This edition, TopicUK Kirklees/ Calderdale is celebrating it’s third Birthday. How the time has flown.

Stafflex Recruitment Costa Coffee Sainsbury’s Market Street,

I can honestly say that we have been on an amazing journey publishing TopicUK, not just in Kirklees / Calderdale but across the district, as it has enabled us to meet so many fantastic people and businesses. When we launched TopicUK, the sole aim was to help local businesses promote their business affordably. This is something that we still proudly do today and judging by the amount of emails and phone calls we receive, this concept works. There are very few, if any publications that work in the way we do, promoting not just in print and PR but now by video on TopicTV and interactively through our networking events. Our service also extends to other media too, we quite often work as a full PR service to our partners. This issue we are delighted to feature the lovely Nicky Pattinson. From Holmfirth, I think many of our readers will know of Nicky and for those who have been lucky enough to have met her, you will know what a vibrant and innovative person she is. Nicky is to be on of the guest speakers at the L4N Conference, partnered by TopicUK, on 23 June at the Moorland Inn in Halifax. If you haven’t reserved your place yet, there are still a few tickets available. Visit the website at: https://l4nuk.com to reserve your place and check out the other speakers on the day. For a second year, we are also proud to be partnering the KACCL lunch

Huddersfield and Brighouse store Heritage Business Centre Ramsdens Solicitors (Kirklees & Calderdale Charity Lunch) that will take place at Cedar Court Hotel on 7 December. Tickets are just £50 for this great cause that raises thousands of pounds for local charities, the inaugural lunch last year raised an incredible £18k. This year the goal is £24. To reserve a ticket, or indeed why not a table and make it your firm’s official Christmas lunch, visit http:// kaccl.uk.

Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors

We were delighted to see TopicUK partner Orchard FM named in the UKs top 30 most caring companies. Award organisers said they were chosen because they were recognised as big hearted, rather than treating CSR as a tick box exercise. Read the full story on page 16.

Finally, we have now settled into our new office within Chadwick Lawrence building in Wakefield. As Chadwick Lawrence are one of our partners, working with us in both Kirklees / Calderdale and Leeds, we are delighted that they have allowed us use of their offices and meeting rooms across the district. K&CUpdate The acquisition of 1460sqft of additional space marks the latest phase of significant expansion for the award-winning cosmetic dentistry specialists.

News Update

Greg risess through the ranks Greg Watson, 22, has been promoted in his role at Huddersfield based marketing agency, Hellomint after just six months. Greg joined the team as a Graduate Marketing Executive in August having completed a degree in English Literature at The University of Manchester. He has quickly shown potential using his writing skills to write engaging blogs, online content and PR. Managing Director of Hellomint Nicola Mellor was so impressed with his performance she promoted Greg to the role of Content Manager with a particular focus on Hellomint’s B2B clients.

Growth gives private Huddersfield dental practice reason to smile Huddersfield-based private dental practice The Courtyard has purchased its fourth premises in the centre of the town, to help pave the way for further growth.

With 1,200 registered patients – and plans to enrol a further 300 during 2017 – The Courtyard has evolved to become a 15-strong team. And, with interest in proactive dental care, implants, veneers and Invisalign* continuing to rocket, founder Marcos White has his eyes on the recruitment of four more colleagues before the year end. This ongoing development of staff comes following a £¼ million investment in new dentistry technology over the past two years. As a result, The Courtyard is now the only practice in the North of England with a lab that houses this level of digital scanning, 3D printing and CAD CAM capabilities on-site. And this investment in property, people and processes is set to continue, says Marcos. “I joined this practice in 2003, bought it 18 months later aged 28 and, in

In his new role Greg will have increased responsibility, making sure all content produced by Hellomint is effective, of excellent quality and consistent with each client’s individual tone of voice. Greg enthused about his new promotion: “I’m so happy to have been promoted after just six months with the business. Coming to the company from university, I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first job but my experience couldn’t have been better. The team have been so welcoming and it’s rewarding to have had my hard work recognised so early on in my career!” Nicola said: “Greg’s been a great asset to the team. He’s shown a real flair for writing and creating a great relationship with clients. I’m really proud of how far he’s come in such a short space of time and I’m sure he’ll continue to do extremely well in his new role.” Marcos and Anna ©2016 Dan Dalton Photography

2009, I decided to go private. I wanted to do something different by creating a relaxing environment where people could genuinely feel comfortable, and the ethos of The Courtyard soon began to take shape. “We’ve worked with interior designers from the hospitality industry for example, to ensure luxurious, personalised surroundings that couldn’t be further from the stereotypical clinical setting you get with many practices. And this theme will continue into the fourth premises when work gets underway. We’ve become as renowned for the customer experience as we have for the services we provide. This commitment to quality must therefore be maintained however large we grow.” A four-month renovation project will now take place to turn a two-storey terrace building into the new implant suite. The existing 2900sqft space will then become The Courtyard’s flagship clinical academy. “Whether a patient has been coming to us for a decade, has just become a member, or has been newly-referred from another practice for a more complex treatment, we want to show them just how sophisticated modern dentistry can be,” concludes Marcus. “This expansion, and the creation of customer-focused space, is as crucial to that as the skill-sets of our dental experts.” The Courtyard is so-called because the dentistry’s soon-to-be four converted premises surround a cobbled square, tucked away off King Street in Huddersfield town centre. The new building will open in June.

Growing commercial team Huddersfield Town have made two new appointments to their commercial team. Marc Mitchell (above right) is the Club’s new Commercial Manager of Advertising and Events, whilst Jon MacDonald joins as Partnerships Executive. Marc, 30, has joined the Terriers from Premier League Manchester City, where he had worked for over three years; most recently as Business Development Manager. Marc will be responsible for attracting new business to the fold through exciting advertising opportunities, as well as looking after existing clients. The Club’s portfolio of advertising opportunities, including perimeter

boards, the John Smith’s Stadium Big Screen, HTTV advertising and the facilities at PPG Canalside, will all fall under Marc’s remit. Marc will also oversee and manage the Events Department. Before moving into the football industry, he worked for Swinton Insurance and Direct Line Insurance. Jon, 32, will play a key role in the implementation, development and growth of Huddersfield Town’s business partnerships new and old, assisting in forming strategic partnerships with companies. A University of Huddersfield graduate and lifelong Huddersfield Town fan, Jon joins the Club from Halifax Bank.

New floodlights for junior school A West Yorkshire junior school has raised over £1,000 to purchase floodlights to continue its outdoor clubs, sports fixtures and after school care facilities during the winter months. Hipperholme Grammar Junior School, in Halifax, has purchased the floodlights with funds raised by its Parent Teacher Association (PTA) through a series of events including themed discos, drive in movie nights and jumble sales. with like-minded companies. Hepworth Motor Group and Develop UK have recently done business together, whilst Ever Group and AMP – all members of the ‘Huddersfield Hundred’ – now work in partnership; just two examples of the success of Town’s initiative. Sean Jarvis, Huddersfield Town’s Commercial Director, commented: “Huddersfield Town is incredibly proud to a reach the aim of having 100 Club Partners. “These businesses have supported the Club in their own way, some for several years, and we are delighted to be working them all. “The support they have given has quickly become part of the fabric

of this Football Club and I’d like to thank everyone of our partners for developing great relationships with us. “Huddersfield Town plays an important role in its local community, both for fans and businesses, and it’s fantastic to see the companies all working together in a mutually beneficial way.” Although the ‘Huddersfield Hundred’ is now complete, there are still many ways that businesses can get involved with the Club.

The floodlights will enable teachers and pupils to continue working outdoors on winter evenings. The portable lights can also be moved and set up as required for different lessons or events. Head teacher, Sarah Weller, commented: “These portable floodlights are a valuable resource that will help us to extend our outdoor learning programme and enable us to continue outdoor clubs, sports fixtures and wraparound care facilities on dark evenings.” The school’s American Tag Rugby Club and Under 9 rugby team were among the first to put the lights to the test at their launch this month, alongside members of the PTA who attended the lights first showcase and celebrated with refreshments. Mrs Weller added: “The school places an emphasis on enriching classroom-based learning with handson exploration in the school grounds and ventures into the wider world. “Thanks to the generosity of our PTA, the floodlights now provide a valuable resource that will enable us to continue this not just throughout winter, but for years to come.”

