August places us well into the Summer season, and our aircrafts are busy operating up to 12.5 hours a day to provide air travel to and from our 23 destinations in Europe and the Middle East, fulfilling 157 scheduled flights weekly.

I had promised myself that this year I would start my beach body prep in May, I seem to have missed that deadline but luckily for me, Malta has a lot of coastline which means finding a secluded spot to sunbathe, isn’t too difficult. There’s a great Maltese saying “Il-baqra kollha tinbiegħ ” which translated means, “every part of the cow gets sold,” a kind of “there’s something for everyone”, and that is exactly what Malta embodies.

When you go through this edition, you’ll find beautiful things; villages, gifts, views… you will read about the traditional festa and festa food, flea market finds, the Malta Society of Arts and everything it does for the creative community, you’ll see ideas of where to go on land and at sea and how to get there; maybe you’ll take the bus which are great fun and great value or perhaps you will get to charter a boat for a day?

SANTA MARIJA FESTA

If you happen to visit Malta in the middle of August, consider yourself lucky to witness the Santa Marija Festa. The main event takes place on the 15th of August, but the streets are adorned with decorations for much of the month, creating a festive ambiance throughout Mosta.

The highlight of the Santa Marija Festa is the grand procession that winds its way through the streets of Mosta on the main day of the feast. The statue of the Assumption of Mary is carried in a splendid procession, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of marching bands. The procession features religious fraternities, parishioners in traditional attire, and a lively atmosphere filled with music and applause.

And then of course there are the fireworks… - these play a significant role in every festa with each town competing to be the best. Mosta is certainly in the top ranks, and is renowned for its spectacular displays, illuminating the night sky with mesmerising and carefully choreographed pyrotechnic shows.

In addition to the religious processions, you can enjoy cultural performances and entertainment during the feast. Traditional Maltese music and dancing take centre stage, providing visitors with a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the island. You can witness local folklore dances, live music performances, and even theatrical productions celebrating the occasion. However, it is good to note that at Ta’ Marija restaurant, which flanks the side of the Dome, these traditional music and dance shows are a regular occurrence all year around.

So much has been written about it but you really have to go and see it. Marvel at the miracle of the unex ploded bomb, the beautiful painted ceiling and its, sheer engineering feat. Worth the trip to the centre of the islands. An absolute must-see.

AMPHITHEATRE

In the heart of the Ġnien l-Għarusa Gardens you’ll find an amphitheatre where various performances take place throughout the year from Shakespeare, to comedy, and to music. It’s also a great place to just take in the view.

FORT MOSTA

Among the Victoria Lines is Fort Mosta, a polygonal fort which was built between 1878 and the 1880s by the British. Today, it is used by The Armed Forces of Malta as an ammunition depot.

VICTORIA LINES

The Victoria Lines stretch 12 km from the east to the west of the island, passing from Madliena and through the limits of Mosta on their way before ending in Rabat. These linear fortifications are an example of mili tary architecture that are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

GREEN OPEN CAMPUS

In the summer months, various musical and theatrical performances take place at the Green Open Campus at MCAST, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology. Easy parking, a lovely walk, a fitness trail and greenery await all year around.

THE MALTA SOCIETY OF ARTS CELEBRATES 100 YEARS AT PALAZZO DE LA SALLE

THIS YEAR, MALTA’S OLDEST ARTS INSTITUTION, THE MALTA SOCIETY OF ARTS (MSA), IS CELEBRATING THE 100th ANNIVERSARY SINCE THE MOVE TO ITS PRESTIGIOUS SEAT AT THE 400-YEAR-OLD PALAZZO DE LA SALLE, IN VALLETTA. A SERIES OF EVENTS IS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY TO COMMEMORATE THIS INCREDIBLE MILESTONE.

The Malta Soc iety of Arts was formed in 1852, in response to the birth of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the initiatives organised by the latter. The MSA’s founder, Sir William Reid, was the British Governor for Malta at the time and saw the potential for having a Society focu sed on the empowerment of the arts in Malta.

Early on, the MSA was a nomadic institution which survived 42 years without fixed premises. In 1894 it was entrusted with the stewardship of Palazzo Xara, which was situated across the road from St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta. The first exhibition hosted at these ‘new’ MSA premises was the Industrial Exhibition, which attracted a record number of visitors for the time. For various reasons, the Society moved several times again after its stay at Palazzo Xara, and only settled in Palazzo de La Salle, its current home, in 1923 - exactly 100 years ago.

