WORD FROM THE CLERGY Worth | Ephesians 5:1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children. || Ephesians 5:1 NIV The basis for a Christian’s acceptance is Jesus Christ’s death on the cross. However, to eliminate wrong patterns of thought and behavior, it takes more than simply knowing why we are accepted— we must meditate on God’s truth. As we saturate our minds with His Word, the Holy Spirit will work in our subconscious to filter out erroneous thinking and develop a healthier outlook. For instance, the Scriptures tell us that believers possess the following: • Sense of Acceptance: Romans 8:15-17 says that Christians are members of the heavenly Father’s family. And God also assures us, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). • Sense of Significance: Our value does not change with

circumstances. Rather, it is based in God’s infinite and unchanging love, the proof of which is Christ’s sacrificial death on our behalf (Rom. 5:5-8). • Sense of Competence: Romans 8:11 teaches that the Holy Spirit is dwelling in us. We are unable to successfully live the Christian life on our own, but when we are obedient, the Spirit guides us and enables us to be victorious. Rely on the truth, and appropriate feelings will eventually follow. Scripture says that if you believe in Jesus Christ, you belong, you are worthwhile, and you are competent in Him. Allow these three facts to permeate your being. Jesus came down, so that we can get up and He died that we might live. Jesus said, "It's Finished," so that we could get started. Do know your worth today in Christ Jesus! By His Amazing Grace, Kennedy Young Jr | Lead Pastor East Gate Missionary Baptist Church, Dallas, Tx #buildingaChurch4aCity

Providing Prevention to a Fatal Disease – Breast Cancer Commentary by U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is upon us, and this gives us the time to remember all those who have gone through the intrusive experience of breast cancer. It is paramount that we continue to spread awareness all year to ensure that females and males across the country know the actions to take to prevent breast cancer. At the moment, besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer for women and is the leading cause of cancer death for women. Through the dedication of all our efforts, we can ensure more women are survivors. According to findings of the Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research Program, in 2017 approximately more than 250,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among U.S. women. And this year in Texas, there is to be more than 17,000 total expected new breast cancer cases, including 139 cases among males and 17,132 cases among females according to the Texas Cancer Registry.
It is vital that women both go to their doctors annually and do daily checks on their own to ensure that there are no unusual lumps, swelling, rashes or changes in shape to their breasts. Frequent checkups allow women to know their body better and provide the ability to discuss changes more accurately with their doctors. Additionally, mammograms are extremely important for women to have once their doctor recommends it, as they reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer for women between the ages of 40 to 74. Mammograms spot cancers and tumors that need to be treated, and there are many options for women to find available screenings. Women can ask their doctors for screening, and there are also some local health programs that offer mammogram screenings at little to no cost. The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides screening services, which includes clinical breast exams and mammograms to low-income, uninsured women in the United States. We must continue to support all females both in their awareness and in their treatment. Currently, it is estimated that 12.4 percent of women who are born in the United States will develop breast cancer sometime in their lives, leaving about 1 in 8 women with the lifetime risk of breast cancer. These numbers are too high. We must continue to
take precautions in our country that help women become more aware of their risks for breast cancer and help them be proactive in their health. For instance, African American women should consider receiving a breast cancer screening prior to the age 40 in order to reduce further complications or risk of fatality. Additionally, we must speak about the dangers that breast cancer holds for men in our country. Men with a family history of breast cancer, along with other factors, can cause an increased risk for breast cancer in men. Usually men with breast cancer have lumps that can be felt. Survival for men is similar to survival for women with breast cancer who are at the same stages, however, breast cancer in men is often diagnosed at later stages, decreasing the likelihood for curing the cancer. While the chances of breast cancer in men are rare, it is still important for men to be cautious of their risk and take precautionary measures against breast cancer. This October, I urge you all to push awareness of breast cancer to everyone. This is a health concern that every American needs to take seriously to ensure the health of all men and women. As we continue to teach and inform others about the risks and precautionary measures one can take, this allows us to have a community in Dallas with healthy, active, and informed people.