Yorkshire businesses get behind fundraising campaign

As preparations for the charity football initiative ‘The Match 2017’ continue to gain momentum, the latest supporters to get on board are Huddersfieldbased businesses Magic Rock Brewing and Lindley Financial Management. The inaugural event, which takes place on Saturday 20th May at The MBI Shay Stadium in Halifax, will bring together footballing amateurs and Huddersfield Town legends, in a game that will help to raise much needed funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Both firms have each donated £500 in return for becoming an official shirt sponsor. With a running cost of £12,000 per day for the two yellow helicopters to

remain active, the organisation relies entirely on donations to continue saving lives. Magic Rock Brewing was founded by brothers Richard and Jonny Burhouse and inspired by brewing traditions and the US craft beer scene in particular. The awardwinning company produces an innovative range of idiosyncratic beers in their 4,000sqft Tap Room, close to the town centre. When approached to get behind The Match, Richard says there was never any doubt about getting involved: “We are a community focused business, keen to support local initiatives wherever possible. We are aware of the excellent work the air ambulance does for the region, and wanted to do our bit.” Regular charity supporters Lindley Financial Management also had no qualms about signing up to help the event. The independent financial advisers, based in Brighouse, also support Pilgrim Bandits Charity, aiding soldier amputees injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Commenting on The Match,

director Mark Learmont, said: “I hope as many people as possible attend. Nobody knows when they may need the help of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance – supporting them is vital and their services must be applauded.” Organiser, and founder of grassroots football specialists Coaches Club, Dave Learmont, adds: “I am thankful that two local businesses have gone the extra mile to raise awareness and proceeds for this fantastic charity.” But the search for sponsors isn’t over, with the players themselves now looking for individual support. For only

£150, companies will secure their name and details on the official match website, alongside their logo on the programme. The players and Town legends are also appealing for members of the public to get on board and buytickets. Available at £10 for adults and £5 for children, the aim is to provide a fun, low cost day out for all the family. Pre-match and half-time entertainment – as well as a couple of extra special guests – will be revealed over the coming weeks. All tickets must be purchased before the game, via justgiving. com/teams/coaches-club.

Systems consultancy makes senior appointment A West Yorkshire business systems consultancy has made a senior appointment as the company prepares for three-fold growth.

Business launches its own Charity A family run Cleckheaton based HR, Employment Law and Health & Safety Company has successfully launched its own charity with the aim and purpose of helping homeless people living rough on the street back into work. The Howarth Foundation received charitable status with the specific objectives of: “The prevention or relief of poverty in respect of individuals who are, or who have recently been, homeless in the districts of Leeds and Kirklees, by actively sourcing employers willing to offer employment and by providing those individuals with support and guidance, as to be determined by the Trustees, to successfully obtain such employment.” Local business man and Founder of the Foundation, Andy Howarth has been involved in various fund-raising initiatives for local charities and good causes for many years, but has always harboured a desire to put his energies into a slightly more difficult and sometimes controversial cause of the homeless. Andy said, “We've raised a not insignificant amount of money for local charities and whilst all are good causes, I felt that helping the homeless was not only a good cause but frankly a needier one.

and the cash we raised was a drop in the ocean, but would make a significant difference to those sleeping rough. “The Howarth Foundation has already secured the support of many local businesses who have offered to provide work for suitable candidates. Many local businesses are keen to support grass roots local charities and economically it makes no sense for fit able bodied or otherwise individuals to be sleeping rough with no work to go to and no prospect of a decent future when there are clearly opportunities out there for them.” The Howarth Foundation intends to raise funds by staging events such as the already popular Music Extravaganza that has been a favourite for the past three years, and this year will be held at the Cedar Court, Ainley Top Huddersfield in November.

Huddersfield-based All My Systems has recruited experienced business analyst Rob Nightingale. Responsible for devising and configuring process-led technologies for the company’s expanding client base, he will increase capacity in the team as the firm prepares for a significant hike in turnover. The hunt is now on for a sixth team member – a second business analyst – to support this next chapter of development, as well as an apprentice. A second office at The Craggs Country Business Park in Calderdale has also been secured, meaning All My Systems now has a rural base to complement the town centre HQ at the 3M BIC in Huddersfield. The young micro-company has had an exciting three years since it was established in the spring of 2014. The brainchild of IT expert Mark Pullar, it has grown to become a respected information systems consultancy which offers the Microsoft technology and expertise to optimise data and processes that fuel business growth. Commenting on the company’s growth, founder and managing director Mark said: “It’s been a whirlwind time for us, but it feels quite significant that, as we mark three years in business, we’re also projecting three times greater turnover for the next financial year.”

ANY BUSINESS WANTING TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS EVENT, EITHER AS A SPONSOR OR JUST TO TREAT THEIR STAFF TO A GREAT NIGHT OUT, SHOULD

“Some of the charities that we have supported in the past are very well patronised by big corporates such as banks,

Sponsor search for Festival The organisers of one of the UK’s longest established jazz festivals are searching for sponsors to help fund this year’s event. Marsden Jazz Festival celebrated its 25th year in 2016 and is hoping the live music weekend can keep going strong for another 25 years with the support of the region’s businesses.

Invest for tomorrow, run for today A Halifax-based independent financial advisor has become a partner of Run Huddersfield, a local running festival involving a marathon, half marathon and family fun run. Investing For Tomorrow LLP is a Chartered financial advice company helping clients to plan for a brighter future. They are keen to invest in the local community and in keeping with the firm’s mission to ‘live for today’, proactively sponsors ways to keep people fit, healthy and able to enjoy a positive future. Run Huddersfield will take place on 4th June 2017, with picturesque routes including Scammonden Dam and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. As a partner of the festival, race numbers of both the marathon and half marathon runners will carry the Investing For Tomorrow branding. Explaining his company’s decision to support the event, Laurence Turner said: “Marathons are all about a personal journey, and running and training for one is a major life goal for many people. Investing For Tomorrow enables people to explore their passions and goals in life, helping them build the financial security

to enjoy those rich life experiences and live life on their own terms. For some people, their goal might be to run a marathon, for others it might be to own a retirement cottage in Cumbria. “Independent financial advice can show you how to make this happen. Everyone running the Huddersfield Marathon is living their life for today – and that’s something that Investing for Tomorrow solidly supports.” On behalf of Run Huddersfield organisers, Team OA Ltd, Wane Law stated: “We are delighted to welcome Investing For Tomorrow as a partner for the Run Huddersfield festival. Their financial support has enabled us to commission various actions in our efforts to build an event for the area to be proud of. In addition, we look forward to our shared marketing initiatives raising awareness for both Run Huddersfield and Investing For Tomorrow. We hope this will result in even more runners and spectators getting involved in the day.”

Funding is needed to support over 70 free gigs, the festival’s renowned Saturday street parade, over 20 youth and community performances, free children’s workshops and a free jazz bus. Marsden’s 25th festival saw over 140 hours of live music and over 11,000 gig attendances during the festival weekend last October, with more than 60 volunteers giving up their time to help make the weekend a success. Barney Stevenson, Artistic Director at the festival, said: “One in four of the people who visit say they only ever get to see live jazz music at our festival, so it’s really important to us that the majority of our gigs are free. “We are proud to showcase a wide range of jazz musicians from internationallyacclaimed artists to local school bands and rising talent. And the Saturday street parade is always the talking point of the weekend, with three of the UK’s leading street bands and a moving scrap metal sculpture among the highlights of the 2016 parade. “We rely on donations to help fund the festival, so we’re really keen for anyone interested in supporting us to get in touch.”

TopicUK joins forces with Brand Yorkshire

Yorkshire manufacturing opens door to growth for Deuren A West Yorkshire luxury door manufacturer looks set to double in size over the next 12 months, following an overhaul of the business model only two and a half years ago. Mirfield-based Deuren is no stranger to the interiors market, having supplied fine Italian doors to domestic and commercial customers for the past 20 years. But in 2014, founder Ian Chubb overhauled the company and brought everything in-house, transforming the business from a small import operation, to an 18-strong UK craftsmanship brand. Deuren relocated to a 10,000sqft premises at the converted Wheatley Park mill late last year to help pave the way for further growth. The purchase of a £160,000 CNC machine further increased the technological capabilities of the workshop, taking the machinery investment total to £270,000 in the past two years alone. But the spend will not stop there. Ian already has his sights set on a new veneer press, and there are plans to procure another CNC machine by the end of the year. It is hoped that more people will be coming on board too, with Deuren having

14

begun the hunt for at least three more joiners over the next few months. Commenting on what has been a whirlwind time for the business, Ian said: “When the recession hit, the quality of products we were importing became harder to control, and it was particularly difficult to get hold of fire doors. We were also finding that customers’ requirements were becoming increasingly bespoke, but we couldn’t offer the design and sizing flexibility that the UK new-build and renovation market sought. “So, we bit the bullet and brought the manufacturing in-house, taking us from a small team of salesmen to a company employing our own craftsmen, installation engineers and project administrators. ‘Shutting the door’ on the import market was the best thing we ever did. We’ve boosted our turnover by 81% in that time, and with a strong forward order book, project that revenue will double again within the next 12 months.”

The eighth Brand Yorkshire Conference returns on the 5th of October 2017 at the Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate. Organisers are really pleased and honoured to announce that the new media partners for the 2017 conference will be TopicUK. Over the last few years WCEC has enjoyed substantial growth and diversification, with new sectors established and work/offices in different geographical regions. Last year, as part of

an ongoing assessment of the strategic positioning and future direction of the company, the practice decided it was time to refresh their image to better reflect the company they have become. The change to a new and simpler name is being accompanied by a distinctive rebrand which includes a new website and entire new suite of stationery/ marketing material. Ashley Turner, Chief Executive at Whittam Cox Architects said: “This is an exciting time for us. We wanted a fresh brand that represented our heritage, our people and our approach. “The name comes from our founders, Jeff

Whittam and Derek Cox and, for us, it puts the people back at the centre of our practice. “Our new look also complements the work we do – balancing technical precision with commercial reality to make places we can all be proud of.” Nick Riley, Board Director, added: “Our objective was to create a brand which related to us specifically, and our profession. We wanted to highlight what we sell to our clients; our skills, knowledge, experience and personality.” The company trading status is completely unaffected by the change, with the WCEC Group Ltd continuing to be the legal and financial title. The business has always had its roots in the Sheffield City Region, but growth over the last few years has seen the opening of offices in London and Leeds, employing a total of 140 staff.