The richly decorated and opulent Palazzo de La Salle was built around 1600, after the Great Siege of Malta, and it is one of Valletta’s earliest buildings. In the 300 or so years before it became the seat of the MSA, the palace was home to a colourful group of individuals, which includes Knights from the Order of St John, British merchants, and Maltese families. It derives its name from the De La Salle brothers, two French noblemen appointed as bailiffs by the Order of St John, who were conferred the building around 1730.

From 1923 onwards, as soon as it settled into the Palazzo, the MSA began to expand its activities and scope. It had already established itself as a leader in the fields of art and technical education, and now that it had its own premises, it consolidated its activities in these areas. At the sam e time, it began to support Maltese Modern artists in their studies abroad, and in fact the

So ciety has been historically associated with some of the biggest names in Maltese Modern art, including Anton Inglott, Esprit Barthet and Antonio Sciortino.

The Society’s activities slowed down during World War II but picked up again soon afterwards. The MSA became a powerhouse for change and for bringing new ideas, new voices and a new kind of art into the Maltese artistic scene. Pioneering British abstract artist Victor Pasmore, for instance, organised his first solo exhibition in Malta at Palazzo de La Salle in 1970.

Throughout the year 2023, the Society has organised a series of events and activities to celebrate this rich and textured history. These consist of an exhibition by the Society’s members, and a series of musical performances which take the MSA archives as their starting point. The MSA has also curated a historical exhibition which tracks the MSA’s influence in the arts over the past 100 years, featuring masterworks of Modern and Contemporary art. Supplementing all this is a soon-to-be published book of essays that portrays the Palazzo from every angle – historical, artistic, and even philosophical. These initiatives offer a cross-section of the MSA over the years, as well as a glimpse into the rich history of the Palazzo itself, revealing hitherto unknown information about the past; while at the same time keeping an eye on the future and steering the Society into a contemporary direction.

“The Malta Society of Arts has been at the forefront of promoting culture, arts and crafts in Malta for over 100 years,” states Arch. Adrian Mamo, MSA’s President. “As we celebrate the MSA’s centenary in this prestigious building, we augur that the Society will continue fulfilling its important mission in the coming years.”

YOUNG MIGRANT FAMILIES LOOKING FOR GREAT DEALS ON CLOTHES, ELDERLY COLLECTORS SHREWDLY CASTING A BEADY EYE OVER STALLS THEY’VE COMBED A THOUSAND TIMES, AND US, THE YOUNG CREATIVES, LOVERS OF INTERIORS, LOOKING TO FURTHER ECLECTICISE OUR HOMES.

"I've been going to the Birgu flea market since my student days – a good number of years before I had my own home to house all my (many) finds! Back then, I'd mostly look for trinkets to decorate my room, or old frames and materials I could upcycle for my embroidery projects over at @the_secret_rose. Then, when Richard and I bought our first home together, I'd be on the lookout for anything that would make sense for our eclectic, modern rustic home decor. There have been many finds I've loved over the years,

and I'm going to cheat a little when it comes to my favourite –rather than one piece, I'm going to choose my collection of vintage utilitarian ceramics. From antique jam jars to ceramic gin bottles and planters, I love them all – the more worn out, the better!"

"Most of my suitcases are from the Birgu Market, in fact, I go by the nickname ‘Tal-Bagalji ’ by many vendors there. I’ve collected over 200 suitcases which are now a feature wall in my old bedroom-cum-vintage-stuff room. I love old suitcases, there’s always something different from one to another. One of them was owned by Esprit Barthet (a fa mous local artist) and another belonged to my grandfather whom I never met - they’re definitely my two favourites."

DISCOVERING THE VILLAGE OF NADUR

YOU CANNOT SAY YOU’VE EXPLORED GOZO BEFORE YOU’VE GIVEN EACH OF THE VILLAGES THEIR DUE CONSIDERATION. ONE OF THE LARGER VILLAGES IN GOZO IS NADUR. SET ON A HILLTOP, THE VILLAGE OF NADUR STANDS VIGILANT FROM ITS VANTAGE POINT ON THE NORTHEASTERN SIDE OF THE ISLAND, OVERLOOKING THE ISLAND AND THE SEA.

Check out these things you need to see or visit while touring the village of Nadur in Gozo.

NADUR’S PARISH CHURCH – THE BASILICA OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL

Considered one of the gems on the island, the Nadur parish church is a basilica that dates back to the 18th century, and the elegant looks and embellishments that adorn the church are a more recent addition. In 1907, the church underwent a significant facelift through Maltese architect Francesco Saverio Sciortino’s opulent refurbishment in the Italian Renaissance style, including Italian marble and French glass window. Magnificent ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the lives of the patron saints St Peter and St Paul are the works of Lazzaro Pisani.

