Message to the people...

INSIDE I MESSENGER

Summer is winding down for most of us and its back to school for August 17, 2012 millions of children. Unfortunately for many of our youth, the last time they picked up a book to read was during the last school year. They were not fortunate enough to participate in many of the summer programs, like the one that Bernadette Nuttall started, along with her sorority sister, Dianne Robinson, long before she became a Dallas Independent School District Board Trustee. Team IMAJ Located in the southern sector of Dallas, the program, keeps young 6 minds engaged and focused, instead of running wild and uncontrolled for the entire summer. Circle of Support, Inc. is a summer learning program focusing on Cheryl Smith science, math, art, reading and technology (S.M.A.R.T.) and serving over Leadership 250 area girls and boys. Although the two sorority sisters first focused on females, they expanded the program Principle to service young boys too. - Part 3 Using her expertise as a grant writer, Ms. Nuttall has been able to secure the funding needed to keep the program thriving. 7 What a great way for youth to spend the summer. In addition to strengthening their skills in very critical areas, the students participate in a well-rounded program that includes field trips and nutritional meals. In a week or so, those students, when they walk into the classrooms won’t be in foreign territory because they have had a very enriching summer where they were challenged and encouraged. In the past few weeks, I have listened to numerous teachers as they talked about the upcoming school year. It was refreshing to hear the teachers sound optimistic and excited. I hope they can maintain the same degree of enthusiasm as the year progresses because I know they definitely will be challenged. Bill Gates scholarships available Hopefully this will be a year when every student will come to 19 work, because it is their job, focused, respectful, inquisitive, and eager to learn. Maybe, just maybe the principals and administrators will continue to hold the teachers and counselors to the highest standard while also encouraging them along the way. Of course we want our teachers to be hell-bent on ensuring that each Ellis Cose comes to child that enters their classroom is given the best they have in an effort o educate them. Dallas for Sure we know some children are going to be rebels. There will be some problems, I’m sure. There are so TECO many challenges. Theatrical Then too, hopefully the parents will come to visit at school, and not just for athletic evens or Productions performances. We don’t need parents showing up in their pink hair rollers and bedroom slippers or their wifebeaters and reeking of marijuana -- ready to open a can of you know what on a teacher who had the 22 unmitigated gall to check your child when they are out of order. Every child won’t have the benefit of a productive summer that leads into a new school year. Some spent the entire summer, playing video games or soaking up hours in front of the television. Oh, there are so many horror stories to tell but I would rather focus on a positive future. When those doors open, the hot fun in the summertime period is over. There’s work to do and I am going to be looking for those success stories all year long, because I know they are out there. Adults, we have to step up and take charge. There’s no way we can expect the children to “govern themselves accordingly. We must show them the way and hold them accountable. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

HEALTHCARE BLOG PUBLISHES SPECIAL REPORT--

Leadership Principle-3

OBAMACARE VS. RYANCARE:

By Aaron Hopkins

As another presidential election is fast approaching, I ask myself if people take the time out to really evaluate the quality of leadership in a popular vote. It appears that accountability takes a back-seat to propaganda and speeches. Well, here is a very interesting fact. In almost every city in America and in the inner-cities in particular, the participation of the people who are registered to vote averages just fewer than 38%. So this points out that the greater amounts of registered voters do not participate in the process. Rather than state the obvious here I will suggest that there must be a valid reason for this issue. Most people will see a person in a leadership role at some point in life and recognize that the person is not qualified to be a real leader. Then there are other times when the most qualified person to lead is not the popular choice. What a dilemma! Imagine being the most qualified person for a job that gives the people under your leadership the best chance to succeed, only to find there is something about you that people don’t like. Imagine further being under a microscope where all of your flaws can be seen and people can say things about you that may have nothing to do with the job. Then consider your options after you are held responsible for problems that were caused by the leader before you who is not present to share the weight of accountability. Thinking about all of this, who would want to a leader? Now we can get past the surface of this principle of leadership. Anyone who is fit to lead will be found doing things that popularity will be in direct conflict with. This is due to the fact that popular things are tied to emotional desires that are mostly superficial. The best leaders are often not popular at all when they are making the kinds of decisions that upset the masses. The question then becomes, why are the masses so influenced by popularity? It is simply because it does not require a person to engage in a struggle or conflict that would make them accountable. A smile, a head-nod, thumbs up or a like on Face Book is how we show our approval. How difficult is that? (Smile) No knock on Face Book, I’m just saying. So if people are going to get the kind of leadership they say they want, we will have to engage in a process that pulls us away from the normal going along to get along and put into action a plan of leadership building. Where does this begin, you ask? Well, I’m starting with that handsome man in the mirror! I won’t talk about anyone else’s leadership until I make sure I’m building my own and making myself accountable. Okay, now your turn! PAGE 7

As parents and students across the country are readying for the new school year, Star Wellness USA founder and CEO Johnette van Eeden is smoothing out the transition back to school by offering meningitis shots as a part of Star Wellness’ clinical services. “Since we provide meningitis shots, it takes some pressure off of parents,” says van Eeden. “These shots are very hard to find and by having them readily available at Star Wellness, parents will have one less thing to worry about as they coordinate everything they need to finalize in order to send their kids back to school.” In adolescence, individuals between the ages of 16 through 21 are at the highest risk for contracting the meningococcal disease. The CDC advises that preteens and teens receive various combinations of doses of the vaccine and booster shot depending on their age at the time of their first shot. In addition to which the vast majority of universities and colleges nationwide require proof of meningococcal vaccinations

before incoming freshmen are allowed to attend. “Meningitis shots are always in high demand, especially at this time of year, but very few pharmacies take insurance and many pediatricians do not keep the vaccine in stock,” adds van Eeden. “Blue Cross Blue Shield has been sending patients to us all summer, specifically for these shots, because they know that we are always prepared. Star Wellness is all about prevention and this is an important preventive service that we are happy to provide to our clients and their families.” To schedule an appointment for a meningitis vaccination, please call 800-685-5572. Cities to request aerial spray for mosquitoes Pursuant to information received from Commissioner David Lakey of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), each home-rule city of Dallas County has the ability to request Aerial Spraying for mosquitoes. Cities within Dallas County that request Aerial Spraying can request that

!

