Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Releases Statement in Recognition of the National Science Foundation’s Funding Award WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement in recognition of the National Science Foundation’s funding award to Southern Methodist University’s Simmons School of Education: On September 11, 2017, Congresswoman Johnson was notified by the National Science Foundation’s funding award for Southern Methodist University. The award of $2,549,462 was granted to Southern Methodist University’s Simmons School of Education
to Simmons faculty member and TI Endowed Chair in Education, Leanne Ketterlin Geller, and researcher, Lindsey Perry. This award will be used for the Discovery Research K-12 program to develop measures for testing math skills in numeric relational reasoning and spatial reasoning. "I am very pleased that the National Science Foundation has selected Southern Methodist University to receive this award," said Congresswoman Johnson. "These funds will help Southern Methodist University increase their
support to education worldwide, especially in an area where the achievement gap is wide and needs attention." The award will assist teachers and schools in screening students to spot who is at-risk for challenges in math education at early ages. The measures will also provide information about the amount of support needed for a particular student.
Voting yes on Proposition 7 The bill passed nearly unanimously out of the Texas House and Senate and was signed into law by Governor Abbott on June 15, 2017. It requires one final step before it is allowed to take effect.
Representative Eric Johnson
The Texas Constitution currently prohibits certain forms of lotteries or raffles that are not conducted by nonprofits or religious organizations in order to prevent anything from competing with the Texas Lottery. For this reason, a constitutional amendment was required to accompany Representative Johnson's legislation. All voters in the State of Texas will have the opportunity to give this policy its final approval in November. When asked why he offered the new law, Representative Johnson stated the following: “I was looking to find innovative policy ideas to encourage
saving and promote financial security in low income areas, like the ones I represent. I was also looking to find policy ideas that target predatory payday lenders,” Representative Johnson stated. “Based on my experience in Austin, it is very difficult to take on payday lenders head-on due to pushback from legislators who are actively advocating to keep them in business. Prize-linked savings programs are a way to indirectly combat predatory lending by reducing the demand for the types of loans payday lenders offer,” Johnson concluded. Voting yes on Proposition 7 in November will allow banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions to utilize this innovative policy tool to help families save money.

Houston Giving Back:
“Dallas Strong
Andy Jacobsohn/Staff Photographer) Dallas News/Dallas Morning News Hundreds of Hurricane displaced survivors now call Dallas home. Whether it be temporary or permanent, these individuals must now figure out where they go from here. Some came with their families and others by themselves, whatever the case these individuals have to start all over in a new city called Dallas. Many of these families and individuals came with what they could only carry in suitcases or bags many have to find shelter. This maybe with relatives, a shelter, or hotel. They also have to have clothes, shoes, food and toiletries. Because of this many Dallas businesses, churches, community centers and families have decided to do their part to assist with those in need who have come to Dallas to live and to help those still recovering from their losses in the Houston area. In Houston, they came together during, after Hurricane Harvey passed

Former R&B Singer
Joe Simon
Honored in Simmesport, Louisian
History was made recently in Simmesport, Louisiana when their native son, former R&B singer, Joe Simon, was honored by naming a portion of a major thoroughfare in his honor. Highway 1 (LA), is now officially named “Joe Simon Boulevard”. “Joe Simon Boulevard” now intersects Dr. Martin Luther King Street, in the neighborhood where Simon grew up.
Simon left Simmesport as a young man in the 1950’s seeking fame and fortune and it landed him in Oakland, California. It was there that he would experience a two year journey of living in a chicken coop. Never forgetting his humble beginnings and the thought of going back to picking cotton was enough to inspire Simon to continue to live in the chicken coop, until success would finally come knocking at his door. After a few years of struggling, he found fame and fortune with the success of “The Chokin’ Kind” and it catapulted him the top of the charts to Number 1, also earning him a Grammy Award in 1970 for [Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male], and 3 more Grammy Nominations with “Drowning In The Sea Of Love”, “I Need You, You Need Me” and “The Power Of Love”, just to name a few. It was during this
time that Simon was consistent with hit after hit the following year and years to come by producing 3 number 1 hits, 13 top 10 hits, 15 top 20 hits and 9 top 40 hits along with numerous Gold Record Awards and accolades to his credit. Even with success and money that he was earning while at the top of his game, was not enough to make him happy. In fact, it made more and more disenfranchised with the music business. He would later find his true happiness and his calling in the ministry. During the 1980’s, Simon walked away from it all – leaving the secular music world stunned, because he was a man of principle and not about money. He preached his first sermon on August 6, 1988 to a reported crowd of over 4,500 in Alexandria, Louisiana. When he’s not recording Gospel music, he can be found ministering [now] as Bishop Joe Simon [Bishop Joe Simon Ministries and Crusades]. www.bishopjoesimonministries.
org Simmesport’s newly elected Mayor - Mayor Leslie Draper III is to be commended for initiating the name change and hosting the 2-day historic event. A special thanks to State Representative Robert Johnson, who presented the name change to the legislature in April of 2017. It didn’t take long for it to be approved unanimously by the House and Senate lawmakers during their 2017 Legislative session and lastly, by signing it into law as [House Bill – 100] by Governor Jon Bel Edwards.
These two momentous occasions were also attended by Simon’s family and friends along with various dignitaries from the city and state. Lt. General Russel Honore`, State Representative Dustin Miller, Alderman Jacob Coco, Simmesport Police Chief Damion Jacobs, Rich Rosenbaum and Bishops Sandilands, Ferguson and Campbell from the Bahamas and Ernie Johnson. Bishop Joe Simon is in a class all by himself, like a rare jewel, and it’s evident by the love shown to him and his contributions to R&B music, that he’s still revered as much today as he was when he was singing the secular hits.
In addition to the “Joe Simon Boulevard” name change, he was also inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame by Executive Director, Mike Shepherd.

