During a recent conversation, BishopVashti Murphy McKenzie’s name came up as folks expressed excitement about the news that she would be moving to Texas. While I have known about this dynamic sister for decades now, it wasn’t until I became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., that I really began to recognize how brilliant she is. From the very beginning, she left a positive impression on me and I have always held her in high regard. In 1985, it was a pregnant Vashti who soothed our sisterhood during the tragic crash of Delta Flight 191 at DFW Airport. That flight had several sorority members aboard who were traveling to our national Cheryl Smith convention in Dallas. It is an understatement to refer to the convention site as emotionally charged. There was business to take care of and programming that had taken countless of hours and resources to produce and execute and all the while thoughts were on those who had lost their lives or loved ones. It wasn’t uncommon to see someone being comforted. At times it seemed overwhelming, especially for me since in addition to a classmate from FAMU losing her parents and brother on the flight, one of the sorority members on board was also a FAMU Rattler as were her two sons and daughter-in-law who attended school with me. Every day, during the convention and for about two weeks later until her death, we were at the hospital with Dr. Kathleen Cooper Wright’s family, offering support and comfort. Soror McKenzie was a guiding force of reason and inspiration as members and others impacted tried to cope with the tragedy. Her strong spirit and dynamic messages are legendary and if you were in Dallas in August 1985, you could understand why. In 1988, when the Elusive Ladies were celebrating our 10th anniversary as members of the public service organization that we had pledged a lifetime commitment to, I made a personal appeal to our sister to come and share a message that would help us as we continued to grow, not only as sorority members, but as Christian women. Her message, as always, was strong, uplifting, insightful and definitely on point. Over the years, I have heard her on numerous occasions. She is the National Chaplain for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and when the clergy is mentioned in a positive way, her name is definitely included. I, like others, shared in her triumphant and historic ascension as she shattered the “stained-glass ceiling,” and received accolades from around the world. Most recently, the dynamic Bishop McKenzie has folks abuzz across the state of Texas. The talk is not only from members of the sorority that her grandmother, Vashti Turley Murphy, was one of 22 founders of 99 years ago. The first woman elected Bishop in the history of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, this former journalist is highly revered around the world. Never known for being overly loquacious, Bishop McKenzie has gained a reputation for saying what needs to be said and knowing just when and how it needs to be said. She attended the University of Maryland College Park, Howard University and United Theological Seminary in Ohio and her family’s contribution to society is significant, especially if you take into consideration the historic Afro newspapers or her work in Africa. Not only was she the host of the General Conference - 49th Quadrennial Session of the AME Church, held at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee recently. She made headlines. The announcement of her appointment to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, serving Texas, was met with praise and sadness as Texans expressed excitement and members of the 13th Episcopal District encompassing Kentucky and Tennessee wished her well in her new home. She’s on FaceBook and Twitter and describes herself as “Preacher, bishop, author, reader, thinker, pod caster, creative, lover of God, family, life and dachshunds.” Married to former NBA star Stan McKenzie, and mother of three, Bishop McKenzie makes this world a better place by her mere presence. I’m excited about her move to Dallas. She recently tweeted: “Ok where are the best places to rejuvenate in the Big D in the Big T? On my way to Dallas to serve the Lord with gladness!” Texas is often referred to as the “buckle” on the Bible Belt.” Well, that buckle just got some serious bling added to it because Bishop McKenzie is bonafide and the excitement about her impending arrival is contagious. Let’s meet and greet her with open arms and get ready because I surmise there will be quite a bit of rejuvenating going on! Welcome to Dallas, Bishop McKenzie. We need you!

ELECTION
2012 On the Campaign Trail This a speech by Gov. Mitt Romney at the NAACP Convention that outlines his thoughts and policies if he is elected President.
Moments ago, Mitt Romney spoke at the NAACP Convention in Houston, Texas. Below is a transcript of his remarks, as prepared for delivery. Note- there are some additions that Mr. Romney made. Thank you, Bishop Graves, for your generous introduction. Thanks also to President Ben Jealous and Chairman Roslyn Brock for the opportunity to be here this morning, and for your hospitality. It is an honor to address you. I appreciate the chance to speak first – even before Vice President Biden gets his turn tomorrow. I just hope the Obama campaign won’t think you’re playing favorites. You all know something of my background, and maybe you’ve wondered how any Republican ever becomes governor of Massachusetts in the first place. Well, in a state with 11 percent Republican registration, you don’t get there by just talking to Republicans. We have to make our case to every voter. We don’t count anybody out, and we sure don’t make a habit of presuming anyone’s support. Support is asked for and earned – and that’s why I’m here today. With 90 percent of African-Americans voting for Democrats, some of you may wonder why a Republican would bother to campaign in the African American community, and to address the NAACP. Of course, one reason is that I hope to represent all Americans, of every race, creed or sexual orientation, from the poorest to the richest and everyone in between. But there is another reason: I believe that if you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best PAGE 4

