The INTERVIEW: Debra Abron
There is a unique educational program going down at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in Dallas By Ariell Johnson every Saturday from 12-2 pm, for children of all ages called, “Knowledge Saturday.” Warren Thornton, is the Founder of this program and says he modeled the program after the program which was created by The Black Panther Party, by teaching them about Black Inventors, giving children an opportunity to discuss current issues, and providing them with a healthy meal. At Knowledge Saturdays, before any lessons are given, all of the children stand and chant in unison, “I Love Myself and Black is Beautiful”. The Elite News had an opportunity to sneak in on two separate occasions to be able to provide readers with the details about what their child will be experiencing with the parents’ permission to attend. The writing board is filled with a list of black inventors such as Lewis Latimore, Garrett Morgan, Benjamin Banneker and Madame C.J. Walker just to name a few, then Mr. Thornton goes around the room asking the children to tell the participants in the room what invention each inventor created.

kids. The young girl stood there for a few moments before she started to draw and in a matter of minutes she presented two inventions to us. One of the inventions was a candy bar named SnickMarshmellows and it even had a wrapper designed to attract customers, which had the picture of a bunny rabbit on it, and was shaped like a bunny. When it came down to the pricing, our young inventor had some very interesting numbers which would probably chase off would be buyers, but her reasoning behind it, was she was going to make a lot of money from it, and be rich. As a spectator, you could tell the young lady enjoyed the activity. It provided her with an opportunity to create something right in front of our eyes, and later make a presentation to the class about her invention. You could hear the conviction in her voice as she provided an explanation to us about why she was marketing the invention at the price she mentioned. It was not easy to convince her to consider reducing the price to sell more of her item, which was something we all smiled about and admired her for, because we realized even though she received a little criticism, instead of backing down and lowering her price, she explained why her product was priced higher than comparable items on the market.
invention, after a brief review of the inventors names which were written on the board. The girls invented an underground food delivery tunnel and the boys created a Hydro/Solar powered mobile phone which had speakers built into it. Both ideas were very innovative, but the boys won. Everyone loved the idea of being able to charge their phones by dropping them in water. The Highland Hills group had a median age of approximately 12. Therefore a second activity was having the children fill out a budget for their future college expenses. It was interesting to see what sort of numbers they came up with for savings and rent, which was somewhat of an indication of this particular group being the perfect age, to start learning about the importance of budgeting. After the numbers were called out across the room, Warren, who happens to be a business analyst, discussed the reason why some of the numbers given were unrealistic. Immediately after taking a few suggestions from Warren, modifications were made to the numbers, to make them more realistic.

Let Us Welcome Councilman Omar Narvaez to District 6 Elite News recently had an opportunity to congratulate Omar Narvaez on his win as the new City Councilman of District 6. Of course the most obvious question we had for Councilman Narvaez was what strategy he used to win the election. He says there wasn’t any single strategy he used to win, but, he shared with us, what he believes were the contributing factors that got him the most votes. Darryl E. Blair Sr.
Councilman Narvaez mentioned to us one of the first things he did when he started campaigning, was made time to knock on as many doors (over 3,000) as he could knock on. Rather than settling for conversations through partially opened doors, Councilman Narvaez asked if it was okay for him to enter the home. Once inside, he started taking notes about the concerns of the community he hoped to serve. What he learned was that the most common concerns among his constituents were affordable housing, increasing rents and taxes. Mr. Narvaez informed us of State Representative Eric Johnson’s recent attempt to pass House Bill 2480, which addresses the affects of gentrification, one of which is increased rates for housing. The bill wasn’t passed, but because Councilman Narvaez is definitely on board with many of the points made by Representative Johnson in the bill, he intends to use some of them to prevent many of the residents in his community from being displaced.
with her family, and came out later with a poster she made for him. Another young girl jumped out of her family’s car and started running behind Councilman Narvaez near one of the polling locations screaming, “There he is! It’s HIM!” Mr. Narvaez says a lot of middle aged people were on the fence about voting for him, but it was the Youth, between the ages of roughly 18-26 who helped many of their parents and grandparents understand they needed to rally behind Councilman Narvaez because he was going to brighten everyone’s future by making changes for the better. Councilman Narvaez has a ton of community residents behind him right now, ready to roll up their sleeves and get involved. If you need evidence, just go to his snapchat @voteomar and start following him on Twitter @voteomarnarvaez We here are Elite News are wishing Councilman Narvaez the best of luck with serving and engaging his community. He has told us he is always available to his community, so just email him your concerns at omarnarvaezdallas@gmail.com or go visit him at City Hall. If neither one of these options work for you, Councilman Narvaez says you can pick the location and he will do everything within his power to meet you where it is most convenient.
In knocking on different doors within District 6, Councilman Narvaez realized for the first time, how many young people knew him. He describes their reaction upon seeing him, to something close to the sighting of a music icon. They would start to walk and run behind him as if they were joining the campaign and asking him to sign autographs. One little girl by the name of Maya who is only 7 years old, went in her room while Councilman Narvaez was visiting

