U.S. Rep. Johnson Releases Statement After House passes 4th Republican Continuing Resolution WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement after Members of the United States House of Representatives passed the 4th Continuing Resolution led by House Republicans, to keep the federal government funded through February 16th: “Once again, I am disappointed that Republicans have chosen to kick the can down the road. This is beyond embarrassing that the

Republican-controlled Congress cannot perform the one job that the American people have elected them to do,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “I voted ‘no’ in passing this resolution because it is irresponsible for this chamber to continually choose to fund the federal government on a month-tomonth basis. Despite maintaining a super majority, the GOP has failed to provide a long-term budget that will provide the certainty and funding we need to provide vital social services. “Families are impacted by our decisions as we push aside high priority and time sensitive issues that need immediate funding for results – the opioid epidemic,

community health centers, permanent reauthorization for CHIP, services for the senior population, and bipartisan support for the DREAM Act. This bill also harms the people of Texas by ignoring the urgent need for emergency disaster funding for those recovering from Hurricane Harvey last fall. Congresswoman Johnson continued to express her frustration, “this is irresponsible and not an effective way to govern.” “I hope when we find ourselves here again next month that the Republican-led Congress and Administration chooses to listen, compromise, and pass a long-term budget agreement.”

For Your Health

Eat Fat to Avoid Fat If you’re working on getting leaner, don’t cut out good, healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids. ] Lack of these nutrients can negatively impact the speed (and how) you age. To keep feeling and looking

younger, incorporate more oily fish, walnuts, and flax seeds into your diet, which also help the skin stay supple and wrinkle-free. Omega-3s also help boost brain health and keep the heart in good shape.

DCHHS reports three additional flu-related deaths of season 41st, 42 and 43rd cases

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is reporting three additional flu-related deaths in Dallas County totaling 43 flu-related deaths for the 2017-2018 season. The patients range in age from 53 to 93 and were residents of Grand Prairie and Dallas. All patients had high risk health conditions and died after complications from the seasonal flu. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS does not provide additional identifying information. “Staying home when you are sick and practicing good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands helps stop the spread of germs and prevents respiratory illnesses like the flu,” said Ganesh Shivamaiyer, DCHHS interim director. “If you have a high risk condition, remember to keep a safe distance from individuals who have flu like symptoms.” “Older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children and infants are more vulnerable to flu illness,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS health authority/medical director. “With influenza activity on the rise, individuals in these groups should take special precaution as we contin-

ue throughout the season.” Simple actions can be taken to help prevent the spread of seasonal influenza. If you haven’t done it already, protect yourself with a flu vaccination. Cover your cough with a tissue or cough into your sleeve. Wash your hands and keep your hands away from your face. Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or appear ill. Stay home if you are sick or keep family members home if they are sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for all persons aged 6 months and older, with rare exception. Individuals should discuss flu vaccine concerns with a health care provider. The flu vaccine DCHHS provides is an all-in-one shot that protects against multiple flu strains including the H1N1virus. The adult flu vaccine is given in the adult immunization clinic on the first floor at the DCHHS building located at 2377 N. Stemmons Frwy in Dallas. The children’s vaccine is available at all DCHHS immunization clinics. Clinic hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information call 214-819-2162

Wash Up Before Bed Don’t go to sleep without thoroughly washing your face. Over the course of the day your skin and pores collect dirt and oil. If you don’t wash it all off before you hit the hay, the dirt will clog

your pores overnight and you’ll wake up with irritated skin that is quite the opposite of a healthy, glowing complexion.

