WE ARE SURVIVORS By Wanda McKinley, survivor of childhood molestation, rape and domestic violence Stories of men and women who survived- I Am A Survivor-Part 3

In 1996 my dad bought a bus ticket for Eddie and bused him down to Texas to get him out of my life, because my mom and dad knew he was really going to hurt me and I was blind to it. Eddie called and said he bought a bus ticket to Colorado and asked me if I would pick him up and bring him back and I did, little did I know what was going to happen. I thought some time away he would change but it didn’t the beatings started again. On February 10, 1997 I got up and went to work, normal every day routine. When I got to work everything seem to be cool. To my knowledge there were no phone calls and I went on about my work. When I got home everything seem ok there to. At 7:00 p.m. I got a call from my dad and he asked me to come over to his house because we had to talk and I told him I would be right there, I hung up the phone and Eddie asked me who that was and I said it was my dad and he asked me what he wanted and I said he wants to talk to me, and Eddie begged me not to go. Eddie told me I better be home in a half hour and I said ok. I got over to dad’s house and dad told me Lori who was my general mngr. said Eddie called my place of work that day ten times. And Lori was going to have to let me go if I didn’t take care of this situation. Well I wasn’t going to choose Eddie over my job so I told my dad I was going home to kick him out. Well I had been there for a half hour and the phone starting ringing off the hook, and I just about jumped out of my skin and my dad could tell I was nervous so when we got done talking I had gone over to the bowling alley to visit my friends because I knew what was going to happen when I got home. I told my sister I was going to kick him out and she said I better call the cops and I told her I would be all right. It was 8:20 p.m. and I went back over to the house to tell my dad that I was going home. Dad asked me if I wanted him to come over with me and I said no that I had to do this and he said ok. It is now

8:30 and I got home and when I crossed this street with a four way stop I look up the street to see if any cars were coming and I saw Eddie he started walking down to my parents’ house. He asked me what we talked about and I told him and he said my boss was lying. Eddie then said to me what are you going to do about it, I told him I wanted him to move out. Eddie then grabbed me are like always and dragged me to the bedroom and threw me down on the bed. He went to the kitchen and I heard the drawer open but I didn’t know what he was doing and by this time I was really scared so I picked up the phone by my bed to call my dad and I just as I started to dial the number and Eddie came back into the bedroom and looked me in the eye and said (I quote) I told you to never hurt me and when I turned around he was standing there with a knife. When I tried to get away he swung the knife down-wards cutting me on my left chest and I turned my back to him and I felt the knife going in, after Eddie stabbed me he went out the back door and threw the knife over the fence and at this time I had a chance to call my dad and I was so hysterical I didn’t get to tell him Eddie stabbed me, dad hung up and he and my sister were there in about five minutes. Eddie came back in and said let’s call 911 and I told him to get the hell away from me and to never touch me again. He went out the front door and I followed him out so I could see which direction he was going to run. I stepped out on the porch in a bloody white sweat shirt and my dad fought Eddie to the ground and the cops arrived at that time. Eddie used a 10 inch boning knife on me. The cops called for an ambulance and then I was transported to the hospital, I arrived there at 9:00 p.m. and they had to stitch up the wound on my back, and then they had to put a chest tube in, I was in ER for an hour and a half they had to take pictures of my wounds and doctor all of the wounds. The hospital staff told me they had to air lift to a hospital in Colorado. At 11:30 p.m. Air Life flew me to Colorado and I arrived at that hospital at 2:00 a. m. I was in there for a week. I was released on four days later…….

CELEBRATING 56 YEARS OF SERVING THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

