Hello

Bletchley Buzz is your local magazine for Bletchley, Fenny Stratford, Newton Leys and Newton Longville

Owner Claire Pilsworth Tel: 01908 464164 Advertising: claire@bletchleybuzz.co.uk Our main feature is written by Angie McAllister of AM Content, who also edits the magazine. If you’re interested in finding out more about what she does visit www.amcontent.co.uk

Welcome to the 2017 edition of Bletchley Buzz and with Milton Keynes celebrating 50 years I have a great feature on page 10 about the history of Bletchley and the birth of Milton Keynes. It seems noone can start a new year without mentioning resolutions. My friends at Sherwoods Accountants have provided a fantastic guide about how to keep to your goals but I have also included an article about some positive resolutions to keep you feeling great throughout the year. One of the suggestions is to eat something new and what better way than to try out a recipe from our regular feature from Jam MooKow, this edition it is a familiar recipe with a small twist. Talking of resolutions for the new year, Bletchley Buzz’s chosen charity, Supershoes, have shared with us what they hope for 2017 and ways that you can help. Some are easier than you might think so please have a read on page 12 they would really appreciate it and so would I. Many of us have dreams of success in 2017 but if you want to be inspired

by a real life local success story, Paul Collins of MK Physiotherapy Clinic shares his story with us on page 18. As always I have an edition crammed full with what’s on over the coming weeks and MK Theatre have given us a tempting preview of the year to come with a line up of some fantastic shows. I am looking forward to seeing as many as possible. There is also a ticket competition to see Back to Bacharach at The Stables in Wavendon, you really do have a great chance of winning so get entering before the closing date. Happy reading and Happy New Year Claire

Keep talking, whoa keep talking.

The celebrations continue on Riverside Meadow with some top-secret entertainment to be announced in the coming months. And we’re not breaking there! Sunday 09th July will see our 30th Classic and Vintage Car Parade and Show and that is quite some achievement. Entries are now open and we wheely want it to be bigger and better than ever!

Kicking off on the road again, Saturday 8th July’s parade will be Transport and Travel themed.

hospitals and also to street kids. To Adults in TB and AIDS hospitals. To disadvantaged families and to women’s refuges. To older folk in hostels with no supporting families. Each year Rotary sends around 50,000 Shoeboxes or gifts.

Why next year it’s automatic, it’s systematic, it’s hyyyyyyyydromatic…. why it’s 30 years of the classic car show!! 2017 sees Newport Pagnell Carnival’s classic car show reach the big three-zero and you “auto-know” that we’re celebrating the only way we know how: Carnival style!

Originally started by North West Rotary clubs in 1994, the Rotary Shoebox Scheme was then intended to provide children of Iasi, in north-east Romania with Christmas gifts. Since then, the scheme has become a national project supported not only by Rotary clubs but also by individuals, schools, companies, churches, Inner Wheel, Rotaract & Interact etc.

We want you to drive everybody wild with your brilliant ideas so enter now and get planning.

Gifts are now sent out throughout the year to many different countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Toys are especially useful all year round for birthday presents in the orphanages, homes and hospitals. All age groups, including teenagers, have welcomed the boxes. Rotary have delivered to children and teenagers in orphanages,

The strengths of the Rotary Shoebox Scheme over other similar schemes are: • It operates all year round • The boxes are distributed to known contacts • We can guarantee that every Shoebox goes to a deserving child or family. Mayor and Mayoress help Interactors of MK Academy

better slow your mustang down because we’ve still got seven months to go and lots of fundraising events planned to get you really fuelled up for the main event. Beep beep’m beep beep yeah!! Anyway that’s enough from us…car puns and lyrics are exhausting! Share with your family, friends and anyone who’ll listen and in the meantime have a Happy New Year. The Carnival Committee

Mayor Steve Coventry was the first to offer help to the Interact (Junior Rotary) Club of Milton Keynes Academy. The young people had sourced carrier bags full of small items which would fit inside a specially designed shoebox in answer to a Rotary appeal to send as many shoeboxes as possible to Romania in time for Christmas. The Interactors had appealed to their sponsor Rotary club of Milton Keynes and Rotarians from Wolverton and Stony Stratford to fill a carrier bag each. To this was added their own efforts. The goal had been to fill 100 boxes but the final count was 120. Many Romanian families will have a gift of toys, warm clothing and household items to brighten their Christmas thanks to the Interact Club of Milton Keynes Academy and other Rotary clubs around the district.

