62 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY Budget Proposal Does Make America Great Again Pt2 ESTABLISHED IN 1960 Over the last 30 plus years – my time and work has been dedicated to serving those in my community and working to bring about better opportunities for the Congresswoman Eddie people in Texas and Bernice Johnson our nation. Americans are working hard every day to make ends meet for themselves and their families – by working more than one job at time, taking out student loans for advanced degrees to gain a competitive advantage in the job industry, teaching in public schools, etc. There are other countless ways that Americans continue to push forward with hard work with an expectation that there will be an investment that is beneficial to them. However, after reviewing President Trump’s current initiatives in his budget proposal, these cuts are an apparent attack and atrocity to working class Americans, seniors, students, teachers and residents of every community. Alongside my constituents I paid attention during the last campaign cycle and listened to the roaring rhetoric of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump who founded his campaign on “America First” and “Make America Great Again”. He pledged to preserve Medicaid and Social Security yet this budget proposal reflects differently –there is nothing great or American about this proposal. As Americans we pride ourselves for being servants of others and helping our neighbors. Well from one American to another, I do not see how this budget plan is positioning us for investment in our local communities across the nation. The focus should remain on finding solutions to better educate, protect the health and wellness of all Americans, provide economic stability with job creation, and allow the social safety net to protect the most vulnerable in our communities at all times. Once again, the president broke his promise, “there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid,” which he tweeted in May 2015. The recent budget proposal from the Trump administration provides drastic cuts to Medicaid spending by $610 billion over 10 years. The proposal would also cut Social Security Disability Insurance, which covers approximately 10 million people. The Administration went as far as decreasing funding for Meals on Wheels, a program which many seniors enjoy and benefit from weekly.
MAY 26, 2017
Additionally, families that benefited from SNAP will be impacted, the budget would shift $116 million to states. Another promise broken once again by President Trump, “The well-being of the American citizen and worker will be placed second to none….” I have no clear understanding of how we plan to promote an investment in our younger and current generation’s future if we plan to take away opportunities for them to receive education and job training. This is a dangerous assault on public education. Whether in the form of tax credits, vouchers, or so-called educational savings accounts, Secretary DeVos and this administration will use any means necessary to advance the for-profit privatization of our children’s’ education at the expense of millions of students from pre-school through college and beyond. Instead of giving public schools and our teachers the resources and professional development services they need to provide our children with excellent, high-quality education, the proposed budget would slash more than 22 important educational programs. And the budget would severely slash college affordability programs like the Pell Grant and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program which provides a strong incentive for students to commit to 10 years of public service as public defenders, social workers, etc. These cuts would eliminate class-size reduction efforts, physical education, music and art programs, teacher training, and additional important student and teacher services. President Trump made promises to fight for working class families, seniors, students, and individuals who want a competitive advantage in America so I would strongly urge my colleagues on the other side to oppose his proposal. And in the meantime I will work to ensure every child has access to a high-quality, affordable public education, that seniors are not forgotten and left struggling, and that students have a competitive advantage in the work force.
Statement on President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Proposal
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Johnson released the following statement on President Trump’s Budget Proposal for fiscal year 2018. “The President’s Budget Proposal for fiscal year 2018 is a far cry from the promises he made to work on behalf of all Americans. Instead, the President and his administration propose a bud-
get that provides an abundance of unnecessary and untenable tax cuts to powerful corporations and wealthy individuals, while jeopardizing the future of hard-working families. Critical investments in our nation’s infrastructure are still desperately needed. Yet, the President’s FY18 budget proposal seeks instead to slash funding for important programs such as Capital Investment Grants, effectively killing 56 transit projects that are currently in the pipeline such as DART’s D2 Alignment Project and the Red and Blue Line Platform Extension Project. His budget would also eliminate the highly-successful TIGER discretionary grant program. This is a terrible proposal that does not reflect the needs of our nation. The security of our nation is founded upon a strong economy and the future of our nation rests in our investments in education. The President’s budget steals billions of dollars from critical job-creating investments in infrastructure, innovation and clean energy. It features unprecedented cuts to programs designed to revitalize communities and generate broad-based prosperity. Instead of giving public schools and our teachers the resources and professional development services they need to provide our children with excellent, high-quality education, the proposed budget would severely slash more than 22 important educational programs. Drastic cuts to Social Security Disability Insurance, and Medicaid would undermine coverage for millions of Americans, and abandons our most vulnerable citizens including the elderly, Americans with disabilities, and our children. We simply cannot afford a budget that hollows out our economy, ransacks our investments in jobs, undermines basic living standards and strips funding for public education. We must continue to work together to ensure that all Americans are protected and not forgotten while we seek growth and a competitive advantage in the workforce.
Condemning Threats Made Against Rep. Al Green WASHINGTON, D.C. –“I stand with the entire Texas Democratic Delegation and condemn the attacks on our colleague, Congressman Al Green,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Many of these threats are racist in tone and are too disturbing to repeat. We stand with our friend and against the violent threats made against him and his family that are not just despicable –they are criminal. We hope law enforcement is able to uncover the perpetrators.”