Social Technology), added: “These 30 organisations are part of a very exciting trend that is only going to grow.”

“We’re so pleased to award the Best of Houzz 2017 to this incredible group of talented and customer-focused professionals, including Fibre Architects,” said Andrew Small, Managing Director of Houzz UK and Ireland.

The listing highlights businesses that have “philanthropy laced throughout” rather than those that have introduced CSR as a box ticking exercise.

One of Fibre’s satisfied clients who has reviewed the firm on their site, David Partridge. said of Fibre: “They have been attentive to our brief and have understood our vision for the project whilst using their skill and flair to create a truly exciting design.”

All 30 businesses are recognised for going to exceptional lengths to make a difference despite not having corporate-sized budgets.

Gareth Henderson, managing director of Orchard Facilities Management, said: “Everything we do to support charities and community groups is aimed at making a lasting and positive impact on the organisations we team up with, and to have that work recognised on a national level is incredible.

“We have an exciting year ahead, with some big projects being built, so winning this award is the perfect start to 2017.”

“We have no prior experience of commissioning significant projects and they have supported us at every step, explaining what is required and suggesting professionals, who have all been efficient and of high calibre.”

Grant Cornwell, chief executive of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, was one of the judges of the Philanthropic 30. He told award organiser Real Business magazine that he had been impressed by the innovative approaches to supporting good causes. “It was also brilliant to see that so many of the companies who entered now see CSR as a core part of their business, and that they are encouraging their staff to be more actively involved in supporting community projects to help improve the lives of people both locally and on an international basis,” he said. “Our business plan clearly states that by achieving our growth objectives we will be able to increase our charitable giving as a consequence. “We operate a grant-making charity established to support and assist individuals and families in crisis by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other social or economic disadvantage and we give a minimum of 12 per cent of our profits to good causes every year,” he added.

Fantastic Media Launches New Blue Apple Training Website Leeds based training and recruitment company, Blue Apple Training, have selected Fantastic Media as it's marketing partner in a business rebrand, complete with web site redesign. Fantastic Media has worked with the team at Blue Apple Training to refine their brand, clarify their product offering and futureproof the business. Following on from an initial 'Insight Workshop', the team at Fantastic got to know the business and understand how it had grown rapidly and in recent years. To futureproof the business and create a sense of ‘bigness’ in the training and recruitment industry, the team decided that a modernisation of the brand was the best fit. The team has helped by refreshing the existing logo, redesigning the website with a clear user journey in mind and assisting in the production of the learning materials and redesign of the office collateral in line with the new brand refresh. Blue Apple Training is a Yorkshire

based company that primarily specialises in training within the welfare to work sector, with learning hubs in both Leeds and Huddersfield. The company also helps to recruit learners into suitable programmes of study, with the intention to get individuals back into the working environment with all the required skills to succeed. Mike Gore, operations director and co-founder of Blue Apple Training said: “We’re very happy with the rebrand and the new website. It is easy to find information on all the services that we offer, and is easy to update with new news stories and online courses. Fantastic Media took the time to get to know our company, and the attention to detail has clearly shown in all the work they have produced for us.”

For the past 34 years, Gillian has specialised in wills, probate, estate administration, trusts, inheritance tax planning, powers of attorney and Court of Protection work. Speaking of her long career, Gillian said that it had been a privilege to serve the people of Calderdale and beyond. “I have been lucky to work for two highly respected legal practices,” she said. Director of Wilkinson Woodward Maureen Cawthorn added, “Gillian has devoted over three decades to serving the communities of Calderdale. Over a long and successful career, she has developed many longstanding professional relationships with clients and colleagues and she will be missed by many. We wish her a long and happy retirement.” Gillian, 58, who lives Sowerby Bridge, plans to divide her newly-found free time between voluntary work and “a new career as a professional potterer”.

One of the roles of Upper Calder Valley Renaissance (UCVR) is to support and encourage the growth and sustainability of business networks in the Calder Valley. In most cases the enthusiasm and commitment of local business leaders make this task easy. As we work along the Valley in our series of news items on the Business Networks, we’ve now reached Mytholmroyd, one such passionate business group. The Mytholmroyd Business Network Group (MBNG) was founded by Sue Slater, Steph Harrison and Tim Walton, in 2015. It soon became a feature of village life, holding a

The timing of the establishment of the MBNG was critical to the support needed for the many businesses that were so badly flooded in December 2015. Despite the personal trauma of having their own businesses severely flooded with months of recovery and uncertainty, Sue and her team worked tirelessly to support and help

other businesses devastated at the time. The leaders of this group played a significant part in helping to establish the UCVR business flood recovery office in nearby Hebden Bridge and conduct an initial survey and report on immediate post flood business needs. Whilst all the potential meeting rooms in the Mytholmroyd centre were out of action for almost 12 months the MBNG, with the co-operation of the local school and its library space, continued to meet and keep up the momentum of membership growth. “Resilience” is a word that you hear a lot of in these parts and the MBNG have taken it to a different level.

Realising the benefits of ultra-fast connectivity With a growing number of start-ups, a modern university and a thriving SME community, Huddersfield is the 11th largest town in the UK and houses a diverse mix of industries in its region. The town is also ideally situated between Leeds and Manchester, two of the largest business economies in the North, giving Huddersfield-based businesses easy access without the high rental price. As companies now rely on internet connectivity more than ever before, the importance of being connected to an ultra-fast, reliable network is becoming increasingly apparent. CityFibre’s pure-fibre network is revolutionising the way companies do business, ensuring data connectivity and communication needs are met for years to come. The network is a key component in improving the overall infrastructure of Huddersfield and further enhancing its economy.

using high definition buffer free video conferencing. In addition to increasing office productivity and efficiency, CityFibre’s infrastructure opens up an array of opportunities for remote data storage. Huge files can be saved online using cloud based services, such as Dropbox, avoiding data and access limitations associated with storing large files on an office network.

With gigabit speeds up to 100x faster than the UK average, staff can simultaneously access a gigabit network at peak times, with no drop in speeds. This means that it’s possible for everyone to do whatever they need online at the same time, with no waiting around for pages to load or content to buffer.

Ultra-fast internet can help improve data storage security as files can be automatically backed up meaning they are unable to be misplaced or damaged, hugely reducing the potential for data loss. In the unlikely event of a fault, cloud data recovery is around four times faster than the same process in traditional computing and the failure can easily be traced back to the source.

Businesses utilising the network can now download multiple files and send high resolution design work in an instant as well as saving time travelling by

The Gigabit Huddersfield network also provides services to 176 Kirklees council sites, bolstering public sector services in the local community.

These include government offices, schools, youth centres and council departments. Realising the importance of an ultrafast, reliable network, Jacqui Gedman, Director of Economy, Skills & the Environment at Kirklees Council said “Not only are the council taking advantage of a network that will help improve the provision of council services, but businesses are able to access all the benefits of gigabit speed internet. The connectivity offers our businesses an opportunity to transform the way they operate.” This state-of-the-art infrastructure allows business-critical services to run smoothly, offering a truly diverse connectivity solution, completely independent from incumbent infrastructures. CityFibre’s business class SLAs mean that if you do happen to encounter any issues, they will be resolved quickly and efficiently. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Water polo success for school

Pupils from Hipperholme Grammar Junior School have enjoyed success representing the region as part of a national water polo competition. A team of ten year 4 pupils, aged between eight and nine, recently won the Independent Schools Association (ISA) North water polo tournament, held at the Middleton Arena in Manchester. Pupils Evie Shaw, Charlotte Shaw, Lakshya Kaushik, Jayesh Bharath, Charlie Price, James Thirkell, Jude Fawthrop, Henry Collett, Joel Dent and William Whatley, led the team to a 6 – 3 win against pupils from Greenbank School, Cheadle Hulme, in the final. During the match, the school took an early five goal lead, holding it to half way through the third quarter, by the end of which Greenback School had scored three goals. Commenting on the match, PE coordinator Gregg Winfield-Jowitt said: “Instead of panicking, the boys and girls made good use of the pit position and we employed our strongest swimmers to cover the spine of the pool. This resulted in the final goal coming from the Hipperholme team and allowed us to bring the ISA North West trophy back to the school.” Headteacher, Sarah Weller, added: “We’re committed to nurturing every student’s unique individuality and promoting self-esteem, and extracurricular activities such as these are a great way of ensuring that we do just that. I’m extremely proud of the hard work and effort that our pupils put in to take home this fantastic trophy.”

Other event sponsors include Jewson, Ozone Cooling, Jane Stocks Estate Agents, GP Metal, Clifford Decoration and Design, KB Mortgage Services, Towergate Insurance, Movin Lettings, Timber Specialists, Honeycombe Kitchens, Waxmans, NIS and Peel One.

Commenting on why they chose to support the two charities, Stephen Byram, SB Homes’ founder and managing director said: “We’re a local house builder and our core values are all about supporting local people — so we had to choose causes that were integral to the Huddersfield community.