Preventing birth defects Each year nearly 120,000 babies, one in 33, are born with birth defects in the United States, according to estimates from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although January is Birth Defect Prevention Month, staff at Parkland Health & Hospital System is committed to empowering patients with the tools and resources necessary to experience healthy birth outcomes every day. Birth defects may affect how the body both works and looks. Defects develop while a baby grows in the womb, most often during the first three months of pregnancy. Some birth defects, like cleft lip, are easily visible, but others may require tests to diagnose. A diagnosis may occur during pregnancy, but in some cases it may come after the baby is born. Causes may include genetics, health conditions during pregnancy and/or lack of essential prenatal nutrients. “Awareness, education and regular healthcare are crucial factors in preventing birth defects,” said Deborah Lane, Community Action Network Coordinator with Dallas Healthy Start at Parkland. “Part of our mission is to provide this information to our patients and explain its importance.” Dallas Healthy Start is a Parkland program that seeks to reduce infant deaths, pre-term births, low-weight births and other health conditions. The program offers services in seven ZIP codes that have the highest rates of infant deaths in Dallas County and provides prenatal and parenting education, well baby care, food and housing assistance, among other services. “We educate our patients and explain that healthy pregnancies, healthy birth outcomes

and heathy lives all start with a plan. This outlined vision can be set in motion before a person is ready to start a family,” said Karla McCoy RN, BSN, MS, Community Programs Administrator, Women & Infants Specialty Health at Parkland and Dallas Healthy Start. Healthy Start and other organizations like the Texas Department of State Health Services encourage patients to use the ‘Someday Starts Now’ life-planning tool. Both women and men are encouraged to take the three-page survey. The tool asks about a person’s lifestyle, current and past health concerns, goals and plans to achieve them, and how children fit into their lives (now or in the future). After answering the questions, a patient can complete a section titled “Your life. Your plan.” “The goal of the survey is to provide patients a life plan unique to their wants and needs. It’s not about telling anyone what they need. It’s about giving them a choice and control of their lives,” said Martha Maldonado, Health Education Program Coordinator with Dallas Healthy Start. Maldonado said the tool could help prevent birth defects by allowing parents to become as healthy as they can. “It’s called pre-conception health. Its main goal is to help patients take care of their heath now, so their body is in a better state and better prepared to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy outcome,” she said. Patients thinking about their future children can take action now by quitting smoking, eating right, exercising, controlling their stress and visiting a primary care provider for annual exams, Maldonado added.

Centennial Negro Churches

My Day

By Dr. J. Ester Davis H o w m a n y Ne g ro churches do we have that are 100+ years old? How did they do it? Where in the city are they located? How did they survive and strive all of these years and live to celebrate it? Such a list can only aspire to being comprehensive, rather than claiming to be complete. But here lies an honest attempt to offer a brief glimpse into the prevailing religious and sustaining mood of the Negro Church. This is so very important to generations coming and going.

Upfront and foremost, I need your help to complete this list. So far this is what we have and not completely in order of years. “The Colored Church” is 165 years old. That is St. John Baptist Church, Royce City, Texas, which was founded around 1853. The current pastor is a dynamic young minister from South Dallas, Rev. Steven Gray. New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Rayford Terrell, Pastor, Joppa Community, is 135 years old. New Hope Baptist Church, Rev. Ron

Jones, Pastor, is 144 years old. Greater New Zion Baptist Church, Rev. Joe S. Patterson, is 143 years old. True Lee Baptist Church, Rev. Donald R. Parish,

Sr., celebrated their 108th year on Sunday, January 14, 2018. I was invited to the services alone with the Honorable Dwaine Caraway and Council Member Casey Thomas, City of Dallas. True Lee Baptist Church chronicled their journey via year starting with the migration of families from Palmer, Texas, as True Vine Baptist Church. Sidebar: While Rev. Parish was at the pulpit, he asked Sandra L. Jackson to come and speak. Ms. Jackson has deep roots and relatives in the church. Sandra L. Jackson was amazingly very comfortable at the church microphone. Her voice reminded me of another oratory speaking politician, Barbara Jordan, former