MIXTA CAVE

Thousands have visited Mixta Cave. The primordial call of the place overlooking the dreamy bay of Ramla is challenging to describe in words. The spot takes a different character according to the season, weather and time of day. Serene and dreamy in the sunshine, the place becomes magical at sunset and resonates with the spectacular vibe in the evening. Arriving at the spot involves following a long, winding country road, but it is all worth it.

MAXOKK AND MEKREK BAKERIES – HOME OF THE GOZO FTIRA

Suppose words are difficult to describe the ethereal scene from Mixta Cave. In that case, it is somewhat equally tricky to describe the smell of freshly baked bread, pizzas and traditional ftiras that wafts into the street from the bakeries that are so much known in Nadur. These

bakeries have become household names in Malta and Gozo and are synonymous with the best ftira in Malta. NADUR BEACHES - SAN BLAS BEACH, ST FILEP’S HIDDEN BAY AND DAĦLET QORROT

Nadur extends from the eastern tip of Ramla Bay to Daħlet Qorrot. This means that while in Nadur, one can easily take a slight detour to one of the breathtakingly beautiful beaches. San Blas beach lies at the bottom of a steep valley. Getting to the bay can be awkward, especially for those who shy away from precipitous descents, but once at the beach, the red sand and the quiet of the beach will make up for the effort. San Filep, considered one of Gozo’s secret beaches, is only reached via a footpath. Swimming and snorkelling in the crystalline transparent emerald waters is a joy. TA’ KENUNA TOWER, TA’ ISOPU TOWER AND THE MALTA NATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY

As a lookout post, towers are part of the Nadur’s landscape. The Isopu Tower standing on the promontory between San Blas and Daħlet Qorrot

dates back to 1667 when it was built by Grandmaster Nicholas Cottoner. One interesting quip about this tower is that its guns fired at the French fleet that had sailed from Toulon under General Napoleon Bonaparte.

The area around Ta’ Isopu Tower is also one which is favoured by astronomers. The zone is adequately dark and ideal for star observation. While the recently inaugurated observatory is a professional one and is not open to the public, public outreach events are in the pipeline.

Highly visible from different areas of Gozo, the British built Ta’ Kenuna Tower, which served as a telegraph tower. Today the tower is surrounded by a botanical garden that is part of a belvedere overlooking the views of Comino and the Gozo-Malta channel.

Lazarus Tiles is a project that seeks to preserve and document Maltese cement tiles which would otherwise be destined for the landfill. Started by Thomas Camilleri, these colourful and sometimes century-old tiles are sourced from building sites, renovation projects and even skips, before being restored and mounted in steel. That way, after a lifetime of bearing our weight, they can now enjoy their retirement looking at us instead. NEGOTIATING A COMMERCIAL LEASE AGREEMENT

Given the complexity of commercial lease agreements and the myriad of articles that form part of such contracts, it is always highly advisable to seek the guidance of an experienced commercial property negotiator, to ensure the best protection and outcome for you and your business. Regardless of whether you are the prospective lessee or lessor, this is an important and necessary step to avoid costly mistakes. Here are some of the salient clauses that form part of the commercial lease:

• The Term, or the period during which the lease is effective can include both a di Fermo period as well as a di Rispetto period. During the di Fermo period the Lessor usually establishes a fixed period of time during which the Lessee is liable for the payment of the rent. On the other hand, during the di Rispetto period, the Lessee has the option to terminate the lease agreement during this period without incurring any extra charges and penalties.

• The daily Rent of commercial property differs from property to property. However different perspectives arise with regards to the annual rate of increase. The average annual rate of increase is usually between 2% and 3%, and the main reason why this clause is introduced on the contract is to compensate the Landlord for the annual increase of prices as listed on the Retail Price Index (RPI) .

• Security Deposit : This deposit is held by the Landlord and refunded in full at the end of the lease on condition that the property is returned in a fair condition allowing for normal wear and tear with no damages being done to the property.

• Permits and Licenses: An integral part of any commercial lease is a paragraph which warrants and declares any valid permits and licenses of the Leased commercial property which include: Planning Authority (PA) permits, Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) licenses as well as any Lands Authority (LA) permit.

• Maintenance and repairs: As contemplated by Maltese law, all maintenance on the leased commercial property of an ordinary

nature should be carried out by the Lessee whilst any maintenance of an extraordinary nature should be carried out by the Lessor.

• Sublet : The norm is that the Lessee is not allowed to sublet or reassign the lease without the written consent of the Landlord.

• Insurance: The norm for the insurance clause is that the Lessor is responsible for insuring the building, whilst the Lessee is responsible for insuring the property relative to its use and also include a Public Liability clause.