CeCe Winans and Son Collaborate on Latest Project: “Let Them Fall in Love” THE INTERVIEW By Arielle Johnson
We are very excited about the highly anticipated release of Cece Winans' latest project - “Let Them Fall in Love.” It has been almost Arielle Johnson exactly 9 years since her previous album release “Thy Kingdom Come,” which was released on April 1, 2008. Many of Cece Winans fans are probably accustomed to Cece releasing an album, on average, every one to two years, therefore we were curious about why she was absent from the studio recording aspect of the gospel business, for so long. As you may or may not already know, Cece Winans and her husband Alvin Love, II, are pastors of the Nashville Life Church in Nashville, Tennessee. The church was established five years ago and recently celebrated its five year anniversary several months ago. Cece smiles as she speaks proudly of their church and parishioners, as her and her husband have made walking the walk of Jesus Christ a big priority, by making outreach to the surrounding community and Christian living education, top priorities in their ministry. Quite naturally, this fairly new responsibility of co-pastoring of the church, has caused her to step away somewhat from the recording studio. Cece mentioned, sometimes the vocal strength required for a new recording project, just was not there, as her vocals were constantly being taxed by co-casting with her husband and making guest speaker presentations at numerous conferences. On top of all this, Cece continued to minister through song. On one recent occasion, Cece recalls the harrowing experience of losing her voice altogether. However, as foreboding as the prospect of starting and completing a new project within a reasonable length of time may have been, Cece realized she had to return to the studio, as she was being called on by God, to use her gift of music, to inspire others through song. The idea of putting together another

studio album actually came up six years ago, slayed on the track, only to be told by her when Cece's son, Alvin Love, III, presented son to re-record, because he felt she could some songs he produced do better. It was hard for to his mother. Initially, she her not to ask her son, was a bit skeptical about if he had forgotten how the project, as many of the established she already songs, which have now was in the gospel world, been etched in history as when these moments part of the wonderful “Let came about, but Cece's Them Fall in Love” album, son proved to be just as were played for her. tough as his Mom by They were definitely stating, they would be somewhat of a reconnecting with her departure from what she old listeners and gaining had done previously. She new ones. wondered how she would Without revealing connect with her previous too much about the “Let fans, with a sound and style Them Fall in Love” projthey were not accustomed ect, which was released to hearing from her. Alvin's under the PureSprings CeCe Winans response to his mother's Gospel/EMI Gospel Photo Credit: Jeremy Cowart reservations was articulated Label, we will just say, Cece in so many words, as they and her son Alvin Love, III dialogued about the task ahead, “Look nailed it. Mom...with social media, the music industry They compiled songs which capture the in general has changed, and by compiling an sound of the Motown era in music composialbum with a variety of styles, you'll be able tion, mixed in with some of that footto recapture the hearts of your loyal supstomping and side to side rocking of oneself porters, and attract the attention of younger in the church pews, old-fashioned tradiaudiences who may not know much about tional style gospel music, and then iced that Cece Winans.” lovely cake with a few worship songs and That conversation took place six years ago, contemporary uptempo gospel to round it but it would take Cece another three years all out. This compilation lacks nothing in to figure out, how to balance numerous its musical arrangement or lyrics, also vocal commitments to her church and a number of different organizations, with a new project. The day finally came when Cece was mentally and spiritually prepared to record, knowing everything was in full balance. She had most of the songs, but a few more were needed to round out the “Let Them Fall in Love” project, which debuted on February 3, 2017. Of course we had to ask Cece what it was like working with the man she birthed into this world, and what we heard was somewhat side-splitting on the humor side of things. She mentioned how she was not able to pull the “I'm Your Mother” card on her son, as he was only interested in getting the best from his Mom. There were many times she was asked to re-record notes she knew she had just

and instrumental riffs abound. For Cece, producing this project was easy, as it was merely delivering examples through song, of the life she is already living. Here is a very personalized categorization of the songs on the “Let Them Fall in Love” project: 'He's Never Failed Me Yet', 'Run to Him', Hey Devil' (Motown Era Sound), 'Why Me' – (Worship Music with a taste of Country Gospel), 'Lowly' – (early 70's guitar and piano playing style), 'Never Have to Be Alone' (Contemporary Worship Music), 'Dancing In the Spirit' (Contemporary Uptempo Praise Music), 'Marvelous' (Worship Music) and 'Let Them Fall in Love' (Contemporary Worship Music). Cece Winans will be performing at the Majestic Theater on Elm Street in Dallas, next week Friday, June 2nd as part of her 9 city tour, sponsored in part by Medi-Share. If you would like to keep up with details about her tour and support her latest project, “Let Them Fall in Love”, be sure to follow Cece on Instagram and Twitter @cecewinans You may also “LIKE” her 'Official Cece Winans' facebook page, where Cece says she will begin documenting her tour, and connecting with her supporters old and new through Facebook Live.

