Resident Feature
Meet the
Armfield family: From London to Blackhawk By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
C
assandra and Toby Armfield never meant to settle down in Blackhawk. What was supposed to be a fun American adventure for a few years turned into purchasing a forever home, getting a dog and setting roots in a new country. Both born and raised in the United Kingdom, they had an established life in London with two young kids, family and friends. Then Cassandra says Toby came home from work one day with some interesting news, “He said he had been offered a job in California. I asked him if he said yes, and the rest is history. In 2013 we packed our bags and set out on what was supposed to be a fun adventure in California for a few years.” Cassandra adds that she thinks ending up in America was meant to be as several generations of her family nearly ended up here. “My Grandfather was American, he met my grandmother during World War II. They met in Paris, where my grandmother was is the British army. My grandfather was in the US Air Force and after the war ended they had my mother in London. My grandfather went
on to Germany, then back to Wilmington, Delaware. My Grandmother decided not to travel to America to the unknown and stayed in London with her young daughter, my mother. My mother never got to meet her American father and years later when she was a young woman, she met a man in the US Air Force, but again declined an invitation to travel to America with him. Now, three generations later, the time was right for us to live in America.” Cassandra was born and raised in Kent, England and Toby was born in London then moved to Kent when he was older. Toby went to University in North Wales and studied business and management. He says he began his career as a tax consultant in London, but ultimately ended up working in IT. “I worked at Accenture and EMC in London and across Europe before the opportunity arose to move to California to work for Visa in San Mateo. Now I’m back at Dell EMC working from a combination of Blackhawk and airline lounges,” says
6
Toby. Cassandra’s career in London revolved around investment banking, but after having her daughter, Olivia, she realized she was not able to work the hours expected of her, and her investment banking career came to a halt. Since relocating to Blackhawk, Cassandra has started a new career as a destination consultant/relocation specialist. “I help relocate and settle in expats to the East Bay, primarily in San Ramon, Danville and Blackhawk. I also help to manage an expat Facebook group called Danville Area Expats,” says Cassandra. A mutual friend introduced Toby and Cassandra. Cassandra says it took a while for her to catch on that he was interested in her. “Toby used to spend lots of time chatting with me and making me laugh at a local club. Little did I know he was flirting with me and wanted to date. Once I caught on, we were inseparable. In 2004, Toby proposed while we were on vacation in Sorrento, Italy. The following year we were married in an outdoor ceremony in Kent, England.” JANUARY 2019
Their two children, 10-year-old Olivia and 8-year-old Emilia keep the Armfield’s life full of fun and laughter. Oliva enjoys reading, singing, skiing and gymnastics while Emilia is a soccer girl and enjoys being a Girl Scout. The family is completed by their dog Oscar. “As soon as we bought the house, we wanted a dog. We went to a few shelters but didn’t see one that would fit our lifestyle. Then a friend mentioned she saw a dog on Craigslist that we should take a look at. It was an adorable one-year-old boy that was already potty trained. It sounded perfect to us. Once we brought our Craigslist dog home we realized he was a little bit crazy, but totally adorable. The first few days he raced around the house jumping and bouncing off every piece of furniture, and we found out the hard way that he was not potty trained! So we went back to basics, and now we have the best dog. He swims with the kids, can catch a ball, loves to be pushed around by the girls in a doll’s stroller and best of all, he loves to curl up with us and cuddle,” says Cassandra.
The Silver Maple community is where the Armfields purchased their home two years ago. They visited a friend who lived in the area and fell in love. It just so happened that the friend’s neighbor was selling her house; the Armfields decided to make an offer. The rest is history. “We got really lucky with our neighborhood. We have the best neighbors; we have neighborhood dinners, carpool together, have a street party over Christmas time, and an annual Easter egg hunt.
We are so thankful we moved into such a nice community, to have kind and friendly neighbors is a true blessing,” says Toby.

