“Champions

Simply put, without development today there are no

tomorrow

My time on the development team was not only instrumental in my journey as an athlete, it is also played a key role in shaping the person I am today. I learned not only how to race down a mountain, but how to behave like a champion long before I became one. The development team required my full commitment and attention, without any guarantees for success. To go through the necessary battles to learn how to compete with the best in the world takes an incredible amount of faith and support from those around you. It truly is a phase where athletes are asked to leap, not knowing if a net will appear.

The development team is a critical stepping stone for athletes to successfully move from their provincial team to the national team. This is the first time in the athletic development of a ski racer where they are provided the opportunity to train with the best of their peers across the country and around the world. It is the program that sets the foundation for making champions as the next generation of Canadian ski racers seek to win at the World Cup and Olympic level.

Martin Rufener, Athletic Director, Alpine

The Canadian alpine development program is a vital part of ski racing’s future. The goal of the “Young Guns” donor program is to support Canadian skiers in their quest to become the best of the best, under the guidance of world-class coaches and staff to give our country’s brightest young stars the support needed to become elite athletes. The development timeline of an Olympic champion spans many years and requires the symbiotic support of parents, clubs, coaches, provincial and national ski associations, through quality race events, training, projects and education. It certainly takes a village to raise an athlete. No ski racer becomes an Olympian on their own. The path is forged with dedicated coaches, teammates and supporters. Canada’s history of success in alpine ski racing spans generations. Our success at future World Cup and winter Olympic Games is fueled by ongoing and committed financial support from corporate partners

“full potential The development team unleashes your

The development team is the most important part of an athletes career. Not the first time I ever put on skis, or my first race, my first win or even the day I hopefully win a World Cup. My years on the development team were the hardest years of training I have done (and still do). Athletes find the most about themselves as an athlete and person when they are put in situations where they must push their limits and reach for the top. The development team is where you learn all your good hard working habits that you can take with you to the next level. It is an environment where the best young skiers in the country get world class coaching and training. It is an environment full of opportunity and exposure to higher competition. A lot will find it very tough, physically and mentally ... but that’s exactly what it is meant for; to push the limits of young athletes.”

what is the development team? The ACA Development program identifies elite U21 ski racers within the Canadian ski racing system, and provides athletic and financial support to bolster their continued success. These targeted athletes will be provided dedicated on snow training programs, support for Nor-Am series and world junior races, and world-class dryland training programs (strength & conditioning, nutrition, mental performance, sports medicine) centered at our CSI Calgary offices. ACA Development programs also accommodate those targeted athletes who have chosen to pursue postsecondary education and high performance ski racing.