5

distinguished U. S. Congresswoman from Houston who also grew up in the church. After announcing her candidacy for Judge, 302nd District Court, she ended with her Christian journey, mentioning her father and the late Rev. Dr. J. K. Jones, her grandfather. The church replied in applause. Let me say the same thing that Rev. Parish said. . . ‘we need Christians in politics’. End of Sidebar. Mt. Horeb, Baptist Church, Rev. B. J. Bradford is 100 years old. The other names on the list so far are Salem Baptist Church, True Light and Munger Churches. Morningstar Church on Anderson Street, Progressive Church on Dolphin Road. Just a few but we know there are more. Again, we need your help. Let us hear from you. I Am an American: DACA By Kimberley Blair Pleasant Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA is a policy set in place to protect

Kimberley Blair Pleasant undocumented immigrants who entered the country before their 16th birthday and before June

2007, to receive a renewable twoyear work permit and exemption from deportation. DACA does confer non-immigrant legal status but does not provide a path to citizenship. The question of the DACA policy is now being put under scrutiny because the current administration is deporting immigrants that have been here in America for twenty-five plus years. These individuals have families, are viable citizens in their communities, hardworking, have committed no illegal acts, and are paying taxes in America. The question is why is this president not looking at all of these so- called criteria that should be good enough to allow an immigrant to stay in America? What is so GREAT about America if we have lost the ability to have a HEART when it comes to breaking Families

apart? Tearing children away from their parents seems so inhumane even for the Leader of the Free World! These individuals have proven they deserve to stay in America and continue to live as they have for years. The fate of almost 690,000 immigrants brought to America illegally by their parents under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is now in the hands of a president who seems to care nothing about anyone except those in his base.

We as Americans cannot allow these types of decisions to be carried out. If immigrants now, then who next?

We have to take a stand because there is nothing Great about living in a place where dictatorship Rules!

DA JOHNSON: HUMAN TRAFFICKING DEFENDANT GETS LIFE SENTENCE Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson announced that a judge has sentenced JASON STRICKLAND, 35, to a LIFE sentence after a jury found him guilty of HUMAN TRAFFICKING and SEXUAL ASSAULT. “January is human trafficking awareness month and it’s cases like these that remind us why this fight is so important,” said DA Johnson. “This outcome proves that the citizens of Dallas County take abuse as seriously as we do here at the DA’s Office.” DA Johnson also thanked the Dallas Police Department for their role in the investigation. As proven in court, in July 2015, Jason Strickland met a 15-year old online and told her she could run away to him. They made arrangements that she would get a ride from an accomplice, who took her to a hotel and had sex with her at Strickland’s direction and while he was listening. Accomplice then took her to the Greyhound bus station, where she started her trip to go live with Strickland. Her father found Strickland’s number and called it, causing Strickland to call her and tell her not to come. She was rescued in Birmingham,

Alabama. Strickland has a prior conviction for five counts of rape out of Oklahoma. He was arrested in Colorado for DWI and brought to Dallas to face charges in this case. “This defendant found this child in a dark place, the internet. He found her and seduced her to leave everything she knew to be with him. What kind of man would let a child run away to him, with the intent to abuse her sexually? This man, Jason Strickland,” said Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Brooke Grona-Robb referring to the defendant during closing arguments. Ms. Grona-Robb served as 1st chair on this case. Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Reynie Tinajero sat 2nd chair. Dallas County District Attorney’s Office’s Senior Sergeant Eureka Williams served as the investigator and Roquel Mayhorn, of the Crimes Against Children Unit at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, served as the victim’s advocate.

ANEW LOW FOR THE “PARTY OF VOTER SUPPRESSION,” DALLAS COUNTY GOP SUES TO THROW OVER 100 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES OFF THE PRIMARY BALLOT

(D-Dallas), one of the candidates targeted by the DCRP, released the following statement in response: “Texas Republicans are constantly looking for ways to disenfranchise minority voters. They have done it at the state level in Austin and now they are trying to do it at the local level in Dallas County. The vast majority of the Democratic candidates who were targeted by the DCRP’s frivolous lawsuit are minorities. This is just the latest attempt by Texas Republicans to take away the ability of minority voters to elect candidates of their choice,” stated Representative Johnson. “To try and knock over 100 mostly minority candidates off another party’s primary ballot is simply unheard of,” stated Johnson. “I have known and respected people on the other side of the aisle for decades who would never have dreamt of doing something like this. The Republican Party, which has become the party of voter suppression nationally, has hit a new low in Texas,” Johnson added.