Exploring The City
Day Trip to San Francisco… And Beyond By Melanie Warner and Jo Peek, Resident since 2014
S
ure, you might have been to San Francisco but I guarantee you have never seen it from this perspective. We attended a progressive food tour of the emerging Tendernob district with Avital Tours (avitaltours.com), a unique and immersive tour company that features walking tours highlighting the history, culture, food and cocktails in San Francisco. We chose the North Beach Tour where our guide, Philip, led us to old-school Italian favorites like Cioppino at Sotta Mare with the owner’s family recipe, along with Tommaso’s - the first restaurant to introduce pizza to the West Coast in 1935 with their 850-degree pizza oven. People Magazine named them #3 pizza place in the U.S.
We also visited China Live, where we enjoyed Peking duck with kumquat glaze. The $20-million rebuild took four years to complete and it was just voted best restaurant in San Francisco. Check out the speakeasy upstairs with a blade-runner-meets-FrankLloyd- Wright theme. We finished off with tiramisu at Pasta Pop-Up - a farm to table restaurant utilizing traditional Italian culinary techniques.
Tommaso’s famous pizza oven
The eclectic and progressive food tour offers so many incredible adventures in the Bay (plus LA and New York spots) it would take a week to do them all. It makes for a creative date night or passionate excursion unlike anything you have experienced. Avital guides Philip Hall & Camille Holmes

Four Hard Truths By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: JWM Wealth Management, LLC
R
egarding any Financial Plan, it is important to remember these four hard truths:
1. There are only two possible financial outcomes to your life. Your money either outlives you or you outlive your money. Everyone reading this will experience one of those outcomes. 2. Failing to plan is planning to fail. With a well thought out financial plan in place that is adjusted for reality over time, your money has a chance of outliving you. Without a plan, this isn’t very likely. 3. We have been taught that the real risk is losing our investment principal. In fact, the real risk is outliving our purchasing power. Over a 30-year retirement, inflation is the primary culprit, not market volatility. 4. Your plan lives and breathes. From changes in the market to changes in tax law or your personal goals, your plan must live and breathe along with your actual life’s experiences and wishes. A one-time plan isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.
Whether your plan is in your head, in an excel spreadsheet, or managed by a professional, there is no doubt the above four hard truths must be accepted for your money to have a chance at outliving you. A Sincere Thank You to the Residents of Blackhawk By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.
I have been lucky enough to serve the Blackhawk community for 30 years, and I wanted to take this time to say thank you and Happy New Year. It has truly been one of the highlights of my life to work in such a special place. Life can get hectic and busy, and we can let too much time pass without stopping to show gratitude and appreciation. So that’s what I would like to dedicate this month’s article to. When I started Atlantis Pools 30 years ago, I had no staff. It was just me and a strong desire to help people with a quality business they could rely on. Since that time, I have always strived to be the best for our customers. No matter how much technology changes the way we do business, nothing will ever replace outstanding customer service. Happy customers are our goal, and we try our best to accomplish it every day. For all who read this, thank you for supporting us over the years, it has been a pleasure to serve you for more than three decades.
I also want to thank Blackhawk Living Magazine. Being a part of this wonderful publication has changed the way I see my business. Blackhawk Living is run by good, local people who pour their heart and soul into making this a great local magazine. Thank you to Jo Peek for starting such a high-quality magazine in our community and to Megan Scott for all your monthly articles and content. Please don’t hesitate to call us for all your pool needs and we will do our best to serve you well. Thank you Blackhawk!

San Francisco Shines Bright By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

ne of my favorite things about the holidays is to go see the city all decked up with holiday lights, tinsel trim and colorful glittery displays that further add to San Francisco’s stunning and magical vibe. For the most part, I love hanging out in the sparkling Union Square and getting awed by the decorative enchanting holiday store windows that are so elaborate and bring lots of joy to all the passersby on Stockton and O’Farrell Streets. The perfect place to click a holiday photo is by the 83 foot Christmas tree with more than 33,000 twinkling lights and 1,100 shining ornaments. Every year, my daughter loves to skate at the holiday ice skating rink here, a wondrous holiday tradition. This is definitely a festive part of town to dine and walk around, to listen to some holiday music on the streets and in the stores, to do some holiday shopping and soak in the holiday cheer. Holiday lights are one of the simple pleasures of the holiday season and nobody does it better than Blackhawk. It’s a joy to drive around Blackhawk and see all the holiday lights illuminating the homes and sometimes the entire street.

