Congresswoman Johnson’s floor remarks in support of Brownfields Program

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson delivered remarks on the House Floor today in support of H.R. 3017, the Brownfields Enhancement, Economic, Redevelopment and Reauthorization of 2017. A transcript of her speech can be found below: “Mr. Speaker, the Brownfields program has been a notable success in our nation’s history. The Brownfields program has helped to transform and cleanup countless abandoned, idled, or potentially-contaminated commercial and industrial sites all across the United States. These once blighted areas within our communities are now valuable tracts of land thanks to the Brownfields program. As a Congresswoman from North Texas, I have seen firsthand the benefits that Brownfields redevelopment can bring to a community. A 72-acre site in my district, formerly known as Victory Park, was transformed by the Brownfields program from an industrial wasteland populated by an old paint factory

and meatpacking plant. Since then – and thanks in large part to the Brownfields Program – that same plot is now home to the American Airlines Center and other retail and commercial space. This is just one example in my Congressional district and across the country of how successful we can be in converting depressed, decaying areas into vibrant economic and cultural centers that can increase employment and productivity in the region. That is why I stand together with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support H.R. 3017. This bill will take the important step to reauthorize the Brownfields program through 2022. While the bill represents a flat reauthorization, it makes crucial changes to the program that will improve the way states, cities, counties, and other stakeholders are able to utilize Brownfields sites. It is time that we continue the rich tradition driving this program and reauthorize the Brownfields program without further hesitation. Thank you, I yield back.”

Hamilton Park Community dedicates new signs for Dr. Robert E. Price Post Office Building On Sunday, December 3rd, the community of Hamilton Park in Northeast Dallas dedicated new wayfinding signs for the Dr. Robert E. Price Post Office building at the corner of Forest Lane and Schroeder Road. The dedication will took place following church services at New Mount Zion Baptist Church and Hamilton Park United Methodist Church. As a one of the original homeowners of the Hamilton Park Community, an intentionally planned middleclass, African-American neighborhood established in 1954, Dr. Price served over 44 years as Pastor of New Mount Zion Baptist

Church until his passing in 2012. His legacy of service and leadership continues to inspire this community to get involved and give back; it takes a village. In 2006, U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions entered House Resolution 4246 to designate the United States Postal Service building at 8135 Forest Lane in Dallas, Texas as the “Dr. Robert E. Price Post Office Building” to honor his legacy as a founding and contributing member of the Hamilton Park Community. However, the resulting sign inside and at the corner of the Post Office lacked the prominence deserved for true designation and honor of Pastor Price.

When the Hamilton Park Community received the Texas Historical Commission’s Undertold Historical Marker Funds for an Official Texas Historical Marker in May 2017, the City of Dallas was eager to honor the community with three wayfinding signs for the Dr. Robert E. Price Post Office Building. “The existing signage is simply insufficient,” McGough states. “I am thankful for the opportunity to more appropriately recognize Pastor Price, his family and this Hamilton Park community who mean so much to our city”.

An Open Letter from Marvin Earle Only One Bank Cited a Loan It Made Of the 16 banks that were contacted by ABC News and asked how they were spending the hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars, only one bank pointed to a specific loan that it made with Telecommunications giant Verizon Communications That was a $17 billion loan that Morgan Stanley made to Verizon Wireless. Morgan Stanley, which received $10 billion from TARP, released its quarterly finances today. The bank announced a dramatic and larger-than-predicted $2.37 billion quarterly loss but an overall year-end profit of $1.59 billion. That was down 49 percent from last year. The bank's stock price dropped 72 percent this year. In response to an ABC News email request, Morgan Stanley public information officer Mark Lake confirmed that bonuses are down "approximately 50 percent." Besides the Verizon loan cited by Morgan Stanley, the banks declined to detail how they were using the federal funds. (CFPB) QUESTIONS HOW IT IS BEING USED.... "Tarp money doesn't go into bonuses," Lake said, in an email to ABC News. Fact: Verizon will pay $20 million and provide significant equitable relief to resolve a nationwide class disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commis-

sion (EEOC), the agency announced today. The suit, filed against 24 named subsidiaries of Verizon Communications, said the company unlawfully denied reasonable accommodations to hundreds of employees and disciplined and/or fired them pursuant to Verizon’s “no fault” attendance plans. The EEOC filed suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Civil Action No. 1-11-cv-01832-JKB, after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process. The EEOC filed its lawsuit and the proposed consent decree resolving the suit on the same day. The consent decree resolves the EEOC’s lawsuit, an EEOC Commissioner charge, a charge filed by the Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO, and over 40 individual charges filed with the EEOC. The investigation involved coordinated systemic efforts by EEOC’s Baltimore Field Office and Newark Area Office. “This settlement demonstrates the need for employers to have attendance policies which take into account the need for paid or unpaid leave as a reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities,” said Spencer H. Lewis, Jr., Director of the EEOC’s Philadelphia District Office, which oversees Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and parts of New Jersey and Ohio. The consent decree settling the suit, which is pending judicial approval, represents the largest disability discrimination settlement in a single lawsuit in EEOC history. The EEOC charged that Verizon violated the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) by refusing to make exceptions to its