In the middle of the night on Friday, January 19, 2018, the Dallas County Republican Party (DCRP) filed a lawsuit to throw 128 Democratic candidates off the 2018 Democratic Primary ballot in Dallas County. Congressional candidates, state legislative candidates, judicial candidates, and other local candidates are among those whose filings are being challenged by the DCRP. Don’t Boo, Vote

Brandon Birmingham is the Presiding Judge of all Felony Criminal District Courts in Dallas County. He can be reached through all social media at @ JudgeBirmingham or by coming down to the 6th Floor of the Frank Crowley Courts during working hours. By Brandon Birmingham

My favorite community event of the year is the MLK Parade in Dallas. I’ve walked in it for the last 6 years, and so thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to meet people and answer any of their questions about our Criminal Justice System. There’s simply nothing like it. Don’t tell the parade organizers, but in 2015 I walked it twice. There’s so much energy and excitement during the parade, so much civic involvement. I always hope it will transfer to higher voter turnout. But it’s the midterm election season, and history tends to repeat itself. In Dallas County, voter turnout drops like a stone during mid-term election seasons. It’s abysmal. And we can do better. This year, I decided to do something different for the parade. Instead of walking, I gathered a team of very gracious volunteers and spent the morning registering people to vote. It was a modest success, but it was our first time, and we’ll learn and improve next time. And next time will be coming soon. This was the first in a voter registration series I’ll be hosting throughout the year leading into November. Stay tuned for that. But I’m not writing to tell you that people agreed to register to vote. I’m writing to address the reasons why people said they wouldn’t. First, I hear folks say that they can’t wait to vote in the presidential election. I appreciate that, but that doesn’t happen until 2020. For Washington D.C., the Texas Senators are up for election this time, as are a number of Congressional representatives. And this election is all about Texas: Governor, Texas Attorney General, State Representatives and a number of local Judges to name a few. If you want to have a say so in who will be representing either the Democrats or Republicans in Novem-

7

ber, you have to vote in the March Primary. There are a lot of candidates on this year’s ballot, but don’t let that scare you away. If you want to know exactly who you will be voting for, get a sample ballot by entering your address at Dallascountyvotes.org. You can make notes on these candidates, and take these notes into the booth with you. The second most common response I get is that people are “pretty sure” they are already registered. Let’s not leave things to chance. If you’re not sure, go to Dallascountyvotes.org or call 1-800-252-VOTE and make sure. Has your address changed recently? Have a few years passed since you last registered? The deadline to make sure is February 5th. It’s approaching quickly. Finally, some didn’t think they were eligible to vote because they’ve had some run-ins with the law. A felony conviction is not a permanent block to registering and voting. First, people placed on deferred probation, or whose case is on appeal, or those with pending charges are eligible because none of those are “final felony convictions.” Once a felon has successfully completed his or her punishment, including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, period of probation, or has been pardoned, then that person is immediately eligible to register to vote. Here’s my call to action for you. Make sure you are registered by February 5th by checking Dallascountyvotes.org or calling 1-800-252-VOTE. Make sure your friends and family are registered, too. For the Primary, vote early beginning February 20th at any polling location in Dallas County, or vote on election day March 6th at your home polling location. Finally, mark your calendars for the General Election on November 6th. I heard lots of boos for certain candidates during the parade, but even a million boos can’t vote someone in or out of office. There’s only one way to do that: a valid vote. Let’s break the cycle of low voter turnout in this year’s mid-term election. Let your voice be heard. Time is running out.
