is a decision. Let go in this moment. Now, empty yourself. Listen for divine guidance. Give thanks for what is coming through as your healthy eating intention. For the more you give thanks, the more you have to be thankful for!! Constantly be reminded throughout today to choose life in your eating selections. Believe and surrender to the idea that you are valuable and worthy of good health and wellness. Then the world will open up to you. Enjoy this heart healthy meal.

Virginia Woolf said, "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." Doing things well can be relative, but we can all agree that we will do well to take great care of our heart. My hope for you on this day is that you become very clear about your intention to eat in a healthy conscious manner. 2 large red bell peppers, halved and seeded; 8 oz can stewed tomatoes, with liquid; 1 cup brown rice; 2 Tbsp hot water; 2 green onions, thinly sliced; 1/2 lb of ground turkey/vegetarian crumble, thawed and drained; 1/2 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed; 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes; 1/2 avocado; 1 lb fresh asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces; 2 Tbsp water; 2 Tbsp butter or margarine, melted; 1 tsp lemon juice; 1 pinch dried tarragon; sea salt and pepper to taste

U.S. Rep. Johnson on Trump State of the Union Address

Congresswoman

Eddie

Bernice Johnson released the following responses to President Tr u m p’s State of the Union address:

On Transportation/Infrastructure: “Almost an entire year has passed since President Trump first addressed a joint session of Congress. Yet, we are no closer now than we were then to seeing a concrete plan on how the Administration plans to shore up our nation’s infrastructure. The $1.5 trillion infrastructure package that President Trump alluded to tonight sounds great on its face. However, the devil is always in the details and there is still no substitute for direct federal spending when it comes to infrastructure, especially when we are talking about helping our rural areas. In its last report, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) estimates that there is a current infrastructure gap of $1.5 trillion needed by 2025. The U.S. Department of Transportation also estimates that more than $800 billion is needed today just to bring our existing roads and bridges to a state of good repair. This is serious and our country is exposed to greater risk every single day that we do not act. The U.S. economy relies heavily on a vast network of infrastructure to move people, goods, and services. With-

out a robust transportation network, we are putting our nation’s economy and its people at risk. The time to act is now. This Administration owes it to the American people to deliver on his campaign promises to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure.” On the Economy: “Now more than ever, we need to be protecting our most vulnerable – particularly communities of color. Our economy should be working for every American, not just a select few. Yet President Trump’s only major legislative accomplishment during the first session of Congress was passage of a tax bill that overwhelmingly benefits the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations. This bill will end up costing the American people at least $1.5 trillion over the next decade, a heavy burden that future generations will be forced to bear for decades to come.” On Immigration: “I am deeply disappointed in the president’s tone towards immigrants and the disregard to how they contribute to our nation. President Trump seems to forget that this country’s history has been about tearing down walls, not building them up. The fate of 1.8 million young people should not be considered a bargaining chip for the president to use so that he can permanently reconfigure our legal immigration system by eliminating the diversity lottery and family reunification. President Trump should not use the hopes and dreams of thousands of DACA recipients within my district as a tool to erect an expensive wall. For too long,

these young people have only known the United States as their home. Congress must swiftly pass a bill to protect these individuals without damaging our reputation abroad as a place where dreams of a better life can come true.” On Healthcare: “President Trump signed the Republican Tax bill into law on December 22, 2017. His tax bill is just the beginning of the Republicans plan to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. The individual health care mandate, which is the primary enforcement mechanism under the ACA for individuals, will be repealed beginning in 2019. As a direct result of this repeal, more than 10 million Americans can reasonably expect to experience increased premiums. Ultimately, this will result in fewer Americans having health care coverage for their families. Within the next year alone, Medicare will be cut by $25 billion – effectively placing the burden of these tax cuts on the backs of our senior citizens. Sadly, Republicans in Congress and President Trump have demonstrated once again that they are willing to put the interests of a select few [the wealthy] ahead of the greater good of the American people. This bill will have a devastating impact on future generations for decades to come. We must continue to find a way to work with Republicans in a bipartisan manner to come up with real policy solutions to repair the Affordable Care Act and ensure all Americans have access to affordable and effective healthcare.”

For Your Health My Guardian Angel Que’s Corner

by Adrain Moffett the best was yet to come for our mother’s health.

