down into the pie pan, and up along the sides. • Set the formed crust into the refrigerator to harden up the butter that was used in it. (Only a few minutes.) This is the perfect time to start on the filling. • In a large mixing bowl, pour in the eggnog and vanilla pudding mixes. Start mixing on low for about 1 minute. Sprinkle in the cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix on high speed for about another minute to 3 minutes. It will begin to thicken up. • Get out your pie crust from the refrigerator and pour in the creamy eggnog mixture. Spread around to the edges. Cover with 8 ounces of whipped cream. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon. • Set back into the refrigerator until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Full-Figured Women Are Rejoicing About Curvy Fox THE INTERVIEW By Arielle Johnson By Arielle Johnson We recently discovered a wonderful brand of clothing for today’s plus sized woman. Well... really, the clothing is for women of all sizes, Christina Howell but special attention has has been given to this forgotten segment of our population. The name of the brand is Curvy Fox and it is the perfect name for this clothing line. As the designer told us, she wanted to create a name that oozes excitement and invites the women who invest in her fashions to add a little pizazz to their lives with new look that is versatile and professional.
fabrics and being a supplier. She officially launched Curvy Fox in October 2016 and has decided to have all of her items manufactured here in Dallas. And although Dallas is a far cry from NYC and LA when it comes to fashion, Ms. Howell is determined to establish her brand here in our area, in spite of friends and family encouraging her to spread her wings and fly either to the East or West. The closest she has come to compromising with loved ones is by agreeing to do a photoshoot of her upcoming line of clothing in Los Angeles. As Ms. Howell puts it, Dallas already has everything she needs in a location, but she has figured it would not hurt to give sunny California a try.
This method provides a no pressure, warm introduction of her product to potential clients with no long term obligations. But then there are some retailers who have made room for her brand on their racks and are begging for more. Presently, she has such agreements with retailers in Detroit and Trinidad.
We are proud to present to you, fashion designer Christina Howell, the creative talent and brain behind this awesome brand. Generally, new small business owners are expected to be involved with every facet of their business, but when we say Ms. Howell is involved with every single step from creation to delivery of product, we mean this in a literal sense. Ms. Howell spent two years taking fashion courses to gain more knowledge about the manufacturing process,
to display her brand, and connect with shoppers.
Ms. Howell markets her brand in a number of ways, but one of the creative ways in which she is gaining a group of new loyal followers is by providing one day pop-ups at various boutiques in and around the DFW metroplex. She says some retailers are reluctant to carry plus-sized clothing, but are open to having her come out
Ms. Howell definitely has her hands full with her new baby, Curvy Fox, but in addition to managing her own clothing line, she is also holding down a full-time job and being a mother to her real live pride and joy, her 7-year old son, Brayden. By no means, is Brayden your average lad, as he has already told his mom, he hopes to one day own a restaurant that will only serve breakfast.
When his mom asked him to elaborate, he said he is only interested in opening his establishment during breakfast hours, so he can keep his afternoons and evenings free for leisure time. Until then, like mom, he is promoting the brand at every opportunity and letting women at supermarkets and other places he travels to with his mom to check out their website, CurvyFox.com By the way, we would love for you to browse the site as well. Ms. Howell is making curvy women all over the metroplex and abroad, proud to know they have got a place where they go to get clothing that makes them feel empowered when they step forward in their bold, rule defying fashions, accentuating their curves tastefully. Curvy Fox is located at curvyfox. com and has a facebook page which goes by the same name. Please be sure to stop by and pay them a visit. ELITE NEWS DECEMBER 1, 2017

The Official Launch of the MLK Freedom Garden and Seedling Farm By Arielle Johnson
We don’t know how the organizers of the MLK Freedom Garden and Seedling Farm launch knew the Tuesday before Thanksgiving would be the perfect day to officially introduce the Seedling Farm to the public, but a more perfect day was beyond imagination. Surprisingly, for this time of the year in Dallas, the temperature was perfect at approximately 65 degrees and the sun was bright and warm as it danced on the faces of the guests seated directly across from the awning covered podium and microphone strategically placed directly in front of the MLK Greenhouse. Approximately 70 people were in attendance, many of whom were representatives of various community gardens within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Alicia Webbie, the Director of MLK Social Services was the program Mistress of Ceremonies and provided the guests with a warm welcome before passing the microphone to Vernesta Hayward, the Advisory Board Vice-Chair who guided us all into prayer. With a bowed head, Ms. Hayward recited a special bible verse. “I give you a commandment, that you would love one another,” then said she was thankful for the MLK forefathers, think tanks and the MLK vision. District 7 Councilman Kevin Felder addressed the crowd stating, “plants allow things to grow and multiply and feed the community.” He was beaming with pride as he stated he wants the very up and coming South Dallas to become a top destination/location for visitors. “One plants, one waters, but God

