Government Seeks to Limit Junk Food Ads to Kids By Sherry Christian The Elite News The Obama administration is planning to ask food companies and restaurants to cut back on advertising unhealthy foods to children. Under guidelines obtained by The Associated Press, companies would be urged only to market foods to children ages 2 through 17 if they are low in fats, sugars and sodium and contain specified healthy ingredients. The government is planning to propose these voluntary guidelines soon, according to three people familiar with the process who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The guidelines set parameters that are stricter than many companies have set for themselves and would eliminate much of the advertising viewers see today - on television, in magazines, in stores and on the Internet - for foods that appeal to children. The food industry has already been successful in reducing the number

companies only market foods that have a significant amount of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk products, fish, extra lean meat, eggs, nuts, seeds or beans. Foods that have any trans-fat, more than one gram of saturated fat, 13 grams of added sugars and 210 mg of sodium in a serving would not be eligible for marketing to children under the guidelines. The agencies suggest that the industry focus their efforts on foods that are most heavily marketed to children - breakfast cereals, carbonated beverages, restaurant foods and snack foods. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who authored the original bill asking for the guidelines, said that he is pleased with the agencies' recommendations. "Kids are being bombarded daily with ads for unhealthy foods and it is long past time that we limit the amount of junk food advertising," he said. It is unclear how many companies will sign on. Public health advocates have argued that the industry's self-regulation is not enough and pushed the government to set guidelines. In 2009, Congress directed the Federal Trade Commission, Agriculture Department, Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control to develop the recommendations. The guidelines they wrote are broad, applying to almost any promotion a child might see for a food - including text messages, product placement in video games and celebrity endorsements. In a statement to be released, the agencies said the proposal, which would be phased in over five years and is up for public comment until the summer, is "to encourage a marketing environment that supports, rather than undermines, parents' efforts to get their children to eat more healthfully." Specifically, the agencies recommend that

Subway stores could close Sometimes doing what is noble can be very challenging. Just ask Natalie and Travis Brown. They were committed to bringing a healthier lifestyle to the southern sector of Dallas County, by partnering with Subway Stores. After all, they felt the area had enough soul food, hamburger, fried chicken and fish restaurants. Little did they know how challenging the endeavor would be in an area where, former Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce president Reginald Gates conceded, in an earlier interview, that crime is a major problem and law enforcement This Ledbetter Store is one of two locations. patrolling efforts have been an issue. “When we have major events, south of downtown Dallas, was robbed there’s extra coverage,” he said, and workers terrorized by the gunadding, “but we (black businesses and wielding men. citizens) are here all the time.” The list goes on and on. There Since they embarked on this have been numerous incidents that journey, the Browns have run up keep the Browns using their resources against obstacle after obstacle--the to rebuild and replace, instead of latest being as recent as Thursday, enhancing what is already established. February 9, 2012, when they received The Browns have had several an early morning call that the alarm break-ins, acts of vandalism and sounded because someone was at their robberies since they opened up in South Dallas store, 3125 Grand 2000. Add those additional costs to Avenue, on the roof taking the copper standard operating costs, and you can off of the air conditioning unit. see why the Browns need some Last year, the store located at 2207 support. To add insult to injury, E. Ledbetter; which is located further they’ve been told that they must vacate

the premises by the end of month-the last date of African American History Month. This would also be significant because should the two stores close, there will be no Blackowned Subways in the entire city of Dallas, according to the Browns. In an interview several years ago, Ms. Brown talked about how they hoped to “leave a profitable legacy” for their daughter and how the increase in robberies could keep that dream from being a reality. “The cost to do business is so expensive. We are asking ourselves if it is really worth it. We’re trying to put a healthy meal into the mouths of the community and then they bite the hand that feeds them.” Acknowledging that Subway has guidelines that each franchisee must adhere to, Ms. Brown says the numerous issues that result from operating in a high-crime area has made it difficult to comply; however she does believe that if provided an extension, they can turn things around, make the necessary improvements and turn a profit. “One store was closed for an entire month because of a robbery and vandalism,” she explained. “Resources that could have gone toward improving on the business instead went to repair and replace equipment, items and product. “We need people coming in the stores, but not through the roof.”

