Guest Column: Renewable Energy's Taxpayer-funded Honeypot Turning Back Renewable Energy’s Taxpayer-Funded Honeypot By Merrill Matthews
The renewable energy industry exists because of government mandates and taxpayer subsidies. Mega-investor Warren Buffet echoed this statement in his explanation of why his company, Berkshire Hathaway, invests in wind energy: For example, on wind energy, we get a tax credit if we build a lot of wind farms.
That’s the only reason to build them. They don’t make sense without the tax credit. Notice Buffet didn’t say the taxpayer subsidies are a “good” reason for investing in wind farms, but “the only” reason. The Financial Times notes, “Berkshire’s Energy unit also receives tax credits for renewable power generation - reporting $258 [million] of wind energy tax credits in 2014, and $913 [million] of investment tax credits in 2012 and 2013 for opening new solar power plants.” U.S. taxpayers shelled out at least $1.17 billion in tax breaks for billionaire Buffet in just three years. The House Republican tax reform plan begins clawing back some of those subsidies, including the one receiving the most attention -- the per-vehicle tax credit of up to $7,500 for electric cars. Defenders of the credit warn
that eliminating it will likely mean the end of U.S. plug-in electric vehicle sales. They also note that eliminating the credit makes it harder for some states to follow a mandate requiring electric vehicles to comprise a certain percentage of car sales. But the tax credit was supposed to be temporary, to offset high R&D and start-up costs and promote early sales, until the electric vehicle market got on its feet. Besides, the primary users of that credit are high earners who can afford electric vehicles, most of which are significantly more expensive than cars and trucks with fossil fuel-burning engines. That means that middle-class workers are subsidizing high-income workers’ driving preferences. The wind industry also takes a hit in the House tax bill by reducing the Production Tax Credit from 2.4 cents per-kilowatt hour to 1.5 cents for new projects. And
solar energy loses a 30 percent Investment Tax Credit -- which under current law is scheduled to drop to 10 percent -- for large solar projects beginning construction after 2027. News reports also assert that the House Republicans’ tax reform proposal maintains tax breaks for the oil and gas industry. And the Congressional Budget Office does claim that the U.S. provided about $18.4 billion in subsidies and tax breaks to the fossil fuel and renewable energy industries in 2016, with 75 percent going to renewable fuels and 25 percent to fossil fuels. But that claim is misleading. The International Energy Agency does not include the U.S. among countries that subsidize fossil fuels. Neither does the Financial Times energy subsidy assessment, though the Financial Times does claim the U.S. is the second largest subsidizer of renewable energy after Germany.
So what gives? Tax breaks for fossil fuels are generally applied to standard operating expenses such as exploration and depletion costs. Those are costs of doing business in the oil and gas industry and should be normal business write-offs. Scaling back or ending renewable energy and electric vehicle tax breaks, as the House Republican plan does, would come closer to putting renewable energy on a level playing field with fossil fuels, while saving the government money. Washington has been picking winners and losers all too often. Companies need to compete without taxpayer subsidies, letting consumers determine which companies --and industries --thrive and which don’t survive.

Community Policing
ELITE NEWS
By Raashid Brown
Raashid Brown
Police departments across the nation are embracing and developing a policing philosophy that is changing how police officers do their jobs and interact with communities. This philosophy is having significant impact in our communities and is making great advances in bridging the gap between law enforcement and their communities. On December 18, 2014, President Obama issued an executive order forming a task force to examine the gap between law enforcement and the communities they serve. This task force would recommend how to heal and restore trust. After 90 days of interviews and research, the task force produced an action plan that is supported by six pillars. The one I will address today is pillar four: Community Policing. Community policing is simply collaboration between police departments and the communities they serve in a joint effort to reduce
crime and maintain public safety. Community policing addresses the fact that police departments alone cannot reduce or solve crime. In order to increase public safety, law enforcement agencies, communities and the criminal justice system MUST work together as a team. This form of policing is unique and is different from traditional policing we have all experienced. Traditional policing has been partially reactionary. Officers patrolled their assigned “beat” and, when the situation dictated, they responded to a call and handled it accordingly. The emphasis was on protecting citizens from potential crimes. Although this form of policing has

