2 lbs frozen peach slices 1 cup water ½ cup pure cane sugar ½ tsp nutmeg 1 tsp cinnamon ¼ ginger 8 tbsp coconut oil 9 raw tortillas (found in the refrigerated area) *1/2 tsp cinnamon mixed with 2 tbsp pure cane sugar in a small bowl and set to the side to top the cobbler * I used a 9x13 glass dish to bake mine in.
1. First, in a pot mix the peaches, water, sugar, coconut oil, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, and let this come to a low simmer for about 20 minutes. 2. While the peaches are simmering mix the ½ tsp cinnamon and 2 tbsp sugar in a small bowl. 3. Next, lay 3 of the raw tortillas on the bottom of the pan. 4. Next, spoon half the peach mixture on top of the bottom tortilla layer. 5. Next, lay 3 more tortillas on top of the bottom layer and spoon the other half of the peach mixture over them. 6. Next, tear the last 3 tortillas and lay them on top and glaze some of the peach mixture juice over the top of the tortillas 7. Then, sprinkle the cinnamon/sugar mix on top. 8. Last, put the pan in the oven to bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or it is golden brown on the top.

This recipe is for all my peach cobbler fans!
As a young girl, I can remember my grandmother making peach cobbler and it was my favorite dessert of hers from the first time I ate some! Since then, peach cobbler has always been one of my favorite desserts. As I have gotten older and more health conscious I have not enjoyed as many of my favorite desserts including peach cobbler. My son deciding to eat more vegan has inspired me to re-create these favorite dishes of mine and even more! Peach cobbler is one of them that I wanted to share because it has the delicious taste, but healthier and I feel guilt free eating it! Sometimes, we even eat it for breakfast! courtesy of Leslie White

Johnson hosts Annual Youth Crime Prevention Summit
Response to Former FBI Director Mueller’s Appointment as Special Prosecutor
U.S. Rep Eddie Bernice Johnson
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson hosted the Annual Youth Crime Prevention Summit at the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center in Dallas, TX. The Summit brought together students from vulnerable and underserved populations in Dallas and local members of law enforcement, county judges, community/business leaders: Each year, after schools release their students for summer break, a traditional increase in youth related crimes occurs. This spike is often attributed to a lack of constructive outlets summer activities or programs for vulnerable youth. This year’s theme, “R.E.S.P.E.C.T. to Stay Safe, Survive, and Thrive” drove the summit’s discussion on crime deterrents, dispute resolution tactics, community programs, and constructive activities students can participate in throughout the summer months. Due to legislative obligations Congresswoman Johnson greeted the audience digitally, with a prerecorded video. In her remarks, she emphasized the importance of making positive choices. “Today is all about cultivating your leadership skills, surrounding you with the right people, and helping you to avoid situations that might lead you down the wrong path,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “And believe me, there are many situations you will find yourselves in life where the opportunity to make the wrong choice is easy.” “Opportunity is constantly knocking at our
door. It is up to you whether to open that door and walk through the threshold to achieve your full potential. That means making the right decisions and it all begins with your choice. My hope is that you will leave here today with a better understanding of how to surround yourselves with the right people, how to equip yourselves with the right tools to make sound decisions, and how to channel your energy to do good for your community.” The program concluded with a Q&A session from students to the panelists, thereafter. A special thank you to members of the Dallas Police Department, the Sheriff ’s Department, our judges, Corps of Engineers, Ms. Pemberton, Mr. McGuire, Mr. Ewell, and Pastor Marsh for your participation and in guiding the youth from our community today.
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement in response to former FBI Director Robert Mueller’s appointment as special prosecutor: “I welcome the U.S. Department of Justice’s appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to oversee any investigations into potential ties between President Trump, his administration, and Russian operatives. Mr. Mueller has an impeccable reputation as being impartial and nonpartisan, and has served our country well under both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. As I have stated in the past, appointing a special prosecutor to investigate any allegations of wrongdoing has been long overdue and it will be important for Mr. Mueller to have complete independence and the proper resources to lead this investigation.” “President Trump’s desire to wish this investigation away has no credibility in our democratic system. This is a very serious matter that commands our utmost respect for the rule of law, and appointing a special prosecutor will demonstrate to the American people that this government has no interest in undermining the credibility of the White House, the U.S. Department of Justice, FBI, or the law of the land. “

THE INTERVIEW: So You Want to Shoot Videos? By Arielle Johnson Everywhere you look, there are videos all over the place. Just check your Instagram, Arielle Johnson Facebook and Twitter. We're pretty sure if you have the courage to step away from your social media accounts for at least an hour or two, when you come back, there will be a ton of interesting footage there, with the power to make you dab the corners of your eyes with a few pieces of tissue, or bust out laughing, wherever you are, from the sheer crassness of it all. But let's face it; many of these videos are being recorded on people's personal mobile phones and they are simply doing this for “LIKES” and shares. The more reposts and likes they get, the better their chances of their recording going VIRAL and them getting their 5 minutes of fame on t.v. and social media. However, some people have actually carved out their niche in this business of recording, by becoming professionals at what they do. Derric Taylor, the C.E.O. of North Texas Media Group has carved a rather decent living out of becoming an expert in the field of Radio and Television Communications. Mr. Taylor majored in Communications at Prairieview, and attended from 1988-1992. In fact, it was here, where he learned how to add another valuable edge to the business he was developing – Editing. Quite often, when a cameraman comes out to record your event, he or she later passes the footage on to someone who edits the material and helps package it, before it is sent to the client for their approval. Sometimes further editing is required, meaning additional hours are invested in cleaning up the raw footage, resulting in additional fees being billed to the client by the editor. NTMG does not hire outside editors to finish the job. Editing is simply another one of the services offered by the group. The story behind what sparked Derric's

What's the next big thing for Derric and the North Texas Media Group and what are some of the challenges? We are actually shooting our first movie and I have been conducting the casting calls. I am dealing with a wide range of personalities, with a bunch of different demands, i.e. agents, managers, specialists, sponsors etc. Actors and actresses keep an entourage of folks around them. In this situation, I have to focus on my main client, the person whose life story I have been hired to tell. I also have to protect my client from the sharks out there, who smell the money, from the bigger budget we are dealing with, and start offering a bunch of services the are incapable of delivering on. What services are offered by North Texas Media Group? Commercials, Video, Animations, Logo Development, Voiceovers, Audio, Photography, Mobile App Development, Editing. 62 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY
South Dallas Business Owners Gather to Address the Violence By Arielle Johnson
Several days ago, the Elite News received an email from one of its community partners, about an emergency meeting being called in South Dallas, to address the rash of senseless shootings and violent attacks against this seemingly forgotten area of South Dallas. In recent local news, you may have heard of the night a number of different drivers gathered in the middle of Elsie Faye Heggins and Malcolm X Blvd, making donuts in the street with their cars. This dangerous car stunt show went on for approximately 30 minutes before the police arrived, and when they got there, business owners and residents were incensed. They wanted to know what in the hell took so long, as they felt as though their lives and their livelihood were in danger. This was the prevalent story in the news, but the more pressing issue was the senseless violence and the murders taking place in the same exact area. Last night's meeting was held at the 16th Street Initiative Offices, located at Elsie Faye Heggins and Malcolm X, the recent scene of the car donuting stunt show. Elite News arrived an hour and half ahead of the scheduled meeting time, with the intention of pulling the organizers of the meeting aside, to question them about their role in the community, the purpose of the 16th Street Initiative, future plans, and their expectations for the emergency meeting. By the way, all of the members of the 16th Street Initiative Offices describe themselves as being Urban Specialists when we started inquiring about their job within the organization. Kelvin McGee was one of the first specialists we spoke with, who shared with us, his approach to fixing the inherent and somewhat inherited problems of the area. He says he canvasses the area regularly to assess the needs of the community, but the true assessment begins with the local schools within the Dallas Independent School District. It has been through his encounters the children and the youth, Mr. McGee is able to paint a vivid picture for anyone proposing any plans to solve the community's existing problems. Mr. McGee serves as a liason between the schools and the students' homes, for behaviorals and at risk students, which allows him to see first hand, what sorts of

In theory, after speaking with the child's parents on scheduled home visits, and monitoring the child on a daily basis, the anticipation is a marked change in the child's behavior pattern, which leads to better interactions with their peers and teachers, ultimately, setting the stage for a Tabitha Wheeler on the left, Business Owner of Tabu's Car Title Company and Jill more produc- Haning, DA Prosecutor and Member of the Community Prosecution Unit tive child in naturally, we had to question him about classroom and within the community. wasting away while we wait for solutions. As time began to wind down, we all began to prepare for the meeting as people started to pour into the offices. Seats began to fill up quickly, and those who arrived a few minutes late, found themselves standing for the duration of the meeting. We opened up the meeting with a prayer from Pastor Mark Murrell about rebuilding the community, accountability and taking the action necessary to implement suggested solutions, then we quickly went around the room introducing ourselves. All the major players necessary for change were present – local business owners, prosecutors, pastors, judges, code enforcement officers, local police officers and the DA's Communications Director/ Spokesperson. Tabitha Wheeler, a local business owner of a Title Company and several other businesses, was instrumental in suggesting the 16th Street Intiative invite Jill Haning in, from the District Attorney's Community Prosecution unit, to discuss how they were successful, with stopping the violence and criminal activity on Lamar Street. Ms. Haning patiently allowed business owners to vent about the lack of an immediate response or even sensitivity from police officers, when very volatile situations present themselves in the community. Quite frankly, at one point during the meeting, there was a very heated exchange which took place between one of the officers, and one of the business owners. The exchange was concerning how 911 calls were even prioritized. Aside from this concern, one of the police officers in attendance, raised a concern about youth, being inculcated at an early age, with negative images of police officers, due to violent encounters between officers and their families. As an imaginary line of demarcation started to be drawn between the officers and prosecutors in the room, and the business owners, those who were in between in terms of their affiliation, began to choose sides. Eventually we found ourselves staring down a developing impasse, as one of the business owners pleaded with police officers, to get the community the help it needs, because too many young people are dying. The exchange was emotional and intense and