“no fault” attendance plans to accommodate employees with disabilities. Under the challenged attendance plans, if an employee accumulated a designated number of “chargeable absences,” Verizon placed the employee on a disciplinary step which could ultimately result in more serious disciplinary consequences, including termination. Fact: Morgan Stanley, which received $10 billion from TARP, released its quarterly finances today. The bank announced a dramatic and larger-than-predicted $2.37 billion quarterly loss but an overall year-end profit of $1.59 billion. That was down 49 percent from last year. The bank's stock price dropped 72 percent this year. Wells Fargo (which operate in Texas) said that of the $25 billion it received, it "cannot provide any forward-looking guidance on lending for this quarter [and] Intend[s] to use the Capital Purchase Program funds to make more loans to credit-worthy customers." More typical was the generic response by the Bank of New York Mellon, ( which operates in Texas) which said of the fortune it had banked in public moneys: "Using the $3 billion to provide liquidity to the credit markets." Congress and fiscal watchdogs have been frustrated and upset that the banks do not have to account for the way they are spending these publicly financed bonanzas. The U.S. Treasury has spent or committed $335 billion of the $700 billion in the TARP fund in an attempt to get banks back in the lending business and to unfreeze the nation's credit markets.

TEXAS STATE REP. JOHNSON TO SEEK REELECTION Texas State Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) officially filed for reelection to represent District 100 in the Texas House of Representatives today. He was first elected to represent District 100 in 2010. Representative Johnson is the co-chairman of the Dallas Area Legislative Delegation. He has nearly $350,000 in cash on hand and has an aggressive fundraising schedule planned for 2018, including a fundraiser in New York City in late January 2018. “It is one of the greatest honors of my life to represent the community in which I was born and raised. I plan to continue fighting for the hard-working people of District 100 in the 86th Texas Legislature, and I am prepared to dispense with any challengers who would stand in the way of my doing that,” said Johnson. Representative Johnson will also be consulting with his family and advisers in the coming weeks regarding whether or not he will run for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives during the 86th Texas Legislature. Representative Johnson plans to announce his decision regarding running for Speaker in early 2018. “Texas needs leaders who will represent all of the people, not just one political party’s primary voters. Single party rule has proven to be as disastrous in Texas as it is in Washington. If I decide to run for Speaker, it will be to change that,” stated Johnson. Representative Johnson currently serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, House Investments and Financial Services Committee, House Select Committee on State and Federal Power and Responsibility, and is the Vice Chair of the House Redistricting Committee.

Due Process: “Innocent Until Proven Guilty” By Larue

“No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” Although when it comes to cases like the ones that have crowded our news recently, it’s frowned upon to not immediately take the side of the accusers. I feel like many truly need the reminder of the aforementioned quote. As an honest man in 2017, heading in to 2018, it is frightening that only an accusation of wrongdoing, at the interpretation of one party involved a Nation of Men.” in an alleged incident has the What did Jesus mean when potential to ruin someone’s he said, "Judge not, and you life and reputation without the will not be judged"? It is also a make, which is why we have favorite stone thrown by those due process in faith and in day outside the church to accuse to day life in this place where Christians of hypocrisy. we are a, “Nation of Laws, not He is calling us to refrain

from condemning people, and to not pass final judgment and declare them irretrievably guilty. This is an incredibly important idea if you understand the context in which Jesus was speaking. Judgment causes us to see the other not as a person, but as a thing-as less human and therefore less valuable. Once we do that to a person,

or a group of people, it opens the door to all kinds of segregation, injustice, and abuse. Deuteronomy 19:15 reads, “A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established. This is only speaking of the charge not even the conviction, which is further evidence that we must not prematurely take sides on any given subject. Once it becomes common practice that only the mention of alleged wrongdoing is enough for condemnation, we open the floodgates to many false accusations with criminal and malicious intent at the expense of the lives of many good people. In addition, please understand, I am definitely not saying the accuser is not to be believed, but it is imperative to look and listen to both sides and all evidence before judgement is made!

Christmas is one of the happiest holidays

By Rev. Kennedy Young

During this season, people often are more generous. Families gather to help neighbors; donations are made to people in need. The practice of giving is not a recent innovation—it began on the first Christmas when Jesus was born. Everyone in the story had something to give. • When Mary submitted to God’s plan, she gave her body to be the first home of the incarnated Savior (Luke 1:30-38). Not only that, she surrendered her good reputation to fulfill the Lord’s calling for her life. • Joseph offered his love and protection to Mary and the child who was not his own (Matt 1:18-25).