62 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY
Why Should Tennell Atkins Return to City Hall By Robin Finch Tennell Atkins, former Mayor Pro Tem and four-term City Councilman, is seeking to regain his District 8 seat and complete the good work he started, but left undone by his opponent. Mr. Atkins’ reelection to City Council means that District 8’s residents will have, once again, the voice of a true advocate who is willing to fight for their family and community needs, rather than engage as a lackadaisical figure head who supports the dominant positions of current city leadership. Tennell Atkins is a proven public servant who, for eight years ably served the residents and interests of District 8. Gail Terrell, former 2017 City Council District 8 candidate, agrees "I am supporting Tennell Atkins for Dallas City Council, District 8. I have worked with Tennell for more than 10-years and believe he will better serve the needs of the residents in Southeast Oak Cliff and District 8. Tennell has my support and vote." Mr. Atkin’s personal authenticity built meaningful relationships with his constituents, while his hard work achieved measurable economic progress and significant community improvements that earned him the respect and admiration of long-trusted community leaders such as former Dallas Police Chief David Brown, the Dallas Police and Fire Fighters Associations, Honorable Charles Rose, Clara McDade, Sabrina Brenham, and former City Councilwoman Carolyn Davis. As Mayor Pro Tem and District 8 City Councilman, Atkins’ efforts brought Save-a-Lot grocery store to MAY 26, 2017
the residents of the Highland Hills area after a 20 year absence. Now its residents can purchase fresh meat and produce within their own community. In the 2012 bond package, Atkins secured funding to renovate nearly 300 miles of streets and alleys for the City of Dallas. He worked with the residents, members of the Parks and Recreation and Perkins & Will’s architectural team to ensure that the development of the Singing Hills Recreation Center represented the needs of the community. It is unfortunate that once he left office the new councilman did not follow through with the completion of a much needed community gym, a gym that would provide the residents a place to go after school, during the summer and on weekends. Through the same bond package, Atkins along with other City Councilmembers brought a horse park to the Pleasant Grove area. The park sits on the southern edge of the Trinity River Corridor situated in a forested area that offers visitors a beautiful fishing pond, prairie vistas lush with native grasses and trees, four miles of soft surface forest riding trails, and parking facilities for horse trailers. The Department of Public Works completed the design for the re-alignment of Wheatland Road between University Hills Boulevard and Lancaster Road. There were two potential projects in the planning stages for District 8, but have remained in the planning stages. To move forward, District 8 will need significant public infrastructure investment utilizing $5 million which was approved in the 2012 bond package and $5.2 million
that was approved in the 2006 bond program for the Wheatland Road realignment. Tennell Atkins is more than a political candidate in a city council runoff election; he is one of Dallas’ own and a life-long resident of District 8. Mr. Atkins is intimately familiar with the challenges its families and businesses faced over the last 40-years, and has fought tirelessly to improve access and quality of education, increased economic development and jobs, infrastructure, community cooperation, and crime prevention and homelessness. "We need a leader who can fight for us with untied hands. Tennell Atkins, I believe will tackle the hard issues of police reform, homelessness, economic development and toxic lead in our schools’ water. These are issues we have agreed are central to the constituents.” stated Eric Williams,
issuu.com/bitsandpieces
former 2017 candidate for Dallas City Council, District 8. If the measure of a candidate can be judged by their prior accomplishments, the quality of their endorsements, and the grass-roots nature of their election campaign, Tennell Atkins beats all measures and should return to City Hall as City Councilman for District 8. Get out and support Tennell Atkins for District 8 City Councilman to finish the job left undone. Vote for a leader you know, a leader you trust.

