ing pattern of the GOP finding problems where they do not exist, which have the effect, if not the intent, of keeping minority voters from electing the candidates of their choice," stated Representative Johnson. “I pray that the court will conclude the GOP’s completely baseless lawsuit should be dismissed, so I can turn my full attention back to serving my constituents," Johnson added. Saving, Why Wait? By: Alonda Price Saving! It’s what we’ve always been taught to do but the lesson typically stops there. We save for vacation, a home, or retirement. But when we save do we know how fast our money is growing? Most don’t know what rate of return or interest rate they are receiving which is the first sign of trouble.

BLAST FROM THE PAST
A few simple rules for great nutrition: calories down, protein up, more greens, and replace bad fats with healthy fats. The thing is, we actually don’t eat protein, carbs and fat; we eat food. So the real question is: if you want to lose fat, what exactly should you eat? Should I do it all at once? There are ways to make any meal healthier, faster to make, and better. But here's the thing: take it easy. If you want to get in shape, don't try to change every meal and snack you eat right away, because it's too much to change at once. For now, just focus on improving one meal. That may seem small. But, really, it's a huge step, and one many people never take. Focus on one improvement at a time. In fact, making one small improvement at a time is what I have all my clients do. And we produce more dramatic change stories than probably anyone else. Try this meal to jumpstart your progress.

A Sincere Faith By Rev. Fabian K. Jacko, Pastor Greater Golden Gate Baptist Church, Dallas, TX
Daniel 1:8-21 Certain stories and characters from the Old Testament have provided for us a wonderful sense of heroism down through the years. Their tests of courage have for every child of God proved to be a most valuable resource for spiritual growth and maturity. The story of Daniel is one of them. Images of a fiery furnace, mysterious hand writing on the wall and praying in the den of lions have long been in the heads of young Christians who while enduring their own struggles faithfully believe that God will deliver them in the same supernatural ways. However, we must remember that before great acts of God’s favor is enjoyed trials of our faith will be employed. The lesson opens with Daniel and his Hebrew friends - Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah being given the Babylonian names Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, respectively (Daniel 1:6-7). It was an attempt to change their allegiance to Jehovah God and the country of their birth. The initial test given these men was to eat the daily ration of meat and wine from King Nebuchadnezzar’s table. Daniel is obviously troubled that they are asked to participate in an act which goes against their beliefs. He is emphatic about not defiling himself with such provisions, knowing that they either came from meat sacrificed to Babylonian gods and that to adhere to this policy was a direct affront to the food regulations in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 11). Unfortunately, this is where we “Strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel (Matthew 23:24).” Are there some laws we practice only within the confines of the sacred or are we to follow the practice to the letter, home or abroad? Daniel’s request to not participate was met with objection by the prince of the eunuchs and his servant. However, with great persuasion the four were allowed to eat an alternative diet of pulse (vegetables) and water for 10 days. In the end, Daniel and his three friends pass the test and appear healthier than those that ate the King’s meal over
the same period of time. In this their request was justified by their faithfulness to God and in the end respected by the servant. Isn’t it impressive how God works in the Hebrews favor? He does the same for us today when we faithfully put our trust in Him. Even more so, God seems to always have someone attentive to the misfortune of His children. For Joseph it was the keeper of the prison. For Moses it was Pharaoh’s daughter. For Daniel it was Melzar. In your time of despair just know that God has got you covered. The next test was an attempt to train the four men in “the ways and language of the Chaldeans” (Daniel 1:4). However, these young men from Judah had been prepared in advance by God with “knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom” (Daniel 1:17). So, when King Nebuchadnezzar sent for them to be tested he found them to be more competent than any of the pagan magicians and astrologers. For over twenty-one centuries believers have had to exhibit sincere faith in God to warn, preserve and at times deliver them from multitudes of confusion. What He did then He is still able to do to this day!
Word from the Clergy
Where is Your Faith In God (Rev. James Cleveland – Savoy Records 1985) Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith will keep you when your way seems dark; Faith, faith, where is your faith in God? Christians, you say that you love the Lord, And yet we complain that each day seems hard. Into each life some rain must fall; Faith, faith, where is your faith in God? Faith can move mountains, Faith can open the fountain, Oh, faith can help you succeed, Oh, faith can supply your every need; Where is your faith in God?