Still as the shortest month in the year rapidly ticks away, Ms. Brown is a little anxious. In a letter from Subway representatives, the Browns were given instructions to meet Subway standards. Those standards can be met, said Ms. Brown, with a little time. “We aren’t asking for money, just give us a little more time to show some profitability and to demonstrate to Subway how we have been an integral part of this community,” she said. “We have a good product, great employees and we have been very supportive of the communities we serve.” At press time, atty. Larry Fowler, representing Subway, had not returned calls to his Arlington office. The Browns are asking for support. They have already contacted Sen. Royce West’s office and other business owners. They are going on the radio and telling their story to anyone who will listen. “ S e n . We s t h a s b e e n v e r y supportive and so have others. We need everyone to write letters.” The two to call or send letters to are: --Atty. Rollin with a Brother... Welcome to the weekend, Baaaby! What a Whirlwind week...We buried Whitney Houston last Saturday and Elite News Publisher Jordan Blair on Thursday... Both were giants in their fields and loved by many. Please remember the Blair and Houston families in your prayers. Ya know, it's not so much now when everyone is focused on loss, but in the coming weeks and months after the attention dies down when your attention will be truly needed...This is a good time to reflect on the things and people important to you..Mardi Gras ended and Lent started on Wednesday. How about giving up something of the next 40 days that would be an important gesture to those who love you and at the same time refocus you on the stuff that counts...I'm just sayin...After last weeks Love Train Concert, enjoying the mellow grooves of Music Soulchild tonight at The Verizon Theater, or Boyz To Men Sunday at Dallas House of Blues, might be just enough to move you forward into the rejuvenation of Spring. I know one thing, nobody should be exhausted after either of these shows...I hear some people took naps all week after last weekend’s 6-7 hour Love Train Concert, lol! The NBA All Star game is Sunday at 6pm on TNT...Big ups to The World Champion Dallas Mavericks, who still get little respect...Dirk Nowitzki is the Mavs only player in this weeks game! It all starts this evening at 7P on ESPN with the celebrity game..That's always a trip! Peep the Slam Dunk Contest Saturday Night and 3 point shoot out festivities start at 7p on TNT and NO, Blake Griffin last year’s champ will not defend his title! Neither Dirk, nor Jason "Jet' Terry are in the 3 point shootout...Booo NBA! Ya know, we've had BET and TV One for awhile now. Well, get ready for two new cable networks that could launch in 2012! will no longer be there, if he’s still there they won’t have a chance. Tony Romo is an NFL Quarterback, not great but you can win in this league with him as a Quarterback. The rest of your team can’t have many deficiencies with Tony at the helm. The running back situation has to be almost great, and that’s not so. I think the backs they have are good but because of injuries, not very dependable. Demarco Murray and Felix Jones are borderline great but they seem to get hurt at the same time. Phillip Tanner had an opportunity take over that situation, and wouldn’t you know it he got hurt. Tanner the local kid from Kimble High School. Felix Jones is an excellent complimentary back but, when given the starting position he can’t put but three back to back games before he injured. We didn’t realize what we had with Emmitt Smith. The Offensive line will be better because of the fact that they will have a training camp. The tackles are solid Doug Free and Tyron Smith, they could switch them, but either way they can get the job done. The interior line, Center and Guard are suspect. One good solid guard can solve the problem. I don’t think the offense is as far away as the defense and both can be made better if they can stay healthy. I think Mike Woick will help in that area. Coaches are they capable of leading this team to another level? I think so. Jason Garrett will take a minute but he’s capable of taking this team where ever it needs to go. And I certainly think Jerry Jones will pick up what ever is need.