• Termination: Termination clauses are vital to every commercial lease agreement. There are several instances where a lease can be ended such as the lease expiry, breach of contract ex. nonpayment of rent, termination due to force majeure etc. When negotiating terms at the commencement of a commercial relationship it is important to focus on how you and the other party can terminate that relationship. A party to a lease must always ensure they have contractual rights that allow them to terminate an agreement that ceases to be commercially/economically viable.

• Real Estate Agency Fees: According to long established industry norms - real estate fees are paid by both the lessor and lessee at the rate of 10% plus VAT each of one whole year’s rent. Such fees are due upon signing of the lease agreement and are nonrefundable.

HERE’S SUN ADVICE

APPLYING SUNSCREEN PROPERLY IS IMPORTANT TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF THE SUN.

Choose the right sunscreen: Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.

Look for products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply before sun exposure: Ideally, apply sunscreen about 1530 minutes before you go outsi de to allow it to fully absorb into your skin.

Most people don't use enough sunscreen, which reduces its effectiveness. As a general guideline, apply at least one ounce (about a shot glass full) of sunscreen to cover your entire face and body. Adjust the amount accordingly if you're wearing a swimsuit or exposing more skin. Don't forget commonly missed spots like your ears, back of the neck, tops of your feet, and the back of your hands and don't neglect your lips! Use a lip balm or lipstick with SPF to protect your lips from sun damage.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming, sweating excessively, or rubbing your skin with a towel. Even "water-resistant" sunscreens lose their effectiveness after a certain period of time, so it's important to reapply.

Remember, sunscreen is just one part of sun protection. Seek shade when the sun is strongest, usually between 10am and 4pm, and try to limit your direct sun exposure during these hours. If possible, wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses, in addition to using sunscreen. This provides an extra layer of protection.

Children need more protection and specific products are available for them, ask for advice at your pharmacy. Do check the directions for application on your suncream and seek medical advice if you see changes in your skin or suffer sun damage.

GOOD TO KNOW

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measure of how well a sunscreen can protect your skin from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. SPF primarily indicates the level of protection against UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburns and can contribute to skin cancer. The SPF number on a sunscreen bottle represents the product's ability to extend the time it takes for your skin to burn compared to not wearing any sunscreen. For example, if it takes 10 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 30 sunscreen theoretically allows you to stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning (10 minutes x SPF 30 = 300 minutes or 5 hours). It's important to note that SPF only measures protection against UVB rays, not UVA rays. Both UVA and UVB rays can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer, so it's essential to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of rays. While higher SPF numbers offer greater protection against UVB rays, it's important to remember that no sunscreen can provide 100% protection. SPF 30 is generally considered a good level of protection for daily use, but it's recommended to use SPF 30 or higher if you'll be spending an extended period of time outdoors or in direct sunlight.

GAME, SET AND SPLASH

WATER POLO IN MALTA HAS BEEN A POPULAR AND BELOVED SPORT FOR MANY YEARS. IN THE 2000s, IT EXPERIENCED A SURGE IN PARTICIPATION AND FAN SUPPORT.

Teams like Sliema ASC, Neptunes WPSC, and San Ġiljan ASC have passionate fans and exciting rivalries. The national water polo team also had success in international tournaments, making Malta proud. This is in part thanks to the local community and government who have shown great support for water polo, investing in facilities and training programs. This has helped to nurture young talent and ensure the sport's growth, bringing together enthusiastic players, fans, and a strong organisational structure.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Louise Cachia, the women’s National water polo team captain. She is also a strong player with the Sliema team. The women's league is currently celebrating its 10th season, and it has come a long way since its beginnings as just a Summer sport. Now, it has grown tremendously, with teams like Sliema, St Julians, Marsaskala, Exiles, and Sirens participating in the league. The women's teams have even set their sights on European qualification, which means they are going international.

As one of the biggest sports in Malta which is played throughout the year, players train both in the sea and in pools to refine their skills. The game itself involves 14 players, with 7 in the water at any given time - 6 players and 1 goalkeeper. As a sport, the closest it can be compared to is handball, but in the water. The game starts with a swim up, where 6 players from each end race for the ball. Each team has 30 seconds of attack time. A match consists of 4 sessions of 8 minutes each, although it can last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, depending on goals an d exclusions. With many goals being scored, it can be a highscoring game.

Water polo players need to be strong and undergo strength training in the gym, focusing on developing strong legs and swimming ability. Technical swimming training is also crucial since shots are taken with one hand. Players wrestle for the ball and rising out of the water for an accurate shot is necessary.

The most im portant games are held at the National Pool, and with many talented young players emerging, the younger girls are even playing with boys to improve their skills and contribute to their development in the sport. Team games are held in outdoor pools which are usually on the coast with restaurants and bars to feed the fans; so you can make an event out of going to a game.