interest of African American families, you would vote for me for president. I want you to know that if I did not believe that my policies and my leadership would help families of color — and families of any color — more than the policies and leadership of President Obama, I would not be running for president. The opposition charges that I and people in my party are running for office to help the rich. Nonsense. The rich will do just fine whether I am elected or not. The President wants to make this a campaign about blaming the rich. I want to make this a campaign about helping the middle class. I am running for president because I know that my policies and vision will help hundreds of millions of middle class Americans of all races, will lift people from poverty, and will help prevent people from becoming poor. My campaign is about helping the people who need help. The course the President has set has not done that – and will not do that. My course will. When President Obama called to congratulate me on becoming the presumptive Republican nominee, he said that he, “looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America’s future.” To date, I’m afraid that his campaign has taken a different course than that. But, in campaigns at their best, voters can expect a clear choice, and candidates can expect a fair hearing – only more so from a venerable organization like this one. So, it is that healthy debate about the course of the nation that I want to discuss with you today. If someone had told us in the 1950s or 1960s that a black citizen would serve as the forty-fourth president, we would have been proud and many would have been surprised. Picturing that day, we might have assumed that the American presidency would be the very last door of opportunity to be opened. Before that came to pass, every other barrier on the path to equal opportunity would surely have come down. Of course, it hasn’t happened quite that way. Many barriers remain. Old inequities persist. In some ways, the challenges are even more complicated than before. And across America — and even within your own ranks — there are serious, honest debates about the way forward. If equal opportunity in America were an accomplished fact, then a chronically bad economy would be equally bad for everyone. Instead, it’s worse for African Americans in almost every way. The unemployment rate, the duration of unemployment, average income, and median family wealth are all worse for the black community. In June, while the overall unemployment rate remained stuck at 8.2 percent, the unemployment rate for African Americans actually went up, from 13.6 percent to 14.4 percent. Americans of every background are asking when this economy will finally recover – and you, in particular, are entitled to an answer. If equal opportunity in America were an accomplished fact, black families could send their sons and daughters to public schools that truly offer the hope of a better life. Instead, for generations, the African-American community has been waiting and waiting for that promise to be kept. Today, black children are 17 percent of students nationwide – but they are 42 percent of the students in our worst-performing schools.
Our society sends them into mediocre schools and expects them to perform with excellence, and that is not fair. Frederick Douglass observed that, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Yet, instead of preparing these children for life, too many schools set them up for failure. Everyone in this room knows that we owe them better than that. The path of inequality often leads to lost opportunity. College, graduate school, and first jobs should be milestones marking the passage from childhood to adulthood. But for too many disadvantaged young people, these goals seem unattainable – and their lives take a tragic turn. Many live in neighborhoods filled with violence and fear, and empty of opportunity. Their impatience for real change is understandable. They are entitled to feel that life in America should be better than this. They are told even now to wait for improvements in our economy and in our schools, but it seems to me that these Americans have waited long enough. The point is that when decades of the same promises keep producing the same failures, then it’s reasonable to rethink our approach – and consider a new plan. I’m hopeful that together we can set a new direction in federal policy, starting where many of our problems do – with the family. A study from the Brookings Institution has shown that for those who graduate from high school, get a full-time job, and wait until 21 before they marry and then have their first child, the probability of being poor is two percent. And if those factors are absent, the probability of being poor is 76 percent. Here at the NAACP, you understand the deep and lasting difference the family makes. Your former executive director, Dr. Benjamin Hooks, had it exactly right. The family, he said, “remains the bulwark and the mainstay of the black community. That great truth must not be overlooked.” Any policy that lifts up and honors the family is going to be good for the country, and that must be our goal. As President, I will promote strong families – and I will defend traditional marriage. As you may have heard from my opponent, I am also a believer in the freeenterprise system. I believe it can bring change where so many well-meaning government programs have failed. I’ve never heard anyone look around an impoverished neighborhood and say, “You know, there’s too much free enterprise around here. Too many shops, too many jobs, too many people putting money in the bank.” What you hear, of course, is how do we bring in jobs? How do we make good, honest employers want to move in and stay? And with the shape this economy is in, we’re asking that more than ever. Free enterprise is still the greatest force for upward mobility, economic security, and the expansion of the middle class. We have seen in recent years what it’s like to have less free enterprise. As President, I will show the good things that can happen when we have more – more business activity, more jobs, more opportunity, more paychecks, more savings accounts. On Day One, I will begin turning this economy around with a plan for the middle class. And I don’t mean just those who are middle class now – I also mean those who have waited so long for their chance to join the middle class. !