w/ Leon Simon Last week playing General Manager we corrected some of the Cowboy’s defensive woes. This week we’ll take a look at there offensive woes. I do believe the acquiring of new strength coach Mike Woick will solve some of the Cowboy’s offensive and defensive problems. How? You ask. Mike was the strength coach during two of the Super-Bowl years 92and 93. During those years they were extremely strong finishers. The first Super-Bowl without him, Pittsburgh came from behind with a strong push. They’ve been notorious for giving up leads. I think these young guys start lifting weights and fall in love with their bodies and forget their objective ( NFL football ). They start lifting to look good , not play good. Thus a ton of muscle pulls. Felix Jones, Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, and the whole secondary will miss time with groins and hamstrings. I’m one of those old timers that think continuous muscle pulls are loser limps. I think these things can be corrected with proper diet. I don’t believe the Cowboy’s has had a health receiving corp and running back tandem for a whole season since Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. Football is a collision sport, but these guys are missing playing time with non-contact injuries. I didn’t mention Terrence Newman, Terrence and Mike Jenkins get hurt going to practice, and I think Terrence

to Gospel greats like BeBe and CeCe Winans. Talk about having some good ole toetapping Baptist church. I ask the question, what is a good funeral with out some good drama? That's right every funeral has to have its share of drama...Being Bobby Brown, the exhusband of the famed singer, arrived late to the funeral. Not only did he arrive late but came with and entourage of nine people. WHO DOES THAT?..After being asked to moved several times Bobby and his crew decided to leave the funeral. Bobby later gave this statement,"My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston," Brown later said in a statement. "We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continued to ask us and no one else to move. Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi Kristina."In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. ... I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how." In honor of Whitney Houston the color of the week is Nippy. On the high end you say Nippy and on the low end you will say Lavendar. This has been your entertainment news for the week. Hope you enjoy and until we meet again, LIVE, LAUGH and LOVE. -- Shuug

Shuug Swirl Hey! Hey! Hey! Welcome back to another week in the world of Shuug. Let’s jump right into it. As we all know, the entertainment world has suffered yet another tragedy. The Diva, The Legend. America's Pop Princess has passed. Thats right Whitney Houston passed Saturday, February 11, at a Beverly Hills Hotel. Right now the cause of death is unknown.. The famed singer was found in the bathtub submerged under water. Many rumors are out stating possible suicide, overdose, and even possible murder. According to LAPD and the coroners office, toxicology reports won’t be available for 6-8 weeks. The Homegoing service for Ms. Houston was this past Saturday and the saints marched IN!!! The who's who in the entertainment world was in attendance to pay their respects and homage to their dear friend. This homegoing service was one to remember, with tributes from R&B greats like Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys

On Sunday night, it’s the star-studded Mocca Cosmetics 10th annual Appreciation Gala at the Wyndham Hotel Love Field Airport, 3300 W. Mockingbird Lane at 7p.m. Talk about a gala affair! Complete with red carpet, celebrities, beautiful people; it’s a celebration of success. In addition to vendors and the business and community leaders recognition, a highlight of the evening will be the recognition of the top consultants. Talk about a heartwarming experience. Everyone is excited as honorees are announced. Last year Dr. Ray of Deep in the Roots Salon was the top consultant and the Hon. Carolyn Davis received the Mocca Cosmetics “Hoodie Award” for outstanding community involvement.

Mocca Cosmetics is continuing to grow and its founders, Eboneke and Kena, realize the importance of showing love to their many consultants who help keep the Mocca name alive and thriving. Founded in 2003 by Eboneke and Kena, this company is growing into a powerhouse, mainly because these two beautiful sisters are talented, highly motivated and a pleasure to work with. Mocca products are great and the prices are reasonable. Equally important is the work that the ladies and men of Mocca do in the community. Although small, but still growing, the owners are committed to being

