Debra’s Do’s and Don’ts Debra Blair Abron
How are you doing on your weight loss and life change journey? Is everything going the way you thought it should? Do you feel like you’ve gotten to a point and you haven’t seen more results? And, the most important question is, “Have you had to deal with haters while on your journey?” All of these questions and more are questions many of us have when we set out on this journey of changing our lives health wise. Question 1: Is everything going the way you thought it should? Well, when starting out on any new journey, it will have its ups and downs. The key is to celebrate the victories and reevaluate the losses or in this case, the gains. You have to understand that changing the way you eat can have setbacks, it’s normal. When a setback occurs you have to refresh and restart, but don’t give up. Remember this is a lifestyle change! Question 2: Do you feel like you’ve gotten to a point and you haven’t seen more results? Losing weight is not easy! Eating healthy and actually thinking about what you eat can be hard at times. So, when you see weight loss over a period of time and then it seems nothing else is happening, you have to look at your plan and see if there are ways you can switch up what you’ve been doing. Sometimes you 3

have to add to or takeaway you’ve been. Your mind and body deserves change after a while. It’s simple, reboot every six weeks so your mind and body can get out of the stagnate stage. Stay focused but don’t give up. Question 3: Have you had to deal with haters while on your journey? Changing your life for the better is never easy! You have life, family, bills, and other stressful situations that come along with being an adult. But, what can be more difficult than any of these things are “HATERS”! Haters are those individuals that are either jealous of your success or fear you will now take the attention away from them. Those individuals that are happy for your new life change will root you on and keep you encouraged. But, those individuals that are intimidated by your success will say negative things, make sly remarks, or say negative things in a joking manner as if they are playing. Don’t let their ignorance or lack of self-esteem discourage you. Keep to your circle of family and friends that have your back or have your best interest at heart. If you find you don’t have a core group of people to keep you inspired, remember why you are doing this. This life change is for you and you have to be strong in mind and spirit. So, shake those HATERS off, they ain’t worth it!
Remember when making changes in your life, no matter what they are, you will have its ups and downs, bumps in the road, or and negative people. Your goal is to face these challenges, be positive, and don’t ever give up and don’t go back to your old habits! Yes, these struggles are real, but not impossible to overcome. “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20) elitearticles@aol.com

We Are Survivors Survivor of childhood molestation, rape and domestic violence Final Part Two months after I left, I finally went to our apartment to move my things into storage and on that day he tried to kill me. I remember thinking that I would die by strangulation. Thankfully, he let me go and I eventually moved to San Diego where I eventually found a job. To forget the past, I drank and had little self-worth. I did anything to try and forget the past. I thought that forgetting it was better than dealing with it. Most people seem to shy away from people after being in an abusive relationship, but I ran head first into as much attention as I could. I went to therapy and tried to talk to my friends, but no one believed that the man I was married to would do anything to hurt me. I felt so isolated and only two people stuck by me through all of this. I moved to Orange County, and it was my big chance for a future. I got a job with a temporary agency, making barely enough money to pay my bills, but everything was MINE. The best part was that he didn’t know where I lived. Until the day he called and begged to get back together, he had changed. We had been apart for 18 months so I wanted to believe him. I made the mistake of allowing him to come down and spend a weekend to talk and see if there was anything left of the relationship and to see if he had changed. How perfect! I could be with him and have no violence and then I hadn’t really failed at marriage, right? After spending time with him, I realized he hadn’t changed. He was still the same person. I asked him to leave and he did. Over the past several years he has emailed me and
contacted me on Facebook. I’ve come to realize he will never stop trying to reach me. After a while, I started working on myself, realizing that my unhappiness was not good for me. I deserved to be happy. What I went through with him was not a reflection of who I am or what I am worth. I started writing again and encourage others to write about their day and feelings and then reflect on what you have written. I began to feel like my old self again. I started looking at dating again and I even stopped drinking occasionally. I didn’t feel the need to be numb any more. In 2006, I had the amazing opportunity to
become a mother through adoption. Every moment of my life became about this little girl. I knew that everything had to change but I never realized that I had pushed my past so far back in my mind. I didn’t realize how much changing my life would require me to deal with things. I have been the mother to my beautiful daughter for 3 years and 5 months. Two and a half years ago I married an amazing man, a man that would never raise his hand to me. To this day, I don’t like scarves around my neck, or really anything touching the front of my neck. I