Rollin With A Brotha Welcome to the weekend baby! This Friday starts our 26th Anniversary Celebration. Last year at this time Kevan Browning we were preparing for a Canadian getaway to Niagra Falls and Toronto where the Pan Am Games were being held. This year while no less relevant our celebration will be low key, but just as heart felt. I found a good thing 27 years ago when I hosted a take the neighborhood back from drugs rally at Kirk Whalum’s Dad’s church in Memphis Tn. I volunteered for the event after two people turned it down. My future wife was supposed to create her then dentist boyfriends resume that evening, but had grown tired of this busta showin’ up late for dates and taking her for granted. Kevan and Sheila Browning 1990 She’d decided the next time he was late she wouldn’t be there waiting... So this educated, beautiful “good thang” came to the rally which also featured a showing of PBS TV/Radio legend Tony Brown’s film about the ravages of Cocaine in our community, “White Girl”... Sheila an RN and I met during this event. Maybe she felt sorry for me as I was sick and sweating a “coke head”... In any case after trying to reach her for several weeks, I finally connected for a date. Fast forward 3 months later I proposed and (on the second try) she accepted after figuring out I was serious. Since arriving at 100.3 Jamz as M.C. Jammer in March of 1990, I’ve experienced incredible professional and personal success. It all started with a man proposing without a wedding ring and with a $500 wedding paid from my cut of a dance in Deep Ellum promoted by myself and good friends Mike Kelly and Al Walsh. That $500 paid for a wedding ring($85), catering/reception(350) and preacher stipend($(50),lol... Our weeding was held outside on Las Colinas Canal at no charge... It remains my best investment ever. Happy Anniversary Mrs. Browning, with yo’ bad self!!! The kids are out of school”... “The kids are out of school”... “Grocery and electric bills go up”, The kids are out of “school”! Happy Summer Vacation to all the awesome teachers, counselors, vice principals, principals, para professionals, security, office and cafeteria folks who are responsible for our “futures” 5 days a week, 8 hours a day in DFW and everywhere else. That includes my 1st grade teaching daughter and my wife! So proud of you Danielle. As you roll around, keep an

eye out for our children on foot, bikes, skate boards, mopeds and behind the automobile wheel. The true impact of Summer Vacation hit me a couple of nights ago as I drove home, anticipating a Chick-Fil-A sandwich for dinner. My fave Chick-Fil-A normally has 4-5 cars in the drive thru line. Wednesday night there must have been 20, most smiling the smile of the free and unencumbered for the Summer, lol. That’s right you won’t have to visit the mall or movies to get the picture...6-18 year-old munchkins are everywhere. That said Summer “V” is for adults too and not just to act as chauffeurs, body guards and refrigerator police. Here’s a link to a ton of cool things around our area over the next month in our area, many of the affordable for a family... http://dallas.eventful.com/events/ categories/family_fun_kids In Smokin Tidbits:! Rest in Peace Muhammad Ali... If you are under 45, you probably only know Ali as the guy with Parkinson’s or the man who carried the Olympic Torch and was a great fighter. If you are over 45, you may have seen him fight! Muhammad Ali and Dr. King You may have applauded his stance on the Vietnam War, when at the height of the Civil Rights movement he told the government no, he won’t go. A few sentences can never capture his greatness, so may I suggest watching some Ali on Youtube, renting the closest thing to a home movie “I am Ali” on Netflix or checking out Will Smith and Jamie Foxx in the awesome Bio Pic “Ali”. I tried to find a local theater carrying the Oscar nominated film in DFW, but couldn’t at press time. Sony is putting it out in limited re-release to theaters this weekend...Smith and this generations best Heavy Weight Champ Lennox Lewis will be among the pall bearers at his “public” home going. Many years ago “The Champ” and his inner circle started what they called “The Book”. It was Ali planning his burial and connected things. Today Friday 6/10/16 Ali’s memorial service will be held at Louisville Kentucky’s 15,000 seat KFC Yum Brands Arena. It was important to Ali that Christianity, Judaism and other religions be represented, although the the service will be based in his Muslim Faith. The “Book” also indicates Ali wanted the majority of tickets to go to regular folks and not celebrities and they are. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton will deliver the Eulogy. R.I.P. Muhammad Ali. You were the greatest!!! Happy Birthday to YOU and celebs this week: Tom Jones 76,Liam Neeson 61, Tamala Mann 49, Mark Wahlberg 45, Faith Evans 42, Allen Iverson 41, Kanye West 39, Fetty Wap 25 and youngest 1st Daughter Sasha Obama is 14. life have helped to shape the very mosaic of the 21st century. His inner light illuminated the hearts, the minds, and the souls of men, women and children the world over. He lived a transformational life with vision at its core. Muhammad Ali once said that a person who views the world at 50-years of age the same as they did at 20-years of age has wasted 30 years of life. He was a wise and purposeful man, a son of the South, who rose to the pinnacle of a sport that brought him fame and wealth. Despite his success it appeared that he was in pursuit of something else, something far more valuable than money, fame, regular mention in the headlines of newspapers or a gallery of friends. He often said that those who are not “courageous enough to take risks will accomCongresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson plish nothing in life.” The risks that he took inside and out of the boxing ring were numerous, With the passing of the larger than life sports from refusing to enter the draft for the Vietnam personality, Muhammad Ali, the world has lost War which caused him to be stripped of his title more than a great boxing champion. Bryan Adams High School Selected to Receive $130,000 Grant from Department of Education DALLAS — Bryan Adams High School Leadership Academy has been selected to become part of the next cohort of the federal Investing in Innovation (i3) Validation Grant for scaling the Building Assets Reducing Risks (BARR) program. The mission of BARR is to improve educator effectiveness and the performance of all students in secondary schools by creating positive relationships among students and staff and using real-time, student-level performance data to guide instruction.