Coming to watch water polo games in Malta is an exciting experienc e whether you're a local or a visitor. The atmosphere at these games is electric, with enthusiastic fans cheering on their favourite teams. The fierce rivalries between clubs create an intense and competitive ambiance, adding to the excitement of the matches. WORK STARTS ON RESTORATION OF AUSTRALIAN BUNGALOW

THOUSANDS OF MALTESE HAVE EMIGRATED TO OTHER COUNTRIES OVER THE PAST CENTURIES – BUT THE COUNTRIES THEY WENT TO VARIED FOR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL REASONS. IN THE EARLY 1900's, AS WORK IN MALTA BECAME HARDER TO FIND, ANOTHER WAVE OF EMIGRANTS LEFT THE ISLAND.

Australia realised that these emigrants came from very different backgrounds and in the 1920s sent typical houses in ‘kit form’ to all the Commonwealth countries, to give the migrants an idea of what to expect – as well as for training purposes.

Similar wooden buildings with high roofs and outhouses are found in many areas of Australia where they were designed to make the most of the climate and environment – but for the Maltese, they were a revelation. The island did not ha ve timber houses and there were elements – like the porticoes that ran along three sides of the building and sash windows – that were completely unheard of in Malta. The Bungalow – the only one sent to Malta – was made of three types of timber, with corrugated iron sheeting used for the roof. It was re-assembled at the private Bugeja Technical Institute (Istituto Tecnico Bugeja) in Ħamrun and by June 1929, 137 trainees had passed through the training centre, 39 of whom went to Australia.

Around 1930, the Bungalow was transferred to the experimental farm in Għammieri, where it was used as a lecture room by the Agricultural Services and Rural Development Division Department.

Over time, however, the building fell into disrepair and rainwater seeping in caused parts of it to rot – especially the floor. It was not until 2018 that the non-profit heritage organisation Din l-Art Ħelwa confirmed that it would be taking over restoration of the site. It was finally granted guardianship of the site in 2022, for a 15-year period.

Restoration has now started, a delicate project which is expected to take at least 12 months. The painstaking work involves

di smantling the Bungalow, restoring and replacing any missing elements, and re-assembling them – all under the watchful eye of experts in conservation. Each piece of wood is being numbered and m atched against detailed drawings so that the re-assembled buildin g will be as faithful as possible to the original.

However, once restored, the Bungalow will move from Għammieri. The pla ns are to relocate the Bungalow to the Ta' Qali Family Park where the Gover nment identifi ed a site that is more easily accessible to the public – reflecting the public interest anticipated! According to a Census carried out in Australia in 2021, there were 198,989 people of Maltese descent in Australia and 35,413 Malta-born people residing in the country at the time. Given the strong family ties, many of these visit Malta regularly – and Din l-Art Ħelwa is planning to use the Bungalow as an interactive repository for memorabilia and artefacts from this important period of Maltese history.

Articles about the restoration have appeared in Australian media and a radio interview was broadcast – in Maltese – aimed at the diaspora, as well as numerous posts about the era being put on social media. There is clearly a thirst for any details and Din l-Art Ħelwa is in touch with various entities to try to find out more about the Bungalow and its context in Maltese history.

CONNECTING ART WITH NATURE

WITH A DEEP APPRECIATION FOR NATURE, HISTORY, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND ART, LOCAL SCULPTOR RAPHAEL MIZZI INVITES US TO EXPLORE HIS SPECTACULAR WORLD OF BEACH CLAY SCULPTURES.

Raphael’s venture into the arts began in 2012 when he enrolled in a sculpting course at the Malta School of Arts, focusing on working with stone. This ignite d his passion for sculpting, and since then, he has constantly been seeking new avenues of creative expression.

And on this note, Raphael recalls the year 2019—that moment in time when he discovered his love for beach art. “I yearned for a natural setting where I could work with clay and create sculptures, and Għajn Tuffieħa Bay became the perfect choice. This picturesque location has become one of my favourite spots, providing me with accessible clay and a serene space to bring my artistic visions to life.”

The sculptor’s main sources of inspiration come from nature, with its everchanging landscapes and intricate details, as well as Europe’s rich history and archaeology. Further to this, Raphael is inspired by the works of some of the greatest artists in the history of art, particularly Michelangelo. “His mastery of sculpting and his ability to evoke emotions through his art resonates deeply with me. Drawing inspiration from his techniques and creative approaches, I strive to infuse my own unique voice and perspective into my sculptures.”

With this in mind, Raphael discusses how he often finds himself drawn to figurative forms and the inherent beauty found in natural materials. He explains that while examining the unique characteristics of each medium—be it stone, clay, or other materials—he unearths unexpected shapes and textures that guide his artistic vision.