“The club promotes health and fitness, discipline, commitment and dedication, positive behavior and of course enjoyment and friendship through sport. “Having the club as partners means we can offer our students top class boxing training on their doorstep. We are proud to support the club and delighted that the fundraiser was a huge success.”

“What these charities do is invaluable to our town — most people who live here know someone that has been supported by one of them. So, we wanted to give something back.” More than 200 people will be served a threecourse dinner, followed by live music, casino tables and entertainment from a magician, an auction and a DJ.

SB Homes is encouraging other local people to support the event, from buying tickets, to offering auction prizes. Plus, there are five table sponsorship opportunities left, from £100 each.

Award for medical company A Yorkshire medical device company has won an award in recognition of its collaboration with academic institutions at the prestigious Medilink Yorkshire & Humber Healthcare Business Awards.

I

nnovate Orthopaedics won the ‘Partnership with Academia’ award in recognition of academic partnerships that led to the launch of its first product, which is now being used by surgeons across the UK. Set up by Alex Gutteridge and Hannah Longbottom in 2015, Innovate Orthopaedics is an independent medical device company based in the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Huddersfield, that challenges the current market status quo. The company partners directly with world-leading surgeons to design and manufacture products to address current issues in orthopaedic sports surgery. Innovate Orthopaedics is a prime example of successful collaboration between business and academia. Through partnership with academic establishments such as Sheffield University and Imperial College, the young business has been able to successfully launch its first product, a patented, CEmarked screw specifically designed for use in reconstructing ligaments in the knee. The screw is currently supplied to a growing number of private and NHS hospitals throughout the UK. During the initial design of the screw,

24

Innovate Orthopaedics and the Medical AMRC in Sheffield worked together on concept evaluation through to prototype generation. The Medical AMRC also introduced the company to their manufacturing partner, Sheffield Precision Medical. Innovate Orthopaedics then worked with Imperial College, London, to biomechanically test the screw. Many UK orthopaedic surgeons were involved in this testing and have contributed to a scientific paper, which has been accepted by the British Knee Society and was presented at their annual meeting in March. The paper has also been submitted to a major European knee journal for publication. Managing director of Innovate Orthopaedics, Alex Gutteridge, said: “Working in collaboration with academia is crucial when bringing a product to market. It is an area that can be undervalued by industry so we are really pleased it has been recognised in a specific award. We see it as part of being a responsible business. It is also a privilege and something we enjoy doing. “Winning this award helps to endorse

what we set out to achieve, which is to work openly and honestly with all our partners which includes academics, clinicians, industry and our customers.” Other nominees in the Partnership with Academia Award included The Sheffield College and HMA. Kevin Kiely, Chief Executive of Medilink Yorkshire and Humber, said: “Health Technology across Yorkshire and Humber plays a major role in the region’s economic growth, and perhaps unique to our sector, in transforming healthcare delivery and improving the health and well-being of our citizens. “I would like to congratulate all of our winners and shortlisted nominees for the remarkable things they have achieved over the last year.” Next steps for Innovate Orthopaedics are to build on the success of their first product which will involve expanding the customer base both in the UK and overseas. They are looking to export to New Zealand in the near future. Other products are also in the pipeline as well as a student internship and knowledge transfer partnership opportunities.

Brand specialist scoops ultimate design accolade Huddersfield based, The Engine Room, scooped a gold design impact trophy at the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London and the team were delighted to be crowned the overall winner of winners on the night, picking up the prestigious Grand Prix award.

T

he achievements celebrated the measurable impact that The Engine Room’s work had on a collaborative project with UK construction materials manufacturer Polyseam, also based in Huddersfield.

The two companies worked together to propel Polyseam’s GRAFT brand of sealants, to help drive business growth and combat market difficulties. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by 744%, and export levels have risen by more than £1million. This transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building an 82,000sqft factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. The bottom line impact impressed the line-up of high-profile awards judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden. Commenting on the win, The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver said: “The awards celebrate what’s possible when the best brains from design and business come together in true partnership. It’s very fitting that both companies involved in the winning

26

projects therefore walk away with gongs on the night. “We knew before we attended the ceremony at The Brewery in London, that we would walk away with some recognition for our submission for the ‘Construction & Materials’ category. "However, we didn’t know if the award would be bronze, silver or gold. We were absolutely delighted with the gold trophy, with one presented to both myself and Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina almost at the start of the night. So we had begun our celebrations, and honestly couldn’t believe what we were

hearing when our project was announced as the Grand Prix winner.” 45 design awards were presented at the event, with 12 going to agencies in Yorkshire. Lesley concluded: “We were also incredibly proud to look around the room and see the overwhelming level of talent from Yorkshire. We often read about the emerging profile of the Northern Powerhouse, but for so much award-winning work to be coming from our region alone is especially impressive.”

Start-up Yorkshire Film Makers enter first Feature Film to The Cannes Film Festival Visualize Films, a start-up television and film production company from Huddersfield, have teamed up with multi award winning playwrite John Godber to turn one of his stage plays into a feature film. John Danbury and Daniel Coll launched Visualize films just a year ago and have already produced a 10 part television series set in and around Ireland which stars former Coronation Street actor, Charlie Lawson. John said “It has been an insane year, Danny and I went to a TV forum in Cannes and we picked up a commission to make our first program, as soon as that went into edit we went into pre-production of the feature film.” Daniel is no stranger to film having picked up a best director award for his “Tragedy of Macbeth” in LA a few years ago and has been in discussion with John Godber for some time before the launch of the company with regard to making this film.

Walker to enable us to do it.” Danbury continued: “One of the things that has amazed us is the support from people in the industry who have joined us on this project and given time and resources, mainly for nothing. We had 15 crew, 50 actors, 150 extras, 22 locations and just 24 days to film the whole thing so wouldn’t have been able to do that without the dedication and hard work of everyone concerned” John Godber is a name that is synonymous with the East riding of Yorkshire after the playwrite spent over 20 years creating one of the most well respected regional theatres in the country, Hull Truck. He has written much for TV with hundreds of episodes of well-known programmes under his belt including Brookside and Grange Hill. He also wrote and directed the film adaptation of his award winning play “Up n Under” as well as winning two BAFTAs for his TV Film “The Odd Squad”. The film “Last Laugh” is set in Hull and Whitby and follows the life of Martin Dawson, played by native Yorkshire Actor and national theatre star, Nick Figgis,

who is on the brink of a career and life breakdown. We see natural comedy derived from the everyday situations he is in as he spends an ill-fated weekend away with his parents played by real life husband and wife John Godber and Jane Thornton. The story is, at its core, about family and love and also features 80’s pop music icon Toyah Willcox in a supporting role. “Last Laugh” was shot on location all over Yorkshire but mainly in and around Hull and Whitby with some days hidden in a secret location in the North Yorkshire Moors. The entrepreneurial pair now plan a three film deal with Godber to bring some of his best known work to the screen, as well as a documentary based on the playwright himself and a second and third series of the TV travel show and are currently seeking investment.

“We have had our trials and tribulations over the first year like any start up business and have basically run the first year on nothing, no outside investment in the company and working full time on no income is not a good thing for your sanity, but we have a focus and the projects at least gathered small investment to enable them to be made, even if we are yet to be paid.” said Daniel. Daniel said “John Godber and I had tried unsuccessfully to get funding for the project two years ago. Then JD and I started Visualize Films and have been lucky to gain the financial backing from a distributor and a couple of local businesses including Wakefield based, Sir Rodney

Entrepreneur Nicky Pattinson, who will be speaking at the L4N Conference in June, talks to TopicUK. At the Balance conference in June I’m going to speak about balance in communication. As in – the ‘’balance of the words that get you what you want in life’’ – advanced communication for professional people meeters – and in reality – that's most of us! If you run a business, work in any kind of sales – or rely on meeting new people in anyway – then you’ll know that the way you express who you are and what you do, engaging people in a compelling way - is the difference between superstardom and well, dying in front of your particular audience.

28

To be clear - I don’t mean ‘’give it some hammer with the positive self talk’’ – I mean the way we actually create a reaction from others – rather than sending another email to someone we’d like to – or already do business with that doesn’t hit the consciousness – but crushingly does hit very directly and instantly the trash icon. To know this stuff really is a crucial point, when utilised my ‘’market stall conversation formula’’ has trebled sales and a lot more for the countries top retailers and on the on the road cold appointment making businesses.

It sure isn’t our fault, there are so many factors that have us retreat into the ‘ safety, anonymity and invisibilty of trance like business communication’’ – speaking the same words as everyone else. Like a thousand walls, all painted in a life sucking shade of magnolia. Hoping not to ‘rock the boat’ and get a ‘negative reaction.’ Ending up with no reaction. How many shoppers reply to ‘Are you ok there, can I help you’ with anything other than ‘No thanks.’ How many of us excitedly banter with the sender of an email that begins… ‘Hi I hope you are well?’ Signed off ‘Kind Regards.’

We created a ‘way of being’ – a way of taking the single parents and low income families of Maggie Thatchers ‘excess Britain’ to feelings of great connection, belonging and validation. It was how we expressed and sold ourselves that created the queues – not how much chocolate surrounded the club biscuits or how yellow the marzipan was on the battenburg .

Business doesn’t drop into our cupped hands like water from a tap the way it used to and we must balance our compulsion to conform with a style of communication that actually represents the most powerful thing you will ever have control over. YOURSELF. Honest And create real meaningful business friendships that have people choosing you on connection not price. My gift (yes I believe we all have a gift and this is mine!) originated from an unexpected source to be honest.

