Ingredients • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped • 5 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • 2 teaspoons chili powder • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 chipotle chile en adobo, coarsely chopped, with 1 tablespoon sauce • 1 pound ground turkey or 12 ounces soy crumbles • One 12-ounce Mexican lager-style beer • One 14 1/2-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes, with their juice • One 15 1/2-ounce can kidney beans, rinsed and drained Directions

Stir in the tomato paste and the chipotle chile and sauce; cook 1 minute more. Add the turkey, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, and cook until the meat loses its raw color, about 3 minutes. Add the beer and simmer until reduced by about half, about 8 minutes. Add the tomatoes--crushing them through your fingers into the skillet--along with their juices and

Eva Coleman to chair NABJ convention ESTABLISHED IN 1960

National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Sarah Glover has named Dallas-area editor and journalism educator Eva D. Coleman as the 2018 NABJ Convention chairwoman. The largest gathering for journalists of color in 2018 will be held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center from Aug. 1-5. Coleman will lead the convention team. This year's theme is "NABJ18: Driving Journalism, Technology & Trust." President Glover praised Coleman for her decades of service since becoming a member in 1995. Coleman has served NABJ in numerous capacities, including chapter president, deputy regional director and regional conference co-chairperson. "Eva has been a phenomenal member and servant of NABJ. I appreciate her wide-ranging skill set and organizational expertise," said Glover. "Eva brings years of experience as an executive producer and entrepreneur. I am especially proud of her work on JSHOP, NABJ's high school journalism workshop, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists' (DFW/ABJ) Urban Journalism Workshop, of which she has directed the radio and television components for more than 15 years." Coleman says NABJ is near and dear to her heart. For years, she has brought her entire family, including her mother, to the national conventions. "This is definitely an honor to be named the chair of the NABJ national convention," Coleman said. "This appointment is one that I don't take lightly. NABJ has a history of providing excellent programming for our members and the industry. I am very appreciative to President Glover

Happy New Year from the Elite News

for having confidence in me to continue NABJ's rich legacy and I look forward to an exciting, informative, innovative, thought-provoking, productive convention that is beneficial to our entire membership while also providing groundbreaking leadership to others in the industry." Coleman is an honors graduate of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. A four-time Telly® award winning producer, as the executive producer of Frisco ISD-TV, she has garnered numerous awards including the inaugural Student Television Network Teacher of the Year 2012-2013. She is the former executive producer of Frisco High School's first-ever television program, RACC-TV, serving in that role and as broadcast journalism teacher from 2004-2008. In addition, Eva created and launched Ranger News Network (RNN) at Frisco's sixth high school, Lone Star, in 2010. Of her 23 years of experience in television broadcasting, she served eight as a producer for the television production company, PRIMEDIA Workplace Learning. Skilled in radio broadcasting as well, she also served as a Technical Operator for Dallas' KRLD 1080 AM for 12 years, where she ran the audio board for various programs, including Texas Rangers baseball broadcasts. From the inception of Dallas' KRNB 105.7 FM in September 1996 through May 1998, Coleman was an on-air radio personality there. In 2013, she completed studies as a Reynolds High School Journalism Institute Fellow at Arizona State University (Phoenix), having been one of 175 journalism instructors selected from

around the country to participate in the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) administered program hosted by five universities and funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. In 2014, Coleman was selected to serve on the State Board of Education's Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications, Committee 1 for the review of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for career and technical education. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a past president and current vice president of the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists (DFW/ ABJ), Coleman is the lifestyles editor for I Messenger Media (a conglomerate of three newspapers and an internet talk show). She also served as deputy director for NABJ Region VII and V from 2001-2007, and currently serves as NABJ Region III deputy director - west. Coleman is widowed and has two daughters, 16-year-old Cecily Simone and 11-year-old Evana Gabrielle. Pointing out that NABJ is the largest minority journalism organization of color in the nation, with a huge international contingent, Coleman said the programming and coordination of the national convention is critical especially when you consider changes in the industry. NABJ Founder Norma Adams-Wade agreed. "I've been very excited about the growth of NABJ under Sarah's leadership, and the choice of Eva as convention chair is just one more positive and forward-thinking decision that our president has made," said Adams-Wade, who is a contributing columnist and retired senior staff writer at The Dallas Morning News and still very active with NABJ nationally and locally, through DFW/ABJ. "Eva is experienced, meticulous, dedicated and a joy to work with. I'm looking forward to the convention and doing whatever I can to assist."

