANT TO ENHANCE CURRICULUM

The Bismarck State College (BSC) Agriculture, Technology, Food & Natural Resources program has been awarded a $79,141 grant from the CHS Foundation. The CHS Foundation is funded by charitable gifts from CHS Inc., the nation’s leading farmer-owned cooperative.

This new grant funding will be used to fund projects aimed at revitalizing current programs and purchasing new, stateof-the-art equipment to be implemented in Agriculture Systems Management course curriculum. Such equipment includes a hydraulics trainer and several other electronics-related trainers. The new equipment will give students hands-on experiences that will address necessary industry skill sets in electronics, hydraulics, automation, robotics and sensor technology through problem-solving and troubleshooting. These critical workforce skills will allow students to successfully operate modern agricultural machinery following completion of the program and students will be proficient in using diagnostic equipment, reading electrical schematics, operating electrical control devices and more.

BSC’s project director for this initiative, Associate Professor of Precision Agriculture Carmel Miller, said that this funding will be instrumental in preparing students for the work force. “Students entering careers as agronomists, precision technicians and farmers will benefit from what this brings to their instruction.”

“Precision agriculture and new technology is essential to production agriculture,” said CHS Foundation President Megan Wolle. “With the skills learned through BSC’s curric ulum, we’re confident that students will be well-trained and ready to use this equipment as they pursue careers at cooperatives, ag businesses or their own farming operations.”

This most recent CHS Foundation gift to BSC is an outcome of a long, successful partnership between the CHS and the BSC Foundations. Since 2000, the CHS Foundation has invested in BSC Agriculture programs and students through contributions to scholarships, grants and Project CARE, an emergency fund that helps students in need.

KLJ ENGINEERING ANNOUNCES NEW BISMARCK LOCATION

KLJ Engineering LLC (KLJ), announced the organization’s plans to relocate its Bismarck office to the Grand Pacific Center office building (400 E Broadway) in downtown Bismarck. The multi-disciplined engineering company signed a long-term lease agreement with Presidio Property Trust, Inc.

“We are extremely excited to relocate to the heart of downtown Bismarck. The revitalization efforts within the city of Bismarck make downtown an attractive location for us, and we look forward to joining the downtown community and all its amenities,” said KLJ CEO, Eric Michel. The company will occupy the fifth and sixth floors of the building, as well as a portion of the ground level.

“This space will provide a wonderful mix of individual and collaborative workspaces, places to connect with clients, and the KLJ community, as well as plenty of drop-in workspaces to accommodate our hybrid and remote workforce. How people work has evolved, and we look forward to creating a workspace that reflects a variety of working arrangements,” said Cody Aldinger, vice President of facilities and information technology. Construction will begin in the first quarter of 2023, with an anticipated move-in in late fall, or early winter 2023.

A: The Central North Dakota Cancer Registry (CNDCR) is an integral part of the cancer programs at Sanford Bismarck, CHI St. Alexius, and the Bismarck Cancer Center and provides an accurate database of cancer cases in the region. Hundreds of pieces of data, including patient demographics, medical history, diagnostic studies, treatment, and patient follow-up are recorded in the cancer registry database. This information is used as a resource for surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists to plan continuous quality care. Currently, the most frequently diagnosed cancers in North Dakota are breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancers. Cancer registries help measure and study the burden of cancer in our communities, to help identify the possible causes of these cancers, and to find the best treatments for future patients.

Q: WHAT IS A “SHOP CONDO” AND WHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR?

A: A shop condo is an industrial shop that has been divided into individual shops and each owner takes title to their individual shop. Many shops are typically available to rent, but in the shop condo scenario, the owner actually purchases and owns their shop so they don’t pay rent. Interestingly, Bismarck was one of the first communities in North Dakota to embrace and develop shop condos. Thanks to some very creative developers, Bismarck has now enjoyed shop condo development for over two decades. Hundreds have been built, sold and occupied and this spring, we will see over 100 new shop condos come available.

These started out selling for as low as $70 PSF but today the asking prices are anywhere from $136 to $150 per square foot. Many use them to store their toys and use them as “man caves”. Others find these to be the perfect solution for small business owners to operate their small business out of and to establish equity in commercial real estate. To date, we have not seen the value of these shop condos drop in our area. And yes, there will be one available for you this spring.