I know what it will take to put people back to work, to bring more jobs and better wages. My jobs plan is based on 25 years of success in business. It has five key steps. First, I will take full advantage of our energy resources, and I will approve the Keystone pipeline from Canada. Low cost, plentiful coal, natural gas, oil, and renewables will bring over a million manufacturing jobs back to the United States. Second, I will open up new markets for American products. We are the most productive major economy in the world, so trade means good jobs for Americans. But trade must be free and fair, so I’ll clamp down on cheaters like China and make sure that they finally play by the rules. Third, I will reduce government spending. Our high level of debt slows GDP growth and that means fewer jobs. If our goal is jobs, we must, must stop spending over a trillion dollars more than we earn. To do this, I will eliminate expensive non-essential programs like Obamacare, and I will work to reform and save Medicare and Social Security, in part by means-testing their benefits. Fourth, I will focus on nurturing and developing the skilled workers our economy so desperately needs and the future demands. This is the human capital with which tomorrow’s bright future will be built. Too many homes and too many schools are failing to provide our children with the skills and education that are essential for anything other than a minimum-wage job. And finally and perhaps most importantly, I will restore economic freedom. This nation’s economy runs on freedom, on opportunity, on entrepreneurs, on dreamers who innovate and build businesses. These entrepreneurs are being crushed by high taxation, burdensome regulation, hostile regulators, excessive healthcare costs, and destructive labor policies. I will work to make America the best place in the world for innovators and entrepreneurs and businesses small and large. Do these five things – open up energy, expand trade, cut the growth of government, focus on better educating tomorrow’s workers today, and restore economic freedom – and jobs will come back to America, and wages will rise again. The President will say he will do those things, but he will not, he cannot, and his record of the last four years proves it. If I am president, job one for me will be creating jobs. I have no hidden agenda. If you want a president who will make things better in the African American community, you are looking at him. Finally, I will address the institutionalized inequality in our education system. And I know something about this from my time as governor. In the years before I took office our state’s leaders had come together to pass bipartisan measures that were making a difference. In reading and in math, our students were already among the best in the nation – and during my term, they took over the top spot. Those results revealed what good teachers can do if the system will only let them. The problem was, this success wasn’t shared. A significant achievement gap between students of different races remained. So we set out to close it.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...
Don't Just Blame the Youth for the ‘N word’
JULY 13, 2012
Can people let Frank Ocean define his own sexuality?
By Hon. Cynthia McKinney On Saturday July 14, 2012 at 2 PM., at Black Spectrum Theatre, CEMOTAP will host a Free Forum with veteran lawmaker and courageous freedom fighter former the Honorarble Cynthia McKinney. Black Spectrum Theatre is located inside Roy Wilkins Park at Baisley Boulevard and 177th Street near Merrick Boulevard. McKinney is coming to address the topic of racism in the music and entertainment industry. McKinney is not only bringing with her a plan and a course of action but she is bringing with her two entertainment Industry insiders Leonard Rowe and Marcus Washington. Rowe and Washington will provide first hand testimony of how the racism in this industry robs our community artistically and economically. Their qualifications to do so cannot be questioned. Leonard Rowe was literally one of the biggest Black concert promoters in the industry until, the white mega promoters “White Balled him.” How big was Rowe?" He was asked at one point by Michael Jackson to handle Jackson's financial affairs. He says he was blocked from doing so by those who handled Jackson's affairs at the time of his death. Rowe has also authored a book that suggests that Michael was murdered by the people who wanted to rob Jackson of his multibillion music catalogue. Marcus Washington was one of only a handful of Blacks permitted to train as execs at the legendary William Morris Endeavor Agency. At one point Washington helped co-manage the career of 8 time grammy award nominee Jasmine Sullivan. Mr. Rowe, Mr Washington and Congresswoman McKinney have testimony that will inform and indeed hold the audience spellbound. They also come prepared with the outline of a simple action the community can take to reverse the tide of racism in this industry. Legendary Broadcaster Bernard White will M.C. the program. STUDY QUESTIONS Who is the white music industry exec who seduces Black stars and agency employees, then makes love while rhythmically calling them the N word? Answer: This Answer was provided from website Diary of a Hollywood Street King: http:// diaryofahollywoodstreetking.com/wme-cara-lewishistory-racial-prejudice/ “I can’t tell you the booking agency who I worked for because a few years back I was paid to sign a fiveyear confidentially agreement with the company, but I’ll say this — I know all about Marcus Washington’s boss Cara Lewis over at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, and guess what? I’m told Afro-American artists would sleep with her just to stay on her good side. According to several insider (artists signed to WME), Carla Lewis often drinks a entire bottle of Zinfandel before seducing some black artists — during which time she likes to repeat “Fuck me Nigger” over and over during the act.” 2. Which execs have been charged with calling their black contacts, monkeys, niggers, coons etc. Answer: The list is too long go to this website for a list submitted to the court http://innerstandingisness.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/ rowe-entertainment-inc-v-william-morris-agency-etal-98-8272-breakdown-of-racial-epithets-includingnigger-used-by-execs-at-wma-and-caa/ 3. Which exec refused to send a script for a movie about Navy Seals to Wesley Snipes because according to him "Everyone knows that blacks don’t swim?" What is the shocking connection of this last exec to President Obama? By Cleo Manago, CEO and founder of the Black Men's Xchange (BMX) African-American hip-hop artist Frank Ocean recently shared in a post on his Tumblr page that he had fallen in love with a man before. At the speed of sound, all available media space has been consumed with ill-informed presumptions about Mr. Ocean's identity and conception of his sexuality. In less than 24 hours everyone, particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) identified individuals, had defined his sexuality for him even though he has said nothing at all publicly on this issue to date. What we've witnessed is a profound chauvinism on the part of gay-identified individuals who cannot conceive of any identity outside of the limiting gay/straight binary. And in the process, they continue to obscure the rarely acknowledged reality that many Black men who love men are not comfortable with the LGBT or gay identity. Frank Ocean wrote that he fell in love with a man. It was a beautiful story about love lost, about the unique challenges of being a black man who loves another black man in a society that does not value the lives of black men. Mr. Ocean never articulates it in those terms, but as a man who has worked for more than three decades with black men who love men, I recognized the signs. And, importantly, he never used the words "gay" or "bisexual." He did however use the word "love." Five times, in fact. That's the beautiful honesty obscured here, and obscured every time the predominantly White gay movement and other gay-identified individuals label Black homosexuals and bisexuals without their consent. As quiet as it is kept, our society has more complexity than the predominately White-controlled media allows space to understand. People, especially African Americans, need to understand that many African Americans do not consider LGBT or gay to be inclusive nor culturally affirming. And this is not always because they are in denial
of their sexuality or that they wish they were heterosexual, contrary to what you might hear in the mainstream media. The reality is that there are many African American men that prefer being in spaces that affirm their Blackness, rather than associating with an often racist "LGBT" community. Africans Americans are not the architects of the LGBT movement. They are, if anything, just used in advertisements to create the impression of inclusion that is not always there. Recently, Queen Latifah headlined the 29th Annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival. Following her appearance, like with Mr. Ocean, an avalanche of LGBTidentity associations was made about Latifah. She soon corrected everyone explaining that she was not "coming out" as a "lesbian" but was just being supportive. Latifah and Ocean are the products of deeply African-American art forms and cultures. Latifah is a highly respected figure from hip-hop's golden age and Frank Ocean is a member of the hip-hop collective, Odd Future. They are not highly assimilated individuals, culturally speaking. Both are still quite "Black" in how they "represent." It is entirely possible that, as a result, they are unwilling to adopt the LGBT identity because it holds no cultural capital for them. And there is nothing wrong with their decision to do so. In fact, it's a sign of radical self-determination that is all too rare in our so-called "postracial" America. Often Black men identify as gay because it's the only identity that they think is available to them. They believe they have no other choice; that there is only gay, bi, and "straight." And that can seem better than being an abomination in the eyes of a so-called Christian God and demonized by people in a church. But there have been important same-gender-loving (SGL) Black men who have articulated an identity that is their own, that affirms their Blackness. Great, African American writer and freedom fighter James Baldwin, known as an openly homosexual,
Cleo Manago Founder and CEO of the Black Men's Xchange
never aligned himself with the gay movement. Such a move is not meant to be adversarial, though it is often misconstrued as such because there has been much invested in the [basicallyWhite] "gay" movement. The point is, we still have too much to learn or acknowledge about African-American homosexual and bisexual people. Our stories have been ignored or told by other people in a way that erases our cultural heritage and specificity. Homosexuals and bisexual people are no more monolithic culturally than heterosexuals are. That richness needs to be acknowledged, respected and "held" so all people, African American people especially, can have unfettered opportunity to love and embrace themselves in culturally affirming ways. I hope Mr. Ocean too realizes that he can do this and not be seduced by the media avalanche that keeps telling us who and what he is based on someone else's agenda. Cleo Manago is founder and CEO of the Black Men's Xchange (BMX) (http:// www.bmxnational.org/), the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to promoting healthy self-concept and behavior among same gender loving (SGL), gay-identifying and bisexual Africandescended males.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce and RecruitMilitary to present Veteran Job Expo in Dallas area The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the military-to-civilian recruitment firm RecruitMilitary will collaborate on a hiring event for military veterans at the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex), on Thursday, July 19. This event, a Hiring Our Heroes/RecruitMilitary Veteran Opportunity Expo, will be part of a nationwide initiative to increase the hiring of veterans by producing special career fair hiring events. Union Institute and University will sponsor the event, which will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. RecruitMilitary is inviting veterans who already have civilian work experience, men and women who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, members of the National Guard and reserves, military spouses, and other military family members. Hiring Our Heroes events are part of a nationwide initiative launched by the U.S. Chamber in March 2011 to increase the hiring of veterans and military spouses. In the first 11 months of the initiative, Hiring Our Heroes hosted more than 100 events in 45 states and the
District of Columbia. The Chamber plans 400 events in 2012. RecruitMilitary and the Chamber expect more than 70 employers, franchisors, educational institutions, and government agencies to reserve exhibitor booths at the Expo in Irving. Already signed up are Union Institute and University, The Home Depot, Verizon Communications, the City of Irving, Capital One, Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club, Ryder System Inc., The Kroger Company, The Prudential Insurance Company of America, the National Veterans Employment Program (NVEP) of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, DeVry University, Grand Canyon University, Citigroup, GE Transportation, H&E Equipment Services Inc., M1 Support Services LP, Airstreams Renewables, Farmers Insurance DFW Career Center, Hilton Worldwide, Don Davis Auto Group, BP Sales Inc., Defense Contract Management Agency, MasTec Advanced Technologies, VOLT Workforce Solutions, C.R. To maximize the number of employers participating in this event as well as the job opportunities for veterans and military spouses, RecruitMilitary is offering companies that are members of the U.S. Chamber and local chambers a 10% discount on the cost of their
exhibition booths. RecruitMilitary will offer further price reductions for small businesses (businesses that have less than 50 employees), and even lower rates for veteran-owned small businesses. “This is an especially great year to hire veterans – new tax credits for doing so apply throughout the year,” said Larry Slagel, Senior Vice President of Sales at RecruitMilitary and a former captain in the United States Marine Corps. “The credits are available via the Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 (www.doleta.gov/ business/incentives/opptax/), which President Obama signed into law on November 21, 2011. The credits range from $2,400 to $9,600.” The Vow to Hire Heroes Act also established a new target group of unemployed veterans. This group is similar to a group defined in the Recovery Act of 2009, which has expired. One major difference is that, under the Recovery Act, a veteran had to have left the service within 5 years of the hiring date to qualify. The Vow to Hire Heroes Act imposes no such limit.
PARALLELS AND CONTRASTS: Three African American Artists at the MADI July 2012: PARALLELS AND CONTRASTS: Three African American Artists at the MADI opens July 20 at the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art with an opening reception from 5:30-7:30PM. Curated by Phillip Collins, the exhibition compares and contrasts 30 works by three African American artists. A collection of bold and subtle colors with majestic forms and shapes in composition with repetitious lines by artists Kevin Cole, Albert Shaw, and Jack White come together for a first at the Museum. Collectively their work indicates areas where African American art intersects elements of MADI art: Movement, Abstraction, Dimension, and Invention Utilizing found objects, and African elements designs and patterns combined with personal and social messages inspired by historic events of Africans in American history, Cole, Shaw, and White continue Locke’s mandate by creating honest esthetic expressions to identify and define African American culture. Kevin Cole works in various mediums which includes wood, tar paper, etched aluminum, among others. With a specific theme in mind, Cole works in series. He employs repetitive forms, textures and colors based on the theme of the series’ focus. Cole creates three dimensional structures that invite those who experience his work to reflect upon abstracted references to a necktie used for status, beauty, fashion and the destruction of human life.