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson - after the President’s Remarks about Haiti and African Nations DALLAS, TX – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released a statement after the president’s most recent comments during a White House meeting discussing Haiti and African nations: “The president’s most recent comments about the immigrants from Haiti and Africa are beyond disgraceful. The president’s ongoing war against immigrants appears to be solely directed toward those immigrants of color. America is America because of the slaves who were bought, purchased and shipped here unwillingly from Africa and Haiti to build the infrastructure that makes this country what it is today. And if the president needs a reminder the home where he resides, The White House was built by slaves—immigrants. “No person’s merits or character should ever be attacked based on where they are from. I have been a strong advocate in protecting DREAMers, children who were unknowingly brought into this country by their parents, and those who benefit from Temporary Protection Status

(TPS) who have fled civil unrest or natural disasters in search of a better life. My hope and continuous fight is that we will have the opportunity to fix our immigration system so it continues to be diverse and inclusive of those immigrants who are often overlooked from parts of the world such as Africa. May the president’s ignorance not impact the growth of ideas, innovation and development from immigrants who are willing to contribute to building a better union.”

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson - in Recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day DALLAS, TX – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released a statement in recognition of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the national day of service that is observed annually on third Monday of January: “On Monday, January 15, 2018, we honor the tireless efforts of a great man, Civil Rights leader and hero to many across the world, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He fought fervently for the rights of millions of people, not just in the South, but across the country, who were fighting Jim Crow laws that continued to plague the country.

ELITE NEWS

“This year we are witnessing changes to laws that impact those from different backgrounds. The American dream should not be for one group of people to experience, but should be experienced by all. However, that can only be achieved through equality and mindsets to be changed in how we view our neighbors, as Dr. King taught us. “Dr. King’s legacy of courage and inspiration motivate us to believe in a better tomorrow. ‘Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane,’ said Dr. King. So it is beyond disappointing that in over 50 years we continue to struggle in accessibility to basic human rights such as health care or economic stability. “As a senior Member of Congress from the state of Texas, I have witnessed firsthand and continue to participate in the long sought out fight for peace, justice and equality for Texans and all Americans. We must remain diligent and engaged in defining how our nation will achieve this equality. This weekend many will participate in service projects in their local communities to help those who are less fortunate. May our actions continue to reflect our gratitude of the service made by Dr. King and all the civil rights leaders that came before us.”

For Your Health

Living with LUPUS Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments. The most distinctive sign of lupus — a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across both cheeks — occurs in many but not all cases of lupus. Some people are born with a tendency toward developing lupus, which may be triggered by infections, certain drugs or even sunlight. While there's no cure for lupus, treatments can help control symptoms. Factors that may increase your risk of lupus include: Your sex. Lupus is more common in women. Age. Although lupus affects people of all ages, it's most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45. Race. Lupus is more common in African-Americans, Hispanics and Asian-Americans. “Black women had very high rates of lupus, with an incidence rate in Georgia nearly three times higher than that for white women, with significantly high rates in the 30-39 age group,” said principal investigator, S. Sam Lim, MD, MPH, associate professor in the Division of Rheumatology at Emory University School of Medicine. “These are young women in the prime of their careers, family and fertility. This means a severely compromised future, with a disease that waxes and wanes, affecting every aspect of daily living for the rest of their lives.” The LUMINA Study: In 1993, medical researchers set out to

determine why there was such disparity between lupus in Whites and lupus in people of color. Those researchers focused on the question of nature versus nurture. What researchers discovered early on was that genetic and ethnic factors, or nature factors, play a larger role in determining lupus prevalence than socioeconomic nurture factors. Furthermore, the study suggests that genetics may be the key that unlocks the reason why lupus affects African Americans and Hispanic women more than other people of color. Further findings from the LUMINA study: Lupus patients of Hispanic and African-American descent have more active diseases at the time of diagnosis, with more serious organ system involvement. Whites were of higher socioeconomic status and older than the either Hispanic people or African Americans. Important predictors of disease activity in these two minority groups were variables such as abnormal illness-related behaviors. As time passed, the total damage became worse for the two minority groups than that for the whites, although the differences were not statistically significant. Disease activity also has emerged as an important predictor of death for this group of patients. Consistent with lower disease activity, Whites exhibited lower mortality rates than Hispanic people or African Americans. Ten years after the LUMINA study In 2003, scientists revisiting the LUMINA study 10 years later came to even more interesting conclusions: Lupus presents itself more severely in African Americans and Hispanics from Texas than it does in Whites and Hispanics from Puerto Rico. Those patients who lacked health

