Congresswoman Johnson on EPA Reverses ESTABLISHED IN 1960 lite new Vehicle Emissions Standards
DALLAS, TX – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement after Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt announced the agency will roll back Obama-era regulations to improve gas economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from certain motor vehicles: “Reversing the important emissions standards against the advice of industry experts has no basis in reality,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Mr. Pruitt is choosing to ignore the positive impacts that these standards have by reducing air pollution and saving Americans billions of dollars at the pump. Pollution creates not only an environmental crisis, but also a health crisis for seniors, children,
and others who are vulnerable to pollutants. 25 million Americans – including more than 6 million children – suffer from asthma. We should not be rolling back the very safeguards that protect them. “Since these regulations were put in place, Texans have realized $3 billion in savings through stronger fuel economy and global warming emissions standards. Our state can also expect to gain over 24,000 new jobs if these standards remain in place. The clean car standards are achievable and working, and automakers are on track to meet them at a lower cost than originally anticipated. That is why I am co-sponsoring H.R. 5226, the Clean and Efficient Cars Act of 2018, which supports the efforts between agencies,
auto manufacturers, labor and environmental groups to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase fuel efficiency. No one supports pumping more pollution in our air, and no one wants to spend more money on gasoline.” The Obama administration approved the latest clean car standards in 2012, with the support of automakers. In January 2017, the EPA concluded that these standards are working, achievable, and should not be rolled back. Yet, without any change in the facts, Mr. Pruitt is reversing that decision, ignoring the thousands of pages of research and analysis that support keeping the standards in place.
50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. DALLAS, TX – Today, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “More than 50 years after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life to see an end to the injustices of racial segregation across America, we continue to celebrate his life and lasting legacy. Countless Americans have benefitted from the profound impact of Dr. King’s life work and sacrifice. He is a shining example of love and tolerance for all mankind, regardless of race, religion, or background. His assassination spurred a wave of peaceful protests, inspiring individuals all over the world to defend their rights and values. “People of all races lean on his non-violent teachings to empower them through their own strug-

gles for freedom and equality. Human unity was the core of Dr. King’s message, a call for peace and peaceful cooperation that echoes into the civil rights movements of modern America. The unity that Dr. King taught is an ideal to strive for in our everyday lives as we work to lift or communities towards the light of peace, love, and prosperity. “It’s a fight between justice and injustice. Our battle is as strong today as it was 50 years ago. Until we all work together, we will
not achieve the dream. Working with different ideologies, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds to promote true equality in our society requires the kind of col-
laboration that Dr. King worked and strived for until his very last breath. The profound diversity of our nation requires a cohesive union willing to protect and provide the justice for all we are innately entitled to as human beings.”