NDWBC ANNOUNCES DAUER AS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The North Dakota Women’s Business Center’s (NDWBC) Board of Directors announces the appointment of Christy Dauer as the organization’s next Executive Director.

Dauer’s nearly 20 years of experience working in or consulting with small businesses positions her as an exceptional leader for the organization.

Dauer received her BS in Business Administration from North Dakota State University and is an active member of the Fargo-Moorhead community. She started her relationship with the NDWBC as a volunteer. In 2019, she moved from her corporate roots to the non-profit sector and opened the NDWBC’s Eastern North Dakota Small Business Administration Program.

Prior to being named Executive Director, Dauer was the Senior Program Director at NDWBC, providing oversight of all client services and programming. She was instrumental in establishing NDWBC’s certified business coach program, the development of NDWBC’s women’s business leadership program and went viral with the popular Strong Women, Strong Coffee live programming.

In this role, Jodi will oversee operations for Bismarck and Minot Anne Carlsen services. Originally from Buffalo, SD, Duttenhefer earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Creighton University and a Master of Human Services with a specialization in Nonprofit Management from Capella University. Duttenhefer has many years of experience, including work in residential settings, schools, and community-based services.

NDPC WELCOMES KLUTE AND KAUTZ

The North Dakota Petroleum Council (NDPC) announced two new hires, Ryan Klute and Reva Kautz.

As Regulatory Affairs Manager, Ryan Klute will manage the Regulatory Committee within the organization that is made up of industry experts. His focus will be on the ever-changing Federal Regulatory landscape and spearheading research and response for the NDPC. Ryan is from York, Nebraska and has a bachelor’s degree in Geology. His extensive experience as a consultant in the oil and gas industry will provide NDPC with regulatory knowledge as seen from multiple viewpoints.

As Communication Director, Reva Kautz, will be creating the narrative for our members through social media posts, website updates and other media requests of NDPC. She will also be taking on communications and promotion aspects of the North Dakota Petroleum Foundation, assisting Tessa with community outreach efforts. Reva was raised in southwest North Dakota and has worked in public relations, communication, outreach, sales, and marketing roles in Bismarck for many years. She has her MBA from University of North Dakota.

NDIRF’S WINGENBACH EARNS AINS DESIGNATION

The North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund (NDIRF) is proud to announce Member Services Representative Carrie Wingenbach recently received an Associate in Insurance (AINS) designation.

The Associate in Insurance (AINS) designation provides a broad understanding of the insurance industry for insurance professionals. To receive this designation, Wingenbach completed courses and tests in general insurance, commercial insurance, and commercial risk management.

CAPITAL CREDIT UNION PROMOTES LAGASSE

Jillian Lagasse was recently promoted to chief marketing and member experience officer at Capital Credit Union. In this position and as a member of the credit union’s Executive Team, Lagasse will manage all aspects of the credit union’s Marketing Department and Contact Center, as well as employee training and other areas supporting the overall member experience.

Lagasse graduated from the University of Mary in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in social science/business. She is a current chair of the Local Issues Committee for Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC and Optimist Impact Grant for Bismarck Optimist Club and is a member of the University of Mary Alumni Association and Missouri Valley Family YMCA Board of Directors.

Lagasse has been with Capital Credit Union since July 2018, most recently as vice president of marketing and member experience. She and her husband Ryan live in Mandan with their three daughters.

MCCORMICK JOINS PEDIATRIC PARTNERS

Cody McCormick joins Pediatric Partners, a member of the Sevita family, as the Mental Health and Applied Behavior Analysis programs manager. He is originally from Wisconsin, but recently relocated to Bismarck with his wife, Becca, and two kids, Lucy and Leo.

McCormick received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, his Masters in ABA from St. Cloud State University and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is a licensed mental health provider in several states and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst since 2017, with a decade of experience in working with children with various developmental disabilities.

In his free time, McCormick enjoys being outdoors (golfing, trap shooting and fishing) and spending time with his family. He is also an avid sports fan, particularly the Green Bay Packers and Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Lance is a graduate of Moorhead St. University with a BA in Accounting and has a proven track record as CFO. He has been responsible for general accounting, finance, processes improvements, strong leadership, and money management. Lance will be reporting directly to the CEO and will be responsible to help collaborate on the direction and growth of our organization. As Director, Lance’s daily duties will include oversight of our finance and accounting activities at BAC. In addition, his role will focus on process improvements, cash flow management, vetting new opportunities, and growing profitability.