gives the increase,” stated Richard Miles, Founder of Miles of Freedom. Mr. Miles provided the brief story behind why there is a MLK Freedom garden. In 2016, the Miles of Freedom Board of Directors decided it would be a great idea to symbolize the growth of their clients and the organization, by planting a tree each time a group of their students completed their workshop. Mr. Miles was introduced to Dr. Owen Lynch of SMU the same year, when he presented him with the idea of a new vision for food and security – how about engaging the community while feeding them? The MLK Seedling Farm is managed by expert Horticulturist Tyrone Day, who was on hand to give a very heartfelt speech about the job he loves. Mr. Day said farming at the MLK Farm has helped him fulfill one of his aspirations for the 2nd part of his life. He mentioned he has seen a lot of community involvement and progress in South Dallas in the past 5 years and is always excited to expose children and young people to the idea of growing their own food.
Mr. Day wants the youth, seniors and adults in the community to know they are there for them and to beautify and feed the community. They are there to let all of Dallas know, as Mr. Day puts it, “We ain’t creating thugs, we planting plugs.” Mr. Day is a product of the Miles of Freedom program which helps formerly incarcerated men and women gain the skills they need to support themselves in today’s economy. In Mr. Day’s case, and Mr. Miles, the founder of Miles of Freedom, they were both wrongfully accused and convicted for a crimes they never committed. And as Mr. Owen Lynch expressed, “They lost their youth and they could have been mad about it, but instead, they decided they wanted to help others.” This day would not have been possible without the contributions of a number of different individuals and organizations - Brad Boa, the Hunt Institute, Big Tex Urban Farms, De. Vincent Martin, SMU and Wells Fargo, just to name a few.
Even Tre Mendez, who is a visual artist, has gotten involved with the spirit of giving by donating a painting of Martin Luther King to the MLK Freedom Garden and Seedling Farm. The Martin Luther King Center Director, Pamela Jones, was one of the last people in the program to address the attendees stating, “We conceived this idea, believed it could be done and achieved it. Health, education and employment were all a part of Martin Luther King’s dream.” Immediately following the program we briefly interviewed Ms. Jones and asked her how the community is responding to the garden. She told us the community knows the potential it possesses and everyday people are already enjoying the changes. The Seedling Farm mission is indeed a simple one - Each one, teach one to seed one.
The South Dallas Cultural Center Why You Need to Make It a Destination By Arielle Johnson It is hard to believe the South Dallas Cultural Center has been open for more than 20 years, and throughout this time period, has remained true to its main purpose, which is to enrich the lives of young African-American children by connecting them their history. There are many ways in which this objective can be reached, however, teaching through the use of the performing arts and fine arts, takes our history of pain and oppression during slavery and beyond, and molds it into positive lessons filled with many of the conversations which never take place in a public school setting. Over a period of time, these lessons help to further strengthen our children’s awareness of their own resilience. Two months ago, John Spriggins, joined the South Dallas Cultural Center as manager, and has been working on reviving some of the artistic programs that were once taught at the Center. At one time the Center could have very well created the next Spike Lee or Jimmy Jam and Terry
Lewis; they certainly have the space and equipment. Therefore careful thought and
are re-tellings of common fairy tales and nursery rhymes with an urban/r&b twist, one of which is an interpretation of of “Little Red Riding Hood” which is called “Little Red Rides the Hood.” Opening day starts on Thursday, November 30 and runs through December 10. These tales will be presented by Soul Rep Theatre, the SDCC’s resident theater group.
planning is being put into reestablishing these programs to create additional outlets for the community the Center serves. When speaking with Mr. Spriggins a few days ago he told us, “The focus in our schools has been on testing, and as a result the arts have been marginalized. In some cases, the arts have been completely removed from schools. Research proves however, that these programs are necessary, as they foster vision and imagination.” If you have not been to the South Dallas Cultural Center, now is the perfect time to go and catch a theater performance. Currently, they have a theater production running called, “Re-tales - The Flyest Fairy Tales.” These
And if for some reason, you do not have an opportunity to take in a theater performance, remember, SDCC is a cultural center, so there is literally a ton of artwork and sculptures up and down the hallways and on the walls to feast your eyes upon. One of the most striking images we found on the walls in the hallways was a collage timeline which spans from 1930 - 2007. It is a collage of real photos of some of the most prominent people in our Dallas Black History during these time periods. Make plans to go with your family and see if you can identify some of the people in the pictures without looking them up on your cellphone. Right now, through December 15, you will be able to enjoy the Journey Mercies the Master of Fine Arts Exhibition in the Arthello Beck Gallery. The exhibition is by Spencer Evans from the University of Texas at Arlington, and it consists mostly of big colorful murals, but it also includes one bronze bust of an African-American male. Saturdays at the South Dallas Cultural Center are a very special time for our children starting from 9:30 a.m. Some of the activities offered include Capoeira (Brazilian Martial Arts), African-American Storytelling, Vocal and Instrumental music, acting classes and even gardening. The best part about all of these activities,
which have been coordinated by Education and Outreach Coordinator Marilyn Clark is that they are free thanks to the availability of City of Dallas grants. Mr. Spriggins has a Masters in Humanities and has taught college level literature, theater arts and film for several years. At one time, he served as the Gallery Director for Richland Community College, seeking out exhibitions of interest using them as a teaching gallery. Please make it a point to reconnect with your neighborhood theater. As Mr. Spriggins says, “If you want to have a theater experience, you shouldn’t have to travel to Bishop Arts or Deep Ellum. You should be able to experience theater in South Dallas.” Come and discover what the South Dallas Cultural Center has to offer you and your family. They are located at 3400 S. Fitzhugh Ave, Dallas, TX 75210. Their phone number is 214-939-2787. ELITE NEWS DECEMBER 1, 2017