Growing Your Money Through Trading of Currencies By Arielle Johnson Many have read the book, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, but not everyone is lucky enough to have at least one parent who is rich. Most of us grow up with both parents stressing the importance of taking the necessary steps to have stability in our lives. Go to college, get an education, get a career, buy a house, make a family, and stay at your job until it is time to retire, if it is a good job with benefits. Occasionally, we have an opportunity to grow up with parents whose views regarding money and finances are complete opposites of one another. A parent with views opposite the ones mentioned earlier, might be someone who is constantly taking risks in life. Their life path would be to make more than enough money to pay off their major debts, and have enough income remaining to schedule more leisure time with their family and make more investments. We recently interviewed a gentleman by the name of Francisco Vasquez, who started out taking the stable lifestyle route in life, like his mother. He was enrolled in college and eventually picked up what most would consider a dream job for a 22 year old, making $44,000/year working as an underwriter for a finance company. The job was pretty much 9-5 p.m. and let’s just say, Francisco got comfortable. He was no longer living with Mom, and didn’t have any major responsibilities since he was living with a cousin. In this living situation, even after everything was paid, he still had a lot of disposable income. After a year of working as an underwriter, Francisco received somewhat of a wake up call when his job decided to move their offices to Houston. This is
when he began to see how much control his job had over him, and decided he was not interested in making the move with them. Francisco says, although Houston is not that far away, the idea of moving there, made him feel as though he would be starting his life over again. A quote from his father came to mind when he found himself in this uncomfortable position. “Yo soy el tamano de la problema que se me presen-
From left to right - Mario Parra, Francisco Vasquez and Carlo Parra. (They are all first cousins.)
ta,” which means, there is never a problem too big for him to conquer, and if it appears bigger than him, do whatever it is you have to do to prepare yourself to solve it. For a period of roughly 4 months, Francisco saved as much of his money as he could, while he pondered his next move. Eventually he had $15,000 in his savings account. He then took a portion of this money and invested it in importing cell phone accessories, such
Page 11
as cell phone cases and glass covers. While he was waiting for the items to arrive, he spent hours upon hours on his home computer, researching all of the possible websites he would be able to use to sell his merchandise. Although Francisco found this business to be somewhat financially rewarding, it was also very time consuming and he knew he needed to find something else. The idea of Forex Trading, which involves the trading of currencies, came about from Francisco’s roommate/cousin. His cousin didn’t provide him with too many details about it, but eventually he heard one of his friends was also involved with Forex Trading. Both of them were making money from it, but what really caught Francisco’s attention, was when his friend made a profit of $6,000 from a $500 investment, within a weeks time. This was when he decided to take a closer look at Forex Trading as a way of increasing his income. Francisco’s advice to anyone considering Forex Trading is, number one, realize risk management needs to be taken into consideration. The reality of this business is, just as soon as you make $6,000, you can turn around and lose all of it if you are trading too aggressively. Technically, each trade should only be .04 percent of your account balance. Also, there are online tools and apps which allow you to follow predictions in the market to determine whether or not your income is likely to increase or decrease due to trading. Some of the tools you may use are Fibonacci,

Make sure you conduct your own research to find which tools work best for you before conducting a trade.) After analyzing the trends, you will need to find a brokerage firm to assist you with the trade. There will be fees involved, so again, you have to find a firm that works best for you. Presently, at the age of 26, Francisco is working part-time in Corporate America, and conducting Forex trades when he gains knowledge of trends he wishes to invest in. His long term goal is to become a real estate and start-up company investor. Although he is not married, he hopes to make enough
money as an investor, to be able to spend a ton of leisure time with his future wife and children, while he is still somewhat of a youth. Francisco’s mother is a paralegal, and his father, although he is no longer affiliated with Organo Gold, made his first million with the company in 2012. Please make sure you read next week’s paper, as we will be providing a follow up article to this one by a different Forex Trader. Our follow up article will offer details about obtaining training from a support group, so you do not feel as though you are learning the ends and outs of trading on your own.