We’d found the ‘words formula’ that created £27k short of £1,000,000 in new business. 20 YEARS AGO. Professional

However - every sustained success story has a massive, dramatic and sad dip at some point. The days of the biscuit counter dream were about to go horrifically wrong. Sentiment

Reaction, connection and being related to, is everything in our saturated world, where to be good is a given and it’s he or she who gets into dialogue and relationship with the customer in the first place, who’s the winner of the golden pot.

machine (no email then) that confirmed a £220,000 sale. That news changed everything for the designers, for Julian and Trudi – for Lancashire dairies that sent the fax…but most of all. For me.

In just over 2 years – my first son Jackson had tragically died at nursery, my parents had both died – and my husband? Lets just say the money was gone. And I was the best bet for the creditors getting paid back. Many of you will know – there’s not a lot of sentiment when it comes to finances. I lost our home, both parents, most of my inheritance, and the worst thing of all. Possibly my dignity. But, I still had what I learned on the markets. The advanced use of words and intention and a young boy, my second son Dhani to bring up alone. I hid from both myself and the world for two years, trying to work out how this could have happened – I was nearly 40, and being a penniless single parent was not in Nickys grand plan I can tell ya! New Business

My ex husband and myself created a just shy of £2,000,000 business from very little, using only the right words to create intense connection on a market stall, selling short date cakes and biscuits. We compelled customers to buy from us and not the other 3 or 4 cake and biscuit sellers in every town we operated in.

A few of you will have heard this story, but I’m telling it again anyway. Some people you never forget because they saved you. And it was Julian Kynaston of Propaganda the agency and his then wife Trudi who saved me. I met them at a party – (no such thing as a chance)and they set me on doing cold calls to create new business meetings for their business.

We were 10% more expensive than anyone else – and 100% busier. At least.

I still get emotional when I tell you that in just six weeks – we took a fax off the

I then went to a global agency – The Attic. The same ‘mode of expression’ created new business meetings with senior people in Nike, Adidas, Rolls Royce, Porsche cars, Deageo – HSBC government agencies, DEISEL in Italy. Swarovski in Switzerland. Another million a year – there or there abouts.

AND THAT is the problem most have. Getting noticed, getting a real professional friendship in the first place. When buyers and customers literally have hundreds of approaches a week. Relationships Be careful today how you tell the world who you are – because it really is the deciding factor as to whether tomorrow is full of opportunity and excitement – or grey and full of ‘’the angst of invisibility.’’

And lets not forget – there's nothing new here, as we have become the words we use and the resulting relationships they create from the second society was formed.

And even in the digital age - to compel people with words will always be the alchemy that gets you what you wanted, what you saw when you created the business plan or took the job in the first place.

Ladies, Nicky will be speaking at the L4N conference at The Moorlands Inn, Halifax on 23rd June. To reserve a place visit www.l4nuk.com.

THUNDER &LIGHTNING FILMS

We are Thunder and Lightning Films. We do one thing and we do it well – the moving image. Whether it is filmed or animated, we make video content electrifying. We work as a Video Production Company for Communications, Marketing and Advertising Agencies as well as directly for clients with communications and marketing teams. Our team is led by Creative Director Paul Morricone who brings to bear over twenty years of industry experience in commercial video production to every project. We can fit anywhere in the production process – often working with agencies leading the concept and design of a commercial or alongside existing in-house teams looking to augment their video offer. We also work directly with businesses looking for the full creative production. Why do we do what we do? We absolutely love the moving image. In fact, we have a passion for it. Big or small screen and wherever your viewers watch, it is an irresistible opportunity to fill a space with colourful pictures and words, to make a statement and say something. We have the knowledge and expertise to

30

shoot what we want in any way we want to. We have an enormously flexible space to build sets, stage interviews and pieces to camera and control light and sound in all manner of striking ways. This is like having a playground all to yourself for a creative team such as ours. We even hung someone upside down and poured dayglo paint down them recently for a music video – all in the name of rock and roll.

As well as the move to new premises, our team has expanded to offer everything from advanced post-production to specialised camera work such as steadycam and drone operation in house. Regardless of the type of production there is always two things to consider - What are you saying and who are you saying it to. We believe there is no point in making a video that nobody wants to watch. That’s why we always think from the viewer’s point of view and ask ourselves “what would I like to see?” We want to make things interesting. Very interesting. We are Thunder and Lightning. CommercialProperty Hanson Chartered Surveyors was established in October 1989, by Mark Hanson BSc FRICS to service the needs of clients expecting direct and uncomplicated advice.

Are we to play by the rules? Invoking the Great Repeal Bill (the word “Great” will never appear in the eventual Act) should be simple enough and easily doable in the allotted time. Deciding what will be debunct thereafter may take a generation in that it has taken a generation to get to this point. Having said that; will it? Many of the EU standards and regulations were based upon UK standards laid down before anyone in Brussels had an inkling of them. By accepting all of the existing regulations, without amendment, the UK Parliament can take its time deciding what is in the best interests of the UK sifting through and getting rid of those annoying elements. I am, though, concerned that the quality of the Brexit negotiators may be wanting. We have no experience of serious trade negotiations and our negotiators must tread a careful and wiley route if we are not to be out manoeuvred. All the superficial talk of “mutual interest” and “what’s good for us will be good for them” is naïve if taken seriously. Back in the day when my father was in textiles, he was, for a time, Chairman of

http://www.thunderandlightning.co.uk/

the Blanket Manufacturers Federation, by then a small group of companies in Yorkshire and Oxford. The Government announced a requirement for a quantity of blankets for the Armed Forces. It was of a size that meant, under the rules, it

must be available to the European manufacturers too. My father took a deputation to see the Minister and was seen by a Junior Minister and a Civil Servant to explain how important such an order was to the UK Industry but were told that nothing could be done. The rules were clear. UK industry bid for the contract but it was lost. A year or so later the French Armed Forces had a requirement for blankets. Curiously, the size of the order was just below the threshold necessary to go to the European (and UK) competition. They had similar orders for the two following years too. I don’t blame the French; good luck to them. They know how to look after their own interest. I do blame the UK Civil Servants (not the Minister, who probably did not have a clue anyway) who were more concerned about the rules than what could be done to mitigate their effect. He felt very let down at the time when, as a manufacturer employing over 1,000 people in a struggling industry, he was greeted by the be-suited Civil Servant with a gold plated pension who had little understanding and even less appreciation of how to create wealth. I remember reflecting at the time (it was over 35 years ago) that the UK were the only country to play cricket within this group of European nations and I wondered whether that Civil Servant was an aspiring vice captain of his local village second team. We will need the very best to represent us and they will have to be at the top of their game, which is just not cricket.

Luxury door manufacturer enrols help of students Bespoke door manufacturer Deuren has enrolled the help of three design students to develop its next cutting-edge craftsmanship Three creative young minds from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) were chosen as the winners of a competition set by Deuren’s founder and managing director Ian Chubb. And now the stand-out work will be put into production at Deuren’s West Yorkshire workshop. Ian set the same design parameters he would give to anyone who approaches Deuren with an enquiry – no limits. He was looking for something eye-catching and truly unique for an internal door set.

Accountancy firm celebrates Huddersfield accountancy firm Crowther has reached a milestone anniversary of 21 years in business. The significant birthday has coincided with a move to larger offices at Bradley Business Park, Huddersfield, to accommodate its burgeoning workforce. Crowther’s team has significantly grown over the past few years to accommodate new clients and an increased service offering. Steve Crowther, founder and managing director, said: “It’s incredible how quickly the past 21 years has gone.

32

A lot has happened since we first set-up, we’ve grown to a team of 19, we’ve seen start-up businesses grow to become global brands and as accountants our role has changed quite considerably. In the 21 years in business, what really makes me proud is how far our clients have come. It’s been 21 years of helping them grow and supporting them with their ambitious goals. We wouldn’t be where we are, if it wasn’t for them”.

The students did not disappoint. In first place 28-year old Leigh Nikita Cain came up with a bold geometric design with sophisticated mali wenge and driftwood vinyl – a modern twist on a traditional piece of furniture. Abigail Bailey came second with a striking aged wood and resin door with twig handle cast in bronze. Finally, in third place, Ben Hunter impressed by focusing on the technical composition of a door rather than the aesthetics – his work highlighted the need for adaptable doors that can easily be changed with inlays that update the look and feel of a room. Both Leigh and Abigail’s work will now come to life when Deuren’s own craftsmen turn the concepts into reality. Commenting on the reason for the competition, Ian said: “We’re constantly encouraging home owners to think differently about door design. So who better to help us do that, than the creative talent of the future. “We were truly shocked by the innovative thinking among these young students. Choosing the winners was incredibly tough.”

RecruitmentUpdate

Brexit jobs forecast: By Nadio Granata - Director of Marketing Staffex Recruitment Every company in every sector in the UK will be competing for a reduced pool of available workers. A recent report published in the Guardian claims that the pool of available workers in the UK is shrinking fast. Official figures reveal that the number of EU-born workers in the UK fell by 50,000 between October 2016 and December 2016 to 2.3 million, in a decline led by people working in banking, the public sector and construction. When I’m not writing this column on behalf of Stafflex or working in London for a high-tech company, I’m a Teaching Fellow at the University of Leeds Business School. The most common question I get asked there, by the 480 marketing Masters students on this year’s course, is “can you help find me a sponsor?.” In one short year, the biggest cohort of international students ever to study marketing at Leeds University have had their worlds turned upside down as they prepare to complete their degrees this summer and return back to where they came from, as they fear they will not be able to stay long term in the UK due to post-Brexit changes in employment law. When you consider the combined effect of the phenomena that is fewer students carrying out unskilled and semi-skilled jobs and fewer workers arriving from Europe, the maths are there for all to see. According to the report, a shortage of labour is starting to be felt across the economy. From construction, farming and manufacturing to care homes, hotels and restaurants. While the number of EU nationals leaving is limited at present, many businesses, according to the Bank of England, are having trouble hiring from abroad. Some are renting houses

for employees or providing minibuses to ferry people to work, as ways of attracting desperately needed staff. Amid fears that the trickle of departing European workers will become a flood, the search is on for solutions. One of them is investment in automation. Driverless cars are not the only technological advancement likely to affect the workforce in the next year or so. Robotic solutions like those manufactured here in Huddersfield and surrounding towns are beginning to gain traction as the cost/benefits ratio starts to make even more sense when you add into the equation the inevitable labour shortage we face.

And so, dear reader, the moral of the story is … if you are an employer or looking to become a business owner anytime soon, recruit your staff now and get them trained up before you join the fight to recruit more from less.

Seasonality is another factor to be considered as local labour markets shift into field work across the farms of Yorkshire and beyond. The industries most likely to get affected by the labour shortage will be: • • • • •

Farming Catering and hospitality Construction Manufacturing Health and social care

With the pound falling by approximately 20%, the number of migrant workers such as chefs and farm labourers heading to the UK is already falling. This huge reduction in available cash after their living costs, (to send back home to their families), makes the UK a far less attractive employer as they shift to places like France, Sweden and Germany where their disposable income is greater.

De-coding the dress code

Company dress codes have been in the news again recently after two House of Commons committees called for a review of equality legislation. Many examples of company rules around dress and appearance showed that women were being singled out and potentially sexualised by being asked to wear high heels, revealing clothing or make up. The commons review resulted from a petition raised by Nicola Thorpe, who was sent home from her job as a receptionist at PWC for not wearing heels. So where does that leave the Company Dress Code? Should it be abandoned altogether? Not necessarily. In fact, a well thought out dress code can be a good thing. It sets a clear standard for the company, reinforces your brand and avoids disputes about unsuitable clothing. Many companies require staff in customer-facing roles to wear a uniform to ensure a consistent, smart company image. However, there are some key points to

consider to ensure the dress code is fair and non-discriminatory: • Ensure that the rules apply equally to men and women (although the specific requirements may be different, for example ties for men). • Consider whether your proposed rules will affect certain ethnic groups or religions more than others. How can their needs be accommodated within your policy? • While it is reasonable to require a professional, smart appearance, it is not acceptable to apply rules that sexualise one gender more than another. • You are allowed to require employees to cover tattoos or remove piercings. • You may need to consider modifications to dress requirements for disabled employees

There may also be health and safety considerations to take into account. For example, long hair may be a hazard in certain industries and may cause hygiene issues when dealing with food. Requirements for hair to be tied back or covered in these circumstances are perfectly reasonable – and would apply to both men and women. They may even include male facial hair. Similarly, the avoidance of certain footwear such as high heels, open toed sandals or flipflops may be banned for similar reasons. Dress code rules should be written down in a clear policy which is communicated to every employee. If possible, it is a good idea to consult with your employees and get them involved in writing the rules. They may provide valuable input about what is practical – and are much more likely to stick to them if they have created them.

Why do I need a Health & Welfare LPA? If you didn’t have a LPA in place to deal with your Health and Welfare issues you are at a high risk of having strangers make decisions for you on your behalf. Your family and friends would have no power to stop them. Other examples to name a few are:· You may be resuscitated against your wishes · Only your legal next of kin would be consulted · Social Services could make decisions about where your live and the care you require · The Court of Protection may have to become involved with decision making which can be very expensive.

But why is it so important to opt for a Health and Welfare power as well as Property and Finance? A Health and Welfare Power of Attorney, unlike a Power for Property and Finance, is only able to be exercised if you lose capacity and are unable to make the decision yourself. Whilst you are compos mentis, or in other words still able to decide for yourself, nobody else can make a decision on your behalf. Your appointed Attorney(s) will be able to make decisions for you from what you eat, wear and who can visit as well as making sure you receive the correct level or medical and health care. When would you need a Health and Welfare LPA? There are several occasions when you

36

or your loved ones may be asked if you have a Health and Welfare LPA. Some of these occasions include:· If you want to give yourattorney the consent to or refuse for you to receive life sustaining treatment · If your health is likely to deteriorate progressively and you wish to appoint someone to make decisions regarding continued medical and health care etc. · If you feel your loved ones may argue about what is best for your · If you would like someone to decide where you live whether at home or a residential care home and if in a care home which one. What would happen if you didn’t have a Health and Welfare LPA?

Having a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney in place it does not by any means mean that you are ceasing control of being able to make your own decisions. Angela Thorp, an experienced Solicitor in the Private Client team comments that “by granting your Attorneys the power to act in your best interests upon loss of capacity you are appointing your loved ones or friends to decide with you and help come to the best possible conclusion regarding your Health and Welfare affairs.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE ADVICE IN RESPECT OF YOUR LPA PLEASE CONTACT A MEMBER OF OUR SPECIALIST TEAM TODAY ON 0800 015 0340 TO ARRANGE AN APPOINTMENT AT ANY OF OUR OFFICES ACROSS WEST YORKSHIRE.

During the debate the Government told the House of Commons about the progress being made, for example:

Government promises action on workplace dress codes and high heels In March 2017, in the House of Commons, MPs discussed an e-petition relating to workplace dress codes and high heels. The petition was signed by over 150,000 people who called for the requirement for female employees to wear high heels at work to be made illegal. Following the Petition, the chair of the Petitions Committee published a joint report with the Women and Equalities Committee on high heels and workplace dress codes. Caroline Dinenage, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Women and

· The government is developing guidance for employers (working with ACAS, the EHRC and the Health and Safety Executive) including looking at recommendations in the recent report; · The Equality and Human Rights Commission has already taken action to raise awareness on social media and is considering how to improve enforcement of matters under the Equality Act 2010; · The government expects sectors highlighted in the report to review dress codes; and

Equalities, stated that the government intends to take action to tackle sex discrimination in the work place which includes discriminatory dress codes. The Government’s position is that current discrimination law is adequate, however it does acknowledge that some employers are unaware of the law or choose to disregard it.

· The Government is looking at how it can improve employee awareness and the understanding of the legal protection available to them. The Government will be issuing a response to the report later this month which should shed some light on how the government plans to deal with this issue which has drawn recent media attention.

Wrongly advertising statutory apprenticeships becomes an offence on 1 April 2017 From 1 April 2017, Section 25 of the Enterprise Act 2016 comes into force, which creates a new offence relating to wrongly advertising statutory apprenticeships. If in the course of a business, a person providing or offering a course or training wholly or partly in England describes it as an apprenticeship when it is not actually a statutory apprenticeship, they will be committing a criminal offence. The offence is to be classified as

summary only with a maximum penalty of a fine on conviction. The government’s aim in creating the offence is to protect the term ‘apprenticeship’ from misuse particularly to avoid damage to the reputation of apprenticeship schemes by reason of low quality courses not meeting the required standards. Furthermore, it is hoped that by safeguarding the term, employers will have more confidence that they are investing in high quality schemes.

law from the start. Our workshop series is designed to encourage people to take the small steps they need in the first place, rather than wait for a big problem to arise before acting.” The next in the series, Will I Be Fined?, will focus on environmental regulations including waste disposal, and will take place on Tuesday, May 23. Session three, Will I Be Hacked?, takes place on Tuesday, September 12, looking at cyber crime and keeping IT systems secure.

Businesses across Calderdale are set to stay on the right side of the law thanks to a free training session from Huddersfield-based Orchard Facilities Management.

From carrying out risk assessments to keeping paperwork up to date, 20 business owners and managers learned about a range of topics which will help them run their business and minimise risk. Gareth Henderson, managing director of Orchard Facilities Management, said: “Our first seminar in our new home at Independence House was a great success. We had guests in the room from numerous sectors, but many of the challenges they faced were the same. It was great to be able to offer them

practical advice and, with support from our friends at Chadwick Lawrence, to help them meet their legal obligations and keep their businesses safe.” The compliance seminar was titled Will I Be Sued? and was the first in a series of events designed to help local businesses with the often complicated regulations relating to their premises and staff. “Running a business often entails responsibilities that have perhaps not been considered at the outset, but which are absolutely vital to success,” added Gareth. “We’ve seen first-hand the results of people failing to meet their obligations – often simply because they don’t understand what they need to do. As well as the headache of making the necessary changes, there can be a great deal of expense involved – not to mention the damage to their reputation and the risk of criminal charges. “We want to help people avoid these pitfalls and stay on the right side of the

First commercial deal signed since European venture Huddersfield Town has agreed its first commercial deal since venturing into Europe after linking up with the leading international heating systems manufacturer, Viessmann. With representation in 74 countries across the world, the German-owned Viessmann Group has joined up with the Club through Bockelkamp Sports Marketing UG. Town began work with the German sports marketing agency in January to help promote the Club’s corporate profile across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The deal made with Viessmann is the first to come through the six month partnership with the German company who offer match day hospitality,

sponsorship, advertising portfolio, commercial partnerships, events and more to businesses across the three countries on Huddersfield Town’s behalf. Viessmann in the UK showed its support to the Club at the start of the 2016/17 season sponsoring the teamsheets for Town’s First Team, Under-23s and Under-18s sides. As Huddersfield Town becomes a hub for local businesses, Viessmann has joined up with the Club to interact with other organisations whilst also expanding into English football. 32 Viessmann-trained heating installers from the UK and Germany, as well as the UK Managing Director, will be coming to the Terriers’ match against Fulham on 22 April 2017.