The New Age of Adult Orthodontics By Richard Anthony, DDS MS – Blackhawk Orthodontics
T
hese days, people of all ages want to straighten their teeth. In fact, a huge number of adults are hopping on the braces bandwagon to get the grin they have always wanted. Since the early ‘90s, the percentage of adult patients in the typical American orthodontic practice has grown from less than 5% to over 30% of the total patient population. Most orthodontists agree it is definitely the fastest growing segment of their practice. Today’s teeth are staying stronger longer. “A generation ago, adults didn’t always keep their teeth, much less straighten them,” says Leslie A. Will, DMD, of Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. We have gone beyond tooth survival she adds. “People want their teeth to be healthier. They want their bite to be better, and they want them to look great.” Adult orthodontic therapy frequently does not always involve fullmouth (comprehensive) treatment, as is most common in young patients. But rather, may only involve a partial segment of teeth (limited treatment) that is often related to some other necessary dental procedure such as a veneer, crown, of implant restoration. Whether the proposed orthodontic treatment is comprehensive
or limited in scope, most adult patients have alternate options other than traditional metal braces-such as ceramic toothcolored braces or Invisalign clear removable aligners-to move the teeth. Adult patients also need to know what they are getting into before committing to orthodontic treatment. If there is active gum disease, that will need to be treated before initiating orthodontic therapy. Also, once treatment has started, you will need to make time for the office visits every 4 to 6 weeks, watch carefully what you eat so you don’t break the braces, and plan to brush and floss longer than before. As long as your teeth, bones, and gums are healthy enough—it is never too late to create a more perfect smile!

Community Safety
Day or Night - Who is Watching Your House? By Aaron “Wally” Barger, Resident since 2012
H
ome security is an integral part of a person’s sense of safety. However, many of us need to enhance even our basic level of protection. Burglaries and home invasions, although not common in Blackhawk, are a very disruptive force in a family’s life both financially and emotionally. Homeowners have many options in providing adequate coverage and protection from burglaries and robberies. Modern technology offers a wide range of methods to ensure personal property protection. As I have noted in previous articles, the simple act of strategically leaving a few lights inside and outside of your home at night can be an effective deterrent. Here are a few ideas that may prove useful for nighttime protection. The first is to always keep at least one interior night light on all night. The second is to keep an outside light in the front and in the back of your house on all night long. The third, and even better,
is to install a series of motion sensitive lights that surround the exterior of your house and property. A number of homes in Blackhawk have increased lighting their homes in much the way just described. But, the fact that crimes of opportunity can strike day or night requires all of us to consider ways in which we can better protect our home and property.