Bryan Adams is one of ten schools that have been identified by the Public School Choice Initiative, which provides Dallas ISD families with options that tap into students’ interests, aspirations and learning styles. The district goal is to have 35 Choice Schools by 2020.

For the next two years, Bryan Adams will receive $130,000 to strengthen its schoolwide approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) through implementation of the BARR program. Yearlong training and resources will enable teachers to better apply strategic interventions to support student learning throughout the school day. “We have been implementing SEL for the past few years,” explained Bryan Adams principal Richard Kastl. “It is such an honor to have the opportunity to further scale our work and to receive additional assets and coaching through this grant to make our approach to student interventions even stronger.” Freshmen at Bryan Adams will be divided into multiple cohorts that take the same academic classes and receive weekly lessons on social and emotional skills from core content teachers on topics such as stress response strategies, self-awareness, and time management. One cohort of 9th graders will begin the BARR program at Bryan Adams during the 2016-2017 school year.

The Meaning Of Death By Henry Nelson 1st Corinthians 15:50-57 50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed. 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Speak to us once more your solemn message of life and death. Help us to live as those who are prepared to die. And when our days are accomplished, enable us to die as those who go forth to live, so that living or dying, our life may be in you, and that nothing in life or in death be able to separate us from your great love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Psalm 23 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me. In the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen!

The other day my friend lost his mother. Next we lost Muhammad Ali and then I heard about another friend that lost his father so I could not just set here and do nothing. I had to write something to bring people back to home. So this is how this message came about.

The Bible says many wonderful things about the death of a Christian. But the trouble is that we do not believe these things. We think of death as an end to all things good. We think of death as a time of separation. We think of it as a hideous monster come to cut off all our joys.

Dying, Christ destroyed our death. Rising, Christ restored our life. Christ will come again in glory. Here and now, dear friends, we are God’s children. What we shall be has not been revealed, But we know when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Those who have this hope purify themselves as Christ is pure.

But the death of a Christian is a wonderful thing. Suppose you were in a prison camp where you were persecuted and beaten every day, where you had nothing to eat but a dry crust of stale bread every day and you had to sleep on the cold, damp ground every night. Then suppose some army friends came in and rescued you and took you to a place of rest and good food and happiness. Wouldn’t you consider these rescuers as good friends?

Jesus said, “I am the Resurrection and I am the Life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, yet shall they live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. I died, and behold I am alive forever more, and I hold the keys of hell and death. Because I live, you shall also live.” Amen! Let Us Pray O God, who gave us birth, you are ever more ready to hear than we are to pray. You know our needs before we ask, and our ignorance in asking. Give to us now your grace; that as we shrink before the mystery of death, we may see the light of eternity.

Well, we ought to look upon death in that way. We live in a cruel world, a world of many hardships, injustices, trials, tears, sorrow, and separations. Now when death comes to take us into the presence of the Lord, and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” Isaiah 65:19 19 says, I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more. Amen! If you would like to have the entire message please request it at: hnelson75044@yahoo. com
