A MESSAGE FROM

COLETTE AND CATHIE

W

elcome to the 5th Annual “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival! If you’re reading this message, it means you have received a copy of our inaugural IJY Magazine and Event Guide. This magazine has been a vision of Colette’s for quite some time. We plan on focusing on LOCAL, Central Florida businesses, studios, and people! Fortunately, all of the pieces fell into place this year, and voila! When we were growing up, there was a “clean your plate” mentality. You still had to eat everything, even if you were full! Nothing wasted, bigger is better, more, more, more. Fortunately, for our budgets and our waistlines, as time has passed, the mantra has evolved into “Moderation in all things.” If we were to translate this into “yoga terms,” we’d say “Balance is key” — and we’re not just talking about maintaining your pose! What do we mean by “balance?” Well, on Saturday, if you trip the light Fantastic and go out dancing and have a couple of cocktails, maybe on Sunday, you can “chill out” and wear yoga pants — and come to a festival! Or, eat chocolate when you crave it, but have a nice salad for lunch! Don’t deprive yourself of what you want — but rein it in when

We hope you enjoy reading about topics we’ve selected for this issue: Functional Medicine, Kava, CBD, Hot Yoga (infrared), just to name a few. If you have additional topics you’d like to read about, let us know for our next edition, coming this fall! Namaste, Colette & Cathie

giving back SHINING A BRIGHT LIGHT ON A LOCAL NONPROFIT —

NEW HOPE FOR KIDS 5th Annual “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival is proud to partner with New Hope for Kids for our 2019 event because of the important services they offer the Central Florida community and their commitment to all they assist. Imagine...

... waking up one morning to learn that your mommy or daddy has died. ... being a five-year-old and losing your hair because of chemotherapy and feeling too sick to play. Experiencing death, serious illness and despair is often overwhelming, but there is always hope, and since 1996 there has been New Hope for Kids. It’s difficult enough for adults to deal with the grief and pain associated with serious illness and death. Imagine how it would be to cope as a child. Since 1996, New Hope for Kids has helped Central Florida children and families during some of the most stressful and challenging times of their lives. Support and hope are offered in the homelike environment of our Center for Grieving Children. Families with kids ages 3 to 18 come to us during a time of extreme vulnerability — because of the death of a loved one caused by illness, accident, murder or suicide — suddenly unsure of what the future holds. Specialized activities in peer group settings gently guide these children through the grief process. In addition, their parents or caregivers receive support, providing a whole-family healing experience. Our Wishes for Kids Program improves the quality of life for children who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Their diagnosis can be life-changing in many ways. Medical restrictions may keep them 6 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA

from spending time with friends. Limitations or physical disabilities may cause isolation, reducing educational opportunities and limiting progress. Granting a child’s very special wish brings them joy for today, hope for the future, and memories to last a lifetime. Gloria Capozzi, Volunteer & Marketing Manager for New Hope for Kids says, “We love being involved in local events like It’s Just Yoga Fest, because they help us raise funds to support our programs while educating the Central Florida community about our services.”

e l P a h t c e , s h O o u'l l Y ! Go C ongratulations! Today is the day. You're off to try Yoga! You're off to Namaste!

You have your hands at heart center. You have your feet on the mat. You can place yourself, in any pose that you choose! You're all on your own, yet you’re never alone. And YOU are the one who'll select where you go. You might look at all methods. Look 'em over with care. About some you might say, "I don't choose to go there." However with your heart full of love and your heart full of peace, you’ll look for the method where your stress will decrease.

Oh! The Places You'll Go! You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! As you try acro-yoga and soar to high heights! Or perhaps staying on land is more of your speed? Maybe Yin yoga’s meditative poses Are what you should heed! Sometimes it’s just what your body may need. 8 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA

Whatever you try, it’ll be best of the best. Wherever you go, it’ll top all the rest. You may come to a place where the classes are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked. A place you could challenge both your core and your mind! Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to unwind? How long do you pose? How deep are your breaths? And when you go in, you see Warrior I, left then right... Warrior II and then Reverse Warrior… Or, maybe, not quite? Or try something mellow, just for your mind… Yoga Nidra, with CBD, is possibly more your kind. You can get so confused that you may start to pace back and forth along your path, with a question mark on your face.