For example, there are several other security systems that can add to your family’s safety and protection. The first is a simple door chime and camera system. A more elaborate method of security is to include a network of alarm sensors throughout the house, which are motion sensitive or activated by opening a door or window. Far more sophisticated alarm services include motion detection cameras, with night vision capability, networked throughout the interior and exterior of the home and property If you have any questions about security systems for your home and property, contact the Blackhawk Police Department at 925-6462441 for additional information. If you see a suspicious individual peeking into your home or on your property, do not approach or confront suspicious individuals. Instead, call the Blackhawk Police at 925-646-2441. Considerations When Adding an In-Law Suite By Jim Long, S&J Properties, General Contractor, Resident since 1991
M
ultigenerational households are on the rise, but there’s a lot to consider when dreaming up a new space for mom or dad. Creating a distinct space at home for an aging parent to move into, whether it’s a separate backyard unit, a converted basement or bedroom or an added-on suite, is a major undertaking. But with its added peace of mind, potential savings and investment value, flexibility and emotional reward, it’s an undertaking that may be worth the effort for the right family. So how can homeowners know whether building out a home within-a-home for their loved ones is the best decision for them? Here are a few questions you can ponder before getting to work. Will Your House and City allow It? The first thing homeowners need to determine is whether they’d be able to add an in-law suite to their property at all. City and municipal zoning ordinances and permitting requirements can get in the way of this type of construction or renovation, particularly if someone wants to build or convert a space that’s not attached to the main house. In the case of a separate structure (also known as an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU), many cities forbid or carefully restrict additional plumbing or gas lines, among other features. What Accessibility Concerns Need to Be Addressed? When adding an in-law suite, homeowners should be thinking through everything from including reinforced walls and grab bars to choosing mood-boosting paint colors. Other aging friendly design choices include flooring that’s not too slippery and not too textured and closely cropped carpet, minimal clutter, doors and hallways that are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers, lipless showers to prevent tripping and low-maintenance everything.
significant investment, but it can also be a wise one. It may be a more affordable option than long-term nursing care. The national average cost for semi-private and private nursing home rooms has continued to grow in recent years, with private rooms costing nearly $8,000 a month. When these suites are built using a universal design, they may make a home more valuable down the road, as there are so few houses available that are accessible to everyone. Is It a Good Fit for Your Family? Even if you have the ideal house for it, the in-law suite setup isn’t right for everyone. It can be a lot for an adult child to take on emotionally and it could create family strife. Communication and talking through all the ways this type of change will affect all members of the family is key. If you are thinking of new remodeling ideas, getting the help from a qualified professional builder is worth the investment and long run value.
Pest Control Weed Control Tree Service
What’s Your Long-Term Plan? Maybe your parents aren’t ready to move in with you, but you’d like to keep the option open in the future. Are there other things you could do with the space in the meantime? Are you able to rent it out? Use it as an office or guest room? Could it work as an apartment for your own adult children in a few years? What do you plan to do with it if your parent moves into an assistedliving facility or passes away? Along with planning ahead, even if your parents don’t plan to move in permanently, a separate suite might make sense for frequent longer visits, particularly if they’re visiting from far away. Does It Make Financial Sense? Accessory dwelling units present some financial challenges because many cities don’t have a lot of them for comparison, making it harder to get financing for their construction. It’s a 24

he Holidays are over, bringing a new chapter in our lives. For high schoolers this means the start of second semester. We made it through the stressful finals in December and rightfully earned our two week vacation! We got to spend time with family and friends, for that is what the holidays are all about. In my case, my family and I traveled to Utah and Tahoe, where I had an amazing time skiing with my family! Winter break is always a time to make new memories that last a lifetime. Before the end of the year, many of our talented students got to show off their talent at the dance show and the choir performance. At the dance show, each dance class presented a few routines.

Ready or not— kindergarten here I come. By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School
M
ost parents don’t take a cavalier approach with their child’s first formal educational experience. However, over-analyzing every move a four-year-old makes isn’t productive either. So, how do parents determine if their child is ready to begin kindergarten? The first consideration is usually age because most private and public schools have a cut-off date: the date by which a child must be five. However, experts agree that chronological age is only one piece of the puzzle. It should not be the determining factor. A child’s social/emotional, physical, academic, and learning preparedness are the considerations which should help guide the decision. Being ready to learn can be critical to success at school. For a child about to enter kindergarten, look at how well he communicates and listens. Does he speak in complete sentences most of the time and understand and follow two-step directions? Is he focused and attentive when a book is read? Is he able to wait when the need arises? Can he successfully follow a routine?
It can be difficult for parents to objectively assess their own child’s readiness for kindergarten. So, seek the opinion of skilled educators, childcare providers, or adults who know your child well. Meld their assessment with your own so that you can make an informed determination as to whether your child is “ready or not to begin kindergarten. Are you considering private education for your child entering kindergarten through eighth grade? The first ten parents to phone The Dorris-Eaton School (925.930.9000) and mention this article will have the $250 evaluation fee waived.
Another consideration is academic readiness. Being curious is key. Does your child wonder about the world around him and ask questions? After hearing a story, is he able to reasonably retell the story and connect it to his own life? Letter and number recognition shows readiness. A conceptual understanding of math includes the ability to count, recognize one-to-one correspondence, and identify quantity—groupings which show greater than and less than. Sometimes there is a tendency to overemphasis a child’s cognitive ability. A child’s social/emotional development is critical to enjoying school and being successful. Can your child express his feelings? When interacting with other children, how well does he share, take turns, compromise, and problem solve? Assess your child’s independence. Is he able to separate from you, dress himself, and take responsibility for his belongings?
Anytime. Anywhere. Any day... Roger Fernando Ins Agcy Inc Roger Fernando, Agent Insurance Lic#: 0F17071 2200 Camino Ramon San Ramon, CA 94583
Fine- and gross-motor skills are also important. Does your child use drawing or writing tools with control and intention? Can he copy a straight line, circle, and triangle? When drawing himself, does his picture have a head, body, arms, and legs? In terms of gross-motor skills, look at how well your child catches and bounces a ball. Is he able to hop on one foot, jump, and run in a straight line? 1101198.1