Celebrating Cesar Chavez By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson In a few days those among us who recognize the significance of the important contributions that various people have made to our country, will celebrate the birthday By Rep. Eddie of an American hero, Bernice Johnson Cesar Chavez. While he is best known for his leadership of Hispanic, Asian and African American farmworkers, Chavez, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt and Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, was a visionary whose moral and political leadership helped to shape the social fabric of our country Had he lived Chavez would celebrate his 91st birthday on March 31st. There are many who believe that Chavez was from Mexico. In fact, he was an American, born in Yuma, Arizona where he was raised in home that believed in assisting others who had little, and thanking God for the blessings that entered a family’s life. One of the early influences in his life was his grandmother, Mama Tella, who instructed her grandson that a moral life was a good life. Chavez said at his grandmother’s table and eagerly listened as she philosophized during family meals. In the wake of the depression the Chavez family found itself nearly destitute in Arizona. They were evicted from the small property that they farmed, and moved to California to pursue a better life. When he was ten-years-old, Chavez journeyed each day by truck for more than an hour with other members of his family to work in the fields, picking grapes and lettuce. While working he learned the hardships that migrant workers faced, the paucity of their wages and the meanness of those that employed them. He witnessed souls that were empty at the end of long and grueling days. Chavez’s formal education ended when he had to leave school as an eighth grader so that he could work fulltime in the fields to earn money to help his family. Years later he would join the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific in the war against Japan.
He became his legendary life as a community organizer in 1952 in California as an organizer for the Community Service Organization. He urged minorities to register to vote and he fought injustice wherever it reared its ugly head. Ten years later, Chavez and a fellow activist, Dolores Huerta, launched the National Farm Workers Association which later became the United Farms Workers. By the mid-1960s the organization that Chavez founded has a membership in the thousands. A major strike, involving 5,000 farm workers was successful when Chavez appealed to people throughout America to boycott grapes produced by farmers that took advantage of farm workers. Victory did not come until 1970 when the powerful growers were brought to their knees by Chavez and his movement which had national and international appeal and support. Dr. King said that he and Chavez were “brothers” in the struggle for justice and equality Because of his work, California growers offered contracts, including healthcare and pension benefits to their workers, and a decent wage. Chavez did not pursue wealth. He did not live an extravagant life. He did not wish for material things. He only pursed social change, holding on to the principles that his grandmother taught him. He died peacefully while sleeping on April 23rd, 1993. He was only sixty-six years of age and was in Arizona fighting for the men and women who he had served for most of his adult life Nearly 50,000 people marched behind a plain wooden coffin that contained his remains after his funeral. Among those who carried coffin was Reverend Jesse Jackson who had become Chavez’s friend and colleague many years earlier. In 2014 President Barack Obama, himself once a community organizer, issued a presidential proclamation proclaiming March 31st 2014 as Cesar Chavez Day. “I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate service, community and education programs to honor Cesar Chavez’s enduring legacy,” Obama said, calling him a great champion for social justice. In California, Chavez’s birthday is celebrated as a state holiday. Perhaps the rest of the nation will one day honor this great American patriot who led an exemplary and principled life.

A long-time civil rights advocate and former municipal judge for the City of Dallas, Paula Rosales announced her campaign in November 2017 to become the next judge of Dallas County Court-at-Law 4. Rosales brings a breadth of experience including her work in the trial and appellate section of the Dallas County District Attorney, a human rights advisor with the U.S. Department of State, and as an attorney in private practice. On March 6, 2018, Rosales obtained 37,000 votes—the most votes—during the primary Democratic election in a four-person race. She is now in a runoff against the incumbent Judge Ken Tapscott, who, as pointed out by The Dallas Morning News (DMN), took the extraordinary step of planting two women in the race to serve as stalking horses designated

In February 2018, Rosales along with other women judges and attorneys sponsored DA Hulcy Middle School to attend a Black Panther movie screening! “My passion and dedication for service were ignited by my parents. They are human rights advocates who were involved in peace and justice movements in Guatemala,” said Rosales. “They are pioneers – instrumental in advocating and fighting for fundamental human rights and indigenous people rights. I’m bringing their pioneering qualities and dedication to public service. It’s not about me – it’s about serving my community.” Rosales attended Richland Community College and graduated from Southern Methodist University and Texas Wesleyan School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and French. Rosales has been endorsed by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Reverend Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, Reverend Dr. Michael W. Waters, Honorable Craig Watkins, and Commissioner Dr. Elba Garcia among many. Commissioner Garcia shared that, “I know Paula Rosales and all the work she has done for our community. Her experience as a municipal judge shows that she has the intellect, temperament, and compassion we need on the bench.” Pastor Haynes said, “It’s time for a new day in how we do justice [and] Paula Rosales believes strongly that justice should be for all and not just the select few.” To join the movement to elect Paula Rosales, visit www.paulaforjudge.com, and follow her on Facebook.