The group will play an 11-a-side game at the Club’s PPG Canalside Training Ground on the Friday before the game, watch Town’s Sky Bet Championship match in the Ray Wilson Suite before visiting the National Football Museum. Huddersfield Town Commercial Director Sean Jarvis commented: “Following the increased interest from the media and football fans across Germany and Central Eu-rope as a club we decided to explore into commercial ‘business to business’ opportunities. “This deal with Viessmann shows that the Club now has a strong presence in Germany and is now recognisable on an international front. “Businesses in Central Europe want to make moves into England and Viessmann has come through Huddersfield Town to do that, which is testament to the hard and good work the Club has done both on and off the pitch this season.”

Here2Grow just keeps on growing A formulation testing and regulatory compliance business has increased its turnover by 70% since moving to the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) in Huddersfield in 2012. Here2Grow specialises in formulation development, analytical testing, product insights, innovation management and regulatory services to the personal care, cosmetics and household sectors in the rapidly growing natural and organic markets. It moved into the 3M BIC four years ago, and since then has experienced a 70% increase in its turnover. Husband and wife team Dr Henry and Vinetta Brew founded Here2Grow in 2011. It is a niche organisation providing companies with expert research and development consultancy services. Its aim has always been to de-risk R&D for companies and assist them in realising their new product development aspirations. Here2Grow has an office and a lab on the 3M BIC’s Innovation Avenue, which runs through the heart of the Centre, housing revolutionary technology, workshops and laboratories kitted out with the latest technology designed for R&D. The space has been designed to provide businesses with state-of-the-art facilities and the breathing space to grow and evolve. Dr Brew said: “When I discovered the 3M BIC, it was clear that this specific environment had the key components to meet our R&D objectives. I appreciate the open business and science community within the Centre. Access to collaborations and support

for businesses are available, which is a huge plus. Having businesses ‘in-house’ in the physical and bio sciences is also an advantage as we can walk into each other’s offices if we need support or are looking for collaborations. “Our extensive business growth is testament to the effort and hard work that we put into the company, as well as a love for what we do. Although a small team we have big company understanding and experience, teamed up with fantastic facilities that appeal to our global clients.” 3M BIC’s centre manager, Dr Michael Wilson, said: “Our ethos is all about giving businesses the tools to grow

and succeed. In Here2Grow’s case, we provided them with an office to carry out their regulatory compliance services and lab space for R&D, enabling them to target global players in the industry, as well as access a range of technologies in our shared laboratories and on the neighbouring university campus.” Here2Grow’s portfolio includes startups, micro-organisations and several prestigious global companies. The scope of their work covers homecare, laundry, cosmetics and industrial and institutional products. The Dark Side of Social Media By Sarah Benson: Account Manager, KC Communications

Never heard of dark social? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Dark social is not a new term, it came about back in 2012 and simply refers to social sharing that can’t be accurately tracked. You might not realise it, but a huge number of us are already using dark social. Think about it… how many times do you share links with friends in a messenger app such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger rather than sharing it with them on social media? There are a number of reasons why people are choosing to share content privately. It might be to get round the ‘No Social Media at Work’ policy or simply because you’d rather the entire world didn’t know that you find videos of goats fainting absolutely hilarious! So, why the sudden growth in dark social? The increase in the use of messenger apps has resulted in a shift in the way we communicate. Facebook Messenger caught up with WhatsApp last year when it hit the 1 billion user milestone. A few years ago, sharing content was the main way internet users engaged with social media but the rise in privately sharing content has resulted in dark social becoming a type of word of mouth referral. Word of mouth has always been a challenge for marketers, both in terms of generating it and tracking it. And dark social is proving to be a real headache to marketers wanting to quantify social media results! Referral traffic from social media to your website can be measured when a link is

clicked on within a social media platform, but when that link has been copied and pasted into a messenger app or email it will only show up as direct traffic in your analytics once opened by the recipient. This means that if you’ve experienced a growth in your direct traffic then unfortunately it might not all be down to people directly typing your URL into a browser. A report by marketing firm RadiumOne, stated that dark social is responsible for up to 84% of outbound sharing globally. Can we track dark social at all? If we don’t have the full picture of our web analytics, how are we meant to ensure that we aren’t wasting our resources on the wrong thing? This type of sharing is still social and therefore we need to understand it and its value to both prove and improve the effectiveness of your efforts. We can’t track dark social but there are a few tips and tricks to identify it or reduce it. Firstly, take a look at your direct traffic in your analytics platform. It would be safe to assume that any long links were not typed in manually so there is a good

chance that these could be categorised as dark social. Try and reduce the amount of traffic that falls under the dark social umbrella by making it easier for your users to share content on social media. Prominently display your social sharing buttons (with trackable links!) throughout your site and in all communications. And make sure to include sharing buttons for email, WhatsApp and other dark social channels. If we are being completely honest, dark social is still a bit of mystery! But there are some really interesting conversations going on about its future. We might not be able to track it just yet, but now it’s becoming a hot topic it won’t be long before some better tools or techniques come about. For now, get smart with you web analytics, continue to push your social sharing buttons and don’t forget that the best way to ensure your content gets shared is to create interesting and informative material. We’d love to hear your thoughts on dark social so tweet us @kccomms

Trebled turnover prompts office move for high voltage power experts A high voltage electrical engineering specialist has relocated to new offices having almost trebled itsturnover in the last 12 months. Smith Brothers saw revenue increase substantially to £27m last year, but as orders showed no signs of slowing, the expanding team soon outgrew its previous space on Red Doles Lane, Huddersfield. A 10,000 sqft property on Lowfields Business Park has therefore been bought outright for £700,000, to pave the way for the next chapter of business development. Having moved in to the two-storey premises, the 64-strong team is now concentrating on a busy project schedule. Meanwhile, managing director John Smith has his eyes set on the next phase of recruitment. “When we signed for the new office, we invested a further £50,000 in décor and furniture which means we’re now kitted

out for the next five years” he explains. “We’ve room for more people too, so I’m already on the lookout for project managers, skilled labourers, joiners and qualified high voltage electrical engineers, to join our multi-disciplined team. There’s no reason why we cannot double our workforce over the next four years.” With a nationwide client base in sectors ranging from commercial and industrial, to offshore and renewables, Smith Brothers specialises in high power projects up to 132,000 volts. The team work throughout the UK and Ireland, as well as in overseas countries ranging from Barbados to Azerbaijan. “We’ve now connected close to one Gigawatt of power in the UK alone,”

continues John. “I’m proud of the reputation we’ve built for handling difficult high voltage projects – that’s why we’re securing repeat business with some of the country’s most renowned brands, at the same time as attracting a healthy flow of new enquiries. “Our focus now for 2017, is to consolidate our growth and recruit more talented experts within our niche field. That way we have the skill-sets and infrastructure in place to push for £60m turnover by 2022.” Established in 1990, Smith Brothers continues to be run by joint directors and brothers John and Richard Smith. As an accredited contractor on the Lloyds Register NERS (National Electricity Registration Scheme), the high voltage electrical engineers design, build, install, test and commission safe, energyefficient and robust network systems up to 132kV.

Little gem is a pure delight By Anthony HEGNEY - Managing Director Asparagus Green

1874 the restaurant with its unassuming facade, was established some six months ago, by owner Dave Trafford who has transformed this former unused shop into the little Gem it is today. Dave, (a trained) chef and his team, are on hand for the whole of the dining experience to make sure that it is seamless from start to finish. From reserving the table for my guest and I, the experience was flawless from the phone call to reserve the table, to the parking in the small car park on the next street. On arrival at the restaurant we were greeted by Abbey Dunn who manages the front of house. She was very pleasant and gave us a choice of tables before seating us at the one we chose, on the side of the building overlooking the river. It was dark outside so we couldn’t see much, but I imagine it would have been a great

experience on a light summer evening. Abbey asked us what we wanted to drink; I was thirsty, so decided to go with a Diet Coke before dinner and maybe a glass of wine with my meal. Glen went for Sparkling water with lime, and Abbey did offer us the extensive wine list to browse. It was lovely to see such a buzz in a small restaurant on a Thursday evening. While we were looking over the menu, there was a constant flow of people coming and going, some who had of course opted for the early bird and were leaving. For such as small restaurant, the menu is pretty extensive, with some great choices. There is also the special board on the wall; I thought the writing could do with being a little larger, or maybe that’s a sign of my eyes ageing! I opted for the cured duck to start with, while Glen went for the Avocado, Pomegranate & Orange salad. Both dishes were rustic in style, well presented and full of flavour, one of those occasions where that you don’t want the dish to end. The beginning of a great dining experience. Our conversation soon changed from a catch up and gossip to "ooohhh" and "aaahhh "over the fab food we found ourselves indulging in. Glen commented

46

that his starter was one of the best vegetarian starters he had ever had, with the flavours really getting his taste buds going and even better than the meal he had in Harrods the weekend before, wow what an accolade! Sowerby Bridge over Harrods that says, it all; Well done Dave and team! It wasn’t long before our main course arrived, but before that Abbey returned to the table to see if we had chosen from the extensive wine list, with some great new world wine’s alongside the old faithful, as I opted for a glass of sauvignon blanc. For main course, I chose the seared Sea

nature and wanting to see this hidden gem the success its going to be in the future. One couple that had only moved to the area in recent months had commented that they had seen Dave working tirelessly transforming the run-down building and what a great job he had done and how could they help on spreading the word.