Moving on to the process of creating a beach clay sculpture, Raphael experiments with a plethora of methods and techniques. “To begin, I gather grains of clay from the beach, which serve as the primary medium for my sculptures. The clay's natural texture and malleability allow me to mould and shape it according to my desired forms.”

Along side the clay, Raphael incorporates other natural elements found on the beach, such as driftwood to support the structure, as well as grass which acts as a filler to reduce the amount of clay. By combining all these resources together, Raphael ultimately creates unique and evocativ e artworks that resonate with the coastal landscape.

In general, Raphael explains that the whole creation process involves a combination of hand-building and sculpting techniques.

“I use my hands and simple tools to manipulate the clay, gradually building up the form and refining the details. This hands-on approach allows me to directly connect with the materials and infuse my sculptures with a sense of authentici ty and spontaneity.”

Given that these beach clay sculptures are temporary installations located in outdoor settings, Raphael believes that this instils a deeper connection between art and nature. As he puts it, “These sculptures are influenced by the waves and weather conditions, which gradually transform over time, reflecting the dynamic nature of the beach and its everchanging beauty.”

Needless to say, every beach clay sculpture that Raphael created stands out in its own way. He mentions his rendition of the Head of David by Michelangelo—a piece that is a true celebration of Michaelangelo’s iconic sculpture. “Using clay sourced from the beach, I carefully sculpted the facial features to capture the intensity and timeless beauty of the original masterpiece.”

Raphael has recently completed ye t another masterpiece. Whilst viewers stand in awe of his interpretation of the Mediterranean monk seal—also known as Il-Bumerin in Maltese, Raphael

explains that this sculpture serves a significant purpose beyond its artistic appe al.

“With Il-Bumerin , I wanted to convey a message and raise awareness about the critical situation faced by the Mediterranean monk seal. This species is currently at risk of extinction in the Mediterranean, and it is essential to bring attention to its plight. Moreover, the sculpture carries a historical significance specific to Malta. I wanted to remind people that the Mediterranean monk seal once called Malta home. I would be thrilled to see the monk seal return to our shores.”

By using art as a medium for this message, Raphael believes that he can make his mark on the world. “Ultimately, my goal is to create art that captivates and engages viewers, provoking a sense of wonder and connection to the world around us. Through my artistic endeavours, I hope to convey the beauty and complexity of nature while offering a glimpse into my own personal journey of exploration and self-expression.”

SAILING IN MALTESE WATERS CAN BE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW, PACK, AND APPRECIATE FOR YOUR TRIP.

Pack lightweight and breathable clothing suitable for warm weather. Include swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings. Don't forget to bring non-slip boat shoes or sandals with good grip. These should be brought in a soft bag; space on board can be limited. You won’t need hairdryers, tongs and other such devices.

If you're prone to motion sickness, it's wise to bring appropriate remedies such as over-the-counter medications or acupressure wristbands. Do also take sun cream and apply often.

If yo u're on a charter boat, respect the authority and instructions of the captain and crew. They have the knowledge and experience to ensure your safety and enjoyment during the trip. Be punctual and arrive at the designated meeting point or marina on time. Delaying departure can disrupt th e schedule and inconvenience others and may shorten the trip or result in missing a weather window you’d be unaware of.

Pay attention to safety briefings given by the captain or crew. Familiarise yourself with the location of safety equipment, emergency procedures, and any specific rules or regulations for the boat.

Keep noise levels to a minimum, especially during the quieter hours or when approaching anchorages. Respect the peaceful environment on board and the privacy of others. Take the time to appreciate the beauty of the landscape and enjoy the vibrant marine life.

Help keep the boat tidy and clean by picking up after yourself. Dispose of trash properly and do not throw any garbage or oth er items overboard. Freshwater is limited on a boat, so be mindful of your water consumption. Conserve water by taking shorter showers and turning off taps when not in use such as when brushing your teeth. The WC, called a ‘head’ on board, may have a manual flushing system. There are usually pictorial instructions on how to use it but do ask for a demonstration if you are unsure; remember, nothing that’s not natural should go into the bowl.

On a boat, space can be limited, so be considerate when using common areas. Avoid monopolising seating areas and storage spaces. Keep personal items organised and out of the way.

Most recently turning her hand to the art of aerial photography, Russian-born Troitskaia has embarked on a breathtaking photography tour of the world’s finest destinations, from Monte Carlo to the Maldives. Il-Bizzilla caught up with the daring Daria to find out more about her soaring journey.

I have travelled to many countries for my work, the most unusual being Antarctica. Last year I also visited the Arctic in Russia. I've been to South Africa, South America, Japan, China, and I’ve been to Taiwan with an exhibition - and many places in Europe.

