TopicUK EDITORIAL GUIDELINES Here at Topic, we love to receive your news and feature ideas for your local community business magazine. Below are a few tips on what we’re looking for, but if you need any further advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

SUBMITTING A PRESS RELEASE If you’re sending us a press release to feature online or in the magazine, please keep the following in mind when writing your release: •

Is it really news? Remember, we are here to promote the achievements of businesses within your community, and as such news stories should be related where possible to tangible business results or outcomes, such as an increase in turnover, new team member appointments or new client wins.

Try to summarise the crux of the news in your first paragraph, telling us the who, what, why, when and where of your story. This is the bit that will grab our attention.

Don’t write in the first person. The use of ‘I’ and ‘we’ shouldn’t feature, unless you’re quoting someone involved in the story.

Avoid being overly promotional and plugging a product or service too much. It’s fine to mention the name of your business, but if you want to advertise – we’ll have to ask you to pay for an advert!

Stay clear of fluffy overstatements such as “Topic UK’s fantastically talented Editor, said….”. You may think it, but we prefer to leave personal opinion aside.

Send us a picture that illustrates your story if possible, and ensure it is hi-resolution so we can use it online or in the magazine. Remember to name anyone in the picture, or provide a caption.

Finally, try and keep your sentences short and your press release concise. Ideally, one page of A4 maximum should be sufficient for you to tell us your story.

WRITING A FEATURE If you’re writing a feature for the magazine, please follow the below guidelines. Remember, we can’t re-use content that has already appeared somewhere else: •

Features should be opinion-led (in which case, first person is fine), or advisory or educational about a current industry issue. Remember, the reader should learn something new.

Stick as close to the word count as possible. Our one page features require between 400-450 words, and our double page features are 800-900 words in length.

Break up your copy to maintain the reader’s interest. Try and use bullet points for adviceled articles that will break up dense copy, or incorporate three or four sub-headings that summarise the various parts of your article and keep it interesting.

Finally, try and give your feature a snappy title that summarises what the reader is going to find out by reading your article.

WHY BECOME A PARTNER? The aim of TopicUK since it’s launch over three years ago is to offer a platform for businesses to collaborate, work together and forge a strong bond within our community to strengthen not only our own individual businesses, but that of others, creating ‘social capital’ and strengthening our local economy. TopicUK are offering businesses the opportunity to partner with us, so we can promote and share your success and help grow your business. We believe that if business communities help one another’s social capital, everyone will benefit and we will be stronger. When you become a TopicUK partner, not only do you promote your own business, you become part of the local business community that promotes itself to a much wider audience. TopicUK features local news and business in each of its issues and encourages businesses to work collaboratively, not only strengthening their own company but the local economy, too. Published six times a year, TopicUK is quickly earning a reputation as the best place to promote your business. When you book space, it doesn’t end there; we work hard to promote your advert using social media, our website and of course by word of mouth. We have carefully targeted distribution points for each of our editions, with copies never returned. Readers pick up their copy because of our high quality, local business content and appealing design. We are the go-to-source for local news, events and information. With a circulation of 10,000 copies and an average readership of four per copy, your business could reach up to 50,000 local people.

” TESTIMONIALS

“Our involvement with Topic has been extremely positive and it has given us a great platform to market a variety of legal services in a quality magazine. It has enabled us to increase our profile with both the general public and the local business community.”

Sarah L.Crowther, Partner, Chadwick Lawrence

“Stafflex has both advertised in and sponsored numerous publications over our 15 years of trading. It’s fair to say that we’ve often committed to these campaigns on a whim or due to personal contact with the right owners. TopicUK on the other hand has come at a time when we are far more focused on getting a higher return for our marketing budget. It has helped us to greatly increase our profile both through the magazine’s social media reach and the print edition; our editorials have attracted the attention of key influencers including MPs; trade associations such as the REC and most notably an invitation to present at this years’ Living Wage Conference. By becoming a TopicUK partner it has excluded our rivals from contributing any editorial content thereby leaving us to own the conversation. More importantly we have secured new contracts with employers who have either heard of us for the first time via the magazine or have been reassured about us through seeing us repeatedly featured.”

Brian Stahelin, MD, Stafflex