In Memoriam - Anthony D. Armstrong
Anthony D’Lance Armstrong was born in Dallas, Texas on March 13, 1988, to Cecil and Beverly Wilkes Armstrong. He was educated in DISD public schools where he attended Albert Sidney Johnson Elementary, Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle and Roosevelt High Schools. Anthony was known as “Pooh” by his family and friends; but that was an abbreviated name from the one bestowed upon him, “Pooh Bear,” by his paternal grandmother, Joann Armstrong, who preceded him in death. A lover of football, Pooh, who lived in the heart of Cowboy Country, was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan. He also loved nachos, Frito pies, women, R&B music and fast-driving cars. On occasion Pooh attended Friendship-West Baptist Church. Born a day before his father began his comedy career; Pooh provided material that propelled Shuckey Duckey onto international stages. He is remembered for his big heart and even bigger smile; but he was also known for having a temper. Pooh joined his father in the world-renowned
UniverSoul Circus where he worked in numerous positions, including as a stiltwalker. Although he could tell a joke or two, however, comedy wasn’t in his future. Pooh was well-known as a quiet, lovable guy with a strong sense of family. In fact, you didn’t mess with his family! Even as a young child, Pooh was challenging! It was difficult keeping a babysitter, but his parents were blessed to find an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Billy and Maggie Tatum; who treated him like their own. May they rest in peace. Left to cherish his memory are his parents Beverly Wilkes Armstrong (Gary, IN) and Cecil (Karen) Armstrong; grandmother Ruby Davis; his children Mia, Chase, Amar’e, Anthony Jr., and Braylen; two sisters Cecilia and Shaniqua; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, special friends (Charles Ray and Roderick Randolph, Jr.); and, a host of other family members and fr iends.

And Justice For All.
And Justice For All - A Column by Judge Brandon Birmingham, Presiding over the 292nd Judicial District Court, and Presiding Judge of the Felony District Courts in Dallas County. Join him on his Facebook Page – Judge Brandon Birmingham - Every Friday LIVE at FIVE for “Fridays in Chambers,” a weekly video summary of what’s happening in the criminal justice system.
Privilege vs. Accountability For the next few weeks, we’ll look at some of the Landmark criminal justice cases decided by the Supreme Court of the United States. We’ll start with one that started out as a burglary. During the sentencing phase of this burglary case, one of the men charged with the crime insisted that a man he worked for made him do it. This peeked the interest of special prosecutor Archibald Cox. His investigation revealed that the boss recorded conversations, and if he got the tapes, he would have undeniable proof that the boss was complicit. Seems simple enough: when a prosecutor has reason to believe that a person possesses evidence of a crime, the prosecutor can ask a Court to issue a subpoena to obtain it. One problem for Mr. Cox was that the boss who was in possession of the tapes was the President of the United States, Richard Nixon. He subpoened the tapes. Then he got fired. Leon Jaworski took Mr. Cox’s place and took over right where he left off: he applied for a subpoena in a D.C. trial court.. The President objected, claiming his “executive privilige” prevented him from turning over the tapes. The trial court ordered the President to turn the tapes over. He refused, and appealed to the Supreme Court of the United States. The United States v. Nixon became a showdown about the fundamental pow-
Judge Brandon Birmingham er structure of our government. We have three branches, the Legislative, Judicial and Executive. What happens when one claims power over another? Fundamentally, the President was claiming that in order to carry out his obligation to protect and serve the American People, he needed to be able to discuss things in private with his advisors without fear of the conversation leaving the walls of the Oval Office. On the other hand, Mr. Jaworski claimed that a Court’s authority to lawfully allow the collection of criminal evidence is the sole mechanism to ensure that no one - regardless of their title - is above the law.

A unanimous Supreme Court agree with Mr. Jaworski: The President had to turn over the tapes. Lo and behold, to almost no one’s suprise, the tapes revealed that the President was indeed complicit with the Watergate burglary, and that he tried to cover it up. That decision resulted in President Nixon’s resignation on August 9, 1974: “I hereby resign the office of President of the United States.” This is the first of 5 cases we’ll discuss in the Landmark series of “And Justice For All.” Up next: You have the right to remain siBrandon Birmingham Judge – 292nd Judicial District Court Presiding Judge – Criminal District Courts Dallas County, Texas 214-653-5882