insurance experienced acute lupus onset and expressed certain genetics (HLADRB1*01 (DR1) and C4A*3 alleles) had more severe lupus. The severity of damage to organs stemming from lupus or the adverse effects of lupus could be predicted based on age, the number of American College of Rheumatology criteria met, disease activity, corticosteroid use, and abnormal illness behaviors. Most revealing: One of the key factors in determining mortality was where a person stood financially with respect to poverty. People with lupus who were poorer financially were more apt to die of lupus or complications stemming from the disease, in part because of limited access to healthcare. Information from the 10-year study will be used to delve further into the nature or nurture question and may yield new ways of focusing on and eliminating health disparities in the United States. Hello, It is our hope to "bring a movement" to the southern sector of Dallas County and the DFW metroplex that has been missing "for" far too long a visible, documented, consistent, support for this suffering called, Lupus. Like many lupus patients it hit me unknowingly. I was diagnosed with lupus in 2015 after several visits to the ER doctor visits for mysterious aches, pains, swelling, and blood clots. While I have an amazing team of physicians behind me where is the rest of my support? There is a very active supportive, visible and effective Lupus Foundation of America, North Texas Chapter in Addison but just like sickle cell patients who have suffered for decades, those patients with Lupus in Oak Cliff, DeSoto, West

Dallas, South Dallas, Arlington, Lancaster, Cedar Hill, etc. need resources within "distance" to access much needed SEMINARS, ROUDNTABLES, EVENTS, AWARENESS ACTIVIIES, just as MADD and other such groups started in their formative years. “Living with Lupus" needs active physicians, supportive drug manufactures, stakeholders of all walks of life who are concerned and passionate for the delivery of outstanding care and services for these patient's of this segment of the county. ZIP codes, income or politics should not determine healthcare excellence. Will you attend and volunteer your support, time, energy and suggestions for those dire citizens who live in the southern sector? Next weekend, "3535 Studios" located at 3535 Marvin D. Love Freeway, Dallas, Texas 75224 will be hosting the 2nd Annual Divaday Donation Drive with a “Living With Lupus” a free Seminar on January 13th at 10am. We want “Living with Lupus” to become an immediate go-to for southern Dallas County lupus patients that are suffering in this target market of north Texas who have gone without for so long. With monthly or quarterly meetings/seminars featuring healthcare professionals, nutritionists, fitness experts, financial planners, area colleges, someone to help with disability paperwork and any and everything that those suffering from this terrible illness could benefit from. We look forward to what’s to come and welcome all suggestions. Thank you!! Have a blessed day, To'Ccorra E. eunuchs and his servant. However, with great persuasion the four were allowed to eat an alternative diet of pulse (vegetables) and water for 10 days. In the end, Daniel and his three friends pass the test and appear healthier than those that ate the King’s meal over the same period of time. In this their request was justified by their faithfulness to God and in the end respected by the servant. Isn’t it impressive how God works in the Hebrews favor? He does the same for us today when we faithfully put our trust in Him. Even more so, God seems to always have someone attentive to the misfortune of His children. For Joseph it was the keeper of the prison. For Moses it was Pharaoh’s daughter. For Daniel it was Melzar. In your time of despair just know that God has got you covered. The next test was an attempt to train the four men in “the ways and language of the Chaldeans” (Daniel 1:4). However, these young men from Judah had been prepared in advance by God with “knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom” (Daniel 1:17). So, when King Nebuchadnezzar sent for them to be tested he found them to be more competent than any of the pagan magicians and astrologers. For over twenty-one centuries believers have had to exhibit sincere faith in God to warn, preserve and at times deliver them from multitudes of confusion. What He did then He is still able to do to this day! Where is Your Faith In God (Rev. James Cleveland – Savoy Records 1985) Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith will keep you when your way seems dark; Faith, faith, where is your faith in God?

Word from the Clergy

Christians, you say that you love the Lord, And yet we complain that each day seems hard. Into each life some rain must fall; Faith, faith, where is your faith in God? Faith can move mountains, Faith can open the fountain, Oh, faith can help you succeed, Oh, faith can supply your every need; Where is your faith in God?

Sports Page: Does God cheer for teams? ‘That Play Right There Was God’: Diggs, Dings and Dumbfounded Vikings On How They Stunned Saints!!!! Stefon Mar'sean Diggs is an American football wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Vikings in the fifth round, 146th overall of the 2015 NFL Draft. He played college football at Maryland. His education: Our Lady of Good Counsel High School Some of you watched the playoff NFL games this week. While others held true in Boycott support of Collin Kapernick..... Some of us participated in the many MLK celebrations. Most of us have all heard the statements by athletes and sports players..."My father who died last year of cancer saw this game in heaven". or, "My mom is up in heaven cheering this game and this win is for her"! 1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. Such statements may have biblical implications or even proof that God is a sports fan and has certain teams he cheers for. I really wonder If God spends his time watching Alabama and Georgia versus some horrific war or famine in the world.. But we all now that God is; Omnipotent is from the Latin omni- ("all") and potent- ("power"), and when the word is applied to God, it means He is "all-powerful.". If God is the Creator of all things (Genesis 1:1), it follows that He must have power over all things at all times. AS well as Omnipresent, and Omniscient... SOOOOOOO maybe he has the super power to stop floods, wars, famine and snow storms as well as a blitz from the blind side and a deep throw to a doubled covered speedster. Maybe God is only a Brady fan? I doubt this