served us for decades and is still necessary, this approach cannot be used in isolation. It isn’t the most
While traditional policing may still be valid, recent experience has necessitated other more innovative
and proactive approaches. Police departments alone cannot fight crime and produce public safety. Responsibility is now being jointly accepted by many communities. Crime has become a focus of neighborhoods, not just the police department. The difference between traditional policing and community policing is not solely in actions taken. It is also about the cooperation and teamwork required for success— the mindset that police and communities must work together! As a police officer whose primary responsibility is to serve as liaison between the community and the police department, I can confidently attest that community policing works if it is done cooperatively and consistently. When I accepted the job to serve as a neighborhood police officer, I was assigned to an area where crime was rising. Had I taken a traditional mindset

community policing approach and started engaging with those who actually lived in the community. I formed crime watch meetings for apartment complexes, attended homeowner association meetings,
porches drinking tea while talking with neighbors. I also invited businesses and restaurants to join the conversation in crime watch meetings. After a few months, community
members and businesses in the area noticed a reduction in crime. Citizens and business owners began taking control of their part of the community and encouraged others to get involved. For too long, police departments have been reactionary in communities, responding to incidents. Community policing allows officers to proactively touch a community regularly through posi-
tive, engaging, and creative contact with citizens. Community policing works—but it requires that police and communities work closely together. We are better together! Have a topic that you would like to have an officer discuss in detail, write me at: admin@RaashidBrown.com.

An Open Letter from Marvin Earle Banking Summit for Southern Dallas Texas --Will it Happen?
Marvin Earle
TRUMP wants to shatter everything "Obama" did for the people! Al Franken was a huge vocal supporter of CFPB..... Barney Frank, author of the law in 2010 is gone due to sexual allegation's... if you cant kill the message.. you kill the messenger. President Trump named Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney as the CFPB's interim director. The back-to-back moves set up a clash over who is in charge of the bureau. In a tweet Friday night, Senator Elizabeth Warren, an architect of the consumer agency, said that under the Dodd-Frank financial reform law, the agency's deputy director assumes the role of acting director if there's a vacancy. Mulvaney, like many Republicans, has been a staunch critic of the CFPB. While serving in Congress, he voted in favor of killing the agency. He and other opponents argue the agency -- which was created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis to keep an eye on Wall Street -- has too much power and installs unduly harsh regulations. if TRUMP get his way.. he will be re-elected..
Mulvaney has worked alongside Trump to roll back some of the rules they have pinned as anti-business. And some Republicans have called for Cordray to be fired -- a move that would have proved troublesome for Trump since law forbids him from firing the CFPB director without cause. The CFPB's proponents, however, say the agency plays a key role in preventing big business from preying on the little guy. There are a number of reasons Dallas needs a vibrant urban league and Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce. One day a leader will call for such a summit and lock arms together with all black leaders to bring Black Wall street and the benefits of such BACK TO DALLAS. Banks are subject to rules and regulations.. (1.) if you don't know the rules you loose..(2.) if you don't care about the rules you loose.. (3.) if you are sold out.. you loose.. why are Dallas Texas black politician's quite on this subject? WHEN HAS THE Texas state leaders, Dallas county leaders and federal black Politian's given a report card, event, seminar, meeting.... of the success of minority contacting initiatives, growth and development impacting black business in this region called north Texas? Has the local Democrats of Dallas County leadership addressed this issue? Democrats address every issue but, banking, access to cash and lending that impact southern Dallas county. Just make the county BLUE Negros!!!..... Johnson County is offering tax abatement's for the building and fixtures that will go up on 250-plus acres. wireless carriers in the U.S. to agree to a settlement with the government over millions of dollars in unauthorized cellphone charges. Sprint has agreed to pay customers up to $68 million in relief over billing practices known as “cramming,” and Verizon Wireless will pay $90 million. Late last year, AT&T and T-Mobile settled similar cases with the government, agreeing to pay $105 million and $90 million, respectively. In all four cases, the carriers are accused of letting companies charge consumers tens of millions of dollars for services such as ringtones or horoscopes that the consumers had not requested. Generally, the carriers profited from these premium SMS services by keeping 40 percent of the revenue. TRUMP IS AT WAR WITH Today’s settlements were announced in a release distributed by New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman
