try in order to escape poverty. Texas is home of the most compelling monument to the African American in the world. This monument is more than a visual expression of our involvement in the history and evolution of Texas--more than bronze memorializing historic struggles and triumphal experiences. It is a testament to the belief
that when all citizens work together and respect each others views and work through the Democratic process that our founding fathers left us, only then can we heal. It was Texas Republican Governors who signed bills to create 19th of June Emancipation Day as a State Holiday and the bill to build Tejano and African American Memorials on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol My maternal family fought in the Battle at Goliad, my father’s side helped build the State Capital and later fought in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. All of our Black War Heros are memorialized in this monument. Look for your Texas families here. They are HERE, those brought here in chains, those who led the way for integration in our public schools and anniversaries. We need to continue to study our true history so that we learn how to combat the enslaving of our minds today. Take time to explore your family history and the role they played in shaping of America from the development of Jamestown to the American Revolution and most importantly the brave colored troops who gave their lives in the Civil War in Texas to free their families and save the Union. It was under a Republican aligned Mayor that initiated the drive for the Freedom Cemetery Memorial in Dallas. Recently, a Bridge was named after Ron Kirk, the first African American Mayor of Dallas. We have the most prolific African American museum in the southwest and the oldest black chamber in the US. Freedman’s Cemetery Memorial near City Place is a tribute to the slaves in Dallas whose years of toil and labor built & enriched America. The MLK Statue in Dallas, Texas stands in front of what was once the role model of the country for services to the poor. It’s now empty, a victim of rapid speed gentrification efforts.
Why are we in Turtle Creek and in a long forgotten cemetery when the MLK statue stands in a neighborhood where 25% of the children go to bed hungry, the streets lined with tent cities, crack heads,

REPRESENTATIVE ERIC JOHNSON CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF CONFEDERATE ICONOGRAPHY FROM CAPITOL GROUNDS Darryl E. Blair Sr.
Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) is leading the charge calling for the removal of Confederate plaques and statues from the Texas Capitol Complex. On August 16, 2017, Representative Johnson sent a letter to the Texas State Preservation Board, the keepers of the Capitol grounds, calling for the removal of a “Children of the Confederacy Creed” plaque from outside his office and to begin discussing the removal of all Confederate iconography from the Capitol and the Capitol grounds. He copied Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, and Texas House Administration Chairman Charlie Geren on the
letter. In his letter Representative Johnson stated:
cause of the Civil War was not to sustain slavery.
“Given the recent tragic events in Charlottesville, Virginia, I cannot think of a better time than the present to discuss the removal of all Confederate iconography from the Texas Capitol Complex.”
The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House replied. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor made remarks stating the need to keep the monuments and plaques in order to prevent “erasing history.” Speaker Straus called for a review of the “accuracy of signs and monuments around the Capitol.”
“The Confederacy exemplified treason against the United States and white supremacy. Texans do not extol treason against the United States or white supremacy as values.” He additionally described the historically inaccurate and offensive plaque outside his office, calling for its immediate removal. The plaque states the need to “preserve pure ideals” and honor “Confederate heroes” and states that the
Representative Johnson responded to his statement with the following: “I think given Speaker Straus’ intelligence and education, he could read the Confederate plaque outside my office in under a minute and then, after a 10 minute conversation with our Texas State

No task force needed. No interim committee needed. No study needed. Just a history book and a crowbar.” “At the end of the day, this is simply a matter of respect: respect for the truth and respect for the people who are hurt every time they have to read these untruths on the walls of their Texas Capitol.”
Rep. Eric Johnson The two new multi-million dollar structures have 21st Century education features and a tornado shelter integrated into the facility design. Each school has been designed so that any part of the facility – indoors and out – can be used as a learning space. Also, each campus facility will have natural lighting in every classroom and augmented energy efficiency. The two new future-forward facilities replaced the two outdated facilities that were more than 60 years old and part of the original buildings in the school district’s initial expansion. By Arielle Johnson
The 14th Annual Dallas Black Film Festival was held two weekends ago at The Art of Change Institute of Cultural Arts on August 11-13. The three day festival a mixture of new films by local artists and filmmakers from abroad, old black and white classics and animation. The DBFF was founded in 2003 by Larome Armstrong, who is also the founder of P.W.A.M.P. (People with a Message Production Filmworks & etc.). One of the films which was shown on Sunday was, “Uptight”, is a classic movie that was released in 1968. The story depicts a proud group of gun toting revolutionaries, who look a lot like the Black Panther Party, preparing themselves for a race war. A member of the police department encourages a non-revolutionary thinking black man with drinking issues, to become an informant and turn in one of the members for an under the table monetary award. Some people may consider the movie “Uptight” to be too controversial to be a part of anyone’s screening, however it definitely opens up the discussion for conversations about race relations. it is good to create these types of spaces where people can feel connected to each other, because it is exactly what is needed to start the conversation. Xavier Mitchell, an aspiring screenwriter, is a DBFF volunteer who stated, “Whatever he (Larome) needs me to do – clean, take money, work the snack bar, I do it.” This year was Xavier’s first time volunteering for the DBFF and he said, “I was most excited about seeing films I have never heard of. Some of them were ancient like black and white in Black face. Many were ancient but they were brilliant. The other component of the DBFF involves awarding the filmmakers, for which Larome has devised a unique way of awarding the best. Larome pays close attention to at-
tendees as they are coming into the venue, then later selects several people from the audience who are not family or friends of the filmmaker up for an award, help him choose the winners. This year the winners were, Kayla GilchristBest Documentary “Awakening”, Marcellus Cox – Best Independent Film “Rolling in the Deep” and Louie McClain who won second place for “Brick by Brick” a short animation film. Short film animation filmmaker Louie McClain says, “Primarily, our children are hearing stories about the Civil Rights Movement and slavery, but for the age group we are targeting, from 9 months to 5, we want to instill in them stories of empowerment, triumph and leadership.” “Brick by Brick” is one episode