News From the Lions Club of Bletchley

MK Community Foundation and the Lions Club of Bletchley funded and arranged for 30 local children to go to a party in Elstree, the party was based on Jungle Book. MK Community Foundation and the Lions Club of Bletchley arranged for to take 30 local disadvantaged and disabled young people to a party with the help of funding from MK Community Foundation. The party was the Lions District Youth Celebration and was held at Elstree on Sunday afternoon and a total of 450 people attended the theme was based on Jungle Book. This was the ninth year this event has taken place, organised by Lions V J Aurora. It was wonderful watching the disadvantaged youngsters enjoying themselves dancing to YMCA, Music man etc. There is also face painting, balloon making and loads of food. Here is what two of the parents told us about the day; ‘It was wonderful thank you,

my children and I have been coming for years usually with a carer but this was the first time I came on my own, I was very impressed with the devotion put in and the obvious commitment you have to making the world a better place.’ ‘I am a single disabled mother and I struggle so much with pain and coping day to day life, Gopal is sick and has very special diet, I am his mother, we don’t have anyone to share our worries with! So, it was very lovely to just let go for a short while and forget all the pain and suffering and delight in the spectacular arrangements that you had made, with attention to every single detail it was more than perfect, although a bit of Michael Jackson may be good next year! I loved the Indian DJ and the funny Indian songs and dances and of course the balloons face painting were incredible, I was so impressed that in charity and love someone would take so much time and effort and expense for disabled children etc., we really appreciate it so much thank you from the core of my heart’ The Lions Club of Bletchley donated £500 to St Mary’s Church Food Cupboard to purchase fresh food, these are purchased

Food is delivered directly to the door of every recipient family, with no cost to themselves. The service is provided through voluntary donation; be it food, time or financial support. There are two food packs distributed by Food Cupboard: one which provides the basic food needed to feed a family of four for one week and one for a small family, (single parent and baby or very young child [with nappies and baby milk/food as required]). The packs include non-perishable, frozen and fresh food. An adjustment is made for family size by increasing or decreasing the frozen and fresh food. Larger families may well receive a ‘double pack’ made up of two complete packs.

Bletchley and the birth of Milton Keynes by Herb Booth, Heritage Officer, Bletchley Community Heritage/Living Archive MK When plans for a major expansion in North Buckinghamshire were first floated around 1962, Bletchley had already experienced many years of development. Spurred on by a dynamic and ambitious Urban District Council, Bletchley had grown from a population of around 7,000 in the 1930s to almost 20,000 – and it was still expanding faster than other small towns across the country. The Bigger Better Brighter campaign, an idea formed in the 1930s but shelved during the Second World War, had aimed to develop Bletchley into a vibrant urban area by 1967. Bletchley UDC worked hard to attract companies during the early 1950s and even built factory units for lease. With those companies came workers and their families and Bletchley built a huge number of houses, expanding to the west of the railway and impressing government officials with their enthusiasm for development. From 1962 to 1966 there was a great deal of talk about the proposals for expansion of urban areas in the south east of England. Bletchley wanted to be involved but when the first plans for North Bucks were released the new urban development was not planned to be centred on Bletchley. So

10

what did Bletchley do? It created its own rival plan and unveiled it at a press conference in London. The Bletchley plan, however, was smaller, with a planned population of 150,000 residents, than the new town options that were to develop later into the Milton Keynes plan. This was one of the main criticisms of the Bletchley plan – along with the suggestion that the population density in the proposed expansion are would be unsustainable. The County Council had produced two alternative plans but the preference of County Architect Fred Pooley was a futuristic settlement with an integral monorail system. The government chose the second idea as the basis of a linear grid system for Milton Keynes and, after the designation of the new town on 23 January 1967, the executive team was recruited and detailed planning could begin. So what was the town like at the time? By the 1960s industrial Bletchley was thriving, with a wide variety of factories operating in the recently developed Denbigh and Bilton estates. Residents remember that they could buy anything they needed at the shops, most of which were local traders but also, as the town grew, chain stores such as Boots, Sketchley and Woolworths. Not