Cole was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He received a B.S. degree in art education from the University of Arkansas, Pine, Bluff, Arkansas; an M.F. degree in Art Education and Painting 1983, from the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois, and an M.F.A. degree in 1985 from Northern Illinois, in DeKalb, Illinois. Cole lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. Albert Shaw: “My influence comes from outside the arena. It is inspired by history, myth, ritual, fantasy nature, and icons from ancient civilizations influenced by the tribal art of the Dogon and Yoruba tribes of West Africa.” Shaw’s work has evolved as a result of studying African textiles and observing Egyptian, Nubian, and South American pyramids. The repetitious ziggurat line formations in his paintings are base on a grid system he created to give his composition structure. The lines are less hard edge and have become more colorful and symbolic to recall African textiles. His work is in the San Angelo Art Museum Collection and the African American Museum among others national corporations. Shaw has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in museums, art centers, and galleries nationwide. In 1989, Albert Shaw had a major solo exhibition, Reflection: Images of Power and Ritual at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, New York. The exhibit featured drawings, paintings, and collages. Shaw was born in Marshall, Texas. After graduation from Pemberton High School, he attended and received a BFA degree in Studio Arts at North Texas State University (now University of North Texas) in Denton, Texas. Albert Shaw lives in Dallas, Texas. Jack White’s wood assemblage paintings reflect penetrating resemblances to MADI art. However, his intents refer to original African sources that have inspired not only African American artists but Western European artists as well. White was born in Benson, North Carolina. At an early age, with his family, White moved to Raleigh where he studied mechanical drawing and wood-working at the George Washington High School. He received his B.S. in Art/education from Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland. White worked as an artist in various art centers and programs in upstate New York. Eventually as an African American Fellow, he did graduate work in Museum Studies at Syracuse University. Like earlier African American artist, White lived in Europe for an extended period in Greece. Currently, White lives and works in Austin, Texas The Museum of Geometric and MADI Art is located 3109 Carlisle Street, Dallas, TX 75204 www.geometricmadimuseum.org !