Every weekday at approximately 8:00 am, Gary "Devito" Walker heads to the downtown Dart bus station prepared to intervene and connect with students from Dallas CAN Academy. He walks up to them and introduces himself as an Urban Specialist and briefly talks to students about their mission, which is to stop senseless acts of violence and create more career opportunities for young adults in our inner cities. Dallas CAN Academy is an alternative school that caters to students who are not able to complete Still Waiting onin the Freedom their schooling in a traditional high school setting. Being present midst of arguments gives him an opportunity to teach students, valuable lessons about how to control their behavior to get ahead in life.
After Being Wrongfully Convicted
It takes a very special person to be a mentor to students, and it is virtually impossible to be a mentor if your mentees do not have any respect for you. Devito has earned the respect of the youth in the South Dallas community because of what he has gone through in the criminal justice system. In February 1992, a heinous act was committed in Dallas, Texas. A woman was slain in a shooting, which left her with shots to the head, neck and even her genitals. At the time, there was a rumor going around saying her killer was a 15 year old named Gary Walker. Because of a $20 dollar debt and how widely known this debt was, Devito, was now a suspect in the murder. Like most of the residents in the victim’s neighborhood, Devito was shocked when he heard the news. He just couldn’t believe someone would kill her because she had such a nice personality. However she had a drug habit which made it even more difficult to find her killer. An entire month passed, and there still wasn’t anyone charged in the death of this woman. When Devito’s mother arrived home one day from work, she noticed a note on the outside of her door, stating her son was wanted for questioning. Devito’s mother informed him of the note the detectives left behind and questioned him about whether or not he was involved with the woman’s murder. Initially, his mother’s concern was whether or not she actually had a murderer under her roof, but after examining him through her own set of questions and his responses, she knew her son had no involvement with the murder. Now her concern has shifted to fear as she tells him she can send him away to Florida to stay with his grandparents. Because Devito knew he had no involvement whatsoever in the woman’s death, he said, “Mom, you don’t have to send me anywhere. I don’t have anything at all to do with the murder. “ Devito recalls having this conversation with his mother on a Friday and Page 9

form to make sure they have purchased virgin hair. According to Ms. Shavers, if cared for properly, virgin hair can last for up to four years or longer. One of the reasons why it outlasts other versions of human hair is its strength. When you purchase 100% virgin hair, you are purchasing hair which has been received from one donor and has never been treated. Treating hair may involve hair coloring and/or chemical processing. Virgin hair is hair in its purest form, and like the hair we have grown naturally on the top of our heads, it must receive proper attention to thrive. Any sort of color change in the cloth indicates the hair has been treated. Devito described the interrogation as being one which is commonly seen in the movies; two detectives with completely opposite demeanors - one extremely nice and the other angry and mean. This process went on for hours and although he was told initially, he was just needed for questioning and would be released immediately afterwards, it would be months before he was eventually released on a bond. Months would pass before the prosecution was ready to try its case against Devito and when they

According to Devito, everything was going well the first few days of the trial, but something turned around towards the end of it. A young boy of just 14 years old was brought in as a witness at the end of the trial, completely turned things around for Devito and Corey. Although Devito had seen the kid in the neighborhood occasionally, they were not friends. Devito was sentenced to 55 years and Corey was sentenced to 45 in an adult prison. Their families were devastated by the sentences read to the court by the Judge. Devito’s mother admits she refused to cry in front of her son, but broke down later and Corey’s mother fainted. It didn’t take long for Devito to start searching for ways to free himself after being wrongfully convicted. But if it were not for the dedication of Antong Lucky, a shrewd Bailsbondsman, and private investigator Pat Kinnard and his wife Ann Marie, there's a good chance, Gary might still be behind bars. Once these two men got together and started pouring over the transcript and revealing numerous September 8, 2017