My journey into this world began when I went to art school and studied art at university before working as a designer and art director. But it was living in Malta that brought me back to

photography. I love how diverse it can be. That it can be both street photography and fine art. There is no limit to perfection in photography - you can constantly evolve. It can be an excuse to learn a new subject, to travel, to get out of the house, or even to go for a walk. In a way, photography can be a great companion.

With street photography we are observers, life goes on, and photographers have to notice interesting scenes and manage to capture them on camera. In high-fashion photography, there’s a lot of preparation and teamwork. Firstly, you have to think through the script, select the right people, explain to the models what their role is, and then shoot the scene you've thought about. Street photography is more honest in this respect, but the objectives of these two types of photography are very different. Street

photography is a documentary art form, whereas high-fashion photography is a way of selling goods.

The idea to try helicopter aerial photography came to me quite naturally. I delved into the subject and began looking into its technical aspects. It soon became clear how many things have to be considered. After going through several options, including a military helicopter and a chopper used in local rescue operations, I managed to find a privately-owned helicopter that provided the flexibility I needed.

Before a trip, I have to study the route very carefully for various reasons. I use Google Maps to see an area and from this I can build my story and choose the right camera lenses. You need to estimate an approximate altitude for this and whilst you can change lenses inside the helicopter, it is preferable to equip yourself well and then work with the pilot to adjust the altitude.

The exercise is meticulous and helps me to make an approximate list of the places I want to shoot which I share with the pilot, so that they can ensure that the places you want to fly over are available, and that you don’t need any special permission to get there.

If you want to catch the sunrise or sunset, checking that the helicopter is equipped to be flown and land in low-light conditions is also key.

To be able to take photos from the outside of the craft, I wear a harness anchored to the aircraft before takeoff. It is much easier to get the right angle that way. Good communication with the pilot is paramount. The pilot needs to know when you are about to shoot so they can slow down, adjust altitude, turn, or even do a few rounds if necessary.

I like shooting the coastline and sea the most because the air is cleanest there and the sea is a stunning colour in Malta, thanks to the fact that the beaches are generally not sandy, but rock.

Last year I finished a still-life project which won many awards. I want to release it as a folder of art prints. I also want to draw a line under my works with aerial views by publishing a book. Of course, I will continue to shoot my personal projects, but I would also like to do some commercial projects where I can track the result of success, combining the client’s brief with my artistic vision. I also have some interesting trips planned – of course!

INGREDIENTS

400g good quality egg tagliatelle

300g peeled king prawns tails

250g cherry tomatoes, cut in half

4tbs of extra virgin olive oil

2 cloves of crushed garlic

1 small red chilli, chopped (optional)

40ml dry white wine

20 fresh mint leaves

METHOD

Heat 4tbs of extra virgin olive oil in a pan on a medium heat. After 30 seconds add the crushed garlic, red chilli, and prawns. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 1 minute before adding the white wine. Keep the pan on the heat, once the wine has evaporated, add the cherry tomatoes and gently toss for 1 minute.

Cook your tagliatelle in a large pan in salted boiling water according to the packet instructions. Once the tagliatelle is ready drain it in a colander and toss the tagliatelle with the prawn and tomato sauce. Add the fresh mint leaves and stir well until the ingredients are all combined.

If you’re travelling to Malta during the Summer months, there’s nowhere better to get a true sense of the island than by visiting a traditional festa . Held in most towns and villages across Malta and Gozo, these welcoming events are heavily based on traditions that go back to the late 1700s and are well-loved by locals and tourists alike.

This tradition started off as a way of celebrating the patron saint of each village or town. However, even though these festa s have religious roots, they involve a celebration that can be enjoyed by anyone, irr espective of their faith. Usually involving a street parade, fireworks, and music, celebrations can last all day and night!

And what’s a Maltese celebration without food?! Street food is often available from temporary market stalls that are set up just for that particular festa . All sorts of fast food is available such as hotdogs, burgers, doughnuts, and fries (to mention a few) but the main attraction is definitely the sweets. What can I say…the

Maltese have a very intense sweet tooth, and after you visit a festa and try some (or all!) of these delicious treats, you will not be able to blame us!