It’s your business Atlanta Black Power Couple comes to Centric Network Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) -- Riding the wave of their success as entrepreneurs, Atlanta's ultimate power couple, Robert and Nicola Jackson has now moved into the realm of reality television as stars on the new reality docu-series, Amateur Millionaires Club. The show, which premieres on July 7th, 2012 at 9.00pm EST on the BET-owned cable network Centric, features the lives of ten (10) AfricanAmerican millionaires, who made Robert their fortunes and Nicola Jackson using the multi-level marketing business model. The show offers a fresh and exhilarating behind-the-scenes look at these self-made millionaires, and tells the stories of their rise to affluence and the challenges of maintaining their new status. Robert and Nicola, along with their Amateur Millionaires Club co-stars Stormy Wellington, Chyna Bethley, Dorothy Cook, Kenny Lloyd, Twiler Portis & other cast members heated up the red carpet at the 2012 BET Awards. Robert Jacksons swag level was turned up with his flashy tailored suit from his upcoming Robert Jackson fashion line, while Nicola's dress from her Nikki J signature line was described as "just stunning" by a top fashion media outlet. Robert and Nicola Jackson are doting parents of four sons, while also leading a multi-million dollar sales force of over 200,000 people in more than 30 countries across the globe, as Platinum Presidents of Ardyss International, one of the world's fastest growing health and wellness network marketing companies. In addition, the super couple is each involved in several other business ventures. Robert manages a successful construction company in the Atlanta area while Nicola, a former hair stylist, has launched her own hair line, the Nikki J Hair Collection and is a savvy real estate investor, author and sought-after motivational speaker. Following on the heels of Nicola's successful book, "Inside the Millionaire's Vault," Robert is preparing for the release of his new book on how to be a healthy, wealthy man. As parents of a 15 year old son with cerebral palsy, Robert and Nicola are also actively involved with many charitable causes and non-profit organizations, promoting research on cerebral palsy and offering support and encouragement for families of children with special needs. The Jackson story however, is not a one of being born into extravagance. The Jacksons have emerged from a history of health and economic challenges. Just a few years ago, Robert had a typical 9 to 5 and managed his own small business while Nicola worked long hours in her hair salon to provide for their family. "You can't expect to PAGE 9

Controversial dating site says they accept only “good-looking” Blacks Charlotte, NC (BlackNews.com) -- According to a recent study, even though a large number of black singles meet through college, about 64 percent of married couples meet through friends, relatives, and online dating services. Thanks to a new, exclusive online dating site, African Americans will now be able to meet potential dates who have been filtered and classified as "good-looking." "To be considered for membership, a prospect must submit a profile along with an attached photograph," says J.C Dixon, founder for the new site called AttractiveBlackSingles.com. "Existing members of the site vote on the approval of new prospects. Once a prospect is voted in, they are entitled to enjoy all the luxuries of the community as an accepted member." The launching of the new dating site could prove to have perfect timing. According to NDP Group, an industry leader in research, tracking, and global trends, about 40 million Americans use online dating services, and more than half of that number includes black singles. Dixon explains that the main goal of the website is to assist the black dating community by matching attractive black people with other attractive people. "Anyone can apply for a membership, but gaining acceptance is tough," Dixon states, before adding that, "For every 10 applicants that apply for a membership, only two make the cut." Tamera Johnson, 32, of Houston, says she's thrilled to hear about a dating site that's not only targeted toward black singles, but also has a rigorous screening process. "I've tried dating sites, but the one thing that I hate is the lack of good-looking people actually on

those sites," stresses Johnson. "If this site is what it claims, then I will definitely give it a try." Dixon notes that common complaints like Johnson's within the black singles community, is one of the main reasons why AttractiveBlackSingles.com was created. "No longer do I have to hear complaints about how 30 minutes or more may waste away going through an inbox filled with messages from people hoping to get lucky," Dixon notes.