required constant interjection from everyone in attendance to remind us all, we need to listen to each other to fix the problem. Jill Haning, one of Pastor/Judge Mark Murrell's proteges, stepped out of the seating area and approached the front of the room, in the midst of the what was becoming an impasse between business owners and law enforcement, and was reintroduced to the everyone present, as someone who was problem solver, and has already had success fixing Lamar. Ms. Haning briefly presented the Lamar problem and plans which were implemented, which drastically reduced the number of crimes taking place in this area. Her suggested solutions were prefaced with the fact that the problem the community is being faced with, is the problem of the community, and although everyone is crying wolf in the meeting, the 911 call log shows rather scanty activity, if any at all at times, meaning there is no priority for the city to come in and fix things at the moment, because the community has not made alerting us a priority at the moment. Of course there was dissension from the majority of business owners, but ultimately, Ms. Haning got the attention she needed to present the ideas offered as solutions, and she reminded all in attendance, proposed solutions at this particular meeting may be different from future solutions, as we were meeting in a different community, with possibly different dynamics, and needed to come up with clear solutions for clearly identified problems. Additional suggestions were proposed by the attendees and added a 'To-Do List' which were later emailed to the group. Here are a few, listed in the order of importance: Business Owners should immediately start posting signage outside their businesses concerning Loitering, Criminal Trespassing, Parking Violations (which could lead to Towing), and their use of Security Cameras
6
Make sure business owners' Criminal Trespass Affidavits are in place Increase number of 911/311 calls being placed by business owners and residents and present a comparison log at the next meeting Get a Police Tower for the Area Develop Plan of Action for Night Court and Night Enforcement Meet again on June 13 at 5:30 p.m. and invite residents to the next meeting Tabitha Wheeler says she strongly believes Jill Haning can help them pull the community together, as she is no pushover, and has been groomed by Judge Mark Murrell himself. However, if we cannot pull this together on our own, eventually, the city will come in full force and shut this criminal activity down. Tabitha says as business owners, we have to remember the city has the power to file a Criminal Nuisance Abatement suit against them. In so many words, the business owner has a business, does nothing to abate the criminal activity taking place on his or her property, leading to physical harm or even death to persons, or a person on their property. Such cases have been tried, and once being sued, in some cases, the owners have had to pay cash to the Plaintiff or their family. As the meeting was closed out with prayer, we all left feeling a sense of promise for the proposed
ideas and the brain trust we formed by congregating at the 16th Street Initiative. Of course, the conclusion of the meeting was also another important aspect of the gathering, so Elite News checked in with a few business owners, before parting, for their opinion of the overall meeting. One business owner told me he was going to make some signs that night, to used the following day to address Loitering. His belief is there should be no hanging out around his business if the individual is not spending any money with him. Another business owner stated he feels as though the group is on the right track, in terms of their making their priority the installation of security cameras and patrolling off-duty officers, but to keep the problem from returning to the community, a conversation has to start taking place regularly about home ownership and commercial property ownership. Owners will take more pride in their community and protect their interests, thereby benefiting everyone within their community. Ebenezer Memorial Missionary Baptist Church Ebenezer Memorial Missionary Baptist Church began kingdom building on January 16, 1981, and the Lord has had His hand of grace, mercy and favor upon them from then until now. Initially, by the grace of God, three founders – Audrey Rollins, Deacon Jerome Sands and Charles Cook- sought God’s help in organizing, developing, and uniting a group of believers who had a mind to work. Shortly thereafter, the blessings began to flow in September of 1981 with the selection of Rev. A. D. Smith as pastor. At that time Rev. A. D. Smith was a young man with vision and vigor. His vision led to the purchase and building of three churches and the vigor to be instrumental throughout the entire process. The first was located on Blossom Lane, the second was erected on newly purchased land on Blossom Lane, and the third was erected on Buckner Boulevard. In 2000, the church erected an edifice with offices and classrooms on Blossom and

converted the pre-existing building into classrooms and two fellowship halls. Unexpectedly, through God’s favor in 2012, the WalMart Corporation desired that prime property for a Neighborhood Store. After much praying and negotiating, Ebenezer moved to a temporary building on Jim Miller Road. While sojourning there, Ebenezer observed a Ground Breaking Ceremony on September 12, 2015 for the envisioned building, which signaled progress toward the vision. Just as the Israelites murmured about their stay in the wilderness, Ebenezer likewise murmured and gracious God answered. On June 4, 2017, Ebenezer observed their Entrance and Dedicatory Service with family, friends, and elected official witnessing, attesting, and congratulating them on God’s movement of grace, mercy, and favor. Rev. Smith and the entire Ebenezer family has seen many milestones in its 37 years, and it does not yet appear what shall be. Scripture: I Samuel 7:12

The beautiful Zimbabwe-based Cinderella tale returns! An African villager named Mufaro has two daughters whom everyone agrees are beautiful. But, they have their differences. Manyara possesses a bad temper and is selfcentered (but never in front of Mufaro); Nyasha is kind and considerate to people and to animals. When Mufaro learns that the King is in the process of meeting all of the most worthy and beautiful women in order to choose a wife, he decides that both of his daughters should go. Celebrate goodness, generosity, and love with traditional dancing, rhythmic drumming, and glorious African song. Based on the 1988 Caldecott Honor Award book.