What A Week !!!!!!!!!!!!!! by Darryl E. Blair Sr. Well well well here we are another week of a sorrows, as well as celebration. now that we are here at Prairie View A&M University one of the greatest universities in the world, its homecoming time, This week Prairie View A&M University plays Bacone University of Oklahoma and we looked to celebrate a victory here at homecoming. the campus has changed in a positively great way, as we've added some beautiful buildings and quite certainly we've added a beautiful Stadium. I'm part of a second generation of alumni as my Father, William Blair, went to school here then my brother Jordan went to school here and now he has three children who graduated from PVU, Jordan Blair II, Harrison Blair, and Taylor Blair. I'm in the process of having one of my Twins graduate from Prairie View A&M University. In way of Carrington Johnson Blair. What a way, what a way, what a way, to celebrate a legacy. as we look into this week and reflect on what we have gone through again we are here with Trump dealing with the issues of “Trump the Tramp” and small minded issues, as he continues to wreak havoc on our country looking to divide and conquer, rather than build and divide. but more so than Trump and his ignorance we are dealing with the somber occasion of having lost two students at

The PromoChics 2nd Annual Femcees Fashion Show “Dare to Be Aware” By Arielle Johnson The PromoChics 2nd Annual Femcee Fashion Show “Dare to Be Aware” was held this past Sunday at Lofty Spaces in Dallas, Texas and it can only be described in three words, “Off the Chain,” and with the attendance, it wound up being a packed house. The music was bumping from the moment you walked through the door and the DJ had a mixture of everything. But once you took a few steps into the venue, it was the smell coming over from the soul food nachos vendor that had everyone going. He made it hard for people not to walk by the table to see what he had, then make a purchase. The first person to open the show was Nia, a very high energy rap artist. Her flow was flawless and
her moves were as well. The main people that kept the crowd going were the two very talented hosts, Kiki J and Comedian Q. They made a very nice team and kept everyone in stitches. Both emcees commented on how beautifully decorated the room was, but it was Q who said he was going to take the decorations with him. There was a raffle drawing for several gift baskets that were handed out. The last lady to re-
ceive a gift basket was called out by Q for having a big forehead, which he took back a few moments later as he tried to get her number in front of the crowd.
As a way of apologizing for saying she had a big forehead, he gave her one of the t-shirts he is promoting, which r e a d s , “Presidentless,” but held onto it with a tight grip as she reached for it. He then tried again in front of everyone to get the number again. The show was coordinated by Jchell Jones, the Director of Jones Girls Inc. Plus Sized mod-
els. A majority of the models in the show were plus sized and very skilled at modeling the fashions the were asked to display. They definitely made a lot of the oversized women in the audience proud to be carrying a few extra pounds and looking beautiful while doing it. Some of the designers who were represented were, Focus, Ashley Stewart, Angie B. and Classic Beginnings. There were definitely many fashions in the show the audience loved, as was expressed by their gasps and applause. Also, it was the models who really brought life to the fashions with their unique style of being fashionable in the fashions they wore. A portion of the proceeds raised at the 2nd Annual Femcees Fashion Show will be donated to the Bridge Breast Network.
Caught You Doing Something Good: Feeding the Community
By Arielle Johnson Over 40 million Americans receive food stamps every month, but at some point, before their SNAP card is refilled, a large percentage of recipients have to find creative ways to survive until the benefit is added to their card again. There are all
sorts of programs which literally help to fill in the gap by providing cooked meals and items from their food pantry. Without the existence of such programs, there really is no telling what SNAP recipients would do to get by. Positive Reflections Ministries provides a food pantry towards the end of every month. PRM Founder, Alice Robinson says it is towards the end of the month when things get tight for everyone. Therefore, she started her ministry to help out in this area. As a child, Mrs. Robinson recalls her family struggling to put food on the table. As a result, she has her own personal story to share with others about how it feels to eat and still be hungry because there was not enough food. PRM gives out boxes of food which include can goods, dry goods, sodas, produce and 2 to 3 types of meats. Meat is a great source of protein, but for some reason, many of the pantries within the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex fail to provide this part of the meal to people in need. PRM has been able to provide Steaks, Chicken, Ribs, Sirloins, Ground Beef and Bacon. They do their best to make sure the family is able to survive at least 2-3 days off of the box of goods they hand to them.
Last month, PRM was able to serve 377 families. In August, they provided food for 576 families. Mrs. Robinson gets the word out about her pantry through word of mouth and by conducting heavy flyer distribution in the area surrounding their food distribution center. If you are running low on groceries or know someone who is, we encourage you to stop by to get a box of food. Mrs. Robinson absolutely loves serving people and has a group of strong men as volunteers from the Raw Bones Domino Club who will help you with carrying your food if you need help. They all want you to know you don’t have to be embarrassed about needing help. Elite News is happy to give a shout out to Mrs. Robinson and congratulate her on a job well done. By the way, before closing, we want to mention Mrs. Robinson’s/PRM’s Thanksgiving Day basket giveaway. Please save the date of Saturday, Nov.
18, 2017, and show up at 1910 N. St. Augustine Rd., Dallas, TX 75217 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to claim your Thanksgiving basket.

