But despite such alarming lifetime risk of developing the statistics, the good news is that condition bowel cancer can be successfully treated in over 90 per cent 2. What to look for: of cases if caught early. Early • a persistent change in bowel diagnosis means that survival habit that causes them to go to from Bowel Cancer is growing. Us British are famous for our toilet humour. However, what I am talking about here is certainly a subject for the inner walls of the toilet but not a laughing matter at all.

the toilet more often and pass looser stools, usually together with blood on or in their stools • a persistent change in bowel habit without blood in their stools, but with abdominal pain • blood in the stools without other haemorrhoid symptoms, such as soreness, discomfort, pain, itching or a lump hanging down outside the back passage • abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating always provoked by eating, sometimes resulting in a reduction in the amount of food eaten and weight loss So, now you know. If you do suffer from any of these symptoms ,and especially if you are in one of those high risk groups of people, get straight down to see your GP and get an early appointment so they can get some tests underway and catch this horrid disease early. NEWS

We’re Making Bletchley Better! Fixing the Links Project What’s happening? The Council will improve the pedestrian/cyclist links between Bletchley Rail Station and the town centre by: • removing a section of the Locke Road retaining wall to ‘open up’ pedestrian access to the town centre

• improving signage and wayfinding

• removing underpass infrastructure which is no longer in use

This is one of a number of projects that the Council is undertaking to regenerate Bletchley.

• reducing the size of Brunel Roundabout • improving the safety of pedestrian/cyclist crossing points • installation of a Redway link along Buckingham Road/V7 • installing new LED lighting [e.g. under Brunel Bridge]

Why? Better links between the train station and the town centre will bring economic benefits, especially when the East West Rail link between Bicester and Bletchley opens.

The Council made improvements to the bus station in 2014. Moreover, Queensway will be opened up to through traffic again in Summer 2016. When and for how long? Work has already begun and will complete in Summer 2016.

Will this mean roadworks? Yes – there will be some traffic management in place whilst work is carried out in this area, however every effort is being made to keep inconvenience to a minimum. Where can I find more information? More details about this project are on the Council’s website www. milton-keynes.gov.uk/ fixingthelinks Alternatively you can contact the Council on 01908 252769 or email FtL@milton-keynes.gov. uk We’re on Facebook and Twitter too @mkcouncil www.facebook.com/mkcouncil1

Importance of Making a Will Quite simply, by having a Will in place you decide who takes care of your children, you decide who inherits your money and possessions and you decide who takes control of your estate upon your death. Without a Will the Laws of Intestacy will apply, this could mean that authorities make decisions regarding Guardianship for your children, your money and possessions will not necessarily go to your loved ones and without a valid Will

A Balanced Approach To Health And Nutrition That there is the key. It's in the title. Balance; nutrition is over complicated by media. Confused by bloggers and social media apps, the information the government provides us with is non current and sometimes wildly inaccurate (amounts of food needed, BMI, and the "food plate"). Don't over complicate something you have been doing your whole life. It's not about ďŹ nding food enemies, or alienating an entire food group due to a current trend. Carbs are not your enemy, fat is not your enemy. They are part of what should be a daily intake. Eat foods you love, the easiest "diet" in the world is one where you actually enjoy the food you are putting in your body. Make meals you enjoy, be smart with the amounts and you can still enjoy the foods that get you excited while hitting your body goals. The same with exercise. Don't do things you don't enjoy, because if you hate something, you will not stick to it, and it will not be sustainable. If you LOVE swimming and you could swim every single day gleefully .... DO IT! If you hate running... Why do it? The bottom line is. Exercise and food do not need to be something that is painful or torturous. They should be fun and exciting. We focus on re training people to see that you can enjoy your new "diet" it should be a lifestyle. It should feel natural, it should be sustainable. If you want to lose fat, drop weight or even bulk up and gain muscle, or just be healthy. We can work that out for you so that you never have to be on a fad diet again. Enjoy yourself - or what's the point? If life isn't making you happy, make the changes so that little choices to better yourself come naturally - not painfully. How men care for themselves

In my practice as a Sexual and Relationship Therapist I often talk with couples about what they do to look after themselves and how they make themselves feel better when poorly. Women as a rule are pretty good at enjoying their morning routine of doing hair, make-up and dressing for the day’s purpose. They seem to be better at knowing what they need to do when life gets stressful. Going to the hairdressers, having a massage or getting their nails done is a moment to relax, away from the duties of the day. Men on the other hand look puzzled when I ask them what they do to care for themselves and in return ask me what I mean by that. After a little exploring, and with a little help from their partner, we do tend to find that men might look after their hair in a certain way, enjoy taking something to read while behind a locked door of the bathroom or seek out a moment’s peace in the garage. The difficulty for men is to look at this as caring for themselves; it is just something they do.

Once we put these actions into the context of caring, something seems to change. Many men begin to report back having noticed how much they enjoy having moments to themselves and investing time in their looks and health. Some even begin a new hobby or start learning a subject, like playing the guitar or speaking another language. Caring for yourself is not only good for you, but is an essential part of being attractive to your partner. If you feel ok about yourself, feel you are doing something you enjoy, you will find that your behaviour changes and your outlook on life lifts. Perhaps you even find that your energy levels improve too, a vital aspect needed to enjoy being with your children. A few moments for you and it seems everyone wins.

The sun has been around a long time but we’re only now seeing the light!