Mrs. Catherine Palmer Celebrating 100th birthday
Mrs. Catherine Palmer was born December 7, 1917 to the late Leslie and Katie B. Johnson, and is the second of seven siblings (only one sibling remaining). She was married to the late Oliver Palmer, Sr. for 41 years. Combined, they had 12 children - eight daughters and four sons – (of whom two daughters are deceased), 30+ grandchildren, and too many great-grandchildren (plus) to count – currently at five generations. She was born and raised in Pittsburg, Texas, where she continues to claim residence. She received her education at the Center Point Preparatory School.
Blast From the Past
Mrs. Palmer is a natural born historian and ranks among the best of orators. She is an accomplished “self-taught” seamstress and loves to sew. Her hobbies include arts and crafts, quilting, writing and reading, and gardening. She’s quite the socialite, and a person who never meets strangers. She is still able to provide family historical information for the younger generations. Mrs. Palmer is well-known and respected in her community and surrounding areas. Her quick wit and keen sense of humor draws people from all walks of life.

founded the Silver Sister’s Club in her local community area of Pittsburg, Texas, where she lived. Until late last year, she maintained her independence by driving herself to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores, etc. She’s been interviewed by various entities for historical information to be stored at college libraries. She was interviewed pre and post presidential election of our past President, Barak Obama, by the Dallas Morning News, who published before and after articles. Mrs. Palmer has been a member of the Antioch Baptist Church since childhood, serving numerous positions: Church Secretary for 26 years; Foundation Choir Secretary; Deaconess; President of the Home Mission Society; and District Board Secretary. Until her health failed her, she willingly served on God’s program any time she was called upon. She continues that service today by offering encouraging and comforting words to those she encounters. Her goal is “to make somebody’s day brighter”. Her favorite scripture is Proverbs 3:5-6, and her favorite song is “Just A Rose Will Do”.

What is the City of Cleveland, Ohio and the State Florida up to? How are their black leaders different than black leaders in Dallas, Texas ? On November 28, 2017, Morgan Stanley, National Urban League Urban Empowerment Fund (NULUEF), National Development Council (NDC), and the Urban League of Broward County (ULBC) will launch a historic initiative to provide minority owned businesses in Florida with greater access to capital through the Capital Access Fund (CAF) – a lending initiative which provides access to capital and business education for minority entrepreneurs. Through the partnership, CAF and the ULBC’s Entrepreneurship Center will expand its efforts to promote sustainability, create jobs and build community wealth in Florida. “Minority-owned businesses are the fastest growing segment of small businesses in this coun-
try and yet they face many challenges access to capital being one of them. The National Urban League will expand the national partnership with Morgan Stanley and The National Development Council by bringing The Capital Access Fund to Florida,” said Marc H. I am excited about the expansion of the Capital Access Fund into Florida as it takes it one step closer to becoming one such solution,” said Don Bowen, president and CEO, National Urban League’s Urban Empowerment Fund.
CAF launched in Cleveland in December 2016 as a three-year, $8 million program that provides minority business owners with access to capital as well as pre and post-loan counseling to ensure the success of its borrowers. With a goal to create or maintain 300 jobs within three years, to date, CAF has provided 16 loans totaling $2.5 million which will create over 158 jobs and retain over 197 jobs in the Greater Cleveland community. The CAF partners are excited and look forward to a successful expansion to Florida.