“good corporate citizens” by recycling their dollars in the communities that patronize their business. In addition to supporting fashion shows on college campuses, providing makeovers and participating on programs; Mocca Cosmetics also makes prom day special for young ladies by sponsoring trips to the hair salon, where they also receive manicures and pedicures and then they go shopping to pick out dresses and accessories. Now that special lady is picked from those who participate in the essay contest and the winners are always very excited and

appreciative. While it may not seem like a big deal, for many it is and Mocca does everything to make these young ladies feel pampered. Looking back over the years, these ladies can share their experiences and hopefully reciprocate by helping some other youth ladies. A business has to start somewhere. Whether someone has a dream, concept or money to invest into a project; the goal has to be to get started and that’s just what Eboneke and Kena did with Mocca Cosmetics. These two enterprising young ladies are building an empire with their cosmetics and skin care line and they are to be commended for their level of professionalism, quality products and service. They deserve support and that’s why the SpotLITE is on Mocca Cosmetics. ----Cheryl Smith

Plano North Links raise awareness about heart disease Taking on issues is the norm for members of Links, Inc. and the Plano North Metroplex Chapter continues to stress the importance of those programs centered around the arts, nation trends and services, international President Mazzie Moses trends and services, youth services and health and human services. The chapter held its annual red dress event at Arlington Hall Lee Park recently to raise the awareness of women, regarding heart healthy living. In a switch from previous years, when the chapter invited the American Heart Association to speak about heart disease and prevention, the committee decided on a style show. This year, the committee decided to call the brunch “Heart Healthiness With Style” and planned a style show. Each participant modeled a red dress and shared their heart healthy regimen. Organizers said, by showcasing this group of women, the chapter hoped to send a variety of messages to women about how they can become more heart healthy. The models were women familiar to the group, women who serve to inspire others to commit themselves to improving their health by establishing regimens that lead to healthy lifestyles.

“The heart healthy style show is a first step toward doing something a bit different with our red dress event, and thanks to the ingenuity of Gayle Barge, Plano North Metroplex Chapter’s

There’s a connection between the red dress event and its impact on women’s health in general, Ms. Moses, President of Plano North Metroplex Chapter of Links, Inc. explained: “We have worked to create an atmosphere of awareness that is fun and beneficial. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is devoted to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. As women, we have a Vice-President of Programs, and the support and guidance of Mazzie Moses, Chapter president, we hope to have a greater impact on the women within the communities we serve,” said Hazel Carlos, Co- chair of National Trends and Services for Plano North Metroplex Chapter, along with Tr a c e y B r i s t e rPugh. It was a packed

house for this year’s event. There are five chapters in the Cluster and members from throughout the Metroplex supported the effort.

duty to take care of our health because taking care of ourselves allows us to care for our families and loved ones more effectively.” The event is empowering for the women, said Ms. Moses, who also talked about other programs that the 52 members of her chapter are responsible for, including one that mentors to 20 families headed by single mothers. “We work with them for three years, making sure these families are aware of resources that are available to them,” said Ms. Moses. “We provide information on financial literacy and we give them resources to help improve their conditions. “ We ’ r e w o r k i n g t o b u i l d s t r o n g e r communities and families and we need our women healthy,” Ms. Moses concluded.

Global and PepsiCo Inc. - have already joined an initiative sponsored by the Better Business Bureau to limit their marketing to children. The standards are similar but not as strict. Scott Faber, lobbyist for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, says many companies have also reformulated foods to reduce unhealthy ingredients. Sponsored Links "While the outside of the box hasn't changed, what's in the inside of the box has changed dramatically," he says. The food industry's efforts to change recipes and limit advertising have come, as consumers are increasingly educated and aware of what they are eating. Better nutrition has also become a higher public priority, as evidenced by First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign to combat childhood obesity. Still, public health advocates say they believe a lot of work remains. Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, says advocates hope the guidelines will make a greater impact. As a mom watching television with my son or walking through the aisles of the supermarket, it seems like nothing has changed. If companies applied these standards, it would get rid of almost all junk food marketing to kids for good.