But during your quest, you find vinyasha, bikram, hatha, and more. And then you realize ALL roads lead to… Your Happy Place... ...where people are just posing. Posing in Cobra or maybe Tree, or how about Downward Dog? Don’t they look free? Or for a good stretch, I think cat-cow is the best. But you can’t beat a good Child’s Pose when you want a rest. Oh, the places you'll go! There is yoga to be done! There are so many places to visit, it’s hard to select just one. Oh, the magical places you can do all your poses, a studio, a Church, a rooftop, a brewery, And even the grass, amid all the “dew”ery. Or even the beach is within your reach And when you are done,

there's a very good chance you'll love it so much that you’ll buy new yoga pants. There are some power classes, down the road, hither and yon, that wear you out so much, you won't want to go on. But on you will go And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

Kid, You'll Pose Mountains! So... You're off to Happy Places! Today is your day! Your mountain pose is waiting. So... get on your way!

HOT YOGA

IT'S LIT BY IJY STAFF

I

n our never-ending quest to educate people about different types of yoga, the IJY staff, with significant assistance from Lori Maier, an owner of an infrared yoga studio, researched the benefits of Hot Yoga for our readers. There are many physical benefits to yoga, such as:

• Increases flexibility and range of motion which may reduce risk of injury during day to day activity and other sports; • Helps to strengthen cardiovascular system and increase endurance; • Works the muscles, as well as your internal organs, glands and nervous system for a full body benefit; • Increases overall energy and helps to balance hormones; • Promotes better digestion and more sound sleep; • Burns calories and improves metabolism which promotes weight loss; • Improves coordination and body awareness; • Reduces symptoms of both chronic and acute injury; • Decreases blood pressure; • Promotes a mind-body connection for a more positive outlook and calm/balanced state of being.

Why practice Hot yoga over non-heated yoga?

As listed above, there are many benefits to practicing yoga. When you add practicing yoga in a heated room (room temperature between 95 and 105 degrees), the benefits further multiply. Practicing yoga in a heated room: • Increases blood flow to the muscles so they are more pliable; • Increases your pulse rate and metabolism, allowing your blood vessels to become even more flexible; • Allows your body to burn more calories. • Improve the lymphatic system and aids in the elimination of toxins.

Do you mean Bikram Yoga?

No, not in this case. Please note that all Bikram Yoga is “hot” yoga, as it is practiced in a hot room. But not all “hot yoga” is Bikram. Bikram yoga is a copyrighted term, specifically pertaining to 26 poses performed in a 10 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA

FEEL AMAZING Relaxation. Decreased cortisol and increases serotonin. Detoxification. Detoxifies 7x more than traditional saunas; detoxifies of heavy metals, radiation, and environmental toxins. Pain Relief. Infrared heat penetrates tissue, joints, and muscles to relieve aches and pains. Cell Health and Improved Circulation. Stimulates the circulatory system and oxygenates the body's cells.

LOOK AMAZING Anti Aging and Skin Purification. Infrared wavelength is the most effective wavelength for healing the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. Infrared stimulates collagen production to reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone. Weight Loss. Studies have shown that benefits of an infrared sauna session can burn upwards of 600 calories while you relax! As the body works to cool itself, there is a substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more calories.

hot room. Hot (NON-Bikram) yoga often tends to be a flowing vinyasa style of practice, in which the teacher instructs students in a series of linked poses.

How are the Studios Heated?

Some yoga studios contain traditional forced-air heating systems, which uses ducting and vents to pump air into a room. Some use space heaters. Some studios are very humid (on purpose), while other studios control the humidity. There is no one right way to heat a room. It’s all personal preference of the user. It’s kind of like deciding if you want to vacation in Vegas during the summer (dry heat) or Orlando (humid). Some yoga practitioners love to be in the hot, humid room, with sweat coming off everyone’s bodies. Just like walking around Disney in the summer, it often makes for an oppressively hot environment that’s stuffy and difficult to breathe in.

Lori Maier, the owner of Urban Om Power Yoga offers Infra-Red yoga classes in the Lake Mary area. Lori loves, as a studio owner, “To witness the power of community, support, and friendship that yoga provides.” She continues that the “growth that you experience on an emotional, mental and spiritual level are profound.” Please see our yoga studio guide for a studio in your area that offers Infra-Red yoga classes!