It was inspired by the belief that what we do – helping kids learn – empowers them. We help kids feel confident. We help them feel like super heroes as they become super readers and super learners," says Richard H. Collins, Chairman and CEO of Istation. The new website improves and enhances the user experience with easier to use navigation menus and clearer images. 1947-2012
Jeremiah Joe Sinnah-Yovonie was born January 1, 1947 to Madie and Sinnah Yovonie. His father was chief and had many wives so Jere had many blood brothers and sisters, as well as many who lived as brothers and sisters in their compound in Sierra Leone. He lived a happy childhood in Senehun, often sneaking to his grandma Ada with whom he had a special relationship. His father was unwilling to pay for secondary school fees, so he independently studied and did well on the secondary exams. A promised scholarship to Uganda did not materialize so he took an opportunity to come to a Methodist college in Iowa -- the first in his family to study in the U.S. Jere had less than twenty dollars in his pocket when he arrived. Even that was a miracle made possible by Pastor B.K. Williams’ and Paul Lahai’s contributions. Upon arrival, Charles Carew introduced him to Pastor Dick and Mary Pfaltzgraff, who acted as his parents in Iowa. He attended Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa where he met Darlene Kloster. They became soul mates as they worked together on the social issues of the day...peace in Vietnam, racial relations and ending apartheid in South Africa. Due to finances, Jere transferred to Kalamazoo College, in Michigan. Despite his finances, his belief in education allowed him to turn around and encourage others to come here to study. Jere developed a huge American family as he begged for help for young Sierra Leoneans to be educated. Special praises are due to the Pfaltzgraffs, the Phillips and Dr. Nelson for their responses. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1973, Jere and Darlene were married and began graduate work at the University of Iowa. From there, the kid who had never been to secondary school, who had no money or “connections” completed his doctorate degree from Ivy League Colombia University. With this kind of miracle, he wanted to do ministry as well, so after touring the 12 Methodist seminaries he chose to come to Perkins at SMU where he received his theological degree. Promised jobs did not materialize when it was discovered he was in an interracial marriage. This disappointment led to his loss of enchantment for America and the Methodist church. Despite this, he worked as a Parole Officer and then Professor and International Student Director at Bishop College. He was overjoyed to welcome three wonderful children, Ada, Emma, and Jeremiah, all the while bringing many family and students from all over the world to better themselves and in the process joining the big Yovonie family. From there he had the opportunity to become Director for Global Missions for the Lutheran Church in Chicago. This inspired him to return to his home to develop the

Maria Hawkins Cole was born August 1, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts. A jazz singer, she died of cancer. She met singer Nat King Cole, while she was singing with Duke Ellington’s band. Though Maria Cole performed briefly with both Count Basie and swing music innovator Fletcher Henderson, her big break came with Duke Ellington, Mr. “A-Train” himself. After hearing tapes of Cole singing, Ellington hired Maria as a vocalist with his legendary orchestra. She stayed with him until 1946 when she began soloing at the city’s Club Zanzibar as an opening act for the Mills Brothers. She was married three times: Spurgeon Ellington: she and Spurgeon, an Army Air Force serviceman and a famed Tuskegee Airmen flyer during World War II, were married from March 1943 until his death during a military accident in December 1945. Nat and Maria were married on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948 at Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church. Reverend Adam Clayton Powell, Jr was the officiant at their wedding. They had five children. Gary DeVore: After Nat King Cole's death, she married writer and producer Gary DeVore on October 17, 1969 in Los Angeles, California. They divorced in June 1976. She produced a James Baldwin play, sang on the “Ed Sullivan Show,” and created the Cole Cancer Foundation. In 1987, she was interviewed by her daughter Natalie and singer Johnny Mathis for a PBS special on Nat. In 1990 both Maria and Natalie accepted a Grammy lifetime achievement award for her late husband. Over the years, she has contributed to her community through charities including the National Kidney Foundation, the Urban League and the Cardiac Research Foundation.

Romney brings message to NAACP continued from page 4 I urged faster interventions in failing schools, and the funding to go along with it. I promoted math and science excellence in schools, and proposed paying bonuses to our best teachers. I refused to weaken testing standards, and instead raised them. To graduate from high school, students had to pass an exam in math and English – I added a science requirement as well. And I put in place a merit scholarship for those students who excelled: the top 25 percent of students in each high school were awarded a John and Abigail Adams Scholarship – which meant four years tuition-free at any Massachusetts public institution of higher learning. When I was governor, not only did test scores improve – we also narrowed the achievement gap. The teachers unions were not happy with a number of these reforms. They especially did not like our emphasis on choice through charter schools, particularly for our inner city kids. Accordingly, the legislature passed a moratorium on any new charter schools. As you know, in Boston, in Harlem, in Los Angeles, and all across the country, charter schools are giving children a chance, children that otherwise could be locked in failing schools. I was inspired just a few weeks ago by the students in one of Kenny Gamble’s charter schools in Philadelphia. Right here in Houston is another success story: the Knowledge Is Power Program,
which has set the standard, thanks to the groundbreaking work of the late Harriet Ball. These charter schools are doing a lot more than closing the achievement gap. They are bringing hope and opportunity to places where for years there has been none. Charter schools are so successful that almost every politician can find something good to say about them. But, as we saw in Massachusetts, true reform requires more than talk. As Governor, I vetoed the bill blocking charter schools. But our legislature was 87 percent Democrat, and my veto could have been easily over-ridden. So I joined with the Black Legislative Caucus, and their votes helped preserve my veto, which meant that new charter schools, including some in urban neighborhoods, would be opened. When it comes to education reform, candidates cannot have it both ways – talking up education reform, while indulging the same groups that are blocking reform. You can be the voice of disadvantaged publicschool students, or you can be the protector of special interests like the teachers unions, but you can’t be both. I have made my choice: As president, I will be a champion of real education reform in America, and I won’t let any special interest get in the way. I will give the parents of every lowincome and special needs student the chance to choose where their child goes to school. For the first time in history, federal education funds will be linked to a student, so that parents can send their child to any public or charter school, or to a private school, where
permitted. And I will make that a true choice by ensuring there are good options available to all. Should I be elected President, I’ll lead as I did when I was governor. I am pleased today to be joined today by Reverend Jeffrey Brown, who was a member of my kitchen cabinet in Massachusetts that helped guide my policy and actions that affected the African American community. I will look for support wherever there is good will and shared conviction. I will work with you to help our children attend better schools and help our economy create good jobs with better wages. I can’t promise that you and I will agree on every issue. But I do promise that your hospitality to me today will be returned. We will know one another, and work to common purposes. I will seek your counsel. And if I am elected president, and you invite me to next year’s convention, I would count it as a privilege, and my answer will be yes. The Republican Party’s record, by the measures you rightly apply, is not perfect. Any party that claims a perfect record doesn’t know history the way you know it. Yet always, in both parties, there have been men and women of integrity, decency, and humility who called injustice by its name. For every one of us a particular person comes to mind, someone who set a standard of conduct and made us better by their example. For me, that man is my father, George Romney.
It wasn’t just that my Dad helped write the civil rights provision for the Michigan Constitution, though he did. It wasn’t just that he helped create Michigan’s first civil rights commission, or that as governor he marched for civil rights in Detroit – though he did those things, too. More than these public acts, it was the kind of man he was, and the way he dealt with every person, black or white. He was a man of the fairest instincts, and a man of faith who knew that every person was a child of God. I’m grateful to him for so many things, and above all for the knowledge of God, whose ways are not always our ways, but whose justice is certain and whose mercy endures forever. Every good cause on this earth relies in the end on a plan bigger than ours. “Without dependence on God,” as Dr. King said, “our efforts turn to ashes and our sunrises into darkest night. Unless his spirit pervades our lives, we find only what G. K. Chesterton called ‘cures that don’t cure, blessings that don’t bless, and solutions that don’t solve.’” Of all that you bring to the work of today’s civil rights cause, no advantage counts for more than this abiding confidence in the name above every name. Against cruelty, arrogance, and all the foolishness of man, this spirit has carried the NAACP to many victories. More still are up ahead, and with each one we will be a better nation. Thank you, and God bless you all.