The Cancer is Back By Darryl Blair, Sr.
Well, what a difference a new term brings. I was just the other day riding along, and on the radio comes (hustle man) Dwaine Caraway doing a commercial about spaying and neutering your pets. This is the correct person for talking about spaying and neutering pets, he wants you to fix male and female pets. My purpose for writing this article today is to inform the readers and more importantly the constituents in the City at large to be watchful of Dwaine Caraway as he works to enrich himself by using his position in Office and the communities that he serves, and the City of Dallas. Only this way we spay and neuter Dwaine Caraway and Claudia Fowler as they are acting like a pack of crazed wild dogs when it comes to corporate entities looking to move in our community. Which brings them (Martin Marietta / Union Pacific) in focus for the hustle in the name of a rogue charitable donation led by Claudia Fowler. These proceeds never make it back to our community and this situation has happened before with Claudia Fowler receiving funds from Austin Industries as Channel 5 reported along with the Dallas Morning News proved she got an initial payment of $7,000 and then there was conditional payments up until 2015, that is when the company requested accounting statements that CLAUDIA FOWLER could not, and never did provide. I am almost for certain in my estimation and my guestimation that out of the $7,000 first awarded, Dwaine Caraway was somewhere close to divide up the funds, as Claudia Fowler could not give answer not even to the company that was giving her the money it is deplorable, that you have a person in Dwaine Caraway and Claudia Fowler who use their position in government to perch up on a rock and swoop down like a buzzard getting items (Monies’) for themselves all the while the community still remain broken and disenfranchised. It is tragic what’s happening over in Joppa, and what’s taking place over in Joppa as it relates to Dwaine Caraway and Claudia Fowler it’s apparent what they have done to these folks in that Community they deserve much better.
And it is probably one As black folks in Dallas of the more disenfranchised we need to wake up and areas of Dallas, Councilman become informed and fully Kevin Felder is doing all he aware of what’s going on with can to rescue that area and these individual’s (Dwaine make sure that they’re not Caraway and Claudia Fowler) mistreated, as the “oh by as a sitting city council the way” treatment in years member, I’m trying to past. understand why Mayor Mike Dwaine Caraway Can anyone tell me Rawlings has not called for a ,what is Dwaine Caraway Investigation as it relates to doing over in Councilman Dwaine Caraway, time and Kevin Felder’s District time again he has popped encouraging corporate up where some monies have entities such as Martin been transferred or monies Marietta, and Union Pahave been exchanging hands cific meeting with them while he sets everything privately to solicit money in motion, but on the back of them for a charity that end he never knows what is really non-existent, and is Claudia Fowler happened. not fully sanctioned by the And then he had the austate of Texas, it’s really a futile effort, and dacity to throw his mama under the bus by a further MIS-REPRESENTATION OF saying his momma told him not to talk to SOUTHERN DALLAS. y’all (as in the Press) did she also tell you Now this is another here we are again, not to run for public office and further put but the Same Old Situation. you’re not as slick as you think, although you as slick as oil on plastic this is not going to work. People are going to continue to follow and the media is going to stay after you and at some point in time there’s going to be an investigation into what you’ve done and what you’re doing and you are so messy that it’s going to show tragic for our community. Black Dallas please wake up, it’s high time we start putting these folks in the frame and labeling it as it should be Dwaine Caraway is not a representative of the people he’s representative of self and he uses individuals like Claudia Fowler to run shotgun up front and then he goes and gets the money when things are taking place that’s my estimation. And it doesn’t take a genius to see the writing on the wall why would you try direct monies and charitable donations to an entity and then you don’t have the wherewithal as a public official with your name, your position, your integrity on the line and you don’t follow up to make sure that they are above board. And additionally you turn around again even after they have been discovered, you choose not to keep books or be able to account for funds that were received at your encouragement and yet you recommend Claudia Fowler yet again for another project, and in a district that is not yours. That District does not belong to you that’s something Councilman Kevin Felder needs to broker and he’s made himself clear that he didn’t want those harmful toxins in his community hurting the people of Joppa, they’ve been abused and misuse long enough they need to run Claudia Fowler out like a witch on a broom get her out of town. This is tragic that our community has been represented by such public eyesores as you read this article I want you to walk away and have a wonderful day but I want you to be more proactive and not reactive let’s get these cancerous individuals out of the way. Thank you very much continue to read and Elite News will have you something to read God bless.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela: “Mother of the Nation” By Kimberley Blair Pleasant
Kimberley Blair Pleasant
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, former first Lady of South Africa, died Monday at the
age of 81 after a long illness. Madikizela-Mandela was married from 1958 to 1996, to former South African president, Nelson Mandela. Even though she was separated by Mandela’s imprisonment for a great portion of their marriage, Madikizela-Mandela stayed loyal and continued the fight he started against Apartheid while Mandela was imprisoned. Throughout her marriage and life, Madikizela-Mandela was consid-

ered courageous because she refused to bow down to the injustice of Apartheid and the mistreatment of Black South Africans. Even after her divorce from Mandela, she continued her fight against injustice. Madikizela-Mandela was considered a political force and contentious figure in South Africa and around the world. She was an iconic figure in the fight to end the racist Apartheid system of South Africa. She was also member of the South African parliament She was an inspiration to