KANNOLLI

Kannolli are a staple at any sweet stall, and they’re proof that we cannot hide our Italian influence. These delicious pastries consist of a crispy, fried pastry shell filled with a creamy ricotta cheese mixture. The ricotta is sometimes flavoured with a hint of vanilla, adding a delightful twist to the traditional kannolli. Topped with powdered sugar, and sometimes drizzled with chocolate chips or candied fruit, each bite brings together the crunch of the shell, the smoothness of the filling, and the sweetness of the toppings. QUBBAJT (MALTESE NOUGAT)

A famous Maltese folklorist once said, "a feast without nougat is not a feast", and we wholeheartedly agree! Made with almonds, sugar, honey, and egg whites and wrapped up in colourful

packaging, the qubbajt tal-ħelu has a soft chewy texture, often studded with dried fruits and comes in different flavours. This nutty sweet treat is perfect to munch on while watching the fireworks, ideal to buy an extra packet for the flight home, and a must to take as a souvenir with you for your loved ones!

IMQARET

It’s never a traditional Maltese food list without imqaret ! These delectable treats are made by encasing a sweet date filling within a crisp, golden-brown pastry. The filling is normally a mixture of dates, sugar, and warm spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. The imqaret are then fried until they have just the right tempting crunch on the outside while still maintaining their soft filling. While imqaret are thoroughly enjoyed during a Maltese festa , they’re also delightful with a cup of tea or coffee!

ĦELWA TAT-TORK

Translating to ‘Turkish sweet’ in English, this traditional sweet treat is a dense, sticky, and fragrant nougat (yes, we love our

nougat!) made from ground almonds, sugar, honey, and a touch of rosewater. The mixture is carefully cooked until it reaches a chewy and firm consistency. Having a distinct almond flavour and delicate floral notes, ħelwa tat-tork offers an exquisite combination of textures and taste.

KARAMELLI

What can we say… you’re either going to love karamelli or hate them, but they’re definitely worth a taste! These bite-sized treats, also known as carob sweets, are made by boiling sugar and water until it reaches the desired caramelisation into a rich and golden syrup. This syrup is then poured into small cylinder shapes and left to cool and harden. The result? A hard candy with a sweet and caramelised flavour that lingers for hours on end!

The podcast features three women and the show’s host Trudy Kerr, sitting around a kitchen table, having ‘Conversations women rarely have, but really should’ whilst casually sharing a glass of wine. The show explores a wide range of female-centric topics such as Parenthood, Menopause, Body Image, Social Media, Relationships, Sex and much more. Since its launch in September ’22, The SHE Word has reached over 1.5 million collective views, ranking it in the top 10% of Spotify podcasts in the world, and amassing over 100,000 plays on YouTube, all thanks to its informal and refreshingly honest format.

After less than a year of its launch, The SHE Word format now extends to additional audiences. The month of July saw the launch of The SHE Word - Young Women’s Edition, hosted by Sasha Vella, activist and journalist for the show’s media partner Lovin Malta. This show specifically addresses the issues faced by younger women, aged between 18 to 26. Sasha’s direct but sensitive style helps the show navigate around topics that are rarely openly discussed between young women, but are having profound impact on them, such as body image, mental health and dating. MALTA’S FLAGSHIP FESTIVAL GLITCH RETURNS THIS MONTH FOR ITS 6TH AND BIGGEST EDITION

Over the years, Glitch Festival has quickly es tablished itself as the biggest festival in Malta as well as one of Europe’s major electronic festivals.

With 7 stages on offer, dancers are called to gather for a four-day journey driven by a carefully curated list of industry titans, master selectors, live acts & rising stars. From roaring rooftop pool parties to secret cave raves and an intimate Boiler Room stage, Glitch Festival spaces are attentively arranged to provide festival goers with the ideal spots to lose themselves in.

For their next edition, Glitch have announced no less than 68 acts, all heading to Malta for what promises to be a series of rhythmic adventures at the height of summer on the sun-soaked Mediterranean island.

Things will be kicking-off on Sunday 13th August with an explosive opening held right under the glorious fortifications of Valletta, a UNESCO world heritage gem, headlined by Helena Hauff, Hector Oaks and Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann.

The main fe stival will take place between the 14th and 15th at Gianp ula Village against a b ackdrop of the ancient medieval city of Mdina.

And finally, the 16th brings the festival to an end with boat party summer-magic followed by a heartfelt closing party with DJ Heartstring, Narciss and Patrick Mason, ensuring a perfect send-off.

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. SMOKING

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. T RANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided the device has 'Flight Mode' capability and that this is enabled. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off completely for the duration of the flight. Bluetooth wireless connectivity is allowed. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. The Cabin Crew will make an announcement on aircraft that are so equipped, to inform you when Wi-Fi can be enabled on your PEDs.

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN …

Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS

Larger devices (e.g. laptops) may be used during boarding and during the flight, however they must be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. 'Flight Mode' must be enabled. Use of Bluetooth connectivity is allowed. Use of Wi-Fi under Flight Mode is allowed on some aircraft which are equipped with an inflight entertainment system.

CAN I USE HEADPHONES?

Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