Conference speakers show correlation between positive self-worth, successful relationships By Donald Lee Special to I MESSENGER
If you missed this past Saturday’s Christian Couples Conference — which was also streamed “live” over the Internet — you missed a treat. My good friend Dr. Aimee Colbert and I shared with attendees and others watching the conference via Internet some awesome nuggets of godly wisdom that catered to married couples, singles and divorcees. “If you look at our homes, 73 percent of our households are one-parent families; 71 percent of them are (run by) moms,” said Bruce Lee, an attendee at the event held at Grace Church in Haltom City, just north of Fort Worth. “Then there’s no father figure or male figure around to teach our young men how to be men, how to treat a lady. So, when you have a conference like that, where you have couples and singles going out to such an event, they learn some of the things that should’ve been taught in the home.” And that’s exactly what went on Saturday. Colbert and I shared with our audience the importance of having a strong family unit and how a strong sense of self-worth is the key to having successful relationships. When the home is tight, and children are taught values pleasing to Christ, then they grow up and eventually enter into wholesome marriages.
Dr. Aimee Colbert
Bruce Lee attended the Couples Conference.
“I thought the conference went well; I loved the intimacy of the environment and how relaxed it was,” Colbert said. “I felt at home and I know that our guests did, too. Not only were the responses great, but I felt great. I can’t wait until the next time. I’m fired up!” Colbert shared with single men in the audience how to tell the mood of a woman when they’re out on a date. Body gestures offer so much insight into what a woman is thinking while on that date, Colbert said. In a comment that drew a lot of laughs, Colbert said when a woman is seated at the table at a restaurant, the man should be observant. Notice how her feet are positioned. If her feet are pointed toward the door, chances are she’s decided you’re not the one.“Dr. Aimee did a phenomenal job talking about body
gestures. That hit home with me,” Lee said. “Now, you can understand when you’re sitting down talking to somebody and you’re wondering why they are making body gestures. You try to figure out what’s going on.” Conference attendees and those watching the conference online were treated to great information regarding knowing the kinds of questions to ask one’s mate before marriage and the different signs that indicate that a particular person isn’t marriage material. One of the things near and dear to my heart is sharing wisdom with men and women as it relates to first having an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ before trying to enter into a romantic relationship with someone else. A person’s commitment, his or her devotion, to Christ is a strong indication
that that person would be a wise choice for a mate. And equally so is that a casual relationship with the Lord — or no relationship with Him at all — is a red flag that should never be ignored. We shared with married couples biblically based, yet practical, information on how to take their marriage to a whole other level through appreciating what each has to offer the other. “I’ve been to so many different seminars. I’ve worked with so many different kids and families,” Lee said. “But the way the conference was brought out made it really easy to understand and to relate to some of my issues and some of my problems. It broke it down; selfexplanatory.” In fact, we’re so pleased with how this first conference went, we’ve already begun planning a second one, which will be in October. In the meantime, if you missed the conference, visit our Web site at http:// www.christiancouplesconference.com. You can watch highlights from the conference as well as order CDs. We’re looking forward to seeing your face in the place at the next one. Donald Lee is founder-pastor of Kingdom Living Christian Center in Dallas and a free-lance journalist. He also is co-author of “Married to Commitment,” a powerful book on relationships and commitment. Pastor Lee may be reached at pastordonjlee@yahoo.com or (225) 773-2248, if you have questions about the next Christian Couples Conference.
Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship to host 'No More Excuses' Men's Conference Saturday Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship will host the "No More Excuses" men's conference this weekend. A crowd of about 2,000 men is expected at a time when the divorce rate is high, the marriage rate is down and polls say that about half of Americans support same-sex marriage. Individual sessions cover topics such as defining biblical manhood, mastering your role as a man, husband and/or father and leaving a divine legacy for your family. Dr. Tony Evans, pastor of the 9,000member Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church and author of "Kingdom Man," will be the main speaker. Dr. Evans has written more than 50 books and PAGE 13