many South Africans; one in particular was South African Anglican cleric and theologian, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. “Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to me, and to generations of activists”, stated Tutu, after her passing on Monday. Because of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s tireless activism against Apartheid, she was honored with being called, “Mother of the Nation”. This charming, intelligent, complex, fiery and eloquent leader’s legacy will endure forever.
Side Hustle or Side Hobby? By: Alonda Price Many of us are moving along living paycheck to almost paycheck. Looking for opportunities to “come-up.” In our search we happen upon the idea of entrepreneurship. There are so many options and the thought of becoming our own boss takes shape but where do we start? My suggestion: Start with passion. Find something you love and go all in. Just make sure you don’t fall into the trap of not knowing whether you’re falling into a Side Hustle or Side Hobby (HH). Alonda Price It’s a slippery slope but easy to navigate if you’re watchful. I have two girlfriends, we’ll just call them Erica and Lisa. Both are crafty and imaginative. They each spend countless hours designing and creating. Suddenly, Erica decides her talents could be profitable, so she goes out and registers a business name, orders business cards, gets a website to advertise her skillset. Lisa, on the other hand, spends her weekends crafting to relieve stress. She’s been approached by friends and family and
has begun to take and fulfill personalized requests. If we had to guess, which of the two has a hustle and which has a hobby? With the limited information provided one would think it would be a safe bet to vote Erica for the Hustle and Lisa for the Hobby, right? Don’t be too quick to decide. Based upon what little we know only one of the two is actively operating a business and so far, it looks like Lisa to me. One of the major pitfalls in entrepreneurship is assuming just because you write a business plan or have a business name, or even funding for that matter, you have a bonafide business. While having these tools in place are a necessity don’t count on them to solidify your hustle. What defines your HH category is your work ethic, your drive, and your willingness to understand sacrifices may be necessary to move from side hustle to a successful business. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a profitable side hobby just make sure you understand there is a difference
and ensure your decision aligns with your vision and goals.

Eat Clean I’m a big fan of packing wholesome lunches for my family. Avoiding processed food is one way to get the best nutrients. To do this in a significant way making a plan is key. And since we’re talking about our precious little ones - let’s be sure part of that plan includes some fun! You are not “depriving” your kids if you are not throwing in the highly processed lunchables or gummy fruit snacks other kids are bringing to school. In reality, you are providing them with a priceless foundation of good health, while also expanding their palates (far beyond PB&J) along the way. That’s not to say they won’t indulge in processed treats on occasion! You can find other ways to keep their lunches fun without all the unnecessary junk food. Kids (and adults) eat with their eyes first. Adding a couple food picks or colorful silicone muffin cups is a quick way to add some fun flair to a lunch! Try this Healthified Chicken Caesar Pitas Lunch Idea. Lunch Idea; Healthified Chicken Caesar Pitas

“The Power of Family”
The Brotherhood By James Durham
Over the weekend many people celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. All across social media people were typing the words “HE is Risen”. All over soJames Durham cial media people were streaming videos and productions of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. People were even streaming videos of children saying Easter speeches. However, the one joy that I felt was a common denominator amongst all things being posted on social media, were the countless pictures of people being with FAMILY. This was very powerful to me because regard-
less of all the shenanigans going on in our world today, regardless of all of the turmoil, distractions, injustices, lies and deceit; FAMILY bonds and ties STILL remain strong. The enemy wants the FAMILY broken. The enemy wants the FAMILY confused. The enemy wants the FAMILY shaken and eyes turned away from GOD. Oh but this past weekend the Power of Family was on display. As a child of God, this weekend I was reminded of the scripture, 2 Chronicles 7:14 that says, if MY people who are called by MY name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek MY face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. THIS is the Power of Family. Be Blessed Jdurham19@hotmail.com

RE-ELECT JUDGE MARTIN HOFFMAN IN THE MAY RUNOFF Solid Experience and Track Record in the Community Matter Vote Early May 14-18; Election Day May 22 You would be hard pressed to find a Judge in Dallas County who has worked harder in the community to go above and beyond regular job duties than Judge Martin Hoffman. He was a leader of the “Class of 2006” Democratic who swept Dallas County for Democrats for the first time in decades. Since then, he has earned a solid reputation
on the bench and he has mentored dozens of young people who are interested in legal careers. Judge Hoffman has been active in local high schools as a speaker and mock trial judge. He has served on dozens of committees and projects with various legal associations. He has one of the strongest internship programs among our judges, allowing students in the local community to directly observe and learn about our courts and gain insight into what it is like to be an attorney or judge. For all of this work, he has received numerous awards, including the 2017 Dallas Woman Lawyers Outstanding Jurist Award, and the 2016 JL Turner Legal Association Hon. Cleo Steele Committed Mentor Award. He has also earned the endorsements of Democratic leaders who are around the system daily and know who is doing a good job, including Senator Royce West, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Commissioner Elba Garcia and others. It is incumbent on us, the voters, to research our judicial candidates. Did you know that literally hundreds of thousands

of people go through our justice system in Dallas County each year? For instance, it is said that Love Field is the only public building in Dallas that has more daily foot traffic than Crowley Courthouse. Our judges have a huge impact on the community in terms of lives, decisions and efficient use of taxpayer dollars. This is why experience, fairness and track record matter so much. In the race for the 68th Civil District Court, Judge Hoffman clearly has earned re-election, and his experience and track record are incomparable. Here is a look at his qualifications versus his opponent’s… JUDGE HOFFMAN has handled more than 300 civil jury trials. His opponent has handled only one civil case in the last decade. JUDGE HOFFMAN is Board Certified in Civil Law. His opponent is not board certified. JUDGE HOFFMAN is endorsed as qualified by the Dallas Committee for a Quali-
fied Judiciary. His opponent was not endorsed.