Adrain Moffett

I am reminded vividly of a quote from Maya Angelou when I think about my precious mother. Maya Angelou once said, “If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.” Through my mother’s struggles, I have come to realize that faith, hope and love have inspired a different perspective or perception of life. See, I know my attitude regarding life has changed drastically. In 2013 my mother, Flora Lee Moffett, was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a mastectomy. After surgery was completed, my siblings and I thought

Unfortunately, in 2017 my mother was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer. The cancer had spread throughout her body rapidly. I can only remember sitting in the doctor’s office hearing him say, “Ms. Flora if you don’t get treatment within six months, you’re going to be really sick or not with us. I’m going to treat your cancer like I would treat my own mother.” The thought of seeing my mother suffer was difficult to accept for me and each of my siblings. I will never forget seeing tears in

my mother’s eyes as she said, “I’m so sorry for putting you all through all of this.” When those words came out of Mother’s mouth, I was in utter disbelief! I was thinking how can she feel so sad about being a burden to her children. That day I began to see more than ever my mother’s faith, hope, and love. There was no

in God would be the vessel to carry her through the troubled and murky waters. Mother started chemotherapy in April of 2017 once a week for six months. With all that Mother has gone through in life, not one thing or anyone has ever changed her positive attitude. Mother adapted through it all. Finally, because of excellent medical care, prayers from saints local and abroad, Mother’s cancer is now in remission. The Lord allowing, our gift from him in the person of Flora Moffett, our mother, will celebrate her 80th birthday on February 14th Valentine’s Day! Thank you Lord for our mother. Roo Roo! HEALTHY HAIR GOALS 5 TIPS FOR HEALTHY HAIR GROWTH By Rikki Burke Tip #1: TAKE YOUR VITAMINS Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc, Fish Oil, Vitamin B5, Iron just to name a few. Using vitamins with biotin and collagen helps your hair growth. Your hair needs good nutrition from the inside to grow out. Apply conditioner to the ends working your way up, avoid your scalp. Conditioner to your scalp, causes you hair to look limp and greasy once its dry. Detangle your hair with a wide tooth. You may leave it on for 15 minutes with a plastic bag under a heated dryer for a deep conditioner. Rinse with cold water in order to close hair cuticle, sealing in the moisture. Tip #3: STAY AWAY FOR EXCESSIVE HEAT When I say too much heat will cause all kinds of breakage, trust me it will! Too much of any thing it bad for you! Lay off the curling tools, blow dryers, and flat irons. When using hot tools, remember to apply a heat protector. Tip 4: STOP OVER PROCESSING YOUR HAIR splits Ladies, it’s important that we space out our chemical services. Chemical services should be done 6-8 weeks apart. Have patience, especially those who get a relaxer and hair color. Tip #5 CUT YOUR ENDS Cutting your hair ends promotes hair growth! Split ends only break your hair causing you to lose length. Building a Financial Plan? Spend Less.

By: Alonda Price

On our team we have a mantra, we live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world and yet many of us still retire poor. So where is the gap? It’s hiding in depths of Financial Literacy. Less than 8% of high schools in our country require any type of financial or economic education. It is as if we’re obstructed from the start. How do we overcome the hurdles that lie in wait? Take the first step, seek out tools and/or opportunities to better understand the foundational principles of “how money works.” It may seem elementary, but it takes discipline, prioritizing, and a willingness to act. To combat poverty, we must start with two things: First, Increase Cash Flow. It

is as simple as starting a daily and monthly budget. When we think of increasing cash flow many of us run directly to the notion of finding additional employment or seeking a raise or promotion of some kind. Merely attack the smallest debt balance first. There are many other means to take on this giant the most important thing you can do is make the decision to fight. To fight for your family and your future. Ultimately a prime example of starting and finishing strong financially is to spend less. Sounds like common sense, right? PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS By Kamesha Sheffield

“Our Constitutional Right” My question is: To whom does this Apply?” Join me on this journey as I interview a young lady in which I feel has endured an awful lot just to get back to a NORMAL STATE OF BEING. In my experience I’ve learned that this does not apply to all. Especially those of us who by whatever circumstances are now FELONS. For whatever reason some chose the life of a criminal as Society see it. However, one would beg to differ by saying there are many circumstances in which they had to choose THIS LIFE. Now the problem arises once we have entered well into adulthood finding out that the life we have become accustom to WAS and IS NOT “REALITY”.

Kamesha Sheffield

It is a life of no “legal” rules, laws or boundaries, but a lot of justifications. Now they are imprisoned ultimately because of their decisions that were made, even paroled or put on probation which they often view as a set up to eventually get locked up. Let’s say one does complete their probation or sentence successfully and by successfully, I mean REHABILITATED. This would intel some type of higher education like Technical School, Trade School or even College.

What’s with all those Judges?