Bass with crushed new potatoes, creamed fennel, leeks, parsley & white wine. This complimented my starter perfectly with a great balance of tastes, and came with a bowl of mixed seasonal vegetables to that we shared. Glen opted for the Butternut Squash Risotto, served with pine nuts, herby salad dots and drizzles of sauce. Once again he was blown away by the flavouring of this dish. As the night went on, there was still a steady flow of people arriving at the restaurant and as we were sat near the exit, we could hear the comments as people left the restaurant, all of positive

Abbey returned to the table, asking if we would like dessert; would we still have room after such a delightful meal? After browsing the menu, how could we resist ? It was such a difficult choice with both of us having such a sweet tooth; Glen I have to say was fast on the uptake of the Italian classic of Tiramisu. I chose the cheeseboard created using all local cheeses from an independent cheese monger. As this was our first visit to 1874, Dave offered to give us a tour of the restaurant. Dave lead us back into the kitchen to see the how he operates, due to the nature of the old shop of course he is limited on space, so the kitchen is compact however very well laid out and equipped. He then lead us down into the

cellar area and its labyrinth of small rooms for which he has great future plans so watch this space Sowerby Bridge you’re in for a treat! Dave then led us back to the restaurant which can be hired out as a private dining room, perfect for that special occasion or business meeting. There are two menus to chose from, the full a la carte with prices for starters from £5.00 and main courses from £13.90. There is also an Early bird menu which is very reasonably priced, with 2 courses at £13.95 All I can say we had a fantastic evening with great food and service and 1874 gets top marks from me and I would encourage you to try it for yourself but don’t leave it too late as this place will get to the point where bookings will have to be made in advance. Buttery Fish Hotpot with samphire and wilted wild garlic This delicious seasonal recipe is ready in moments, with the fresh and tasty ingredients easily sourced locally. There are some brilliant fishmongers on Albion street, Halifax, who will be happy to help and prepare your fish. The restaurant have their fish delivered daily from Hodgsons on the East Coast, who have their own day boats.

Gimbals try and use sustainable, wild fish like Ling, Pollack, Witch and Scarborough Woof in their delicious hotpot. These are fearsome looking fish but the taste is amazing, you may want to stick to fish you know. Either way this recipe is a winner! Fish Fact Scarborough Woof or Wolf Fish is so called because of its prominent fang-like teeth at the front, similar to those of a wolf.

Ingredients Serves 4 All the fish needs to be skinned, boned and diced into one inch chunks. The choice of fish is up to you, but this is what we Gimbals use: 250g Hake, or any firm white fish WILDGARLIC 250g Salmon So, wild garlic is in an 250g Smoked haddock abundance at the moment until late 200g Best quality prawns spring. If your not sure what your looking for have a look at a picture on the internet.

Method Garlic by Erin Battersby from the Noun Project

This dish is not seasoned as the smoked haddock can be salty. Bring the fish stock, white wine, bay leaf and lemon juice up to boil. Add the fish, simmering gently for just a couple of minutes, testing until the fish is just cooked. Add the butter, prawns and samphire after a minute, add the wild garlic.

Remove from the heat immediately and serve into warmed bowls with c hunks of sourdough or crushed Jersey royal potatoes. Enjoy!

Collaboration leads to project success Successful collaboration between four Yorkshire businesses turns tight client project around from design to dispatch in just a matter of weeks.

Bradford-based Myfotowall, a specialist manufacturer of bespoke graphics for wallpaper coverings and sales displays, was given a client brief to look at an existing product and improve its design, functionality, ease of use and assembly, as well as reducing the unit cost. The project had a very tight deadline from day one, with an approved solution needing to be manufactured and dispatched within 14 weeks. Stephen Armitage, managing partner at Myfotowall, came up with the idea of using a 25mm aluminium box section for the main framing elements of the product and needed to design an innovative corner bracket that allowed the frame to be assembled with a push fit, while still being able to be disassembled for future use without the need for tools. Following a visit to the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) in Huddersfield with Yorkshire Connect, Stephen was introduced to the 3M BIC’s capabilities and was inspired by its range of services and ease of accessibility. With potentially 1,500 units required and no final solution, Myfotowall approached the 3M BIC’s design team to create CAD drawings of the proposed design and

convert them into a 3D digitally printed object to test out the concept.

lengths, print and fabricate 1,500 fabric covers and produce 1,500 carry bags.

Following the testing, a few alterations to the design were made and two full sets of eight corner connectors were 3D printed to give a practical demonstration of the proposed solution to the client for approval.

Myfotowall’s Stephen Armitage said: “The attentiveness, dedication and team spirit that was endured throughout this collaborative project, is testament to its success, not only in delivering the solution, on time and on budget, but in proving that innovation is key to delivering success for all involved, from concept to the end user experience.”

Once approved, the drawings were sent to Faulkner Moulds in Halifax, who then manufactured the injection mould tools. The mould manufacture normally takes 8-10 weeks. However, understanding the customer’s need to meet a tight deadline, they designed the injection mould tool around the final CAD design and manufactured the mould within three weeks, allowing the customer to view the tool two days ahead of schedule to reduce the pressure on the final delivery of the project. The moulds were taken to an injection moulding company, Fisher Plastics in Meltham, Huddersfield to produce the 12,000 connectors in an ABS plastic. Their huge capacity allowed them to change production schedules to facilitate a very quick turnaround. Myfotowall then had to convert 8 tonnes of aluminium box section into the required

Dr Michael Wilson, centre manager at the 3M BIC, said: “When we received the brief we knew it would be a tight deadline to get our part of the process complete, but we were able to deliver on time, ensuring that other parts of the process remained on schedule. “It’s a great example of how bringing together the expert knowledge of different businesses can lead to innovation in the region.” The process gained Myfotowall a substantial client order, which, following its delivery into the market has proved to be a huge success for the client and has led to further orders for Myfotowall.

RSA Apprentices claim success

Following National Apprenticeship Week (March 6th – 10th), two young apprentices from global insurer’s RSA offices in Halifax, champion the benefits of being able to earn a wage, whilst gaining practical on the job training combined with study. Co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service, the 10th National Apprenticeship week is designed to celebrate the positive impact apprenticeships and traineeships have on individuals, businesses and the economy. Andy Briggs, aged 19, is a claims handler with a financial services apprenticeship based at RSA’s Halifax office. Andy secured his apprenticeship after starting at university when he soon realised that a degree course was not for him. “University wasn’t right for me, instead the apprenticeship has enabled me to earn whilst I learn and that is very appealing. Not only am I getting paid to develop myself, but also I am building my skill base for the future – skills that I can use in other roles.” Jessica Feldman, aged 18 is also a claims

50

handler. The apprenticeship route appealed to her as it enabled her to become more independent. Jessica acknowledges the discipline needed to work and to study ensuring a good balance of her time for both. Jessica offers some sound advice for anyone interested in applying for an apprenticeship. “I would advise anyone who wasn’t 100% sure about going to university to consider an apprenticeship, as you are building a strong foundation of qualifications and experience – both at the same time! Don’t go to university just because your parents want you to. I have been amazed at the support you get in the workplace where everyone wants you to succeed.” Ian Currie, UK motor & injury claims director, RSA: “All our apprentices are progressing well within the programme. They have started to build up the technical knowledge and operational skills aimed at enabling them to support our customers directly. It is great to hear that the apprentices are enjoying their experience and we have receive good feedback on their performance and progression from line managers and mentors.

“We expect them to take up various operational roles across our Claims function, and will work with them over the course of the programme to identify the best opportunities. We see the apprentices as key to our talent strategy and expect them to contribute to the success of RSA through continuing with their professional development with us.” Global insurer RSA has employed apprentices for over four years throughout its UK offices and has won an industry award. In 2015 the company was shortlisted for Insurance Times Awards - Apprenticeship Scheme of the Year and Beth McNeil won Apprentice of The Year. Kaplan is a leading provider of financial apprenticeships in the UK and work with RSA to recruit and train apprentices. Elizabeth Edwards from Kaplan said: “From the creation of their apprenticeship programme, the whole team at RSA has fully embraced the idea of apprenticeships and has created a fantastic, valuable experience for their apprentices.”