Fibro-myalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a set of symptoms that exist together creating a greater chance of developing the disease... Fibromyalgia is characterized by: 1. Increased sensitivity to pain 2. Eleven to eighteen tender points called trigger points 3.
Incapacitating fatigue
4. Widespread pain lasting for more than three months There are several theories about what causes fibromyalgia. Generally they are categorized as: •
Hormonal disturbance: Menopause
•
Low HGH levels; low serotonin
•
Increased level of “Substance P” pain amplification
•
Sudden micro-trauma to brain and spinal cord
•
Genetic tendency to depression and anxiety
•
Chronic stress cycle of pain, fatigue, lack of sleep
A person with CFS Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also has two or more of these symptoms: Problems with concentration, short-term memory, or thinking of the right word, being very sensitive to light, noise, or emotions, confusion, slow thinking, or feeling disoriented, muscle weakness or muscle coordination problems. Different people with CFS have different combinations of light-headedness and
dizziness, very fast heartbeat, or shortness of breath, urinating often, nausea, or irritable bowel syndrome, cold hands and feet, sweating, or trouble with heat or cold, feeling worse when under stress and weight change or appetite change. Diagnostic tests include a full chemistry panel, thyroid, glucose test, urine test, ESR to check for inflammation markers and a test for anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) and Epstein Barr virus. Once you are diagnosed with fibromyalgia and/or CFS you have several treatment options. Medications for pain relief, to relax the muscles, induce sleep and or build the immune system may be prescribed. Many medications have serious side –effects and need to be supplemented with lifestyle changes to cope with that problem, First and foremost :Manage your energy level by energy conservation techniques; see a physical therapist to work with your muscles and exercise to restore function. Consult an occupational therapist to
show you how to modify your activities, to avoid pain in your daily life. Stress management and meditation, eating a diet full of vitamins and minerals go a long way to help. Try and get enough good quality sleep each day. And remember to go with the flow!