**Though hot yoga and infrared heat are shown to have documented health benefits for many, caution should always be exercised when exposing the body to excessive heat during pregnancy, infancy, children under the age of 13 and in the senior years to avoid dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and heat stroke. Contact your health care provider before beginning a regime of infrared exposure to assess if it is right for you.

However, a new trend for hot yoga is using an infrared heating system. Using the infrared heat enables studios to offer an environment that’s just as hot as the forced air counterpart, but the infrared environment is much more like the “dry heat” of Vegas in the summer. It’s just as hot in the room, but the air is not humid. You ask “How is this possible?” Instead of heating air and forcing it through a room, infrared heating systems transfer a therapeutic sun-like-warmth directly to people and objects. Infrared heat (IR) are invisible waves of heat energy provided by infrared rays that have the ability to permeate deep into your body (2-7 cm) to all layers of the body, penetrating into the inner layers of skin, tissues, muscles, nerves and bone. IR then boosts local blood circulation, which brings more healing nutrients and pain relieving components to the area, while promoting a detoxifying sweat. Infrared heat, according to studies, allows you to eliminate about seven times more toxins than regular heat, increases circulation, reduces inflammation, improves muscle recovery, and allows you to burn more calories to aid in weight loss.

T

here’s no question that CBD is the wellness product of the moment. Coffee shops sell CBD lattes, spas offer CBD facials, beauty companies are rushing to release lotions with CBD and your anxiety prone co-worker has a bottle of CBD at her desk. The IJY Staff even took a yoga class called Restore: CBD-infused Yoga for Stress Relief, Hosted by Alight and Aligned Yoga, with Sarabeth Jackson and Heal 407. It was a wonderful evening and we recommend checking it out! But even with all the buzz, most Central Floridians still ask…

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol (can-na-bid-i-ol), which is found naturally in hemp plants.

Does CBD Come From Marijuana?

Yes, but CBD is found in all the cannabis family of plants. CBD (cannabidiol) is one of many beneficial chemical compounds found in cannabis. There are many “types” of cannabis just as there are many “types” of roses. From a legal standpoint, what is known as Marijuana comes from cannabis plants with higher than the legal limit (0.3%) of another cannabinoid known as TCH (the one responsible for the “high” associated with Marijuana use). • CBD is not psychotropic like THC. CBD does not cause a feeling of “high” (alteration in a person’s mental state). • The 2018 Farm Bill that recently went 12 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA

into effect, clarified that Hemp, and its derivatives and extracts, is not a schedule 1 controlled substance, and is now federally legal to grow, manufac- ture, and consume.

At present, products containing CBD derived from Hemp are considered supplements and are, therefore, not approved by the FDA for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of any disease. You should see this statement on products and websites for reputable CBD product manufacturers and providers.

Why is CBD Becoming So Popular?

More and more people are learning about how much CBD can help manage many conditions, from the mild to the severe. CBD products can help manage: • Anxiety • Depression • Sleeplessness • Pain • Inflammation, and more

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works within the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of the body. The ECS is a complex network of cannabinoid receptors expressed in cells of both the central and peripheral nervous system. In basic terms, the ECS helps modulate the regulation of homeostasis (stable equilibrium) across all major body systems ensuring that all systems work in concert with one another.

Scientists do not yet have a full and complete understanding of what the ECS does, but the ECS helps: • to fine-tune most of our vital physiological functions; • help maintain immune system balance; • affects everything from sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, memory, mood, and even reproduction. The scientists’ hypothesis is that a deficiency in the ECS may lie at the root of some disorders and that by supplementing the body with naturally occurring cannabinoids from plants, the deficiency can be corrected to relieve symptoms and restore health.

IJY Editorial Opinion

CBD is far from a “cure-all,” but it has the potential to contribute significantly to a healthy lifestyle. The most important factors for a healthy lifestyle still remain diet and exercise. Yet if you are interested in trying CBD, a knowledgeable professional should be able to give you input on what to look for when purchasing a CBD product. They can also give you guidance on how much to take. IJY Staff would like to thank Margaret Latham, owner of Blue Lotus Botanicals, for the research used in this article. If you want to learn more, you can meet local CBD retailers at the 5th Annual It’s Just Yoga Health & Fitness Festival.

"JAVA?" NO, IT'S

"K-A-V-A"

So, What is Kava?

