Celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month America is known as a melting pot of cultures. People from all over the world flock to our great nation in search for better opportunities U.S. Rep Eddie and in pursuit of the Bernice Johnson “American Dream.” During the month of June, we celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month and honor the country’s rich history as a nation of immigrants. Many of the businesses and our infrastructure in the Dallas community have been built by the hands of our immigrant friends and family members. And our nation was founded at the hands of immigrants who were seeking life in a new land. In the wake of President Trump’s many attempts to restrict travel from six predominantly Muslim countries by executive order, we must realize that shutting the doors on immigrants would be doing a disservice to our country. Immigrants have consistently enriched this country by sharing their diverse experiences and traditions. They continually work hard in all aspects of their lives in order to solidify a strong foundation in America. Their dedication to themselves and the broader community has proved to be beneficial for us all. Fortunately, the federal courts also see the value of immigrants in America, and have consistently ruled the President’s travel ban as unconstitutional. Most recently, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals refused to reinstate the administration’s original executive order from February. I would encourage President Trump, as well as my Republican colleagues, to open their minds and hearts to the value of immigrants in America. While I am not aware of the next acISSUU.COM/BITSANDPIECES

tion(s) that the President would like to enact, I only hope that he ponders on how discriminating against a group of people based on their race or religion ultimately divides humanity and families. And that his most previous approach only takes away economic and research development for future innovation to occur in Texas and our nation in order to advance. In Dallas, we have opened our doors to refugees fleeing war, persecution, violence, and poverty in their home country. I believe that everyone deserves peace and safety, no matter where they may come from. Luckily, there are various organizations throughout the Dallas area that recognize the need to provide safe spaces for refugees and immigrants. My office has worked closely with the Islamic Association of North Texas, Faith Forward at Thanksgiving Square, International Rescue Committee and others. These establishments seek to help refugees and immigrants whose lives may have been altered by conflict or disaster. Thus the Dallas community has prospered due to the positive con-

tributions of immigrants and refugees. Immigrant Heritage Month allows us to reflect on the contributions that immigrants have provided to our great country. It is also a reminder that we should continue the American tradition of welcoming and supporting immigrants. Immigrants and refugees have the same goal as many of us: they want to build a better life for themselves and their families. We should all be willing to aid them in that pursuit, no matter their religion, nationality, or race. I remain committed to upholding the American tradition of accepting all people. I will continue to create and implement solutions for those who may flee their own country due to religious persecution, lack of financial stability, their safety, or the threat of human trafficking, with the hope to find solace and balance in America. Furthermore, I will continue my efforts in fighting for comprehensive immigration reform and preserve the values and opportunities to succeed in our nation.

Chopping It Up With Omar Gooding at Bob’s Steak and Chop House THE INTERVIEW Omar Gooding landed in town earlier this week, and yes....local journalists and paparazzi lost their minds. By Arielle Johnson The scene occurred at Bob’s Steak and Chop House at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Dallas. Terry Allen, the Founder of City Men Cook and publicist, was kind enough to invite Elite News in on the action, and we were delighted to descend upon the scene just as soon as we got the word. Omar Gooding is one of the stars of Bounce TV’s show, Family Time, and due to the popularity of the show, Bounce TV will be airing shows for a 5th season later on this year. The press conference took place in a remote area of the Bob’s Steak and Chop House, and was very private. When Omar Gooding stepped in, he wore a very bright

But Omar seemed to be most his father, Cuba Gooding, Sr.

Omar told us keeping himself occupied has helped him tremendously with the grieving process, which for him is an ongoing process. Also, he mentioned his mother taught him at an earlier age to pray through whatever he is experiencing in life. And although you and I may not consider his castmates as being close family members, he says they are; they are his family away from home. Every member of the cast goes out of their way to make sure he is in good spirits and focused. We met with Omar on Monday; by Tuesday, he was participating in a free Q & A mentoring session for aspiring actors, which was held in Fair Park. Omar Gooding, has had a successful career that has spanned 25 years; we hope to see him go another 25 with even more successes in his personal career and more of mentoring sessions. Omar says he wants to challenge today’s youth to be more creative, and original with their music composition, acting and writing styles.

