Why Some Black Entrepreneurs Hide Their “Blackness” Is it necessary?
hide the fact that they are the owner. It’s not just the customers they are concerned about losing; but investors as well. Regardless the business you will always need two things in business clients and capital. I Are the concerns real?
An owner of a patio-installation business was successful in building his company over 9 years to a $6 million enterprise. The interesting part of this story is that the owner did it by hiding the fact that he was a black business owner. Unfortunately his story is just one of many by black entrepreneurs who have to hide the fact that they are black in order to succeed. There are many factors that come into play for a black entrepreneur to believe doing this would be beneficial to growing and making their business successful. Living in a society where it is perceived that “White is right” leads black business owners to conceal the fact that they are in fact owners.
Their concerns are not fabricated. They are very real A 2014 Nielsen report on AfricanAmerican buying habits showed that only 20 percent of whites and other non-African Americans indicated they would buy or support a product sold by a person of color or minority-owned business. Compare this to the 55 percent of blacks with household incomes of at least $50,000 who responded that they would support a black business. Others, like assistant professor of marketing at Chicago State University, Joni Jackson, thinks the hiding of black ownership only encourages a perception of inferiority among black-owned businesses. She also has
Fear of losing customers Many black entrepreneurs go so far as to omitting their picture out of their web sites and marketing materials, have other white employees do their interviewing, and try to

But many black business owners are adamant that they sometimes have no choice but to hide their blackness if they want to grow. As James Parker, owner of BestDateNight.com stated, “I need people to look at the app, and not the app developer yet.”So in hiding the person behind the business allows some black owner to keep their business alive and thriving.

WE ARE SURVIVORS By Wanda McKinley, survivor of childhood molestation, rape and domestic violence
Stories of men and women who survived-
I Am A Survivor-Part 2 Eddie also always told me If I hurt him he was going to take my truck and drive off of a cliff. He made me believe it was my fault for him beating me up. As time went on I was getting really scared for my life and by this time I was really so far in that I was afraid to kick him out. I talked to my sister and she told me if I was to kick him out to call the cops for back up, and I told her that he would never hurt me, that was not the truth because he had been hurting me all along. I couldn’t go to my family about what was happening because he told me he would go after them if I ever told them what was happening. So to save them I had to keep quiet. Eddie cut me off from my family and my friends and I didn’t know why at first, then I figured it out, Eddie was afraid I was going to talk about what was really happening to me, this was a threat to him. He was afraid I was going to find out about his past and get rid of him. Well I did find out about his past after he nearly killed me. I was outside talking to my neighbor and I had been out there for about thirty minutes and Eddie came out and told me I had a phone call and I told him I didn’t hear the phone ring and he made up some story as to why I didn’t hear the phone, so I went in to answer the phone and I get in the house and there was no one on the phone, he told me they hung up. Eddie used this type of stuff to get me away from anyone I might confide in. One day Eddie called me at work several times and I didn’t want to talk to him. My managers told him I was busy and I couldn’t talk, well he got mad and walked down to my place of work and when I saw him coming I told my boss I didn’t want to talk to him and my boss sent me to the office. Eddie stormed in and demanding my boss to come get me. When my boss told him no, Eddie stormed back to the office, and my boss followed him and told him to leave but he wouldn’t. Eddie got in my boss’s face and threatened him. He wanted the keys to the truck and I wouldn’t give them to him and he got madder and madder so I gave him the keys so he would leave and leave me alone. On Halloween, I was dressing my son up to take him out trick or treating and Eddie kept asking me how long are you going to be gone and I told him I didn’t know. He told me not to

get in a car with my mom, he kept telling me she would have me put away so I couldn’t be with him and I told him no she wouldn’t, but he said it so many times he had himself believing it. My mom and I took my son out and we were gone about an hour and a half. So when we got home here comes Eddie out from nowhere he was really angry and demanding to know where I was, he saw me getting out of my mom’s car. I told him we had taken my son around to some homes. My son had just gone into the bowling alley before this entire episode started taking place. Eddie had hit the hood on my truck he had been calling my parent’s house the whole time we were gone. My mom had asked me if I was going to be all right and I said yes I will be all right and I will call you in a little bit. Eddie hated it when I would talk to my parents he was really nervous about me telling what was really going on in my house. Eddie would never talk about his past then I was really scared of what kind of person he really was. Eddie would go through my mail; I had no idea what he was looking for. He was a real possessive and jealous person and very controlling… If you have a survival story to tell, let me share it. Debra’s Bit’s & Pieces Credits “Giving & Sharing” Voting Is it a Christian Duty?
A sincere follower of the Bible hates evil and wants the Kingdom of God to be established on this earth. This world is full of sin and there is often the desire to go out right now and fight unrighteousness. In America today, there is a strong movement, called the Religious Right or Moral Majority, that believes it is the Christians duty to become actively involved in the political process. Many Sabbath-