A Column by Judge Brandon Birmingham, Presiding over the 292nd Judicial District Court, and Presiding Judge of the Felony District Courts in Dallas County. Join him on his Facebook Page – Judge Brandon Birmingham - LIVE every Friday at 5 on for “Fridays in Chambers,” a weekly video summary of what’s happening in the criminal justice system.

Judge Brandon Birmingham

By Brandon Birmingham

I feel sorry for voters. I know there aren’t that many voters to feel sorry for in non-presidential election years like this one, but that’s a topic for another day. Still, I feel sorry for them. Why? The ballot does not define the types of cases each Judge hears, it only lists a number. For example, I am the presiding judge of the 292nd Judicial District Court. I preside over felony criminal cases, everything from possession of small amounts of narcotics all the way up the punishment scale to capital murder. But you couldn’t tell all that by looking at the number, “292.” Nor could you by the title, “Judicial District Court,” for that matter. Ballots are also in numerical order, not grouped by subject. Take for example the Judicial District Court exactly 100 less than mine. It’s called the 192nd Judicial District Court, Judge Craig Smith presiding. Does it hear felony cases just like mine? Nope. Not even close. It is a Civil Court, where people sue other people for money. No one winds up in prison or on probation out of the 192nd. They might in the 292nd, but not the 192nd. Got a business dispute where someone is alleged to have breached a contract? Don’t file it in the 292nd. File it in the 192nd. As a matter of fact, you can’t file anything in the 292nd, only law enforcement can do that.

Confused? Wait until you see the ballot. Go to Dallascountyvotes.org and pull up your sample ballot. Here’s how these two courts appear to the voters: District Judge, 192nd Judicial District Court…. Craig Smith District Judge, 292nd Judicial District Court… Brandon Birmingham

No guiding light for voters there. If you know a state lawmaker, ask them to make a law that defines each type of court on the ballot. The law would require a short definition of what each court does (in English and Spanish), and would group the courts by their type and content, not by their number. Let’s call it the “Better Ballot Act,” and do everything we can to help voters make informed decisions. These benches are far too important to remain unidentifiable. After all, from divorce to dying, every major event or mistake in our lives will require Judicial input. Early voting starts soon: February 20th. First things first: make sure you are registered to vote by going to Dallascountyvotes.org, or call 1-800252-VOTE. If you’re not registered, you can’t vote. (And you can’t complain about any of the elected officials either.) Once registered, type in your address and print out your sample ballot. Research. Listen. Ask around. Make notes. Write down what you can find out about the Courts and candidates. Take these notes with you into the booth – there is nothing wrong with doing so. Print out ballots for your neighbors, and share information. Until we get better ballots, we’re going to have vote the old-fashioned way, and be motivated to be informed like our future depends on it.

STYLE Dressing for Success: How to Position Yourself with Power

By: Devoreaux Walton

Your image is the first thing people see. Before you get a chance to speak or interact with others, they have an idea about who you are: your personality, your work ethic, and your character. This is why what you wear in the workplace is so critical for long-term success. Regardless of what level you are in your career, from entry-level to executive, your image is important. The popular phrase "you never get a second chance at a first impression" is quite true. However, instead of just focusing on a positive first impression alone, I encourage you to make every impression a priority. Every time you get dressed for the office, to visit a client, or represent your company, you should aim to convey an image of power and authority.

The key to maintaining a polished and professional image is to first focus on being appropriate. What you wear to work and work-related events depend on two things: the dress code for your industry and the occasion or event. The appropriate work attire for a corporate attorney is quite different from what would be accepted at a technology start-up. Likewise, the appropriate attire for the office is different from what would be accepted at a company picnic. Dressing for success is easily achieved by being intentional in the wardrobe choices you make as you prepare each day to leave for work. The second element to focus on when dressing for success is the fit of clothing. This is important for both men and women in the workplace, but I believe it will make the biggest difference in men's overall appearance. As you shop to supplement your

closet and wardrobe, regardless of the amount of money you spend on clothing - the proper fit should be top priority. Quality is important, and you should buy the highest quality of clothing you can afford, however in all clothing you purchase, you should try the item on first to make sure it fits before buying it. Tailors are able to help you adjust the size of your clothing to be the proper fit for you. It's an extra step worth the time, effort, and money it requires. Lastly, when dressing for success you should feel confident in what you wear. Only wear clothing that you like and feel good in, because how you feel about yourself will show through in your interactions with others. A dress suit or blazer, tie, and trousers that you are confident in will give you the extra boost of boldness at work. Co-workers and clients will take notice that you are polished and professional when you look and feel your best, this is how to properly position yourself with power. devoreauxw@gmail.com