JUDGE HOFFMAN was recommended by the Dallas Morning News. Not recommended due to lack of experience. JUDGE HOFFMAN was a leader of the “Class of 2006” Democrats who worked with the Democratic Party to turn Dallas County blue. His opponent has no track record with the party. JUDGE HOFFMAN is endorsed by Stonewall Democrats, Preston Hollow Democrats, Metrocrest Democrats, Lake Highlands White Rock Democrats, Mexican American Democrats, Tejano Democrats, North Texas Asian Democrats, Far North Dallas Richardson Democrats, Mexican American Bar Association, Dallas Black Criminal Bar Association, and AFL-CIO Dallas. His opponent received no group endorsements.

VOTE JUDGE KEN TAPSCOTT IN THE MAY RUNOFF We Can’t Let Angry Lawyers Take Out a Good, Honest Judge Over One Ruling Vote Early May 14-18; Election Day May 22 In judicial races, there is often more than meets the eye. Voters have a hard time researching every candidate. When you walk into the voting booth, you may have dozens of judicial candidates to choose from. It has never been more important to know the facts before you vote. This is especially true of the upcoming Democratic Primary Runoff Election May 22. Judge Ken Tapscott is the 2017 Democratic Elected Official of the Year. He has been in office for 12 years, and he has exemplary ratings in the Dallas Bar Association judicial evaluation polls, with over 90% of lawyers approving of his work. He has also put more trials to a jury than any other civil judge in Dallas County over the last decade. Why is Judge Tapscott even facing a challenge you ask? Because he followed the law and angered a handful of powerful attorneys who lost a case in his court. Instead of being satisfied with a fair, just ruling, they decided to recruit and support a challenger to take out Judge Tapscott in the Democratic Primary. One of the attorneys involved even

hired this challenger, Paula Rosales, to work at his firm in the meantime, and they have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into her campaign. Here are the real facts. Judge Tapscott presided over a medical malpractice suit. A paid expert witness was brought into the trial by the plaintiffs. But this expert witness had no prior experience with the medical technology in question, called a virtual colonoscopy. The defense asked that this witness not be allowed to testify because he lacked expertise. Because he had to follow the law, Judge Tapscott upheld the motion and removed the witness. The plaintiffs lost their case in Judge Tapscott's court, and again on appeal. Clearly, Judge Tapscott did what was the right, if difficult decision. “What concerns me most is the example this sets,” said Judge Tapscott. “If lawyers don’t believe in the process at the trial level, if they just want their way at any cost, then the fairness and objectivity of the system is under attack. Do you want to walk into a courtroom where the judge is fair and unbiased, or do you want a courtroom that is owned by lawyers with their own agendas, bullying judges? I find this upsetting. Many of my colleagues do as well. We have a process. We have a court of appeals. We have a system in place when people disagree with a ruling. If we let angry lawyers use the ballot box to take out good judges, our system is in jeopardy and the independence of every judge is at stake.” Here’s a quick rundown of Judge Tapscott’s experience versus his opponent’s.
JUDGE TAPSCOTT has tried more than 420 civil jury trials. His opponent has tried zero. JUDGE TAPSCOTT has 21 years of civil law experience. His opponent has six months. JUDGE TAPSCOTT is endorsed as qualified by the Dallas Committee for a Qualified Judiciary. His opponent was not endorsed. JUDGE TAPSCOTT has been rated as excellent or acceptable by 90% of lawyers in the Dallas Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Poll. His opponent has never been reviewed. JUDGE TAPSCOTT was named the 2017 Elected Official of the Year by the Democratic Party. His opponent has no service history with the party. JUDGE TAPSCOTT is endorsed by Progressive Voters League, Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, Dallas Black Criminal Bar Association, Mexican American Democrats, Mexican American Bar Association, Lake Highlands White Rock Democrats, Preston Hollow Democrats, Metrocrest Democrats, North Texas Asian Democrats, Far North Dallas Richardson Democrats, AFL-CIO Dallas, and Teamsters. His opponent received one endorsement.