An Evening to Honor Two Dallas Queens By Arielle Johnson
Chris Keith, Betty Culbreath and Councilman Casey Thomas Honor Mrs. Culbreath at the ceremony held at the Dallas Executive Airport
A Community Appreciation was held this past Thursday, October 19th for two of Dallas’ most beloved Queens, Betty Culbreath and Edna Pemberton. The event was held at the Dallas Executive Airport at 6:30 p.m. in a room that was already filled to capacity when the program started, leaving latecomers standing wherever they could find a place to stand. Bishop Omar Jahwar from Kingdom War and the Urban Specialists opened up the program with a prayer. Immediately after prayer, people began to walk up to the podium one-byone to share their fondest memories of the
two honorees. Let’s just say, if words were flowers, they would have been stacked from the floor to the ceiling leaving the room smelling like a mixture of sweet, exotic fragrances for many days afterwards. Councilman Atkins was one of the first to remind everyone of how Edna Pemberton, or Mrs. P, as she has been affectionately known, would introduce herself to folks in the neighborhood. “Hi, I’m Edna Pemberton and I’m for the community and the Black people.” Unfortunately, due to his commitment to attend a separate event, Councilman Atkins left shortly after speaking, but before he left he said, “Look...I couldn’t miss this at all. Those other people will just have to wait for me to get there.” Councilman Casey Thomas presented the two honorees, Mrs. Culbreath and Mrs. P. with flowers and two uniquely shaped awards with the following inscription: ‘Lifetime Achievement Award.’ Councilman Thomas said, “These two awards are beautiful and unique, which describes both of tonight’s honorees.” The previous day, he was responsible for giving both women a Proclamation from the City of Dallas. Betty Culbreath was described as being a woman of enormous stature who helped pioneer the way for many of today’s leaders. In her time, she was simply the first at many things here in Dallas which was definitely an inspiration to both Black men and women. Every time something happened