forgetting the Co-op (main picture) which had been a major employer and provided services from the cradle to the grave. Bletchley had a very active community at the time, regular social and sport activities, youth groups and entertainment. Local groups and traders supported an annual carnival each August. Unfortunately Bletchley also lost some of its heritage during this period. Modernisation was the watchword in the 1960s and Bletchley’s Victorian railway station was a victim of this trend. Later in Milton Keynes’ development the town would also The Queen’s visit to Warwick Place, Bletchley April 1966 lose the treasured Central Gardens. Bletchley people were used to change. But this was on an entirely different scale. Many people were nervous of the impact. Local farmers protested strongly. The UDC, however, welcomed the new challenge which would bring new opportunities and big town facilities. While Milton Keynes was in its infancy Bletchley town centre was built up to service the first of the new population in developments being constructed along a corridor between there and the other original towns of Stony Stratford and Wolverton. It was an important part of the early provision of services in the early years for the new population arriving to live in the thousands of houses being built each year once the master plan had been put into action.

Here is the news from Supershoes Hello, and a very Happy New Year, to all of you! This edition of the Bletchley Buzz is called ‘New Year, New You’, so I was thinking about what the new year might bring for Supershoes, and, most importantly to the children we help. Hope is the word that comes first to mind. A new year can feel like a new beginning. For children and their families, who’ve had a horrible 2016, with perhaps a cancer diagnosis, or a round of gruelling treatment, a new year will come with the hope that 2017 will be better. And that’s exactly what we hope for them too, with all our hearts. And what about Supershoes? What hopes do I have for this awesome charity? Well, if I had 3 wishes, this is what I’d wish for (not necessarily in this order, mind you!): Volunteers We always need more people to help. We’re very proud that Supershoes runs entirely with volunteers. Our Super Team does a tremendous job, and they’ll all tell you there are never enough hours in the day. So, if you’re looking to do something new and different in 2017, how about thinking about volunteering for us? Do you have to be a painter? No, of course not, although we’re always happy to recruit new Super Artists. Do you have to be good with computers? Not at all! We need people to do all kinds of other things, especially fundraising. Want to find out more? Ring me and let’s have a chat. I’m on 01908 274944.

Artist, back to us and then on to the child. Our hope is, long-term, to be able to increase the number of pairs of shoes we send out. There are so many very poorly children out there who need a boost, to feel special, and our hope is to reach as many of them as we can. But we can’t do it without funds. For something new in 2017, how about putting on an event? We have lots of suggestions on our website at www.supershoes. org.uk/fundraising. If you’d rather help out at an event, or do some bucket-shaking for us, we need you too. Awareness This is an easy one! My third wish for 2017 is to make Supershoes a well-known charity. This is where you come in. Please tell three friends about us. That’s all, just three people. If everyone reading this tells three people about the work we do, imagine how many we’ll reach! If you’re not sure about exactly what we do, have a look at our website. If you belong to a group, and would like me to come along and talk to you all about it, I’d love to! Please ring me on 01908 274944, and we’ll book a date. I look forward to keeping you all up to date with how my wishes for 2017 are progressing as the year goes on. Until next time, with love, peace and gratitude, Sarah x

Positive resolutions for a fantastic 2017

Every year at this time we set ourselves goals but how many are still going strong as January ends? And we often feel bad if we ‘fail’. That’s why we’re switching things up and giving you ideas for resolutions that will make you feel so great you’ll want to carry on for the whole year. We’d love to hear how you get on!