Miranda and his Rights In Arizona in early March of 1963, a young woman was kidnapped and raped. The assailant was not known to the victim, but the victim’s brother got a partial license plate that eventually led the Phoenix police to a suspect. After the was identified in a lineup by the victim, detectives interrogated him for two hours. He confessed to the crime, and signed the confession, indicating that he freely and voluntarily made the statement. He was never told that he had the “right to remain silent” or that he had the right to have an attorney present. He wasn’t given those warnings because the law didn’t require the Police to give them to a suspect. Yet. The man’s name was Ernest Miranda. He is the namesake for what we all now call the “Miranda” rights. He had an 8th grade education, a prior criminal record and was “mentally abnormal”. He was found competent to stand trial, and determined to be legally sane at the time of the crime. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape. He appealed his conviction all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States. The law already required police to allow a suspect to speak to an attorney if he requested to consult with one. The new question was whether they should

be told they have the right to speak to one prior to any questioning and without even asking for one. By a 5-4 margin, the Supreme Court sided with Mr. Miranda and reversed his conviction, giving us the rights we are all now familiar with. The decision requiring police to inform suspects of these rights came down on June 13, 1966, authored by Chief Justice Earl Warren - a former prosecutor and eventual author of “The Warren Commission Report” on President Kennedy’s Assassination. Mr. Miranda was tried again - without the now unlawful confession - and again sentenced to 20 years. He eventually paroled out of prison. He was stabbed to death at a bar. Police eventually arrested the man who killed him. When they brought him down for questioning, they read him the Miranda rights in order to get a lawful statement for the killing of Miranda himself. As we continue our “Landmark” series next week, we’ll discuss the case that guarantees everyone the right to an attorney. to vote. The deadline for the runoff election is April 23. When you get to the polling location, you can present several forms of IDs. For more information go to: sos. state.tx.us. B. « Nevertheless She Persisted » Panel to celebrate Women’s Month I had the chance to hear from strong professional women, including attorney Marty Jo Taylor, discuss their struggles to rise above misogyny in the work force : “stand on the facts, and truth will always lead the way.”
A.Did you know that 600,000 registered voters in Texas have no official ID? I have personally volunteered hundred of hours to defend and promote the Voting Rights Act. In 2011, to counter a discriminatory city redistricting plan, I chaired the Dallas Redistricting Taskforce Legal Action Committee, filing a counter-request with the Civil Rights Division of the Deparment of Justice. Further, I have also registered hundred of voters. And I can tell you that a lot of work goes into getting someone registered. Unfortunately, that is only one part of getting out the vote (“GOTV”). The second part is ensuring that everyone who is registered has access to the voting booth. Sadly, Texas is one of 34 states considered “Voter ID States,” where voters must present some form of official identification before they can vote. As a municipal court judge, I heard many stories of individuals who struggled to obtained their ID’s. I heard many times how not having an ID translated into not “feeling like a person.” This was one of the reasons for my spearheading the Fresh Start Docket, a multi-organizational effort to fill-in specific gaps in the City of Dallas’ justice system, giving defendants a true “fresh start” to get their lives on track for them-

selves and their families. This past week, I had the chance to meet the founder of Spread the Vote, Kat Calvin. A passionate young woman who recognized the need to have a service dedicated to assisting individuals obtain official IDs. Spread The Vote helps voters overcome the challenges of time, money, bureaucracy, and transportation that prevent them from getting IDs. She is starting a chapter here in Dallas ! And on Resurection Sunday morning, I was blessed to attend the Sunrise Service at Friendship West, where Rev. Dr. Fredrick Haynes reminded us that there are « Moral Monsters » in this world. Monsters who do not recognize the humanity in others ; monsters who practice a « value gap » for whom some lives are valued and others are not. But even in the face of monsters, we must avoid complacency. Complacency will make you an enemy to excellence. He reminded us how John Lewis—now the moral conscience/compass of congress—often got in « good trouble. » In other words, while Mr. Lewis might have been challenging the status quo, he was doing it with God on his side. We were also reminded that April 4th marks the 50th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Martin L. King. Jr., the drum major of justice. As a lifelong human rights advocate and former human rights advisor who worked with the U.S. Department of State, Dr. King’s teachings have always been a source of inspiration. As the campaign trail has been prolonged in a runoff election for me, I remind myself of Dr. King’s words, that: “Nothing would be more tragic than for us to turn back now.” I decided to run for office because I firmly believe that more must be done to give everyone a fair shake in the courts systems.