seriously. God surely was a Paul, Peter, David, John the Baptist and Lazarus fan. I watched on CNN years ago how a lady was sky diving and she was pregnant and her Shute did not open and she plunged to her death. BUT wait.. God saved her or somebody did and she lived to tell her story.

Amazing things happen to ordinary people that can't be explained or realized.. Therefore is it safe to believe that God played some role in it and changed the outcome. Did God allow Trump, the holocaust, slavery and cancer to be the impact that they all had and have.. "'Lucifer, son of the morning,'" the anointed covering cherub, resided in the presence of God (Isa. 14:12; Eze. 28:14).1 Scripture says, "'You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty....You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you'" (Eze. 28:12, 15). Although sin's rise is inexplicable and unjustifiable, its roots can be traced to Lucifer's pride: "'Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor'" (Eze. 28:17). Lucifer refused to be content with the exalted position his Creator had given him. In selfishness he coveted equality with God Himself: "'You have said in your heart; "I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne Evil did not originate with God. He who "'loved righteousness and hated lawlessness'" (Heb. 1:9) is not to blame for the world's misery. Satan, a fallen angel, is responsible for cruelty and suffering. We can better understand robberies, murders, funerals, crimes, and accidents—however heartbreaking— when we see them in the framework of the great controversy.

The cross testifies to both the destructiveness of sin and the depths of God's love for sinners. Thus the great controversy theme teaches us to hate sin and to love the sinner. WE ALL are like a child and will reason if God is so powerful.. He can stop pain and suffering or crime and oppression. There would not be a need for MLK,Susan B. Anthony, Gandhi or Mother Teresa... Oprah Winfrey says there is no such thing as luck.. Luck is defined as Opportunity meeting Preparation. I firmly agree with this sentiment. However, Does God pick teams and sides and gives the edge to certain teams and players over others??? “I will prepare and some day my chance will come.” ― Abraham Lincoln Should I be rude or mean or suggest that a person should not have faith that God was in the plans for his team to win.. or the other team who played just as hard and long should loose by one point? Does a super bowl team love the lord more than the looser of the world series.? We’re so quick to calculate from our human perspective how God is going to be able to do His work. Before Jesus fed the 5,000, He asked Philip, “Where are we going to buy bread, that these may eat?” (John 6:5). Here were about 20,000 hungry people (including women and children) in a remote place. The disciples had already told the Lord their solution: “Send them away, so that they can buy bread” (Mark 6:36). But the Lord tested Philip by asking, “Where are we going to buy bread?” It was a humanly impossible situation. God brings us to the end of our strength so that we will trust in His ability to do the impossible. The question becomes how do we glorify Gods name and purpooe if Leborn wins the final's? By nature we all trust in ourselves most of the time, and in God only when we really have to. If we trust in ourselves, then we glory in ourselves. But God’s

purpose is that we glory in Him alone. So through various means He graciously brings us to the place where we have no hope except in Him, so that we trust in Him and He gets the glory. Did MJ. Magic, Joe Namath or OJ lead you to Christ? Did the 16 NBA rings the Boston Celtics won make you a better Christian? Does tailgating help your god centered life? I don't think God is a BIG Ben fan or the cause my Steelers to loose to those bums from Jacksonville. WE did not win because our team was not better in every sense of the word as it relates to competition, preparation and execution. Real Talk! On my Sabbath I would not watch games thinking that God would not bless my team.. DUMB idea.. real dumb.. but Satan tricked me into think that. Conclusion: I don't think God is much of a sports fan and he does not pick and choose games depending on the Vegas spread or who has the best 3rd down conversion. I also don't think my dear loving relatives who are sleep in Jesus are watching games in heaven with their favorite jersey on. Lets be clear.. the devil is a liar.. always will.. no doubt about it.. Praying before games to be safe and come out alive and uninjured is ok.. Praying for a win and if you win is not a blessing from God or some indication he heard your prayer and held back the other team defense. The purpose of life is to be ready for his return and show others how Christ lives in you. “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” God is not in winning or losing of games in sports arenas.. God and the trinity play a big role in your salvation.. nothing else matters! not even a good 40 time! Marvin Earle