I

n the UK we joke about the weather, mainly because we don’t know what it’s going to do next. But the sun is our friend; we just don’t see her (or him) that much! All the power we get on earth comes from the sun. The sun’s energy was (and still is) used to make fossil fuels, the sun’s heat on the earth’s surface makes air currents that form the winds and the sun itself is the source of all elements even the radioactive ones.

demand increases and stays high until bed time. Generating electricity from solar panels means that the maximum output is during the day, when most people are not at home. So if solar panels are to be of value technologies must be used to switch on heavy drains of electricity during the day when the house is empty. Technologies are available that will tell you when your system is generating sufficient electricity and which appliances you can use:

Using nuclear energy and burning fossil fuels for power has its down sides in terms of pollution so governments have decided to encourage the use of clean, renewable energy sources. Recently in the UK there have been schemes where installing solar panels can achieve grants for the owners. The financial benefits of the scheme have been significantly reduced; not because the government is being mean but because the reasons for installing solar panels should be about manufacturing energy to use yourself not to sell for profit. And from the notion of self-use should spring the need to understand our energy usage. For most households energy usage starts when we wake up as we get ready to go out for the day. Household energy usage during the day then falls to a background level. When the first person gets home in the evening the energy

Look at the statistics at the top of this article. There are many others around drug use, homelessness (87% male), prison populations (95% male) and exclusions from school where males are significantly more likely to have negative effects. This suggests that men may well display emotional distress and unhappiness in ways that do not fit the traditional support model or conventional ‘treatments’. need to look at how we support people and change where necessary so that people get the help they need. There is much that we can ALL do to make things better. Ask if people are okay. And try and make the relationships you have positive ones. The power of a friendly ‘hello’, a smile or a compliment can be enormous. Eat A Rainbow

The other day I was watching a program on the telly about how to live longer and stay healthy in old age. In one part, they visited an island in Japan where people often live beyond their eighties and are active, healthy and valued members of the community. Talking to a man who was 100 years old, he put his long life down to eating a type of purple sweet potato. By this point I had mentally made a note to put purple sweet potato on my shopping list. However, they went on to explain that this was considered an exotic vegetable in the UK and wasn’t readily available but its health giving nutrient, anthocyanin, can be found in other purple and red coloured fruit and vegetables. Indeed, anthocyanin is not the only beneficial nutrient to be found in colourful vegetables. Riboflavinoids, beta-carotene and lycopene are all beneficial nutrients to be found in our colourful fruit and vegetables such as blueberries, grapes, red cabbage, beetroot, carrots and tomatoes and are often the reason they get the label of “superfood”. Where in the past we were encouraged to “eat our greens”, it is now recommended that 2 of the 5-a-day portions

should be purple or red. One of the things I love about growing my own fruit and vegetables is that there is a lot more choice of unusual varieties from seed companies compared to the varieties of fruit and vegetables that the supermarkets sell. For years my youngest daughter has only grown yellow vegetables because that is her favourite colour and we have discovered that yellow French

beans, carrots, courgette and cauliflower are all delicious. My eldest daughter isn’t really much of a fan of her greens so she mainly grows red and purple vegetables. From this we have discovered the delights of red carrots and lettuce and purple podded peas and purple potatoes. Purple mashed potato is a particular delight to serve. Although it can mess a little with your brain to eat a familiar fruit or vegetable that is the wrong colour, it does add interest and variety and I don’t much care what colour it is if it is encouraging them to eat more

vegetables. Fortunately, the shops do seem to be cottoning on the consumer interest in colourful vegetables and you can buy purple sweet potato and even purple potatoes in the shops these days. But even without unusual varieties, it is perfectly possible to eat a rainbow of coloured vegetables by eating things such as red peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, grapes, red cabbage, red onions and beetroot. And don’t forget that the humble carrot is stuffed with beta-carotene. Green vegetables are undeniably good for you, particularly the dark green ones such as broccoli and kale. However, by eating a bright and colourful array of vegetables in a week you will be protecting yourself from cancer, degenerative eye disorders, dementia and even sunburn. And it will look fabulous on your plate too!

Finely chop the red cabbage and place in a bowl. Peel the beetroot then grate into the bowl. Peel the carrot and grate that into the bowl too. Peel the onion and finely chop then add that to the bowl too. Season with salt and pepper and toss the ingredients together with a fork. Dollop in the mayonnaise then stir well until everything is combined. Serve as a side dish or as part of a salad or in sandwiches.

Since September 2015, nearly 3000 school students aged 11-18 and 400 guests from the world of work have taken part. In 2017 we will be working with up to 6 MK schools and reaching approximately 6000 Milton Keynes students and we need your help to do this..... Join us on 13th July 2016 at St Pauls school for their ‘Prep for Work day’ – book your place now at: www.worktree.org/volunteers/events/ “Our staff have enjoyed attending a range of schools,” said Tim Richards, Head of Hewitsons’ MK Office, “but more important, our staff have witnessed the positive impact Worktree is having in influencing children’s career choices.” Tony Nelson, Headteacher, The Hazeley Academy said: “Feedback from our students and staff strongly suggest that Worktree’s Career WorkOut sessions have had a dramatic positive impact on student aspirations, personal vision and drive. In over two decades in education I have not come across a more effective programme for achieving these goals across such a wide range of students for so minimal investment in terms of time and money.” Be part of this pioneering work ensuring MK students have the best employability skills, contact Tom Bulman, tom.bulman@worktree.org, Tel: 07962 838685.