booklets, including "How Should Christians Vote?" In 2006, Christianity Today International named Dr. Evans one of the 10 most influential pastors of the past 50 years, along with the likes of Billy Graham and Rick Warren. Dr. Evans recently appeared on CNN, National Public Radio and other media outlets to express his disappointment in President Barack Obama's decision to endorse same-sex marriage. The conference is Saturday, July 14 from 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m., Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, 1808 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Dallas 75232. Admission is free
with a donation to the church food pantry, but all attendees must register. Dr. Evans is one of the country’s most respected leaders in evangelical circles. Millions of lives have been changed by his unique ability to present simple, yet profound real-life illustrations to communicate biblical principles that transform the way people think, and ultimately, how they live. He is a strong advocate for rebuilding communities and racial reconciliation. Many prominent Republicans and Democrats in Texas and the United States support his initiatives. Growing up in the inner city of Baltimore, MD, Tony Evans knows firsthand the challenges urban families face in trying to rise above their circumstances. His life was forever changed when his father discovered the life-giving power of faith and recognized the link between faith in God and good works for the improvement of his family. It was the elder Evans’ Godly example !
that led his oldest son, Tony, to preaching and teaching the uncompromised Word of God. He, along with his wife, Lois, established Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in 1976 with only 10 people, in their home. Serving as senior pastor for the last 35 years, Evans has seen his church grow from 10 members to over 9,000 congregants with 100 plus ministries. Dr. Evans also serves as president of The Urban Alternative, a national ministry that seeks to bring about spiritual renewal in America through the church. His daily radio broadcast, The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans, can be heard on more than 500 stations daily throughout the United States and in more than 40 countries. The broadcast can also be seen on several television networks. A dynamic speaker, Dr. Evans regularly appears at crusades and bible conferences in the United States and abroad. !

But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) – there is no one Quaid can trust, except possibly a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) working for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy). The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. The film is directed by Len Wiseman. The screenplay is by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback and the screen story is by Ronald Shusett & Dan O’Bannon and Jon Povill and Kurt Wimmer. The producers are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe. !

(WASHINGTON)—On the floor, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) voted against H.R. 6079, the “Repeal Obamacare Act.” During debate over the measure, Ranking Member Conyers lead Judiciary Democrats in opposition to the bill. This marks the 31st time House Republican leadership has held a vote on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which created landmark new protections for America’s families and will extend health care coverage to over 30 million Americans. The measure passed the House 244 – 185 but is unlikely to be considered by the Senate. President Obama has threatened to veto the bill. “Today rather than considering jobs legislation, House Republican leadership decided to throw what amounts to a political temper tantrum over the Supreme Court’s recent ruling,” said Conyers. “And while the Republicans have spent this Congress in a perpetual frenzy to repeal ‘Obamacare’, they have consistently failed to offer an alternative other than a return to the previous status quo where insurance companies are in charge and American families go without the important protections included in the Affordable Care Act. “Luckily, the one good thing about this bill is that it will die in the Senate and the landmark protections instituted by the Affordable Care Act will remain law. That means 6.6 million children under the age of 26 can remain on their parents’ policy. Insurance companies can no longer deny 17 million children
coverage due to pre-existing conditions. And 105 million Americans will no longer have to face a lifetime limit on their coverage. “This bill is a distraction, and it diverts us from the work we should be doing for the American people: creating jobs and helping Americans make better lives for their families.”

EDUCATION NOTES
Alabama HBCU To Compete in World Choir Olympics Huntsville, AL (BlackNews.com) -The Aeolians Choir of Oakwood University (www.oakwood.edu) has been invited to, and will compete in the 7thWorld Choir Games - the world's largest international choral competition. It was announced by INTERKULTUR, the International Organizing Committee of the World Choir Games (www. 2012worldchoirgames.com) in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 11-13. The Aeolians will serve as the only Seventh-day Adventist and/or the only Alabama choir to participate in this biennial event, known as the "Olympics of choral music." Black-on-Black . . . love? HBCU Wilberforce University's Jeremy Winston Chorale will also compete. Chorale director Jeremy Winston is a former Oakwood Aeolian, choir-mate and very good friend of current Aeolians director, Jason Max Ferdinand. Hmmm., . . . a first-time, head-tohead duel of former Oakwood Aeoliansturned-HBCU-choral-directors . . . battling now on the world stage? According to Ferdinand the Oakwood choristers, the 2010 and 2011 national HBCU choir champions and, more recently, the sole U.S. performers in the seven-day Second International Moscow Christmas Festival of Sacred Music in Russia in January, will compete in three categories: Contemporary Music, Music of Religions and Negro Spirituals. "This also marks the first time ever the World Choir Games will be held in North America; previous venues were Austria, China, South Korea and Germany."
The World Choir Games takes place every two years. Approximately 20,000 participants, including 400 choirs from 70 countries, are expected to attend the 2012 Games. There will be competition in 23 musical categories, including Barbershop and Show Choirs, which have been added for the first time because of their popularity in the United States. The Longest Fight: In The Ring with Joe Gans, Boxing's First African American Champion
New Book Examines Life of the First American Black Athlete to Successfully Cross Nation's Racial Divide NEW YORK- Joe Gans was the first African American champion of the world —smart, trim, handsome, with a revered right hook. He was the first black man in Baltimore to own a car, and the saloon he owned was the first place in the city where blacks and whites mingled socially. And yet Gans—as interesting a sports hero as America has ever produced—is largely unknown today. The Longest Fight (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, June 2012) will change all that. Award-winning journalist William Gildea examines the life and career of
Gans, one of the seminal figures in the sport of boxing, whose courage in the face of discrimination, prefigured the strife faced by many of America's finest athletes, including Muhammad Ali, Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson. Gildea uses Gans' achievements in the ring to paint a deeply affecting account of what it was like to be an African American sports champion in the early twentieth century.
Today in America, a black man can be president. But a hundred years ago one could barely conceive of a black man being able to establish himself as the best in any walk of life. Gans succeeded despite smothering discrimination, wishing, even when he was champion, for "a white boy's chance in the world." The Longest Fight follows Gans' life from a waif on the Baltimore waterfront to the world champion he became, only to die young, at 35 from tuberculosis. The centerpiece of the book focuses on the 1906 boxing match between Gans and Oscar "Battling" Nelson. Promoted as a "battle of the races," the forty-two round fight became the longest boxing match of the twentieth century. The book not only explores what it was like for Gans to be the first black athlete to successfully cross the nation's gaping racial divide but also examines life for African Americans during the turn of the last century—a time of bigotry that outlived Gans.