Get back to nature

Our busy city-based lives can make you feel cut off from nature and that can leave you feeling out of sorts. Whether it's taking a daily winter walk to one of our many woods or lakes, tending your garden regularly as the frosts lift, or planning a family camping trip or a quiet retreat somewhere beautiful, getting back to nature will boost your mood no end. And you don't even have to hug a tree – unless you want to! Be a friend At this time of year there are many people who dread the long dark evenings spent alone. Why not volunteer with Age UK to make regular visits to someone nearby in need of companionship or invite an elderly neighbour over for dinner as often as you can? Friendships boost your wellbeing so you’ll feel better for it too. Try saying yes Make 2017 the year of YES! It's amazing, when

20

we notice it, how often we say no to things. Sure, your time is precious, but just think about how many opportunities and experiences you’re missing by saying no. So next time a friend suggests a weekend away, you get invited to an event or asked to take on a new project at work why not agree and see where it takes you! Eat something new Rather than committing to that postChristmas diet again, this year why not try eating more… variety that is. Shake things up by trying out new veggies you've never cooked with before (that’s healthy and fun!), whip up a new dish or simply add some unusual spices to an old favourite. Take a look at our recipe page to find out how to give chard a try, pick up recipe books in the sales or you could even sign up for a cookery class with the added bonus of meeting new people and having a weekly reminder of (and inspiration for) your resolution. Make more you time New Years resolutions usually revolve around things you need to stop or activities that feel like a chore. How about this year you stop all of that and instead commit to doing simple things that just make you feel good. By spending an hour a day, or an evening a week, reading, enjoying a bath or even just relaxing or watching a film, you'll find you have more energy to put back into your relationships and work. Take steps to change Getting in shape is at the top of many people’s resolution list, but if you struggle to find time to hit the gym, or want a lower cost fitness option, try picking up a pedometer or health tracking app instead. You can see how many steps you're currently doing and look for ways to hit your 10,000 per day by making small changes. If you use your phone you can also download favourite running tracks and apps like Yoga Studio and Nike Training Club that give you different exercises to try. Plus you’ll never forget your tracker!

It’s going to be a chard January

Last year I grew chard for the first time. Chard seeds often seem to be given away with gardening magazines so I had had seeds knocking around for a while. However, I’ve never seen the point of growing something if you don’t want to eat it. Radishes, for example, are probably the quickest and easiest vegetable to grow and I have grown them a lot over the years but every time I do nobody wants to eat them and they end up on the compost heap. I figured the same would be true of chard.

Lasagne Ingredients 1 carrot, 1 small onion, 2 mushrooms and stems of the chard 250g beef mince 250g pork mince 1 clove garlic, finely chopped or crushed 500ml passata 1 tablespoon tomato puree 1 beef stock cube A dash of worcestershire sauce 25g butter 25g plain flour 1 teaspoon of mustard powder Milk Cheddar cheese Lasagne sheets Handful of chard or spinach, torn into pieces Mozzarella

32

I started it off with the intention of picking the leaves while still small, like the baby spinach salad leaves you can pick up in the supermarket. And indeed, this worked well. But it went on to grow into a full-sized plant, with spinach sized leaves and colourful stems that looked like psychedelic celery. Struggling to know what to do it with it, I tried cutting up the leaves and adding it to Asian cooking as an alternative to Chinese cabbage or pak choi. The stems went in too, adding colour and texture but no discernible flavour. In fact, none of it tastes of much at all, which you might think would put me off using it. However, its inherent blandness means you can chop it up small and add it to pretty much anything and no one complains. Being able to add a green vegetable to any dish and see it eaten even by the fussiest of family members is a mother’s dream. So, far from being a novelty one off, chard will be back in the garden in 2017 and will be a welcome member of it too. So, as we think about New Year and ‘new you’, maybe we should add trying something new to our New Year’s resolutions list. For me 2017 will be the first year I grow celeriac. Are you brave enough to add a new food to your diet this year?

Method Finely chop the vegetables, put in a frying pan and heat through for a couple of minutes. Add the mince and cook until brown. Add the garlic and fry for 1 more minute before adding the passata. Crumble in the stock cube, add the worcestershire sauce and season to taste. Cook for 5 more minutes then remove from the heat. Next melt the butter in a small saucepan then sprinkle in the flour and mustard powder and combine until a soft doughy ball forms. Cook for a couple of minutes then gradually add the milk, stirring to avoid lumps, until a thick sauce forms. Grate in a little Cheddar, stir until melted then set aside. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas 6 and now assemble the lasagne in a suitable ovenproof dish. Start with a layer of the mince, topped with chard leaves. Add a layer of dried lasagne sheets and top with the cheese sauce. Repeat twice more, finishing with the pasta. Break up the mozzarella and scatter on top. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hot through. Serve with side salad and garlic bread.