Kava is a somewhat controversial, “muddy” or “unpleasant” tasting substance, that comes from a root native to the South Pacific region. It is sometimes referred to as “Nature’s Xanax.” Kava is like chamomile on steroids. Native Islanders have used it for centuries as everything from a pain reliever to a ceremonial drink. In fact it is STILL being used there for celebrations and social events. A potent anxiety reliever, Kava offers a non-alcoholic way to wind down at the end of the day, especially if you’re working late or you have trouble falling asleep. The secret lies in kavalactones, the psychoactive parts of the kava plant. The kavalactones in a cup of kava tea, or a few drops of kava extract, can put you into a relaxed state of focus. In the brain, they operate on non-opiate pathways to offer a natural and non-narcotic action against anxiety. Some clinical research even suggests that they're as good or even better than pharmaceutical drugs like benzodiazepines.

BY IJY STAFF Benefits of Kava

Kava has been used to treat a number of conditions, including: • Anxiety • Stress • Trouble sleeping • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

How Do I Take Kava?

• Kava Tea This is the most common method to

take Kava for anxiety. Kava tea has very earthy taste and appears like mud. You can add milk or cream and honey to reduce the muddy taste of the tea.

Kava Tincture/Liquid The liquid form of Kava is very potent and it has a whiskey-like taste. It is sold in small bottles; size ranging from 2-6 ounces. And, if you don’t like the taste of

whiskey, it can mixed in juice via drop- per to mask the whiskey taste. Ensure that you take a very small dose of Kava tincture as it is highly concentrated.

Kava Capsules These contain Kava powder and they are easily ingested. Persons who do not like the taste of Kava can take it in the form of capsules.

Is it Safe?

Like any other supplements you should always do you homework and make sure it is safe and right for you. You can check out what the National Institute of Health says about Kava at nccih.nih.gov

well-being [W]HOLISTIC MEDICINE

WELL-BEING FOR YOUR WHOLE BEING! BY IJY STAFF

W

hen you think about holistic medicine, a few common stereotypes may come to mind. You likely may think about the use of all-natural remedies or the fundamental connection between body, mind and spirit. And, you may also think that Holistic medicine is the same as Functional medicine, which is the same as Alternative medicine, which is the same as Integrative medicine, and is NOT the same as Conventional medicine. And you would be right! AND you would be wrong. There is not enough space in this inaugural edition of the “IJY Magazine and Event Guide” to fully explain the commonalities and differences of these practices of medicine. Many times, the terms are used interchangeably. “Google” even appears confused. What started out being referred to as “holistic medicine” has evolved into also being referenced as “functional medicine” and/or also being referred to as “integrative medicine,” by our friends on the internet. For purposes of this article, we will be referring to holistic, functional and integrative medicine somewhat interchangeably for purely selfish reasons! Otherwise this amazingly clever title does NOT work!

less, confused, and disempowered like” our health is “up to chance, a genetic roulette.”

Dr. Brooke explained that many people would know EXACTLY what to do if they came back from vacation to a closed house - and one of their favorite house plants was a withering, wilting “shell” of a plant.

In this hectic world we live in, we have created our very own “evolutionary mismatch,” says Dr. Brooke. We spend most of our time indoors. We are under tremendous pressure – between working, spending time with loved ones – children, partners, parents, friends – and handling the various crises that arise. We get through the day by drinking caffeine in the morning (or all through the day) and a glass of wine or ten at night. Many of us depend upon pharmaceuticals to help us cope. (Not that there is anything wrong with that!) And this is BEFORE we have to get on I-4!

To cut through all of the internet “noise” and learn more about ways to improve our health, have a better quality of life, and be the best version of ourselves, the IJY staff contacted Dr. Brooke Stuart, a Doctor specializing in Functional Medicine and Holistic Counseling. Dr. Stuart, a Central Florida native, is the creator of “The Let Go & Grow” Philosophy. (You need to “LET GO” of what isn’t working and optimize or “GROW” what is!) She is also a frequent guest on WKMG, Channel 6.

Why of course! You would give your plant plenty of attention, clean water, open the window for some fresh air and direct sunlight! Maybe re-pot it in some nutrient rich soil and give it some TLC. You recognize instinctively that the plant’s bleak environment, while you were away, is what caused the plant to wilt and wither. Dr. Brooke said in medicine, this concept is called an “evolutionary mismatch.” The plant was in a situation where it was NOT going to thrive and entered into a state of survival.