Sad to share that the Associated Press is reporting that Opiod’s/”pain pills” were the cause of Prince’s death, based on released toxicology reports. Prince Rogers
Nelson’s plane made an emergency landing 6 days before his death where the entertainer received a “save shot” for an overdose. My Prayer is that the dugs and money are traced. Fans and human beings want to know what happened! As far news, it looks like Prince will be in the headlines for a while. Multiple relatives are staking a claim to his $300M estate and enough recorded music for multiple CD albums was found at his Paisley Park residence. R.I.P. He deserved better... Hope you’ve recovered from PRince Roger Nelson the loooong Memorial Day Weekend. I am forecasting yard work around my house. The “hubby” radar sees some sunshine on the way and pretty soon this wet weather of the last couple of weeks will be a nice memory,lol.... As Summer comes and vacations are planned a survey from the travel industry Trip Advisor site says that the average American family will spend about $2800 for your Summer getaway. That sounds like TWO nice vacay’s to me, but maybe that’s just me....Looking

Dallas ISD graduating senior class receives more than $104 million in scholarships DALLAS — Dallas ISD’s graduating class has reported receiving more than $104 million in college scholarships. Nearly 3,000 college scholarships have been awarded to 1,066 seniors. More than 7,500 seniors are expected to graduate this year. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said the scholarship dollars represent dividends from a worthwhile investment. “These scholarships are just the first dividends from the countless hours invested in pursuit of academic excellence, an investment that will continue to pay off far into the future,” Hinojosa said. “The total reflects the quality of our graduates and the strong support they have received from teachers, counselors and parents. Both our staff and students deserve congratulations for this impressive accomplishment.” Nearly 3,000 college scholarships have been awarded to 1,066 seniors in Dallas ISD. Courtesy of DISD
The scholarship data is self-reported by seniors to their high school counselor or college access advisor. As a result, it’s likely that the amount of offered scholarships exceeds the $104.1 million that has been reported so far.
David W. Carter High School: Home to the fastest girls in Texas David W. Carter sophomore Sha’Carri Richardson recently won the 2016
Class 4A girls’ state title in the 100-meter race finishing in 11.58 seconds. Richardson’s 100-meter time was the fastest in all classifications this year. Having also placed second in the state 200-meter race at the UIL state championship meet, Richardson said winning “felt amazing.” “At first, I was solely focused on beating my own time from my previous meets, so when I found out I beat all the times from all the classes, I was Page 10

Richardson’s inspiration to running came when she was visited her grandmother and noticed several medals on display in a trophy case. The future star learned those medals belonged to her aunt, Shayaria, a former track standout at James Madison High School. It was in that moment, Richardson was inspired to blaze her own trail as a track athlete. Richardson took off in third grade, participating in amateur track clubs with other kids around the city. As she continued to progress, coaches and trainers took notice of her times, that not only was she fast but also consistent. The summer after eighth-grade, Richardson was injured while competing. Despite the hurdle, she committed to working even harder to coming back stronger in order to compete with her high school teammates. “In 8th grade, I realized I had the talent to compete,” said Richardson. “People started taking notice of my times. So, as I approached high school, I wasn’t going to let my injury set me back. It just prompted me to work harder to get back to where I needed to be for the upcoming ninth grade season.” Though attending Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy, Richardson committed to working out and training as a student-athlete at David W. Carter High School, possible due to the fact that
Gilliam is a magnet, which means students interested in participating in sports can do so at their home campus. Carter’s Track and Field coach Lauren Cross welcomed Richardson and her teammates back to school in 2014 with an invitation to run cross country as a pre-requisite to join the school’s track team. Cross who competed at Houston’s Aldine HS as a member of their state meet in mile relay and then later at Grambling State University as a top competitor in the Southwest Athletic Conference, said her athletes’ willingness was a key indicator of their eventual success. In addition to Richardson’s recent state finish, Cross’ relay team claimed the state 4×100 title clocking a Class 4A state record of 46.23 seconds. “I am extremely proud of these girls,” said Cross who is even more excited that all but one of the members of her relay team will return next year. Cross will return Richardson, juniors Deziree Porter and Zhalyn Richardson but will look to others girls in her program to fill the void left by senior Kynna Gamble who will go on to compete at Houston Baptist University next year. “Setting a new record, especially for new people
coming in, sets the bar extremely high,” said Cross considering her track program. “It’s hard getting to the top, but even harder staying on top. Beating their own record, is our goal for next year.” Though Richardson is enjoying the fruits of her labor for now, she plans to waste no time getting back to the grind of training. Her plans this summer? USA and AAU Track and Field training and competition. Her goal? “One of the main things I want to do is beat my own record next year,” said Richardson. “But like any track athlete, the ultimate goal is the Olympics.” At the recent University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Championship Meet held at Texas A&M University at Commerce, district student-athletes competed in a total of 10 events, winning a total of 22 medals including 10 gold medals, three silver medals, and nine bronze medals. Carter’s Demarviae Gray won the boys’ 4A 200 meter state title and Wilmer Hutchins won the boys’ 4×100 competition. Additionally, both Carter’s girls and boys track & field teams were named Region II – 4A Champions.