apologize for everything, my fault or not. I worry that my daughter will follow in my footsteps, just as I followed in my mother’s. I worry that no matter how many times I say I am a SURVIVOR of domestic violence that I will have nightmares for the rest of my life. Surviving domestic violence is one day at a time. I believe that forgiveness is important in moving on but not forgetting because this made you a stronger person. You lived through something that most people couldn’t. I don’t like people to pity me or apologize for what he did to me. I want people to see me as a strong woman, a mother and a wife; a woman that survived and is thriving. A woman with a mission to help educate others on domestic violence. Are you supposed to be terrified to leave? YES. Are you supposed to think about him afterwards? YES. Are you supposed to be able to move on and have a happy and healthy relationship? YES. There is no one way to deal with the after trauma of domestic violence but know you can do it. There are so many people here to help, so many organizations that want you to succeed! You can do it. Each person deals with this in their own way, none of them are any better; only different. f you have a survival story to tell, let me share it. Rollin With A Brotha Welcome to the weekend baby! Ahhhhh Valentines Day is only a few days away. According to Woman’s Health Magazine(One of my Wife’s favorites)1-4 men have admitted forgetting(kaboom) the day. If you have no idea what you want to do for your baby, Psychology Today recommends doing some type of charity where together you’d use the Valentine’s money and together volunteer to help someone else. I know you’re saying , hmmmmm or nawwwwww,lol...”P.T.” went on to share some of the benefits of the charity celebration approach including a drop in your blood pressure and an endorphin release so you end up feeling happier! As for us, this June we celebrate our 27th Wedding Anniversary and are soooooooo
looking forward to a real Mommy/ Daddy time getaway. Mommy/ Daddy time is simply the time you had without interruption by those we’ve made, before we made them, lol. As for our “V” Day fun, I must admit when Mrs. B took Monday and Tuesday off to spend with me it was very impressive. I’ve planned most of the fun during our 28 year relationship, so I’ll admit to being pretty excited about the lady in the picture at the top of this column taking charge! . Not sure what we’ll be doing(Hehehe), but I know it’s gonna be turnt up. Happy Valentine’s Weekend to everyone who is loved and loves somebody..... In Smokin Tidbits:Congrat’s to Jay-Z and Beyonce on the pregnancy. If Beyonce

you’ve not heard, they’re having twins. Beyonce appears to be 4-5 months along which makes me wonder how she’s gonna headline the huge Coachella Music Fest this April? Hmmmm. We’ll get a better look at Mrs. Carter this Sunday at 7 on Channel 11 as she performs on this years Grammy’s! If anyone can, it’s Queen “B”! Female fans are gonna have another reason to love “Power” when it returns to the Starz Cable Network on June 6th. Actor Lorenz Tate joins the cast as NY Lorenz Tate politician with “connections”. Also look for tate in the Summer 17 film “Best Man Holiday”!!! Hope you had a chance to see the New Edition Mini-series on BET. Next up for the star treatment is Jodeci
according to group Member Mr. Dalvin. Look for this on BET’s sister station VH-1! Finally there is a petition to have 105.7 Morning Man Steve Harvey because he took the opportunity to meet with Donald Trump. My thought is LEAVE STEVE ALONE. It was time to stand up BEFORE the election and this carpet bagger becoming President. I’d love to meet with the Donald, but would probably end up with Omaroosa who’s just been appointed White House Communications Director! Lawd have mercy! Happy Birthday to YOU and celebs this week:Chris Rock 52, Bobby Brown 48, The Big Show 45, Kevin Gates 31, Michael B. Jordan 29 and “Blackish” Star Yara Shahidi is 16! Welcoming Refugees in the Midst of a Travel Ban
On January 27, 2017, just a week after his inauguration, President Trump signed an executive order implementing a travel ban for entry to the United States for travelers from seven countries: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The order was signed hastily and has had disastrous ramifications. Alarmingly, the travel ban also includes those who have a valid visa from one of those seven countries, and there have been reports of people being detained from countries off of this list. It is becoming a Muslim Ban, fulfilling the worst of Donald Trump’s promises during his divisive campaign. Exclusivity of this nature does not represent us as a people and country. If Donald Trump’s Administration does not reverse course, we will be remembered as a nation made up of immigrants that lost its values due to hate and fear. In a White House press release, the President attempted to justify his insensitivity to humanity by stating, “the United States must be vigilant during the visa-issuance process to ensure that those approved for admission do not intend to harm Americans and that they have no ties to terrorism.” Under the executive order the U.S. refugee program is suspended for 120 days while indefinitely not allowing refugees to enter from Syria. What is disheartening to me, is that these are suffering humans who have risked everything to flee persecution and danger, and they have already undergone a nearly two year rigorous vetting process in order to enter the U.S. Nevertheless, all of the sudden thousands are being turned away due to this hasty and hateful ban. When refugees arrive to our country and here in the Dallas area they are welcomed by generous families, church members, and citizens who work with nonprofits who help them become acclimated to a new city and country, enroll their children in schools, assist them in learning English and applying for jobs so they can 13
fully participate in our democracy. They appreciate America and came here to contribute to American life—they should not be greeted with hostility. In Dallas and North Texas we have opened our doors to refugees fleeing war and persecution and famine and poverty – welcoming them to our community, because we believe. People deserve peace, no matter where they come from. Parents should not have to shelter or hinder their children from adventure because of the dangers that await them. Additionally, children should be able to receive a quality education. These are basic privileges that we so often take for granted in America, not realizing that refugees are seeking to have a more fulfilled life and become contributors of society instead of hidden beings. Our communities are not threatened by our immigrant and refugee brothers and sisters; in fact they have allowed us to reflect on who we are as people by showing compassion and truly living out the foundation this nation was built
issuu.com/bitsandpieces
upon. We will continue to respect religious differences and I will promote dialogue between citizens of the community through our annual workshops that promote awareness around Refugee Day. Perhaps there is some underlying fear my Republican colleagues have with the arrival of immigrants and refugees – noting the newest bill being proposed to curtail the number of legal immigrants allowed to enter the country. As the travel ban is currently under review in the lower courts, the Trump administration is seeking a reversal of its temporary suspension to move forward. However, instead of continuously stoking the fears of innocent Americans, we need to remember that there are people around the world and whom we live among that are attempting to live a better life. The North Texas and Dallas community continues to prosper because of how immigrants and refugees contribute positively to our community and help us build a stronger state and nation.
