I often hear that breakfast is also a HUGE challenge. Today I want to share some breakfast options to help alleviate that issue and perhaps add some variety and flavor to your normal daily breakfast. If you want to add superfoods (foods that can have health-promoting properties such as reducing one’s risk of disease or improving any aspect of physical or emotional health and have an unusually high content of antioxidants, vitamins, or other nutrients) into your wellness diet, breakfast is a great place to start. One small adjustment to your regular morning meal can put your day on the right track. Cook 1 chopped shallot in 1 teaspoon olive oil or grapeseed oil in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat until just soft, about 3 minutes. Add 1 generous cup baby spinach, season with sea salt and pepper and stir until wilted; transfer to a shallow bowl. Cook an egg in another teaspoon coconut oil and season with salt and pepper; serve over the spinach. Whisk together 1 cup 2-percent Greek yogurt, 2 teaspoons green tea matcha powder and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Layer half the yogurt in a glass, top with a few raspberries and 1 tablespoon sliced almonds. Repeat with the remaining yogurt and more raspberries and almonds
Top a scrambled egg or omelet with 1 slice smoked salmon and a generous handful of crisp sprouts, such as sunflower or radish.

It looks like I’m about to be wrong about voter turnout in Dallas. In my column a few weeks ago, I declared that voter turnout drops like a stone in off-presidential years like this one. State and County wide early voting returns are in, and turnout this year has increased dramatically. Sometimes, I love being wrong. If the early numbers are any indicator, I’m way off. Of course, the numbers may dip during the remainder of the early voting period or on election day itself, but this election is shaping up to be substantially different than other more recent ones. Let’s talk about Dallas County, first. Jackie Wang of The Dallas Morning News reports that 2,587 Democrats voted on day one of the 2014 primary compared to 4,023 on day one of this year’s contest. That’s an increase of over 50%. Additionally, Democratic turnout for this off-presidential election eclipsed the presidential primary campaign in 2016 by more than 1,000 votes. On the other side of the Dallas County aisle, 2,412 Republicans voted on the first day of the 2014 prima-
15,523 Democrats voted in these counties in 2010 compared to 28,475; Republican turnout increased by about 4,000 votes during the same period. Also in these 15 counties, more than 50% of the votes were cast in the Democratic primary for the first time since 2008. Platoff reminds us that even though more Democrats came out in March, the Republicans still won all of the State wide seats. Will all of this translate to a change in the political landscape of Dallas or Texas in 2018? We’ll have to wait until the general election on November 6th to know how these numbers drive which candidates will ultimately win office. Democratic Judge Mark Greenberg has served the community on the bench of County Court at Law 5 since being elected in 2002. In his years on the bench, he has approached his work with impartiality and professionalism. He is the only two-time winner of the prestigious Trial Judge of the Year Award, bestowed each year by the American Board of Trial Advocates Dallas Chapter. We must ask ourselves and teach our children what is a stranger? Are we doing this? Have we taught our children who our friends are? The facts are: Every 40 seconds a child goes missing or is abducted. Stranger contacts occur within a quarter mile of the child’s home. Function of the Skin 101
By La Tonya Spencer
Did you know? Our skin is the largest organ of your body, although, the skin is visible it’s often overlooked in terms of protection against environmental assaults. Thank you for your comments. My previous articles addressed the importance of caring for your skin and selecting the right skincare solutions to maintain healthy looking skin. This week’s article will address the functions of the skin, its make-up, and how proper skincare works to ensure healthy looking skin. The make-up of our skin: ●Epidermis- The protective, outermost layer of skin ●Dermis- The living layer of the skin where all key functions take. This middle layer is made up of blood vessels, oil and sweat glands, hair follicles and the skin’s support structure collagen and elastin. ●Subcutaneous Layer- The deepest layer, consisting of fat cells to cushion and insulate skin and blood vessels ●Blood Vessel- Part of the circulatory system that functions to transport blood throughout the body. Provides skin with vital nutrients and oxygen ●Collagen- A fibrous protein that, along with elastin, makes up skin’s natural support structure Elastin- Elastic like fibers that make skin firm and bounce back from stretching and pulling ●Sweat Gland- The skin’s natural
cooling system. When overheated, the body perspires as needed through the sweat glands ●Sebaceous GlandsA gland in the dermis that secretes an oil substance, sebum. An over-productive sebaceous gland can lead to oily skin and enlarged pores ●Hair Follicle- A tube, like opening in the epidermis where the hair shaft resides ●Laminins-Protein that support the epidermis ●Basil Cell Layer-Bottom of epidermis, where new skin cell and melanin are produced ●Lipid- Natural fatty substance found in skin. Lipids help skin maintain a protective moisture barrier and are essential to skin health. A decrease in lipids results in dryness and potential irritation ●Melanocyte- A cell in the basal layer of the epidermis that produces and contains the pigment melanin. Which protects the skin from the sun and provides skin its color ●Moisture Barrier- Protective barrier (also known as stratum corneum) in epidermis made up of lipids that helps keep environmental irritants out and vital moisture in.