Wine, Food, Golf & Fun
San Diego:
America’s Finest City By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
In an effort to dine at all 3000 San Francisco restaurants(900 and counting), my wife Linda and Hall-of-Famer son MJ recently traveled to sun splashed San Diego to experience food, golf, wine and fun with lucky friends who live there. From the Oakland Airport, it is an easy 1 hour flight. Southwest Airlines offers many choices to meet your travel needs. We stayed at Morgan Run Resort in Rancho Santa Fe offering “something for everyone” to fill your day. The Resort is an easy 40 minute drive from the San Diego Airport. They offer 69 reasonably priced boutique rooms located right on the golf course. The rooms are nicely appointed with fireplaces, spacious, and close to the spa, tennis courts, golf pro shop and Gene Littler Lounge. Famous golfer Gene Littler is also a resident and is often seen mingling with the members and guests. The Littler Lounge has a fascinating picture gallery of his many golf accomplishments and 2 of his favorite golf clubs. He was known as “Gene The Machine,” inducted into the World Golf Hall Of Fame and won the prestigious US Amateur and a US Open. Great food, exotic drinks, wine, micro brews and multiple large screen TV’s make it a great place to unwind after a round of golf, tennis or spa treatment. There is also outside seating and fire pits with great views to enjoy the low humidity perfect year around weather. The golf course features 27 nicely manicured golf holes. It is a very friendly course to walk for those who want more exercise and do not like to ride around in a golf cart. There are 4 tee choices to meet every golf skill level. Linda found the lady’s tees to be very friendly and fair. She experienced “golfing joy” when she got a near ace and birdie on a very challenging par 3. On the way from the San Diego airport, we stopped in nearby and sensational San Diego to explore the famous San Diego Gas Lamp District. After strolling around, we decided to dine at Los Ponchos De Charly and enjoyed their 17 year history of great Mexican food and music. We sat on the patio and enjoyed people watching, great weather, Cadillac Margaritas, quesadillas and their wet burrito that were all prepared to perfection. The Gas Lamp district is a fun, fantasy foodie collection of great restaurants, jazz clubs, hotels and interesting shops. Morgan Hill Resort is also located very close to Jake’s Del Mar Restaurant located right on the beach of the clear, blue Pacific Ocean. It has a vibrant atmosphere and always packed with happy patrons watching the surfers and sensational sunsets. Reservations are highly recommended.
This was “Déjà Vu” for us as we were there in 2008 for the US Open held at famous Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines is also scheduled to host another US Open in 2021. We were guests of the Golf Channel in 2008 when our son MJ won the essay contest for the” Fathers Day US Open Contest”. His essay was selected from 25 thousand essays submitted. We were also recognized on National TV on Father’s Day during the final day of the US Open. Jake’s Del Mar Restaurant brought back these vivid, magical memories eternally deposited in our rich memory banks. We enjoyed fish so fresh that you thought it was just caught in the ocean that was only a few steps from our table. We especially enjoyed the crispy calamari, lobster spring rolls and lightly pistachio crusted Mahi Mahi with a side order of perfectly seasoned cauliflower. The meal was highlighted with their famous” Hula Pie” dessert. This sinful creation is made with creamy Macedonia nut ice cream, a delicate chocolate cookie crust and a generous amount of heavenly hot fudge. It is a very large proportion and recommended to be shared with 2-4 people. On our final day, we enjoyed “fun in the sun” at nearby La Jolla. This classy oceanside town features pristine beauty, a variety of boutique shops and great restaurants. We dined at George’s On The Cove and enjoyed exceptional views and foodie fun created by Trey Foshee. Trey has been voted one of the best chefs in America, and we were not disappointed. We dined on the third floor ocean terrace and enjoyed stunning views and carefully crafted food presentations. They are open for lunch and also offer elaborate price fixed dinners in the evening. Reservations are also highly recommended at this well-known foodie refuge. We enjoyed an elegant lunch beginning with George’s Famous soup made with smoked chicken, broccoli, and black beans and shared George’s fresh albacore fish sandwich, fish tacos and crunchy french fries that was enhanced with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean Cove and soft, warm sunshine. In conclusion, it is no wonder that many corporations have conferences in San Diego and many tourists visit from all over the world. “America’s Finest City” has perfect year round weather filled with happy, proud residents and is a “must do” to add to your bucket list. Prediabetes: Are You at Risk? By Judi Magee, Resident since 2014
H
appy New Year! I know the topic of diabetes doesn’t spring to mind when making New Year’s Resolutions, but maybe it should. Being prediabetes means that your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be type 2 diabetes. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states, “Approximately 84 million American adults—more than 1 out of 3—have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, 90% don’t know they have it. Prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.”
physical activity means getting at least 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or a similar activity. That’s just 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
So what is Prediabetes? What we eat or drink is broken down into sugar (glucose) that our cells need for energy and is transported throughout the body through the bloodstream. Moving glucose from the bloodstream to our cells requires the help of insulin that is secreted from the pancreas. As insulin circulates, it allows glucose to enter your cells — and lowers the amount of glucose in your bloodstream. As your blood sugar level drops, so does the secretion of insulin from your pancreas.