For the Fame or Love by Joslyn Mitchell For African Americans, it is often hard for us to find where we fit in or what career works for us. The most common dream career for an African American male is to be a professional athlete. 70 percent of the NFL is made of Black men and 74.4 percent of the NBA is made of black men. The most common dream for African American women is to be happily married. 49 percent of college- educated women marry an educated black man compared to the 84 percent that marry interracially. In the 21st century, African Americans are decomposing into their own sorrows and troubles. Troubles of not having a back-up plan after realizing pro ball is not in the picture, sorrows of realizing it may be a while before Mr. right comes. The black neighborhoods are the holy grail of crimes; from drugs, to murder, and
MAY 26, 2017
then robbery. According to the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), in 2014, black males made up 1 million of the 2.3 million incarcerated males. What is there to do to help the lost souls of this race? One woman is taking a stand against violence in the black communities through her plays, yes plays. Dona Mitchell has been writing, directing, and producing her own stage productions in the DFW area since before the year 2000. Her plays mainly focus on the crimes and struggles that goes on in the black neighborhoods and how they just need to be heard. She has written plays including; “HIV/AIDS on the Rise”, “Child Abandonment,” “Break the Streets On Youth Crime,” a short film, “Aids in the Hood,” and many more. She has joined forces with the NAACP and the National AIDS Foundation for National AIDS day. She
is also the director over the youth drama ministry at Concord Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Mitchell has been a voice for the black community and giving them hope for over 20 years and when asked what is next to come, her response was, “Stay tuned I am just getting started.” “I have always had a need to help my community, I feel like it is an obligation for me to help them.” She said. Dona Mitchell developed a new program last summer, “Project Under” bringing awareness around those that are disenfranchised an downtrodden to include the unsheltered homeless people to stay hydrated for the summer. Over 3000 bottles of water were donated to her project. “I don’t do it for recognition I do it because it is my calling to help people in need.” Questions are probably raised if she is even human, but Mrs. Mitchell is every bit of human just like you and I. “If more people
issuu.com/bitsandpieces
would take a stand and help our community we would be a better place.” Dona Mitchell is an icon for the community as well as the school as a Truancy Coordinator, turning the absence rate of Lancaster ISD around by contributing countless hours to bringing resources to the students with good attendance over the past years. Most people do it for fame, but because this one woman donating her life to help her community, she has touched many lives. Annually she has a program called, 'Break The Streets on Youth Crime,' changing the mindset of youth and bridging the gap between youth and law enforcement. Last summer she recorded a PSA on youth and law enforcement and preparing to record another one this summer. The PSAs are used as a tool to impact youth and law enforcement.

BASEBALL: Texas Southern wins SWAC championship in 13 innings
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University are headed back to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament after defeating Alabama State 4-2 in 13 innings Sunday to claim the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship. Gerrek Jimenez’ bases-loaded single in the top of the 13th proved to be the game-winning run as the Tigers (20-32) won their second conference championship in three seasons. Jimenez came into the game in the 12th inning as a defensive replacement, and knocked the game-winning hit in his only at-bat of the game and second of the entire tournament. Michael Villanueva pitched six shutout innings of relief to pick up his team-leading eighth win of the season. The freshman from Baytown, Texas, struck out three batters and allowed only two hits and walked two batters. Alabama State fell to 31-25 with the loss, the team’s only setback of the 2017 tournament. The Hornets were

attempting to defend their 2016 championship in a rematch of last year’s title game. Austin Bizzle, the SWAC’s Relief Pitcher of the Year, absorbed his first loss of the season (7-1). He retired the first nine batters he faced before giving up a leadoff double to Jose Camacho in the 13th. Camacho’s leadoff double in the 13th ended a run of 20 consecutive batters retired by Bizzle and ASU starter Tyler Howe, who pitched the first nine innings of the game. After the hit, Gaudencio Lucca was hit by a pitch to give the Tigers runners on first and second with no outs. Bizzle got a groundball straight back to the mound from Kamren Dukes, setting up the force out of Camacho at third base. However, the attempt to get Dukes on the double play at third failed when Ray Hernandez’ throw was low, allowing Lucca and Dukes an extra base, giving the Tigers two runners in scoring position. The Hornets opted to give Blake Hicks an intentional

walk to set up the force play, but Jimenez showed no rust or nerves as he knocked a single to left field to score Lucca. TSU added another run when Jose Cabreja knocked a shallow fly ball that was just out of reach of the rightfielder, scoring Dukes. The play was ruled an infield fly, meaning Cabreja was called out, but Dukes still had enough time to score. Hicks had knocked in the first run in the top of the first inning, hitting a single after Howe walked three consecutive batters. Christian Sanchez, who was later named the tournament MVP, added an RBI double in the fourth inning to score Hicks. ASU got on the board in the bottom of fourth with Gustavo Rios’ RBI single. Cage Cox tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff homerun. TSU starting pitcher Anthony Martinez pitched seven innings, striking out four batters. Villanueva, Lucca, and Martinez were all named to the All-Tournament team.
