10 Character Flaws That Can Derail Even Good People Good people can become great, but usually they don’t. Part of the problem is good people are often unaware of how close they are to becoming great. What do I mean? The termination of only a few traits/habits/preferences is often enough to move someone much closer to “greatness”. This can mean greatness overall or in terms of some specific sport or skill. Want proof? Think about three friends or colleagues you know very well, and with each person imagine they no longer exhibited three traits that you know people around them commonly agree are their most annoying personality “thorns”. Then, imagine those three people no longer had their three “personality thorns”. How much closer would those three be to being great instead of just being good or average? I am betting a LOT closer. Sports psychologists often help athletes change only 1 or 2 thought or behavior patterns, and that brings greatness. Chew on this: A very small percentage of a person’s psychological makeup (say, 2% of their total set of personal traits/preferences/habits) can undermine the other 98% of their makeup that is healthy and positive. A trainload of healthy habits can be derailed by a few bad habits. Think about it: How many times have you said to yourself, “I really like X except they are so…” and ended your statement by naming one trait/habit/preference only? That ONE trait was a blockade to you forming a deeper, more trusting, longer term relationships with them. That ONE trait is also likely what I call a “derailer” – a major reason they are not promoted, are not a better parents, friends, etc. etc. Look in the mirror. Do you recognize the value of insightfully managing your thorns? If not, you are likely derailed and you do not even know it. Studies have shown that even supposedly mature organizational leaders often fail to lead because they have personality thorns that they defensively protect, leading to truly catastrophic consequences. Personality derailers are not simply annoying traits, but often kill your ability to grow, relate, or at work be promoted or lead a team. Good news. We behavioral science experts are learning which personality thorns are particularly likely to derail someone. Advanced behavioral science assessment tools are providing 360 degree x-rays into personality and character for children, parents, athletes, and business people. The following are 10 derailers that seem to not just irritate others, but stifle the personal and professional maturity process. Whatever age or role in life you are serving,
take heed: Enviousness You are not truly happy for others success, and you work too hard to “keep up” with others on a material level. Defensiveness Defensiveness toward being corrected or criticized. Generally hypersensitive people don’t mature, they just grow old. Aloofness If you come off as cold/distant, you will not be trusted or influential. Volatility Overly emotional people are attention hogs, and focus on themselves, not on the reality around them. Eccentricity Eccentrics are funny in the moment, but when building a team may lack the ability tone down their eccentricity to build rapport. Deeper relationships are absent. Entitlement You believe you deserve everything you want. A rampant epidemic attitude in our society. Unreliable Character You are unpredictable, and not trusted or confided in. Eagerness to Please You are more of a pleaser than an honest communicator. But your displeasure with things builds up and explodes at times. Morally Scrupulous You find fault with even small misbehavior. No one meets every one of your rules. Your best friend is yourself. Making Destructive Comments Needless sarcasm and cutting remarks erode any rapport you may have built up. Your relationships never “run deeper”. This is not a complete list, and if you want to know what your derailers are, you or your child can undergo a 360 degree evaluation which comprehensively yet concisely assesses your personality. For more information you may want to check out the following credible books, which are as applicable to parents (who can cultivate a child away from these tendencies early on) as they are to business clients/athletes: What Got You Here Won’t Get You There, by Marshall Goldsmith (New York Times Bestseller) & Why CEO’s Fail, By David Dotlich & Peter Cairo

The Dallas Morning News reports that the Toyota North Texas Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Arlington was created as an opportunity for seven counties to collectively honor the civil rights icon. But with one week to go, civic leaders, including the Arlington branch of the NAACP and the pastor of a Dallas megachurch, are condemning the appointment of Texas Gov. Johnson then intentionally ran Mr. Cruz’s and Mr. Rodriguez’s car off of the road and shot at them 16 times, killing Mr. Cruz and wounding Mr. Rodriguez. During closing arguments of the sentencing trial, the lead prosecutor on the case, Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Jason Hermus asked the jury, when weighing the length of the punishment, to consider the seriousness of the offenses against the victims, their families, and the community. “No ordinary person would have acted like this,” he said, “and if you believe that’s the case we have entered a very dark place in our society.” Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Gary McDonald served as second chair. In a tweet, the group asked the governor to decline the invitation to participate in the parade. While group leaders haven't publicly called for a boycott, they said in an email that they support people's right to do so. Among those supporting a boycott is Frederick D. Daniel’s request to not participate *************** was met with objection by the prince of the
eunuchs and his servant. However, with great persuasion the four were allowed to eat an alternative diet of pulse (vegetables) and water for 10 days. In the end, Daniel and his three friends pass the test and appear healthier than those that ate the King’s meal over the same period of time. In this their request was justified by their faithfulness to God and in the end respected by the servant. Isn’t it impressive how God works in the Hebrews favor? He does the same for us today when we faithfully put our trust in Him. Even more so, God seems to always have someone attentive to the misfortune of His children. For Joseph it was the keeper of the prison. For Moses it was Pharaoh’s daughter. For Daniel it was Melzar. In your time of despair just know that God has got you covered. The next test was an attempt to train the four men in “the ways and language of the Chaldeans” (Daniel 1:4). However, these young men from Judah had been prepared in advance by God with “knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom” (Daniel 1:17). So, when King Nebuchadnezzar sent for them to be tested he found them to be more competent than any of the pagan magicians and astrologers. For over twenty-one centuries believers have had to exhibit sincere faith in God to warn, preserve and at times deliver them from multitudes of confusion. What He did then He is still able to do to this day! Where is Your Faith In God (Rev. James Cleveland – Savoy Records 1985) Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith will keep you when your way seems dark; Faith, faith, where is your faith in God?