At first glance, these gifts may seem to pertain only to the first Christmas, but they each have application for us today. Believers are called to give of themselves to the Lord and to one another in similar ways.

How Latinos are dealing with air pollution after Hurricane Harvey Latino communities in Houston were among the hardest hit by the millions of pounds of pollution released as a result of Hurricane Harvey and its impacts. A new video from Mi Familia Vota and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Action shares stories of a frontline community dealing with air pollution after Harvey, and on a regular basis as a result of living near the city’s industrial facilities. These voices are especially relevant as Congress prepares to make big decisions regarding funding of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the coming weeks. EPA plays an important role

protecting the health of communities after disasters, and monitoring and reducing air pollution. If President Trump’s proposed 30% cuts to EPA come to pass, it will mean more Latino families at risk. This happened in Houston but it can happen in any of our communities. Congress will make a decision in the coming days on the EPA budget. We ask that you please share this video with your friends and family to oppose any EPA budget cuts. In addition, help share the message on social media by posting on Facebook and Twitter.

GILLIARD AND JACKSON ENTER 2017 SWAC HALL OF FAME HOUSTON – Two of Prairie View A&M’s greats, Clifton Gilliard and Patricia Jackson, were a part of the class of 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Thursday night. The nine-member class included Alcorn State's James Williams and Roynell Young, Alabama State's Shameka Jackson, Mississippi Valley State's William Brown (posthumous), Texas Southern's Dr. Dwalah Fisher, Southern's Dr. David Ponton, Jr., and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 's Wallace Francis. Gilliard was inducted in the PVAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1994, and was also inducted with the 1958 championship team in 2015. Gilliard was a three-year football letterman and earned AllSWAC honors playing halfback on the third HBCU national

championship team in school history under legendary coach William 'Billy' Nicks. Gilliard's impact on Prairie View A&M was felt in athletics as well as academics. Gilliard served The Hill as head men's cross country and track and field coach, was head football coach for one season, and also spent time as Interim Athletics Director. Gilliard had two stints as an assistant football coach, and was also an assistant track coach. Between his times working at the University, Gilliard served as principal at nearby Hempstead High School. “This was a great honor for my dad and our family,” stated Reginald ‘Bo’ Gilliard, son of the late Gillard. “This is like the last chapter of my dad’s life. I thank Prairie View and the SWAC for sending him off and we would like to say

thank you. I am so honored to just be a part of this occasion. I just want to thank Prairie View for putting him up for this honor and again I really appreciate it.” Jackson was a record-setting track and field athlete at Prairie View A&M, graduating as one of the most accomplished sprinters in the nation. After an outstanding career at Muskogee (Okla.) High in which she set state records in the 100, 220, and 440 yd relay, Jackson came to Prairie View A&M and became a four-time conference champion and five-time All-America under SWAC and PVAMU Hall of Famer Barbara Jacket A 2006 inductee into the PVAMU Sports Hall of Fame, Jackson holds the conference record in the 400m dash -- a time which has stood since 1978.

A member of the Lady Panthers' 1979 AIAW national championship track team, Jackson won the national championship in the 400 meters in 1979. In that same year, she was a member of the 1979 mile relay team which set the American and World Record. “This is a great honor and privilege to be inducted in the SWAC Hall of Fame,” said the newly inducted Patricia Jackson. “It’s been 41 years and to think that my race and mark I set back in 1978 is still standing. This is quite an honor. Usually most are awarded after they are deceased. I am glad that God has blessed me to be able to see this award and to be able to accept it myself rather than someone else. It’s really a honor to know all these other inductees. “Wow! Wow is all I can say I’m so excited.”

MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT NEW MEXICO STATE LAS CRUSES, N.M. – The Prairie View A&M University men’s basketball team lost at New Mexico State 69-57 Sunday. Reigning SWAC Player of the Week Gary Blackston scored a game-high 19 points and just missed another double-double with nine rebounds, while adding two assists and three steals.

Dennis Jones scored 17 points and added three rebounds, and Zachary Hamilton scored 14 points and had three rebounds for PVAMU (2-5). The Panthers never led in contest, shooting just over 39 percent from the field (20-51), nearly 43 percent from three-point range (6-14), and 69 percent from the free throw line

(11-16) in out-rebounding New Mexico State (6-1) 33-31. After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, Prairie View A&M battled back to cut the deficit to four at 32-28 at halftime on a layup by J.D. Wallace. Early in the second half, Prairie View A&M twice cut the lead to two, the last occasion on a

three-pointer by Hamilton to make the score 35-33 but would get no closer. The Panthers return to action Wednesday at Hawai’i in an 11 p.m. CT game with a live radio broadcast on the PVAMU Sports Network. #pvamubaseball