South Dallas Business Owners Are On Way to Eradicating Crime With New Plan By Arielle Johnson It has only been two weeks since Elite News attended the first meeting held by South Dallas Business Owners, at the 16th Street Initiative located at the corner of Malcolm X and Elsie Faye Heggens. However, within that short period of time, we are proud to announce change is already taking place, and not a single bit of steam has been lost on this locomotive pushing through South Dallas. Urban specialist, Antong Lucky, was happy to provide feedback on the progress they have witnessed to date. At least 75% percent of the participants who attended the initial meeting on May 30th, returned last night to the follow up meeting. Also, some new participants, just to name a few were: Chief of Police for the S.E. Dallas area – Vernon Hale, several parole officers, whose names unfortu-

As we mentioned in the previous article, entitled “South Dallas Business Owners Gather to Address the Violence” which was published in the May 31, 2017 issue of Elite News, and is now available on our site at www.EliteNewsOne.com the meeting attendees left with a plan of action to follow, therefore they were prepared to provide feedback to us when we reached out to them today. 85% of the affidavits supplied to the business owners for criminal trespassing were completed and returned to the city to be placed on file, the 16th Street Initiative has decided to buy their own no trespassing and no loitering signs to the business owners in the area, Probation and Parole officers will work with police officers and the 16th Street Initiative to create a database of community violators through neighborhood roundups, and make part of their sentencing when convicted of crim-

Also, although there was no 911 call report available to discuss with last night's group of supporters and activists for change, there were several neighborhood officers there, to attest to the significant reduction in violence since the group's initial meeting. Since Tuesday night's meeting, Antong Lucky says he has also met with Lieutenant Glover, who is in charge of Neighborhood policing, and has stated, he will get the 16th Street Initiative a Police Tower and a Police Car. We are excited to deliver this A+ report card for the 16th Street Initiative. BY ARIELLE JOHNSON

We here at Elite News, try our best to be as objective as possible when reporting the news. Therefore, we felt it was absolutely necessary, to make an attempt to reach out to all of the District Councilmen, who have been elected as of June 10, 2017, to represent our newspaper’s coverage areas - Districts 4, 7 and 8. Ideally, it would have been wonderful to speak directly to each of the new incumbents, of their future plans, in terms of addressing the concerns of their constituents. However, we were only able to reach one, Councilman Tennell Atkins. Councilman Atkins has District 4, and was happy to let us know he and his team, are working on putting on community meetings within the various communities, the district serves. Keep in mind, Councilman

Tennell Atkins

Atkins, has an enormous area to cover (63 acres), but he has already tackled this issue, by suggesting these community meetings take place in several of the district’s densely populated areas - Red Bird Mall, Highland Hills and Pleasant Grove. The plan is to listen to the community and allow them to tell him what issues need to be addressed and how. In turn, Councilman Atkins, will be prepared to enlighten those who need enlightenment, about what infrastructural changes are needed, to implement some of the changes the community feels it may be running out of time to

resolve. . For anyone wanting to reach out to Councilman Atkins, before these meetings take place, he told me to publish his number. So please give him a call, and tell him what you want! One of our writers told the councilman she needs a Maserati, and instead of dismissing her altogether, he said, he will come into the community and direct those wanting

Before closing, congratulations are in order for Councilmen Omar Narvaez of District 8 and Kevin Felder of District 7. A special shout out to Councilman Felder for making it to the 16th Street Initiative offices in District 7 this week, to find out how he may be of service to them, to help with the reduction of the crime rate within the Elsie Faye Heggens & Malcolm X area of his district.

Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon Fundraiser

By Arielle Johnson This coming Saturday, June 17, 2017, the Don't Believe the Hype Foundation will be having its 23rd Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser. The organization's founder, Cheryl Smith, a wellknown journalist, started the foundation to assist economically-disadvantaged youth, who have big dreams, but need financial assistance to bring those dreams to fruition. In the Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon's 23 years of existence, it has been able to provide over $300,000 dollars in scholarships to both youth and adults. The idea of creating a "Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon" type of event, according to Smith, came about through her desire to bring together a group of wellknown, successful, business men and women, local to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for the sheer purpose of literally having a ball. Their lives are already busy, but there is nothing wrong, with having some fun to relieve, some of the stress of their jobs. This year, Senator Royce West, Judges Ingrid Warren and Amber Givens Davis, Hiawatha Williams of Williams Chicken Fame, Commissioner John Wiley Price, 97.9 The Beat radio personality - Veda Loca, gospel recording artist Keyondra Lockett, 105.7’s Lynne Haze and KJ, radio personality Hollywood Hernandez, NFL Greats Bethel Johnson and Dante Wesley, Elite News Publisher Debra Blair-Abron, and many more celebrities and public figures will be participating to raise funds for the Don't Believe the Hype Foundation. Recommended for ages 5 and up

The beautiful Zimbabwe-based Cinderella tale returns! An African villager named Mufaro has two daughters whom everyone agrees are beautiful. But, they have their differences. Manyara possesses a bad temper and is selfcentered (but never in front of Mufaro); Nyasha is kind and considerate to people and to animals. When Mufaro learns that the King is in the process of meeting all of the most worthy and beautiful women in order to choose a wife, he decides that both of his daughters should go. Celebrate goodness, generosity, and love with traditional dancing, rhythmic drumming, and glorious African song. Based on the 1988 Caldecott Honor Award book.