He guided the character through the positions of butler, state budget director, and finally Lieutenant Governor, a transformation that is rarely seen in characters on television today. Raised in St. Louis by his maternal grandmother, Jeannette, Guillaume interrupted his education with a stint in the United States Army. When you’re in public service, you have to be honest first. You can’t be in it for the money. I carefully chose my path to make a difference for my people.” These were the words Mrs. Culbreath shared with the audience after so many people had spoken. Mrs. P spoke shortly after Mrs. Culbreath and briefly stated, “I’m a widow and an orphan. This means so much to me.” “My mother was the 9th born child, born to her mother in Chicago. In her life, she has raised 13 nieces and nephews. You all have only been able to see a third of her genuine caring,” said Ms. P’s daughter. Sandra Jackson, a candidate for Judge was one of the last to drop flowers in the form of words at Mrs. P’s feet. She said, “Many years ago, Ms. P said to me, “You’re supposed to go somewhere, and I’m gonna get you there.” As Ms. Jackson looked in Ms. P’s direction she said, “Nobody can do it the way you’ve done it, you are a champion for the community.” “Back in the day, Mrs. Culbreath and Ms. P were like gladiators,” said Esther Davis, a journalist. Ms. Davis was once threatened with cancellation of one of her shows on two television networks, but all of that was resolved with a phone call she made to Ms. P. It feels good to come out and show your support of the people you love. And when there’s standing room only at the venue, that’s a whole lotta Love.

THE INTERVIEW
Meet Urban Farmer Jerry Ra By Arielle Johnson
Urban farming is what brought him to Dallas from Columbus, Ohio. The milder climate we experience here was also promising to Mr. Jerry Ra, the Founder and President of The Urban Green University, as he had grown tired of the snow. As he traveled along Interstate 20 in Dallas, he was brimming with excitement as he traveled into towns along the way observing what appeared to be a ton of Mom and Pop shops. Jerry Robinson Jr. or, Jerry Ra as he is known in the local urban farming community, is our current Urban Farming Superstar. While double Majored in Soil/Crop Science and Horticulture in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences, at Ohio State University, his revolutionary agrarian spirit was completely ignited when he met Will Allen. Mr. Ra completed a certification course in Commercial Urban Agriculture (CUA) at Growing Power in Milwaukee, WI in 2012. Prior to taking the course, he struggled with the lectures his professors delivered in the classroom setting and was losing confidence in himself, because the ideas seemed so abstract. Mr. Ra soon became fully immersed and dedicated to the Growing Power program, and be-
gan his very own movement of developing urban food infrastructure systems in across the country. As a result classes at the University started to make a lot more sense and he started to reap the full benefit of the higher education he was pursuing. With 15 years of experience in urban farming, Mr. Ra has partnered with several social service organizations, one of which is Zan Wesley Homes Jr. Community Outreach Center, to combat food deserts, un-
employment, and the lack of economic development within the urban community. What Mr. Ra is most proud of to date, is his involvement in helping to unify nine different Church denominations here in the Dallas area. Those churches got together to tackle Food Deserts by implementing a project he calls the Urban Green Gateway Corridor Project (UGGCP). UGGCP is the development of Cedar Crest Boulevard into a local food
system, eroding food deserts and health and income disparities. ZWHJCOC is in the process of developing the St. Luke Square project covering three zip codes in South Dallas. Mr. Ra’s role is to implement a 5 city block Urban Farm Hub. He is very passionate about utilizing agriculture to increase central city economy. Mr. Ra’s passion is what led him to create, The Urban Green University, which is an agricultural development and training program. He thoroughly understands
that a systematic and strategic process, he calls Food Apartheid, was put in place to create the food deserts. Therefore, like the ANT we must COOPERATE in a systematic way to eliminate these deserts. Cooperative gardens use fish therefore all of the systems he has been instrumental in creating are growing fish in addition to produce. In his use of hard to find fish in these aquaponic/hydroponic systems, he is able to give farmers a return on their investment as they sell fish to him that they don’t need, which he sells to local restaurants. don’t have it on their menu regularly. People are looking for self-sustaining systems, and have the ability to break even, in terms of their initial investment in approximately 3 months. If you are interested in setting up a farming system, it takes about $300$750 to get started. The different in pricing is related to how actively involved you are in the process of setting up the system. If need be, there are skilled farmers available who can assist with set-up. In the coming week, Mr. Ra will be introducing stories to us to help us understand more about the Urban gardening movement. One which he says took off in his hometown nine years ago.