AUGUST 17, 2012

their entire city be sprayed. The City of Richardson made their request to the State and we have been informed that the entire City of Richardson, including the portion which is in Collin County will be included in tonight’s map grid. Also included in tonight’s spray schedule are the entire cities of Garland, University Park and Highland Park, a portion of Dallas and the portion of Mesquite which is north of I-30. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins met with mayors and officials from the county’s Southern cities as well, to put the full spectrum of options at their disposal. The Southern cities were given an equal opportunity to choose between Aerial and Ground Spray for their cities. While state, local and county officials will continue to work hard to protect citizens it is imperative that citizens also take preventative measures to protect themselves and their families from being bitten in the first place.

Author tells story to educate single moms on how to protect children from sexual predators Detroit, MI (BlackNews.com) -Through a Childs Eyes tells a true-life story that references the importance of protecting your child against sexual predators. Author Phillis T. Forrest opens her old wounds and shares a touching story in order to structure a guideline for single mothers in hopes to help them protect their children from sexual predators.

Through A Childs Eyes speaks on the process of a sexual predator that stalked and preyed his way into the authors life at the young age of seven. This nightmare began the day that her mother broke her household rules that she put into place to protect the author and her siblings. The consequences of her actions allowed a complete stranger to abuse and manipulate the author over a

PAGE 18

!

period of 14 years that ultimately led to mothering two of his children. Ms. Forrest comments, "I told my story because I wanted to show the world exactly how this man manipulated his way into my existence and to show mothers how this sort of situation can happen." The story is written in a guideline format with plenty of examples of the experiences that the author encountered each time the protection of her mother lessened. The story of the author is told to gain the credibility of her readers which in turn shows them that the opposite of her mothers actions could have saved her from her nightmare. In chapter 14, entitled "Mothers Lets Have a Conversation", the author breaks away from her story to have a heart-to-heart with mothers. The chapter touches on subjects that are often not discussed in the homes of sexually abused children. With subtitles such as: "Ripley's Believe It Or Not", "Flipping the Script", and "Knowledge Is Power" (to name a few), the author begins to break down the psychological awareness that parents need to become educated on when dealing with a child that has been preyed upon by a child molester.

A paperback copy of Through a Childs Eyes can be purchased at www.throughachildseyes290611.com and Amazon.com, and a e-book copy can be downloaded via the Kindle. "There are so many times that I have read a book and wished I could have had a conversation with the author to answer perplexing questions," says Forrest. Because of this, she has given the public an opportunity to speak with her through her website, scheduled

!

radio talk show segments, and book signings in California, Michigan, Tennessee and Georgia. Forrest has been an amazing mother to two beautiful girls despite the circumstances. Her dream is to share her story with the world; in order to educate mothers, protect children, and help victims let go of their pain.

The smart, unique and incredibly engaging workbook is bringing together sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents and is also smashing assumptions by

Keynote Speaker: Tammy Mutasa "old-school," college educated, R & B obsessed grandmother of three have in common? Far more than either of them would have imagined! Thanks to SEEN.HEARD.LOVED., a powerful new electronic workbook, different generations within families are coming together and talking about topics ranging from overcoming fear, to the sometimes controversial lyrics to rap music. In this day of technological obsessions like Facebook and Twitter, the gap between generations is getting wider and wider. Fortunately, families still get together for BBQs, holidays and to celebrate big life occasions; however, get-togethers that provide an opportunity for families to tune out of the technogadgetry and tune into each other happen far and few between. One of the consequences of our techno-obsessed society is that families can be in the same room with each other without saying a word. The $1.00 e-workbook provides a fun, simple, user-friendly opportunity for families to discuss important topics that may have been previously "off limits," while also motivating and celebrating each other! Some of the activity titles include "I Believe I Can Fly," "This Too Shall Pass," and "We Are Family!" Support Black -owned bookstores

revealing that the generations have far more in common than expected. On the one hand, older family members get to broach topics like sagging pants and the use of the N-word, provided they maintain a strict nonjudgment zone. On the other hand, these same older relatives who may be avoiding "the road less traveled" as it relates to the book they never wrote or the small business they never started get to hear from the youngsters why Nike's powerful mantra (JUST DO IT!) can and should be applied to life! As for the low price, Hollinger said, "I toyed with what an ideal price point would be for such rich information, because it is certainly worth far more than one dollar." She added, "But after discussing it with my team, we decided that the most important thing is to get the information into as many hands as possible, so we settled on a dollar." "I am so excited for families to experience SEEN.HEARD.LOVED.,'" Hollinger added, "The culminating activity is so powerful that grown men have been moved to tears." The SEEN.HEARD.LOVED.workbook costs only $1.00 and is available at www.seenheardloved.com.