Dr. Stuart spent several hours with the IJY staff and we appreciate her knowledge, her in-

However, when it comes to our own bodies, Dr. Brooke explains that we “often feel help-

safety and you need to learn what is best for you. You need “Space plus Grace.” Space to process and grace to learn and grow. • Evidence Based – Work is based on the latest research. • Restorative – Designed to build you up. A foundation is set for you, and the focus is on forward movement, no regression, and improving your overall life. • Safe – The treatments have mild to no side effects, and other unrelated complaints often improve as a positive by-product of your treatment. • Proactive – Treatment is more than just preventative. Conventional medicine may seem that it is reactive and disease oriented, and perhaps the doctor is just “putting a band-aid” on a problem, versus really trying to find out what the underlying cause is. YOU need to be your biggest advocate and choose an empowered path and provide your body with the right tools to set it free.

According to the Institute for Functional Medicine, “Functional Medicine is a personalized, systems-oriented model that empowers patients and practitioners to achieve the highest expression of health by working in collaboration to address the underlying causes of disease.” In functional medicine, doctors use the best of modern and ancient practices, to recommend supplements, sophisticated devices, mindset techniques, diet, and lifestyle changes. Dr. Brooke creates a personalized treatment plan for each of her patients, incorporating all of these areas. She supports the process and partners with the patients with counseling, acupuncture, and therapeutic intervention to balance the system. She also interacts with conventional doctors re: certain medications or tests, if she feels this is necessary. Functional medicine is not in “competition” with other types of medicine. It incorporates all factors from the diagram above, which helps in the healing of her patients’ whole self, both mind and body! Dr. Brooke defines functional medicine as: • Holistic – Addresses all aspects of the person, including their body, mind and life as a whole. Reset your system. Clear the slate and reduce the noise, so you and your doctor can really see what is going on under the surface. • Personalized – Every treatment is unique and different because every person is unique and different. • Patient Centered – What YOU want – your desires, vision and objectives are the focal points of your work together. Take owner- ship of your experiences. No one knows your mind and body like you do. • Participatory –The practitioner and patient enter into a partner- ship. You are empowered and encouraged to take an active role in the healing process. You can own things. You need to make things happen FOR you, not TO you. • Root-Seeking – Seek to get to the heart of the problem through a variety of simple and sophisticated means, ranging from simple questionnaires to lab work. Are you tired and run down? Is this due to thyroid issues, anxiety? Your mind sends you signals of

In order to better understand how functional medicine is used, during our conversation we created a “real-life” example so we could understand the basics of the process. Everything Dr. Brooke said made sense, and seemed reasonable, but we wanted to see it “in action.” One of the largest stressors in our area currently is Interstate 4. We asked, what we thought was a basic question. “What tips could you give our readers about stress and dealing with I-4?” Dr. Brooke answered, “Well, first I’d have to figure out what is the underlying cause of the stress. What is causing the reaction to the construction? Do you make it more stressful by overscheduling and running from appointment to appointment without leaving time in between? Do you have a hard time saying no? Trouble with time management? In essence, how can we reverse engineer your experience to find a solution?” If you picture yourself as the above I-4 driver, are you the plant that receives nurturing and is thriving and finds out WHY you are stressed, and corrects the underlying cause? Or are you the plant that paints your leaves green, is not healthy, and keeps repeating the same patterns day after day? One of the main questions functional medicine can help to answer is why? And then, the journey begins to unfold. Dr. Brooke takes it a step further and helps answer questions such as “Who? What? And Where?” you are — as she believes this can accelerate the healing process. Who? You are the creator of your reality because you have the power to choose. What? You are important, unique, capable and so much more. Where? You are in the present moment. From this space, healing can begin. While Dr. Brooke Stuart’s office is in Maitland, FL, she treats patients from Central Florida and all over the world. Virtually, she is able to have sessions with a patient whether they are out of town, or “on the tour.” However, YOU can meet Dr. Brooke Stuart at the “It’s Just Yoga” Festival on March 10, 2019 at the Chris Vella State Farm’s “Peaceful Pavilion.“ Dr. Brooke will be leading meditation from her heartbased practice and her “Let Go and Grow” program.