Word from the Clergy
Christians, you say that you love the Lord, And yet we complain that each day seems hard. Into each life some rain must fall; Faith, faith, where is your faith in God? Faith can move mountains, Faith can open the fountain, Oh, faith can help you succeed, Oh, faith can supply your every need; Where is your faith in God?

We are more than what people think of us
By The Sports Preacher Rev. Ronald Parish, Jr. As a very proud Black man, father and preacher I cringe at how the media portrays who we are and what we do. We are not a perfect species, but nobody is. We do however, have a good number of us that take care of our business and stand in the gap for those who don’t. That is truly what the Dad’s Breakfast at Dr Billy Earl Dade Middle School proved to the world on December 14. We had men from every race and background take time out of their day to brighten the day of a middle school child. Children don’t have the option to pick their parents, living condition, or neighborhoods. Its not their fault if one or both of their parents can’t or won’t raise them. To see the outpouring of love that was demonstrated by these 600 men was truly breath taking. I knew a few days before the event that the numbers were going to be staggering, but none of us knew how impactful it was going to be. This type of work does not happen in a bubble. It was truly a collaborative effort that I had the pleasure of leading. My role at Dade is the SBDM (Sight Based Decision Making) president. I have been in this role for 2 years. I have a wonderful and talented team that helps us undergird the school. A part of this team is Kristina Dove who works for Big Thought as a Senior Manager of Relations. She is a true jewel to the community and was ready to spring into action as she led the logistics of this grand event. Mrs. Ellyn Favors is the Liaison for Dade and if you know Mrs Favors
Rev. Donald Parish Jr. then you know how passionate she is and never thinks anything is to hard for God. Trustee Bernadette Nutall who serves as Trustee for District 9 was extremely instrumental as always. Bernadette has been a strong advocate for our children for many years and didn’t hesitate in stepping up to helping to ensure the success of this event. Last but certainly not least is Mrs Tracie Washington who serves dil-
igently as the principal of Dade. When Mrs Washington arrived, Dade was ranked dead last for all middle schools in DISD and now just 3 years later they rank near the top in every category. We are blessed to have her. God has blessed me with the ability to launch national television talk show: The Sports Preacher Show. The team that He has put around me are full of Emmy
,NAACP, and other prestigious award wining producers. As we launch this show this year, we are also working on continuing our father initiative nation wide. I invite you to join the movement at whatever level you choose. We do have a capital campaign on GoFundMe currently and we appreciate anything that you can do. In closing, I want all of us who work to hold the hood together to walk with a sense of pride and purpose because we did this collectively. We are more powerful, impactful, and dutiful than what is said about us. To the 600 men that were apart of this first step of a movement, get ready we are just getting started! To keep up with my endeavors and the movement please follow me on Instagram/Twitter: ipreachsports. For Facebook: The Sports Preacher. This is where the game goes deeper... Rev. PANTHERS RUN OUT OF TIME IN LOSS AT TEXAS
Coach Byron Smith HOUSTON– The Prairie View A&M men’s basketball team ran out of time in a 100-94 loss Saturday
night at Texas Southern. Trailing 86-57 with 6:33 remaining, the Panthers (5-12 overall, 2-1 SWAC) outscored TSU 37-14 down the stretch for the final margin. “Obviously the goal is to be successful,” said PVAMU head coach Byron Smith. “We didn’t give in. We could have easily given up tonight. I’m proud of the effort…I think we just started playing with our heart. I wish we would have started it like that. It was
a four-point game at halftime, and Texas Southern got hot early in the second half. They can do that in this building. We just said ‘hey, one play at a time,’ and the ball started falling” Gary Blackston scored a game-high 24 points and a game-high six rebounds and two assists. Zachary Hamilton scored 18 points and four rebounds, Keion Alexander scored a season-high 11 points, and Dennis Jones scored 10. After Texas Southern
(3-13, 3-0) got off to a hot shooting start in the second half, the Panthers chipped away. A pair of free throws by Hamilton and a fourpoint play by Blackston sparked the run. Blackston made five three-pointers during the final five+ minutes as PVAMU cut the deficit to 99-94 with three seconds remaining. In the first half, there were two ties and five lead changes. Jones’ nine-first half points and eight off
the bench by Starr kept the Panthers close as PVAMU trailed 41-37 at halftime. The Panthers return to action next Saturday at Grambling State in a doubleheader. The women’s game begins at 3 p.m., and the men’s game at 5:30 p.m. The PVAMU Sports Network broadcast begins with the pregame show at 2:45 p.m. at pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork.