Have you added diabetes prevention to your New Year Resolution list? It’s certainly worth thinking about. Wishing you Good Health this New Year,
National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach with a Masters in Health and Wellness Coaching from Maryland University of Integrative Health.
Prediabetes marks a change in how glucose is processed in the body. Instead of entering the cells, your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or your cells become resistant to the action of insulin, or both, and glucose builds up in the blood instead of moving into the cells. When high levels of glucose stay in the bloodstream, it deprives cells of energy and over time can do damage to your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart. What are the Risk Factors? It’s important to talk to your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested if you have any of the risk factors for prediabetes, which include: • • • • •
Being overweight Being 45 years or older Having a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes Being physically active less than 3 times a week Ever having gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or giving birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
Lifestyle Changes Prediabetes is real. It’s common. And most importantly, it’s reversible. You can prevent or delay prediabetes from developing into type 2 diabetes with simple, proven lifestyle changes.
(925) 449-1203
The CDC recommends; if you have prediabetes, losing a small amount of weight if you’re overweight and getting regular physical activity can lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. A small amount of weight loss means around 5% to 7% of your body weight, just 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person. Regular 32

New Year’s Resolutions for the Home By Linda Kralik, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Drysdale Properties, Resident since 1984
C
hristmas is a distant memory. New Year’s celebrations are over. The cold reality of winter is here. What to do now? Time to address the coming of 2019 with some New Year Resolutions. No, not the ones that we dust off every January like going to the gym daily; going on a diet; more family time; holding to the household budget, etc.; those discarded resolutions that do not even make it to the month of February. We are talking about serious resolutions for the home. So, take a look at these household resolutions for a brighter New Year. 1. Exercise: No excuses — that clutter has got to go! Start by creating more storage space. As you are putting away those cherished Christmas decorations, take a long look at those you did not put out. Maybe it is time to re-organize the garage and look at what you did use over the past years and what is just taking up residence when more storage is needed!! This is a serious exercise in both physical (up and down the ladder and lifting boxes, etc.) as well as mental (deciding what stays and what needs to be donated or tossed.) 2.Dieting for the Home: Notorious for gluttony is your energy usage around the house.

Look for ways to conserve energy. A good place to start is your HVAC duct work. Duct work for your heating and air conditioning systems can leak your heating and cooling air through holes and loose connections. Servicing of your heating and cooling systems will make your home more comfortable, and a more-efficient system helps extend the life of your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump. Installing LED lights and have outdoor lights on timers will also reduce your energy usage. 3. Family Time: Quality Family time is like a vacation, yet you are still at home. It takes planning and scheduling, just like a vacation — but it’s worth the effort. Find a project that the whole family will enjoy and make it special. Maybe plant a special tree, like a memorial tree. Dedicate it to someone or something special that everyone agrees. Fire up the SUV and shop for a tree that’ll become a new member of your family. Have your kids name it and help care for it. Buy a simple plaque to install at the base. 4. Budget: Large companies set aside money “in reserve” to deal with yearly replacements of old equipment. Household budgets should do the same. Creating a yearly budget for home improvement and maintenance will help prevent overspending, and encourages you to put aside money for major replacements — such as new roofing or a kitchen appliance — that come up every few years. 5. Volunteer: Our world today seems to be a little more turbulent. There are more headline stories of heinous crimes against humanity, with little compassion. Maybe this would be a good time to keep a resolution to help make this world a better place. Altruism is not dead, it just needs a jumpstart, and you are the one to make it happen. You can start by looking into volunteer programs in your neighborhood. Maybe promoting safety like a Neighborhood Watch. Or become a Meals on Wheels volunteer. There are many to choose from, and make it a family plan so everyone is involved. I sincerely wish all of you the Happiest of New Year’s. May 2019 be filled with Joy and Love. LK BLACKHAWK LIVING 33

Ring in the New Year with a New Look! By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident Since 1989
Happy New Year from our family to yours!
H
ave you been thinking about resetting your diamond engagement ring into a new mounting? This is the perfect time to kick off the New Year by re-doing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis can show you the hottest new styles that you will be sure to love. There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting. Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, was not a design you truly wanted, or fell head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s Instagram account? When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more cost-effective than others. The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. You can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations. The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring. Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options. Still love your ring the way it is? Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do! Whatever you choose, your rings should be always reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any
way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, give us a call or shoot us an email! Concierge@padisjewelry.com
